Adverse weather conditions seriously threaten the traffic safety, especially for rainy days with the ponding water on the road surface, which potentially result in vehicle crashes, person injuries and crash fatalities. Automatic splashed water detection based on surveillance videos is an attractive way to effectively prevent the traffic accidents. However, surveillance videos exhibit great variations with lighting changes, illumination conditions and complex backgrounds, which pose great difficulties in automatic recognition. In this paper, a novel deep learning based approach is proposed to detect the splashed water. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work on this topic based on deep learning. An effective semantic segmentation network, called SWNet, is novelly proposed to extract the potential splashed water regions. An encoder-decoder structure is designed to capture the visual characteristics of splashed water. SWNet achieves high efficiency by reusing pooling indices and adopting the light-weight decoder. With the multi-scale feature fusion structure, SWNet integrates the coarse semantic information and detailed appearance information, which significantly boosts the accuracy and refines the edge segmentation. A weighted cross entropy loss for splashed water is adopted to cope with the unbalanced distribution between splashed water and backgrounds. Moreover, a splashed water attention module is designed to focus on the salient regions of moving vehicles and splashed water, by performing attention mechanism to integrate global contextual information in semantic segmentation. Experiments conducted on a newly collected splashed water dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been an effective paradigm for supporting computation-intensive applications by offloading resources at network edge. Especially in vehicular networks, the MEC server, is deployed as a small-scale computation server at the roadside and offloads computation-intensive task to its local server. However, due to the unique characteristics of vehicular networks, including high mobility of vehicles, dynamic distribution of vehicle densities and heterogeneous capacities of MEC servers, it is still challenging to implement efficient computation offloading mechanism in MEC-assisted vehicular networks. In this article, we investigate a novel scenario of computation offloading in MEC-assisted architecture, where task upload coordination between multiple vehicles, task migration between MEC/cloud servers and heterogeneous computation capabilities of MEC/cloud severs, are comprehensively investigated. On this basis, we formulate cooperative computation offloading (CCO) problem by modeling the procedure of task upload, migration and computation based on queuing theory, which aims at minimizing the delay of task completion. To tackle the CCO problem, we propose a probabilistic computation offloading (PCO) algorithm, which enables MEC server to independently make online scheduling based on the derived allocation probability. Specifically, the PCO transforms the objective function into augmented Lagrangian and achieves the optimal solution in an iterative way, based on a convex framework called Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Last but not the least, we implement the simulation model. The comprehensive simulation results show the superiority of the proposed algorithm under a wide range of scenarios.

Compared to the three-dimensional (3D) perovskite materials, the Ruddlesden−Popper (R-P) type two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites have indicated specific unique physical properties that include moisture-stable behaviours, exciton effects, and quantum confinements, making it a solid and potential candidate for optoelectronic applications. Nonetheless, while specific candidates have exhibited visible-blind ultraviolet (UV) photoelectric response, most R-P type 2D materials have been known to be photosensitive to visible light. In this study, an R-P type 2D lead bromide hybrid perovskite (C8H11FN)2PbBr4, (1, where C8H10FN is 4-Fluorophenethylamine) has been analyzed, which contained both inorganic frameworks and organic cations. Moreover, 1 exhibits a relatively wide optical bandgap of 3.30 eV, corresponding to that of the Br-based 2D R-P perovskites expected to exhibit selective photoresponse for the UV light. It is pertinent to note that the photodetectors based on the crystal of 1 exhibit spectral selective photoresponse for UV light with high detectivity up to ∼ 1.6×1011 Jones. Moreover, the trap density of 1 is estimated to be 1.34×1011 cm-3; the trap density of 1 was almost equal to that obtained in the high-quality 3D CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystals. Besides, under external environment, 1 illustrated excellent stability. The figures of merit for its photoconductivity make 1 a potential candidate for the visible-blind UV photodetection. This discovery opens up new vistas for the further development of optoelectric devices based on 2D R-P organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites.

Liver metastasis, the leading cause of colorectal cancer mortality, exhibits a highly heterogeneous and suppressive immune microenvironment. Here, we sequenced 97 matched samples by using single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics. Strikingly, the metastatic microenvironment underwent remarkable spatial reprogramming of immunosuppressive cells such as MRC1+ CCL18+ M2-like macrophages. We further developed scMetabolism, a computational pipeline for quantifying single-cell metabolism, and observed that those macrophages harbored enhanced metabolic activity. Interestingly, neoadjuvant chemotherapy could block this status and restore the antitumor immune balance in responsive patients, whereas the nonresponsive patients deteriorated into a more suppressive one. Our work described the immune evolution of metastasis and uncovered the black box of how tumors respond to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Significance: We present a single-cell and spatial atlas of colorectal liver metastasis and found the highly metabolically activated MRC1+ CCL18+ M2-like macrophages in metastatic sites. Efficient neoadjuvant chemotherapy can slow down such metabolic activation, raising the possibility to target metabolism pathways in metastasis. OBJECTIVE The utility of endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) in patients with acute ischemic stroke, large vessel occlusion (LVO), and low Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Scores (ASPECTS) remains uncertain. The objective of this study was to determine the health outcomes and cost-effectiveness of EVT versus medical management in patients with ASPECTS < 6. METHODS A decision-analytical study was performed with Markov modeling to estimate the lifetime quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and associated costs of EVT-treated patients compared to medical management. The study was performed over a lifetime horizon with a societal perspective in the US setting. RESULTS The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were $412,411/QALY and $1,022,985/QALY for 55- and 65-year-old groups in the short-term model. EVT was the long-term cost-effective strategy in 96.16% of the iterations and resulted in differences in health benefit of 2.21 QALYs and 0.79 QALYs in the 55- and 65-year-old age groups, respectively, equivalent to 807 days and 288 days in perfect health. EVT remained the more cost-effective strategy when the probability of good outcome with EVT was above 16.8% or as long as the good outcome associated with the procedure was at least 1.6% higher in absolute value than that of medical management. EVT remained cost-effective even when its cost exceeded $100,000 (threshold was $108,036). Although the cost-effectiveness decreased with age, EVT was cost-effective for 75-year-old patients as well. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that EVT is the more cost-effective approach compared to medical management in patients with ASPECTS < 6 in the long term (lifetime horizon), considering the poor outcomes and significant disability associated with nonreperfusion.

Herein, a new organic-inorganic hybrid cuprous iodide of [(Me)2-DABCO]Cu6I8 was prepared and structurally characterized with a novel three-dimensional (3D) [Cu6I8]2- framework. Significantly, this 3D cuprous iodide displays infrequent broadband red-to-near-infrared light emission (600-1000 nm) stemming from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons.

This article presents a new type of microwave-induced atmospheric-pressure low-temperature dielectric barrier discharge source, based on the principle of parallel plate transmission lines (PPTLs). This source is a simple structure with small size, large plasma discharge area, and low discharge temperature. Experiments show that linear plasma discharge with width of 15 mm can be obtained with input power of only 25 W at 2.45 GHz. The temperature of sample placed 1 mm vertically away from the nozzle and treated for 3 min is about 45 °C even with 60-W microwave input power, which proved its thermal safety even for the biomedical applications. Emission spectroscopy diagnosis indicates that the electron density of plasma can be controlled easily by adjusting the discharge gap and the dielectric thickness. It makes this source available for various applications. This work provides a new approach to obtain uniform linear plasma.

Most photochromic ceramics can back up post-irradiation to achieve color state transition. Unfortunately, color recovery usually requires exposure of material to external physical fields (such as light and heat), which severely limits the application as a convenient energy building material such as smart windows. Here, we report a kind of sodium niobate translucent ceramics whose photochromic effect can be completely self-recoverable without any external physical field stimulation. Based on the analysis of time-response transmittance, up-conversion emission spectra and thermoluminescence spectra, the behavior of carrier migration and trap capture/release in the process of self-recovery photochromic reaction has been proposed. It is believed that the emergence of intermediate trap level is an important factor to produce this spontaneous behavior. Moreover, by controlling the amount of rare earth doping and designing two types of materials with different carrier behaviors, Sm/Er-codoped NaNbO3 ceramics are regarded as an appropriate candidate for tracing the time of light irradiation and intelligent regulation of smart building materials. This work can promote the fundamental understanding and practical applications of self-recoverable photochromic bulk materials.

The sheer size and complex structure of light field (LF) videos bring new challenges to their compression and transmission. There have been numerous LF video compression algorithms reported in the literature to date. All of these algorithms compress and transmit all the views of an LF video. However, in some interactive or selective applications where users can choose the area of interest to be displayed, these algorithms generate a significant computational load and enormous data redundancies. In this paper, we propose an interaUser-dependent Interactive light field video streaming system eaming system based on a user-dependent view selection scheme and an LF video coding method, which streams only the required data. Specifically, by predicting trajectories and using projection models, the viewing area of users in a limited consecutive number of time slots is firstly calculated, and then a user-dependent view selection method is proposed to determine the selected views of users for streaming. Finally, with the novel LF video sequence formed by only the selected sets of views, an adaptive coding method is presented for different LF video sequences based on users’ gestures. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed interactive LF video streaming system can achieve the best performance compared with other comparison methods.

Accurate prediction of topographical correlation between craniopharyngiomas (CPs) and hypothalamus is important for treatment. This study sought to develop a predicting tool based on preoperative-MRI through radiological–surgical–pathological–outcome analysis. Third ventricle floor (TVF), mammillary bodies and cerebral peduncle were evaluated through preoperative-MRI. An eagle-head-like sign named “eagle sign” was observed. Normal TVF on sagittal-MRI was defined as the baseline. Variants of the sign were analyzed by comparing with the baseline and corresponding correlations of CPs with hypothalamus were verified using intraoperative records, histopathology and outcome evaluation. A total of 146 CPs patients, who undergone endoscopic endonasal procedure were divided into four groups based on the variants of “eagle sign”. Group A: 24 patients with the upward sign; group B: 81 with the downward sign; group C: 21 with the anterior TVF upward sign and group D: 20 with the unidentifiable sign. Surgical–pathological analysis showed significant correlations between 95.8% CPs in group A and 95.2% in group C with tumor topography and tumor adherence to the hypothalamus. These CPs had their origins beneath the hypothalamus. In contrast, groups B and D, with hypothalamic origin, showed hypothalamic infiltration by tumor in 97.5% and 95% of cases in groups B and D, respectively. Outcomes of groups A and C were relatively better than groups B and D. Predictive sensitivity and specificity of “eagle sign” were more than 90%. “Eagle sign” is an accurate tool for predicting topographic correlations between CPs and hypothalamus with high sensitivity and specificity.

Domain adaptation has demonstrated promising performance to learn models in new environments. It aims to transfer the knowledge learned in labeled source domain to a new target domain, avoiding expensive efforts of label annotation. Many popular methods attempt to assign pseudo labels to unlabeled target samples and train the models as if they are true labels. However, the pseudo labels contain inevitable noises while their training strategies would enlarge and accumulate the errors, so that the model easily overfits to noisy data. Instead of focusing on assigning correct pseudo labels, in this paper, an unsupervised domain adaptation approach is proposed by preventing the model from overfitting false samples. Two different types of restrictions are considered on the training data to leverage the intra-class centralization and inter-class normalization. Each training sample and individual category are equally treated, where each point has the same opportunity to contribute to the model learning. A novel class restriction loss is proposed, which is further integrated into a teacher-student architecture, where the outputs from the teacher are treated as the pseudo labels for the student. The whole framework is trained in an end-to-end manner. Extensive experiments conducted on several image classification benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the performance, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the role of plasma microRNA panel (miR-122, miR-192, miR-21, miR-223, miR-26a, miR-27a and miR-801) for prediction and surveillance of early tumor recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who had undergone liver transplantation (LT). Methods: The expression of plasma microRNA panel was assayed in 193 HCC patients (training cohort, n =151; validation cohort, n = 42). Sensitivity and specificity for detecting post-transplant HCC recurrence, and the relationship of microRNA panel expression with clinical characteristics were analyzed accordingly. The prognostic value of microRNA panel was compared with that of AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) and DCP (Des-gamma-carboxyprothrombin). Cox regression analyses were used to evaluate independent prognostic factors. Results: In the training cohort, the rate of positive plasma microRNA panel status at 7-14 days after LT (late phase; 44.2%) decreased than that before (76.2%, P < 0.001) and 1-6 days after LT (early phase; 78.5%, P < 0.001). At late phase, positive microRNA panel status correlated with higher early tumor recurrence rate (one year after LT) than negative status (45.9% vs 10.7%; P < 0.001). Patients with persistent positive microRNA panel status both before and after LT had the highest early tumor recurrence rate in this cohort (54.9%, P < 0.001). The results were consistent in the validation cohort. Cox regression analysis found that positive plasma microRNA panel status at late phase was the only independent risk factor for early recurrence (HR: 4.903, 95% CI = 2.195 - 10.951; P < 0.001). Dynamic monitoring demonstrated plasma microRNA panel status changed from negative to positive earlier than AFP and DCP upon recurrence, and the median time between positivity of plasma microRNA and imaging evidence of recurrence was 2.4 (0.5-10.0) months. Conclusions: Plasma microRNA panel could be a noninvasive biomarker for prediction and surveillance of early tumor recurrence in HCC patients who have undergone LT.

Introduction: The anterosuperior portion of the bulla lamella can extend into the frontal sinus and form the supra bulla frontal cell (SBFC) and supraorbital ethmoid cell (SOEC). This can affect the frontal drainage pathway and make surgery more challenging. Objectives: The aim of the study was to compare the anatomical characteristics of SBFC and SOEC in Chinese chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) patients and explore the relationship between the cells and frontal sinusitis (FS). The surgical skills in dealing with these cells were also studied. Methods: We prospectively identified SBFC and SOEC in 114 patients with CRS by computed tomography (CT). The sides of the patients were divided into groups A (with FS) and B (without FS). CT scans were analyzed to distinguish the SBFC, SOEC, and the drainage pathway. Statistical analysis was conducted to determine whether the cells were associated with the occurrence of FS. Results: The prevalence of frontal cells was as follows: SBFC: 9.65%, SOEC: 21.93%. There was an association between the presence of SBFC and FS (p < 0.05). The anterior drainage pathway was present in patients with SBFC and SOEC, anterolateral pathway in those with SBFC/SOEC coexisting with the frontal septal cell, and anteromedial pathway in those with SBFC/SOEC coexisting with the supra agger frontal cell. Conclusions: There was an association between the presence of SBFC and the occurrence of FS. Extension of the anterosuperior portion of the bulla lamella into the frontal sinus obstructed the drainage pathway posteriorly. Understanding the anatomy may help surgeons thoroughly dissect the bulla lamella.

Background and objective Ecological studies have suggested an association between exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5 ) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity. However, these findings are yet to be validated in individual-level studies. We aimed to determine the association of long-term PM2.5 exposure with hospitalization among individual patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Methods We estimated the 10-year (2009-2018) PM2.5 exposure at the residential zip code of COVID-19 patients diagnosed at the University of Cincinnati healthcare system between 13 March 2020 and 30 September 2020. Logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% CI for COVID-19 hospitalizations associated with PM2.5 , adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics and comorbidities. Results Among the 14,783 COVID-19 patients included in our study, 13.6% were hospitalized; the geometric mean (SD) PM2.5 was 10.48 (1.12) μg/m3 . In adjusted analysis, 1 μg/m3 increase in 10-year annual average PM2.5 was associated with 18% higher hospitalization (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.11-1.26). Likewise, 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 estimated for the year 2018 was associated with 14% higher hospitalization (OR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.08-1.21). Conclusion Long-term PM2.5 exposure is associated with increased hospitalization in COVID-19. Therefore, more stringent COVID-19 prevention measures may be needed in areas with higher PM2.5 exposure to reduce the disease morbidity and healthcare burden.

PURPOSEEffective treatment options are limited for patients with advanced (metastatic or unresectable) melanoma who progress after immune checkpoint inhibitors and targeted therapies. Adoptive cell therapy using tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes has demonstrated efficacy in advanced melanoma. Lifileucel is an autologous, centrally manufactured tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte product.METHODSWe conducted a phase II open-label, single-arm, multicenter study in patients with advanced melanoma who had been previously treated with checkpoint inhibitor(s) and BRAF ± MEK targeted agents. Lifileucel was produced from harvested tumor specimens in central Good Manufacturing Practice facilities using a streamlined 22-day process. Patients received a nonmyeloablative lymphodepletion regimen, a single infusion of lifileucel, and up to six doses of high-dose interleukin-2. The primary end point was investigator-assessed objective response rate (ORR) per RECIST, version 1.1.RESULTSSixty-six patients received a mean of 3.3 prior therapies (anti–programmed death 1 [PD-1] or programmed death ligand 1 [PD-L1]: 100%; anticytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein-4: 80%; BRAF ± MEK inhibitor: 23%). The ORR was 36% (95% CI, 25 to 49), with two complete responses and 22 partial responses. Disease control rate was 80% (95% CI, 69 to 89). Median duration of response was not reached after 18.7-month median study follow-up (range, 0.2-34.1 months). In the primary refractory to anti–PD-1 or PD-L1 therapy subset, the ORR and disease control rate were 41% (95% CI, 26 to 57) and 81% (95% CI, 66 to 91), respectively. Safety profile was consistent with known adverse events associated with nonmyeloablative lymphodepletion and interleukin-2.CONCLUSIONLifileucel demonstrated durable responses and addresses a major unmet need in patients with metastatic melanoma with limited treatment options after approved therapy, including the primary refractory to anti–PD-1 or PD-L1 therapy subset.

Objective: Smooth muscle cell (SMC) phenotypic switching is associated with development of a variety of occlusive vascular diseases. Paeonol has been reported to be involved in suppressing SMC proliferation. However, it is still unknown whether paeonol can regulate SMC phenotypic switching, and which eventually result in suppressing vasculogenesis. Methods: Murine left common carotid artery was injured by completely ligation, and paeonol was administrated by intraperitoneal injection. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was performed to visualize vascular neointima formation. Rat aortic SMCs were used to determine whether paeonol suppresses cell proliferation and migration. And murine hind limb ischemia model was performed to confirm the function role of paeonol in suppressing vasculogenesis. Results: Complete ligation of murine common carotid artery successfully induced neointima formation. Paeonol treatment dramatically reduced the size of injury-induced neointima. Using rat aortic primary SMC, we identified that paeonol strongly suppressed cell proliferation, migration, and decreased extracellular matrix deposition. And paeonol treatment dramatically suppressed vasculogenesis after hind limb ischemia injury. Conclusion: Paeonol could regulate SMC phenotypic switching through inhibiting proliferation and migration of SMC, which results in inhibiting ischemia-induced vasculogenesis.

The patients were divided into survival group and death group according to the prognosis, and the index between the two groups was compared. Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the correlation between each index and prognosis, multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to screen the independent prognostic factors.Results: Spearman correlation analysis showed that ALB level was negatively correlated with prognosis, age and APACHE II score were positively correlated with prognosis. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, ALB level, and APACHE II score were independent prognostic factors. The formula of age combined ALB level and APACHE II score was Y = X1-3.6X2 + 6.5X3 (X1 was the age, X2 was the ALB level and X3 was the APACHE II score), Y was positively correlated with poor prognosis, and the optimal cutoff value was Y = 40.96.Conclusion: Age, ALB level, and APACHE II score are independent factors that influencing the prognosis of patients with intra-abdominal infection, and the combination of age, ALB level, and APACHE II score can better assess the prognosis of patients with intra-abdominal infection.Keywords: intra-abdominal infection, formula, prognostic factors, the value of independent factors, single center

Unconventional surgical procedures may be utilized in treating complicated middle aortic syndrome (MAS), the outcome and prognosis of which remain largely undetermined due to limited numbers and significant heterogeneity of this population. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, this study aimed to assess the dynamic changes of postoperative aortic flow in seeking to unveil the relationship between hemodynamics and vascular remodeling and thrombotic events. One patient with middle aortic syndrome complicated with aortic rupture was treated with hybrid repair of extra-anatomic bypass and fenestrated endovascular aortic repair. The patient was followed-up for 8 months by computational tomography angiography and Doppler ultrasound. Thoracoabdominal aortic blood flow and locations with ongoing thrombosis at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively were simulated and analyzed. Remodeling processes, including low wall shear-mediated constrictive remodeling of non-stented aorta, neointimal hyperplasia at suture lines, and minimal thrombosis at various locations, were evident. Meanwhile, abdominal blood flow was tri-phasic at 1 month after surgery, and was reversed and stabilized at 6 months. The distribution of newly formed thrombus vary at different follow-up stages, which were in line with the numerical simulation of thrombosis from different postoperative time points. CFD-based sequential monitoring is of promising value in capturing dynamic changes of vascular outcome.

Gastric cancer (GC) is common in East Asia, yet its molecular and pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are differentially expressed in GC and may be promising biomarkers. Here, we investigated the role and regulatory mechanism of circTMC5 in GC. CircTMC5 expression was detected in human GC and adjacent tissues using microarray assays and qRT-PCR, while the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with GC were used to assess its diagnostic and prognostic value. The circTMC5/miR-361-3p/RABL6 axis was examined in vitro and vivo, and the immune roles of RABL6 were evaluated using bioinformatics analyses and immunohistochemistry (IHC). CircTMC5 was highly expressed in GC tissues, plasma, and cell lines, and was closely related to histological grade, pathological stage, and T classification in patients with GC. CircTMC5 expression was also an independent prognostic factor for GC and its combined detection with carcinoembryonic antigen may improve GC diagnosis. Low circTMC5 expression correlated with good prognosis, inhibited GC cell proliferation, and promoted apoptosis. Mechanistically, circTMC5 overexpression promoted GC cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis but inhibited apoptosis by sponging miR-361-3p and up-regulating RABL6 in vitro and vivo, whereas miR-361-3p up-regulation had the opposite effects. RABL6 was highly expressed in GC and was involved in immune regulation and infiltration in GC. CircTMC5 promotes GC and sponges miR-361-3p to up-regulate RABL6 expression, thus may have diagnostic and prognostic value in GC. RABL6 also displays therapeutic promise due to its role in the immune regulation of GC.

Aims Interleukin (IL)-5 mediates the development of eosinophils (EOS) that are essential for tissue post-injury repair. It remains unknown whether IL-5 plays a role in heart repair after myocardial infarction (MI). This study aims to test whether IL-5-induced EOS population promotes the healing and repair process post-MI and to reveal the underlying mechanisms. Method and results MI was induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in wild-type C57BL/6 mice. Western blot and real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed elevated expression of IL-5 in the heart at 5 days post-MI. Immunohistostaining indicated that IL-5 was secreted mainly from macrophages and type 2 innate lymphoid cells in the setting of experimental MI. External supply of recombinant mouse IL-5 (20 min, 1 day, and 2 days after MI surgery) reduced the infarct size and increased ejection fraction and angiogenesis in the border zone. A significant expansion of EOS was detected in both the peripheral blood and infarcted myocardium after IL-5 administration. Pharmacological depletion of EOS by TRFK5 pretreatment muted the beneficial effects of IL-5 in MI mice. Mechanistic studies demonstrated that IL-5 increased the accumulation of CD206+ macrophages in infarcted myocardium at 7 days post-MI. In vitro co-culture experiments showed that EOS shifted bone marrow-derived macrophage polarization towards the CD206+ phenotypes. This activity of EOS was abolished by IL-4 neutralizing antibody, but not IL-10 or IL-13 neutralization. Western blot analyses demonstrated that EOS promoted the macrophage downstream signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) phosphorylation. Conclusion IL-5 facilitates the recovery of cardiac dysfunction post-MI by promoting EOS accumulation and subsequent CD206+ macrophage polarization via the IL-4/STAT6 axis. Translational perspective Accumulating evidence suggests that modulation of innate and adaptive immune responses is a promising therapeutic strategy for myocardial infarction. In this study, we demonstrate that IL-5 exerts cardioprotective effects on infarcted myocardium by promoting eosinophil accumulation and subsequent CD206+ macrophage polarization via the IL-4/STAT6 axis. Hence, regulation of cardiac IL-5 level or eosinophil count may become a therapeutic approach for post-myocardial infarction cardiac repair in humans.

Although deep learning has achieved promising progress recently, action recognition remains a challenging task, due to cluttered backgrounds, diverse scenes, occlusions, viewpoint variations and camera motions. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning model to capture the spatial and temporal patterns of human actions from videos. Sample representation learner is proposed to extract the video-level temporal feature, which combines the sparse temporal sampling and long-range temporal learning to form an efficient and effective training strategy. To boost the effectiveness and robustness of modeling long-range action recognition, a Densely-connected Bi-directional LSTM (DB-LSTM) network is novelly proposed to model the visual and temporal associations in both forward and backward directions. They are stacked and integrated with the dense skip-connections to improve the capability of temporal pattern modeling. Two modalities from appearance and motion are integrated with a fusion module to further improve the performance. Experiments conducted on two benchmark datasets, UCF101 and HMDB51, demonstrate that the proposed DB-LSTM model achieves promising performance, which outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for action recognition.

To investigate the duration of humoral immune response in convalescent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, we conduct a 12-month longitudinal study through collecting a total of 1,782 plasma samples from 869 convalescent plasma donors in Wuhan, China and test specific antibody responses. The results show that positive rate of IgG antibody against receptor-binding domain of spike protein (RBD-IgG) to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors exceeded 70% for 12 months post diagnosis. The level of RBD-IgG decreases with time, with the titer stabilizing at 35.7% of the initial level by the 9th month. Moreover, male plasma donors produce more RBD-IgG than female, and age of the patients positively correlates with the RBD-IgG titer. A strong positive correlation between RBD-IgG and neutralizing antibody titers is also identified. These results facilitate our understanding of SARS-CoV-2-induced immune memory to promote vaccine and therapy development., COVID-19 pandemic is a global health risk, but our understanding on the induced durable immunity remains scarce. Here the authors assess antibody responses in 869 convalescent COVID-19 patients to find that specific antibody titers reduce with time, and the RBD-IgG positive rate exceed 70% at 12 month post diagnosis, with male and older patients showing stronger responses.

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effect of anti-arcuate suture in treating pernicious placenta previa. MATERIAL AND METHODS We selected 81 patients diagnosed with singleton pregnancy with pernicious placenta previa at Suzhou Municipal Hospital from January 2015 to December 2018. Among them, 41 patients treated with anti-arcuate suture were assigned to the study group, and the other 40 patients were treated with conventional suture were assigned to the control group. RESULTS Compared with traditional suture, anti-arcuate suture significantly reduced blood loss and blood transfusion, and anti-arcuate suture also reduced postoperative complications. In the control group, 7 women underwent hysterectomy, but only 1 woman underwent hysterectomy in the study group. CONCLUSIONS Anti-arcuate suture in pernicious placenta previa can reduce postpartum hemorrhage and reduce postoperative complications.

It is controversial whether there is a different risk of recurrence between two histological subtypes in craniopharyngioma (CP) patients. Some reported that adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma (ACP) had a higher risk of recurrence than papillary craniopharyngioma (PCP), but others reported that there is no significant difference between them. So, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the association between the histological subtype of CP and the rate of recurrence. A comprehensive literature search was undertaken in PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science for all English articles published up to November 2020. Recurrence data stratified by ACP and PCP were extracted from studies meeting inclusion criteria. A pooled analysis of the association between the histological subtype of craniopharyngioma and rates of recurrence was performed. Thirteen articles containing 974 patients were included. When stratified by two pathological subtypes, the total recurrence rate of ACP was 26.0% and PCP was 14.1%, which showed ACP associated with a higher risk of tumor recurrence than PCP (odds ratio [OR] = 2.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.36, 3.30, P = 0.00). This is the first meta-analysis focusing on histological subtypes of CP. PCP associates with a lower risk of recurrence than ACP, indicating that ACP could act as one of recurrence risk factors for CP patients. Nevertheless, large sample size and well-designed multicenter studies in which the other clinical variables are controlled to determine the histological subtype of CP as an independent recurrence risk factor are needed.

This article attempted to construct a multi-factor quantitative stock selection model, analyze the financial indicators and transaction data of listed companies in detail via the big data statistical test method, and to find out the alpha excess return relative to the market in the case of short stock index futures as a hedge in the Chinese market.

BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is the fourth commonest malignancy in women around the world. It represents the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in South East Asian women, and an important cancer death cause in women of developing nations. Data collected in 2018 revealed 5690000 cervical cancer cases worldwide, 85% of which occurred in developing countries. AIM To assess self-perceived burden (SPB) and related influencing factors in cervical cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. METHODS Patients were prospectively included by convenient sampling at The Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University, China between March 2018 and March 2019. The survey was completed using a self-designed general information questionnaire, the SPB scale for cancer patients, and the self-care self-efficacy scale, Strategies Used by People to Promote Health, which were delivered to patients with cervical cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Measurement data are expressed as the mean ± SD. Enumeration data are expressed as frequencies or percentages. Caregivers were the spouse, offspring, and other in 46.4, 40.9, and 12.7%, respectively, and the majority were male (59.1%). As for pathological type, 90 and 20 cases had squamous and adenocarcinoma/adenosquamous carcinomas, respectively. Stage IV disease was found in 12 (10.9%) patients. RESULTS A total of 115 questionnaires were released, and five patients were excluded for too long evaluation time (n = 2) and the inability to confirm the questionnaire contents (n = 3). Finally, a total of 110 questionnaires were collected. They were aged 31-79 years, with the 40-59 age group being most represented (65.4% of all cases). Most patients were married (91.8%) and an overwhelming number had no religion (92.7%). Total SPB score was 43.13 ± 16.65. SPB was associated with the place of residence, monthly family income, payment method, transfer status, the presence of radiotherapy complications, and the presence of pain (P < 0.05). The SPB and self-care self-efficacy were negatively correlated (P < 0.01). In multivariate analysis, self-care self-efficacy, place of residence, monthly family income, payment method, degree of radiation dermatitis, and radiation proctitis were influencing factors of SPB (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Patients with cervical cancer undergoing radiotherapy often have SPB. Self-care self-efficacy scale, place of residence, monthly family income, payment method, and radiation dermatitis and proctitis are factors independently influencing SPB.

Sarcomatoid hepatocellular carcinoma (sHCC) is a rare type of liver malignancy. Currently, the tumor immune features of sHCC are poorly understood. We recruited 31 patients with resected sHCC for whom tissue samples and complete clinicopathologic and follow-up data were available. To understand the immune infiltration of sHCC, immunohistochemical staining was performed on the resected sHCC samples to compare the expressions of programmed death-1 (PD-1), programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), B7-H3, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), lymphocyte-activation gene 3 (LAG-3), CD8, FOXP3, and CD68 in tumor and peritumoral tissues. Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to assess the predictive value of immune markers. Sarcomatoid components were characterized with significantly higher expression of PD-L1 and B7-H3 in tumor cells than in conventional HCC components, as well as in peritumoral tissue. Additionally, sarcomatoid components had a higher density of FOXP3+ and LAG-3+ cells and a lower density of CD8+ cells than conventional HCC components or peritumoral tissue. Higher expression of PD-L1 in tumor cells significantly correlated with higher densities of CD8+, PD-1+, and LAG-3+ cells. Increased tumor PD-L1 expression and decreased CD8+ T-cell density were associated with poor overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in patients of sHCC. These findings suggest further characterization on relative mechanism of sHCC immune infiltration may identify therapeutic targets for immunotherapy.

In this study, we aimed to compare the therapeutic effects of secretome with MSCs on facilitating wound healing.Methods: Green fluorescent protein labelled adipose-derived MSCs (GFP-ADMSCs) or secretome was injected in the full-thickness skin excision model on SD rats. The wound healing process was evaluated by calculating the healing rate and the histological examinations on skin biopsy. The cell viability, proliferation and mobility of the rat dermal fibroblasts were compared after different treatments. The inflammatory response in macrophages was indicated by the level of nitric oxide (NO) and inflammatory cytokines through NO assay and ELISA.Results: On day 5 and day 14, both MSCs and secretome accelerated the wound healing, secretome further enhanced the process. GFP-MSCs were detected 10 days after transplantation. The level of IL-6 and TNF-α in blood was reduced after MSCs and secretome treatments. The expressions of VEGF and PCNA were increased after treatment, higher intensity of VEGF was observed in secretome-injected tissue. The concentrations of total protein and VEGF in secretome were 2.2 ± 0.5 mg/mL and 882.0 ± 72.7 pg/mL, respectively. The cell viability and proliferation of FR were promoted significantly after the treatment. The scratch test showed that secretome accelerated the wound healing speed. Secretome reduced the metabolism of macrophages remarkably, but it did not decrease the level of macrophage-secreted NO. The expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, MCP-1 and TNF-α) was downregulated significantly.Conclusion: Our study indicated both MSCs and MSCs-derived secretome enhanced the wound healing process in early phase. Secretome further promoted the healing effects through promoting the fibroblast proliferation and migration and suppressing the inflammatory response.Keywords: MSCs, secretome, wound healing, local injection, skin

Pullout tests for the deformed steel bars in early-aged cementitious grout by considering the variables of testing ages, cover thicknesses, and diameters of steel bar were conducted, and the local bond stress–slip relationship at different positions of the anchorage length of steel bar was studied. Results indicated that, with the increase of testing age, the load-slip curves exhibited a higher ultimate load and had steeper ascending and descending branches; however, the slippage at the ultimate load exhibited a decreasing trend. Moreover, with the increase of cover thickness and diameter of steel bar, the ultimate load of pullout specimens increased obviously, while the corresponding slips generally had no obvious correlations. According to an analysis of the measured rebar strain, the distributions of the steel stress and bond stress as well as the relative slip along the embedded length were obtained under different external loads. Steel stress transfer and bond stress distribution parameters were introduced to characterize the nonuniformity of the distributions of the steel stress and bond stress along the steel bar, and the effects of the testing age, cover thickness, and diameter of steel bar on these two parameters were analyzed. Results showed that the both of these two parameters increased with the increasing tensile load, testing age, and cover thickness and with the decreasing diameter of steel bar. Thereafter, the local bond stress-slip relationships along the anchorage length and position functions reflecting the variations of these relationships were proposed.

BACKGROUND Perivascular spaces (PVSs) are important component of the brain glymphatic system. While visual rating has been widely used to assess PVS, computational measures may have higher sensitivity for capturing PVS characteristics under disease conditions. PURPOSE To compute quantitative and morphological PVS features and to assess their associations with vascular risk factors and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). STUDY TYPE Prospective. POPULATION One hundred sixty-one middle-aged/later middle-aged subjects (age = 60.4 ± 7.3). SEQUENCE 3D T1-weighted, T2-weighted and T2-FLAIR sequences, and susceptibility-weighted multiecho gradient-echo sequence on a 3 T scanner. ASSESSMENT Automated PVS segmentation was performed on sub-millimeter T2-weighted images. Quantitative and morphological PVS features were calculated in white matter (WM) and basal ganglia (BG) regions, including volume, count, size, length (Lmaj ), width (Lmin ), and linearity. Understanding the pathophysiology of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) is necessary to reduce its harmfulness. Dilated perivascular space (PVS) had been found related to WMH. In the present study, we aimed to examine the topological connections between WMH and PVS, and to investigate whether increased interstitial fluid mediates the correlation between PVS and WMH volumes. One hundred and thirty-six healthy elder subjects were retrospectively included from a prospectively collected community cohort. Sub-millimeter T2 weighted and FLAIR images were acquired for assessing the association between PVS and WMH. Diffusion tensor imaging and free-water (FW) analytical methods were used to quantify white matter free water content, and to explore whether it mediates the PVS-WMH association. We found that most (89%) of the deep WMH lesions were spatially connected with PVS, exhibiting several interesting topological types. Gesture recognition has been widely used for human-robot interaction. At present, a problem in gesture recognition is that the researchers did not use the learned knowledge in existing domains to discover and recognize gestures in new domains. For each new domain, it is required to collect and annotate a large amount of data, and the training of the algorithm does not benefit from prior knowledge, leading to redundant calculation workload and excessive time investment. To address this problem, the paper proposes a method that could transfer gesture data in different domains. We use a red-green-blue (RGB) Camera to collect images of the gestures, and use Leap Motion to collect the coordinates of 21 joint points of the human hand. Then, we extract a set of novel feature descriptors from two different distributions of data for the study of transfer learning. This paper compares the effects of three classification algorithms, i.e., support vector machine (SVM), broad learning system (BLS) and deep learning (DL). We also compare learning performances with and without using the joint distribution adaptation (JDA) algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed method could effectively solve the transfer problem between RGB Camera and Leap Motion. In addition, we found that when using DL to classify the data, excessive training on the source domain may reduce the accuracy of recognition in the target domain.

Background: White matter hyperintensity (WMH) is closely associated with geriatric depressive symptoms, but its underlying neural mechanism is unclear. We aim to disentangle the contribution of vascular degeneration and fiber disruption to depressive symptoms in elderly subjects at different clinical status. Methods: One hundred and thirty-three normal elderly subjects, as well as 43 patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) were included. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) was used to measure depressive symptoms. Based on the diffusion tensor imaging data, a free water elimination analytical model was adopted to reflect fiber tract disruption (measure: tissue fractional anisotropy, tFA) and increased white matter water content (measure: free water fraction, FW). Results: We found that WMH severity was significantly correlated with decreased tFA and increased FW in all subjects. In normal elderly subjects, the HAMD score was correlated with mean tFA, but not FW. Compared to the traditional fractional anisotropy measure, tFA showed stronger correlation with clinical symptoms. In CSVD subjects, the correlation was only significant for FW, and marginally significant for tFA. Limitations: Most subjects had only mild to moderate depressive symptoms. Further validation in patients with major depressive disorder is needed to confirm these findings. Conclusions: The neural mechanisms of depressive symptoms may be different in elderly people with or without severe vascular damage. The free water elimination model may disentangle the effects of fiber disruption and increased free water, providing sensitive imaging markers that could potentially be used on monitoring disease treatment.

To investigate the association between white matter free water (FW) and common imaging markers of cerebral small vessel diseases (CSVD) in two groups of subjects with different clinical status. One hundred and forty-four community subjects (mean age 60.5) and 84 CSVD subjects (mean age 61.2) were retrospectively included in the present study. All subjects received multi-modal magnetic resonance imaging and clinical assessments. The association between white matter FW and common CSVD imaging markers, including white matter hyperintensities (WMH), dilated perivascular space (PVS), lacunes, and microbleeds, were assessed using simple and multiple regression analysis. The association between FW and cognitive scores were also investigated. White matter FW was positively associated with WMH volume (β = 0.270, p = 0.001), PVS volume (β = 0.290, p < 0.001), number of microbleeds (β = 0.148, p = 0.043), and age (β = 0.170, p = 0.036) in the community cohort. In the CSVD cohort, FW was positively associated with WMH volume (β = 0.648, p < 0.001), PVS score (β = 0.224, p < 0.001), number of lacunes (β = 0.140, p = 0.046), and sex (β = 0.125, p = 0.036). The associations between FW and cognitive scores were stronger than conventional CSVD markers in both datasets. White matter FW is a potential composite marker that can sensitively detect cerebral small vessel degeneration and also reflect cognitive impairments.

Recent studies have shown that programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) modulates distinct signal transduction pathways in different pathological conditions. Despite acute and chronic immune responses elicited by ischemia contributing to the functional deterioration of the kidney, the contributions and mechanisms of PDCD4 in acute kidney injury (AKI) have remained unclear. Using two murine AKI models including renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) and cisplatin-induced AKI, we found that PDCD4 deficiency markedly ameliorated renal dysfunction and inflammatory responses in AKI mice. Consistently, upregulation of PDCD4 was also confirmed in the kidneys from patients with biopsy confirmed acute tubular necrosis from a retrospective cohort study. Moreover, we found that overexpression of Fgr, a member of the tyrosine kinase family, dramatically aggravated renal injury and counteracted the protective effects of PDCD4 deficiency in AKI mice. We discovered that FGR upregulated NOTCH1 expression through activating STAT3. Most importantly, we further found that systemic administration of ponatinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, significantly ameliorated AKI in mice. In summary, we identified that PDCD4 served as an important regulator, at least in part, of FGR/NOTCH1-mediated tubular apoptosis and inflammation in AKI mice. Visual question answering by using information from multiple modalities has attracted more and more attention in recent years. However, it is a very challenging task, as the visual content and natural language have quite different statistical properties. In this work, we present a method called Adversarial Multimodal Network (AMN) to better understand video stories for question answering. In AMN, we propose to learn multimodal feature representations by finding a more coherent subspace for video clips and the corresponding texts (e.g., subtitles and questions) based on generative adversarial networks. Moreover, a self-attention mechanism is developed to enforce our newly introduced consistency constraint in order to preserve the self-correlation between the visual cues of the original video clips in the learned multimodal representations. Extensive experiments on the benchmark MovieQA and TVQA datasets show the effectiveness of our proposed AMN over other published state-of-the-art methods.

An ultrapure green phosphor with narrow emission range (525–535 nm) and full width at half maximum (FWHM < 25 nm) is critical for a backlit light-emitting diode to realize an ultrawide color gamut in liquid-crystal display (LCD), according to the Rec. 2020 standard. However, it is extremely formidable to achieve this goal for low-dimensional halide perovskites (LDHPs), which readily display broadband emissions arising from self-trapped excitons due to strong electron–phonon coupling. Herein, we report a new one-dimensional (1D) hybrid lead halide of [TMPDA]2Pb3Br10 (TMPDA = tetramethyl-1,3-diaminopropane) displaying unusual ultrapure green light emission. Benefiting from the synergistic work of weak electron–phonon interaction and strong quantum confinement, this 1D halide displays sharp green emission at 526 nm with narrow FWHM (25 nm), high photoluminescence quantum yield (71.95%) and color purity (91.1%), which achieves the Rec. 2020 standard and represents the purest green emitting LDHP to date. Remarkably, as a down-conversion green phosphor, [TMPDA]2Pb3Br10 provides an ultrawide color gamut covering 121.5% of NTSC and 90.7% of Rec. 2020 standards, showcasing the application in high-resolved LCD. The establishment of a fundamental structure–property relationship also paves a new way to rationally design novel narrow-band emitting LDHPs as a supplement of colloidal 3D perovskite nanostructures.

Recently, low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid metal halides have attracted considerable attention in solid-state optical application fields, especially in white-light emitting diodes (WLEDs) owing to intrinsic broadband luminescence performances. Herein, by selecting different types of organic cations as a structural decoration strategy, we designed a series of new 1D hybrid halides of A2Pb3Br10 (A = NPM, DMPDA, TMEN) based on same [Pb3Br10]4− chains composed of edge-shared [Pb3Br12]6− trimers. The low-dimensional crystal lattice results in the formation of self-trapped excitons, which leads to broadband light emissions covering the entire visible region for all A2Pb3Br10 homologues. Specifically, compound 1 exhibits yellowish-white light emission (0.34, 0.45) with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 2.51%. Both compounds 2 and 3 show bluish-white light emissions centered at 438 nm and 440 nm, respectively, with high color rendering index (CRI) of 96, which belongs to one of the highest values to date. The intrinsic broadband white light emissions enable them as promising candidates for single-component white-light emitting materials.

The Eu-doped K0.5Na0.5NbO3 pellucid ceramics were first prepared via a conventional solid-state reaction, and they exhibited light illumination-induced high-contrast photochromism of both optical transmittance and photoluminescence behaviors. Through thermal treatment, the optical performances could return to their initial states and displayed excellent reversibility. Eu3+ ions were selected as the luminescent activator for detecting the local environment of the K0.5Na0.5NbO3 host. Meanwhile, the effects of the amount of Eu3+ present on phase structures, microstructures, optical transmittance and photoluminescence intensities were systematically investigated. The results suggest that Eu-doped K0.5Na0.5NbO3 transparent ceramics possess multifunctionality including photochromism, photoluminescence and optical switching properties, and that they exhibit promising potential for non-destructive optical data storage application.

Influenza virus (IV) infections usually cause acute lung injury characterized by exaggerated proinflammatory responses. The paucity of therapeutic strategies that target host immune response to attenuate lung injury poses a substantial challenge in management of IV infections. In this study, we chemically synthesized a novel fatty acid (2Z,4E)-deca-2,4-dienoic acid (DDEA) identified from Chinese Cordyceps by using UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS techniques. The DDEA did not inhibit H1N1 virus replication but attenuated proinflammatory responses by reducing mRNA and protein levels of TNF-α, IFN-α, IFN-β, IL-6, CXCL-8/IL-8, CCL-2/MCP-1, CXCL-10/IP-10, CCL-3/MIP-1α, and CCL-4/MIP-1β in A549 cells and U937-derived macrophages. The anti-inflammatory effect occurred through downregulations of TLR-3-, RIG-I-, and type I IFN-activated innate immune signaling pathways. Altogether, our results indicate that DDEA may potentially be used as an anti-inflammatory therapy for the treatment of IV infections.

Photochromic (PC) luminescent ferroelectric materials have aroused great interest because of their potential applications in non-contact smart information storage materials and devices. In this study, we adopted the effect of rare-earth ions to refine the grains, combined with the unequal replacement of donor doping and higher temperature sintering methods to introduce more vacancy defects, to simultaneously improve the transmittance and photochromic contrast of KNNLB-RE ceramics. The optical transmittance of a typical KNNLB-RE > 50%, and the modulation contrast of KNNLB-RE is relatively significant, such as ΔAbs = 16.2% and ΔR = ∼34% for KNNLB-Er. More interestingly, the Tc of KNNLB-RE increased by about 10%–18% (∼30 °C–50 °C) due to the degradation of the relaxor-feature and the increase of internal stress, which broadens the temperature application range of KNNLB-RE ferroelectric ceramics. In contrast to most opaque inorganic photochromic materials, the KNNLB-RE transparent ceramics can express multiple pairs of “off” and “on” codes by using the reversibly decreased and increased transmittance and PL intensity; thus, these materials have potential in the applications of optical sensors and memories or other optical data storage devices.

Objective The objective of this study was to describe the different components of left atrial (LA) dysfunction predictors in nonobstructive and occult obstructive hypertrophy cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients especially with preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction, particularly using LA 4-dimensional (D) longitudinal and circumferential strains. Methods Twenty-eight nonobstructive HCM patients and 30 occult obstructive HCM patients according to LV outflow tract gradient at rest and after exercise were prospectively enrolled. 4D echocardiographic evaluation was performed in 58 HCM patients, both nonobstructive and occult obstructive, and 38 control subjects. LA reservoir, conduit, contractile functions were performed by 4D volume-strain with volumes and longitudinal, circumferential strains. Results Optimal correlation coefficients obtained between LV 4D mass (index) and LA 4D longitudinal/circumferential strain (r=-0.860 to 0.518, all P 0.75 and >0.85, respectively. Conclusions LA volumes were significantly increased and LA reservoir, conduit, and contractile functions were significantly impaired in HCM patients. Furthermore, different performances of LA functional analyses in nonobstruction and occult obstruction patients with 4D volume-strain echocardiography may facilitate the recognition of subtle LA dysfunctional differentiation in HCM patients.

Objectives: The most common type of noninvasive fungal rhinosinusitis is fungus ball (FB), which usually involves a solitary paranasal sinus. Multiple fungus balls (MFBs) are rarely reported in literature. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the clinical features of MFBs and solitary fungus ball (SFB). Methods: We retrospectively investigated consecutive cases of FB between 2001 and 2018 and compared the clinical records of SFB with MFBs with respect to demographics, clinical features, location, radiological findings, and operative outcome. Results: A total of 440 SFB and 43 MFBs cases were included in the study. The mean age was 55.3 ± 13.3 and 60.6 ± 10.9 years, respectively ( P = .011). The incidence of MFBs obviously increased from 2001 to 2018. The clinical symptoms and laboratory examination were similar. On computed tomography images, complete opacification, septal deviation, Haller cells, and obstruction of ostiomeatal complex were more common ( P < .05). The incidence of SFB on the left and right sides was similar, while MFBs were seen to involve both sides in 74.4%. Conclusions: Compared with SFB, MFBs showed some special characteristics. The MFBs affected older patients showed wide range of lesions and complex anatomy. Surgical technique is very important. Much more attention should be paid to this not so uncommon disease during the perioperative period.

This study investigated the value of circulating tumour cells (CTCs) as a predictor of recurrence following LTx in patients with HCC. METHODS This analysis included 193 patients with HCC who underwent LTx at our institute and accepted pre- and post-operative CTC detection; 38 were selected for serial CTC monitoring. The precise understanding of hypothalamic injury (HI) patterns and their relationship with different craniopharyngioma (CP) classifications remains poorly addressed. Here, four HI patterns after CP resection based on endoscopic observation were introduced. A total of 131 CP cases treated with endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) were reviewed retrospectively and divided into four HI patterns: no‐HI, mild‐HI, unilateral‐HI and bilateral‐HI, according to intraoperative findings. The outcomes were evaluated and compared between groups in terms of weight gain, endocrine status, electrolyte disturbance and neuropsychological function before and after surgery. A systematic correlation was found between CP origin and subsequent HI patterns. The majority of intrasellar and suprasellar stalk origins lead to a no‐HI pattern, the central‐type CP mainly develops a mild or bilateral HI pattern, and the majority of tumors with hypothalamic stalk origins result in unilateral HI and sometimes bilateral HI patterns. The proportion of tumors with a maximum diameter >3 cm in the no‐HI group was higher than that in the mild‐HI group, BMI and quality of life in the no‐HI group showed better results than those in the other groups. The incidence of new‐onset diabetes insipidus in the bilateral‐HI group was significantly higher than that in the other groups. Memory difficulty was observed mainly in the unilateral‐HI and bilateral‐HI groups. However, the outcomes of electrolyte disturbance, sleep, and cognitive disorder in the unilateral‐HI group were significantly better than those in the bilateral‐HI group.
