An experimental study and hydrocode simulation was conducted to investigate the correlation between hardness of steel and the ballistic performance of steel-encapsulated SiC armour modules against long rod impact. The armour module design composed of a SiC tile in confinement within 10 mm backing and 5 mm cover plates, which were made of AISI 4340 steel with varying hardnesses between HRC 30 to 50. The armour modules were subjected to normal impact by conical tungsten alloy long rods of 8.3 mm diameter and 115 mm length, at a nominal striking velocity of 1.25 km/s. A witness block of AISI 4340 steel was placed behind the armour module to capture the residual projectile. Failure analysis of the armour modules and the measurement of residual penetration in the witness blocks were applied to characterize ballistic performance of the ceramic armour modules. The different modes of failure of the backing plate and its influence on ballistic performance of the module were verified through visual inspection of test modules and analysis of high speed videos. Hydrocode simulation of the experiments using LS-DYNA was carried out to model the penetration and failure processes that occurred in the armour modules. The Johnson Cook model was applied in simulation of the steel confinement, accounting for the influence of hardness on JC model parameters. Results showed that increasing hardness of the backing enhanced the performance of the module while cover plate hardness had no influence within the range of hardnesses tested. This study paves the way for future studies to further understand the influence of steel hardness on the ballistics performance of steel-encapsulated silicon carbide (SiC) armour modules.

Amongst hundreds of different projectiles for air guns available on the market, hollow-point air gun pellets are of special interest. These pellets are characterized by a tip or a hollowed-out shape in their tip which, when fired, makes the projectiles expand to an increased diameter upon entering the target medium. This results in an increase in release of energy which, in turn, has the potential to cause more serious injuries than non-hollow-point projectiles. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, reliable data on the terminal ballistic features of hollow-point air gun projectiles compared to standard diabolo pellets have not yet been published in the forensic literature. The terminal ballistic performance (energy-dependent expansion and penetration) of four different types of .177 caliber hollow-point pellets discharged at kinetic energy levels from approximately 3 J up to 30 J into water, ordnance gelatin, and ordnance gelatin covered with natural chamois as a skin simulant was the subject of this investigation. Energy-dependent expansion of the tested hollow-point pellets was observed after being shot into all investigated target media. While some hollow-point pellets require a minimum kinetic energy of approximately 10 J for sufficient expansion, there are also hollow-point pellets which expand at kinetic energy levels of less than 5 J. The ratio of expansion (RE, calculated by the cross-sectional area (A) after impact divided by the cross-sectional area (A 0) of the undeformed pellet) of hollow-point air gun pellets reached values up of to 2.2. The extent of expansion relates to the kinetic energy of the projectile with a peak for pellet expansion at the 15 to 20 J range. To conclude, this work demonstrates that the hollow-point principle, i.e., the design-related enlargement of the projectiles’ frontal area upon impact into a medium, does work in air guns as claimed by the manufacturers.

One of the primary design considerations of earth-orbiting spacecraft is the mitigation of the damage that might occur from an on-orbit MMOD impact. Traditional damage-resistant design consists of a ‘bumper’ that is placed a small distance away from a spacecraft component or from the wall of the element in which it is housed. The performance of such a multi-wall structural element is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation (BLE), which defines the threshold particle size that results in a failure of the spacecraft element. BLEs are also key components of any micro-meteoroid/orbital debris (MMOD) risk assessment calculations. However, these assessments often call for BLEs to predict impact response for projectiles made of materials not used in the development of those BLEs. The question naturally arises regarding how close are the predictions of such BLEs when used in impact scenarios involving projectiles made of materials not necessarily considered in their development. In an effort to address this issue, a study was performed with the objective of assessing the validity of the NNO BLE for non-aluminum particles. Particle materials considered included steel, copper, and Al 2 O 3 (i.e. particles that are made of materials that are more dense than aluminum). Comparisons are made between actual test results involving these non-aluminum projectiles and the predictions of the NNO BLE. In nearly all cases, the NNO BLE was found not to work very well in the predicting failure / no failure response of these non-aluminum projectiles. A new NNO-type BLE is then developed that can be used to more reliably predict the response of dual-wall systems under the hypervelocity impact of such “heavier” non-aluminum projectiles.

Effective structural design to resist ballistic effects such as small arms or fragmenting weapons has been a goal since weapons were developed. Approaches currently in use for ballistic design are predominantly deterministic and allow designers to decide what wall thickness should be used to stop a prescribed projectile impacting at a predefined velocity. The research presented in this paper provides a framework for conducting reliability analysis of structures subjected to bullet and fragment demands. Thus, pseudo-fragility curves are developed for the limit states related to spall and perforation of wall panels, residual velocities of bullets and fragments, and injury to personnel. The pseudo-fragility analysis provides engineers and owners with a tool to quickly assess the reliability of a wall system subjected to high velocity, low mass projectiles. The static response of ballistic panels and also its resistance to blast and ballistic impact is investigated in the framework of this study. By connecting individual ballistic panels together, the protective barrier can be constructed. The protective barrier can be featured as a system with high mobility and versatility that is achieved by linking basic interlocking plate elements together. The resulting protective barrier can be shaped according to many possible scenarios in a wall with various possible opening angles and a small post with the tetragonal base or a larger post with the hexagonal ground plan. The material solution of the protective barrier benefits from the application of ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (UHPFRCC), which meets the requirements for enhanced resistance against extreme loads such as blast or impact. Besides, by using UHPFRCC, thin and slender design can be adopted, which is advantageous in many ways. Slender design results in a lower weight, allowing for easy manipulation and replacement. To verify the behavior of the panels, the proposed barrier was subjected to various loadings at different strain rates. The experimental campaign demonstrated that the protective barrier has a reasonable load-bearing capacity and also sufficient resistance against projectile impact and blast effects.

The paper deals with a possibility of the local repairing of damaged composite armours. The proposed repairs can be performed directly in the field, allowing thus to recover the full ballistic protection in a short time. Several solutions (temporary or permanent) were designed and tested both experimentally and using numerical simulations. Overlapping of the damaged area with patch from armour steel after filling the hole with ceramic balls showed to be optimal as a temporary repair. The calculation clearly showed that the depth of penetration of the projectile is reduced in all cases of designed permanent repairs in comparison to original armour configuration. The experiments confirmed supposed enhancing of ballistic resistance, but only some repair techniques met the requirements of multi-hit testing. However, the reason of failure after multi-hit could be clearly explained with the help of used numerical simulations.

The fundamental components of any meteoroid/orbital debris (MOD) risk assessment calculation are environment models, damage response predictor equations, and failure criteria. In the case of a spacecraft operating in low earth orbit, the response predictor equation typically takes the form of a ballistic limit equation (BLE) that defines the threshold particle sizes that cause failure of a spacecraft wall or component. Spacecraft risk assessments often call for BLEs for spacecraft components that do not exist. In such cases, it is a common procedure to use an existing BLE after first equivalencing the actual materials and/or wall thicknesses to the materials that were used in the development of the existing BLE. The question naturally arises regarding how close are the predictions of such an ‘adapted BLE’ to the response characteristics of the actual materials/wall configurations under high speed projectile impacts. This paper presents the results of a study that compared the predictions of a commonly used BLE when adapted to the Soyuz OM wall configuration against those of a new BLE that was developed specifically for that Soyuz wall configuration. It was found that the critical projectile diameters predicted by the new Soyuz OM wall BLE can exceed those predicted by the adapted use of the existing BLE by as much as 50% of the existing BLE values. Thus, using the adapted version of the existing BLE in this particular case would contribute to a more conservative value of assessed risk. If the same trends were to hold true for other spacecraft wall configurations, then it is also possible that using existing BLEs, even after they have been adjusted for differences in materials, etc., may result in predictions of smaller critical diameters (i.e., increased assessed risk) than would using BLEs purposely developed for actual spacecraft configurations of interest.

The mechanisms of progressive penetration for two ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced laminates have been investigated. One used an UHMWPE fiber reinforcement while the other utilized molecularly aligned tape. Both materials had similar out of plane compressive strengths, but the fiber system had a 40% higher in plane tensile strength than the tape. Laminated, 6 mm thick plates with a [0°/90°] ply architecture were impacted by a 12.7 mm diameter sphere under conditions that either allowed out of plane plate deflection or eliminated this deflection by rear support of the target. The depth of penetration and the ballistic limit in the rear-supported tests were identical for the two materials, and proceeded by progressive ply failure. However, tests in the edge clamped condition resulted in a substantially higher penetration resistance, especially for the higher tensile strength fiber-reinforced material. Edge clamped testing of a bilayer target, where the front third was composed of the tape material and the remainder comprised fiber reinforced laminate, had the same ballistic limit as a target composed of only the higher ply tensile strength fiber reinforced material. Penetration in both test support conditions was discovered to occur by tensile ply rupture under the projectile, consistent with a recently proposed mechanism for converting out of plane compression to in plane ply tension. Lateral displacement of plies was also observed near the sides of impact craters in both materials, indicating the existence of a second mechanism impeding penetration of the spherical shaped projectile.

Purpose: Ferromagnetic bullets can move in air or gelatin in magnetic resonance (MR) units. According to our experience, ferromagnetic bullets do not always present consistent movement. We examined factors affecting ferromagnetic projectile movement in a 1.5T and a 3T MR unit, focusing in this study on the steel-jacketed Swiss ordnance ammunition 7.5mm GP11 Suisse. Methods: Five 7.5mm GP11 Suisse bullets were embedded horizontally and vertically in 10% ordnance gelatin phantoms. Before and after exposing the bullets to 1.5T (Siemens) and 3T (Philips) MR units each bullet's position was documented by a CT scan. In a second phase, the magnetic polarization of the bullets in relation to the MR units was measured by a dry magnetic portable compass (Suunto). Results: Our results showed that the displacement of the bullets increased when subjected to a stronger magnetic field (max. Movement 1.5T: 24.4mm vs. 3T: 101.5mm) and that the position, i.e. orientation of the bullet toward the gantry, strongly influenced its mobility (horizontally embedded projectiles showed poor movement, vertically placed ones strong movement). One of the bullets presented a 180° rotation in the 3T MR unit. Magnetization and changing of the polarization of these ferromagnetic bullets is possible when subjected to MR units. Conclusion: In conclusion, the location of a bullet, and its orientation toward the gantry must be taken into account when assessing the risk of performing an MR examination on a gunshot victim in clinical and in forensic cases.

The effect of matrix shear strength on the ballistic response of simply-supported carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) beams was explored for a flat-ended projectile. To gain insight into the deformation and failure mechanisms, the following additional tests were performed on CFRP beams: (i) quasi-static indentation tests with rigid back support and, (ii) quasi-static cropping tests. In all 3 types of tests, CFRP [0°/90°] cross-ply laminates were tested in six states of cure, such that the matrix shear strength ranges from 0.1 MPa to 100 MPa. In the quasi-static cropping tests, the composite beams failed by shear plugging (involving transverse matrix cracks, ply delamination, and fibre fracture). In contrast, indirect tension (by ply tensile failure in the fibre direction) occurred in the back-supported quasi-static indentation tests. In the ballistic tests, the CFRP beams of high matrix shear strength (30 MPa–100 MPa) failed by a shear plugging mode. When the matrix shear strength was less than 30 MPa, the failure mode and the penetration velocity doubled and occurred by indirect tension. The optimal shear strength to give adequate static and ballistic strength is on the order of 20 MPa.

Determination of ballistic performance of an armor solution is a complicated task and evolved significantly with the application of finite element methods (FEM) in this research field. The traditional armor design studies performed with FEM requires sophisticated procedures and intensive computational effort, therefore simpler and accurate numerical approaches are always worthwhile to decrease armor development time. This study aims to apply a hybrid method using FEM simulation and artificial neural network (ANN) analysis to approximate ballistic limit thickness for armor steels. To achieve this objective, a predictive model based on the artificial neural networks is developed to determine ballistic resistance of high hardness armor steels against 7.62 mm armor piercing ammunition. In this methodology, the FEM simulations are used to create training cases for Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) three layer networks. In order to validate FE simulation methodology, ballistic shot tests on 20 mm thickness target were performed according to standard Stanag 4569. Afterwards, the successfully trained ANN(s) is used to predict the ballistic limit thickness of 500 HB high hardness steel armor. Results show that even with limited number of data, FEM-ANN approach can be used to predict ballistic penetration depth with adequate accuracy. Copyright (C) 2015, China Ordnance Society. Kinetic energy non-lethal projectiles are used to impart sufficient effect onto a person in order to deter uncivil or hazardous behavior with a low probability of permanent injury. Since their first use, real cases indicate that the injuries inflicted by such projectiles may be irreversible and sometimes lead to death, especially for the head impacts. Given the high velocities and the low masses involved in such impacts, the assessment approaches proposed in automotive crash tests and sports may not be appropriate. Therefore, there is a need of a specific approach to assess the lethality of these projectiles. In this framework, some recent research data referred in this article as “force wall approach” suggest the use of three lesional thresholds (unconsciousness, meningeal damages and bone damages) that depend on the intracranial pressure. Three corresponding critical impact forces are determined for a reference projectile. Based on the principle that equal rigid wall maximal impact forces will produce equal damage on the head, these limits can be determined for any other projectile. In order to validate the consistence of this innovative method, it is necessary to compare the results with other existing assessment methods. This paper proposes a comparison between the “force wall approach” and two different head models. The first one is a numerical model (Strasbourg University Finite Element Head Model-SUFEHM) from Strasbourg University; the second one is a mechanical surrogate (Ballistics Load Sensing Headform-BLSH) from Biokinetics.

Yarn shooting experiments were conducted to determine the ballistically-relevant, Young’s modulus and tensile strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber. Target specimens were Dyneema® SK76 yarns (1760 dtex), twisted to 40 turns/m, and initially tensioned to stresses ranging from 29 to 2200 MPa. Yarns were impacted, transversely, by two types of cylindrical steel projectiles at velocities ranging from 150 to 555 m/s: (i) a reverse-fired, fragment simulating projectile (FSP) where the flat rear face impacted the yarn rather than the beveled nose; and (ii) a ‘saddle-nosed projectile’ having a specially contoured nose imparting circular curvature in the region of impact, but opposite curvature transversely to prevent yarn slippage off the nose. Experimental data consisted of sequential photographic images of the progress of the triangular transverse wave, as well as tensile wave speed measured using spaced, piezo-electric sensors. Yarn Young’s modulus, calculated from the tensile wave-speed, varied from 133 GPa at minimal initial tension to 208 GPa at the highest initial tensions. However, varying projectile impact velocity, and thus, the strain jump on impact, had negligible effect on the modulus. Contrary to predictions from the classical Cole-Smith model for 1D yarn impact, the critical velocity for yarn failure differed significantly for the two projectile types, being 18% lower for the flat-faced, reversed FSP projectile compared to the saddle-nosed projectile, which converts to an apparent 25% difference in yarn strength. To explain this difference, a wave-propagation model was developed that incorporates tension wave collision under blunt impact by a flat-faced projectile, in contrast to outward wave propagation in the classical model. Agreement between experiment and model predictions was outstanding across a wide range of initial yarn tensions. However, plots of calculated failure stress versus yarn pre-tension stress resulted in apparent yarn strengths much lower than 3.4 GPa from quasi-static tension tests, although a plot of critical velocity versus initial tension did project to 3.4 GPa at zero velocity. This strength reduction (occurring also in aramid fibers) suggested that transverse fiber distortion and yarn compaction from a compressive shock wave under the projectile results in fiber-on-fiber interference in the emerging transverse wave front, causing a gradient in fiber tensile strains with depth, and strain concentration in fibers nearest the projectile face. A model was developed to illustrate the phenomenon.

As illustrated in literature, ballistics is a branch of theoretical mechanics, which studies the construction and working principles of firearms and ammunition, their effects, as well as the motions of projectiles and bullets 1 . Criminalistics identification, as part of judiciary identification represents an activity aimed at finding common traits of different objects, objectives, phenomena and beings, but more importantly, traits that differentiate each of them from similar ones 2-4 . In judicial ballistics, in the case of rifled firearms it is relatively simple for experts to identify the used weapon from traces left on the projectile, as the rifling of the barrel leaves imprints on the bullet, which remain approximately identical even after the respective weapon is fired 100 times with the same barrel. However, in the case of smoothbore firearms, their identification becomes much more complicated. As the firing cap suffers alterations from being hit by the firing pin, determination of the force generated during impact creates the premises for determining the type of firearm used to shoot the respective cartridge. The present paper proposes a simple impact model that can be used to evaluate the force generated by the firing pin during its impact with the firing cap. The present research clearly showed that each rifle, by the combination of the three investigated parameters (impact force maximum value, its variation diagram, and impact time) leave a unique trace. Application of such a method in ballistics can create the perspectives for formulating clear conclusions that eliminate possible judicial errors in this field.

This paper presents an initial design assessment of a series of novel, cost-effective, and hybrid composite materials for applications involving high velocity impacts. The proposed hybrid panels were designed in order to investigate various physical phenomenon occurring during high velocity impact on compliant laminates from a previous study on Dyneema® and Spectra®. In the first, screening phase of the study twenty different hybrid composite laminates were impacted with 20 mm Fragment Simulating Projectiles at 1 km/s striking velocity. The best performing concepts were put forward to phase II with other hybrid concepts involving shear thickening fluids, commonly used in low velocity impacts. The results indicated that it is possible to design hybrid laminates of similar ballistic performance as the reference Dyneema® laminate, but with lower material costs. The optimal hybrid concept involves a fibre reinforced Polypropylene front and a Dyneema® backing.

In firearm examiners’ and forensic specialists’ casework as well as in air gun proof testing, reliable measurement of the weapon’s muzzle velocity is indispensable. While there are standardized and generally accepted procedures for testing the performance of air guns, the method of seating the diabolo pellets deeper into the breech of break barrel spring-piston air guns has not found its way into standardized test procedures. The influence of pellet seating on the external ballistic parameters was investigated using ten different break barrel spring-piston air guns. Test shots were performed with the diabolo pellets seated 2 mm deeper into the breech using a pellet seater. The results were then compared to reference shots with conventionally loaded diabolo pellets. Projectile velocity was measured with a high-precision redundant ballistic speed measurement system. In eight out of ten weapons, the muzzle energy increased significantly when the pellet seater was used. The average increase in kinetic energy was 31 % (range 9–96 %). To conclude, seating the pellet even slightly deeper into the breech of spring-piston air guns might significantly alter the muzzle energy. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that this effect is taken into account when accurate and reliable measurements of air gun muzzle velocity are necessary.

The use of cartridge projectiles in the ballistic evaluation of armor can result in measurement uncertainty if there is variability in their construction. This report details a method that was developed to batch analyze and compare the volumes of (210) BS41 surrogate projectiles that were scanned using X-ray computed tomography. The method described automatically segments and obtains the axial-symmetric radii profiles of components contained within the projectile (outer jacket, inner jacket, core), which can then be used to quantify and compare projectiles to one another numerically using a root-mean-square-error calculation. Projectiles are then grouped together according to the similarity of their components. Also discussed is graphical-cluster analysis of the projectiles, which aids in understanding the source of their variability as well as an approach to use this methods numerical component values to account for projectile variability in the ballistic evaluation of armor.

This report relates to the discovery and development by the authors of armor designs using certain elastomers applied as coatings to the front side of rigid substrates, to increase the ballistic and blast performance of armor. This has led to much activity intended to optimize and exploit the technology for various applications, both military and civilian. Since armor improvements of even a few percent are substantial, quantifying the performance of armor materials requires high accuracy. Herein we describe test methods and analyses useful in achieving measurements of sufficient quality. Since the optimal design of any armor, conventional or advanced, depends on the threat (i.e., the nature of the projectile and its mass and energy; single- versus multiple-hit defeat), we describe how performance attributes can be quantified and valid comparisons made between different armor designs.

Whipple shields were first proposed as a means of protecting spacecraft from the impact of micrometeoroids in 1947 [1] and are currently in use as micrometeoroid and orbital debris shields on modern spacecraft. In the intervening years, the function of the thin bumper used to shatter or melt threatening particles has been augmented and enhanced by the use of various types and configurations of intermediate layers of various materials. All shield designs serve to minimize the threat of a spall failure or perforation of the main wall of the spacecraft as a result of the impact of the fragments. With increasing use of Whipple shields, various ballistic limit equations (BLEs) for guiding the design and estimating the performance of shield systems have been developed. Perhaps the best known and most used are the "new" modified Cour-Palais (Christiansen) equations [2]. These equations address the three phases of impact: (1) ballistic ( 7 km/s), where the projectile melts or vaporizes at impact. The performance of Whipple shields and the adequacy of the BLEs have been examined for the first two phases using the results of impact tests obtained from two-stage, light-gas gun test firings. Shield performance and the adequacy of the BLEs has not been evaluated in the melt/vaporization phase until now because of the limitations of launchers used to accelerate projectiles with controlled properties to velocities above 7.5 km/s. A three-stage, light-gas gun, developed at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) [3], is capable of launching small, aluminum spheres to velocities above 9 km/s. This launcher was used to evaluate the ballistic performance of two Whipple shield systems, various thermal protection system materials, and other spacecraft-related materials to the impact of 1.6-mm- to 2.6-mm-diameter, 2017-T4 aluminum spheres at impact velocities ranging from 8.91 km/s to 9.28 km/s. Test results, details of the shield systems, and nominal ballistic limits for the two Whipple shields are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The impact of three different projectiles (0.357 Magnum, 9-mm FMJ and 0.30 cal FSP) onto Kevlar® was modeled using a commercial finite-element program. The focus of the research was on simulating full-scale body armor targets, which were modeled at the yarn level, by reducing to a minimum the number of solid elements per yarn. A thorough validation of the impact physics was performed at the yarn level, single-layer level, and a full body armor system. A verification was performed by checking the numerical model against analytical predictions for yarn impact. For one-layer and multiple-layer targets validation consisted on matching experimental data of pyramid formation recorded by an ultra-high-speed camera. The full-scale targets were also instrumented with nickel–chromium wires that stretch with the yarn during the penetration event. The wires provided a second validation data set since the numerical model can reproduce the signal recorded by the wires. The third and final validation of the model is provided by a comparison of the ballistic limit predicted by the model and data obtained in tests. This is a check of the failure model used in the numerical simulations. This paper shows that the main features of the impact physics are well reproduced by the finite-element model. Prediction of ballistic limits for the 9-mm FMJ and FSP projectiles were within the scatter of the tests, while for the 0.357 projectile the difference was only 15%.

The design of a canard-controlled mortar projectile using a bank-to-turn concept is presented. A unique feature of this smart mortar configuration is that it is equipped with a set of two reciprocating fixed-angle maneuver canards and a set of two reciprocating fixed-angle roll canards. An active control system is designed such that the roll canards set the body in the proper maneuver plane and the maneuver canards extend to perform trajectory corrections. Example results and Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate control system effectiveness in reducing dispersion error due to launch perturbations and winds. Comparison studies with a rolling airframe equipped with reciprocating maneuver canards show that the bank-to-turn approach offers more control authority, eliminates problematic angle-of-attack oscillations, and requires lower-bandwidth actuators.

Three-dimensional FE model is presented for perforation under normal and oblique impact of sharp nosed projectiles on single and layered ductile targets. Numerical simulations have been carried out to study the behavior of Weldox 460 E steel and 1100-H12 aluminum targets impacted by conical and ogive nosed steel projectiles respectively. Weldox 460 E steel targets of 12 mm thickness in single and double layered combination (2 × 6 mm) and 1100-H12 aluminum targets of 1 mm thickness in single and double layered combination (2 × 0.5 mm) impacted at 0°, 15° and 30° obliquity were considered for simulations. The results of monolithic and layered targets were compared for each angle of impact. Monolithic targets were found to have higher ballistic resistance than that of the layered in-contact targets of equivalent thickness. Failure of both the targets occurred through ductile hole enlargement. However, ogive nosed projectile failed 1 mm thick aluminum target through petal formation and conical nosed projectile failed 12 mm thick steel target through a circular or elliptical hole enclosed by a bulge at rear surface. The explicit algorithm of ABAQUS finite element code was used to carry out the numerical simulations. Various parameters which play critical role in numerical simulation such as element size and its aspect ratio have been studied.

Problem statement: Future generations of intelligent munitions will use Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) for guidance, fuzing logic and assessment of the battlefield environment. The temperatures fund in a gun system, however, are sufficient to damage some materials used in the fabrication of MEMS. The motivation of this study is to model the dynamic temperature distribution in a typical small-caliber projectile. Approach: An axisymmetric finite-element model of a projectile is developed to simulate temperatures through internal ballistics (the projectile is in the gun barrel) and external ballistics (the projectile travels in a free trajectory towards the target). Accuracy of the simulation is confirmed through comparison to analytical models and to payloads attached to experimental projectiles. In the simulation, the exact values for some boundary conditions are unknown and/or unknowable. A sensitivity analysis determines the effect of these uncertain parameters. Results: The simulation shows that friction at the projectile-gun barrel interface is primarily responsible for elevated temperatures in a gun system. Other factors have much smaller effects. The short duration of the internal ballistics prevents the frictional heat from diffusing into the bulk of the projectile. As a result, the projectile has a shallow, high-temperature zone at its bearing surface as it leaves the gun barrel. During external ballistics, this heat will diffuse through the projectile, but most of the projectile experiences temperatures of 56°C or lower. Simulation shows that the polymer package around a MEMS device will further attenuate heat flow, limiting temperatures in the device to less than 30°C. Conclusion: The finite element model demonstrates that a MEMS device may be engineered to survive temperatures expected in the ballistic environment.

Uncontained aircraft engine failure can cause catastrophic damaging effects to aircraft systems if not addressed in the aircraft design. Mitigating the damaging effects of uncontained engine failure and improving the numerical modeling capability of these uncontained engine events are crucial. In this paper, high strain rate material behavior of one of the most extensively used materials in the aircraft industry is simulated and the results are compared against ballistic impact tests. Ballistic limits are evaluated by utilizing explicit finite-element (FE) simulations based on the corresponding ballistic impact experiments performed at different material thicknesses. LS-DYNA is used as a nonlinear explicit dynamics FE code for the simulations. A meso-scale ballistic material model for a prototypical plain-woven single-ply flexible armor is developed and implemented in a material user subroutine for the use in commercial explicit finite element programs. The main intent of the model is to attain computational efficiency when calculating the mechanical response of the multi-ply fabric-based flexible-armor material during its impact with various projectiles without significantly sacrificing the key physical aspects of the fabric microstructure, architecture, and behavior. To validate the new model, a comparative finite element method analysis is carried out in which: (a) the plain-woven single-ply fabric is modeled using conventional shell elements and weaving is done in an explicit manner by snaking the yarns through the fabric and (b) the fabric is treated as a planar continuum surface composed of conventional shell elements to which the new meso-scale unit-cell based material model is assigned. The results obtained show that the material model provides a reasonably good description for the fabric deformation and fracture behavior under different combinations of fixed and free boundary conditions. Finally, the model is used in an investigation of the ability of a multi-ply soft-body armor vest to protect the wearer from impact by a 9-mm round nose projectile. The effects of inter-ply friction, projectile/yarn friction, and the far-field boundary conditions are revealed and the results explained using simple wave mechanics principles, high-deformation rate material behavior, and the role of various energy-absorbing mechanisms in the fabric-based armor systems.

This study focuses on developing a global/local three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of a Kevlar KM2® plain woven fabric applicable for examining ballistic impact from a spherical projectile. The impact event is modeled in LS-DYNA® including friction between the individual yarns as well as the projectile and fabric. When compared with the predictive capabilities of a 3D finite element model that includes the detailed undulating representation of the fabric architecture over the entire solution domain, the savings in computational effort afforded by the global/local model become especially attractive. The agreement with fully detailed 3D finite element simulations and ballistic experiments is also demonstrated.

The known fiber and polymeric-matrix material properties, unit-cell microstructural characteristics and unit-cell level finite-element analyses are used to construct a new ballistic material model for 0°/90° cross-plied oriented polyethylene fiber-based armor-grade composite laminates. The model is constructed in such a way that it can be readily integrated into commercial finite-element programs like ANSYS/Autodyn [ANSYS/Autodyn version 11.0, User Documentation, Century Dynamics Inc., a subsidiary of ANSYS Inc., 2007] and ABAQUS/Explicit [ABAQUS version 6.7, User Documentation, Dessault Systems, 2007] as a user material subroutine. To validate the model, a series of transient non-linear dynamics simulations of the transverse impact of armor-grade composite laminates with two types of bullets/projectiles is carried out. The results obtained are next compared with their experimental counterparts. This comparison revealed that a relatively good agreement is obtained between the experimental and the computational analysis relative to: (a) the success of the armor panels of different areal densities in defeating the bullets at different initial bullet velocities; (b) post-mortem spatial distribution of damage within the panels; (c) the temporal evolution of a bulge at the back-face of the armor; and (d) the existence of three distinct armor-penetration stages (i.e. an initial filament shearing/cutting dominated stage, an intermediate stage characterized by pronounced filament/matrix de-bonding/decohesion and the final stage associated with the extensive bulging of the armor panel).

Laminated ballistic composite panels are an important part of hard-plate protective body armour and may be subjected to a wide variety of impact conditions depending on the projectile, impact velocity and armour construction, to name a few. The ballistic response of laminated composite panels has been investigated through direct impacts of two non-deforming projectiles (7.5 mm diameter hardened steel 120° cylindrical–conical, and 9 mm hemispherical nosed) selected to enhance different failure mechanisms including penetration and delamination. Experimental and numerical studies were carried out to determine the ballistic response of laminated Kevlar® 29 and 129 composite panels, commonly used in protective body armour. These panels were impacted at velocities between 130 and 250 m/s, which were below the penetration limit of the panels. A numerical parametric study was initially undertaken to determine those material properties which reduce back face signature (BFS; maximum dynamic displacement), one of the important performance indicators for assessing personal protection. Experimental material characterization then allowed mechanical property data to be determined for numerical simulations, which showed good agreement with the experimental data, particularly for the conical projectile impacts on both types of Kevlar® panels. Numerical simulations of the impact tests accurately predicted the BFS and dynamic response for the conical projectile impacts, while the BFS for the hemispherical projectiles was slightly low. This can be attributed to the dominant delamination failure mechanisms, which may not be completely captured by the numerical model. Importantly, the numerical analysis accurately predicted the initial velocity of the panel back face for the hemispherical projectiles and the time to reach maximum BFS for the conical projectiles.

When a shotgun or rifle is fired, the shooter experiences an impact to the upper body known as recoil. This force felt by the shooter is a consequence of the momentum transfer from the accelerating ballistic charge to the firearm, which is ultimately transferred to the shooter as he/she restrains the firearm's induced motion. The accelerating ballistic charge responsible for the recoil has two components. The first is the acceleration of the projectile itself. The recoil associated with this action is known as primary recoil. The second component is associated with the acceleration of the gases created by the combustion of the gunpowder propellant. For competitors in the shooting sports, gun recoil can affect performance and create discomfort. An objective method of measuring felt recoil forces would be useful to evaluate methods of recoil reduction. An experimental test apparatus was developed to measure recoil forces of sporting rifles and shotguns. No modifications to the firearms themselves were necessary to make the measurements. Through both inertial and dissipative restraint mechanisms, the apparatus reproduced gun movement that was representative of that experienced by a particular shooter. This should result in measured recoil forces similar to those experienced by the shooter. The apparatus measures the horizontal shoulder force and the vertical force component exerted at the stock comb. The recoil event was found to be quite short, having duration on the order of 10 ms. Peak recoil forces for common shotgun target loads were in the range of 1.6-2.2 kN (360-494 lbf). The apparatus was found sensitive enough to measure recoil force differences among different factory loaded ammunition, and differences in recoil force imparted by different firearms shooting the same ammunition. The apparatus should prove useful for quantifying differences in felt recoil as affected by ammunition type, gunstock geometry, barrel porting, recoil reduction devices, and gun weight, among other factors.

This study evaluates the energy absorption, perforation and damage evolution created by cylindrical projectile of different nose geometries in woven roving mat/epoxy laminates with 0.45� orientation. A series of ballistic impact tests have been carried out on the laminate with projectile nose geometries representing hemispherical, conical, and conical with round nose and truncated tip. A gas gun projectile launcher set-up was employed to impact the target at different speeds. The damage pattern, perforation mechanism and ballistic limit for each type of projectiles have been studied. Truncated-nose projectile shows the highest ballistic limit while sharp-nose shows the lowest. A quasi-static punch test was carried out on targets with projectiles of above-mentioned nose geometries to assess the damage evolution at a constant strain rate. The maximum load required to cause perforation during punch test was noted for hemispherical-nose projectile. An in-depth layerwise analysis was carried out to analyse the damage in each layer. We analyze, with the computer code LS-DYNA, three-dimensional (3D) transient deformations of a 10-layer woven Kevlar armor held in a square steel frame and impacted at normal incidence by a 9 mm FMJ (full metal jacket), 124 grain projectile. The composite armor is discretized into weft and warp yarns to simulate its woven structure. The yarn is modeled as a 3D continuum. We consider failure of the yarn, and friction between adjoining layers and between the armor and the frame bars. For the armor perfectly bonded to the rigid frame bars, the computed residual speed and the residual kinetic energy of the projectile are found to increase with a decrease in the frame size implying thereby that the armor fixed in a smaller frame will have lower V50 than that of the same armor clamped in a larger frame. (The V50 of an armor equals the speed of a standard projectile that upon normal impact has 50% probability of just perforating the armor). For the armor allowed to slide between the frame bars, we have studied the effect of the pressure applied to the bars of the two- and the four-bar frames on the speed and the kinetic energy of the residual projectile. For both the two- and the four-bar frames, the speed of the residual projectile is found to increase with an increase in the applied pressure. Computed results also show that the armor fixed in the two-bar frame exhibits higher impact resistance than that held in the four-bar frame. The V50 is found to be ∼270 m/s when the woven armor is held in a four-bar frame with a clamping pressure of 200 MPa. The V50 decreases with an increase in the pressure applied to either the two-bar or the four-bar frames.

In the past, the presence of textile fibres in the bullet track of gunshot injuries in body regions covered with clothes was used to differentiate between entrance and exit wounds; as with handguns, a displacement of textile fibres was considered possible only in the direction of the shot. In the present study, the transfer of textile fibres from the entrance and exit regions into the bullet path was systematically investigated with the help of a skin-gelatine composite model. For this purpose, the skin of the bullet entrance and exit region was covered with textile fabric (jeans or jersey material), before conducting four test series of ten test shots each firing a 9-mm Parabellum full-jacketed projectile from a distance of 2 m. The length of the bullet track was 25 and 8 cm, respectively. Subsequently, the bullet tracks were microscopically investigated in sections for the presence of textile fibres. In all the investigated bullet tracks, textile fibres both from the entrance and exit regions could be demonstrated. The distribution pattern depended on the length of the bullet path and the extension of the temporary cavitation. The results are discussed in relation to the relevant literature.

This paper presents the results of a series of experimental tests, aimed at investigating the impact and dynamic response of a volcanic shelter. Similar shelters are to be installed in the Stromboli island (Aeolian archipelago, Sicily, Italy), to protect human lives from the pyroclastic eruptions of the volcano. Basically, the Shelter consists of two homologous reinforced concrete shells, interconnected by rubber-based special devices, which absorb and dissipate most of the impact energy. The Shelter has been specifically designed to resist, without damage, an impact with a 150 kg mass rock, knocking the surface of the external shell at 62.5 m/s speed. The experimental tests were carried out on a 1:2-scale model, using a testing apparatus purposely realised to simulate impact conditions comparable with those considered in the design. Impact energy and mass ratio between projectile and reinforced concrete shell were assumed as main experimental parameters and varied during the tests. A finite element model of the Shelter was also implemented and direct-integration time-history analyses were performed, to validate the experimental results. Reference to the Hertz's law was made to simulate the impact between the two bodies. The experimental tests proved the ability of the Shelter to resist impacts without damage. Acceptable agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results was found.

The aim of this work is to develop a methodology for the evaluation of the ballistic requirements of a helicopter component. The situation studied in the work refers to the possibility of a damaged helicopter performing an emergency manoeuvre and a 30-min return flight after the impact of a 7.62 NATO projectile on a shaft of the tail rotor transmission. The paper describes the finite element methodology adopted to simulate the impact of the projectile on the shaft, and outlines the hypotheses on which this methodology is based. The numerical simulation of the propagation of the crack originating from the damage caused by the impact is also described. It is thus possible to determine the time required to reach failure of the shaft. The effect of the residual stresses on the residual life of the shaft is studied in detail.

A new computational approach is developed to predict the impact behaviour of fabric panels based on the detailed response of the smallest repeating unit (unit cell) in the fabric. The unit cell is constructed and calibrated using measured geometrical (weave architecture, crimp, voids, etc.) and mechanical properties of the fabric. A pre-processor is developed to create a 3D finite element mesh of the unit cell using the measured fabric cross-sectional micro-images. To render an efficient method for simulation of multi-layer packs, these unit cells are replaced with orthotropic shell elements that have similar macroscopic (smeared) mechanical properties as the unit cell. The aim is to capture the essence of the response of a unit cell in a single representative shell element, which would replace the more complicated and numerically costly 3D solid model of the yarns in a crossover. The 3D finite element analysis of the unit cell is used to provide a baseline mechanical response for calibrating the constitutive model in the equivalent shell representation. This shell element takes advantage of a simple physics-based analytical relationship to predict the behaviour of the fabric's warp and weft yarns under general applied displacements in these directions. The analytical model is implemented in the commercial explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA, as a user material routine (UMAT) for shell elements. Layers of fabric constructed from these specialized elements are stacked together to create fabric targets that are then analysed under projectile impact. This approach provides an efficient numerical model for the dynamic analysis of multi-layer fabric structures while taking into account several geometrical and material attributes of the yarns and the fabric.

An efficient method was needed to perform ballistic testing using 0.30-cal. Fragment Simulating Projectiles at or near subsonic velocity in order to screen new resin systems for advanced composite/ceramic armor scaled-down test coupons. This technical note outlines the custom gun system and testing methods developed to enable this ballistic testing.

This paper presents the results of scale size experiments using a tungsten-alloy long-rod projectile fired against 97.5% Al2O3 ceramic targets at 1.8 and 2.6 km/s. Two targets were used, one having lateral steel confinement; the other without. The projectile overmatched the target, and residual projectile length and velocity were recorded using ballistic-syncro photography. Flash radiography was used during penetration of the unconfined target to obtain the penetration velocity. Manganin pressure gauges were also used to obtain additional data on the response of the ceramic target during penetration. Results from the eight experiments indicate that the confinement reduced the residual energy of the projectile at both impact velocities. Expressed in terms of the projectile impact energy, 55–56% was lost in the unconfined target at 2.6 km/s compared with 60% for the confined design. The same trend was found at 1.8 km/s with 68% and 72–73% for the unconfined and confined, respectively. Predictions using the QinetiQ GRIM2D hydrocode and a simplified form of the Johnson–Holmquist ceramic material model agreed well with the experiments for three out of the four test configurations. The predicted projectile erosion and retardation against the confined target at 1.8 km/s was excessively high. Analytical predictions using the Tate modified Bernoulli equation also gave reasonably accurate predictions for three of the tests, but values for the Tate target ‘strength’ extracted from experiments using a different target configuration were not accurate for the target design used in this paper. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Analytical solutions for the deformation, penetration, and perforation of composite plates and sandwich panels subjected to quasi-static punch indentation and projectile impact are derived. Discrete spring-mass models are used to calculate the impact response of the composite plates and sandwich panels. Equivalent load resistance functions are obtained from the quasi-static analysis and adjusted for high strain rate. A generalized solution methodology for projectile impact of composite plates and sandwich panels are then proposed based on three key factors: (i) the contact load duration, (ii) the through-thickness transit time, and (iii) the lateral transit time. A two-dimensional wave propagation model is used to determine the ballistic limits of E-glass/polyester panels and GLARE fiber-metal laminates, and predicted values are found to be within 20 and 13% of the experimental results, respectively. A quasi-static impact model is used to predict the ballistic limit for E-glass/epoxy-aluminum honeycomb sandwich impacted by hemispherical nose projectile and the predicted values are within 11% of test results.

Functionally graded materials have been increasingly used in the design of impact resistant structures. A functionally graded plate with a tailored ceramic to metal through-thickness gradient combines the superior features of ceramics and metals in the same material system. The ceramic-rich side provides good protection against projectiles, while the metal-rich side oers toughness and strength to maintain the integrity of the structure as much as possible. Thus, the ceramic plates are used for single impact applications, whereas the FGM can be used multiple impact applications with high ballistic performance. In this study, the damage and deformation mechanisms of aluminum plates and functionally graded sandwich plates have been investigated and their performances were compared to each other under ballistics impact loadings. The functionally graded sandwich plate is composed of a mixture of ceramic (SiC) and metal (Al) phases, at a ratio of which is determined by a power-law distribution of the volume fraction. In the ballistics tests with 9 mm Parabellum projectiles, having a brass jacket and a lead core were used. Both aluminum and functionally graded sandwich plates were manufactured by means of the powder stacking-hot pressing method, their ballistic tests were performed and it was determined that functionally graded sandwich plates have a better ballistics performance than an aluminum plate by examining almost a full penetration of projectile to the aluminum plate while a signicant penetration to the functionally graded sandwich plate was not observed.

The characteristics of engineered cementitious composites (ECCs) subjected to dynamic tensile loading and high-velocity projectile impact have been investigated and are reported in this paper. Hybrid-fiber ECC containing a combination of high-modulus steel fibers and relatively low modulus polyethylene fibers was adopted to achieve a desired balance between the ultimate strength and the strain capacity of the material required for impact- and blast-resistant structures. Dynamic uniaxial tensile tests at varying strain rates of 2× 10−6 to 0.2 s−1 were carried out, and ECC was found to be able to provide much higher enhancement in tensile strength than plain concrete and still be able to maintain pronounced tensile strain-hardening behavior. At higher rates of strain, ECC showed multiple-cracking behavior, similar to that observed from quasi-static tests, with tight crack width of about 0.1 mm . This paper develops an analytical model for the ballistic impact response of fibrous materials of interest in body armor applications. It focuses on an un-tensioned 2D membrane impacted transversely by a blunt-nosed projectile, a problem that has remained unsolved for a half a century. Membrane properties are assumed characteristic of the best current body armor materials (Kevlar®, Spectra®, Zylon®, S2 glass), which have very high stiffness and strength per unit weight, and low strain-to-failure. Successful comparisons will be made with extensive experimental data on such material systems as reported by Cunniff [Decoupled response of textile body armor. Proc. 18th Int. Symp. of Ballistics, San Antonio, Texas, 1999a, pp. 814–821; Vs–Vr relationships in textile system impact. Proc. 18th Int. Symp. of Ballistics, San Antonio, Texas, 1999b; Dimensional parameters for optimization of textile-based body armor systems, Proc. 18th Int. Symp. of Ballistics, San Antonio, Texas, 1999c, pp. 1303–1310]. Our mathematical formulation draws on the seminal work of Rakhmatulin and Dem’yanov [Strength Under High Transient Loads, 1961, pp. 94–152]. Under constant projectile velocity we first develop self-similar solution forms for the tensile ‘implosion’ wave and the curved cone wave that develops in its wake. Through matching boundary conditions at the cone wave front, we obtain an accurate approximate solution for the membrane response including cone wave speed and strain distribution. We then consider projectile deceleration due to membrane reactive forces, and obtain results on cone velocity, displacement and strain concentration versus time. Other results obtained are the membrane ballistic limit, or V50 velocity, and the residual velocity when penetrated above this limit. We then derive an exact functional representation of a V50 ‘master curve’ found empirically by Cunniff [ibid] to reduce data for a wide variety of fabric systems impacted by blunt cylindrical projectiles. This curve is given in terms two dimensionless parameters based only on fiber mechanical properties and the ratio of the fabric areal density to the projectile mass divided by its area of fabric contact. Our functional representation has no fitting parameters beyond one reflecting uncertainty in the effective diameter of the impact zone relative to the projectile diameter, and even then the values are consistent across several experimental systems. The extremely successful comparison of our analytical model to experimental results in the literature raises fundamental questions about many long-held views on fabric system impact behavior and parameters thought to be important.

The Walker–Anderson and Ravid–Bodner analytical models for penetration of projectiles in metallic plates are well known in the ballistics community. The Walker–Anderson model uses the centerline momentum balance in the projectile and target to calculate the penetration history into a semi-infinite medium, while the Ravid–Bodner model uses the upper bound theorem of plasticity theory modified to include dynamic effects. The Ravid–Bodner model also includes a rich selection of failure modes suitable for finite-thick metallic targets. In this paper a blended model is presented: momentum balance is used to calculate the semi-infinite portion penetration (before the back of the target plate begins to flow), and the Ravid–Bodner failure modes are used to determine projectile perforation. In addition, the model has been extended to handle multiple plate impact. Numerical simulations show that after target failure the projectile still continues to erode for some microseconds. This time has been estimated and incorporated into the model. Examples are presented for long-rod projectiles against thick and spaced-plate targets backed by a witness pack that is separated from the main target element(s) by an air gap. Agreement with results from numerical simulations is quite good.

The phenomenon of ordnance velocity impact of projectile on single and layered plates is of interest for many applications. In this paper. an experimental study of normal and oblique impacts or an ogive shaped, hard steel projectile on single and layered plates of mild steel and aluminium is presented. The projectiles were fired at an impact velocity of about 820 ms-1. The plate thickness was varied in the range 10 mm to 40 mm and the ratio of plate thickness to the diameter of the projectile varied in the range 1.5 to 13.0. Observations on target damage and measurements of incident and residual velocities for different angles of impact are presented. Plate thickness t*, for which the incident velocity is the ballistic limit, is determined. Computer simulations were carried out using a hydrodynamic code to simulate the normal impact of a projectile and compared these with the experimental results. Experiments were performed to evaluate the response of these plates of intermediate thickness when layered. and the results were compared to the results of single plate of same total thickness.

An anisotropic cohesive model of fracture is applied to the numerical simulation of Coker and Rosakis experiments (2001). In these experiments, a unidirectional graphite–epoxy composites plate was impacted with a projectile, resulting in an intersonic shear-dominated crack growth. The simulations account for explicit crack nucleation––through a selfadaptive remeshing procedure––crack closure and frictional sliding. The parameters used in the cohesive model are obtained from quasi-static fracture experiments, and successfully predict the dynamic fracture behavior. In keeping with the experiments, the calculations indicate that there is a preferred intersonic speed for locally steady-state growth of dynamic shear cracks, provided that sufficient energy is supplied to the crack tip. The calculations also show that the crack tip can attain speeds in the vicinity of the longitudinal wave speed in the direction of the fibers, if impacted at higher speeds. In addition, a double-shock which emanates from a finite size contact region behind the crack tip is observed in the simulations. The predicted double-shock structure of the near-tip fields is in close agreement with the experimental observations. The calculations additionally predict the presence of a string of surface hot spots which arise following the passage of the crack tip. The observed and computed hot spot structures agree both in geometry as well as in the magnitude of the temperature elevation. The analysis thus suggests intermittent friction as the origin of the experimentally observed hot spots. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In modern medico-legal literature, only a small number of publications deal with fatal injuries from black powder guns. Most of them focus on the morphological features such as intense soot soiling, blast tattooing and burn effects in close-range shots or describe the wound ballistics of spherical lead bullets. Another kind of "unusual" and potentially lethal weapons are handguns destined for firing only blank cartridges such as starter and alarm pistols. The dangerousness of these guns is restricted to very close and contact range shots and results from the gas jet produced by the deflagration of the propellant. The present paper reports on a suicide committed with a muzzle-loading percussion pistol cal. 45. An unusually large stellate entrance wound was located in the precordial region, accompanied by an imprint mark from the ramrod and a faint greenish discoloration (apparently due to the formation of sulfhemoglobin). Autopsy revealed an oversized powder cavity, multiple fractures of the anterior thoracic wall as well as ruptures of the heart, the aorta, the left hepatic lobe and the diaphragm. In total, the zone of mechanical destruction had a diameter of approx. 15 cm. As there was no exit wound and no bullet lodged in the body, the injury was caused exclusively by the inrushing combustion gases of the propellant (black powder) comparable with the gas jet of a blank cartridge gun. In contact shots to ballistic gelatine using the suicide's pistol loaded with black powder but no projectile, the formation of a nearly spherical cavity could be demonstrated by means of a high-speed camera. The extent of the temporary cavity after firing with 5 g of black powder roughly corresponded to the zone of destruction found in the suicide's body.

The ballistic properties of shotgun shells are complex because of multiple projectiles fired simultaneously that interact and spread out to affect their energy relayed to a human target. Intermediate targets such as clothing can affect penetration into tissues. We studied the effect of common clothing fabrics as intermediate targets on penetration of shotgun shell pellets, using ordnance gelatin to simulate soft tissue and thin cowhide to simulate skin. A standard 12-gauge shotgun with modified choke was used with no. 8 shot ammunition. We found that protection afforded by fabrics to reduce penetration of shotgun pellets into tissues was greater at increasing distance from the muzzle beyond 40 yd (36.6 m). The thicker denim and cotton fabrics provided slightly greater protection than polyester. This study demonstrates that clothing modifies the potential wound patterns to victims of shotgun injuries.

The ballistic behaviour of thick steel armour plate at different obliquities has been investigated. Ballistic experiments were conducted in the velocity range 300-800 mls at 0°, 15°, 30° and 45° obliquity .A steel, conical projectile or 6.1 mm diameter was impacted on a 10 mm thick steel armour plate. At 30° and 45° obliquity, the plate offers protection up to a striking velocity of 800 mls. At zero obliquity, the plate provides protection below 6~ m/s. The depth of penetration decreases with increasing obliquity. The plate resistance does not decrease at higher obliquity observed in an earlier work.

Medical literature abounds with reports on injuries and fatalities caused by airgun projectiles. While round balls or diabolo pellets have been the standard projectiles for airguns for decades, today, there are a large number of different airgun projectiles available. A very uncommon — and until now unique — discarding sabot airgun projectile (Sussex Sabo Bullet) was introduced into the market in the 1980s. The projectile, available in 0.177 (4.5 mm) and 0.22 (5.5 mm) caliber, consists of a plastic sabot cup surrounding a subcaliber copper-coated lead projectile in typical bullet shape. Following the typical principle of a discarding sabot projectile, the lightweight sabot is supposed to quickly loose velocity and to fall to the ground downrange while the bullet continues on target. These sabot-loaded projectiles are of special forensic interest due to their non-traceability and ballistic parameters. Therefore, it is the aim of this work to investigate the ballistic performance of these sabot airgun projectiles by high-speed video analyses and by measurement of the kinetic parameters of the projectile parts by a transient recording system as well as observing their physical features after being fired.
