Search

The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through time. To date, there are about 1200 publications associated with PPBio that cover topics ranging from natural history to genetics and species distributions. Most of the field data and metadata are available through PPBio web sites or DataONE. Metadata is available for researchers that intend to explore the different faces of Brazilian biodiversity spatio-temporal variation, as well as for managers intending to improve conservation strategies. The Program also fostered, directly and indirectly, local technical capacity building, and supported the training of hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students. The main challenge is maintaining the long-term funding necessary to understand biodiversity patterns and processes under pressure from global environmental changes. Agricultural management significantly influences soil physical properties and soil erosion. However, there are few studies investigating the long-term effects of agricultural management on soil erosion and physical properties. Here, we assessed the impacts of 20-year agricultural land uses under different management practices on soil physical properties and interrill erosion. This study was conducted on an experimental farm of the Embrapa Western Agriculture, Brazil, and the treatments consisted of soybean cropping under conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT), crop-livestock integration during the cropping phase (CL-C) and the livestock phase (CL-L), and Brachiaria decumbens pasture under rotational grazing (PP). Soil samples were taken to evaluate the soil physical properties, and 25 rainfall simulations with an intensity of 60 mm h-1 were carried out by using a portable rainfall simulator with runoff plots of 0.7 m2 to quantify surface runoff and interrill erosion. After two decades, the crop-livestock systems (CL-L and CL-C) presented better soil physical properties in the topsoil layer (0.00?0.05 m) with a higher level of aggregation. Soil and water losses ranged from 4.7 to 14.4 × 10-3 kg m-2 and 4.9 to 12.4 mm, respectively. A higher reduction in soil erosion was observed in NT, while CT showed the highest soil erosion rates. These findings indicate an opportunity for a reduction of soil erosion by 60 % by adopting crop-livestock integration comparing CL-C with CT, while livestock under an integrated system (CL-L) decreased water loss by 30 % compared with PP. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a PGF2α-analogue (PGF) on ovulation and pregnancy rates after timed artificial insemination (TAI) in cattle. In Experiment 1 cows received an intravaginal progesterone-releasing device (CIDR) plus 2 mg im of estradiol benzoate (EB) on Day 0. The CIDR devices were removed on Day 8, and all cows received 150 μg im of d-cloprostenol (PGF2α-analogue), 300 IU of eCG and 1 mg of estradiol cypionate (ECP) im. On Day 9, cows were randomly assigned into two groups: 1) ECP Group (n = 17), that did not receive any further treatment; and 2) ECP-PG Group (n = 14) that were given 150 μg of d-cloprostenol (PGF) as adjuvant stimulus for ovulation. No difference between groups was detected in interval for ovulation (P = 0.5), and in the proportion of cows ovulating (P = 0.09). In Experiment 2, multiparous suckling crossbred Aberdeen Angus cows (n = 260), were treated into two groups, similarly as Experiment 1; ECP group (n = 122), and ECP-PG group (n = 138). All females were TAI on Day 10. The proportion of cows treated with ECP that became pregnant was 54.9% (67/122), and cows treated with ECP plus PGF was 55.1% (76/138; P = 0.9). In Experiment 3, 686 Nelore cows, 40 to 50 days postpartum, were treated as Experiment 1 (ECP group), however, on Day 8 cows were divided into 3 groups: ECP Group (n = 216); PGF-SC Group (n = 228), in which cows did not receive ECP and were given an additional subcutaneous injection of PGF on Day 8; and PGF-IM Group (n = 242), in which cows also did not receive ECP on Day 8 and were given an additional injection of PGF im on Day 9. On Day 10, estrus was evaluated at timed AI (TAI). There was no difference in the diameter of the dominant follicle at CIDR removal and at TAI, and pregnancy per AI among groups (P > 0.05). However, the proportion of cows that displayed estrus between CIDR removal and TAI was higher in ECP group than in PGF-SC and PGF-IM groups (P < 0.001). Cows that displayed estrus has higher P/AI than cows that did not (P = 0.008). In conclusion, these results suggested that intramuscular or subcutaneous injection of PGF2α could be successfully used to induce ovulation in cattle undergoing TAI, with similar pregnancy rates when compared with ECP. The subcutaneous injection of PGF on the same day of CIDR removal could be an interesting alternative due it reduces cattle management to obtain similar results. Resumo: O produto interno bruto (PIB) do agronegócio teve participação de 22,08% no PIB nacional, no último ano do período de 2005 a 2017. No setor, a maior participação foi dada pelo agregado de agrosserviços que teve, em média, 53,02% do total do PIB do agronegócio. Essa presença ativa mostra que, a jusante, há vínculos de grande relevância a serem considerados. Os valores encontrados para o PIB da bovinocultura de corte apresentam uma participação deste no PIB do agronegócio de 15,98%, também primordialmente representados pelos agrosserviços, que tiveram aumento acumulado de 25,39% no período. O método da matriz insumo-produto permitiu que fossem observadas todas as taxas de crescimento e queda dos agregados selecionados da bovinocultura de corte (insumos, agropecuária, agroindústria e agrosserviços), em que a principal queda é atribuída à agropecuária, com um percentual acumulado de 11,25%. Com os achados, é possível determinar a dependência da bovinocultura de corte, do agronegócio e da economia nacional de cada agregado e, assim, projetar cenários e melhores condutas gerenciais. Abstract: The agribusiness gross domestic product (GDP) accounted for 22.08% of the national GDP, in the last year of the period from 2005 to 2017. Within the sector, the largest share was given by the agriservices aggregate, which averaged 53.02% of the total agribusiness GDP. This active presence shows that there are downstream links of great relevance to be considered. The values found for the beef cattle GDP show 15.98% of participation in the agribusiness GDP, also primarily represented by agriservices that had an accumulated increase of 25.39% in the period. The input-output matrix method allowed of the observation of all growth and fall rates of selected aggregates of beef cattle (inputs, agribusiness, agro-industry, and agriservices), in which the main decrease is attributed to the agribusiness with an accumulated percentage of 11.25% . With these findings, it is possible to determine the dependence of beef cattle, agribusiness, and the national economy of each household and, thereby, design scenarios and better management behaviors. The objective of this study was to adapt and validate a computer model using the Computational Fluid Dinamics (CFD), in the prediction of temperature and air speed in a duct distribution system coupled to a heating furnace that is used in typical poultry houses in tropical and subtropical countries. The validation of the model with experimental data was satisfactory, presenting normalized mean square error NMSE values of 0.25 and 0.02 for air temperature and air speed, respectively. The results evidenced that the proposed model is adequate for predicting the air speed and temperature for this type of system, and could be used to improve the efficiency of the distribution of heat inside and around air ducts using different air speeds, types of materials and dimensions., El objetivo de este estudio fue adaptar y validar un modelo computacional haciendo uso de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD) para predecir la temperatura y la velocidad del aire en un sistema de distribución de ductos acoplado a un sitema de calefacción que es utilizado en las instalaciones avícola en los países tropicales y subtropicales. La validación del modelo con los datos experimentales fue satisfactoria, presentando valores medios normalizados del error cuadrado NMSE de 0,25 y 0,02 para la temperatura y velocidad del aire respectivamente. Los resultados muestran que el modelo propuesto es adecuado para predecir la velocidad del aire y la temperatura alrededor de este tipo de sistema, y podría ser utilizado para mejorar la eficiencia la distribución de calor en el interior y alrededor de los conductos, usando diferentes velocidades, tipos de materiales y dimensiones.

In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. These changes are jeopardizing the basin’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable hydropower plants, large-scale agriculture for commodity production, and aquaculture with non-native fish. If the current model persists, it will deepen the environmental crisis in the basin, compromising broad conservation goals and social development in the long term. Better policies will require thought and planning to minimize growing threats and ensure the basin’s sustainability for future generations. The human-induced impacts have a pivotal role in the discussion about the cause of these extinctions events. Although researchers are nearly unanimous about the current biodiversity crisis, there is still a debate about how these human-induced impacts affect biodiversity across different geographical scales. While our perception about landscape modification promoted by deforestation occurs at local scales, we treat the increase of greenhouse gas emissions and its consequences in a global perspective. This diffuse view about different processes but potential assembling properties illustrates the importance of combining small and broad-scales to improve our conservation actions and decelerate extinction events. Here, we propose an integrated framework (Ecoland) combining landscape ecology and macroecology for niche modelling applications, aiming to disentangle the effects of human-induced impacts on biodiversity and guide conservation tasks at multiple scales. We demonstrated the EcoLand application using a dataset of fruit-feeding butterfly species occurrence from the Atlantic Forest. Our findings highlight the impact of the land-use modification on the number of butterfly species. Finally, we discuss the method implications, its limitations and perspectives, and how it the Ecoland can help us to design conservation strategies aiming at the maintenance of biodiversity and its related policy practices. Empregou-se as frações das três componentes da radiação a do topo da atmosfera em correlação com o coeficiente de transmissividade atmosférica do plano horizontal, em uma base de dados de abril/1998 a dezembro/2007, cujas medidas nas três inclinações ocorreram em diferentes períodos, todavia concomitantes ao plano horizontal. O aumento do ângulo de inclinação da superfície propiciou aumento do espalhamento dos valores diários do índice de claridade para superfícies inclinada e horizontal. Nos agrupamentos anuais os piores desempenhos foram verificados na estimativa da radiação difusa diária para superfície inclinada, com valores máximos de espalhamentos iguais a 3,89 MJ m-2 d-1 (43,65%) e ajustamento em torno de 62%. Na estimativa das componentes global e direta da radiação solar nos planos inclinados, podem ser aplicadas, tanto as equações anuais como as mensais, com desempenhos dependentes das condições climáticas. Statistics equations and validations with groups of annual and monthly data were evaluated for global, direct and diffuse solar radiation components incident on the tilted surface to 12.85, 22.85 and 32.85° with the face North, in climate and geographical conditions of Botucatu, SP. It was employed the fractions of three components of extraterrestrial radiation in correlation with the coefficient clearness index horizontal plane, in a database of April/1998 to December/2007, whose measures at different periods in three inclinations, however concomitant to the horizontal plane. Increasing the angle of the surface led to increased scattering of the daily values of clearness index for inclined and horizontal surfaces. In annual groups, the lower performances were observed in the estimation of inclined daily diffuse radiation, with maximum Root Mean Square Error to 3.89 MJ m-2 d-1 (43.65%) and adjustments around 62%. In estimates of global and direct components of solar radiation on inclined planes, both annual and monthly equations can be applied, with performance dependents to climatic conditions. Todavia, o papel desses fatores no desenvolvimento da disfunção miocárdica induzida pela obesidade ainda não está claro. OBJETIVO: Este estudo pretende investigar se a obesidade induzida por um ciclo de dieta hipercalóricas resulta em disfunção cardíaca. Além disso, foi avaliado se essa alteração funcional em ratos obesos está relacionada com o prejuízo do trânsito de Ca+2 e do sistema beta-adrenérgico. MÉTODOS: Ratos Wistar machos, 30 dias de idade, foram alimentados com ração padrão (C) e um ciclo de cinco dietas hipercalóricas (Ob) por 15 semanas. A obesidade foi definida pelo aumento da porcentagem de gordura corporal dos ratos. A função cardíaca foi avaliada mediante análise isolada do músculo papilar do ventrículo esquerdo em condições basais e após manobras inotrópicas e lusitrópicas. RESULTADOS: Em comparação com o grupo controle, os ratos obesos apresentaram aumento da gordura corporal e intolerância a glicose. Os músculos dos ratos obesos desenvolveram valores basais semelhantes; entretanto, as respostas miocárdicas ao potencial pós-pausa e aumento de Ca+2 extracelular foram comprometidas. Não houve alterações na função cardíaca entre os grupos após a estimulação beta-adrenérgica. CONCLUSÃO: A obesidade promove disfunção cardíaca relacionada com alterações no trânsito de Ca+2 intracelular. Esse prejuízo funcional é provavelmente ocasionado pela redução da atividade da bomba de Ca+2 do retículo sarcoplasmático (SERCA2a) via Ca+2 calmodulina-quinase. (Arq Bras Cardiol. 2011; [online].ahead print, PP.0-0) Background: Several mechanisms have been proposed to contribute to cardiac dysfunction in obesity models, such as alterations in calcium (Ca(2+)) handling proteins and beta-adrenergic receptors. Nevertheless, the role of these factors in the development of myocardial dysfunction induced by obesity is still not clear.Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether obesity induced by hypercaloric diets results in cardiac dysfunction. Furthermore, it was evaluated whether this functional abnormality in obese rats is related to abnormal Ca(2+) handling and the beta-adrenoceptor system.Methods: Male 30-day-old Wistar rats were fed with standard food (C) and a cycle of five hypercaloric diets (Ob) for 15 weeks. Obesity was defined as increases in body fat percentage in rats. Cardiac function was evaluated by isolated analysis of the left ventricle papillary muscle under basal conditions and after inotropic and lusitropic maneuvers.Results: Compared with the control group, the obese rats had increased body fat and glucose intolerance. The muscles of obese rats developed similar baseline data, but the myocardial responsiveness to post-rest contraction stimulus and increased extracellular Ca(2+) were compromised. There were no changes in cardiac function between groups after beta-adrenergic stimulation.Conclusion: Obesity promotes cardiac dysfunction related to changes in intracellular Ca(2+) handling. This functional damage is probably caused by reduced cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) ATPase (SERCA2) activation via Ca(2+) calmodulin kinase. FUNDAMENTO: A hipertensão arterial apresenta alta prevalência e é um importante fator de risco cardiovascular. OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência da hipertensão arterial e sua associação com o estilo de vida. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, de base populacional, por meio de inquérito domiciliar realizado em Sinop-MT (n = 690). A amostra da pesquisa foi obtida por amostragem simples em duas etapas. A pressão arterial foi aferida três vezes e para a análise, a média das duas últimas medidas. Considerou-se hipertensos aqueles que apresentaram PA > 140/90 mmHg e/ou que referiram uso de drogas anti-hipertensivas. A análise de regressão logística múltipla hierarquizada foi utilizada para testar a associação entre a hipertensão e as variáveis independentes. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de hipertensão arterial foi de 23,2% (IC 95%: 20,1 - 26,6). A única variável relacionada ao estilo de vida associada à hipertensão arterial foi o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas, sendo protetor para as mulheres que consumiam até 15 g de etanol/dia (OR = 0,49; IC 95%: 0,26 - 0,93) e deletério para os homens que consumiam mais de 30 g de etanol/dia (OR = 2,94; IC 95%: 1,28 - 6,77). CONCLUSÃO: A hipertensão arterial associou-se independentemente com o consumo de bebidas alcoólicas, entre homens e mulheres. BACKGROUND: Hypertension is highly prevalent and is an important cardiovascular risk factor. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of hypertension and its association with lifestyle. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional population-based study conducted through a household survey in Sinop-MT (n = 690). The study sample was obtained by simple sampling in two steps. Blood pressure was measured three times and, for the analysis, the average of the last two measures was taken into account. The individuals who had BP > 140/90 mmHg and/or reported use of antihypertensive drugs were considered hypertense. The analysis of hierarchical multiple logistic regression was used to test the association between hypertension and independent variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension was 23.2% (95% CI: 20.1 - 26.6). The only variable related to lifestyle associated with hypertension was the consumption of alcoholic beverages, and this variable was protective for women who consumed up to 15g ethanol/day (OR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.26-0.93), and deleterious for men who consumed more than 30g ethanol/day (OR = 2.94, 95% CI: 1.28 to 6.77). CONCLUSION: Hypertension was independently associated with alcohol consumption among men and women. MÉTODOS: Estudio transversal, de base poblacional, por medio de encuesta domiciliaria llevada a cabo en Sinop-MT (n = 690). La muestra de la investigación se obtuvo por muestreo simple en dos etapas. La presión arterial se tomó tres veces y para el análisis, el promedio de las dos últimas mediciones. Se consideró como hipertensos aquellos que presentaron PA > 140/90 mmHg y/o que refirieron uso de fármacos antihipertensivos. El análisis de regresión logística múltiple jerarquizada se utilizó para probar la asociación entre la hipertensión y las variables independientes. RESULTADOS: La prevalencia de hipertensión arterial fue de un 23,2% (IC 95%: 20,1 - 26,6). Os cães foram avaliados segundo achados clínicos, epidemiológicos e laboratoriais e pela amplificação parcial e sequenciamento do gene dsb de Ehrlichia. DNA de Ehrlichia canis foi amplificado e sequenciado em 28 (40,0%) cães. Observou-se maior frequência deanimais positivos com idade até 12 meses (P < 0,05). Diarreia, apatia e anorexia foram os sinais clínicos mais frequentes observados em 55,2% (P = 0,05), 47,0% (P > 0,05) e 42,2% (P > 0,05) dos cães PCR positivos, respectivamente. Background: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been considered a potential mechanism of embolic stroke of undetermined origin. Objective: The aim of the present study was to identify the features of the right-to-left shunt (RLS) in patients with undetermined embolic ischemic stroke and compare them with those of patients with non-cardioembolic ischemic stroke. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with 168 patients with stroke and RLS separated into the following two groups: the undetermined embolic stroke group (UES group) and non-cardioembolic stroke group (NCES group). All patients were assessed by transcranial Doppler to evaluate the presence and quantification of microembolic signals (MES) at rest and under Valsalva maneuver. Results: Of all patients evaluated in the current study, 96 were included in the UES group and 72 in the NCES group. In the UES group, 65 patients had RLS with ≥10 MES (67.7%), which was higher than that observed in the NCES group (51.4%, p=0.038). According to the moment of the cardiac cycle, 75 patients (78.1%) in the UES group had a positive test at rest compared to 42 (58.3%) in the NCES group (p=0.007). Conclusions: The current study demonstrated that almost 70% of patients with undetermined embolic stroke and PFO presented a large RLS and more than 75% had RLS at rest. These findings suggest that the size of the shunt should be taken into account when evaluating whether PFO could be a possible mechanism underlying cryptogenic stroke. RESUMO Antecedentes: Uma das potenciais fontes embólicas no acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) de origem indeterminada é o forame oval patente (FOP). Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar as características do shunt direita-esquerda em paciente com AVC de etiologia indeterminada, presumidamente embólica, e comparar tais características com pacientes apresentando AVC por outras causas não embólicas. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo com 168 pacientes com AVC e forame oval patente, separados em dois grupos: AVC embólico de etiologia indeterminada e AVC por outras causas não embólicas. Todos os pacientes foram submetidos a Doppler transcraniano, para avaliar a presença de shunt direita-esquerda por meio do teste de embolia paradoxal. Além da quantificação de microbolhas, também foi avaliada a presença de shunt em repouso e sob manobra de Valsalva. Resultado: Do total, 96 pacientes foram incluídos no primeiro grupo (AVC indeterminado) e 72, no segundo grupo (AVC não embólico). No primeiro grupo, 65 pacientes exibiram shunt com passagem de mais de 10 microbolhas (67,5%), enquanto no segundo grupo isso aconteceu em 51,4% (p=0,038) dos casos. Além disso, 75 pacientes (78,1%) do primeiro grupo tiveram teste positivo ao repouso, comparados com 42 pacientes (58,3%) no segundo grupo (p=0,007). Conclusão: O presente estudo demonstrou que até 70% dos pacientes com AVC de etiologia indeterminada e forame oval apresentaram shunts maiores; em mais de 75%, houve passagem de microbolhas ao repouso. Esses achados sugerem que as características do shunt, como quantidade de microbolhas e passagem ao repouso, devem ser levadas em consideração na avaliação do FOP como possível mecanismo subjacente ao AVC.

A aquaponia é a integração da aquicultura com a produção vegetal, onde os resíduos da primeira atividade servem de insumos para a segunda, por meio de transformações biológicas que ocorrem no sistema. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da densidade inicial de peixes ornamentais (Carassius auratus) em mini sistemas de aquaponia, compostos por aquários de 100 L e camas de cultivo com argila expandida (20 L). Foram avaliadas duas densidades (três e seis peixes por sistema), com três repetições. Cada cama de cultivo recebeu uma muda de manjericão (Ocimium basilicum) e uma de salsinha (Petroselinum crispum). Os peixes foram alimentados diariamente até a saciedade aparente com ração comercial de 32% PB, duas a três vezes por dia durante 103 dias. Os valores mais altos de ganho em peso dos peixes foram observados nos aquários com menor densidade. A produção de massa verde foi mais elevada nos sistemas de maior densidade inicial de peixes. Conclui-se que a maior densidade inicial de peixes proporcionou melhor produção de massa verde, apesar de apresentar menores índices de crescimento dos peixes.

Hypodermic injections are a cause for great anxiety and reduced adherence to the subcutaneous application of insulin for glycemic control in diabetics or in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, increasing the risk of complications and mortality. Injured or sick people have to undergo several daily injections, forcing them to rotate the veins and regions used to recover from the trauma caused by the perforation of the skin, tissue, muscles, veins, and arteries. People who suffer from type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) need to have their glycemic control 3 to 5 times a day and to take insulin up to 3 times a day. In both cases, the patient needs to perforate the skin. To quantify the pain perceived by the patients depends on the evaluation of each patient and therefore is subjective. This study aims to understand the application and self-application of hypodermic injections and decrease pain during its application and the phobia of the patient, following the reasoning that the lower the effort to penetrate the needle, the less trauma in the tissue and therefore the pain provoked. For that, it was analyzed how some of the characteristics of the needle can influence the sensation of pain in the injection. The needle penetration effort was measured in an artificial tissue (substitute skin model) for different cannula diameters, roughness, depth of penetration, lubrication, and angles of the perforating tip bevel. This study aimed to find alternatives to facilitate the application and self-application of hypodermic injections, increase safety and comfort, and reduce the pain intensity perceived by the patient. To do this, the bevel of needles used repeatedly was analyzed in the profile projector and SEM to verify the loss of the profile or the formation of burrs that could hamper the penetration or traumatize the tissue during the reuse of needles. It has also been mechanically analyzed, which can be done to prevent that the needles used in the subcutaneous application do not inadvertently reach the muscle. The greater penetration effort observed in the needles with greater angle of the bevel is responsible for the patient's perception of pain. The goal of the review series on the H2 economy is to highlight the current status, major issues, and opportunities associated with H2 production, storage, transportation, distribution and usage in various energy sectors. In particular, Part I discussed the various H2 (grey and green) production methods including the futuristic ones such as photoelectrochemical for small, medium, and large-scale applications. Part II of the H2 economy review identifies the developments and challenges in the areas of H2 storage, transportation and distribution with national and international initiatives in the field, all of which suggest a pathway for establishing greener H2 society in the near future. Currently, various methods, comprising physical and chemical routes are being explored with a focus on improving the H2 storage density, capacity, and reducing the cost. H2 transportation methods by road, through pipelines, and via ocean are pursued actively in expanding the market for large scale applications around the world. As of now, compressed H2 and its transportation by road is the most realistic option for the transportation sector.

The power system is composed by six single-phase inverters, three of them for islanded or grid-tie modes and other three only for grid-tie mode. For enhancing stability and power quality, lead-acid batteries afford for backup energy allowing electric power supply for the utility in the absence of photovoltaic generation. While most inverters for DG are designed to provide active power and to operate with a fixed power factor, in this paper the inverters are used to dynamically control the active and reactive power flow. Consequently, the system is able to perform as an active compensator at the point of common coupling improving power quality. This micro-grid system is complemented with software for monitoring and databases for long term analysis. The survey was conducted on 132 landraces collected throughout the Cerrado, Pantanal and Amazon biomes, in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, including 10 commercial starches. The results are reflective of selection for different genetic variants in small isolated producers. Infrared analysis enables rapid identification of this material and is the first step in identifying starches with different properties. The results demonstrate the potential of MIR analyses for in situ evaluation, an additional option for identifying important varieties and value the development of efforts made by small producers, whose landraces have special and economically important properties. Thus, the presented control strategy allows the DG system to operate in both grid-connected and islanded modes with a smooth transition between them. Therefore, the DG control system strategy is performed by splitting the control input into two control-stages; the first one is in charge of reproducing sinusoidal voltages at the filter capacitors; meanwhile, the second is dedicated to modulate these voltages in order to achieve proper amplitude and phase for correct output current injection. By means of discrete-time state-space representation of the system, state-feedback controllers are obtained employing linear matrix inequalities considering uncertainties on grid inductances and optimization of the H2 norm for each operation mode. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed DG system is demonstrated and validated through computational simulations, as well as experimental evaluations. Occupational health is increasing in visibility within the scientific community and has become a field of international research and discussions in which occupational stress is described as a possible stressor.To analyze the relationship between anxiety and depression symptoms and socioeconomic level among technical-administrative employees of a public university in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.The sample comprised 89 participants. Data were obtained through Lipp's Inventory of Stress Symptoms for adults to identify levels of stress and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. An additional questionnaire was administered to gather information on educational and socioeconomic levels.About 45% of the participants exhibited symptoms of anxiety and 39% of depression, however, without direct relationship with their socioeconomic level. Among the participants with depression 50% were professors, and among those with depression 38.4% were administrative employees. Stress was more frequent among the participants who had attended higher education (29.6%) and graduate studies (33.3%).The study results indicate a high prevalence of anxiety and depression regardless of the socioeconomic level of the participants. Stress was more frequent among the participants with higher educational level.A saúde do trabalhador ganha destaque em âmbito científico, sendo tema de pesquisas e debates internacionais, apresentando o estresse laboral como potencial agente estressor.Caracterizar a incidência de sintomatologia referente à ansiedade e à depressão correlacionada aos níveis socioeconômicos em servidores técnico-administrativos de uma universidade estadual do estado de São Paulo.A amostra foi composta de 89 participantes. Os dados foram obtidos por meio do inventário de sintomas de estresse para adultos de Lipp, para detectar o nível de estresse; da escala hospitalar de ansiedade e depressão, para análise de ansiedade e depressão; e de um questionário informativo para detectar o nível educacional e sociodemográfico.Verificou-se que 47% dos participantes apresentaram sintomas de ansiedade e 39% de depressão, não havendo relação direta com o nível socioeconômico. Além disso, observou-se que, entre os indivíduos que apresentavam ansiedade, 50% eram docentes, e, do total de indivíduos com depressão, 38,4% eram do setor administrativo. O estresse encontra-se em maior escala nas categorias ensino superior (29,6%) e pós-graduados (33,3%).Os achados demonstraram elevada prevalência de ansiedade e depressão em todas as classes socioeconômicas investigadas. Ademais, indivíduos de nível educacional elevado são mais estressados que os de nível educacional inferior.

Nevertheless, unsustainable aquaculture causes nutrient buildup and favors biological invasions in natural habitats, demanding strategies to regulate such activity and therefore minimize environmental risks. Contrary to these concerns, the Brazilian Government has recently issued a new Federal Decree (10576/2020) encouraging the farming of invasive non-native species and excluding the Ministry of Environment from the legal process of issuing fish farming permits in reservoirs. The Decree increases the risk of non-native species establishment in inland waters at a national level and their propagation into neighboring countries, such as Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay. These consequences will endanger preserved freshwater ecosystems in the continent, including their native biodiversity, which represents both a problem of national sovereignty and a threat to the fundamental human right for a healthy environment. For this reason, the Decree contradicts the Brazilian Federal Constitution and conflicts with international treaties regulating invasive species and promoting sustainable development. It calls for immediate legal action and is yet another unfortunate sign of the increasing gap between science and decision making that has plagued the country in recent years. International audience; The ecosystem service framework has been instrumental in navigating local to global sustainability issues. Yet as ecosystem services (ES) focus on nature's positive contributions to people, some have argued that 'ecosystem disservices' (EDS), or nature's negative contributions, should also be taken into account to better orient sustainability policies. However, joint ES and EDS assessments remain rare in sustainability research, partly because of the persisting conceptual ambiguity around the EDS concept. This study aimed to develop these joint assessments and test their relevance in addressing sustainability issues. To this end, we devised a novel cascade model that helps to define ES and EDS in a multi-level context that considers both as coproduced by ecosystems and people. In order to explore the potential and limitations of this model, we then applied it in a Brazilian landscape where reconciling agriculture and forest conservation is a critical sustainability challenge. Using the model in comprehensive interviews with farmers about their perceptions and management practices of forests, we found that they had an overall positive valuation of forests, but identified both positive and negative interactions between forests and farms at different organizational levels. The model also revealed a vicious circle between crop expansion, a resulting decrease in certain ES and an increase in certain EDS, which might exacerbate tensions between agriculture and forest conservation in the future. Additionally, the model allowed a window on the diverse preventive and regulating practices that the interviewed farmers have adopted to cope with increasing EDS without necessarily harming biodiversity. Based on this case study, this novel cascade model seems a promising conceptual tool to uncover the interactions between ES and EDS, opening new research and policy avenues to support sustainability.

In this context, the following questions arise: (i) is it possible to recognize the growth pattern of eucalyptus species based on spectral features using machine learning (ML) for data modeling? (ii) what spectral features provides better accuracy? and (iii) what ML algorithms are most accurate for performing this modeling? To answer these questions, the present study evaluated the use of ML techniques using breast height and total plant height to classify the growth of five species of eucalyptus and Corymbria citriodora in an unsupervised learning, and the obtained classes for induce ML algorithms to recognize the species with relation to their growth using vegetation indices (VIs) and spectral bands (SBs). It were evaluated five eucalyptus species (E. camaldulensis, E. uroplylla, E. saligna, E. grandis e E. urograndis) and C. citriodora in experimental design of randomized blocks with four replicates, with 20 plants inside each experimental plot. The diameter at breast height and total plant height at stand level were obtained by measuring five trees in each experimental unit in seven measurements. During this same period, a flight was carried out using a remotely piloted aircraft for the acquisition of spectral variables (SBs and VIs). For recognition of eucalyptus species in relation to their growth two machine learning approaches were employed: supervised and unsupervised. The average accuracy obtained from 10-fold cross-validation, employing Random Forest algorithm and 24 features, was 0.76. This result shows that the proposed approach is appropriate to recognize different eucalyptus species based on their growth. This study aims to analyze the association between late diagnosis of oral and oropharyngeal cancers in Brazil and the contextual indicators of socioeconomic variables and coverage of Primary Health Care (PHC), and to assess the temporal trend of late diagnosis. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, secondary data were evaluated with a time series analysis. All Brazilian cities that reported at least one case of oral and oropharyngeal cancers each year in the period between 2000 and 2013 were included; and the staging was analyzed by calculating the ratio risk for late diagnosis for each municipality. The association between staging and socioeconomic variables and offer of PHC was calculated using multiple linear regression. The time trend of the risk ratio for late-stage diagnosis was calculated using the Prais–Winsten method. Results: One hundred and sixty Brazilian municipalities had at least one annual case of oral and oropharyngeal cancers notified to the INCA hospital system between 2000 and 2013. The adjusted model showed that the higher the Gini value (greater social inequality) and the lower the HDI value (less human development) was, the higher was the number of tumors diagnosed at a late stage, considering the size of the tumor. A greater risk for late diagnosis was identified, as early as at the stage of lymph node involvement, when there was a higher level of social inequality and lower level of coverage by Oral Health Teams (OHT) in PHC. The greater the social inequality, the greater was the risk of late diagnosis, as early as in the stage of metastasis. Conclusions: We concluded that, during the evaluated period, there was an increase in the number of cases diagnosed at the most advanced stage. Furthermore, there was association between higher levels of social inequality and an increase in the proportion of late diagnosis of oral and oropharyngeal cancers. In addition, the inclusion of Oral Health Teams in Primary Health Care promoted the early diagnosis of these types of cancers. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the perceptions of managers in large companies located in Brazil regarding the long-term and short-term benefits of adopting strategic actions to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Design/methodology/approach Based on an empirical analytical method, this paper examines interviews conducted with senior managers of leading companies located in Brazil to identify their perceptions of adopting strategic actions toward mitigating and adapting to climate change. Findings The key results are as follows: the most commonly perceived long-term benefit was operational improvement, based on the improved energy efficiency of operations; strategic management of aspects affected by climate change can make managers more aware of the benefits derived from the decisions taken; and a short-term view and aversion to uncertainty can lead to failures in strategic management, limiting the effectiveness of actions for mitigating and adapting to climate change. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature on the topic of climate change by presenting evidence that adaptation and mitigation measures can increase organizational managers’ perception of long-term benefits, and that climate change management structures guide managers to make the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the use of a free code computational tool, Patent2net, in the search of patents for the implementation of distance learning aimed at Continuing Medical Education. Design/methodology/approach This technical report is based on the extraction, organization and availability, in the format of graphs and dynamic tables, and also based on information in other patents on the subject, made available in the Espacenet database. Findings As a result, it was possible to identify a Chinese patent, free for reproduction in Brazil, which describes an e-learning system that simulates 3D scenarios for training nursing teams. Research limitations/implications The paper has used one unique patent database, but containing more than 100m documents. Practical implications The selected patent can contribute to the improvement of care and behavioral techniques of the health professionals. Social implications The training of health professionals can improve the public and supplementary health systems. Originality/value This is the first paper in that de technometric analisys of patents was used to solve a problem regarding the training of health professionals.

It is notoriously resistant to sterilization and disinfection procedures, largely due to an unusual hydrophobic cell wall and effective defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. This work shows an effective method to reduce M. tuberculosis quantity in water by using Ti/TiO2 nanotubes electrodes bare and coated with Ag nanoparticles by using photoelectrocatalytic oxidation process. The results have indicated 99.999% of inactivation of a solution spiked with standard and resistant strains of 1x10(4) CFU mL(-1) M. tuberculosis after 5 min of treatment at Ti/TiO2 photoanode in 0.05 mol L-1 Na2SO4 (pH 6) under applied potential of + 1.5 V versus Ag/AgCl and UV irradiation. The mycobacteria degradation was monitored by dissolved total organic carbon (TOC) removal, carbohydrate release, chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy measurements and it is slightly superior to photocatalysis and photolysis processes. All the results corroborated with the complete inactivation and degradation of the byproducts generated during cell lysis. [GRAPHICS] . As a result, it is inferred that when greenwashing is identified in the product, it loses the aspects of loyalty, satisfaction and benefits, as well as becoming a product that causes confusion of consumption. Further, consumer attitudes and beliefs show that they are guided by the aspects of perceived loyalty, satisfaction and benefits and that the perceived risk aspect is practically ignored.Originality/value The originality of this study is in evaluating consumer perception focusing on several aspects of purchase intention simultaneously, considering perception and behavior of consumer before greenwashing and green consumption and using all aspects together (satisfaction, loyalty, subjective and control forces, risk and benefits perception). Besides complementing with other determinants like consumer attitudes and beliefs, confusion of green consumption, behavior controlled in relation to green consumption and greenwashing. In addition, the effects of using points in the hyperhemispherical field of view in photogrammetric procedures have not been addressed. This article presents a comparative analysis of the fish-eye models (equidistant, equisolid-angle, stereographic, and orthogonal) for hyperhemispherical-lens and dual-fish-eye calibration techniques. The effects of adding points beyond 180 degrees field of view in dual-fish-eye calibration using stability constraints of relative orientation parameters are also assessed. The experiments were performed with the Ricoh Theta dual-fish-eye system, which is composed of fish-eye lenses with a field of view of approximately 190 degrees each. The equisolid-angle model presented the best results in the simultaneous calibration experiments. An accuracy of approximately one pixel in the object space units was achieved, showing the potential of the proposed approach for close-range applications. Sedentary behaviors, those that involve sitting and low levels of energy expenditure, have been associated with several adverse cardiometabolic effects. This study evaluated the chronic effects of a combined circuit weight interval training (CWIT) on physical fitness, quality of life, and heart rate variability (HRV), and compared the effects of CWIT-induced autonomic adaptations on different postures in adult sedentary workers. Twenty-seven sedentary workers (age 36.9 ± 9.2 years old, 13 men and 14 women) were divided into two groups: control, who continued their sedentary behavior, and experimental, who were submitted to a CWIT for 12 weeks, completing two ~40 min sessions per week. Monitoring of 8th, 16th, and 24th sessions revealed a moderate training load during sessions. Participants exhibited an improved aerobic capacity (VO2max, 34.03 ± 5.36 vs. 36.45 ± 6.05 mL/kg/min, p &lt, 0.05) and flexibility (22.6 ± 11.4 vs. 25.3 ± 10.1 cm, p &lt, 0.05) after the training period. In addition, they showed greater quality of life scores. However, the CWIT did not change body composition. Interestingly, more HRV parameters were improved in the seated position. The CWIT used in the current study was associated with improvements in several fitness and quality of life parameters, as well as in cardiac autonomic control of HR in adult sedentary workers. Examination of different body positions when evaluating changes in HRV appears to be a relevant aspect to be considered in further studies. Future randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with larger samples of both sexes should confirm these promising results.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-04-01 National Health and Medical Research Council Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation. Decreased cardiac contractility has been observed in cirrhosis, but the mechanisms that initiate and maintain cardiac dysfunction are not entirely understood. Aim of the study. We test the hypothesis that cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is related to deterioration of myocardial contractility due to alterations in calcium-handling proteins expression. In addition, we evaluated whether cardiac pro-inflammatory cytokine levels are associated with this process. Methods. Cirrhosis was induced by thioacetamide (TAA, 100 mg/kg/i.p., twice weekly for eight weeks). The myocardial performance was evaluated in isolated left ventricle papillary muscles under basal conditions and after inotropic challenge. The cardiac calcium handling protein expression was detected by Western blotting. Cardiac TNF-alpha and IL-6 levels were measured by ELISA. Results. Thioacetamide induced liver cirrhosis, which was associated with cirrhotic cardiomyopathy characterized by in vivo left ventricular diastolic and systolic dysfunction as well as cardiac hypertrophy. In vitro baseline myocardial contractility was lower in cirrhosis. Also, myocardial responsiveness to post-rest contraction stimulus was declined. Protein expression for RYR2, SERCA2, NCX, pPBL Ser16 and L-type calcium channel was quantitatively unchanged; however, pPBL Thr17 was significantly lower while IL-6 was higher. Conclusions. Our study demonstrates that cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is associated with decreased cardiac contractility with alteration of phospholamban phosphorylation in association with higher cardiac pro-inflammatory IL-6 levels. The aim of this study was to describe a reliable method for recording flash visual evoked potentials (F-VEPs) in nonsedated horses. F-VEPs were recorded from both eyes in 20 healthy and calm, adult horses. Recordings were accomplished without sedation, anaesthesia, or the use of mydriatic drugs. The mean and standard deviation of the latency of the most evident positive peak was 52.76±2.37 ms (P53). The mean latencies of the preceding and following negative peaks were 38.14±4.62 (N38) and 72.35±5.33 ms (N72), respectively. There were 2 mean peak-to-peak amplitudes (N38 – P53 and P53 – N72), and they were 11.85±6.21 and 22.81±11.50 µV, respectively. F-VEP was also recorded from 3 horses (6 eyes) before and during sedation with 2 doses each of xylazine (0.4 and 1.1 mg/kg) or detomidine (0.005 and 0.014 mg/kg). It was possible to obtain a reliable F-VEP with a P53 latency in horses without sedation that was similar to the P2 peak described in previous studies, and these data can be used in the future as a normal reference for comparisons in horses with different diseases using a similar methodology. Sedation affected the results by depressing peak amplitudes and increasing latencies or by completely obscuring any response. The exact impact of sedation on VEPs must be evaluated with much caution due to the small sample size. Furthermore, multivariate approaches are often used, especially the Fisher and Anderson discriminant functions. New methodologies based on machine learning (ML) have shown to be promising for such procedures, but there is nonetheless a need for further evaluation and comparison of these methods. Thus, the present study evaluates the efficacy of supervised ML algorithms in classifying populations with different degrees of similarity-comparing them with discriminant analysis techniques proposed by Anderson and by Fisher. The methods of supervised ML tested were as follows: Naive Bayes, Decision Tree, k-Nearest Neighbors (kNN), Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Networks (MLP/ANN). To compare classification methods, we used phenotypic data of populations with different degrees of genetic similarity. Data stemmed from the genotypic information simulation for different populations submitted to the backcrossing scheme. Accuracy here means 30 repetitions from each classification method were compared by the Friedman and Nemenyi tests with a 95% confidence level. Classification methods based on machine learning algorithms showed superior results to the Fisher and Anderson discriminant functions, obtaining high accuracy where there was a higher similarity between populations. The kNN, Random Forest, SVM and Naive Bayes algorithms presented the highest accuracy, surpassing the Decision Tree algorithm and even MLP/ANN (which lost accuracy at a 96.88% similarity condition between populations). Thus, the present work confirms that ML techniques demonstrate greater accuracy in the discrimination and classification of populations without the limitations of statistical techniques. Background Pulmonary sequelae (PS) in patients with chronic paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) typically include pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema. Knowledge of the molecular pathways involved in PS of PCM is required for treatment and biomarker identification. Methodology/Principal findings This non-concurrent cohort study included 29 patients with pulmonary PCM that were followed before and after treatment. From this group, 17 patients evolved to mild/ moderate PS and 12 evolved severe PS. Sera from patients were evaluated before treatment and at clinical cure, serological cure, and apparent cure. A nanoACQUITY UPLC-Xevo QT MS system and PLGS software were used to identify serum differentially expressed proteins, data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD026906. Serum differentially expressed proteins were then categorized using Cytoscape software and the Reactome pathway database. Seventy-two differentially expressed serum proteins were identified in patients with severe PS compared with patients with mild/moderate PS. Most proteins altered in severe PS were involved in wound healing, inflammatory response, and oxygen transport pathways. Before treatment and at clinical cure, signaling proteins participating in wound healing, complement cascade, cholesterol transport and retinoid metabolism pathways were downregulated in patients with severe PS, whereas signaling proteins in gluconeogenesis and gas exchange pathways were upregulated. At serological cure, the pattern of protein expression reversed. At apparent cure pathways related with tissue repair (fibrosis) became downregulated, and pathway related oxygen transport became upregulated. Additionally, we identified 15 proteins as candidate biomarkers for severe PS. Conclusions/Significance Development of severe PS is related to increased expression of proteins involved in glycolytic pathway and oxygen exchange), indicative of the greater cellular activity and replication associated with early dysregulation of wound healing and aberrant tissue repair. Our findings provide new targets to study mechanisms of PS in PCM, as well as potential biomarkers., Author summary Pulmonary fibrosis is the main sequel of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a fungal disease that affects mainly men, rural workers. The development of pulmonary fibrosis is complex and involves several mechanisms that culminate in aberrant collagen production and deposition in the lungs making it became stiff and blocking the air passages. These changes lead to difficulty in breathing and in PCM patients dyspnea in response to high or low levels of exertion is common. Therefore, these patients show incapacity to work and the decreased quality of life. With the possibility of identifying some marker, for example, it could help the indication of respiratory physiotherapy, professional rehabilitation, or therapeutic intervention. This is the first study to examine the pulmonary sequelae (PS) in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis using an approach combining proteomics with bioinformatics. Here, we identify the specific proteome pattern found in PCM patients with severe sequelae that distinguishes these patients from that with mild/moderate sequelae. Our results showed that time points immediately before treatment and at clinical cure are key moments at which PS can progress to severe PS due a dysregulation in wound healing with consequent delayed in the healing processes resulting in an aberrant scar. As such, we suggest that the prognoses for severe PS should be considered as soon as possible and as early as diagnosis of PCM. Furthermore, we used proteomics to identify possible serum biomarkers with which to predict the likely development of severe PS, to be validated in future studies.

The aim of this systematic review was to identify and evaluate the studies with animal models (rodents) that were exposed to the high-fat diet during pregnancy and/or lactation period to investigate oxidative stress and lipid and liver enzyme profile of mothers and their offspring. The electronic search was performed in the PUBMED (Public/Publisher MEDLINE), EMBASE (Ovid), and Web of Science databases. Data from 77 studies were included for qualitative analysis, and of these, 13 studies were included for meta-analysis by using a random effects model. The pooled analysis revealed higher malondialdehyde levels in offspring of high-fat diet groups. Furthermore, the pooled analysis showed increased reactive oxygen species and lower superoxide dismutase and catalase in offspring of mothers exposed to high-fat diet during pregnancy and/or lactation. Despite significant heterogeneity, the systematic review shows oxidative stress in offspring induced by maternal HFD. Non-native fish (NNF) can threaten megadiverse aquatic ecosystems throughout the planet, but limited information is available for the Amazon Region. In this study we review NNF data in the Amazonian macroregion using spatiotemporal records on the occurrence and the richness of NNF from a collaborative network of 35 regional experts, establishing the Amazon NNF database (ANNF). The NNF species richness was analyzed by river basin and by country, as well as the policies for each geopolitical division for the Amazon. The analysis included six countries (Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Colombia), together comprising more than 80% of the Amazon Region. A total of 1314 NNF occurrence records were gathered. The first record of NNF in this region was in 1939 and there has been a marked increase in the last 20 years (2000–2020), during which 75% of the records were observed. The highest number of localities with NNF occurrence records was observed for Colombia, followed by Brazil and Bolivia. The NNF records include 9 orders, 17 families and 41 species. Most of the NNF species are also used in aquaculture (12 species) and in the aquarium trade (12 species). The most frequent NNF detected were Arapaima gigas, Poecilia reticulata and Oreochromis niloticus. The current data highlight that there are few documented cases on NNF in the Amazon, their negative impacts and management strategies adopted. The occurrence of NNF in the Amazon Region represents a threat to native biodiversity that has been increasing “silently” due to the difficulties of large-scale sampling and low number of NNF species reported when compared to other South American regions. The adoption of effective management measures by decision-makers is urgently needed and their enforcement needed to change this alarming trend and help protect the Amazon’s native fish diversity.

Reducing the use of fossil fuels and mitigating environmental impacts justifies the generation of electricity from renewable sources. In Brazil, sugarcane is the biomass that most generates electricity, and Mato Grosso do Sul state accounts for 10% of this electricity. Production can be traded in the spot market, long-term contracts regulated by the Federal Government, or free contracts between companies. Despite these options, only half of the sugarcane industries in Mato Grosso do Sul commercialize electricity. Based on Transaction cost economics, the objective of this work is to identify the most suitable governance structures used in the commercialization of electricity produced by the sugarcane plants in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and to evaluate the institutional environment impact on these structures. A questionnaire was applied to all sugarcane companies in the state, and interviews were conducted with specialists and regulatory agencies. The results indicate that the widespread use of plural forms of governance for the commercialization of energy reduces the risks linked to a weak institutional environment and judicialization of the spot market. The preference for free contracts and a large number of short-term transactions indicate a lack of trust in the existing institutions, with the need to strengthen independent regulatory agencies. resumo: Reduzir o uso de combustíveis fósseis e os impactos ambientais justifica a geração de eletricidade a partir de fontes renováveis. No Brasil, a cana-de-açúcar é a biomassa que gera mais energia elétrica e o estado do Mato Grosso do Sul é responsável pela geração de 10% dessa eletricidade. A produção pode ser negociada no mercado spot em contratos de longo prazo regulados pelo Governo Federal e em contratos livres, entre empresas. Apesar dessas opções, apenas metade das indústrias canavieiras do Mato Grosso do Sul comercializa eletricidade. Com base na Economia dos Custos de Transação, o objetivo desta pesquisa é identificar, dentre as estruturas de governança utilizadas, as mais adequadas para a comercialização da eletricidade produzida pelas usinas de cana-de-açúcar no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, além de avaliar o impacto do ambiente institucional nessas estruturas. Um questionário foi aplicado a todas as empresas canavieiras do estado e foram realizadas entrevistas com especialistas e agências reguladoras. Os resultados indicam que o uso generalizado de formas plurais de governança reduz os riscos associados a um ambiente institucional fraco e à judicialização do mercado spot. A preferência por contratos livres e transações de curto prazo indica a falta de confiança nas instituições, com a necessidade de fortalecer agências reguladoras independentes.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 Background: Canine eosinophilic folliculitis is a dermatological disease of acute onset with development of erosive to ulcerative papular lesions, especially on the nasal bridge, that may cause severe skin abnormalities leading to discomfort and pain to the patient. The aim of this report was to characterize a case of a canine eosinophilic folliculitis with papular, ulcerative and crusting dermatitis on the nasal bridge, papules on eyelid and pinna, with confirmed diagnosis based on aspiration cytology, history and response to immunosuppressive therapy with glucocorticoid. Case: An 1-year-old intact Daschund was attended showing an acute onset (over 4 h) of generalized urticarial reaction and nonpruriginous lesion at the muzzle with mild serosanguineous exudate, which persisted for 96 h when the dog was evaluated. It was observed a papular and ulcerative dermatitis with serosanguineous exudate and hematic crusts at nasal bridge, papules measuring 2 mm in diameter in the medial and lateral canthus of the left eyelid, ulcerative papule with hematic crust in the border of left ear pinna, multifocal papules on the skin, dyskeratosis and generalized hair loss. The patient was anesthetized for blood sampling (CBC and serum biochemistry), lesions fine-needle aspiration, scraping and imprint for cytological examination, bacterial culture and nasal turbinates radiography. Fragments for histopathological evaluation were also collected. Erythrogram and platelet evaluation were unremarkable. Leukogram revealed leukocytosis (neutrophilia, lymphocytosis, monocytosis and eosinophilia). Serum biochemistry revealed hyperalbuminemia and discrete hyperproteinemia; values of alanine aminotransferase, creatinine and globulins were within normal range. In cytological examination, intense cellularity was observed with predominance of eosinophils (60%), neutrophils (35%), macrophages performing cytophagocytosis (5%) and degenerated cells. There was no bacterial growth within 48 h after incubation of nasal bridge lesion swab. There were no abnormalities identified at radiographic evaluation of nasal turbinates. As the patient was already with antibiotic therapy and steroidal anti-inflammatory, it was opted to maintain it, since interruption between the day of examination and laboratory results could cause more prejudice than benefit, corticosteroid dose, however, was readjusted (prednisone 2 mg/kg/per os/every 24h). After 1 week of treatment the owner reported significant improvement of clinical signs without any further complaint. Discussion: Typically, type I hypersensitivity reactions such as insect bites do not exceed clinical signs of erythema, local edema and pruritus, with spontaneous remission of clinical signs within few hours after exposure to the antigen. Eosinophilic folliculitis, however, may cause more severe clinical alterations, such as pain, apathy and hyporexia. Nasal bridge is the predominant site described to be affected in cases of eosinophilic folliculitis, being auricular pinna, thorax and limbs considered atypical presentations which can delay proper diagnosis, since in endemic regions for diseases such as visceral leishmaniasis, infectious etiology may be listed first. Differential diagnosis also includes superficial pyoderma, juvenile cellulitis, pemphigus foliaceus and pharmacodermia. The case described in this report emphasize the importance of an accurate diagnosis as well as an early and adequate treatment in order to promote satisfactory response. Also, highlights inadequate use of antimicrobials as a direct consequence of lack of laboratorial investigation. In this context, leaves are the most available plant organ used, given their perenniality and diversity. Computer-based image analysis help extract morphological features for botanical identification and maybe a solution to taxonomic problems requiring extensively trained specialists that use visual identification as the primary method for this approach. In this study, were collected 40 leaves from 30 trees and shrub species from 19 different families. Here, we compared two popular image capture devices: a scanner and a mobile phone. Features analyzed comprised color, shape, and texture. The performance of both devices was compared through three machine learning algorithms (adaptive boosting—AdaBoost, random forest, support vector machine—SVM) and an artificial neural network model (deep learning). Computer vision showed to be efficient in the identification of species (higher than 93%), with similar results obtained for both mobile phones and scanners. The algorithms SVM, random forest and deep learning performed more efficiently than AdaBoost. The use of these methods is intended to identify high-risk newborns and provide immediate clinical intervention after birth. Altogether, 56 animals (24 ewes and 32 lambs) were included in the study and divided into 3 groups. Group I consisted of 8 ewes that were at approximately 145 days of gestation; this group delivered 10 lambs naturally. Group II consisted of 8 ewes that were at 138 days' gestation; this group delivered 11 lambs by cesarean section. Group III consisted of 8 ewes at 138 days' gestation; this group was administered intramuscular dexamethasone (16mg/animal) 36 hours prior to a cesarean section. Group III delivered11 lambs. Cytological tests were performed using a microscope with a maximum magnification of 1000x, while the Clements test was visually observed by one of the researchers. Amnioticfluid lamellar body counts were measured using transmission electron microscopy. Among the staining methods, hematoxylin-Shorr was reliable, and Group III had a greater number of orangeophilic cells when compared to Group II, probably due to corticoid administration. The Clements test showed pulmonary maturity in approximately 20% of Group I lambs and Group II showed 9.1% of bubbles; however, Group III had the highest pulmonary maturity percentage (36.4%). The lamellar bodies were measured, and all groups had sizes between 0.019 and 0.590µm. Radiographic evaluation revealed that the majority of lambs presented some level of pulmonary radiodensity, indicating an acinar pattern at birth. These results are in line with the expectations of each group. We found that the normal group showed greater pulmonary maturity, whereas Group II presented pulmonary immaturity, which is expected because this group comprised lambs born prematurely and Group III showed pulmonary. Orange juice (OJ) is rich in polyphenols with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. After myocardial infarction (MI), complex changes occur in cardiac structure and function, which is known as cardiac remodeling (CR). Oxidative stress and inflammation can modulate this process. We hypothesized that the consumption of OJ attenuates the CR after MI.To evaluate the influence of OJ on CR after MI by analysis of functional, morphological, oxidative stress, inflammation, and energy metabolism variables.A total of 242 male rats weighing 200-250 g were submitted to a surgical procedure (coronary artery ligation or simulated surgery). Seven days after surgery, survivors were assigned to one of the four groups 1) SM, sham animals with water and maltodextrin (n= 20); 2) SOJ, sham animals with OJ (n= 20); 3) IM, infarcted animals with water and maltodextrin (n= 40); and 4) IOJ, infarcted animals with OJ (n = 40). Statistical analysis was performed by the two-way ANOVA supplemented by Holm-Sidak. Results are presented as mean ± standard deviation, the level of significance adopted was 5%.After 3 months, MI led to left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy, with systolic and diastolic dysfunction, and increased oxidative stress and inflammatory mediators. OJ intake reduced LV cavity and improved systolic and diastolic function. The OJ animals presented lower activity of glutathione peroxidase and higher expression of heme-oxygenase-1 (HO-1).OJ attenuated CR in infarcted rats and HO-1 may be play an important role in this process.O suco de laranja (SL) é rico em polifenóis com propriedades anti-inflamatórias e antioxidantes. Após o infarto do miocárdio (IM), mudanças complexas ocorrem na estrutura e na função cardíacas, processo conhecido como remodelação cardíaca (RC). O estresse oxidativo e a inflamação podem modular esse processo. Nossa hipótese foi a de que o consumo de SL atenua a RC após o IM.Avaliar a influência do SL sobre a RC após IM pela análise de variáveis funcionais, morfológicas, de estresse oxidativo, de inflação, e de metabolismo energético.Um total de 242 ratos machos pesando entre 200 e 250g foram submetidos a um procedimento cirúrgico (ligação da artéria coronária ou cirurgia simulada). Sete dia após a cirurgia, os animais sobreviventes foram divididos para um dos quatro grupos: 1) SM, animais sham que receberam água e maltodextrina (n= 20); 2) SSL, animais sham que receberam SL (n= 20); 3) IM, animais infartados que receberam água e maltodextrina (n= 40); e 4) ISL, animais infartados que receberam SL (n = 40). A análise estatística foi realizada pelo teste de ANOVA com dois fatores com o teste de Holm-Sidak. Os resultados foram apresentados em média ± desvio padrão, e o nível de significância adotado foi de 5%.Três meses depois, o IM levou à hipertrofia do ventrículo esquerdo (VE), com disfunção sistólica e diastólica, e aumento nos mediadores inflamatórios e de estresse oxidativo. Os animais que consumiram SL apresentaram menor atividade da glutationa peroxidase e maior expressão da heme-oxigenase-1 (HO-1).O SL atenuou a RC, e a HO-1 pode exercer um importante papel nesse processo.

Here, we evaluated the impacts that resulted from the replacement of native vegetation with pastures on habitat occupancy, colonisation and local extinction of two Neotropical frogs with contrasting ecological strategies, Leptodactylus bufonius and L. chaquensis. We conducted fieldwork during two reproductive seasons in 50 temporary ponds in the Brazilian Chaco. We used site occupancy models in a multi-scale approach to identify landscape changes affecting population parameters and to determine the scale of interaction between species and the landscape. At local (10 m) and scales 400 m), landscape modification limited dispersal of the smaller species L. bufonius. We found that the amount of habitat available is important in maintaining population parameters such as occupancy. However, our results highlight that the spatial distribution of habitats may also play an important role in the persistence and mobility of frogs in agricultural landscapes and that it is possible to identify a scale of effect in such anthropic landscapes. We recommend the consideration of reproductive and dispersal requirements of amphibian species, along with body size, as predictors of the spatial scale for management of populations in farmlands. Our objective was to examine the relationship between change of direction (CoD) performance, with (CoDb), and without the ball (CoDwb), and selected measures of physical fitness (jump performance, speed, balance) in elite soccer players, according to players&rsquo, positions. Forty elite male soccer players performed the change-of-direction and acceleration test (CODAT) with (CODATb), and without the ball (CODATwb), 5- and 20-m sprint tests, the 5-jump test (5JT), and the Y-balance test (YBT). Analyses of the whole sample showed significant correlations between all CODAT measures (CODATwb and CODATb, respectively) and sprint 5-m (r = 0.72, p &lt, 0.001, r = 0.52, p &lt, 0.01), sprint 20-m (r = 0.54, p &lt, 0.03, r = 0.45, p &lt, 0.05), jump (r = &minus, 0.62, p &lt, 0.01, r = &minus, 0.64, p &lt, 0.01) and balance (r = &minus, 0.50, p &lt, 0.83, p &lt, 0.001) performances. Correlations were significantly different between player positions (defender, midfielder and striker). When examining the entire sample, the single best predictor of CODATwb was performance in the 5-m test with an explained variance of 52% (p &lt, 0.001). For CODATb, the Y-balance performance explained 68% of the variance of performance (p &lt, 0.001). In conclusion, soccer coaches and fitness trainers are advised to improve players&rsquo, CoD using neuromuscular training that mimic crucial match actions. Meanwhile, CoD testing and training should be designed in line with the demands of playing position.

The purpose of this investigation was to detect Leishmania sp. infection in hemodialysis patients who had received multiple blood transfusions at a private clinic in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul state, Midwest Brazil. Methods: Fifty randomly selected volunteers were interviewed for collection of demographic, socioeconomic, and epidemiological data. Indirect immunofluorescence (titers positive when >= 1:40) and rK39 immunochromatographic tests were employed for serological investigation. Results: Males predominated (60%). Age ranged from 20 to 77 years. Most subjects reported being on hemodialysis for at least one year (94%) and 84% were candidates for kidney transplantation, 67% of whom were on the waiting list. Leishmania sp. infection was detected in 32%. Contact with infected dogs was the only variable associated with infection. Conclusions: Under immunocompromised conditions, VL is opportunistic and potentially fatal. Despite existing risks, screening for VL is not performed in asymptomatic donors and recipients. The detection of anti-Leishmania antibodies in these patients reinforces the need for infection screening before immunosuppressive treatment is initiated to reduce not only the risks of VL development and severity, but also mortality rates in cases of reactivation of latent infection. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-09-21 A novel approach to distinguish soybean seed vigor based on Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) associated with chemometric methods is presented. Batches with high and low vigor soybean seeds were analyzed. Support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), and discriminant analysis were applied to the raw spectral and reduced-dimensionality data from PCA (principal component analysis). Proteins, fatty acids, and amides were identified as the main molecules responsible for the discrimination of the batches. The cross-validation tests pointed out that high vigor soybean seeds were successfully discriminated from low vigor ones with an accuracy of 100%. These findings indicate FTIR spectroscopy associated with multivariate analysis as a new alternative approach to discriminate seed vigor. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-02-01 Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre Aims: To compare the blood pressure (BP)-lowering efficacy of a chlorthalidone/amiloride combination pill with losartan, during initial management of JNC 7 Stage I hypertension in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: In an a priori subgroup analysis of a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, volunteers aged 30–70 years, with stage I hypertension and diabetes mellitus, were randomized to 12.5/2.5 mg of chlorthalidone/amiloride (N = 47) or 50 mg of losartan (N = 50), and followed for 18 months in 21 clinical centers. If BP remained uncontrolled after three months, study medication dose was doubled, and if uncontrolled after six months, amlodipine (5 and 10 mg) and propranolol (40 and 80 mg BID) were added as open label drugs in a progressive fashion. Results: Systolic BP decreased to a greater extent in participants allocated to diuretics compared to losartan (P < 0.001). After 18 months of follow-up, systolic BP was 128.4 ± 10.3 mmHg in the diuretic group versus 133.5 ± 8.0 in the losartan group (P < 0.01). In the diuretic group, 36 out of 43 participants (83.7%) had a JNC 7 normal BP, compared to 31/47 (66%) in the losartan group (P = 0.089). Serum cholesterol was higher in the diuretic arm at the end of the trial. Other biochemical parameters and reports of adverse events did not differ by treatment. Conclusions: Treatment of hypertension based on a combination of chlorthalidone and amiloride is more effective for BP lowering compared to losartan in patients with diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Acute effects of different rest intervals between sets of resistance exercise on neuromuscular fatigue in trained older women.J Strength Cond Res34(8): 2235-2240, 2020-The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effect of different rest intervals (RIs) between sets on total volume, time under tension, maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), and integrated electromyography (iEMG) activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) muscles. Twenty-one resistance-trained older women (66.4 +/- 4.4 years; 69.1 +/- 11.4 kg; 157.5 +/- 5.0 cm) completed 3 different test sessions, performed 48-72 hours apart, in a randomized and counterbalanced within-subjects design. In 2 test sessions, the participants performed 3 sets to voluntary exhaustion with loads that corresponded to 15 maximum repetitions, with either 1-minute RI (RI-1) or 3-minute RI (RI-3). In another test session, the participants remained at rest for 15 minutes. The total volume of exercise and time under tension for the RI-3 session was statistically higher (p 0.05). The findings of this study suggest that different RIs between sets lead to different acute neuromuscular responses. The longer RI seemed to induce higher neuromuscular fatigue, likely due to higher total volume and time under tension. Thus, longer RI may be a strategy that possibly would lead to greater long-term gains in muscle strength and hypertrophy of the lower limbs in trained older women. OBJETIVO: Analisar a influência da combinação entre dieta intermitente e exercício físico sobre a capacidade funcional, metabolismo glicêmico e remodelação cardíaca. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados 60 ratos Wistar machos distribuídos em quatro grupos: Controle (C), Exercício Físico (EF), Dieta Intermitente (DI) e Exercício Físico e Dieta Intermitente (EDI). Durante 12 semanas, enquanto C e EF foram tratados diariamente com dieta comercial padrão ad libitum, DI e EDI receberam dieta similar em dias alternados com dias de jejum. Os grupos EF e EDI foram submetidos a protocolo de corrida em esteira rolante. Posteriormente, foram analisadas capacidade funcional, comportamento nutricional e metabolismo glicêmico. Além da morfologia do coração, a expressão proteica das proteínas extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) e c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) no coração foi avaliada por Western-blot. A análise dos resultados foi feita por meio de Two-Way ANOVA e teste de Student-Newman-Keuls. O nível de significância considerado foi de 5%. RESULTADOS: O exercício físico aumentou a capacidade funcional nos grupos EF e EDI, e acarretou fibrose cardíaca. A combinação entre dieta intermitente e exercício físico resultou em menor área sob a curva de glicemia e menores medidas de área e interstício cardíaco no EDI em relação ao EF. A expressão de proteínas ERK e JNK foi similar entre os grupos (p>0,05). CONCLUSÕES: Dieta intermitente se associa com melhor tolerância glicêmica e atenua o processo de remodelação cardíaca decorrente do exercício físico. (Arq Bras Cardiol. 2020; 115(2):184-193). BACKGROUND: The effects of non-pharmacological interventions such as calorie restriction and exercise training on health and prevention of cardiovascular diseases have been investigated in clinical and experimental studies. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the influence of intermittent fasting and exercise training on functional fitness, glycemia and cardiac remodeling. METHODS: Wistar rats (n=60) were randomly divided into four groups: control, exercise training (ET), intermittent fasting (IF) and exercise training plus intermittent fasting (ETI). Over 12 weeks, control and ET animals were fed daily a standard commercial diet ad libitum , while IF and ETI animals were fed every other day. In addition, the ET and ETI groups were submitted to a running protocol on a treadmill. After this period, functional fitness, nutritional parameters and blood glucose levels were analyzed. In addition to heart morphology, myocardial protein expression of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) was assessed by Western-blot. The results were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Student-Newman-Keuls test. The level of significance considered was 5%. RESULTS: Exercise training increased functional fitness in the ET and ETI groups and promoted cardiac fibrosis. The combination of intermittent fasting and exercise training resulted in a smaller area under the blood glucose curve and reduced cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area and interstitial collagen fraction in the ETI group compared to ET. ERK and JNK expression levels were similar among groups (p>0.05). Genotyping of the genus Paracoccidioides showed its diversity and geographical distribution. Four species constituting the Paracoccidioides brasiliensis complex and Paracoccidioides lutzii are etiological agents of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). However, there are no studies comparing the clinical and epidemiological aspects between PCM caused by the P. brasiliensis complex and by P. lutzii. Demographic and clinical data from 81 patients with PCM—confirmed by mycological and/or histopathological examination—from Mato Grosso do Sul state (Brazil) were studied. All patients underwent serology by immunodiffusion with antigens obtained from the P. brasiliensis complex (ExoPb and gp43) and Cell Free Antigens obtained from P.lutzii (CFAPl).The cases were classified regarding their serological profile into three groups: G1: PCM patients seropositive to ExoPb and/or gp43 and seronegative to CFAPl (n = 51), assumed to have PCM caused by P. brasiliensis complex; G2: PCM patients seronegative to gp43 and seropositive to CFAPl (n = 16), with PCM caused by P. lutzii; and G3: PCM patients seropositive to ExoPb or gp43 and seropositive to CFAPl (n = 14), with undetermined serological profile, was excluded from the analyses. The Fisher's exact test or the Mann-Whitney U test, and cluster analysis according to Ward’s method and Euclidean distance were used to analyze the results. Patients with serological profile suggestive of P. lutzii lived predominantly in municipalities in the Central and Southern regions of the state, while those with serological profile indicative of the P. brasiliensis complex were distributed throughout the state. No differences were found between the two groups regarding gender, age, schooling, rural work, clinical form, severity, organs involved, intensity of pulmonary involvement, degree of anemia, erythrocyte sedimentation rate values, and therapeutic response. PCM patients with serological profile suggestive of P. lutzii and PCM patients with serological profile indicative of P. brasiliensis complex showed the same clinical and radiological presentations., Author summary Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a disease caused by fungi living in the soil, which are inhaled mainly by rural workers from Latin America. These fungi are classified into the Paracoccidioides brasiliensis complex and Paracoccidioides lutzii. PCM may involve any organ and its treatment frequently results in fibrotic scars and functional limitations, which not rarely lead to early retirement. The mycological examination performed by routine laboratory tests cannot identify these species. However, the serological tests can suggest what species the etiological agent is, long as an antigen from both species is used. In order to determine whether there are differences in epidemiological aspects, clinical manifestations, severity, treatment response, and intensity of lung lesions according to the species involved, we compared 51 patients with serological profile suggestive of PCM caused by P. brasiliensis complex with 16 others caused by P. lutzii. Our results showed no differences between these species related to the parameters evaluated. Nevertheless, other clinical variables should be evaluated to detect differences regarding species. This study reinforces the importance of using antigens from both species for serological tests in PCM diagnosis, determination of severity, treatment follow-up and control of cure.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Clinic of the University Hospital, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Thirty-two PCM patients considered clinically and immunologically cured were included: 16 with laryngeal involvement during the active phase of the disease (laryngeal PCM group) and 16 without laryngeal involvement (control group). They were submitted to structured interview, otorhinolaryngology examination, videolaryngoscopy, videoendoscopic swallowing study, completed two questionnaires for voice self-assessment - Voice-related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) and Voice Handicap Index (VHI) - and were asked to score their voices on a scale from zero to 10 (self-assessment of vocal quality). Results: Dysphonia was present in 50% of the cases. Patients with laryngeal PCM presented worse voice-related quality of life scores on the V-RQOL and poorer vocal quality self-assessment than the control group. No significant differences in the VHI were found between the groups. None of the participants developed dysphagic sequelae, although some minor changes were observed on videoendoscopic examination. Conclusion: There were no dysphagia complaints and only a few mild changes were found on the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, suggesting that this evaluation should be performed only in specific cases. Patients with laryngeal involvement presented worse V-RQOL and self-assessment voice quality. This study contributes to the current knowledge of the functional assessment of the larynx affected by PCM and the impact of dysphonia on quality of life.
