- Abstract
This study examined next generation business officers' (NGBOs) perceptions of their readiness for assuming the chief business officer role (CBO). Originally created in 1920, the CBO role has changed over the decades in response to changes in the higher education landscape. Once thought of as the person in the back office keeping the books, the CBO has emerged as a collaborative leader and partner on campus, providing critical business, strategic, and administrative support. At the same time, when there is a need for CBOs who can offer sound and ethical business judgement, many CBOs are planning to retire. Consequently, it is imperative that there be a pipeline of NGBOs prepared to step into the CBO role when needed. This mixed methods study surveyed NGBOs about their perceptions of the importance of higher education leadership competencies for the CBO role, using the HELC inventory. The study then examined if there were differences in the responses to the survey questions between groups of NGBOs who held different roles in the Business Office. These groups are assistant/associate vice presidents (AVP), controllers, budget directors, and other NGBOs. Once the results of the survey were collected and analyzed, the researcher conducted interviews to identify what ways NGBOs developed their competencies and what professional development experiences they believe they still need to prepare themselves for the CBO role. Results of this study can be used threefold, by NGBOs, their managing CBOs, and higher education professional development organizations, as they plan for professional development.
