Despite originating in the tech industry, hackathons have now been adopted in a variety of domains. However, little is known about the status of hackathon literature within educational research. As the number of studies grows, it is essential to develop an understanding of the current state and identify prevalent topics and trends shaping the literature. Toward this goal, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis and scoping review on hackathon research in the field of education. A total of 249 documents written by 1,309 authors and published in 180 unique sources for the period 2014-2022 were identified. Collectively, the dataset amassed 1,312 citations with an average of 6.69 citations per document. The most prevalent subject areas were computer science, social sciences, engineering, medicine, and business. Word frequency analysis showed that "innovation" was the most occurring word, which represents the fundamental objective of hackathon events. The most influential work was the analysis of hackathons as an informal learning platform. Engineering education was the most trending topic while healthcare is an emerging research cluster. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of the hackathon literature and its research landscape in an educational setting.

Digital competence among business research students is heralded as a pragmatic expression of the quality of research output and effective collaboration. Self-Directed Learning (SDL) is a resourceful personal and professional development technique, yet there is minimal research on SDL for digital competence among business scholars. This study investigates the behavioral aspects of business research students to engage in the SDL mechanism for digital competence. A hypothesis-based research framework was outlined through Perceived Usefulness (PU), Facilitating Conditions (FC), Self-Directed Learning Readiness (SDLR), Personal Innovativeness (PI), Computer Self-Efficacy (CSE), and Behavioral Intention (BI). Data were collected through a quantitative survey and then analyzed by the novel multi-analytical approach, i.e., Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to test hypotheses, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to manage the non-linear associations in the model and to rank the predictors, and Importance Performance Map Analysis (IPMA) to assess the variables through importance and performance chart. Data analysis showed that all variables were significant predictors of SDL behavior where PI and CSE were prominent model antecedents. The study's contributions towards knowledge included the practical implications for boosting digital competence among young researchers, providing the in-depth analysis of antecedents of SDL behavior, and validation of multi-analytical tools in technology integration literature.

This study aims to validate a data collection tool's psychometric properties to explore whether business management research's relevance is a high-order construct made up of its perceived interest and perceived relevance. The authors conducted a confirmatory factor analysis to validate a two-factor scale. The sample was composed of 148 MBA students from a Peruvian business school. Results showed the appropriate levels of validity and reliability and confirmed the usefulness of this data set for exploring the relationship between perceived interest and relevance. Businesses and schools can replicate the validated tool for reviewing their curricula and teaching practices, exploring the gap between business and management research results and advancing managers' research literacy and evidence-based practice in business education and training.

Over the last years, educators have been forced to rethink about the whole education system. In 2005, Connectivism, a new learning theory, was emerged. Consequently, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have been presented as an alternative powerful educational system. Money was invested and tens of for-profit and non-profit companies involved in producing MOOC. However, integrating and adopting MOOC in educational institutions worldwide is still questionable. This literature review paper addressed and discussed the issues that higher education institutions should consider before adopting MOOC. The findings showed eight considerable, interrelated and controllable MOOC issues: high dropout rate, accreditation, business model, reputation, pedagogy, research ethics, student assessment and language barrier. Policy makers in higher education institutions should be aware of these issues before including MOOC in their development plans. In addition, the paper presented a number of possible future studies.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore the antecedents and consequences of employee engagement (EE) in global research and Vietnamese business context. Design/methodology/approach: This review was conducted in the following order--an integrative review for garnering drivers and outcomes of EE in global research, followed by a narrative review for selecting variables relevant to Vietnamese businesses. Findings: In EE global research, a 3 × 3 findings framework was devised. Three antecedent clusters included the internal environment, job-related and employee-related factors. EE resulted in three outcome clusters: intra-role behaviors, extra-role behaviors and personal development and growth. In Vietnamese businesses, few studies existed on organizational learning and organizational support as EE antecedents, whereas turnover intention was examined the most as an EE outcome. Research limitations/implications: The search was limited to EE-related peer-reviewed articles in Business Source Complete and Google Scholar. Literature on Vietnam EE was restricted to ProQuest Dissertations and Theses and Google Scholar because of a lack of literature availability on this topic in Business Source Complete. Practical implications: Knowing that leadership, HR practices and working environment are important antecedents of EE in Vietnam (Table II) would prompt enterprise leaders and managers to improve the company's conditions for engaging its employees. This is an important finding because Vietnamese businesses are suffering increasing turnover. Creating favorable organizational support evidenced via career growth opportunities, pay and benefits, company culture, job fit and effective management will stimulate employees to stay and engage. Originality/value: This study emphasizes the organizational and employee factors in EE research and calls for combined research application to inform EE in Vietnamese businesses, thus providing ground for human resource development researchers and practitioners in their respective work.

This study investigated the impact of two approaches to research-led education on students' learning and their understandings of research in the context of two university courses in international business involving third year undergraduate and graduate students. One approach involved the lecturer using his research as the basis for a case-study assignment involving an intercultural business negotiation. In the second approach students conducted a research project in which they reviewed the academic literature to identify practical implications for business and theoretical gaps as the basis for future research. A questionnaire was used to explore students' perceptions of the impacts on their learning and understandings of research. Students' understandings of research were most informed by the research based learning project which was presented to them as an experience of doing research. Students valued the lecturer using his research in the course because of his enthusiasm and his expertise and mentoring in doing research. However many students developed only limited understandings of research in the subject area, despite their direct experience of the lecturers' research. The implications for the design of research-led education approaches are explored.

The sustained phase of transition to economies characterised by considerable, and sometimes revolutionary, advances in science, technology and related industries, coupled with subsequent profound changes in economy and society, has increased the importance of the knowledge-intensive phases of production for value-creation. As enterprises, in fact, become more reliant on technology, they will become more dependent on knowledge. Accordingly, policy makers in a growing number of countries have become increasingly concerned with the management of the entire knowledge chain: from creation to the diffusion, conversion and entrepreneurial exploitation of scientific and technological knowledge. The knowledge chain also has profound implications for higher education institutions and business schools, which to be successful, need to help companies create knowledge and become part of knowledge streams. To secure a better future for knowledge flow between universities and firms, knowledge transfer (KT) needs trustful and outward-looking knowledge brokers with excellent interpersonal skills, commercial awareness, and contractual experience. Trust is a critical component of the business formula for those who should build bridges in a field so subtle and ambiguous as that of transferring know-how, know-what, know-why, know-whom, know-when. For the foreseeable future, KT advancements would not be imperilled in as much as arrangements for KT are likely to be made within a frame of reference that fits with the enterprising role of knowledge intermediaries organized in trust-promoting groups. These groups could play a greater role in building sustainable relationships between the academic community and the business sector, with an emphasis on SMEs.

Policy changes prompt many universities to become more entrepreneurial and doctoral researchers, especially those working in science and technology, are expected to play important roles, contributing to the growth of knowledge economies through entrepreneurial activity. Informal evidence of differing views on entrepreneurship between Chinese and British doctoral students prompted a quantitative and qualitative investigation, designed to generate a fuller insight. The findings confirmed that Chinese students were more likely to agree that research should contribute to economic success and to view entrepreneurship as a natural means of doing so, as part of their "responsibility to improve the future". In contrast, the British students' views were less positive, with one participant associating entrepreneurship with commerce and a "dirty word". The study explores the factors contributing to this range of views and implications for researchers and universities. It concludes with recommendations to produce more informed and proactive engagement of researchers with entrepreneurialism.

The increasing disparity between the research and teaching aspects of academic careers has been an area of concern in different national contexts over a number of decades. Anyone working with educational enhancement will have encountered the binary choice between research development and educational enhancement that academics are forced to make, often in favour of the former and at the expense of the latter. Consider how many staff are recruited in institutions to support researcher development as compared to those supporting teacher development. Are such staff included within permanent university structures? How would staff development budgets for teaching- and research-focussed academics compare? When investment for the enhancement of teaching is made, this often follows externally-driven political and economic agendas, and funding. As a result, academic developers are frequently concerned about the sustainability of such projects. Through a combination of serendipity and discussion, the authors have identified a business model that helps to explain such experiences, and also accept that unless structural changes at the HE sector level are addressed, the resourcing for teacher and researcher development will continue to reflect the higher importance given to research. In this article, the authors outline the model and highlight areas where further evidence is needed to confirm that the model is indeed applicable (and under what conditions). Most importantly, they speculate about the implications to be gleaned from this new perspective on the structural realities that shape the operational conditions.

The purpose of this article is to encourage family therapists to become more interested in family business practice. It does so in three ways: (a) highlighting the number of therapists already involved in family business issues; (b) showing the parallels between family business and family therapy by applying family business research findings to couples therapy; (c) discussing how family therapists already have the practice wisdom to be effective in working with family business clients. Limitations of this practice are also discussed along with suggestions for overcoming them.

Business educators have a responsibility to ensure that future managers, employees, and shareholders are well versed in governance. Governance provides a vital link between organizations and society, allowing people to place their trust in an organization, support its mission, and ensure a continuing flow of resources to accomplish the mission. This article discusses coursework in board governance that combines a 5-month internship on a community nonprofit board with academic class work on governance topics to create a unique learning opportunity. The course combines elements of internship, mentorship, and service learning with more traditional academic activities such as lectures, guest speakers, research, and analysis. Students gain greater awareness of the needs of the broader community and the challenges of serving them. The community gains from a growing pool of people with governance knowledge and skills who understand the value of community service. (Contains 2 notes and 3 figures.)

This study examined the roles of 3 multilevel motivational predictors in proteges' personal learning in teams: an autonomy-supportive team climate, mentors' autonomy support, and proteges' autonomy orientation. The authors followed 305 proteges in 58 teams for 12 weeks and found that all 3 predictors were positively related to the proteges' personal learning in teams and that an autonomy-supportive team climate augmented the effects of mentors' autonomy support and proteges' autonomy orientation on proteges' personal learning in teams. Proteges' personal learning in teams mediated the interactive effects of an autonomy-supportive team climate with mentors' autonomy support or proteges' autonomy orientation on proteges' behavioral and attitudinal outcomes, including their organizational citizenship behaviors and job involvement. The findings of this study provide business researchers and practitioners with valuable insights into the management of autonomy. (Contains 3 figures, 1 footnote, and 3 tables.)

This study examines local research guides created by academic business librarians to assist patrons with researching the communities (towns, cities, and regions) where their schools are located. A key finding is that only 33% of the libraries surveyed provide guides to local research, while 80% provide guides to international research. (Contains 2 tables.)

Constructivism has recently gained popularity, although it is not a completely new learning paradigm. Much of the work within e-learning, for example, uses constructivism as a reference "discipline" (explicitly or implicitly). However, some of the work done within the simulation gaming (SG) community discusses what the basic assumptions and implications of constructivism for SG are. Constructivism provides one theoretical approach to the use of computer-based systems and, as such, deserves careful consideration. The author's view is that SG researchers--as SG is a transdisciplinary field--should seek to do research that is acceptable in terms of other disciplines and need to go back to the original texts in the reference discipline to gain genuine appreciation of the arguments being proposed. This is an aim of this article. Another aim of this article is to provide theoretical tools with which to enhance SG argumentation development and debriefing.

The purpose of this article is to build a coherent framework of the four main theories relating to the internationalization of firms, in order to facilitate better business teaching and research. Yet, theories of the internationalization of firms are broad and rest on different underlying assumptions. With the purpose of clarifying the potential for integration of partial theories and fragments in a more logically connected theoretical area, this article offers a meta-theoretical overview of four perspectives within international business economics: Research and its related background, basic assumptions, study area, and implications of the theories in the internationalization of the firm. This paper explores the relationship between self-reported innovative characteristics and dysfunctional personality traits. Participants (N = 207) from a range of occupations completed the Innovation Potential Indicator (IPI) and the Hogan Development Survey (HDS). Those who reported innovative characteristics also reported the following dysfunctional traits: Arrogant, Manipulative, Dramatic, Eccentric; and lower levels of Cautious, Perfectionist and Dependent. A representative approximation of the higher order factor "moving against people" (Hogan & Hogan, 1997) was positively associated with innovative characteristics. It is concluded that innovation potential may be viewed as a positive effect of some otherwise dysfunctional traits, most notably those encompassed under the second-order HDS factor "moving against people". Success in any organization may depend on changing the behavior of stakeholders to meet new challenges. But humans have brains designed to register change as threat, and thus they often cling to old habits and mindsets. Recent breakthroughs in brain research provide a fresh alternative to both behavioral and humanistic approaches to organizational development. Neuroscience principles are now transforming leadership in business enterprises, and these concepts have relevance to any organization or program.

The present study assumes that, despite the relative uniformity of research articles (RAs) imposed by the requirements of the genre, there may be intercultural variation in the rhetorical preferences of different writing cultures. This study develops further Moreno's [Text 18 (1998) 545] model for the comparison of the metatext employed in English and Spanish to signal premise-conclusion intersentential coherence relations. It does so by focusing on the types and preference of use of retrospective cohesive mechanisms employed in premise-conclusion metatext to label the premise from which the upcoming conclusion is to be drawn. Variability is sought in different aspects of the label arriving at the following conclusions: (1) With regards to the extent to which authors make explicit reference to the stretch of discourse from which the upcoming conclusion is to be drawn, Spanish academics show a greater tendency towards the use of fuzzy labels; (2) The overall distribution of the lexical range of labels is also different, with English showing a greater tendency towards the use of non-metalinguistic labels. Retrospective labels have a greater tendency to add interpersonal meanings in English both (3) through the label itself and (4) through its modification; (5) The various ways in which modifiers in retrospective labels add ideational meaning seem to be distributed differently.
