The oil and gas industry in Brazil is fast opening up to foreign oil and gas companies since the country approved a constitutional amendment that eliminated the state-owned Petroleo Brasileiro SA (Petrobas) monopoly. Under the amendment, international companies are permitted to explore new fields, either independently or by partnering with Petrobas. The government aims to produce 1.2 mil barrels daily in 1998, 1.3 mil in 1999 and 1.5 mil by year 2000.
