Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare malignant salivary gland tumor that occurs mostly in the parotid gland. We report a case of EMC of the submandibular gland in a young man. The patient was aware of a slow-growing mass in the right submandibular gland for 1 year. Clinical examination and ultrasound confirmed a right submandibular mass, 2.5 × 3 cm2 in size. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration indicated a diagnosis of pleomorphic adenoma, which was also suggested by magnetic resonance imaging. The submandibular gland tumor was excised. Immunohistochemical analysis showed carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma with a major epithelial-myoepithelial component. The patient was not treated with radiotherapy after surgery. No recurrence was observed during 24 months of follow-up. Because the morphology of EMC is similar to that of a benign tumor, it is frequently initially misdiagnosed. Surgery is always the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic measure for salivary gland tumors, especially those that grow slowly. Resection with negative margins is the treatment of choice for EMC; use of adjuvant radiotherapy is controversial.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of endoscopic optic nerve decompression (EOND) for adults with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) and seek factors that might affect surgery outcomes. Methods: From January 2016 to June 2019, 16 adults diagnosed with TON, who underwent endoscopic trans-ethmosphenoid optic canal decompression, were reviewed. All the patients were treated with steroids before the surgery. The main outcome measure was an improvement in visual acuity (VA) after treatment. Results: Eight (50.0%) patients had residual vision before the surgery, while eight (50.0%) had no light perception. After surgical decompression, partial recovery of VA was achieved in three (18.75%) patients who were operated within 10 days and had residual vision before the surgery. However, no improvement in VA was observed for the remaining patients (81.25%) who were operated more than 10 days after injuries. Conclusions: EOND is beneficial for TON not responding to steroid therapy and can prevent permanent disability if earlier intervention is done prior to irreversible damage to the nerve. Endoscopic optic nerve surgery can decompress the traumatic and edematous optic nerve with proper exposure of optic canal and orbital apex without any major complications. The operation timing and residual vision are important factors affecting outcomes.

Rainfall weather always degrades the quality of the images severely in the outdoor surveillance system. To improve the quality of images, different rain removal algorithms have been proposed recently. As the decomposition based methods do not need to impose any restrictions on the types of rain, they have a wider application prospect. However, they still have the problems of rain residue in the low-frequency components and information loss in high-frequency components. To solve these problems, we propose an image rain streak removal algorithm based on the depth of field (DoF) and sparse coding. Firstly, we decompose the image by using the combination of bilateral filtering and short-time Fourier transform, so that the contour in the low-frequency part of the image can be better preserved. Then the DoF saliency map of the image is used both to reduce the rain residue in the low-frequency components and to avoid mis-matching the background and the rain streaks with the same gradient in the high-frequency components. We use DoF saliency map as the weights for the weighted sum of the original image and the initial low-frequency image to obtain the corrected low-frequency images. The DoF saliency map is also used to twice weaken the rain streaks in the high-frequency image to generate the corrected high-frequency images. The algorithm includes four steps: image decomposition, dictionary learning, atomic clustering based on Principal Component Analysis and Support Vector Machine, image revising based on DoF saliency map. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed algorithm performs better both in rain removal and high-frequency information preserving than current methods.

Based on the pilot ecosystem analysis of Qianjiangyuan National Park, the ecosystem services function value index system was determined, multiple methods such as market value method and shadow engineering method were used to evaluate the four major categories in the years 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018 of the ecological services of Qianjiangyuan national park which are provision, regulation, culture, and support. Results show that the total value of the pilot ecosystem services in Qianjiangyuan national park had increased to 7430.11 × 106 yuan, 9128.41 × 106 yuan, 12,718.38 × 106 yuan, and 15,539.99 × 106 yuan for each category respectively. The regulation category has always been the core ecosystem services function in the national park, accounting for more than 40% of the value of the total services. The increase in the value of ecosystem services in the park was due to the implementation of ecological measures such as logging bans and people paying more attention to environmental protection.

Taking advantage of multiple new remote sensing data sources, especially from Chinese satellites, the CropWatch system has expanded the scope of its international analyses through the development of new indicators and an upgraded operational methodology. The approach adopts a hierarchical system covering four spatial levels of detail: global, regional, national (thirty-one key countries including China) and “sub-countries” (for the nine largest countries). The thirty-one countries encompass more that 80% of both production and exports of maize, rice, soybean and wheat. The methodology resorts to climatic and remote sensing indicators at different scales. The global patterns of crop environmental growing conditions are first analyzed with indicators for rainfall, temperature, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) as well as potential biomass. At the regional scale, the indicators pay more attention to crops and include Vegetation Health Index (VHI), Vegetation Condition Index (VCI), Cropped Arable Land Fraction (CALF) as well as Cropping Intensity (CI). Together, they characterize crop situation, farming intensity and stress. CropWatch carries out detailed crop condition analyses at the national scale with a comprehensive array of variables and indicators. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), cropped areas and crop conditions are integrated to derive food production estimates. For the nine largest countries, CropWatch zooms into the sub-national units to acquire detailed information on crop condition and production by including new indicators (e.g., Crop type proportion). Based on trend analysis, CropWatch also issues crop production supply outlooks, covering both long-term variations and short-term dynamic changes in key food exporters and importers. The hierarchical approach adopted by CropWatch is the basis of the analyses of climatic and crop conditions assessments published in the quarterly “CropWatch bulletin” which provides accurate and timely information essential to food producers, traders and consumers.

Allergic rhinitis (AR), characterized by the symptoms of sneezing, rhinorrhea, itchiness and nasal blockage, is a type I allergic disease of nasal mucosa, which is mainly mediated by IgE after exposure to allergens. At present, general drug therapy is limited to alleviating allergic symptoms but fails to regulate the allergic reaction; the recurrence of symptoms and the side effects of the drugs make many patients with AR resist treatments and bring serious impacts on the quality of life. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are a population of adult stem cells with multipotential differentiation capability, low immunogenicity, and immunoregulatory effects. The unique immunoregulatory properties of BMSCs make them hold great promise in the treatment of chronic inflammation and immune disorders through a paracrine mechanism of anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. The stem cell secretome is defined as the set of molecules secreted to the extracellular space. The secretome such as conditioned media (CM) obtained from BMSCs contains various bioactive molecules and vesicular elements, which may act as therapeutic mediators to support their immunoregulatory effects. Therefore, we hypothesize that the BMSCs secretome may represent a promising treatment for AR by anti-allergic effects via the paracrine mechanism.

Lane detection is already a basic component in modern vehicle control systems, with satisfying accuracy on labeled roads. There are still occasional problems of low accuracy and robustness in cases of challenging lighting, shadows, or in cases that road marking is missing. The paper proposes a new algorithm combining a model of road structure with an extended Kalman filter. Lane borders are detected by an adaptive edge detection operator based on scan lines. A new parameter space is defined to adjust the algorithm to the current lane model. All candidate lanes are extracted by voting of edge points. Road boundaries are obtained by considering various constraints. A new driveway model is specified according to roadway geometry and vehicle dynamics. The estimation of parameters is expanded for also covering driveway information. Coordinates of lane border points are tracked and estimated using an extended Kalman filter. Special attention is paid to enhancing stability and robustness of the algorithm. Results indicate that the proposed algorithm is robust under various lighting conditions and road scenarios; it is also of low computational complexity.
