Importance The current lack of reliable rapid tests for distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections has contributed to antibiotic misuse. Objective This study aimed to develop a novel biomarker assay that integrates FAM89A and IFI44L measurements to assist in differentiating between bacterial and viral infections. Methods This prospective study recruited children with febrile illness from two hospitals between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019. A panel of three experienced pediatricians performed reference standard diagnoses of all patients (i.e., bacterial or viral infection) using available clinical and laboratory data, including a 28‐day follow‐up assessment. Assay operators were blinded to the reference standard diagnoses. The expression levels of FAM89A and IFI44L were determined by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction assessment. Results Of 133 potentially eligible patients with suspected bacterial or viral infection, 35 were excluded after the application of exclusion criteria. The resulting cohort included 98 patients: 59 with viral diagnoses and 39 with bacterial diagnoses. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of diagnoses using FAM89A and IFI44L were 0.694 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.583–0.804] and 0.751 (95% CI: 0.651–0.851), respectively. The disease risk score (DRS) [log2(FAM89A expression) − log2(IFI44L expression)] signature achieved an improved area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC, 0.825; 95% CI: 0.735–0.915), compared with the AUC generated from individual host RNA. A combination of the DRS and the C‐reactive protein (CRP) level achieved an AUC of 0.896 (95% CI: 0.825–0.966). Optimal cutoffs for the DRS and CRP level were –3.18 and 19.80 mg/L, respectively. Interpretation The DRS was significantly more accurate than the CRP level in distinguishing between bacterial and viral infections; the combination of these two parameters exhibited greater sensitivity and specificity. This study provides information that could be useful for the clinical application of FAM89A and IFI44L in terms of distinguishing between viral and bacterial infections.

Objective To investigate the feasibility of subtraction coronary computed tomographic (CT) angiography (SubCCTA) to decline calcium artifacts and improve diagnostic accuracy in the presence of coronary calcification and analyze the factors that influence SubCCTA. Methods A total of 294 patients suspected of having coronary artery diseases underwent coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and SubCCTA. Coronary stenoses were blindly evaluated by two experienced radiologists, which were compared with invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Multiple statistical indexes were adopted to analyze the value of SubCCTA for the diagnosis of calcium stenoses. Results The diagnosable rate of SubCCTA was 67.2% (n=197), and the non-diagnosable rate was 32.8% (n=97). Using SubCCTA, the false positive rate decreased from 56.5% to 17.4%, and the corresponding diagnostic accuracy was increased from 83.6% to 92.9%. Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that height (OR=1.029, 95% CI=1.001-1.058), weight (OR=1.025, 95% CI=1.004-1.046), left ventricular size (OR=1.018, 95% CI=1.007-1.030), cardiothoracic ratio (OR=39.917, 95% CI=1.244-1281.098), the average heart rate (OR=0.866, 95% CI=0.836-0.896) and heart rate range (OR=0.882, 95% CI=0.853-0.912) might be the factors influencing SubCCTA. Conclusion This study suggested that SubCCTA could help improve diagnostic accuracy in the presence of calcium plaques. Moreover, several factors were discovered for the first time to possibly influence SubCCTA, which will be helpful in improving the subtracted image quality.

The aim of this study was to investigate the safety and clinical efficacy of mini-laparoscopic pyeloplasty in treating ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) in infants.We retrospectively analysed the clinical data of 66 infants with UPJO from January 2013 to August 2018 at our hospital. They were divided into the laparoscopic surgery group (group A) and the open surgery group (group B), depending on the surgical method.The bleeding volume, analgesia duration, postoperative hospitalization duration, and incision length in group A were significantly less than those in group B (Mini-laparoscopic pyeloplasty to treat UPJO in infants has the same early clinical efficacy and safety as open surgery, and this procedure has the advantages of fewer incisions, less pain, quicker recovery, and better cosmetic outcomes.

A novel method called the edge-triggered gate modulation method is proposed in this letter to decrease the voltage overshoot while maintaining high efficiency for high-power amplifiers (HPAs). In this method, the HPA is biased in high-efficiency mode, i.e., Class B/C, during the pulse-on period and switched to Class A on the rising/falling edge of the pulse. For verification, a pulsed HPA prototype operating in the X-band with an output power of ~ 1 kW is fabricated. Based on the proposed method, a relative efficiency improvement of more than 23.2% compared with conventional Class A has been achieved with the voltage overshoot thoroughly suppressed under a 1 0 / 00 duty cycle.

Background This study was designed to summarize the clinical outcomes of transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty for single-stage correction of proximal hypospadias in our hospital. Method This study retrospectively analysed the clinical data, including the preoperative general information, intraoperative and postoperative data, and follow-up data, of 155 children with proximal hypospadias who were admitted to our hospital from January 2009 to January 2019. Results During follow-up, a total of 92 postoperative complications occurred, and 41 patients underwent reoperation. There were 49 patients with urinary fistula, 26 patients with urethral stricture, 9 patients with urethral diverticulum and 8 patients with urinary tract infection. Regarding the family members’ satisfaction with the cosmetic appearance of the penis, the satisfaction rate with the urinary meatus was 85.2%, the satisfaction rate with the glans appearance was 87.7%, the satisfaction rate with the the appearance of the foreskin of the penis was 92.3%, and the satisfaction rate with the overall penis shape was 89.0%. Conclusion Proximal hypospadias is a serious condition that is often combined with severe chordee, and transverse preputial island flap urethroplasty for single-stage correction is an effective surgical procedure for treating this condition.

This study was performed to summarize our clinical experience with testicular descent and fixation through a scrotal stria incision for the treatment of palpable cryptorchidism in children. This study included 1034 children with palpable cryptorchidism from March 2009 to March 2019. A scrotal stria incision was used to perform testicular descent and fixation. Overall, 1020 children successfully underwent surgical testicular descent and fixation through a scrotal stria incision, and 14 patients underwent conversion to inguinal incision surgery. All patients were discharged 1–2 days after the operation. During hospitalization and follow-up, 55 patients developed complications, including 10 patients with testicular retraction, 7 with poor healing of the incision, and 38 with a scrotal hematoma. No patients developed testicular atrophy, an indirect inguinal hernia, or a hydrocoele. Testicular descent and fixation through a scrotal stria incision for the treatment of palpable cryptorchidism in children is safe and feasible in well-selected cases. This method has the advantages of no scarring and a good cosmetic effect.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to summarize the clinical experience with laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure of the internal ring using an epidural needle for inguinal hernias in girls.Material and methods: A total of 462 girls with inguinal hernias participated in this study from January 2013 to June 2019. Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure of the internal ring via an epidural needle was used to treat these patients.Results: All 462 girls with an inguinal hernia successfully underwent laparoscopic surgery. The operative times for unilateral and bilateral inguinal hernias were 15 (11-25) minutes and 23 (18-33) minutes, respectively. All patients were discharged 1-2 days after the operations. During the hospitalization and follow-up periods, none of the following complications were observed: hernia recurrence, umbilical hernia, abdominal wall vascular injury, intestinal injury or bladder injury. However, there were six patients with complications: two cases of poor healing of the umbilical incision, three cases of suture granulomas and one case of groin traction pain and discomfort.Conclusion: Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure of the internal ring using an epidural needle is a safe and feasible method for the treatment of inguinal hernias in girls. This method has the advantages of limited trauma, no scarring and a good cosmetic effect.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of the operation for type III esophageal atresia using a thoracoscope. Methods The clinical data for 92 patients with type III esophageal atresia in our hospital from January 2015 to December 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. There were 49 patients in group A who underwent thoracoscopic surgery and 43 patients in group B who underwent conventional surgery. Results The mechanical ventilation time (55.7 ± 11.4 h vs 75.6 ± 19.2 h), intensive care time (3.6 ± 1.8d vs 4.7 ± 2.0d), postoperative hospitalization time (13.1 ± 2.2d vs 16.8 ± 4.3d), thoracic drainage volume (62.7 ± 25.5 ml vs 125.4 ± 46.1 ml), blood transfusion volume (30.5 ± 10.4 ml vs 55.3 ± 22.7 ml) and surgical incision length (2.0 ± 0.5 cm vs 8.0 ± 1.8 cm) in group A were lower than those in group B, and the differences were statistically significant (P P P > 0.05), and there were no complications such as achalasia signs and esophageal diverticulum in either group. Conclusion Surgery for type III esophageal atresia via thoracoscopy has the same safety and clinical effectiveness as traditional surgery and has the advantages of smaller incision and chest wall deformity.

This case report presents a 1-year-old boy from China, with sudden onset of fever, convulsion, and sleepiness, screened for viral DNA in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample using next-generation sequencing (NGS) to diagnose herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) encephalitis, further validated by PCR. After acyclovir treatment, the patient's symptom disappeared and HSV-1 DNA unique reads decreased from 4290 to zero in CSF, and from 23 to zero in blood detected by NGS. The clinical presentation and outcome were consistent with the pathogenic diagnostic results of NGS. NGS of CSF samples can be used as a diagnostic assay for HSV-1 encephalitis and also might be a semi-quantitative method for evaluation of treatment effect.

Private query allows a client, Alice, to retrieve an item of a database hold by the server, Bob, without revealing which item he or she retrieved, while limiting his ability to access other items. In this paper, an efficient quantum private query (QPQ) protocol is proposed, where two oracle operations Ok, Od are utilized to encode the encryption keys and the encrypted data items into their corresponding quantum superposition states $\left | {\phi ^{\prime }} \right \rangle $ , $\left | {\psi ^{\prime }} \right \rangle $ , and the Grover iteration is also introduced to extract the target state $\left | {{d_{i}}^{\prime }} \right \rangle $ (i.e., the state of the encrypted data item Alice retrieved) from the superposition state. In order to guarantee the client’s privacy, the server Bob transmits all the encrypted data items of the database to the client Alice with oblivious transfer strategy. Compared with the previous qRAM-based or QKD-based QPQ protocols, our communication complexity (i.e., the number of transmitted qubits) is reduced from O(NlogN) or O(N) to O(logN), and the exchanged classical message is reduced from O(N) bits to O(logN) bits too. The security analysis shows our protocol can not only guarantee the server’s privacy but also the client’s privacy.

Summary: The heterogeneous pool of tissue-resident lymphocytes in solid organs mediates infection responses and supports tissue integrity and repair. Their vital functions in normal physiology suggest an important role in solid organ transplantation; however, their detailed examination in this context has not been performed. Here, we report the fate of multiple lymphocyte subsets, including T, B, and innate lymphoid cells, after murine liver and heart transplantation. In major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-matched transplantation, donor lymphocytes are retained in liver grafts and peripheral lymphoid organs of heart and liver transplant recipients. In MHC-mismatched transplantation, increased infiltration of the graft by recipient cells and depletion of donor lymphocytes occur, which can be prevented by removal of recipient T and B cells. Recipient lymphocytes fail to recreate the native organs’ phenotypically diverse tissue-resident lymphocyte composition, even in MHC-matched models. These post-transplant changes may leave grafts vulnerable to infection and impair long-term graft function.

Measurement for modeling of the high-power transistors is difficult due to its high-power and low-impedance characteristics. In this paper, novel methods and devices were designed and applied to achieve precise measurements of the high-power transistors. Fixtures capable of withstanding high voltage and current were designed to replace traditional radio frequency (RF) probes for higher power capacity. To reduce the impact of capacitive and inductive components of traditional bias tees on the rising/falling edge, two wideband 90° hybrid couplers that were connected back-to-back were designed for pulsed measurements. The measurement system of stable S-parameters with the Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) was reported, which could protect the devices and laboratory equipment from damage of self-oscillation. Application of several innovative approaches enabled accurate I-V characteristic and S-parameters measurements of high-power transistors in DC or pulsed mode. Experimental results of a 30 W gallium nitride high-electron-mobility transistor verified the validity.

Our CSR (corporate social responsibility) activities and innovation initiatives complementary? From a resource-based perspective, managers would develop CSR and Innovation's business strategy to create heterogeneity and build sustainable competitive advantage. Based on instrumental theories, CSR is a means for firms to accomplish economic output; therefore, CSR may lead or utilize Innovation for this purpose. As CSR is getting more attention, and Innovation is important for a firm's growth, to find the interaction effect of CSR and Innovation is getting more important. However, to our limited knowledge, there are fewer studies and discussions about the topic. Thus, the research would develop a new analysis model to study the topic. Regarding the methodology, four questions are designed to be answered, and two categories of the dataset are collected. These questions are: (1) Does CSR have an impact on firms' performance? (2) Does long-term investment have an impact on the firm's performance? (3) Does R&D have an impact on a firm's performance? (4) How does the interaction of CSR and Innovation investment impact on firm's performance? The datasets include finical data and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) ratings of firms. We would start the research from a typical industry in a country and look forward to a future extension to multiple industries across countries. We select Taiwan's electronics industry due to its important role in the global market, its leading position in Innovation, and its great efforts on CSR. So far, the research is still in progress. We would share the results, finding, and conclusion of the preliminary analysis. I look forward to your valuable comments for us to improve the analysis model and to find opportunities for further studies in other industries or other countries.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic pyloromyotomy for infants with congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS The clinical data of 233 infants with congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis who were treated at our hospital from January 2013 to January 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were divided into 2 groups: the laparoscopic group (group A, n=126) and the conventional operation group (group B, n=107). RESULTS Laparoscopic surgery was successfully performed in all patients in the laparoscopic group, and none of the surgeries were converted to open surgery. Compared with traditional surgery, laparoscopic surgery has obvious advantages in operation time (29.8±12.9 minutes versus 37.2±17.5 minutes, P=0.012), postoperative feeding time (10.3±2.2 hours versus 15.2±4.1 hours, P=0.035), postoperative hospitalization time (2.8±0.7 days versus 3.5±1.9 days, P=0.013), incision length (0.9±0.2 cm versus 3.3±0.8 cm, P=0.002) and poor wound healing (0 versus 6, P=0.007). No complications, such as bleeding, gastric perforation, duodenal injury, abdominal infection or recurrent vomiting, were observed in the 2 groups. The growth and development (weight and height) of the infants in both groups were normal. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy has the same safety and effectiveness as the traditional operation and has the advantages of less trauma, faster recovery and cosmetically pleasing incisions.

A coaxial-output rolled strip pulse-forming line (RSPFL) with a dry structure is researched for the purpose of miniaturization and all-solid state of pulse-forming lines (PFL). The coaxial-output RSPFL consists of a coaxial-output electrode (COE) and a rolled strip line (RSL). The COE is characterized by quasi-coaxial structure, making the output pulse propagate along the axial direction with a small output inductance. The RSL is rolled on the COE, whose transmission characteristics are analyzed theoretically. It shows that the RSL can be regarded as a planar strip line when the rolling radius of the strip line is larger than 60 times of the thickness of the insulation dielectric layer of RSL. CST modeling was carried out to simulate the discharging characteristic of the coaxial-output RSPFL. It shows that the coaxial-output RSPFL can deliver a discharging pulse with a rise time

Tissue integrity and repair is assisted by tissue-resident leukocytes, which also provide immediate responses to infection. It is unclear to what extent tissue-resident cells are perturbed following solid organ transplantation. For the first time, we report on the varied fates of 13 subsets of B, T and ILC lymphocytes after murine liver and heart transplantation in the absence of tissue mismatch and immunosuppression . Strikingly, donor-derived unconventional lymphocytes are predominantly maintained in livers, but not hearts, as long-term tissue-resident and self-renewing populations. In contrast, donor conventional lymphocytes are rapidly displaced by recipient populations, but this does not occur in the absence of recipient T and B cells. Overall, infiltrating recipient cells fail to recreate the native organ’s phenotypically diverse tissue-resident lymphocyte composition. These changes in post-transplant immunity are likely to leave the graft vulnerable to infection and impair long-term graft function.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to summarize the clinical experience of the laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure of the internal ring using an epidural needle for the treatment of inguinal hernias. Methods: There were 1,142 children with an isolated inguinal hernia who participated in this study from January 2013 to May 2018. An epidural needle was used to treat the indirect inguinal hernia with laparoscopic assistance. Symptoms and signs were followed up at 1 week, 3 months, and every 1-2 years after the operation. Results: All 1,142 children underwent laparoscopic surgery successfully. All patients were discharged 1-2 days after the operation. During the hospitalization and follow-up, there were 21 patients with complications, including 6 cases of hernia recurrence, 7 cases of poor healing of the umbilical incision, 5 cases of suture granuloma and 3 cases of groin traction pain discomfort. None of the following complications occurred: abdominal wall vascular injury, deferent duct injury, umbilical hernia, iatrogenic cryptorchidism, testicular atrophy, hydrocele, or scrotal oedema. Conclusion: Laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure of the internal ring using an epidural needle is a safe and feasible method for the treatment of inguinal hernias in children. This method has the advantages of less trauma, no scarring and a good cosmetic effect.

Background There is currently no research on the diagnostic value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for a single pathogens in CSF. The aim of this study was to analyse the value of mNGS for identifying Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) in paediatric bacterial meningitis. Methods Bacterial meningitis (BM) cases from October 23, 2014, to December 31, 2016, and December 1, 2017, to July 31, 2018 at Beijing Children’s Hospital were reviewed. Clinical features and pathogens were analysed. Results We diagnosed 135 patients with BM in this study. A total of 43 S. pneumoniae were identified by combination methods. 26/135 (19.3%) patients had positive results in S. pneumoniae by blood and/or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture. Alere BinaxNow®Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen test was positive in 35/135(25.9%) cases. 32/135 (23.7%) S. pneumoniae were identified by mNGS. Six CSF samples were identified as S. pneumoniae only by mNGS technology. Taking culture as the gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of mNGS for diagnosing S. pneumoniae meningitis were 73.1 and 88.1%, respectively. The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of diagnosing S. pneumoniae meningitis by mNGS were 59.4 and 93.2%, respectively. When comparison between mNGS and combined tests (culture and Alere BinaxNow®Streptococcus pneumoniae Antigen test), the sensitivity and specificity of mNGS for S. pneumoniae identification were 70.3 and 93.9%, the PPV and NPV in the identification of S. pneumoniae by mNGS were 81.4 and 89.3%, respectively. The difference in number of unique reads of S. pneumoniaein from CSF sample ( 14 days from onset) was statistically significant (170.5 VS. 13, P = 0.019). This study investigated iron-induced injury after warm ischemia in a non–heart-beating (NHB) rat liver model and the effects of deferoxamine (DFO). Livers from heart-beating (HB) rats or rats that were NHB for 60 minutes were stored in University of Wisconsin solution for 5 hours at 4°C [cold storage (CS)] and then were subjected to 2 hours of machine reperfusion (MRP) at 37°C. Three NHB groups were compared: (1) no DFO, (2) DFO 30 minutes before cardiac arrest and during CS and MRP, and (3) DFO during CS and MRP. Time-frequency spectrogram analysis is a basic method in passive radar and sonar. It′s necessary to enhance the line-spectrum to improve the performance in low SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) and strong interference presented that wider detecting range and long reacting time can be obtained. The traditional line-spectrum enhancing technology based on signal′s coherence can′t work well in very low SNR, and the performance will drop sharply when the line-spectrums are close in frequencies or the number of line-spectrums increases. A new method which combines image processing with signal processing is brought out to overcome these defects. It can work well when the SNR in frequency domain is close to 0dB,which is much lower than ALE and other traditional technology. The results derived from simulation and trial data analysis show that it′s stable and can be applied in the field with line-spectrums.

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is currently widespread and appears to be growing. As an increasing proportion of the population turns to CAM therapies, whether singly or in combination with allopathic medicine, the need for quality research in this area is reinforced. Much of this research consists of clinical studies aimed primarily at clinicians, yet challenges arising from poor methodological quality will occur when interpreting study findings and their implications. For clinicians to be effective consumers of the scientific literature, familiarization with the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM) is essential. The goal of this review is to introduce clinicians to the concept of critical appraisal of clinical studies and foster critical thinking when reading research articles in order to best evaluate and incorporate study findings into their daily practice. Topics discussed in this article include: (1) fundamentals of EBM; (2) types of clinical studies; (3) hierarchy of evidence; (4) Consolidated Standard of Randomized Trials (CONSORT) statement to evaluate the quality of reporting in randomized controlled trials (RCTs); (5) methodologic quality rating scales for RCTs; and (6) issues specific to evaluating studies of Chinese herbal medicine.

BACKGROUND Some immunosuppressive drug therapies inhibit transplant tolerance in animal models, and we have shown that treatment of recipients with methylprednisolone, but not cyclosporine, inhibits spontaneous acceptance of liver transplants. This study investigates the effects of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) on liver acceptance and rejection. METHODS Piebald Virol Glaxo rat livers were transplanted into Dark Agouti recipients, which spontaneously tolerate (TOL) the liver, or into Lewis recipients, which reject (REJ) the liver. MMF (40 mg/kg/day subcutaneously) was given for 5 days from days 0 to 4 (early) or from days 3 to 7 (late). In separate experiments, liver grafts were collected for assessment of infiltrate and of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10, and interferon-gamma mRNA expression. RESULTS TOL liver transplants had a median survival time (MST) of more than 100 days (n=6), and neither early nor late MMF treatment of TOL transplants reduced survival (MST 85 days, P=0.19 and 78 days, P=0.08, respectively). Liver failure in most of these animals was the result of biliary problems, not rejection. There were few consistent differences between treated and untreated TOL animals in infiltrate or liver cytokine expression, although there was a moderate reduction in T-cell infiltrate in MMF-treated TOL animals (P=0.003 on day 5 TOL). In contrast, REJ transplants had an MST of 13 days (n=10), and early MMF treatment led to five of six animals surviving more than 100 days (P=0.0002), whereas late treatment was much less effective, with one of six animals surviving more than 100 days. REJ livers had significantly more IL-4 mRNA expression and immunoglobulin G1 deposition in the graft than TOL livers, and this was inhibited by early, but not late, MMF treatment. CONCLUSIONS MMF treatment inhibited rejection but not acceptance of liver allografts. Early administration was more effective in preventing rejection and demonstrated a more marked effect on IL-4 expression and alloantibody deposition than on graft T-cell infiltrate and expression of other cytokines.

Background. Orthotopic liver transplants in many animal models are spontaneously accepted without requiring immunosuppression. Liver transplant acceptance is associated with early immune activation, and immunosuppressive drugs such as methylprednisolone inhibit acceptance. We investigated whether cyclosporine (CsA) inhibits rat liver transplant acceptance. We also examined the effects of CsA on infiltration and cytokine gene expression. Methods. Orthotopic liver transplantation was performed in the PVG donor to Dark Agouti recipient rat strain combination, which accepts the graft (tolerance; TOL), and in the PVG-to-Lewis combination, which rejects the graft in 9 to 16 days (rejection; REJ). CsA (1.5 mg/kg per day subcutaneously) was given to recipients for 5 days, starting from the day of transplantation to day 4 or from day 3 to day 7. In a separate experiment, transplanted livers were collected at days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after transplantation and examined for infiltration by immunohistochemistry and for expression of interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-10, and interferon-y mRNA by quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results. Both early and delayed treatment with CsA significantly increased survival in the REJ strain combination, with a median survival time of 81 days and more than 100 days, respectively, compared with 13 days in the untreated group. Neither treatment affected survival of TOL animals, and all TOL groups had a median survival time of more than 100 days. Delayed treatment did not reduce survival; more animals survived for greater than 100 days after delayed treatment, although this did not reach significance (P=0.08). T-cell infiltrate was inhibited in CsA-treated TOL animals compared with untreated animals at all times after treatment, whereas CD25 + cells were only inhibited on day 3. CsA treatment of TOL grafts markedly reduced expression of IL-2, IL-4, and interferon-y compared with untreated recipients. Conclusions. CsA did not significantly inhibit liver transplant acceptance and allowed some activation of T cells and CD25 expression but almost completely inhibited IL-2 and IL-4, which are required for survival of activated T cells.

Thin films of TiO2-doped ZnO (TZO) with TiO2 contents from 0.5 to 3.0 wt.% were deposited on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The microstructures and optoelectronic properties of the TZO films were characterized by XRD, Hall effect analyzer, UV–VIS spectrophotometry and physical property measurement (PPMS-9). Results indicate that the microstructure and optoelectronic properties of TZO films are strongly affected by the TiO2 content. The best optoelectronic properties were obtained with the film having 2.0 wt.% TiO2. This film had superior crystal properties, high average optical transmittance (89.0%), and the lowest resistivity (9.58 × 10[Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] ⋅ cm). Furthermore, the resistivity of this film changed with temperature between 10 and 350 K, they experienced an initial decrease followed by an increase as the temperature increased.

To evaluate whether desferrioxamine decreases ischemia and perfusion injury aggravated by cold storage (CS) in a rat liver perfusion model.Isolated rat livers were kept in CS in University of Wisconsin Solution for 20 h at 4 °C, then exposed to 25 min of warm ischemia (WI) at 37 °C followed by 2 h of warm perfusion (WP) at 37 °C with oxygenated (95% oxygen and 5% carbon dioxide) Krebs-Henseleit buffer. Desferrioxamine (DFO), an iron chelator, was added at different stages of storage, ischemia and perfusion: in CS only, in WI only, in WP only, in WI and perfusion, or in all stages. Effluent samples were collected after CS and after WI. Perfusate samples and bile were collected every 30 min (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 h) during liver perfusion. Cellular injury was assessed by the determination of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in the effluent and perfusate samples. Total iron was analysed in the perfusate samples. After WP, the liver was collected for the determination of liver swelling (wet to dry ratio) and liver morphological examination (hematoxylin and eosin staining).Increased CS time caused increased liver dysfunction during WP. After 2 h of WP, liver injury was indicated by increased release of AST (0.5 h CS: 9.4 ± 2.2 U/g liver vs 20 h CS: 45.9 ± 10.8 U/g liver, P0.05) and LDH (0.5 h CS: 59 ± 14 U/g liver vs 20 h CS: 297 ± 71 U/g liver, P0.05). There was an associated increase in iron release into the perfusate (0.5 h CS: 0.11 ± 0.03 μmoL/g liver vs 20 h CS: 0.58 ± 0.10 μmoL/g liver, P0.05) and reduction in bile flow (0.5 h CS: 194 ± 12 μL/g vs 20 h CS: 71 ± 8 μL/g liver, P0.05). When DFO was added during WI and WP following 20 h of CS, release of iron into the perfusate was decreased (DFO absent 0.58 ± 0.10 μmoL/g liver vs DFO present 0.31 ± 0.06 μmoL/g liver, P0.05), and liver function substantially improved with decreased release of AST (DFO absent 45.9 ± 10.8 U/g liver vs DFO present 8.1 ± 0.9 U/g liver, P0.05) and LDH (DFO absent 297 ± 71 U/g liver vs DFO present 56 ± 7 U/g liver, P0.05), and increased bile flow (DFO absent 71 ± 8 μL/g liver vs DFO present 237 ± 36 μL/g liver, P0.05). DFO was also shown to improve liver morphology after WP. Cellular injury (the release of LDH and AST) was significantly reduced with the addition of DFO in CS medium but to a lesser extent compared to the addition of DFO in WP or WI and perfusion. There was no effect on liver swelling or bile flow when DFO was only added to the CS medium.DFO added during WI and perfusion decreased liver perfusion injury aggravated by extended CS.

Health-care organizations are now moving toward integrated delivery systems to provide high-quality care, as they are being held to an ever-increasing scope of accountabilities. This paper introduces developing status of telemedicine. Telemedicine is based on the technology of telecommunication, and it is one of the application of computer supported cooperative work (CSCW). Computer supported teleconferencing applications have been developed in the field of CSCW and are currently providing more effective support for telemedicine services. This can be achieved by a combination of high performance networks and reduce data transmissions during the conference. A scheme of telemedicine system is proposed. The present paper describes methods for the design of computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) procedures suitable for the medical application area and specifically for the purpose of medical teleconsultation and remote diagnosis support.
