In the past, sustainable development was considered a guideline for all human activities, but the world has gradually changed. The criteria for action today must not only ensure sustainability but also meet appropriate ethical standards in diverse contexts. As a result, the topic of ethical behavior has been studied more extensively in recent studies. Accordingly, through bibliometric approaches, this study seeks to generalize the issues of ethical behavior explored in a variety of contexts from 1991 to 2022. A total of 1409 articles were found and extracted from the Web of Science using the keywords "ethical behavior" and "context"; they were then decoded using VOSviewer software (version 1.6). Three techniques, including bibliographic coupling, co-citation, and co-occurrence were conducted to identify the six most influential contexts in ethical behavior. The results demonstrate that the six most influential contexts in ethical behavior are consumption, leadership, business, organization, medical, and education. The results further revealed that leading countries such as the USA and UK have a larger number of studies on ethical behavior in many different contexts, such as organization, business, education, health, consumption, and politics. Religion and marketing ethics are an area of significant interest in literature that both play influential roles in shaping marketing professional's ethical and moral standards. This study aims to examine the impact of marketing professionals' religiousness in the context of Buddhism on ethical intentions and moral approaches and, while exploring the relationship between marketing ethics and Buddhism in a broader context. For this research, a face-to-face survey was conducted with the marketing professionals in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. The data obtained from these surveys were analyzed using SPSS, applying quantitative methods such as factor analysis, correlation, and mediation analysis. The findings reveal significant positive correlations between religious emotional involvement and ethical behavior, as well as between guidance from Buddhist teachings and ethical behavior. Furthermore, demographic factors like job position and income were found to partially mediate the relationship between religious involvement and ethical behavior. These results highlight the important role that Buddhist principles play in shaping ethical decision-making in marketing, offering new insights into the intersection of religion and business ethics. Purpose: This paper aims is to document the relationship between corporate ethics prevailing in the country and the dividend policies adopted by firms. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses the data of non-financial firms from 61 countries to test the arguments presented in this paper. The data cover the period between 2010 and 2017. Findings: This paper shows that dividend policies adopted by firms are sensitive to corporate ethics prevailing in the country. The firms headquartered in countries with relatively strong corporate ethics are less likely to pay dividends than firms headquartered in countries with relatively weak corporate ethics. These findings are robust across various proxies of dividend policy and across various estimation procedures. The paper, however, also shows that the relationship between corporate ethics and dividend policies is confined only to countries with strong institutional environment. This relationship breaks down in countries with weak institutional environment. Lastly, the paper shows that the value of dividend policy is more pronounced in countries with relatively weak corporate ethics. Originality/value: Unlike the attempts to relate firm-level ethics and dividend policy, this paper focuses on the relationship between country-level indicator of corporate ethics and dividend policies. From an institutional perspective we contribute to corporate governance of firms by (1) proposing a procedurally fair mechanism that is ethically desirable, and (2) experimentally testing whether procedural fairness crowds-in ethical behavior of managers (on behalf of shareholders) and workers. The experiment sees one 'manager' and three 'workers' (possibly representing three sections of the firm) co-determining an efficiency-enhancing investment which could harm some workers. Firstly, the manager claims a share of the investment surplus, then workers 'bid' for the investment to express their willingness to satisfy the manager's claim in case the investment is implemented. If the sum of workers' bids is less than the manager's claim, the investment is not implementable, which means its surplus will be lost. Workers' behavior is 'ethical' when they veto unfair managerial claims, because the workers have to sacrifice own earnings. Hence, a manager's fair claim is the ethical response to the threat of workers' veto. If the manager claims fairly, workers' ethical behavior is to 'truthfully' bid their investment evaluations; by all doing so, they equally share whatever surplus the manager has left for them. The experimental results show ethical behavior of managers in the form of fair claims. Despite these fair claims, workers behave less ethically by strategically underbidding. So the procedurally fair mechanism only partially crowds-in ethical behavior. What makes people behave ethically continues to be at the forefront of business ethics research. The stylistic makeup of the decision‐maker has been suspected to influence individual ethical behavior; however, this body of research accounts only for a handful of studies. This paper investigates the influence of decision‐making styles as an individual difference on unethical behavior, independently from other personal characteristics. Covering a sample of 230 managers, we utilize the preeminent measures of these two constructs in a self‐report survey. Our results suggest that the decision‐making styles of managers do influence their ethical behavior. Whereas managers with a dominant rational or spontaneous style behave ethically, having a more intuitive or avoidant makes them behave less ethically. The results also reveal that with higher levels of education, managers become more unethical. This research conveys important implications for management practice, education, and training. This study examines perceptions of ethical behavior based on surveys conducted over 35 years (1985 to 2020). The original research is based on questions presented to students in 1985 and 2001 (Emerson and Conroy, 2004). The authors used 25 vignettes in that study and surveyed at a large, private, religiously affiliated university. Several other researchers have used a subset of these same 25 vignettes to better understand student attitudes toward ethical issues within the corporate context. Our study compares a 10-question subset over time at multiple locations. These scenarios are divided into constructs for comparison to see if there is a time-based trend. The presupposed general trend is that students' ethics have improved. This study reports on statistical differences by year over time and on individual questions and themes. We find support for our hypothesis that ethics have improved in some instances, but the findings are mixed. The review of the constructs and individual questions should aid colleges and universities in identifying the strengths and weaknesses in their ethics curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new trend in the ranking of companies, not only in financial terms but also according to their commitment to ethics and corporate social responsibility (CSR), is explained by the importance of responsible investment and responsible governance criteria in the decision making of the shareholders and other investors. These new business evaluation criteria have attracted the attention of several stakeholders, such as investors, financial analysts, researchers, and also specialized media, that require quality information based on this social and ethical approach. The aim of this article is to examine the link between corporate social responsibility practices and the level of real earnings management (REM) of a sample firms belonging ESG index from five European countries. The variables related to the ethical behavior of companies have a statistically significant and negative relationship with the level of real earnings management. Indeed, the more important the socially responsible and ethical practices are, the less the company engages in an aggressive REM strategy. Thus, the integration of new dimensions in the explanation and determination of the REM is under-explored. The explanation of the quality of the results by ethical or social variables makes it possible to overcome the criticisms addressed to the contractual approaches of companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The corporate scandals of the twenty-first century have necessitated ethical behavior as a major component of the organizational process. These scandals occurred despite the ethical rules and laws in place, implying that rules and laws might not be effective in ensuring the ethical behavior of organizational participants at all times. Hence, a better approach to handling ethical decisions may be virtue ethics which demand the building of ethical character that intrinsically drives ethical behavior. Prudence was studied as a virtue which builds character and can moderate ethical behavior. The moderating role of prudence was studied in the context of organizational political behavior. Employee political behavior in organizations can have either positive or negative consequences; hence, it is in the realm of ethical decision-making. Since studies have not identified how individuals can self-regulate their desire for political behavior, the study proposed political prudence, a character-building virtue, as a self-regulating variable which can be used by individuals to avoid drifting to the dark side of political behavior. The study participants were drawn from three organizations in Lagos, Nigeria, and a cross-sectional research design was adopted for data collection. The results confirmed that political prudence moderated the effects of political will on political behavior such that individuals engaged in benevolent political will and avoided self-serving political will. The importance of the findings is that organizations have a means of steering participants away from the dark side to the bright side of political behavior which is useful for productivity. Absence of ethical norms in business life causes great damage both to individual organizations and to the overall world economy. In order to determine where the border is, whether something is moral in business or not, business ethics and the relationship between economics and ethics are investigated. Determining the boundaries of business ethics today is a big challenge for every leader and manager, as well as for all employees. It is certainly a matter of personal decision, personal experience of a certain situation, interest, need and motive, a matter of personal moral integrity, but also a matter of cultural heritage, expectations and pressures coming from companies and the environment. Purpose: Given the rising global interest in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) index, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of social and ethical practices on the firm's environmental disclosure level. Design/methodology/approach: To test the study's hypotheses, the authors applied linear regressions with a data panel using the Thomson Reuters ASSET4 and Bloomberg database from seven countries in analyzing data of 523 listed companies selected from the ESG index between 2005 and 2017. Similarly, as an extension of the research and to address the potential unobserved heterogeneity and the dynamic endogeneity, the authors exploited the dynamic dimension of the data set through the generalized moment method (GMM) and estimated the impact of the one-year lagged value of the environmental disclosure. Findings: The empirical results indicate a growing interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical practices over the past decade. Besides, companies with a strong social and ethical commitment obtain significantly higher environmental disclosure scores. The results found with the GMM technique indicate the existence of dependence and continuity in environmental disclosure over time. Practical implications: The research enables the information user to assess the transparency of the company as well as the quality of the information disclosed on its environment and its future growth opportunities in a context where the approach of business ethics occupies a central position in business valuation. The reached results suggest that the institutional and/or cultural factors affect top management's environmental reporting behavior regarding the quality of published information. Originality/value: This paper explores, for the first time, the effect of the social and ethical practices of ESG companies with seven different nationalities as well as its dynamic effect on the adoption of an environmental transparency strategy. Purpose: This paper aims to examine the effect of the corporate ethical approach on the cost of equity capital. This study is conducted on a large international sample on behalf of the world's most engaged firms from an ethical point of view in 2015. Design/methodology/approach: The multivariate linear regression model is used to meet the purpose of this study and research hypotheses are also examined using a sample of 80 of most ethical firms in the world during the year 2015. Moreover, three variables (i.e. business ethics, corporate social responsibility and executive compensation based on the achievement of sustainable development goals) are used to reflect the corporate ethical approach and the implied cost of equity capital is used for estimating the cost of equity. In this regard, equity cost estimation is the most appropriate approach to test the effect of business ethics on the cost of financing firms. Findings: Based on a sample of 80 firms emerging as the world's most ethical firms in 2015, the results revealed that firms with better ethics scores are significantly associated with a reduced cost of equity capital. This paper also demonstrates that the executive incentive pays that are based on the objectives of sustainable development are able to explain different outcomes regarding the relation between corporate ethical behaviors and the cost of equity. These findings support arguments in the literature that firms with socially responsible practices have a higher valuation and lower risk. Originality/value: This study provides implications for global regulators and policymakers when setting social reporting standards, suggesting that corporate ethical engagement reduces the cost of equity capital by decreasing the information asymmetry and thereby reducing the firms' risk. Therefore, the findings may be informative to international managers and investors when considering the effect of business ethics on the firm's ex-ante cost of equity. In this perspective, the voluntary disclosure of information makes it possible to mitigate the problems of asymmetry of information and conflict of interest between the firm and its main providers of capital, which could reduce the cost of equity. U.S. Organizational Sentencing Guidelines provide firms with incentives to develop formal ethics programs to promote ethical organizational cultures and thereby decrease corporate offenses. Yet critics argue such programs are cosmetic. Here we studied bank employees before and after the introduction of formal ethics training-an important component of formal ethics programs-to examine the effects of training on ethical organizational culture. Two years after a single training session, we find sustained, positive effects on indicators of an ethical organizational culture (observed unethical behavior, intentions to behave ethically, perceptions of organizational efficacy in managing ethics, and the firm's normative structure). While espoused organizational values also rose in importance post-training, the boost dissipated after the second year which suggests perceptions of values are not driving sustained behavioral improvements. This finding conflicts with past theory which asserts that enduring behavioral improvements arise from the inculcation of organizational values. Implications for future research are discussed. This paper aims at dealing with ethics and its applicability to the conduct of daily life in organizations and in the profession. It constructs the definition of ethics, ethics on a daily basis, ethics and codes of conduct for organizations and ethics in the profession. It ends by questioning the role of being a professional and why having a profession. It approaches ethics in accordance with the new moment we live in the infosphere and the behavioral changes of beings increasingly affected by technologies. It aims to lead the reader, both as a citizen and as a professional, to reflect on their behavior and conduct nowadays and calls for more ethical conduct. It is a theoretical, reflective, applicable and qualitative study. It concludes that professions emerge, evolve and disappear with the evolution of society, production methods and technologies. Another conclusion raised from this study is that conduct and behavior change as society and culture evolve, but ethics persist. Researchers concluded through this study that it is possible for people, both in the staff and in the professional field, to have ethical conduct and be prosperous in times when technology and infosphere prevail. Untl recently, in business practce, there was a belief that companies were operatng solely for the proft of their owners. Few companies have recognized the need to combine their actvites with ethics, and in partcular with their obligatons toward society or the environment. However, the percepton of ethical issues has changed radically in business over the last 20 years. If a company wants to be perceived as a reliable business partner and a respected member of the business sector, it should demonstrate a high level of insttutonalizaton of business ethics principles and practces, and it must practce outstanding ethical behavior. This is exceptonally true in some controversial industries. The purpose of our study is to identfy the scale and scope of the use of these principles and practces in two Central European countries, i.e., Poland and Hungary, in three controversial sectors of the economy, i.e., pharmaceutcal, tobacco and alcohol. The data were achieved on the basis of data gathered through survey methodology. The target subjects included a group of 48 companies (25 Hungarian and 23 Polish ones). Our survey mainly focused on the degree of insttutonalizaton of business ethics (such as the presence of a code of conduct, an employee appointed to deal with ethical issues, ethical training, and so on), the perceived ethical behavior of the frms, and their relatonship with their key stakeholders. Our study confrmed that business ethics is regarded as a signifcant factor which has an influence on business success and the corporate image of companies from the sectors in queston. However, it is necessary to emphasize that the scale of this phenomenon varies, across both sectors and countries. The level of insttutonalizaton is somewhat higher at Hungarian frms while preventng and handling corrupton cases are more at the forefront of Polish companies. Although it seems that stakeholders from Polish frms have greater ethical expectatons, we did not observe signifcant differences between perceived ethical behavior in the two countries. The originality of the paper is the result of the presentaton of unique qualitatve research related to business ethics in sensitve sectors of the economy in two Central European countries. To the best of our knowledge, such research is relatvely rare (due to the sensitve nature of the sectors analyzed) not only in these two countries but also on an internatonal scale.

The case describes how a senior functionary in a multinational bank used his position and authority to siphon funds from bank reconciliations which were not properly reconciled and were too long to be monitored closely. The dangers therefore of having a large number of old outstanding items in reconciliations are highlighted as well as the unscrupulousness of individuals who capitalize on their knowledge of financial systems. The danger of having a Chief Executive Officer who is easily carried away by sycophants also comes out. The decision focus of the case is on organizational values and how these can affect the minds of employees negatively if these values are not properly nurtured and spread throughout the organization. Incorrect values, even in a single individual, can also damage the reputation of an organization and bring it a bad name in the market in which it operates. The case brings into sharp focus the inherent dangers of having such individuals in the organization and the importance of cultivating and spreading organizational values of the highest order. We find ourselves in times where national leaders engage in fraudulent and deceptive behaviors for personal and political gains, and multinational corporations use unethical practices to maximize their profits. Where dangerously defective products are released onto the market endangering the health and lives of consumers, and where news channels become opinion channels. Where the motto of the free market is reduced to a simple‘grab all you can, any way you can.’ In times such as these, it is difficult to teach and promote ethical behavior. A cursory look at the advertising messages and the spins put on issues by public relations people leaves one wondering if business ethics is anything more than an oxymoron – a self‑contradicting claim. In times such as ours (in 2017), it is crucial that institutions of higher learning continue to teach and foster ethical behavior and ethical responsibility. No doubt, it is an uphill struggle for educators to convince students to think and act in ethically appropriate terms when surrounded by corruption, deceit, and fraud. While no one will deny the need for ethical practices, teaching these values in a convincing manner remains a challenge. Using meta‑analysis of various University courses in ethics, the present paper attempts three goals. First, it builds a rationale for the importance of ethical behavior, the need for teaching it, and the criticisms of those who think it unnecessary to teach ethics. Second, it discusses various strategies used by universities and several educators in teaching and reinforcing ethical behavior. This section also offers a criticism of approaches and methodologies of teaching ethics. Third, it offers an outline for a syllabus for an introductory course in Ethics.

This study examines whether truth-telling in the form of honest reporting is associated with cognitive moral development. Conventional agency theory assumes that people are self-interested and willing to tell a lie to increase their personal payoffs, while recent empirical evidence shows that some people give up monetary rewards to tell the truth (e.g., Evans et al., Account Rev 76:537-559, 2001). The social psychology literature suggests that cognitive moral development influences individuals' ethical decisions. We carried out an experiment whereby participants submitted managerial reports in which truth-telling decreased their monetary payoff. Despite the fact that their decisions were not subject to monitoring, auditing, or reputation effects, some participants reported honestly or partially honestly. We find the relationship between honest reporting and cognitive moral development to be both positive and linear. Compared with those at lower stages of cognitive moral development, participants at higher stages of cognitive moral development were more likely to submit an honest report and give up potential monetary gains from lying. We further examine the economic impact of honest reporting on the firm's profit. With the assumption of self-interest and profit maximization, Antle and Eppen (Manag Sci 31:163-174, 1985) suggest that a contract with a hurdle-rate feature reduces managers' information rent. We find that in comparison with the expected outcome of a hurdle contract, the firm can yield higher profits with a trust contract by hiring managers with a P-score higher than 16.67. Requirements for business ethics education and organizational ethics trainings mark an important step in encouraging ethical behavior among business students and professionals. However, the lack of specificity in these guidelines as to how, what, and where business ethics should be taught has led to stark differences in approaches and content. The present effort uses meta-analytic procedures to examine the effectiveness of current approaches across organizational ethics trainings and business school courses. to provide practical suggestions for business ethics interventions and research. Thus, the primary questions driving this research are as follows: (1) what course characteristics moderate the effectiveness of ethics instruction?, and (2) have ethics education and training efforts improved? Findings suggest that professional, focused, and workshop-based training programs are especially effective for improving business ethics. However, results also reveal considerable problems with many of the criteria used to evaluate the effectiveness of business ethics interventions. The present research is focused on a quantitative analysis regarding the ethical attitudes of students, future practitioners, on the students' perception towards some ethically questionable practices, with the specific aim of identifying possible differences among groups with respect to gender. The practical importance of the applicative study is illustrated by the confirmation of the idea, present in many studies, according to which male participants have more unethically as compared to female participants and the fact that unethical attitudes acquired while at university continue after graduation, in the professional activity. To be and to remain ethical requires struggle from organizations. Struggling is necessary due to the pressures and temptations management and employees encounter in and around organizations. As the relevance of struggle for business ethics has not yet been analyzed systematically in the scientific literature, this paper develops a theory of struggle that elaborates on the meaning and dimensions of struggle in organizations, why and when it is needed, and what its antecedents and consequences are. An important conclusion is that the greater the ethics gap and opposing forces, the greater the struggle required. Reflective learning practice embedded across the business curriculum is a powerful way to equip students with intentionally formed moral habits of the mind and heart. This article explores why and how to apply reflective learning to the teaching of business ethics. To act with integrity in complicated work organizations, students need skills and practices that recognize emotional, intuitive, and social moral influences. Actively engaging in reflections designed to deepen self-awareness primes students to turn deliberately to the purpose they want to bring to their organizational lives. Moreover, by critically and openly reflecting with others, they better understand how to manage the cultural and social complexities needed to act with moral courage. Suggestions for using reflective learning practice to support moral action are offered, and I outline examples of how to add both personal and collective ethical reflection to a management course. The main focus of an article became the answers to questions: what factors control the behavior of people involved in business activities in a situation of choice between ethical and cost-effective action, and how important is ethics of individuals when they are making this kind of decision? Recent corporate disasters have brought leader integrity into limelight and it has become a popular topic for discussion in scholarly literature and popular press. Integrity has been a subject of discussion and debate amongst scholars for a long time, however, there appears to be no consensus in literature on the meaning of integrity and what does it entail. Some scholars equate integrity with actions that demonstrate high moral and ethical standards, for example De George (1993); others like Jensen (2009) call it an ethically and morally neutral term and equate it with the law of gravity. Due to the ambiguities and uncertainties, integrity in management remains a desired and contested topic. The scant empirical research focusses on the followers perceptions of leaders’ integrity, but what does integrity mean to the leaders themselves is not known. It is in this context that the current study aims to draw from the organizational leaders’ understanding, conceptualization and application of integrity in the workplace. How is integrity socially constructed by organizational leaders? What does it mean to them to be acting with integrity in the organizational context? The study employs qualitative research methodology using case study approach and purposive sampling method to select senior executives in the banking industry in South Australia. Data was collected using in depth one on one interviews with the participating informants. The interviews were semi-structured and evolved organically to get the information necessary to answer the research questions. The conversations were analysed using thematic analysis technique to get emic insights into the executives’ view of integrity and how it was applied in the workplace. The findings indicate that for the sample of informants, integrity is about ethical behavior which was expressed by the executives as, ‘doing the right thing’, where the ‘right thing’ meant ethical action. The findings are not supportive of the notion of integrity as a morally neutral concept. The findings of this study are to be used for scoping a larger study aimed at developing an inclusive and unified definition of integrity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The apparel industry supply chain is complex and constantly under scrutiny for its adherence to socially responsible practices. Thus, corporate social responsibility has emerged as an important aspect of business strategy for retail brands. A growing number of consumers expect apparel companies to exercise ethical behavior in their corporate business practices that aligns with consumers' own values and lifestyle choices. The purpose of this study was to develop and empirically test an integrative model based on macrotheories of human behavior. Study findings from a national sample of 407 consumers in the United States revealed that universalistic values, moral norms, expectations of ethical behavior, knowledge of environmental issues in the apparel industry, and attitudes all had significant and positive effects on consumers' patronage intentions toward retail apparel brands engaged in socially responsible supply chain activities. While business school curricula offer courses devoted to teaching ethics, one of the ways professors can teach the subject to students is by conducting courses in an ethical manner with adherence to fairly-applied rules. Ethics is complicated! Employers want employees who operate with strong ethical foundations, honesty and integrity. Accrediting bodies expect institutions of higher learning to include ethical training in their curriculums in order to shape the future of business and society by educating students on how to appropriately handle ethical dilemmas. One of the core values and guiding principles for the leading international accrediting institution for business schools, The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), is each school must encourage and support ethical behavior in both professional and personal actions of their students, faculty, administrators, and professional staff through appropriate systems, policies, and procedures. In this paper, we discuss how two universities have incorporated this standard into their business degree curriculum.
