TRAINING PROVIDED BY EMPLOYERS IN A REPRESENTATIVE INDUSTRIAL COMMUNITY WAS STUDIED TO HELP EDUCATORS AND EMPLOYERS PLAN FOR ADEQUATE PREPARATION OF YOUTH FOR EMPLOYMENT. STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED WITH 210 EMPLOYERS OF 10 OR MORE PERSONS. QUESTIONNAIRES WERE SENT TO EMPLOYERS OF FEWER THAN 10 PERSONS. AS A RESULT, DATA WERE GATHERED ON ABOUT 95 PERCENT OF THE EMPLOYMENT IN THE AREA. ONLY 16 PERCENT OF THE EMPLOYERS PLANNED ON-THE-JOB TRAINING, BUT NEARLY 40 PERCENT HAD SOME ORIENTATION TRAINING AND ONE FOURTH PROVIDED SAFETY TRAINING. ONE FOURTH PROVIDED AWAY-FROM-THE-JOB-TRAINING, AVERAGING 8 HOURS PER EMPLOYEE PER YEAR, MOSTLY ON COMPANY PREMISES. EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS HAD SOME CRITICISM OF JOB APPLICANTS' SCHOOL PREPARATION. SINCE MODERN EQUIPMENT NECESSITATES EXTENSIVE AWAY-FROM-THE-JOB-TRAINING, MORE COOPERATION BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND EMPLOYERS IS NECESSARY. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT (1) ALTHOUGH ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING COULD BE VERY EFFECTIVE, PROVISION FOR APPRENTICESHIPS AND ON-THE-JOB-TRAINING WAS TOO LIMITED, (2) TRAINING WITHIN AN ORGANIZATION WAS DEPENDENT ON THE PRESENCE OF INDIVIDUALS THERE WHO BELIEVED IN THE VALUE OF PLANNED TRAINING, AND (3) EMPLOYERS EXPECTED EDUCATORS TO TAKE THE LEAD IN DEVELOPING BETTER COMMUNICATION AND MORE COOPERATION. Background Opioid misuse continues to be a major concern in the United States, affecting both adults and adolescents. Unfortunately, even legitimate prescription opioid misuse in adolescence increases the risk for misuse later in life. Although adolescence is a critical period for learning, little is known about adolescents’ preferences for opioid safety education. One potential avenue for prescription opioid education is the use of serious games. Serious games can result in better health outcomes and understanding for adolescents and allow them to safely experience real-life scenarios. However, few studies have examined the use of serious games for adolescent opioid education. Objective This study explored adolescents’ preferences for prescription opioid education and design of a serious game focused on opioid safety education. Methods A focus group guide was adapted from 2 statewide surveys about participants’ perspectives on opioids. Recruitment packets with consent documents and an introduction to the study were sent home to eligible students. Ten focus groups were conducted with 68 middle and high school students in Wisconsin. Adolescents were asked to discuss their preferences for prescription opioid safety education and to design a serious game to educate teens about opioid safety. Focus groups were audio-recorded, professionally transcribed, and underwent content and thematic analyses using NVivo 12 software. Results Three preferred approaches for opioid safety education were identified, including the use of presentations, videos and websites, and serious games. Adolescents desired short presentations delivering personal stories to smaller audiences. They preferred websites and brief, engaging videos from reliable sources because of ease of access. Adolescents also preferred serious games for opioid education that were realistic and relatable. Conclusion When educating adolescents on prescription opioids, the use of presentations, particularly personal stories, brief and engaging websites and videos, or serious games with realistic and relatable scenarios should be incorporated.

Background A laboratory where chemicals are handled can be considered a hazardous environment and hence prudent practices should be strictly enforced. If not, deadly accidents and incidents could occur due to lack of safety practices and poor safety culture. The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing safety culture and propose potential recommendations to enhance the level of safety education in the chemical laboratories in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Methods A survey questionnaire was administered among the laboratory supervisors of the chemical laboratories in the Western Province of Sri Lanka in 2019. Results Even though 80 surveys were distributed among prospective participants, only 46 surveys were submitted which is 58% of the response rate. Most of the individuals who participated in the survey were females below 35 years old and approximately 96% of the of the participants had at least one year of working experience in the same laboratory setting. The majority considered safety as an important factor that requires further improvements with third-party safety inspections, however, 54% of the respondents mentioned that those inspections were conducted by the employees from their laboratory. Conclusion From the study, it has been discovered that employees have knowledge on safety culture to a certain extent. Significant percentage (83%) of participants believed that further safety measures are required for a safer laboratory. However, the study revealed that attitudes of some employees should be changed to have a better safety culture. Hence authors would like to suggest having annual training sessions and well formulated safety policies to improve the safety culture.

In light of extended stay-at-home periods during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, recent societal trends have revealed an increased use of online media to remain connected. Simultaneously, interests in at-home cooking and baking, particularly of "comfort foods" have increased. Because flour is a crucial component in many of these products, we analyze how the U.S. public, in social and online media spaces, references "flour" and its use. We also quantify the share of media mentions about flour that are devoted to flour-related food safety risks and/or risk mitigation. It was found that the volume of mentions about flour and its use fluctuate seasonally, often increasing ahead of the winter holiday season (November to December). Further, the volume of interest rapidly increased in March 2020 when stay-at-home orders were issued. The share of media devoted to flour-related food safety risks or associated illness was extremely small but generally corresponded with flour recall announcements or other public risk communications. Overall, the interest in flour and its use remains seasonal and predictably related to societal trends, such as increased baking at home during the holidays or 2020 stay-at-home orders. However, awareness of flour-related food safety risks seems largely absent on the basis of online media data collection and analysis, except in immediate reactions to flour recalls. This study suggests that more flour safety education programs may be desired to support consumers' informed decision making.

Any systems can be expressed by and connected with information. For the safety education system, doing so is essentially a process of safety information dissemination and cognition. Therefore, information is the core of the safety education system. At present, the key factors affecting the effectiveness of safety education are safety demand analysis information, the dissemination and cognitive processes of safety information and information feedback. Research on the construction of a framework model for safety education under the guidance of information flow clears and classifies information-related elements of the safety education process. Therefore, it is conducive to the construction of a safety education system to improve its management level and, through the rational use of information technology, to improve the conversion rate of safety information into safety behaviour. Based on a systematic review and comparison of the existing research perspectives on safety education and information-flow-based safety education (IFSE), this paper analyses the reasons why we need a new perspective on safety education. We introduce information flow into the safety education framework model. The fundamental and expanding elements of safety education propagation are examined and deduced based on information theory. Combined with the connotations of safety education and information flow, this paper analyses the implementation steps of IFSE and applies them to the safety education of new employees in metal and nonmetal mines. In the micro-design, virtual reality technology is used to integrate safety education content and information technology. A new perspective on safety education is created; then, the framework model of IFSE, its implementation steps and models of the processing and utilization processes of safety education are constructed. IFSE is a new perspective for realizing safety education in practice, and the framework model of IFSE provides rigorous theoretical knowledge. Of course, to improve IFSE in practice, more scientific and detailed evaluation methods need to be introduced. This paper is helpful for guiding the safety education theory research from “trivializes situated” to “systematic” and for guiding the design, implementation, assessment and optimization of the safety education practice.

Recently, as the frequency of disasters and accidents have increased sharply, safety experience education is more important than ever in order to protect the lives of not only oneself but also others in unexpected situations. Accordingly, there is a growing need for safety education that enables people to quickly respond and cope with sudden accidents and disasters. Currently, there are seven large-scale safety experience centers in Korea, and as of 2003, the construction of the first civil safety experience center in Korea was started in Gwangnaru, Seoul and many progresses have been made in the field of safety experience and safety experience education to date. Therefore, in this research, we tried to investigate and analyze the actual operation status of seven large-scale safety experience centers to derive six problems. Based on problems, this study tried to present six improvement strategies for operating the safety experience center efficiently.

Purpose Oil and gas industries play a major role for the growth of world economy, and drilling operation is considered as most important and hazardous procedure at the same time for oil and gas drilling crew because of the lack of effectual and user-friendly safety and health teaching and learning aids with updated knowledge and training capability. According to the previous studies, there is an urgent industrial need for user interactive technological aid for enhancing the teaching and learning of oil and gas drilling crew and safety officials at onshore and offshore drilling domains to fulfill the requirements of fourth industrial and educational revolutions. Therefore, this proposed virtual reality (VR)-based Hazard Free Operation (HAZFO Expert 2.0) teaching and learning aid to reduce the workplace risk and hazards to enhance the vestibule and experiential learning performance of oil and gas drilling process at Pakistani drilling industries. Design/methodology/approach In this proposed product based study for interactive teaching and learning application for industry, sequential explanatory research design will be adopted to prevent the accidents according to the modern technologies in this era of IR 4.0. Whereas, for the development of VR-based educational aid for Pakistani oil and gas industries, Autodesk 3ds Max, visual studio and MySQL software’s will be used. Findings This new concept of VR-based interactive educational aid (HAZFO Expert 2.0) for accident prevention at oil and gas drilling industries will be based on potential hazards and their suitable controlling measures for onshore and offshore drilling sites. Practical implications VR-based interactive educational aid for oil and gas workforce will facilitate the health and safety professionals for the elimination of potential hazards associated with oil and gas drilling activities to the next level of identification of hazards which has been identified in HAZFO Expert 1.0 at onshore and offshore drilling sites. Originality/value This proposed VR-based interactive educational aid for safe drilling process will be the first visual teaching and e-learning technology which covers all onshore and offshore drilling operations in Pakistani oil and gas industries and provides effective hazard controlling strategies to overcome challenging industrial hazards.

In-person safety programs for pre-kindergarten children were not able to go on in their usual way during the summer of 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While some communities opted to cancel the programs, one organization in Northwest Ohio chose to reformat it, knowing that this education is a critical introduction to lifelong safety habits. Through social media, video-taped education from community safety professionals, and activity packets given to registrants, "Safety City" was able to go on. The new format incorporated all of the childhood safety topics normally presented in the live version of the program. The efforts described here indicate that it is feasible to alter presentation formats from in-person to virtual to connect even young children with important education. As such, similar programs needing to make this transition while the world continues to adjust to pandemic precautions may benefit from understanding the strengths, limitations, and insights from the process.

Objective: Sleep safety is an important strategy to reduce sleep-related infant mortality in infants aged 0-12 months. Nurses, who have a role in the education of families, should raise their awareness and practise providing sleep safety recommendations during student years. This study aimed to determine the effect of sleep safety education given to nursing interns on their knowledge level. Materials and Methods: This randomised controlled trial included students attending at the nursing department of a university and enrolled in the intern practice course. Students were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received training on sleep safety in infants, whereas the control group was not trained. Data were collected using the introductory characteristics form and sleep safety information form on infants. Results: Most of the students in both groups did not receive training on sleep safety. Although the majority of the students cared for infants during clinical and field practice courses, very few students imparted sleep safety training to parents. No statistically significant difference was found between the knowledge scores of both groups before training (p0.05). Conclusion: It was found that students did not have adequate knowledge about sleep safety in infants. Sleep safety training increased the knowledge level of students in the experimental group.

This study derived problems arising from the field application of “Seven Standards for School Safety Education” a representative policy of schools after the Sewol ferry sinking accident. As a result, the Seven Standard was analyzed that the basic law function of the school(School Safety Acts) needed to be strengthened to serve as the basic laws for school safety. Based on the students’ perceptions, the safety education of the school did not sufficiently meet the demands of students since the necessity was relatively higher than the satisfaction level of safety education. Teachers generally agreed with the purpose of the Seven Standards, they were passive in the implementation of education and showed negative tendency to administrative works related to safety education, so there is need to improve internal and external factors that hinder teachers implementation of safety education. In terms of policy execution, the Ministry of Education needs to make efforts to establish a policy to expand the expertise of the teachers in charge of safety education and to establish a school safety education system that supports the contents of the seven standards of education in cooperation with local related organizations and civic groups.

The Uganda Road Accident Reduction Network Organisation (URRENO) is a non-profit, non-government organisation (NGO) mandated in 1997. From a modest pilot project funded by the World Bank in 2003, it has become a leader in the development, implementation and advocacy for road safety education in primary schools across Uganda. Through URRENO efforts, the pilot program was adopted as the national curriculum and was shown to improve students’ road safety skills and behaviours and reduce their involvement in crashes from 15% to 5%. Many other related worthwhile initiatives followed, including: improvements in pedestrian facilities; integrated road safety publicity and enforcement campaigns; and expansion of road safety NGOs to supplement Government efforts. Lessons learned of value for like organisations include: striving to collect and analyse data to attain a project evidence base; building strong partnerships with influential individuals, community groups, businesses and Government stakeholders; adopting participatory approaches in which stakeholders and beneficiaries play significant roles in project implementation; and building capacities and empowering beneficiaries. URRENO continues in its efforts to strengthen and further roll-out the road safety education curriculum across Uganda, following evidence that transfers of trained teachers has contributed to decayed expertise and attention to road safety, particularly among schools in rural areas. URRENO will continue to strive to empower young people to learn and strengthen their capacity in road safety, to grow out of dependence and become independent safe road users.

BackgroundSurgeons frequently care for children who have sustained gunshot wounds (GSWs). However, firearm safety education is not a focus in general surgery training. We hypothesised that firearm safety discussions do not routinely take place when children present to a trauma centre with a GSW.MethodA retrospective review of patients ResultsA total of 226 patients with GSWs were identified, 22% were unintentional and 63% were assault. Firearm safety discussions took place in 10 cases (4.4%). Firearm safety discussions were more likely to occur after unintentional injuries compared with other mechanisms (16.0% vs 1.3%, pConclusionAt a paediatric trauma centre, firearm safety discussions occurred in 4.4% of cases of children presenting with a GSW. There is a significant room for improvement in providing safety education interventions.

The relationship between the police and communities can be difficult inethnically divided societies, especially if membership of the police forceis largely drawn from one community. This situation pertained in NorthernIreland, which has separate schools for different religious communities.Despite a major reform of the police after the signing of the GoodFriday Agreement (1998), the relationship between the police and theCatholic minority remained difficult and, in particular, the police foundit difficult to engage with pupils in some Catholic schools. An educationinitiative, called Shared Education, was launched in 2006 to support thepeace process by encouraging collaborative partnership between Protestantand Catholic schools. This paper examines a school partnership inNorthern Ireland in which statutory and non-statutory organisations, includingthe Police Service in Northern Ireland, were involved. The paperexamines how the relationship between the police and the schools wasenabled by the collaborative partnership: in particular, it allowed the policeto provide information and advice to parents on internet safety andcyber-bullying to parents with whom it would otherwise have been verydifficult to engage

It has been more than 10 years since the concept of nanotechnology safety (nano-safety) was first proposed and detailed by the Texas State University Nanomaterials Application Center director. The concept of nano-safety has developed in educational efforts that have increased the awareness and competence of graduating students. Much dissemination along multiple paths still needs to be done. This dissemination includes education of incumbent workers as well as students. This article provides a short overview of the need for training in nanosafety followed by a section on the initial efforts to educate students and employees in the safe handling and use of nanomaterials. The challenge that remains is how to address the potential impact of the rapid development of new materials in the field of nanotechnology. Finally, some needed investigations are presented.

Objectives The purpose of this study was to develop a procedure to investigate the occurrence, character and causes of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging incidents. Methods A semi-structured questionnaire was developed containing details such as safety zones, examination complexity, staff MR knowledge, staff categories, and implementation of EU directive 2013/35. We focused on formally reported incidents that had occurred during 2014–2019, and unreported incidents during one year. Thirteen clinical MR units were visited, and the managing radiographer was interviewed. Open questions were analysed using conventionally adopted content analysis. Results Thirty-seven written reports for 5 years and an additional 12 oral reports for 1 year were analysed. Only 38% of the incidents were reported formally. Some of these incidents were catastrophic. Negative correlations were observed between the number of annual incidents (per scanner) and staff MR knowledge (Spearman’s rho − 0.41, p < 0.05) as well as the number of MR physicists per scanner (− 0.48, p < 0.05). It was notable that only half of the sites had implemented the EU directive. Quotes like ‘Burns are to be expected in MR’ and not even knowing the name of the incident reporting system suggested an inadequate safety culture. Finally, there was a desire among staff for MR safety education. Conclusions MR-related incidents were greatly underreported, and some incidents could have had catastrophic outcomes. There is a great desire among radiographers to enhance the safety culture, but to achieve this, much more accessible education is required, as well as focused involvement of the management of the operations. Key Points • Only one in three magnetic resonance–related incidents were reported. • Several magnetic resonance incidents could have led to catastrophic consequences. • Much increased knowledge about magnetic resonance safety is needed by radiologists and radiographers.

Foi desenvolvido usando o framework DPE (Design, Play, Experience); e validado pelas metodologias LORI (Learning Objects Review Instrument) e EgameFlow, envolvendo 46 crianças e 3 pedagogas. Em etapa pós-avaliação, foi implementada uma versão mobile, com exploração de áudio para os textos de composição do “Anjos Azuis”, comandos orientados a touch screen e plays automáticos, a fim de melhorar a acessibilidade para alunos não alfabetizados. Hoje o “Anjos Azuis” instrumentaliza iniciativa governamental municipal de educação para segurança pública.

Surgically treated hydrocephalus patients are frequently imaged with head computed tomography (CT), and risk/benefit communication with families is inconsistent and unknown. We aimed to educate patients and caregivers about radiation safety in CT and explore their communication preferences. We conducted a pediatric CT radiation safety and diagnostic imaging educational workshop for patients and caregivers at a national conference on hydrocephalus to characterize current practice and desired communication about CT imaging. Our workshop consisted of an interactive educational intervention with pre-/post-session surveys followed by feedback from participants. Our session included 34 participants (100% response rate for surveys) with 28 being parents of individuals with hydrocephalus. A total of 76% (n = 26) participants showed an increase in knowledge after the session (p 100 CT scans for shunt evaluation with the median being 25 scans (IQR 20). Caregivers desire and deserve to be empowered through education and social support, and continuously engaged through sharing decisions and co-designing care plans. The neurosurgical community is in an ideal position to collaborate with radiologists, primary care providers, and parents in the development and testing of credible, high-quality online and social media resources.

Burn injuries remain a significant cause of death and disability in the global south, with children amongst the most vulnerable. In South Africa, burns are a critical health and economic burden in densely populated and energy-impoverished communities. This study used secondary data on burn injuries from 19 health facilities to differentiate between risk for scalds and flame burns across three household energy sources (firewood, paraffin and electricity). The sample was 2 933 cases of child burn victims, with key analytical procedures being descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis. Results showed that 52% of burn injury admissions reported electricity as the household energy source used at the time of injury. Most burn injuries were scalds (85.3%), with infants and toddlers at greatest risk. The differentiation between wood and paraffin was associated with a threefold increase in scalds relative to flame burns, while that between paraffin and electricity indicated a sevenfold increase in scalds and nineteen times such an increase between wood and electricity. This was an indication of continued challenges for the country in addressing paediatric burns despite, and in the context of, the continued electrification of poor households. The study recommends improved regulation of electrical appliances used by low-income households, and targeted household safety education initiatives.Highlights • Study differentiated the risk for scalds versus flame burns across fuels. • Most burn injuries were scalds, with toddlers at greatest risk. • Electricity was associated with most scalds relative to wood and paraffin. • Regulation of simple electrical appliances and safety education is recommended.

Introduction MR-safety remains a concern among MR professionals. We aimed to evaluate the extent of MR-related incidents using a national database and a questionnaire among MR professionals and to identify possible predictors for MR-related incidents. Methods MR-related incidents reported to a national database from 2015 to 2017 were scrutinized. A national online survey focussing on MR safety and education was performed. Quantitative analyses, descriptive statistics and regression analyses were used. Results The database included 196, 97 and 100 direct MR-related incidents in 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively. Regarding the questionnaire, 208 MR professionals responded. Within the last year, 33% had been involved in an MR-related incident that was reported in the national database. At some time in their working life, 53% had been involved in an MR-related incident that was reported, but 25% had been involved in an incident that was not reported. The responses to the questionnaire reflected far more incidents than those reported to the database for all categories. Sixty-one percent of respondents indicated that external personnel in the MR environment are a safety risk. External personnel in the MR environment were found to be a predictor for reported and unreported MR-related incidents with odds ratio (OR) = 2.07; p = 0.033 and OR = 5.17; p = 0.0005 respectively. Conclusion There seems to be severe underreporting of MR-related incidents. External personnel in the MR-environment and scanning patients in anaesthesia were found to be predictors for both reported and unreported MR-related incidents. Regulations regarding the minimum required MR safety education of different groups of MR professionals and external personnel are recommended. Implications for practice Enforcing MR safety education and highlighting the importance of MR safety within hospital organisations would contribute to better patient and personnel safety.

Preventing chemical accidents by safe handling and management of hazardous materials is important because the accidents could have fatal impact on the human and the environment. Safety education for hazardous substance handlers, managers and supervisors has been legally supported in South Korea as part of the personnel management for effective prevention and response to accidents. However, the absence of standard guidelines and detailed contents raises the need for a standardized education system. In this study, based on the contents for each type of safety training for hazardous chemicals as specified in the Chemical Substance Control Act, we analyzed the current status of safety education on hazardous chemicals in South Korea and similar educational programs in other countries to derive the implications. The standard educational guidelines were developed based on the analysis of duty and roles, required competencies, and necessary skills for each educational target. A standardization plan was also proposed to establish a system and prepare standards for safety education on hazardous substances, including contents development and curriculum design integrated with required technologies.

In order to meet public expectation amid rising demand for safety caused by frequent safety-related accidents and the occurrence of expanding and complex disasters, the importance of safety education designed to help people develop abilities for survival from fire and disasters as well as for protecting both you and other people. This article aims to seek ways to promote safety education policies using standardized manuals and the Fire Safety Educator led by the Fire Fighting Department in charge of public safety on the front. Currently the South Korean government employ fire fighters using a standardized manual for national safety education and the Fire Safety Educator. It is essential to continue efforts to reinforce safety awareness across the nation. In addition, the government needs to provide assistance to continue developing and studying safety education and relevant practice programs that enables people to be familiar with the standardized manual guided by the Fire Safety Educator.

Coal mine accidents pose a serious threat to miners and the surrounding environment. Despite a recent downward trend in the numbers of major accidents and casualties in Chinese coal mining enterprises, accident reoccurrence remains an on-going issue for the industry. This paper aims to identify the root causes, namely, the characteristics of safety culture deficiencies driving typical coal accidents. Using the accident analysis pathway of the 24Model and the logical thought of Why Because Analysis (WBA), 67 typical major accidents (gas explosion, gas outburst, flooding and fire) are analysed to identify the deficiencies in safety culture based on the determinations of the safety culture dimension and statistics of recurrent accident patterns. The related elements and occurrence frequencies of the deficiencies in safety culture can be inferred as follows: ignored safety laws and regulations (frequency is 100 %), unrealized safety priority (100 %), limited role of functional departments (86.6 %), and insufficient attention to safety education for special operation personnel and mining workers (80.6 %), among others. These characteristics are not concerned with accident types, and the most prominent characteristics are manifested in four aspects: unrealized safety priority, flaws in management actions towards safety, passive safety compliance and participation of employees, and imperfect work conditions. Specifically, we emphasize the role of departments, safety communication, safety participation and supervision climate in influencing and improving the safety culture to further reduce industrial accidents.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of apartment residents’ safety education satisfaction and the application of fire protection plans on fire safety awareness. The analysis results are as follows. First, the low levels of satisfaction with safety education content had a negative effect on anxiety about fire safety. This means that apartment residents’ low levels of interest or participation in education affected their safety awareness, which prevented them from securing safety from fire. It is necessary for control staff to have a positive impact on their educational satisfaction via the learning support information system, among others, in order to create a satisfying education and safety culture. Second, competence in the execution of firefighting plans had a positive effect on fire safety awareness. These results indicate that apartment residents do not have the opportunity to access the education and training necessary for safety, nor the legal responsibility to complete mandatory safety education, which leads to their lack of safety awareness. Therefore, the control staff need to raise awareness of fire safety and the importance of participating in safety education among apartment residents by strengthening and activating the execution of firefighting plans in order to ensure safe living. Third, the competency of the firefighting plans moderated the effects of apartment residents' educational satisfaction on their awareness of fire safety.

BACKGROUND According to a survey of the working population of women by industry, service industries accounted for the majority. OBJECTIVE The effects of female worker's salary and self-rated health on safety education and compliance in three sectors of the service industry are reported. METHODS A sample of 700 women service workers were surveyed; their age, work experience, salary, self-rated health, safety educational participation, and compliance were recorded. RESULTS The salary of female service workers was directly related to safety educational participation and compliance, as well as the health levels they reported. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that an increase in the self-rated health and salary of female workers can contribute to enhancing safety educational participation and compliance. Development of educational programs in prevention and safety compliance is expected to contribute to the prevention of industrial accidents in the service sector.

According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety in 2015 from the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic injuries claim more than 1.25 million lives each year, and they are the leading cause of death among young people aged between 15 and 29 years old. Road traffic fatalities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) account for 4.7% of all mortalities and have plateaued over the last decade at 22–25 per 100,000 people. According to the Ministry of Interior (MOI) and Police department, 460,488 traffic accidents occurring on the roads in the KSA leading to 7489 deaths and 33,139 injuries, have recorded during 2017 (1438 H) The improvement of drivers’ behavior through education, training, appropriate driver licensing and enforcement is recognized as a kernel in enhancing traffic and transport safety in the National Transportation Strategy. Moreover, it is accepted as an urgent issue to implement and strengthen institutional frameworks and capacities as well as targeted activities in the area of enforcement, engineering, education and emergency response on the national level. However, it is difficult to find any well-organized school traffic safety education material in KSA. For this reason, the objective of this paper was to propose a new traffic safety education material for children (under 13 years old) in KSA. Firstly, traffic safety regulations, policies and traffic safety education programs were reviewed and examined in the school of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Korea, Japan, and Sweden. Then the topics of the new traffic safety education material needed for children who will be the protagonists in KSA were chosen. In this new traffic safety education material, the utilization of various visual aids has been emphasized on for children’s better understanding such as cartoons, graphics, and pictures in the Arabic Language. Finally, questionnaire surveys were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the new material. It is expected that this research became an ignition in the KSA to respond to the global trend of intensive attention to traffic safety. The new material is expected to be actively used mainly in schools and at homes to correct the misbehaviors of road users, to decrease the mortality and morbidity from road traffic accidents, and ultimately to cut off both direct and indirect social costs caused by road traffic accidents in the KSA.

Peer trainers from across the country, who worked on road crews, in hospitals, in prisons, and in chemical facilities, themselves brought positive safety and health changes to their workplaces. Through advanced instruction, at the International Chemical Workers Union Council (ICWUC) Center for Worker Health and Safety Education (the Center), they not only learned how to be health and safety instructors, but they also became change agents by responding to questions on the shop floor and taking actions to improve safety and health for themselves and for their fellow workers.

This paper summarizes an exploratory study probing perspectives of pesticide applicators and educators regarding pesticide licensing and safety training in Idaho. The purpose of the study was to identify lines of inquiry concerning critical learning components for pesticide worker safety. Information was gathered about training practices for pesticide applicators. Adult learning theory provided a foundation for a priori themes combined with grounded theory to explore emergent concepts and categories. Four categories relevant to pesticide applicator safety training emerged from the literature review and interviews: knowledge and learning, worker practices, worker beliefs and attitudes, and the work environment. Understanding why workers take risks is central to developing effective safety training. Providing workers with access to research-based information may reduce risk. Narrative may play an important part in developing educational curriculum. There is a need to develop additional safety education programming that is designed for this specific audience.
