Variations in charges for modified radical mastectomies (MRM) and partial mastectomies (PM) were examined in a study group extracted from a 1996 database of over 542,000 hospital admissions covered by MetraHealth group health contracts. Findings revealed that the average total charge for an MRM among 1,049 women above age 29 was $10,000 in contrast to an $8,760 average total charge for PM among 347 insured women in 1996. The West South Central and Pacific areas charged the highest for MRM surgeries while Texas charged $12,890 for PM surgeries, almost 50% above the US average., An estimated 178,700 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the United States during 1998, 1,500 fewer than the American Cancer Society estimated for 1997.
