The ongoing problem of inconsistency in the stages of system development encourages the development and elaboration of approaches and methods aimed at eliminating the causes of their occurrence. According to the research community, one of the most promising approaches is to involve users in the development process. Six directions in the implementation of the approach to user involvement in the system development process were formed and analyzed in the article. The analysis of the applicability of such approaches and methods to the task of involving the user in the process of developing an information data model is carried out. The problems of this direction were highlighted. To solve these problems, the sensemaking approach principles which is a development of the methodology for sensemaking proposed by Brenda Dervin, are proposed to use. On the basis of the proposed sensemaking approach, the implementation of the proposed approach is shown with the help of the development of the method, a method for constructing the specification of the information model was developed. The steps of the method are represented by methods that implement the idea of involving the user in the development process by analyzing his work with elements of documentation support.

This article foregrounds the challenges and necessity of promoting user involvement in traditional sectors, especially those that constitute strong pillars for sustainable development. As a case in point, the emergence of precision agriculture technologies requires novel methods to integrate users in innovation processes. Accordingly, this article discusses three applications of journey maps developed in collaboration with users and other stakeholders in the context of agriculture. We illustrate how design-thinking tools such as journey maps offer the means to explore user experiences, spotting previously unknown needs or problems, generate value propositions with meaning and relevance, and foresee implementation issues not directly related to the technology in focus. This research, thus, contributes by first describing applications of journey maps which are relevant for traditional sectors that are undergoing disruption, and second, by highlighting the broader usefulness of such tools for facilitating coordination among the diverse actors who are ultimately central to innovation adoption and success.

Most multi-national organizations in Kenya are adopting an entire suite of enterprise resource planning Software and customize them to fit the business processes. Despite the continued review of the enterprise resource planning suite, the realization of a successful enterprise resource planning implementation for multi-national organizations is becoming difficult, owing to user involvement issues. This research, therefore, addressed this by assessing the effect of user involvement on enterprise resource planning implementation for multi-national organizations in Kenya. The study used a descriptive research design, where it obtained a sample size of 70 respondents and selected the respondents from 85 subjects using stratified proportionate sampling. The data for the study was gathered from primary sources using a questionnaire. Data was evaluated using quantitative analysis to provide descriptive statistics accompanied by inferential analysis to estimate the model. Guided by the study findings, it was concluded that; there is a positive and significant relationship between users’ functional requirements activities and enterprise resource planning implementation; users’ presentation requirement activities positively significantly influence enterprise resource planning implementation, users’ quality assurance activities has a significant moderate influence on its enterprise resource planning implementation, and users’ project management activities have a significant moderate influence on enterprise resource planning implementation. The study recommends that these organizations should; develop users’ functional requirements activities policy, review policies on business processes to accommodate different system implementation practices; review current quality assurance activities by consumers to satisfy the planned enterprise resource planning system demand of the provider, and acquire as well as retain the appropriate users’ project management.

Background While patient and public involvement (PPI) in clinical trials is beneficial and mandated by some funders, formal guidance on how to implement PPI is limited and challenges have been reported. We aimed to investigate how PPI is approached within a UK Clinical Trials Unit (CTU)’s portfolio of randomised controlled trials, perceived barriers to/facilitators of its successful implementation, and perspectives on the CTU’s role in PPI. Methods A mixed-methods study design, involving (1) an online survey of 26 trial managers (TMs) and (2) Interviews with Trial Management Group members and public contributors from 8 case-study trials. Quantitative survey data were summarised using descriptive statistics and interview transcripts analysed thematically. Two public contributors advised throughout and are co-authors. Results (1) 21 TMs completed the survey; (2) 19 in-depth interviews were conducted with public contributors (n=8), TMs (n=5), chief investigators (n=3), PPI coordinators (n=2) and a researcher. 15/21 TMs surveyed reported that a public contributor was on the trial team, and 5 used another PPI method. 12/21 TMs reported that public contributors were paid (range £10–50/h). 5 TMs reported that training was provided for public contributors and few staff members had received any formal PPI training. The most commonly reported tasks undertaken by public contributors were the review of participant-facing materials/study documents and advising on recruitment/retention strategies. Public contributors wanted and valued feedback on changes made due to their input, but it was not always provided. Barriers to successful PPI included recruitment challenges, group dynamics, maintaining professional boundaries, negative attitudes to PPI amongst some researchers, a lack of continuity of trial staff, and the academic environment. Successful PPI required early and explicit planning, sharing of power and ownership of the trial with public contributors, building and maintaining relationships, and joint understanding and clarity about expectations/roles. CTUs have an important role to play in supporting recruitment, signposting and coordinating PPI. Conclusions While highly valuable, PPI in trials is currently variable. PPI representatives are recruited informally, may not be provided with any training and are paid inconsistently across trials. Study findings can help optimise PPI in trials and ensure researchers and public contributors are adequately supported.

The purpose of this research is to find out the influence of user involvement, training and education, and top management support on the performance of accounting information systems. The sample taken in this study were 54 respondents who were employees of the Sentani Malang Oncology Hospital who used the accounting information system. The analysis technique used descriptive statistical analysis and PLS analysis using warpls7. The results of this study show: (1) There is a positive and significant direct influence between user involvement on the performance of the accounting information system, (2) There is a positive and significant direct influence between training and education on the performance of the accounting information system, (3) There is a positive and significant direct influence between top management support on the performance of the accounting information system.

Testing was carried out on a sample of 71 respondents. The sample method used was purposive sampling. data collection was carried out by direct survey. Fragmentation of social service and healthcare services has been given attention in many countries and a variety of strategies and models are used in attempts to remedy the problem. In a parallel development, demands have been made that users/patients should have more influence over their own care, and research has shown that user involvement can support the recovery process. This article focuses on how professionals view user involvement in collaborative efforts in care planning, using the Coordinated Individual Plan (CIP) in Sweden as an example. Since 2009, social service and healthcare agencies are required to draw up CIPs when they are judged to be needed, with the purpose of improving the care process. An additional purpose is to increase users' involvement in their own care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in 2019 with 20 professionals working within social service and healthcare agencies for people with mental health and/or substance abuse problems in the Stockholm region. Analysis was by qualitative content analysis. Findings show that professionals study experience ambivalence concerning user involvement in care planning. On the one hand, they support the user´s own demands of services and, on the other hand, they correct the user´s demands to fit the range of services and organisation of care. The user/patient's position is expressed as vulnerable, caught between caregivers who often safeguard their organisational duties and economical restrictions. These findings reflect the conflict predicted by Lipsky's theory of street-level bureaucracy. Professionals are expected to act as advocates for the user/patient, while at the same time exercising a controlling and gatekeeping function. The question is raised whether a model such as CIP provides sufficiently for factors which can counterbalance the power of the professionals relative to the user/patient in care planning.

This paper focuses on a fundamental question in Wi-Fi-based gesture recognition: "Can we use the knowledge learned from some users to perform gesture recognition for others?". This problem is also known as cross-target recognition. It arises in many practical deployments of Wi-Fi-based gesture recognition where it is prohibitively expensive to collect training data from every single user. We present CrossGR, a low-cost cross-target gesture recognition system. As a departure from existing approaches, CrossGR does not require prior knowledge (such as who is currently performing a gesture) of the target user. Instead, CrossGR employs a deep neural network to extract user-agnostic but gesture-related Wi-Fi signal characteristics to perform gesture recognition. To provide sufficient training data to build an effective deep learning model, CrossGR employs a generative adversarial network to automatically generate many synthetic training data from a small set of real-world examples collected from a small number of users. Such a strategy allows CrossGR to minimize the user involvement and the associated cost in collecting training examples for building an accurate gesture recognition system. We evaluate CrossGR by applying it to perform gesture recognition across 10 users and 15 gestures. Experimental results show that CrossGR achieves an accuracy of over 82.6% (up to 99.75%). We demonstrate that CrossGR delivers comparable recognition accuracy, but uses an order of magnitude less training samples collected from the end-users when compared to state-of-the-art recognition systems.

Background Despite intentions to increase user participation in the development of health services, the concept of participation and how it unfolds within studies with a participatory design has rarely been addressed. Objective The aim of this study was to describe how user participation manifests itself within a co-design process involving patients, significant others and health-care professionals, including potential enablers or barriers. Methods This study was conducted in the context of a co-design process of a new person-centred transition from a hospital to continued rehabilitation in the home involving three patients with stroke, one significant other and 11 professionals. Data were collected by observations during the workshops, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. Results Four categories: 'Composition of individuals for an adaptive climate'; 'The balancing of roles and power'; 'Different perspectives as common ground for a shared understanding'; and 'Facilitating an unpredictable and ever-adaptive process', with all together nine subcategories, resulted from the analysis. Participation varied between individuals, groups and steps within the process, and on the topic of discussions and the motivation to contribute. Discussion/conclusion Participation is not something that is realized by only applying participatory design methodology. Participation manifests itself through the interaction of the participants and their skills to handle different perspectives, roles and assignments. Participation is enabled by individual, group and facilitating aspects. Co-design processes should allow for varying levels of participation among the participants and throughout the process. Patient or public contribution Patients, significant others and health-care professionals participated as co-designers of a care transition model between hospital and home.

Design thinking is an emerging concept gaining much traction in practice and more recently in academic debate. While prior work has examined the characteristics and processes of design thinking, there is an absence of studies that attempt to measure the extent of its use and effectiveness in industry. This paper reports on the preliminary results of a study targeted at designers operating in dynamic project environments. The aim of this exploratory research is to identify who designers collaborate with, the extent to which users are involved in the design process in practice and the perceived importance of understanding the emotional needs of the user. The study also sought to ascertain whether user interaction is associated with performance. To do this, data was collected from 131 experienced designers in Ireland. Initial findings from this analysis are presented and discussed. This study answers calls for further work in a neglected but essential area and helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

This work presents SimBike, a virtual bicycle simulator that uses non-conventional motor, sensory and sensorimotor devices to provide greater user involvement and comfort. SimBike aims to recreate the activity of riding a bicycle by exploring possibilities of electronic devices, such as making curves with the handlebar or body-weight, pedaling, braking, among others. It also offers feedback commonly expected by the rider, such as wind sensation varying according to speed and the sensation of trepidation on uneven terrain. The simulator was evaluated with 16 users, obtaining positive results regarding user experience, comfort, and immersion. As future work, we propose to improve some features to adapt the simulator for all users, regardless of their weight and height.

Summary This article presents Scottish adult safeguarding as a case study to illuminate some challenges of building knowledge for policy and practice based on service user and carer voices. It draws on five of our own research projects that have evaluated implementation of Scottish adult safeguarding legislation and/or asked more exploratory questions about risk, safety and support. Findings We show how practical and ethical issues limited our more evaluative lines of inquiry. We then show how increasingly participative approaches led to studies that were more accessible and that connected more deeply with service users’ and carers' lives, but that also faced greater challenges in the translation of their findings back into the policy and/or practice environment. Applications We conclude with an argument for ongoing dialogue between policy-makers, professionals, service users and carers, researchers, educators and students about knowledge, its different forms and sources, its generation and its use.

BackgroundCoverage of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services has expanded rapidly but approaches to ensure service delivery is patient-centered have not always kept pace. To better understand how the inclusion of women living with HIV in a collective, quality improvement process could address persistent gaps, we adapted a social accountability approach, CARE’s Community Score Card© (CSC), to the PMTCT context. The CSC process generates perception-based score cards and facilitates regular quality improvement dialogues between service users and service providers.MethodsFifteen indicators were generated by PMTCT service users and providers as part of the CSC process. These indicators were scored by each population during three sequential cycles of the CSC process which culminates in a sharing of scores in a collective meeting followed by action planning. We aggregated these scores across facilities and analyzed the differences in first and last scorings to understand perceived improvements over the course of the project (z-test comparing the significance of two proportions; one-tailedp-value ≤ .05). Data were collected over 12 months from September 2017 to August 2018.ResultsFourteen of the fifteen indicators improved over the course of this project, with eight showing statistically significant improvement. Out of the indicators that showed statistically significant improvement, the majority fell within the control of local communities, local health facilities, or service providers (7 out of 8) and were related to patient or user experience and support from families and community members (6 out of 8). From first to last cycle, scores from service users’ and service providers’ perspectives converged. At the first scoring cycle, four indicators exhibited statistically significant differences (p-value ≤ .05) between service users and service providers. At the final cycle there were no statistically significant differences between the scores of these two groups.ConclusionsBy creating an opportunity for mothers living with HIV, health service providers, communities, and local government officials to jointly identify issues and implement solutions, the CSC contributed to improvements in the perceived quality of PMTCT services. The success of this model highlights the feasibility and importance of involving people living with HIV in quality improvement and assurance efforts.Trial registrationTrial registration: ClincalTrials.govNCT04372667retrospectively registered on May 1st 2020.

The involvement of health professionals in research may ensure the acquisition of relevant and sustainable knowledge that is applicable in practice. However, knowledge is lacking about how professionals experience being involved. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how health professionals experienced the process of being involved in a project related to research on ageing and health. Data was collected through seventeen interviews and analysed using a grounded theory approach. The findings illustrate the health professionals’ experiences of an adaptation process that occurred, e.g., adapting practice and research to facilitate collaboration and the ability to co-create. Influenced by circumstances and through ongoing negotiations and breakthroughs, co-creation was experienced, based on the health professionals’ and researchers’ trustful relationships. In conclusion, this new knowledge may be useful in designing and implementing future studies that involve health professionals in research projects on ageing and health.

This research was conducted to examine the effect of the technical ability of personal information systems, organizational size, user involvement in the system on the performance of accounting information systems. The population in this study includes all employees who use accounting information systems, namely tellers and back offices in conventional banks in the South Jakarta area. The sampling method used in this study is Simple Random Sampling. The final data generated are 48 samples that are ready to be analyzed and tested. The analysis technique used is multiple linear regression and uses the name of the SPPS statistical application with a significance level of 5%. The results of this study indicate that (1) the technical ability of personal information systems has a significant influence on the performance of accounting information systems, (2) the size of the organization has no significant effect on the performance of accounting information systems, (3) user involvement in the system has a significant influence on accounting performance information Systems.

This article presents human-centered design methods as a way to create relevant and vibrant libraries. Dokk1–the main library in Aarhus-is co-created with users, partners, and stakeholders. It has become an open, flexible library space that also uses technology as a way to invite the users to become part of the space. Using design thinking as a new way of working, co-creation also becomes a part of developing new services and spaces and a new way of working for the library staff.

Background: Guidelines for improving the quality of maternal health services emphasise women's involvement in care. However, evidence about migrant and ethnic minorities' preferences for participation in maternal care remains unsystematised. Understanding these populations' experiences with and preferred forms of involvement in care provision is crucial for imbuing policies and guidelines with sensitivity to diversity and for implementing people-centred care. This paper presents a narrative synthesis of empirical studies of involvement in maternal health care by migrants and ethnic minorities based on four key dimensions: information, communication, expression of preferences and decision-making. Methods: Studies indexed in PubMed and Scopus published until December 2019 were searched. Original quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies written in English and reporting on migrant and ethnic minority involvement in maternal care were included. Backward reference tracking was carried out. Three researchers conducted full-text review of selected publications. Results: In total, 22 studies met the inclusion criteria. The majority of studies were comparative and addressed only one or two dimensions of involvement, with an emphasis on the information and communication dimensions. Compared to natives, migrants and ethnic minorities were more likely to (1) lack access to adequate information as a result of health care staff's limited time, knowledge and misconceptions about women's needs and preferences; (2) report suboptimal communication with care staff caused by language barriers and inadequate interpreting services; (3) be offered fewer opportunities to express preferences and to have preferences be taken less into account; and (4) be less involved in decisions about their care due to difficulties in understanding information, socio-cultural beliefs and previous experiences with care provision less attuned with playing an active role in decision-making and care staff detracting attitudes. Conclusion: Constraints to adequate and inclusive involvement in maternal care can hinder access to quality care and result in severe negative health outcomes for migrant and ethnic minority women. More research is needed into how to tailor the dimensions of involvement to migrant and ethnic minorities' needs and preferences, followed by provision of the resources necessary for effective implementation (e.g. sufficient time for consultations, optimal interpreter systems, health care staff training). This study aims to determine the factors that influence the performance of SISKEUDES in improving the quality of the Village Fund's financial statements. Village financial management has become very important as part of the accountability of village funds given by the government and is increasing every year. The SISKEUDES application is used to facilitate the administration of village fund financial reports. The application of the SISKEUDES application will accelerate the completion of financial reports of village funds accurately and on time. The population in this study was all villages totaling 8 villages in Gianyar Regency who received village funds. The sample is determined by the saturated or census sample method. The data analysis technique uses Smart-PLS 3.0. The results showed that: user involvement had a positive and significant effect on the performance of the SISKEUDES; the education and training program has a negative and not significant effect on the performance of the SISKEUDES; top management support has a negative and significant effect on the performance of the SISKEUDES. This article critically examines user-involvement in the service delivery process for assistive activity technology.Data were collected in semi-structured interviews with 44 end users of assistive activity technology and in focus group interviews with 11 professionals at Norway's Assistive Technology Centre. Data was analysed according to a stepwise deductive-inductive approach.Flawed organisational principles like division of responsibility, unclear regulations, and a lack of competence with assistive activity technology among service professionals have hindered user involvement in the service delivery process.A missing knowledge of assistive activity technology among professionals and the current organisation of services creates barriers for a positive collaboration with users in the service delivery process of assistive activity technology.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe spread of information among users and courses for professionals should be expanded to ensure the necessary competence with assistive activity technology within the service delivery process.In developing the service delivery process for assistive activity technology, professionals should act less as guardians of traditional functional requirements and more as active providers of different technological solutions.The service delivery process for assistive activity technology should allow long-term testing to identify relevant social and physical factors affecting the use of this type of technology, before delivery.Guarantees and complaint systems should be established in the service delivery process for assistive activity technology.

Purpose Epilepsy is associated with costly unplanned health service use. The UK’s National Audits of Seizure Management in Hospital found use was often clinically unnecessary, avoidable and typically led to little benefit for epilepsy management. We systematically identified how services have responded to reduce such use. Methods We invited England’s ambulance services, neuroscience and neurology centres and a random sample of Emergency Departments (EDs) to complete a survey. It asked what innovations they (or services they worked with) had made in the past 5 years or were making, the priority afforded to them, user involvement, what comprised usual practice, and barriers to change. Results 72/87 of invited (82.8 %) services responded. EDs ascribed less priority to reducing emergency hospital use for epilepsy and convulsions, than other service types. Overall, 60 % of services reported a change(s) and/or were planning one. Neurology/neuroscience sites (93.8 %) were most likely to report change; EDs (15.4 %) least likely. Eleven types of change were identified; 5 sought to promote proactive epilepsy care and avert the need for emergency care; 3 focused on the care received from emergency services; and 3 focused on follow-up care ED attendees received. Most were for those with established, rather than new epilepsy and targeted known limitations to current care provision. Conclusion Reducing emergency hospital use by PWE is a high priority for most health services in England and a number of new services have been developed. However, they have not been consistently implemented and innovation is lacking in some areas of care.

Industrial research and development (R&D) is often adopted as a leading strategy for innovation in high-technology firms. It has been recognized that collaboration with external actors has become increasingly crucial for R&D practices in a world where product and service innovation are increasingly challenging for companies involved in knowledge-intensive technology areas. Thus, high-technology firms are increasingly engaging in collaborative relationships with external stakeholders to transfer valuable new knowledge for industrial purposes, or to create new knowledge through a joint learning process. These external stakeholders may include research institutes such as universities, customer firms, or end users of the firm's products or services. Academic involvement in industrial innovation projects has traditionally focussed on the early stages of a product's development process, when new ideas and innovations are being developed. On the other hand, the interaction between a firm and its customers takes place during the final stages of the R&D process, when innovations are brought to market. In this paper, we explore how users and customers can be involved in university-industry collaboration projects from the beginning of the product development process. Based on a case study comprising five long-term university-industry collaborations in Finland, this paper presents collaborative practices through which academic actors, users, and industrial customers may actively take part in the industrial innovation processes.

BackgroundIn light of the high prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults and the subsequent stigmatization and health consequences, there is a need to develop effective interventions to support lifestyle change. The literature supports the key role of healthcare professionals (HPs) in facilitating self-management through lifestyle interventions for those with chronic conditions. However, there is a lack of knowledge about how HPs practice self-management support (SMS) and user involvement for persons afflicted by overweight or obesity in lifestyle interventions in primary care Healthy Life Centres (HLC). The aim of this study was to explore how HPs provide SMS and what user involvement implies for HPs in HLCs.MethodsAn interpretative exploratory design, using qualitative thematic analysis of data from two focus group interviews with ten HPs from eight different HLCs, was conducted.ResultsThe analysis resulted in one overall theme; A partnership based on ethical awareness, non-judgemental attitude, dialogue and shared responsibility, comprising four interrelated themes: 1) Supporting self-efficacy, self-worth and dignity through an attitude of respect, acknowledgement and generosity, 2) Promoting self-belief and self-perceived health, 3) Collaborating and sharing responsibility, and 4) Being flexible, adjusting and sharing time.ConclusionHPs in HLCs see service users as equal partners in a collaboration based on shared responsibility, acknowledgement and generosity. In order to help, their practice involves a heightened level of ethical awareness, including a non-judgemental attitude and dialogue. HPs in HLCs have something to teach us about ethical acting and helping persons who are struggling with overweight or obesity to change their lifestyle and regain dignity. They seem to see the service users’ existential needs and have learned the art of meeting the other in her/his most vulnerable situation i.e., seeking help for a “wrong lifestyle”. It may be time to highlight the need for SMS and user involvement to focus on shared responsibility in partnership rather than personal responsibility. More research is required to explore the conditions for such practice.

Qualitative researchers are more and more keen to have social impact and make their research actionable. Participatory health research (PHR) involves people who live in vulnerable situations and fosters collaboration with other stakeholders, including policymakers, to improve the health and well-being of those whose lives are at stake. People who it concerns are engaged in every step of the research process of PHR to make a difference and strive for social change. Qualitative and elicitation methods are often the primary source of data gathering in PHR, and an arts-based approach is a powerful way to engage a salient audience, such as policymakers. This article provides a thick description of a PHR study aiming to create a learning platform for change in service delivery for unemployed people in order to better meet their needs.

The purpose of this study is to conduct empirical testing and analysis of user involvement and supervisor support, regarding the performance of accounting information systems at independent Islamic bank of Yogyakarta. This type of research is field research and uses quantitative methods. Where in this study using 50 respondents. The results of the study revealed that user involvement in the development of the system has a significant difference, so that user involvement has an influence in terms of the performance of accounting information systems while the support of supervisors also has a significant influence on the performance of accounting information systems in the independent Islamic bank in Yogyakarta. Therefore, the need for support from all stackholders to continue to improve the quality of service of the information system itself to be more compatible in the future.

Cloud innovation has become increasingly important to supply chain innovation and performance. User involvement is a crucial part of cloud innovation. However, the effect of user involvement in supply chain cloud innovation has not been thoroughly studied, particularly its effect on product cost and optimal price. In this paper, the authors attempted to bridge this major gap in the literature. The authors reviewed the relevant literature to define cloud innovation and user involvement in supply chain cloud innovation. Then the authors developed a game model based on the Bertrand model. Analysis of the model showed that user involvement affects product cost and optimal pricing in an interesting way. The authors also presented a real-life example of how user innovation takes place at Tailg electric vehicle company.

In embracing information technology museums are rediscovering the importance of driving innovation in services and processes in order to promote value creation within social and cultural ecosystems. Innovation is the key source for driving museums to change and develop value creation processes by using information technology in order to strengthen audience involvement and user participation, while also enhancing the role of museum professionals as user-centered mediators in order to build a bridge between information and knowledge sources so as to enhance learning and education opportunities for users by strengthening user involvement and participation. With their move from adopting technology-enabled innovation to following a knowledge- and organisation-driven innovation, museums push innovation, emerging as value-driven and innovation-led organisations that contribute to building knowledge and value creation processes strengthening technology, organisation and human resources, and engaging users and audience as sources and key driving forces that help museum to rethink and rediscover sustainable organisation-led innovation strategies which can lead to social and public value-based and innovation-driven processes within social and cultural ecosystems.

Outlier algorithms are becoming increasingly complex. Thereby, they become much less interpretable to the data scientists applying the algorithms in real-life settings and to end-users using their predictions. We argue that outliers are context-dependent and, therefore, can only be detected via domain knowledge, algorithm insight, and interaction with end-users. As outlier detection is equivalent to unsupervised semantic binary classification, at the core of interpreting an outlier algorithm we find the semantics of the classes, i.e., the algorithm’s conceptual outlier definition. We investigate current interpretable and explainable outlier algorithms: what they are, for whom they are, and what their value proposition is. We then discuss how interpretation and explanation and user involvement have the potential to provide the missing link to bring modern complex outlier algorithms from computer science labs into real-life applications and the challenges they induce.

Although numerous methods have been formalized for handling the technical aspects of developing domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs), user needs and usability aspects are often addressed in ad hoc manners and late in the development process. Working in this context, this paper presents the development of the customer journey modeling language (CJML), a DSML for modeling service processes from the end-user's perspective. CJML targets a wide and heterogeneous group of users, making it especially challenging regarding usability. This paper describes how an industry-relevant DSML was systematically improved by using a variety of user-centered design techniques in close collaboration with the target group and how their feedback was used to refine and evolve the syntax and semantics of CJML. We also suggest how a service-providing organization may benefit from adopting CJML as a unifying language for documentation purposes, compliance analysis, and service innovation. Finally, we generalize the experience gained into lessons learned and methodological guidelines.

Involving older people through co-design has become increasingly attractive as an approach to develop technologies for them. However, less attention has been paid to the internal dynamics and localized socio-material arrangements that enact this method in practice. In this paper, we show how the outcomes that can be achieved with user involvement often pertain to learning, but their content can differ significantly based on how the approach is implemented in practice. Combining explorative, qualitative findings from co-design conducted in four countries (Canada, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden), we illustrate how different types of learning occurred as design workshops engaged the experiences and skills of older people in different ways. Our findings make visible how learning can be a core outcome of co-design activities with older adults, while raising awareness of the role of the power relations and socio-material arrangements that structure these design practices in particular ways. To benefit from the full wealth of insights that can be learned by involving older people, deeper knowledge is needed of the implicit features of design, the materials, meanings, and power aspects involved.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to focus on user innovation strategies and their stability in the video game industry. The main research questions addressed are whether a significant portion of video game companies employ user innovation, and how these strategies are showing signs of success and evolve over time. Design/methodology/approach From various online data sources, information was extracted for 2,003 video game companies and 3,923 video games and analyzed using quantitative statistical approaches. Findings The analysed data show that a significant proportion of video game companies rely on user innovation-related strategies. If user innovation possibilities are provided, user ratings also tend to be higher. Over time, this strategy of enabling user innovation becomes more prevalent, but companies do also abandon such strategies or use them selectively. Especially, never employing them is associated with decreased company lifespan. Originality/value This is the first paper providing a large-scale insight into the evolution of user innovation strategies in an industry.

Background Women in the US have access to various hormonal contraceptive methods that can regulate menstruation. This study examined the attitudes and perceptions of reproductive-aged women toward contraceptive methods, including how menstrual regulation and suppression preferences influenced contraceptive choice. Methods Data collection used a mixed-methods approach, including 6 focus groups (n = 61), individual interviews (n = 18), and a web-based survey (n = 547). Results Participants described contraceptive method preferences that allowed monthly bleeding and daily control, expressing concerns about long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) because of decreased user involvement. Some participants noted LARC improved their menstrual control. Many participants felt menstruation was healthy, whereas suppression was abnormal and resulted in negative health outcomes. Though participants indicated LARC as beneficial (M = 4.99 ± 1.66), convenient (M = 5.43 ± 1.68), and healthy (M = 4.62 ± 1.69), they chose combined oral contraceptives due to convenience. Conclusions Findings suggest women need more information about menstrual regulation and suppression before selecting a contraceptive method, specifically in relation to LARC versus combined oral contraception. Framing menstrual suppression as healthy and natural may improve perceptions of long-term health consequences related to LARC. Providers should discuss menstrual suppression safety to ensure selection of contraceptive options aligning with women’s preferences and needs.

The present study is aimed at examining the influence of user involvement, user training and education, support of top management, and personal technical ability on the performance of accounting information system (AIS) at city-owned water company of Surakarta, at which some employees were selected purposively as the sample AIS users based on the criterion that that they have a one-year minimum work experience. The results of multiple regression analysis show that user involvement, support of top management, and personal technical ability had positive influence in AIS performance. Conversely, user training and education had no influence on AIS performance.

Artificial intelligence can provide organizations with prescriptive options for decision-making. Based on the notions of algorithmic decision-making and user involvement, we assess the role of artificial intelligence in workplace decisions. Using a case study on the implementation and use of cognitive software in a telecommunications company, we address how actors can become distanced from or remain involved in decision-making. Our results show that humans are increasingly detached from decision-making spatially as well as temporally and in terms of rational distancing and cognitive displacement. At the same time, they remain attached to decision-making because of accidental and infrastructural proximity, imposed engagement, and affective adhesion. When human and algorithmic intelligence become unbalanced in regard to humans’ attachment to decision-making, three performative effects result: deferred decisions, workarounds, and (data) manipulations. We conceptualize the user interface that presents decisions to humans as a mediator between human detachment and attachment and, thus, between algorithmic and humans’ decisions. These findings contrast the traditional view of automated media as diminishing user involvement and have useful implications for research on artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making in organizations.

BackgroundService user involvement in educating healthcare professionals in higher education can help student nurses develop a compassionate approach to care practice. This article explains one university’s initiative, the Patient as Coach Team (PaCT), and presents evaluation results from phase 1. The PaCT strategy involved a service user-led session with student nurses, in small groups, sharing experiences of care from a service user perspective.AimOur aim was to evaluate nursing students’ views of the PaCT session, involving service users in their teaching and learning.DesignSurvey.MethodStructured questionnaires with a free-text box were completed by student nurses ( n = 321). Structured question responses were analysed manually and free-text data thematically. Data collection took place from June 2016 to June 2017.ResultsThere were very positive responses to the survey questions, with students perceiving a positive impact on their learning. Five themes emerged from the students’ free-text responses: ‘Usefulness of the session’, ‘Seeing patients’ perspectives’, ‘Inspiring and motivating session’, ‘Good discussions with patient coach’ and ‘Overall views about the PaCT session’.ConclusionThe PaCT session provides a valid learning strategy, utilising coaching as a technique to enable student nurses to learn from service users’ experiences and perspectives of care. In addition, it contributes to students’ reflective practice about their individual professional practice in care settings.

User involvement is important in democratization of health care and is assumed to contribute to better and more relevant research. Despite increased requirements for user involvement in research, more studies are still needed. This study aimed at exploring what research agenda people with varied health problems consider as important, based on their own experience. The study had a phenomenological approach with a qualitative design. The sample consisted of 23 informants; nine had been critically ill and 14 were suffering from chronic muscle pain. Data were collected in five focus group interviews and one individual interview. A phenomenological approach was used in analyzing the data. Written consent was obtained from all the participants, and ethical considerations were taken throughout the entire research process. Despite various experiences among the participants, a quest to be taken seriously over time by healthcare professionals emerged as a strong meaning structure in both groups. Based on these experiences, continuity across lifetime changes turned out to be an important research topic for future research. User involvement should be appreciated in all parts of the research process. A crucial prerequisite is that the users get the opportunity to bring their own experiences into the process.

Popularity of mobile phones and huge growing for mobile applications make developers in need for flexible software process, which can deal with many challenges facing the mobile app development process. These challenges include: volatility of requirements, strong user involvement, development time tightness, process simplicity, and production of valuable software in low cost. This research study investigates the current mobile app development approaches adopted in Omani market and provides a comparison between existing methods. The results reveal that Agile approach is the most popular model for mobile software engineering in Omani, as it naturally fits most of the applications required in this market. The study also discusses various agile process models such as Scrum, XP, Lean, DSDM, and others. It is concluded that XP model is the most preferable model used by Omani developers due to its dynamic and adaptive nature for different mobile app processes. The study provides also a series of recommendations for mobile app developers which should help in selecting the most appropriate method that suits the targeted market sector

Summary The social care assessment is a ‘key interaction’ between a person and the local authority with ‘critical’ importance for determining a person’s needs for care and support. In order to achieve this, the guidance requires that assessments must be ‘person-centred throughout’. The concept of person-centred practice is now routinely invoked, but there remains little empirical evidence on how it gets put into practice. Findings This paper draws on interview data from 30 practitioners about their experiences of conducting social care assessments in England. While there was widespread support for the principles of a person-centred approach, tensions emerged for practitioners in three ways: the way in which ‘chat’ was used to build a relationship or conduct the assessment, whether to conduct the assessment via a conversation or by following the sections on the agency form and the extent to which the assessor should involve and negotiate the contributions of family members. Applications We argue that each of these dilemmas represents an occasion when a commitment to person-centred practice is negotiated between professionals and service users and sometimes compromised as a result. We consider the possibilities for and constraints on achieving person-centred assessments in a post-Care Act environment and discuss the implications for social work practice and research.

According to the OECD and the EU Commission, profits should be taxed ‘where value is created’. A commonly accepted definition of the term ‘value creation’ is so far lacking, however. This article offers a pragmatic and contextualized analysis of the new ‘value creation’ paradigm and examines its implications for international tax policy in the era of digitalization. In particular, it critically discusses the role of users that are said to contribute to value creation, for example by forming valuable networks, providing data or posting online content. The authors reject the argument that, due to user involvement in a firm’s value creation, the location of user groups and networks should give rise to taxation rights. They conclude that a better option is to recalibrate the international tax system based on the concept of sustained user relationships (SURE) which aligns itself with the rationale of a consistently defined notion of ‘value creation’.
