The Radboud University Nijmegen has started an investment program for a free-electron laser radiation source and a 45 T hybrid magnet system to increase the capabilities of its High Field Magnet Laboratory. The free electron lasers and hybrid magnet system are most likely to be operational by 2012.

Abstract

A study was conducted on powder-in-tube Pb1-xSnxMo6S8 Chevrel wires' overall critical current density at high magnetic field of up to 24 tesla. An overall critical current density slightly over 100 A/mm2 at 20 tesla and 63 A/mm2 at 24 tesla were observed at 1.9 K. An abrupt occurrence of the resistive state was seen below 18 tesla, suggesting that the region has local defects.

Abstract

The critical current density, current distribution and ac susceptibility of hot isostatically pressed (HIP) PbMo6S8 wires with a molybdenum barrier were measured. The measurements were carried out to examine the degradation mechanisms that limit the critical current densities of PbMo3S8 conductors to around 200 MA/m2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. The results demonstrated improved critical current density with higher HIP temperature.

The specifications and performance of the new 50 mm bore, 30 T resistive magnet, which is commissioned at the Nijmegen High Field Magnet Laboratory, are described. The two innermost Florida-type Bitter coils will be used in the 30 T, 10 MW hybrid magnet, which is expected to be completed in 2008.
