The paper examines connections between ontology and finance. The ontological debates concerning the role of finance are examined between two opposing schools of thought that can be labelled, very broadly, ‘instrumentalist’ and ‘realist’(analytic-interpretivist). These two schools of thought have had momentous repercussions in understanding what is a good society. Each school defines Nature in particular ways which can be explored using ontology and philosophical insight. Our theoretical investigation aims to accommodate Nature in community financial deliberations. A positive role for governmentis advocated to finance environmental infrastructure initiatives. For example, precautionary strategies to address climate change must be funded. New roles for finance and government are proposed to align human relationships with Nature. Environmental precautionary principles must be developed in conjunction with finance theory to maintain decent standards of living for all. Reliance on impersonal market forces will not be enough to save the planet given the power of some over the many in the neoliberal arena. Refereed/Peer-reviewed

Purpose The aim of this work was to investigate the diagnostic value of the DIR sequence at 3T MR imaging operating in the evaluation of cortical development anomalies. Methods We studied 40 patients, with a previous diagnosis of cortical dysplasia, by FLAIR-3D, DIR, FSE T2 and MPR-GE T1 sequences at 3T MRI. Two independent observers evaluated, for each sequence and lesion, some semiological aspects (cortical thickness, cortical signal intensity, white-gray matter blurring, subcortical white matter intensity). We made also a quantitative evaluation of the cortical signal intensity in lesion site, drawing a ROI on each MRI sequences and comparing them to the correspondent normal contralateral cortical area. Results We identified 44 cortical development anomalies. Qualitative analyses showed a high level of agreement between the observers concerning DIR potentialities in detecting and characterizing the cortical development disorders. Particularly DIR sequence was able to demonstrate the blurring and the subcortical white matter anomalies. The quantitative analyses didn’t show a significant difference between DIR and traditional sequences in the evaluation of the cortical signal intensity. Conclusion 3T MRI-DIR sequence is a useful and better suitable sequence compared to the traditional sequences in the characterization of some semiological aspects of the cortical development disorders, particularly blurring and subcortical white matter hyperintensity.

Background: Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF) is a modern circular external fixator that, using a virtual hinge, is able to correct six axis deformities simultaneously. Despite the growing popularity of this method, few reports exist about its use in children and adolescents. To evaluate the effectiveness of TSF in correcting multiplanar deformities in patients with open physis, we reviewed the results of treatment in children who had at least two planes deformities of lower limbs. Methods: Over a period of 8 years, we treated 51 patients, 40 boys, 11 girls, with a mean age of 12.4 years (range, 2-16 years). All patients had open physis at the time of the TSF application. All patients had at least two deformities (angular and/or rotational). Fifty-five osteotomies (11 femoral, 44 tibial) were performed. Patients were divided into four groups: 13 with post-traumatic malunions, 18 with tibia vara, six with rickets, and 14 with miscellaneous deformities. Correction goal was determined as correction of deformities to population-average parameters of the lower limbs in frontal and sagittal views and normal mechanical axis deviation. Results: Correction goal was achieved in all except one patient; four patients had recurrence of deformities post-operatively and were re-operated. Most common complications were pin tract infection (20 patients), delayed union (2), regenerate translation (1), post-removal femoral fractures (2), knee subluxation (1), nonunion (1), and one patient developed chronic osteomyelitis secondary to deep pin tract infection. Conclusion: TSF allowed accurate correction of complex limb deformities in children and adolescents with relatively few serious complications. Level of Evidence: Level IV. Case series.

Tracer dispersion is studied experimentally in periodic or disordered arrays of beads in a capillary tube. Dispersion is measured from light absorption variations near the outlet following a steplike injection of dye at the inlet. Visualizations using dye and pure glycerol are also performed in similar geometries. Taylor dispersion is dominant both in an empty tube and for a periodic array of beads: the dispersivity $l\_d$ increases with the P\'eclet number $Pe$ respectively as $Pe$ and $Pe^{0.82}$ and is larger by a factor of 8 in the second case. In a disordered packing of smaller beads (1/3 of the tube diameter) geometrical dispersion associated to the disorder of the flow field is dominant with a constant value of $l\_d$ reached at high P\'eclet numbers. The minimum dispersivity is slightly higher than in homogeneous nonconsolidated packings of small grains, likely due heterogeneities resulting from wall effects. In a disordered packing with the same beads as in the periodic configuration, $l\_d$ is up to 20 times lower than in the latter and varies as $Pe^\alpha$ with $\alpha = 0.5$ or $= 0.69$ (depending on the fluid viscosity). International audience; To obtain Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), we would like to study the worst-case electromagnetic field-induced voltages at the ends of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) traces. With increasing frequencies, modelling these traces as electrically short no longer suffices. Accurate long line models exist, but are too complicated to easily induce the worst case. Therefore, we need a simple analytical model. In this article, we predict the terminal voltages of an electrically long, two-wire transmission line with characteristic loads in vacuum, excited by a linearly polarised plane wave. The model consists of a short line model (one Taylor cell) with an intuitive correction factor for long line effects: the modified Taylor cell. We then adapt the model to the case of a PCB trace above a ground plane, illuminated by a grazing, vertically polarised wave. For this case, we prove that end-fire illumination constitutes the worst case. We derive the worst-case envelope and try to falsify it by measurement in a Gigahertz Transverse Electromagnetic (GTEM) cell.

During the course of the previous century, authors from various genres attempted to clear the name of Judas Iscariot, or alternatively, tried to explain why he betrayed Jesus Christ. One of the most ambitious attempts at this was that of the wellknown British-American author Taylor Caldwell in her book called 'I, Judas‟ (1977). The strategy supporting Caldwell‟s partial exculpation of Judas is analysed against the background of various early descriptions of Judas. The conclusion is that Caldwell's excessively fertile literary imagination, combined with the encroachment of postbible traditions in this apparent first-person narrative of the accused disciple undermines the credibility of her alternative perception of Judas.

Circular external fixators in children are widely used for limb lengthening, deformity correction and the treatment of fractures. We report a case of successful management of hypertension in a 13-year-old treated with a Taylor spatial frame after a road traffic accident and a tibial fracture. A heightened awareness of the association of hypertension and external fixators is required to improve patient outcomes. Outcomes are improved by prompt diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, preventing hypertensive end-organ damage, choice of an appropriate first line antihypertensive treatment, and not subjecting children to invasive investigations looking for an alternative secondary cause of hypertension. Purpose: Cortical specimens from six patients operated on for drug-resistant epilepsy diagnosed as Taylor's type focal cortical dysplasia were submitted to neuropathological and immunohistochemical studies.Methods: All patients were submitted to presurgical investigations including clinical and neuropsychological evaluations, EEG/video telemetry of ictal and interictal events, magnetic resonance imaging, and ictal and interictal single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Recordings from electrocorticography (ECoG) were obtained in four cases and from subdural electrode implantation in two. Postsurgical follow-up was assessed according to Engel's score. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was processed for parvalbumin (PV), calbindin D28-K (CB), nonphosphorylated neurofilaments (SMI-311), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in all cases.Results: We found continuous/quasi-continuous spikes and sharp-wave patterns in three cases and frequent repetitive bursting of polyspikes and ECoG seizures in two cases. Every patient showed cortical dyslamination, abnormal and giant neurons, and balloon cells. GFAP immunoreactivity was found in astrocytes and some balloon cells that were less intensely stained. Nonphosphorylated neurofilaments SMI-311 immunoreactivity was found in normal and giant neurons and in some balloon cells, making visible thin neuropils. PV immunoreactivity was present in normal interneurons and in fibers in layers IV-V. PV-negative balloon cells were surrounded by abundant PV-positive fibers. CB immunoreactivity was found mostly in interneurons in layers II-III.Conclusions: Our research is inconclusive. More cases should be investigated, and we must draw more accurate anatomic correlations between the ECoG recordings and surgical specimens studied with IHC.
