Abstract Logistics theory suggests that transportation and inventory policies are jointly considered by managers because these costs have offsetting properties. For example, when inventory is ordered less frequently, total transportation [...]

Given that the impact of retail shelf facings and price on a product's market share is of substantial interest to marketing managers in the retail supply chain, we examine whether these relationships may be interdependent with the firm's supply chain activities. We offer predictions regarding the interdependence of the marketing and supply chain variables using monthly in-store observations from 62 different retail stores from five different chains, taken over a 24-month period. The in-store observations included price and number of facings, which is combined with data obtained from the manufacturer on case pack quantity and market share data from the ACNielsen HomeScan consumer scanner panel. Results indicate that shelf facings impact the effects of price and case pack quantity on market share. In addition, we explore the strength of relationships across retailers employing everyday low price versus HiLo pricing strategies. Generally, our findings suggest that retailers and suppliers must work to integrate marketing activities and supply chain processes both within and across firms to most effectively serve the consumer at the retail shelf and increase market share. Keywords Retail shelf space * Case pack quantity * Retail market share * Supply chain management, In considering the interrelationship between retail supply chain management and consumer packaged goods (CPG) marketing, a crucial point of interface between retailer and consumer is the retail point-of-purchase. Total quality management -- Research ,Business ,Business, general - Abstract
A comparison was made of total quality management (TQM) strategies to identify common factors among these strategies. Surveys of TQM literature found that 12 constructs were common to all TQM strategies and these included customer focus, design quality management, benchmarking, statistical process control usage and employee empowerment. A survey of corporations confirmed the use of these constructs in their implementation of TQM.

A study of 248 purchasing managers in the fabricated metal products industry seeks to determine the relationship between the managers' idea of product quality and what they believe as their customers' idea of their product quality. Results indicate a positive correlation and a statistically significant relationship. Specifically, the purchasing managers trust that an improved product manufactured by their companies is also considered as such by their customers. This finding is vital in ensuring management support for total quality management methods.

Trucking -- Labor relations ,Labor unions -- Elections ,Business ,Business, international ,Transportation industry - Abstract
This empirical study examines factors affecting the outcomes of union certification elections in trucking during the period October 1985 - September 1992. Results show that unions are significantly more likely to win elections when there is more than one union competing for certification. Unions are significantly more likely to lose elections when employees' only choice is the Teamsters. Bargaining unit size, voter turnout, and procedural delay have significant, negative, impacts on the probability of a union victory. The State's public policy regarding unions was also found to influence election outcomes. Implications for trucking managers and union organizers are discussed. Introduction A recent study indicated that one of the greatest concerns executives of motor carriers have about the second half of this decade is uncertainty about labor costs (Cullen [...]

Logistics research has been successful in building a plethora of theory through the use of techniques such as analytical and conceptual models, case studies, and nonscientific inductive interpretations of empirical observation. The authors propose an increased application of scientific survey research as a means of more rigorously scrutinizing the 'axioms' of logistics as well as providing clarity and dependability to the constructs common to logistics research. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.), I. Introduction Logistics is a relatively new field of academic study. As it emerges, the research requirements and opportunities change. A study was conducted to evaluate the development of incentives for firms to invest in product flexibility. The study considers a game theoretic model and focuses on the cost firms must incur to manufacture such a product. Uncertainty and the strategic interaction of firms were also considered for the analysis. Results show that firms should exert more effort in producing flexible products when the probability of raising the ratio of price to variable cost is high.

Statins effectively lower LDL cholesterol levels in large studies and the observed interindividual response variability may be partially explained by genetic variation. Here we perform a pharmacogenetic meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in studies addressing the LDL cholesterol response to statins, including up to 18,596 statin-treated subjects. We validate the most promising signals in a further 22,318 statin recipients and identify two loci, SORT1/CELSR2/PSRC1 and SLCO1B1, not previously identified in GWAS. Moreover, we confirm the previously described associations with APOE and LPA. Our findings advance the understanding of the pharmacogenetic architecture of statin response., Statins are effectively used to prevent and manage cardiovascular disease, but patient response to these drugs is highly variable. Here, the authors identify two new genes associated with the response of LDL cholesterol to statins and advance our understanding of the genetic basis of drug response.

The impact of a major logistics and distribution variable, namely case pack quantity, on the performance of a consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturing firm is investigated. Evidence indicates that case pack quantity has a substantial impact on market retail share, based on the store-level fill rate and product rate-of-sale (ROS).

Analytical modeling is used to develop an expression for the standard deviation of demand during the protection period, and also an expression for the amount of order variance amplification induced by a stochastic review interval in inventory control. Results reveal that a variable review interval has a similar impact to a variable lead time on the variance of demand over the protection period, but produces a different effect on demand variance amplification within the supply chain.

Epidemiological and genetic data support the notion that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share genetic risk factors. In our previous genome-wide association study, meta-analysis and follow-up (totaling as many as 18 206 cases and 42 536 controls), we identified four loci showing genome-wide significant association with schizophrenia. Here we consider a mixed schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (psychosis) phenotype (addition of 7469 bipolar disorder cases, 1535 schizophrenia cases, 333 other psychosis cases, 808 unaffected family members and 46 160 controls). Combined analysis reveals a novel variant at 16p11.2 showing genome-wide significant association (rs4583255[T]; odds ratio=1.08; P=6.6 × 10(-11)). The new variant is located within a 593-kb region that substantially increases risk of psychosis when duplicated. In line with the association of the duplication with reduced body mass index (BMI), rs4583255[T] is also associated with lower BMI (P=0.0039 in the public GIANT consortium data set; P=0.00047 in 22 651 additional Icelanders). Glaucoma is characterized by irreversible optic nerve degeneration and is the most frequent cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Here, the International Glaucoma Genetics Consortium conducts a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of vertical cup-disc ratio (VCDR), an important disease-related optic nerve parameter. In 21,094 individuals of European ancestry and 6,784 individuals of Asian ancestry, we identify 10 new loci associated with variation in VCDR. In a separate risk-score analysis of five case-control studies, Caucasians in the highest quintile have a 2.5-fold increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma as compared with those in the lowest quintile. This study has more than doubled the known loci associated with optic disc cupping and will allow greater understanding of mechanisms involved in this common blinding condition., Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Here, the authors carry out a large meta-analysis of genetic data from individuals of European and Asian ancestry and identify 10 new loci associated with vertical cup-disc ratio, a key factor in the clinical assessment of patients with glaucoma.

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture is to amend a bill that could cut the funding for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to discuss concerns on questionable Chinese agricultural exports. Cooperation with Chinese regulators is recommended to address consumer protection and food safety issues.
