Image processing has become a critical technology in a variety of science and engineering disciplines. Although most image processing is performed digitally, optical analog processing has the advantages of being low-power and high-speed, but it requires a large volume. Here, we demonstrate flat optics for direct image differentiation, allowing us to significantly shrink the required optical system size. We first demonstrate how the differentiator can be combined with traditional imaging systems such as a commercial optical microscope and camera sensor for edge detection with a numerical aperture up to 0.32. We next demonstrate how the entire processing system can be realized as a monolithic compound flat optic by integrating the differentiator with a metalens. The compound nanophotonic system manifests the advantage of thin form factor as well as the ability to implement complex transfer functions, and could open new opportunities in applications such as biological imaging and computer vision. Vertical integration of a metalens to realize compound nanophotonic systems for optical analog image processing is realized, significantly reducing the size and complexity of conventional optical systems.

In this paper, a unique biologically inspired retina circuit architecture providing Laplacian filter based analog image processing has been suggested. A digital image filtering method is utilized for this aim. Convolution theory and masking technique have an important place among digital image processing methods. These two mathematical operations can be easily done with basic electronic circuit structures. We use current mirrors and current subtractor circuit for the purpose of performing convolution by the use of masking technique on any image. The concept of human retina is able to be mimicked by the help of using silicon circuits. A retina construction can be thought as a group of pixel structures. Because of this reason, we first design a novel pixel circuit as a subcircuit for the retina structure. Our new retina-inspired neuromorphic pixel consists of only 8 MOS transistors. Then, 10 k identical pixel circuits are united together with the help of proper subcircuit connections to achieve a retina structure of size 100 × 100 pixels which enables edge detection feature on images thanks to Laplacian filtering. We compare the analysis results of our grid retina circuit with the theoretical Laplacian filter method used in digital image processing. We obtain analysis results of four different grayscale images that agree well with the expected theoretical results for Laplacian filtering.

The differentiator consists of carefully designed 2D photonic crystal (PhC) slab that can transform an image into its second-order derivative. Based on interference between the direct transmission and low quality factor quasi-guided modes, the PhC slab exhibits angular-dependent transmission for P polarization but remains reflective for S polarization, which avoids polarization mixing in the transmission matrix. Fourier imaging was carried out showing a quadratic transfer function for an NA up to 0.315, which allows one to resolve features on the scale of 1.94λ. To showcase practical applications, the nanophotonic differentiator was directly integrated into an optical microscope and onto a camera sensor demonstrating the ease at which it can be vertically integrated into existing imaging systems. Furthermore, we demonstrate a compound bilayer flat optical by integrating the differentiator with a metalens for realizing a compact and monolithic image processing system. In all cases, the use of the nanophotonic differentiator allows for a significant reduction in size compared to traditional systems as one does not need to pass through the Fourier plane for performing complex image processing. This freedom should open new doors for optical analog image processing in applications involving machine vision.

The field of machine vision is continuously evolving. There are new products coming into the market that have very severe size, weight and power constraints and handle very high computational loads simultaneously. Existing architectures and digital image processing solutions will not be able to meet these ever-increasing demands. There is a need to develop novel architectures and image processing solutions to address these requirements. The major contribution of this work is to show that analog signal processing is a solution to this problem. The analog processor will be used as an augmentation device which works in parallel with the digital processor, making the system faster and more efficient. We have developed a prototype of an analog processing board using commercially available off-the-shelf components and demonstrated that a prototype development has several advantages over a direct integrated circuit design. We focus on providing experimental results that demonstrate functionality of the analog processing board and show that the performance of the prototype board for low-level and mid-level image processing tasks is equivalent to a digital implementation. To demonstrate improvement in speed and power consumption over other systems, we propose an integrated circuit design of the analog processor and show that such an analog processor would be 100× faster than existing FPGAs and 5× faster than state-of-the-art GPUs. We also compare the performance of the proposed integrated circuit design against other analog processors reported in the literature. We report a case study in which we use the processor for an object detection and recognition application and show that the processor has excellent performance.

The transformation of digital camera raw sensor image data into a full-color fully processed image involves a complex chain of computations. The possible orderings of individual operations and associated implementation details that constitute the image processing chain can lead to a sea of permutations. However, despite this seemingly immense number of available degrees of freedom, the problem of image processing chain design is overconstrained. Image quality must be maximized while compute resource use must be minimized. It is the minimization of required computational effort that, in fact, severely restricts the number of degrees of freedom in the image processing chain design problem. Consequently, image processing operations that are highly effective may not be viable candidates for image processing chain for constrained compute environments. In the end, the process of designing an image processing chain becomes one of taking relatively simple, well-known image processing operations and staging them in a manner that produces the best synergistic effects.

Continuous mobile vision is limited by the inability to efficiently capture image frames and process vision features. This is largely due to the energy burden of analog readout circuitry, data traffic, and intensive computation. To promote efficiency, we shift early vision processing into the analog domain. This results in RedEye, an analog convolutional image sensor that performs layers of a convolutional neural network in the analog domain before quantization. We design RedEye to mitigate analog design complexity, using a modular column-parallel design to promote physical design reuse and algorithmic cyclic reuse. RedEye uses programmable mechanisms to admit noise for tunable energy reduction. Compared to conventional systems, RedEye reports an 85% reduction in sensor energy, 73% reduction in cloudlet-based system energy, and a 45% reduction in computation-based system energy.

Ultra low power signal processing is an essential part of all sensor nodes, and particularly so in emerging wearable sensors for biomedical applications. Analog signal processing has an important role in these low power, low voltage, low frequency applications, and there is a key drive to decrease the power consumption of existing analog domain signal processing and to map more signal processing approaches into the analog domain. This paper presents an analog domain signal processing circuit which approximates the output of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) for use in ultra low power wearable sensors. Analog filters are used for the DWT filters and it is demonstrated how these generate analog domain DWT-like information that embeds information from Butterworth and Daubechies maximally flat mother wavelet responses. The Analog DWT is realised in hardware via g m C circuits, designed to operate from a 1.3 V coin cell battery, and provide DWT-like signal processing using under 115 nW of power when implemented in a 0.18 μm CMOS process. Practical examples demonstrate the effective use of the new Analog DWT on ECG (electrocardiogram) and EEG (electroencephalogram) signals recorded from humans.

Kymographs are widely used to represent and anal- yse spatio-temporal dynamics of fluorescence markers along curvilinear biological compartments. These objects have a sin- gular geometry, thus kymograph reconstruction is inherently an analog image processing task. However, the existing approaches are essentially digital: the kymograph photometry is sampled directly from the time-lapse images. As a result, such kymographs rely on raw image data that suffer from the degradations entailed by the image formation process and the spatio-temporal resolution of the imaging setup. In this work, we address these limitations and introduce a well-grounded Bayesian framework for the analog reconstruction of kymographs. To handle the movement of the object, we introduce an intrinsic description of kymographs using differential geometry: a kymograph is a photometry defined on a parameter space that is embedded in physical space by a time-varying map that follows the object geometry. We model the kymograph photometry as a L\'evy innovation process, a flexible class of non-parametric signal priors. We account for the image formation process using the virtual microscope framework. We formulate a computationally tractable representation of the associated maximum a posteriori problem and solve it using a class of efficient and modular algorithms based on the alternating split Bregman. We assess the performance of our Bayesian framework on synthetic data and apply it to reconstruct the fluorescence dynamics along microtubules in vivo in the budding yeast S. cerevisiae. Advances in the field of synthetic biology have been key to demonstration of molecular computing systems in general and DNA in particular. This paper presents an overview of how continuous-time, discrete-time, and digital signal processing systems can be implemented using molecular reactions and DNA. In this paper, discrete-time systems refer to sampled signals with continuous signal amplitude. Signals that are sampled in discrete time steps with digital amplitude are referred to as digital signals. Delay elements in sampled signals are implemented using molecular reactions in the form of molecular transfer reactions. Completion of all phases of transfer reactions once corresponds to a computation cycle. These molecular systems can be implemented in a fully-synchronous, globally-synchronous locally-asynchronous or fully-asynchronous manner. The paper also presents molecular sensing systems where molecular reactions are used to implement analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs). Molecular implementations of digital logic systems are presented. A complete example of the addition of two molecules using digital implementation is described where the concentrations of two molecules are converted to digital by two 3-bit ADCs, and the 4-bit output of the digital adder is converted to analog by a 4-bit DAC. This system is demonstrated using both molecular reactions and DNA. A brief comparison of molecular and electronic systems is also presented.

This paper provides quite a new approach for analog computing. This work proposes an analog characterization module to imitate (emulate) various analog components as essential technologies for analog reconfigurable system. This module converts an analog input signal into digital by an ADC, makes use of digital signal processing technologies to characterize the signal as expected, and outputs the analog signal converting by a DAC. Unlike a typical digital-assist, the module is used as a pseudo analog component. In this paper, we verify the feasibility of our idea with respect to DC operating characteristics as a resistance. In addition, we incorporate our analog characterization module into the feedback of opamp and clarify the cancellation the discretization noise.

In this paper, the design and architecture of general digital image processing circuit (GFDIPC) based on a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA processor is presented. The GFDIPC applications on thermal imaging, image fusion, real-time video stabilization and time-delay test for image processing system are described. We describe architectures for audio classification front ends on a reconfigurable analog platform. Real-time implementation of audio processing algorithms involving discrete-time signals tend to be power-intensive. We present an alternate continuous-time system implementation of a noise-suppression algorithm on our reconfigurable chip, while detailing the design considerations. We also describe a framework that enables future implementations of other speech processing algorithms, classifier front ends, and hearing aids.

Data and especially image compression is becoming increasingly important for efficient resource utilization. Many digital image file formats therefore include universally usable compression methods. They treat every image separately and do not profit from a larger image data set's similar image contents, which are present in numerous biomedical applications. In order to keep the system cost effective with an ease of reimplementation. The low cost and easily market available discrete analog components are employed. The digital part is kept configurable with the help of a FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) based implementation. The digital circuit implementation is done via Verilog, a HDL (Hardware Description Language). The system implementation is described. Testing results are also presented. These results assure a proper functionality of the designed ADC.

Real-time image acquisition and processing system is widely used. In order to realize the fast development of the relative project, an image acquisition and processing platform is presented. In the design, the DSP of TMS320C6416 is used as high-speed signal processor core, and the FPGA of XC3S700 is taken to offer embedded memory, and connecting DSP and CMOS image sensor. To reduce the burden of CPU, the EDMA technology is used to finish the image data transmission. The main function modules of the platform include acquisition, processing, USB communication, and VGA displaying. The platform can acquire image, display image and make some image processing operations such as geometry transform, orthographic transform, features extracting, target recognition and target tracking. Experiment results show that design of the image acquisition and processing system is reasonable, feasible and has some application value.

The Logarithmic Type Image Processing (LTIP) tools are mathematical models that were constructed for the representation and processing of gray tones images. By careful redefinition of the fundamental operations, namely addition and scalar multiplication, a set of mathematical properties are achieved. Here we propose the extension of LTIP models by a novel parameterization rule that ensures preservation of the required cone space structure. To prove the usability of the proposed extension we present an application for low-light image enhancement in images acquired with digital still camera. The closing property of the named model facilitates similarity with human visual system and digital camera processing pipeline, thus leading to superior behavior when compared with state of the art methods.

Real-time processing emerged as an important component in the digital image processing area. The fast and convenient processing opens news possibilities, for example, configurable image processing modules in order to massive processing of images. With this purpose, this paper describes a colored digital image processing system. This system can configure a set of filters according to the prescriptions of a user, in order to adapt the system to the images to be treated. Six filters that perform the tasks of smoothing, edge detection, histogram equalization, color normalization and brightness normalization compose such a set. The system was described using System Verilog hardware description language, and implemented in an Altera FPGA. Due to its configurable characteristic, this system is capable of processing colored images for several applications such as agricultural and medical.

This paper mainly introduces a FPGA-based data acquisition system which is designed to acquire multi-channel analog signal and one channel digital signal. Analog data and digital data are stored into a FLASH memory in a mixed frame format. When the acquisition finished, the data in the FLASH was read out via the LVDS communication interface to a data-read device, and the host computer receives the data through the USB bus, so the subsequent data processing and analysis can be accomplished and the information we needed can be got. The design is applied successfully to a remote measurement system, and the data acquired is reliable and precise.

This work presents an intelligent analog image sensor system for smart camera applications with the need of edge or marker detection. The system consists of a 3×3 read-out CMOS image sensor, an analog Sobel stage and additional circuitry like operational amplifiers and comparators to compute a 1 bit image with the edges present in the taken photo. This information can then be further processed digitally to detect specific shapes in order to control robot routines, for example. The architecture of the proposed system is highly desirable as dedicated analog hardware has significant advantages in terms of power and speed compared to digital implementations. The overall system is simulated with the help of a 3×3 CMOS image sensor IC as well as Cadence Virtuoso for analog circuit simulation and MATLAB to convert the sequential information back to an image, and compared to other state of the art CMOS image sensors with edge detection capability. The analog Sobel circuit runs with a clock of 10 MHz and consumes less than 0.79 mW average power for the computation of the example image, and the whole 200×200 pixel image sensor consumes only 5.5 mW at a frame rate of 75 fps.

The paper investigates the use of the existing CAD framework for digital circuit synthesis to design and synthesize a select set of mixed-signal functions like analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversions. This approach leads to fast and low cost design of technology portable system-on-chip solutions with analog interfaces. Some circuit examples for implementation of data conversion using digital circuits are discussed, leveraging on time-domain signal processing. Some of the signal corruptionmechanisms in time-domain signal processing systems are considered in order to suggest adaptations to the existing digital design flow for the synthesis of mixed-signal circuits. As an example to show that high performance data conversion circuits can be realized using low accuracy general purpose components, an ADC is designed and synthesized with the vendor supplied standard cell library in a 65 nm CMOS process. Spectre simulation results show the feasibility of employing a digital CAD framework tosynthesize high performance mixed-signal circuits, by applying time-domain signal processing.

In order to carry out high speed and effective digital image processing, the use of FPGA is a relatively reasonable choice due to the large amount of data in digital image. Thus we need a careful simulation test to verify the correctness of the VHDL code to achieve the corresponding algorithm. It is difficult to achieve the digital image processing algorithm simulation if we rely on the traditional input waveform method. And if we write a test file (Testbench) to generate a number of test vectors, it would be very low efficiency for the simulation test. If we put the real digital image data into a file as test input, not only can the correctness of the algorithm is verified, but also the processed data can be written into the image file. Thus the result can be viewed through image in this directly way which gives us great convenience for designing and debugging. We prove that a digital image that has the same digital homotopy type with any digital H-space is also a digital H-space. We show that the digital fundamental group of a digital H-space is abelian. We give examples that are related to a digital homotopy associative H-space and a kappa-contractible digital H-space. Several important applications of digital H-spaces are given in computer vision and image processing. Finally, we deal with the importance of digital H-space in digital topology and image processing. Image sensors with integrated, programmable signal processing execute computationally intensive processing steps during or immediately after image acquisition, thereby allowing for reducing output data to relevant features only. In contrast to conventional image processing systems, the tasks of image acquisition and actual image processing in such a ""vision chip"" cannot be viewed independently of each other. Both for validating the architecture and supporting programming in the course of application development, modeling on the system level has been performed as part of the design process of the vision-system-on-chip. Apart from the implementation of all essential components of the integrated control unit as well as digital and analog signal processing, special attention has been paid to the integration into the development environment. In the last half century the most used video storage devices have been the magnetic tapes, where the information are stored in analog format based on the electromagnetism principles. When the digital technique has become the most used, it was necessary to convert analog information in digital format in order to preserve these data. Unfortunately, analog videos may be affected by drops that produce some visual defect which could be acquired during the digitization process. Despite there are many hardware to perform the digitization, just few implement the automatic correction of these defects. In some cases, drop removal is possible through the analog device. However, when a damaged already-converted video is owned, a correction based on image processing technique is the unique way to enhance the videos. In this paper, the drop, also known as "Tracking Error" or "Mistracking," is analyzed. We propose an algorithm to detect the drops' visual artifacts in the converted videos, as well as a digital restoration method.

Developing digital controllers requires the designer to assess both the analog circuitry around the controller and the digital logic within the controller. When implementing a digital controller, there are no limitations on how to interface the analog environment with the digital logic. Several main concerns must be addressed for proper integration. First, supplying DC power rails to the controller and providing local digital and analog grounds to limit noise and ground loops. Second, signal conditioning and data acquisition via analog-to-digital converters. This includes adequate filtering, buffering, and scaling of analog signals so that they can be accurately quantized without aliasing and error. Third, representation of data in the digital domain via fixed-point representation. Fourth, implementation of digital feedback loops and filters. Digital filters are sensitive to quantization error, sampling rate, and timing constraints; they can become unstable if any is improperly set. This can lead to unwanted effects within the control loop. And finally, implementation of gate drivers to translate the digital logic to the power supply control. When all of these concerns are addressed, then the digital controller can be implemented and will rival the performance of “analog” IC, which are normally used for power supply control applications.

Project Based Learning Methodology is implemented by using MATLAB Software and applied to this course. This Paper Presents the Procedure to implement a Project Based Learning Methodology to develop various applications in the area of Digital Image Processing. By Using Project Based Learning we can motivate the students more effectively.
