Background To investigate the effectiveness of technology-enhanced teaching and assessment methods of undergraduate preclinical skills in comparison to conventional methods. Methods A comprehensive search strategy was implemented using both manual and electronic search methods, including PubMed, Wiley, ScienceDirect, SCOPUS, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The search and selection of articles that met the inclusion criteria were carried out in duplicates. A Cochrane data extraction form for RCTs was used to extract the relevant information from all included articles. Risk of bias of all included articles was assessed independently by two authors using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results A total of 19 randomized controlled clinical trials met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The majority of the studies included in this review have a high risk of bias mainly due to incomplete data, lack of blinding of the examiners, and due to other biases, such as small sample sizes, not accounting for additional hours of training, and the lack of calibration of examiners grading the preparations. Conflicting results were reported in the included studies with regards to whether there were differences between the intervention and control groups in the outcome measure of quality of students’ performance. A meta-analysis could not be done for this study due to the heterogeneity among the included studies. Conclusions Technology-enhanced teaching and assessment tools used in preclinical skills training of undergraduate dental students have the potential to improve students’ performance. However, due to the conflicting outcomes reported in the 19 studies included in this systematic review and their high risk of bias, better quality studies are required to find a definitive answer to the research question of this systematic review.

Evaluating students’ prior knowledge, particularly in higher education, has been a difficult task due to lack of any known reliable technique. This paper describes a research that involved a technology-enhanced approach for collecting prior knowledge data and presented those through visual narratives. The use of visual narratives is new in the research within engineering discipline, particularly in Computing. The study took place at a British university where forty five Computing students participated in the data collection process. The students were asked questions about their concepts around certain topics, academic interests, and assessment preferences. Data were collected using an online audience reply and analysis tool, Mentimeter, which also generated real time visuals, such as word clouds and graphs, based on the student responses. Several narratives were composed upon the findings depicted through the visuals. The key contribution of the research is a unique prior knowledge data analysis procedure which is convenient and effective in deciding pedagogic principles.

This project investigated student engagement in technology-enhanced learning. The main research question of this mixed-method study is: “How can instructors use flipped classroom pedagogy in blended and online courses in business law to foster engagement and participation among diverse, non-law students in an upper year B.Comm course?” The study explored the effects of redesigning a traditional lecture course to a flipped class.

Effective video recordings are the result of meticulous planning. The instructors will discuss how to best prepare for a recording, including storyboarding the finished product. The instructors will show resources for locating B-roll footage and background audio that complies with copyright restrictions. Using the editing tools of YouTube, attendees will learn the basics of combining clips from different recordings and incorporating audio. The instructors will demonstrate how to connect YouTube with Blackboard and how to ensure compliance with accessibility standards. This session is designed to introduce the use of 3D printing in a mathematics or science classroom to those with little or no experience with the technology. It will be a hands-on introduction to design of models using two STEM-focused software packages: Mathematica and OpenSCAD. The audience will come away with a knowledge of the entire progression of 3D printing from an in-class design to the technical aspects of printing. The presentation is based on group-based lab materials created for the calculus classroom (funded by a 4-VA innovation grant). This project demonstrates how inquiry-based approaches can be employed to enhance student learning using a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics). The session will start with a 30-minute lecture, including a demonstration of 3D printing, a review of the types of scientific models available publicly, a discussion of some of the classroom models we have designed, and a summary of the labs given in the calculus classroom. The use of multimedia in K-12 and higher education is expanding. This presentation will discuss the use of Content Acquisition Podcasts (CAPs) for providing accessible professional development in evidence-based practices (EBPs) for current and prospective teachers as well as the further use of CAPs in K-12 classrooms. CAPs are multimedia-based instructional vignettes that deliver instruction for any topic, created using Mayer's 12 effective instructional design principles (Mayer, 2009). Only essential information is presented in CAPs, excluding any irrelevant or extraneous information. All text, images, as well as human and engaging narration used in CAPs are aligned and presented in close proximity. Explicit cues are used to signal the important information, so that the text on the screen highlights the importance of the presented information. CAPs provide multiple practice opportunities for the content and can be accessible for students at any time, not just during class. Sample CAPs have been created in Microsoft PowerPoint using the built-in narration feature and can be found at www.SPEDIntro.com. While the examples provided are all in the area of special education, CAPs can be created and used in absolutely any discipline. Universal Design for Learning is the scientifically valid framework for developing educational practices that provides flexibility in how information is presented, in the ways students respond or demonstrate knowledge and skills, and in the ways students engage in learning. Instructors who adopt UDL principles in their teaching can reduce barriers and support all students regardless of their abilities, needs, and learning preferences. This presentation will focus on ways to establishing UDL environments in higher education courses through "ready-mades," hi-tech platforms with low-tech learning curves, while simultaneously energizing learning and nurturing collaborations. Attendees will learn to provide three principles of UDL, which include multiple means of: • Representation: Screenchomp, Jing, Video presentations • Action and expression: Voki, Glogster, Popplet, • Engagement: Dipity timeline, Voice Thread, PrimaryPad Such ready-mades also energize collaboration between students. Research suggests that an increase in learner mobility across formal and informal jurisdictions is a positive response to an integrated global economy and workforce. To facilitate ebbs and flows of maintaining a mobile global workforce, the literature suggests that engineering education should promote methodology and learning mechanisms that personalize accountability of mobile learners' content knowledge across jurisdictions. In addition, data from the literature shows that mobile or cyber-learning is generating massive amounts of data which could inform engineering educators in their response to a mobile and constantly changing workforce. This paper reviews data from a pilot study of Technology-Enhanced Autonomous Learning Environment (TEALE). TEALE is a framework for mobile learning environments that afford accountability of personalized evidence-based content across learning jurisdictions. Prelimary data from this third pilot report suggests that TEALE promotes accountability of content knowledge across learning jurisdictions: both among formal disciplines in the academy, as well as between the academy, informal learning and workplace requirements. However, the data also suggests that seamless mobility across these academic and social jurisdictions involves issues far beyond technology. These issues, which include adjudicating relevance and value among academic cultures, incentives for motivation, authority and autonomy should be accounted for when using TEALE. Attention to these issues could prevent engineering educators from viewing potential opportunities for inter-jurisdictional collaborations as encroachments and avert the specter of unintended social-dramas.
