Research purpose. Through the adoption of the concept of the Proof of Concept, the main objective of this work is to highlight the approach that allows the framework and study of the viability of investments in the digital transformation of companies. The research focuses on the publishing sector and, mainly, on one of the largest publishing groups in Portugal and focuses on the strategic decision, due to the covid-19 pandemic situation, to adopt a Warehouse Management System to increase productivity, competitiveness, and sustainability of the company under study. Due to the need for confinement, publishers saw their sales drop drastically and the option of e-commerce implied the need for adjustments in the organizational dynamics associated with the distribution of products. The research/paper goal is to show the viability of investments in the digital transformation of companies in order to enlarge their efficiency and effectiveness. Design / Methodology / Approach. As a methodology adopted in the first phase, the authors developed a framework of current challenges through the focus group technique. In the second phase, the authors conducted semi-structured interviews with the different managers of the group’s various companies and their departments. These methodological options aim to obtain more specific information on facts, the degree of relevance, validity, and reliability that is analyzed from the perspective of collecting information. Both methods provide elasticity in the approach and depth of the intended analysis, favoring spontaneous responses and the creation of openness to the approach of more complex and delicate topics. Findings. Information technology investments do not automatically bring competitive advantages. It is essential to carry out careful management of the project and carefully analyze the economic and financial viability of the investment. The disruptive changes do not allow errors in investment. So, adopting a methodology that integrates the strategic analysis of the challenges and technical analysis of the assets and respective viability seems critical for the success of digital transformation projects, namely in the publishing sector. Originality / Value / Practical implications. The digital transformation of companies is a current reality. The pandemic has highlighted digital as a factor of sustainability. However, this finding requires the preparation of management and the adoption of appropriate models and instruments. The present work presents a model that organizations can adapt to in a changing context.

The increasingly competitive industrial competition makes companies from all sectors around the world change the system to be more efficient and effective. One of the efforts to improve the company is by implementing a Warehouse Management System (WMS). Lately, many large companies are implementing Auto-ID (automatic identification) technology to solve existing problems. The types of Auto-ID technology that are often used are barcode, RFID and QR code technology. PT AKG is a manufacturing company that produces and markets plastic finished materials to serve the needs of other companies has not yet implemented WMS, this causes human error due to the process still manual. This research proposed to find the best warehouse management system using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method for PT. AKG. Alternative systems in this study are barcode, RFID, and QR code with the criteria used are cost, fuctionality, performance, and sustainability. Based on the results, the system chosen is the QR code with a score of 0.578084. QR codes can make it easier for operators and PPIC department staff to take notes and minimize recording errors. Recording that originally used Microsoft Excel and paper as a tool is no longer needed because operators only need to scan using a smartphone that is connected to the company's warehouse management system.

In this article, we describe the use of dynamic simulation when designing an effective system for order picking within a distribution warehouse. The simulation model was created in the Witness software environment for discrete dynamic simulation and is a modification of a general simulation model of material flows in supplier systems. Using the example of a batch system for picking orders in a drugstore goods warehouse, we discuss the possibilities of using a general simulation model of material flows as an effective framework for the development of system support for warehouse processes using warehouse management system (WMS). The simulation model is based on the possibility of distributing any material flow in the supply system into a finite number of movements with the possibility of using one of the sources and fulfilment of certain conditions. In order to achieve the required optimisation of the order picking system, which depends, in particular, on the unknown duration of goods collection at the picking location, and on the duration of goods sorting in consolidation, the “what-if” analysis has been used as a tool to measure the impact of uncertainty of one or more variables entering the model on the uncertainty of output variables. The study showed that minimisation of the number of physical elements in the model leads to a significantly higher speed of its operation. By means of dynamic simulation, it is possible to test a large number of variants of the picking system layout in a relatively short time and minimise the risk of erroneous decisions associated with the implementation of a suitable WMS.

With the hot rise and increasing popularity of e-commerce and online shopping, exponentially growing orders require to be picked up timely. In the order-based warehouse picking process, more intelligent optimization methods are urgently demanded to meet the maturity of robot technology. Due to the wide variety of SKUs (stock-keeping units) in warehouses, direct analysis based on orders can hardly get strong correlations among SKUs. Since orders and SKUs usually are presented in text form files, this paper proposes a clustering optimization algorithm based on text information granules which makes full use of context information and semantics. Storage assignment is determined by clustering SKUs first and then performing correlation analysis on the clustering results according to orders. The algorithm can give the semantic description of each cluster so that the clustering process is interpretable and transparent. Extensive experiments on a distribution center of a clothing production enterprise indicate 40.5 to 57.9% improvement in the average order picking distance compared with the ABC classification.

With technology advancement, the application of technology in conglomerate companies is crucial for company performance.Technology utilization in industry in developing countries is a challenge. Often there is a crisis of equipment, goods, and items destruction or loss in warehouses. The enhancement of the warehouse management system for the company helps to utilize resources effectively, thus improving company performance.This study aimed to enhance the management of warehouses through the use of information communication and technology. The study developed mobile applications for customer registration, order management, and stock management. The study also extended the web applications for account management, order management, invoice generation, client registration, and stock management. The study was conducted at AtoZ Textiles Company Limited located in the Kisongo area, Arusha Region.

Taking enterprise C as an example, the paper proposes to organically combine EPC Internet of Things with wireless sensor network WSN technology in response to various problems in existing warehouse management, and apply it to warehouse management to build an intelligent logistics warehouse management system. The paper designs and demonstrates the system scheme, and conducts a forward-looking research on the application of the Internet of Things in the logistics warehousing system. Through research and analysis, it is found that the Internet of Things can improve the efficiency of the logistics warehousing system and meet the requirements of cargo management, environmental monitoring and data transmission.

Dynamic model of the automated warehouse management and forecasting system in the conditions of Industry 4.0 is discussed. Usage of inductive knowledge base allows to predict the appearance of bottlenecks in advance and actually turns the warehouse management system into an expert with all the necessary integral experience, which helps to reduce significantly the financial costs of excessive inventory and to prevent certain components shortage possibility.

Virtual reality (VR) has evolved into a trending technology that has proven its worth in various application domains. VR is especially helpful for the training of complex tasks in special environments. In the area of logistics, warehouse management involves a complex workflow that consists of different order picking activities. Due to this complex workflow, stock discrepancies and misplaced wares are typical problems that often occur. To overcome this problem, we have developed a VR training application that integrates an existing warehouse management system and trains typical order picking processes. In our VR training demo, we simulate a real warehouse that is supplied with real stocks and real orders.

This paper describes the software architecture and the required hardware components of a Remote Warehouse Management System using Augmented Reality, designed in the context of the project called WMS & AR project. The system architecture will augment the capabilities of an existing WMS system [1]. The main services that the extended system will provide are (a) automatic recording of the layout of the warehouse; (b) automatic measurement of goods; (c) exception handling. Moreover, the paper discusses the architectural requirements of the system, presents the proposed software architecture and refers to the future steps.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has improved the operational efficiency and process flow in the distribution of warehouse management system (WMS) around the globe. Nonetheless, a moving or missing tag as well as known and unknown tag’s location that may occur in the detection could reduce the efficiency of process flow. This study aims at identifying the location of goods in between two RFID reading zones by means of machine learning, particularly Support Vector Machine (SVM). A total of seven statistical features are extracted from the received signal strength (RSS) value from the raw RFID readings. SVM classifier are evaluated by considering the combination of different statistical features namely COMBINE to produce a more effective classification in comparison to individual statistical feature. The performance of the classifier demonstrated a classification accuracy of approximately 94% by considering all features whereas the performance of the classifier by considering individual features alone is below than 90%. This preliminary study establishes the applicability of the proposed automatic identification is able to provide the management of goods as well as supply chain reasonably well without human intervention.

Retail business has evolved rapidly from e-commerce to adopting an Omni-channel business model. In order to sustain and flourish, the retailer is compelled to adopt a customer-centric supply chain approach, which is a catalyst to streamlining the return management process being a strategic priority. The process of managing the return of goods (Reverse logistics) is critical for the company, yet the most undermanaged business function. From the operational process, prospective warehouse management and 3PL (third party logistics party) play a crucial role in managing RL (Reverse Logistics) process. In the entire process, the WMS (Warehouse management system) is the core system managing the storage of incoming goods, and the system itself should be interface and collaborate. However, practically, the return management process lacks system integration with the collaborative partners leading to delay, high inventory, and low customer satisfaction. The research aims to analyze the current challenges in the reverse logistics (RL) management and suggest a conceptual framework to integrate the WMS by adopting technologies like - IoT and RFID to provide seamless visibility, monitoring, and control across the supply chain.

In this paper, the management of distributed storage cloud model is discussed, and a variety of automation, intelligence and information technology are utilized to effectively integrate the resources effectively. The author studies the resource scheduling optimization problem in the system, proposes an effective scheduling method, and initially realizes the intelligent warehouse management system based on cloud model, which provides users with a good package management service.

We address an important problem of automation in simulation modeling of logistics warehouses. An effective solution for such a large-scale problem is difficult to obtain without high-performance computing. To this end, we propose a new approach for adjusting management system parameters of the warehouse in its production use. It is based on the integration of conceptual, wireframe, and service-oriented programming used to develop parameter sweep applications and data analysis in simulation modeling in heterogeneous distributed computing environments. We design a toolkit to support modeling of warehouse logistics. Using this toolkit, we develop a parameter sweep application and solve three optimization tasks for adjusting parameters of a warehouse management system. The practical experiments are focused on the refrigerated warehouse. The developed applications demonstrate high efficiency and scalability capabilities to optimize nine criteria to cope with different production demands.

From information revolution to ubiquitous revolution, IT (information technology) has prospered influencing the life of human and general industries. The transition from production management system in the early days to SCM today in logistics is mostly attributed to IT. In terms of WMS, from the initial production management system to the current system, massive amounts of IT have been applied to its use. Hence, this thesis presents a new type of logistics tracking and inventory management system that is able to track back the location of each commodity applying IoT (Internet of Things), known to be a current trend of IT, to utilize location-based information. The presented system also has capability to supervise the condition of commodity and real-time cargo shifting, applying environmental information gathered in inventory.

International audience; A communicating object, or connected object, is a key element of the Internet of Things to shift a perceptible real world into a wide digital virtual world known as the cyber-physical system. Knowing that sustainability, safety, and logistic issues are among the significant goals and challenges of modern industrial enterprises, the communicating object can be a rele- vant concept to guarantee safety performance in logistics and warehouse management. This article presents the impacts and advantages of the communicating object in smart logistics and the design of a communicating object model inspired from Internet of Things European research projects, which controls and monitors safety risks in a hazardous and chemi- cal industrial context. Generic safety-based scenarios are presented, which rely on a set of negotiated interaction mechanisms for storage and picking. The relevant deployment of intelligence in a warehouse management system leads to propose a new concept called ‘‘IoT-controlled Safe Area.’’ Our contribution is to bring informational, communica- tional, and decisional capabilities close to the warehousing physical world thanks to the communicating object. This enables achieving safety assurance with a decrease in the decision-making delay and an increase in the solving efficiency of local and dynamic disruptions, while avoiding inherent shortcomings of the warehouse management system centraliza- tion. For this, an industrial implementation is presented.

Background The supply of health products is a major activity for hospital pharmacists. Its complexity is based on the need to hold sufficient stock at a reasonable cost while avoiding overstocking of products and therefore money. In our institution, various systems were established to prevent expired medicines such as automated drugs distribution systems with distribution according to the best before date or the first-in first-out principle managed by a warehouse management system. Nevertheless, some drugs and medical devices expire each month. Purpose The aim of this work has been to identify the factors responsible for the lapse in order to optimize inventory management. Material and methods From May 2016 to July 2018, we had identified the products (name, quantity, price) removed from the stock due to lapsing in our hospital pharmacy. For each of them, we had researched the reason for expiration, and we have proposed a solution to optimize stock management. Results Three-hundred and thirty products have been thrown away, which have represented €1 70 149 (€1 44 761 excluding refunds by suppliers). The causes encountered have been: no regular consumption (90 products; 8% of expenses); termination of use (79; 31%); products returned from services (39; 2%); emergency drugs such as antidotes (39; 27%); inadequate management of stocks (36; 8%); and other causes (47; 24%). The two main corrective actions have been procurement inactivation (30% of cases) and decrease in security threshold (28%). For 28% of the products, particularly pharmaceutical preparations and emergency drugs, ordering recommendations have been maintained. Conclusion The cessation of needs represents the main item of expenditure, but one product is responsible for half of this cost (24 units at €1100 each). The amount of expenditure is probably underestimated because the price of pharmaceutical preparations (28 cases) was not charged. Having optimised the settings seems to be efficient because there is no lapse redundancy except for the little-used products for which a minimal stock must be maintained. Optimising the stock is a long term-job which requires the contribution of several stakeholders such as buyer pharmacists, supply and logistic responsible and consumers. Distribution companies use complex software systems called WMS (Warehouse Management System). The WMS is an important part of the company’s business and it can make processes simple to keep track of. Smart WMS optimizes processes to save resources and to create a more efficient working place. This paper describes the concept of a smart WMS that is implemented in one of the largest distribution companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The system uses artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms to improve working process. The paper describes the complete warehouse workflow that includes stock planning, initial product placement, transfer from stock to pick zone, order picking process, transport and tracking. The anomaly detection is used in some processes to improve the whole system. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of an efficient and in the real world used smart WMS concept.

This study aims to explore the significant benefits gained from the implementation of the Warehouse Management System in 3rd Party Logistics Service Provider. A qualitative research approach been adopted by conducting an in-depth case study in one of Halal third-party logistics (3PLs) company located in central Malaysia, offering most of the logistics services, including transportation and warehousing. Information obtained from the warehouse operations managers in understanding the overall benefit of the warehouse management system. As a result of the highly competitive in 3rd party logistics market, environment companies are continuously forced to improve their warehousing operations into a system based applications. Many 3rd party logistics companies have also customized their value proposition to meet better customer demands, which has led to changes in the role of warehouses. The findings of this study have significant implications for both academicians and the 3PLs organizations to further explore the theories, practices, and the implementation of the Warehouse Management System in the warehouse operations. The future studies may lead to an investigation of the relationship of the warehouse management system with 3PL business competitiveness among the 3PL’s organization.

As a real time location system (RTLS) can provide positioning and tracking of forklifts and other mobile entities in a warehouse, the integration of RTLS into a data system has a significant potential to enhance safety and improve efficiency. The objective of this research is to demonstrate how RTLS technology can be leveraged to enhance the warehouse safety and operational efficiency via a real warehouse case study. The research is implemented using a novel three-phase framework to introduce the RTLS technology in the warehouse. The first phase evaluates available RTLS technologies. Market research has been conducted to compare different RTLS technologies, and the outcome of this phase suggests that the ultra-wide band (UWB) is the best technology for indoor positioning and tracking in the warehouse with respect to several metrics. The second phase is the technology implementation, which aims to integrate RTLS with other existing warehouse operation systems, i.e., the warehouse management system (WMS) and the forklift fleet management system (FFMS). In this phase, light is shed on current challenges and proposed solutions of RTLS data accuracy and synchronization. The final phase is post-implementation, in which several methods and data visualization tools are proposed to tackle safety and operational issues. A real warehouse in the US has been used as a case study to evaluate the proposed framework. In particular, the following analyses have been conducted using the actual RTLS data: (1) harshness in braking, (2) compliance to routing policies, (3) driver patterns in intersections, (4) congestion identification and prevention, (5) speed per zone, (6) impact analysis, and (7) faults analysis. The results suggest that the proposed framework has a great potential to advance the current warehouse solutions one step forward to realize smart warehouse operations.

A core activity for achieving an efficient order fulfillment planning in the business-to-consumer (B2C) context is the inventory rationing. This activity is complex and vital once e-tailers must deal with high frequency orders, timely delivery needs, and frequent stock outs, having to employ other fulfillment alternatives such as dropshipping. Particularly, it becomes much more complex when supply disruptions occur. When some eventualities like the malfunctioning of the warehouse management system, a road blockage or a disaster occurs in an unexpected way e-tailers or supplier inventory can result damaged and the access to some geographic areas can be compromised, making hard to manage the inventory. As a consequence, some clients are hampered of receiving their products at the expected time, quantity or quality. This paper puts forward a framework for order fulfillment planning in e-tail stores, based on an inventory rationing model that splits the demand in a partial drop-shipping system. The model does consider the effects of supply disruption, filling the gap of existing models that do not include the respective constraints. Moreover, it reserves the more profitable and lesser inventory-consuming orders for the e-tailer, enabling him to diminish the consequences of the supply disruptions and achieve a profitable and service-oriented fulfillment operation.

With the development of electric power enterprises, the types and quantity of storage management materials are also increasing. With the rapid increase of warehousing frequency, warehousing management is very complex and diversified. The traditional manual warehouse operation mode has been difficult to meet the rapid storage management, which will seriously affect the operation efficiency of enterprises. By improving the intelligent warehouse management system, we must use RFID application technology, visualization technology, etc., which will improve the efficiency of material management. By reducing the cost of material management, we will achieve the optimal management of warehouse materials. Firstly, this paper analyzes the development trend of storage management and RFID technology. Then, the whole idea of system design is established.

Building a successful warehouse management system encompasses solving many problems of different nature to reshape the general workflow and ensure improvements in terms of resource management. In order for such a system to be accepted and used by a logistics company, those solutions need to be presented through a simple, adaptable and most importantly, a feasible software solution. One of the aspects that needs to be covered while building a warehouse management system is the optimal product placement in the warehouse. If the products are strategically placed, all the other improvement strategies like stock to picking zone item transfer and item picking order become more efficient and easier to implement. In this paper, tactics and issues regarding the optimal product placement in a warehouse are analyzed in detail through a real-world case study. Solutions of this problem largely differ for new, empty warehouses and for already operative warehouses not able to carry out a stocktaking process. Approaches for both possible situations are proposed and tested out on two different warehouses in a medium-to-large logistics company.

Resumo A eficiência nas operações logísticas torna as empresas mais competitivas. Nesse aspecto, o uso de ferramentas para o gerenciamento e controle dessas operações é essencial para uma logística ágil e eficiente. O Sistema de Gestão de Armazém (Warehouse Management System , WMS) é uma das alternativas disponíveis no mercado capaz de automatizar as operações logísticas, buscando maior eficiência. A partir desse contexto, este estudo tem como objetivo central observar o processo de implantação de um Sistema de Gestão de Armazém em uma empresa de componentes mecânicos e analisar os impactos nas operações logísticas em termos de eficiência e qualidade de trabalho. Os resultados deste estudo estão focados na satisfação dos envolvidos, avaliada por meio de entrevistas, e nos resultados operacionais, fazendo-se um comparativo dos indicadores de desempenho logísticos em dois momentos distintos: o período anterior e o posterior à implantação do WMS. A partir da análise dos indicadores, foi possível observar um ganho de agilidade nas operações logísticas que, consequentemente, reflete-se em ganhos financeiros. Além disso, os relatos dos colaboradores envolvidos na mudança revelaram diminuição de atritos e aumento expressivo da confiabilidade e da credibilidade depositada nas informações por parte de clientes internos e externos. Abstract The companies may gain competitive advantage when they have an efficient logistics. In this aspect, the use of tools for the management and control of material handling and storage are essential for a fast and efficient logistics. The Warehouse Management System (WMS) is one available alternative for the automation of the logistic operations. In this context, this study has the central objective of analyzing the results of the implementation of a WMS system in a manufacturer of mechanical parts, in terms of operational efficiency and quality. The results of this study are focused on the satisfaction of the workers involved with the logistic operations, evaluated by means of interviews, and on the operational results, evaluated by means of a comparative analysis of the logistic performance indicators at two different times, the time before and the time after the implementation of the WMS. The analysis of the performance indicators demonstrated that the logistic operations have become more agile, what has reflected on financial gains. In addition, the workers involved with the change have reported a decrease in the functional conflicts and an increase in the reliability and credibility of information available to internal and external customers.

Aiming at the low degree of automation in production enterprises, real-time tracking and automatic access to warehouses are realized by developing warehouse management software. The paper first analyzes the system requirements, and then gives the overall design plan, through C#, MySQL and TCP. IP communication protocol, compiled a set of warehouse management system software. The actual application shows that the automation level and management efficiency of production enterprises are improved.

In rapidly growing e-commerce businesses, searching purchased items in the warehouse and delivering them within a very short time becomes a crucial problem. In order to solve this problem, we propose a complete RFID based goods locator system which consists of specially designed RFID reader and an integrated cloud based Warehouse Management System (WMS). The RFID reader is able to detect and sense the distance to the location of the purchased item which is attached with a RFID tag based on its RSSI information. The RFID reader is connected with the WMS application installed in a smartphone, through a Bluetooth connection. To update the inventory item information in real time, the Android based WMS application is connected to cloud based logistic and commerce database. Hence, by using this system, the time needed to search the purchased item and track the item delivery status can be shortened. As the result, it increases the efficiency of WMS system.

This treatise is a study on the effectiveness of logistics tasks through the Warehouse Management System. Using manufacturer `D` company`s logistics operation as an example, we compared before and after cases, in which WMS was used. Upon using WMS, we observed the processes and researched how much the logistics company`s performance was affected by the process changes influencing profits.

This study has been done to create a system and standard to control the warehouse and also make it easier to find tools. The warehouse is full and finding tools is difficult because there is no regulation to control how the warehouse works. This research uses direct observation in the field, and interviews with the department related to supporting tool warehouses. The results of the observations is the organization of a new management system in the form of Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), rules, and a new layout for tools. Based on the existing SOP, stock cards and material, a parent table is made for controlling tools in the warehouse. Controlling is carried out with aim that the warehouse works according to its SOP and eliminates current problems.

The paper designed an RFID-based warehouse management system for fresh agricultural products of stores. The problem for fresh agricultural products in traditional warehouse business processes is first analyzed. Then according to the results of business processes analysis, system function and database are designed, and the system function includes 4 parts, inbound management, outbound management, electronic goods allocation management and processes management in the warehouse management. The expected results when the system is achieved can enhance the working efficiency of stores, reduce operating costs and improve customer satisfaction.

The automotive industry is one of the most competitive sectors, in which rigour, flexibility, quality and agility constitute the critical factors of success. Warehouse activities and their associated costs play a vital role in logistic functions. Their optimisation and performance assessment may result in substantial value gains for the company. This study was developed at Continental Mabor, with the purpose of developing a proposal to restructure and optimise the company’s warehouse. An analysis of the existing warehouse was carried out and the respective proposals were subsequently presented. The main goal of these proposals was to improve the efficiency of warehouse functions, reduce stock quantities and enhance the capacity to meet customer’s demand. A warehouse management system (WMS) was installed and a suitable bin management solution was defined. This system consisted of a basic WMS to support stock inventory and its location. In addition, this system envisaged warehouse performance and included elements such as the inventory management Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and warehouse productivity.

This paper suggests a specific model that could efficiently improve the interaction and the interface between WMS(Warehouse Management System) terminal and PDA terminal through real time processing in manufacturing shop. The proposed model shows that the new method can more efficiently perform to reduce processing time for shipping and receiving, compared with the current approach. As a result of the certain test among the main server, WMS system, and PDA terminal, it is noted in case of the new proposed system that the effects of proposed model are as follows: (a) While the receiving lead time for carrying by the current method was 2 hours, the receiving lead time by the new method was 20 minutes. (b) While the shipping lead time for carrying by the current method was 1 hours, the shipping lead time by the new method was 15 minutes. (c) While the inventory rate of accuracy by the current method was 85%, the inventory rate of accuracy by the new method was 98%.

Therefore, in this paper, we propose a WiMedia MAC based RFID cooperative relay transmission scheme for warehouse management system applications.

This will have a good prospects in railway package management. On the basis of the RFID technology and the proposed problems, a well-performed Railway Package Information Management Platform is proposed. This platform can provide fast, high efficient, intelligent, safe and stable solutions. The Platform consists of five systems, which are handhold terminal system, sorting system, warehouse management system, tracking system and Railway Package information management system respectively. Implementation on the platform shows that it not only reduces package transportation cycle, but it also improves the stability and safety for the logistics management system. Multiple verification demonstrates that the proposed platform has a very good practicality.

In order to realize completely automatic and wireless management, this paper introduces ZigBee into warehouse management according to the practical situation. It gives a brief account of the basic functions of smart warehouse management system and makes an overall design of the SWMS based on ZigBee. It also verifies its feasibility by testing the performance of the actual system.

This document explains the redesigned Warehouse Automation System based on ZigBee & RFID according to the research of present situation of warehouse workflow and management system. Based on the new design, we have succeeded to locate and manage the goods area using the ZigBee, propose a solution that using forklift as a carrier to realize "Offline Goods-Placement Management", so as to improve the accuracy and flexibility of goods management. This study resolves the following research problems: (1) Redesign the overall system workflow. (2) Describe the automation system functions and advantage. This Warehouse Automation System can effectively make up for many shortcomings of the previous warehouse management system and improve the efficiency of warehouse management.

By employing sensor technology, control and network communication technology, we develop an intelligent instrument warehouse management system (IWMS) oriented to a typical instrument warehouse in power industry. We develop, test and improve the control hardware module, the instrument status indication module and the related software program. We also make the operational processes, provide a visual and intuitive operator interface, and realize and optimize the functions such as account management, query, breakdown alert and repair report. The implementation in Dongguan Power Supply Bureau reveals that IWMS optimizes the check-in and check-out process for the instruments, shortens the registration time, achieves the goal of automatic statistics, and improves the efficiency for instrument management and the operation productivity.

The article deals with the monitoring of the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and of the efficiency of the stock processes. Another areas described in the article are some aspects of the modern stock management by using the Warehouse Management System (WMS) with orientation on the reception of goods and picking of goods processes. In the area of the reception of goods, the article deals with the utilization of the Electronic Data Interchange for the Despatch Advice (EDI DESADV) in combination with the exploitation of the Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) during the goods reception. The picking of goods process is supported by the voice technology for picking of goods.
