Tularemia is a bacterial zoonosis which is commonly transmitted through tick or insect bites or contact with meat of infected animals. We report the case of a 36-year-old man who developed fever, chills, headaches, and a painful, unilateral, inguinal lymphadenopathy with a red-livid skin discoloration after an insect bite on his abdomen. Ulceroglandular tularemia was diagnosed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and serology. Treatment with doxycycline for 21 days resulted in an excellent outcome.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex disorder that affects 3-5% of all pregnancies and is a leading cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. To date, the heterogeneity of clinical presentation, disease severity and outcomes have limited significant advances in early prediction, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention of PE. The rapidly expanding field of metabolomics, which has the capacity to quantitatively detect low molecular weight compounds (metabolites) in tissue and biological fluids, shows tremendous promise in gaining a better understanding of PE. This review will discuss this emerging field and its contribution to recent advances in the understanding of PE pathophysiology, and identification of early predictive metabolic biomarkers for this complex disorder.

A computer program, PRODIZ, has been developed, one of the aims being to select the most efficient mobile crane in addition to drawing on existing data covering costs and production factors, all prior to future studies on an expert system.

The authors have prepared a classification of production factors for assembly, with a special review on crane selection and a relevant computer program enabling adaptations to be made quickly and efficiently.

Background: Artificial reproductive technique - in vitro fertilization (IVF) has taken an important place in medicine as a routine and efficient method for the treatment of fertility. Aim: To examine outcome in newborns from pregnancies after IVF. Methods: A retrospective study included 260 newborns from pregnancies after IVF, which were divided into two groups. The first group consisted of 136 neonates from monofoetal IVF pregnancies and the second group consisted of 124 neonates from multifoetal IVF pregnancies. In newborns were analyzed: gender, gestation, anthropometric measures, Apgar score, morbidity and outcome. Results: The study found no difference in sex distribution between both groups of newborns from IVF pregnancies (p>0.05). Analysis found a significantly higher gestational age (37.6gw vs. 35.0gw, p< 0.01), lower rate of prematurity (20.5% vs. 64.5%, p< 0.01), greater birth body weight (3098.5g vs. 2238.7g, p< 0.01) and body length (49.9cm vs. 45.5cm, p< 0.01) in neonates from monofoetal IVF pregnancies. Analysis found significantly higher values of Apgar score at the first (8.5 vs. 7.0, p< 0.01) and at the fifth minute (9.3 vs. 7.8, p< 0.01) of birth in newborns from monofoetal IVF pregnancies. Testing has found a significantly lower morbidity in the first group of neonates (40.4% vs. 71.8%, p< 0.01), respectively, higher number of newborns from monofoetal IVF pregnancies had a favorable outcome (89.7% vs. 59.6%, p< 0.01). Conclusion: Newborns from monofoetal IVF pregnancies have a lower potential risk of perinatal complications with lower morbidity and better outcome, unlike newborns from multifoetal IVF pregnancies.

The initial theoretical studies1 of an interface between two dielectric materials, one of which has an intensity-dependent refractive index predicted that under appropriate conditions the reflectivity of the interface exhibit optical hysteresis and bistability2. The effect occurs at grazing angles of incidence and for weak nonlinearities. Then, the hysteresis jumps from the regime of nonlinear total internal reflection to the vanishing reflection regime appear in the reflection coefficient. There has been considerable evidence that surface waves have a strong influence on the nonlinear reflection2, but the current status of both theoretical and experimental investigations of nonlinear surface waves is far from being satisfactory.
