1. Lean management methods: Evidence from the manufacturing industry in the Czech Republic

Abstract: Lean management is a way to satisfy the increasing customer demands while maintaining production efficiency. This paper aims to map and analyze the level of use of lean management methods in the manufacturing industry in the Czech Republic. It searched for links and dependencies between company size, production type, and lean management methods in operational processes. The data were obtained from a nationwide survey within the manufacturing industry companies and were presented using descriptive statistics. A structured questionnaire was sent to 469 manufacturing companies with a return rate of 18.8%. Nonparametric statistical analysis (Fisher’s exact test) was used to confirm or reject the hypotheses. The research results confirmed the dependence of lean management methods on company size and production type. Lean management methods are used mainly by large enterprises, while micro- and small enterprises rarely employ them. Considering production typology, lean management is applied in serial production, and Single Minute Exchange of Dies (SMED) prevails. The most used techniques in mass production include the method of order in the workplace (5S) and Kaizen. The findings suggest that the future of industrial output should focus on sustainability and rationalization of production resources, which is offered by the synergy of lean management and Industry 5.0. 2. Nexus between sustainability and financial performance in the Serbian banking sector

Abstract: Research Question: The paper investigates various ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) related practices within the leading European banking groups (BGs) present in Serbian banking sector (SBS), including their financial performances. Motivation: The goal of the research was to explore approach habits to sustainable business between the leading European BGs present in the SBS. It should have in mind that SBS are in compliance with their headquarter/major shareholder. The rising global worry about ESG issues and its overall impact forces banking business model to use holistic approach, including the plug-in of sustainability and responsible behaviours. The paper draws on sustainable banking surveys of Aracil et al. (2021) and Stefanovic et al. (2021) in Business-Case domain, applying them on SBS with introduction of 3 comparable sustainable indicators (environmental loans, reduction of tCO2, community investments). It is the first study which takes in respect ESG elements of principal BGs in SBS, with the comprehensive analysis of subject’s legislative framework. Idea: The core idea of the paper was to empirically investigate the sustainable practice in SBS, based on different banks’ reports and publications, including disclosed ESG indicators. E-loans (EL) and profitability indicators were examined individually as dependent variables since other ESG and financial (solvency, financial stability and efficiency) variables served as independent ones. Data: Analysis was conducted using data of 4 European active BGs on SBS, in the period of 2015-2021, due to fact that there was the lack of quantitative metrics and non-uniform reporting practice. Tools: Statistical analysis (descriptive statistics, correlation, regression test utilizing ANOVA), were used to draw conclusions about the relationship variables, particularly correlation between ESG variables and profitability ratios. Findings: The study showed for analyzed BGs that: (1) they had unique ESG practice, based on global standards and EBA (European Banking Authority) regulation; (2) they had good credit risk management including E-risks in practice; (3) sustainability had significant inter-connectedness among ESG constituents, as well as with some of the financial metrics; (4) statistical significance of ESG metrics for EL; however similar findings are missing when it comes to association between financial performance (in terms of profitability) and ESG practice. Contribution: The paper introduces and expands existing research related to sustainable banking on SBS for further education of all stakeholders.

3. FDI Time Series Forecasts: Evidence from Emerging Markets

Abstract: Research Question: This paper investigates the trend and flow of foreign direct investments (FDI) in emerging markets, with the focus on FDI in Serbia in comparison with akin countries from the region. Motivation: FDI is an important factor of growth and prosperity in developing countries. It largely influences trade, productivity, and economic development of a receiving country. Based on UNCTAD’s World Investment Report of 2019, the share of global FDI in developing countries was 54 per cent, which was a record. Recently, Serbia has been recognized as one of the most popular destinations for FDI in Southeastern Europe. This motivated us to analyze the chances and possibilities of enlargement of FDI in Serbia, as well in other Balkan countries. Idea: The main idea of the paper is to analyze and estimate time series of FDI net inflows for Serbia. We strive to investigate whether FDI demonstrates the durable growth in the future period of time. Furthermore, we compare the state of Serbian FDI with the former Yugoslav countries, in search for disparities or similarities. Data: We observed the FDI net inflows that are measured in current US dollars, while the data were retrieved from the World Bank database. The earliest available time point is 1992, while the latest available year of observation is 2018. Tools: We estimated the FDI net flow time series using a list of suitable ARIMA models, and we have chosen the best model fit among them using AIC and BIC criteria. Findings: We have found that Serbia and North Macedonia show a mild growth in future investments. A significant percentage of the cumulative FDI inflows from EU companies have been invested precisely in Serbia, while in North Macedonia, fostering FDI has been promoted as one of the main instruments for employment and economic development. Oher Yugoslav countries tend to stagnate in the future period, which is in literature called a negative ‘Western Balkans’ effect on FDI. Contribution: Findings of the mild growth in FDI inflows in Serbia and North Macedonia contribute to the policy of attracting the FDI inflows in the countries of Southeastern Europe.

4. Business E-NeGotiAtion: A Method Using a Genetic Algorithm for Online Dispute Resolution in B2B Relationships

Abstract: An opportunity to resolve disputes as an out-of-court settlement through computer-mediated communication is usually easier, faster, and cheaper than filing an action in court. Artificial intelligence and law (AI & Law) research has gained importance in this area. The article presents a design of the E-NeGotiAtion method for assisted negotiation in business to business (B2B) relationships, which uses a genetic algorithm for selecting the most appropriate solution(s). The aim of the article is to present how the method is designed and contribute to knowledge on online dispute resolution (ODR) with a focus on B2B relationships. The evaluation of the method consisted of an embedded single-case study, where participants from two countries simulated the realities of negotiation between companies. For comparison, traditional negotiation via e-mail was also conducted. The evaluation confirms that the proposed E-NeGotiAtion method quickly achieves solution(s), approaching the optimal solution on which both sides can decide, and also very importantly, confirms that the method facilitates negotiation with the partner and creates a trusted result. The evaluation demonstrates that the proposed method is economically efficient for parties of the dispute compared to negotiation via e-mail. For a more complicated task with five or more products, the E-NeGotiAtion method is significantly more suitable than negotiation via e-mail for achieving a resolution that favors one side or the other as little as possible. In conclusion, it can be said that the proposed method fulfills the definition of the dual-task of ODR—it resolves disputes and builds confidence.

5. Multi-criteria ranking of organizational factors affecting the learning quality outcomes in elementary education in Serbia

Abstract: The research within this paper is motivated by the opinion that different organizational factors in primary education can have a stronger or weaker impact on the quality of the learning outcome. Organizational factors, criteria analyzed in this paper, are school management, school infrastructure, students’ foreknowledge, teacher competencies, curriculum content, student motivation, and the quality of the teaching process. Using SWARA (Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis) method of multi-criteria decision-making, the answers of elementary school principals, members of the panel of experts, were processed. The calculation within this method was performed using fuzzy numbers to ensure the reliability of expert evaluations. The results of the applied method, in the form of weighting coefficients of the criteria, indicate that school management has an influence on the selection and building of teachers’ competencies while the given competence can indirectly affect the overall success of students through the establishment of an adequate school infrastructure, which affects the knowledge quality. Knowing the factor that has the highest impact enables principals to manage this factor and contribute to enhancing the knowledge quality. 6. MANAGING SECURITY RISKS IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Abstract: This paper examines the existing theory of risk management in international business, as well as the effects that the globalization and digital transformation have on the development of contemporary security risks. Besides the analysis of the key elements of globalization and digital transformation, this paper points out that the imperative for success in international business is a systematic approach to security risks, and the new categorization of risks in international business. While the pandemic has provided an impetus for the rapid and widespread adoption of digital technologies, it has also created new opportunities for hostile threat actors leading to an increase in cybercrime and thus reinforced the demand for robust and responsive security measures. The paper argues that more now than ever, there is a burning need to address the problem of security risks properly. Initial efforts to address these risks have sought to include the aforementioned security risks in existing risk mitigation practices and to address them through existing business risk processes, but it has become evident that success risk mitigation requires new and adapted approach. The authors present the review of existing theory of security analysis and propose the new categorization of risks in international business to include security risks. Security risks include, but are not limited to threats such as loss of data and intellectual property, fraud, disruption of business processes, and the possible endangerment of the physical security of both employees and assets.

Abstract: Innovations represent the engine of the business and economic. This is particularly relevant to the traditional sectors such as forestry and forest-based industry that are expected to play an important role in the future steps oriented towards meeting the sustainable development goals. The main aim of this study is to analyse the stakeholders’ perceptions of the innovation trends in the forestry and forest-based sectors by using a Q-methodology. This research addressed three groups of respondents in Slovakia, whose task was to subjectively assess innovative trends in the forestry and forest-based sectors. Based on the results it can be concluded that the innovation trend in the forestry and forest-based sectors will be oriented towards the technological progress focused on the increasing efficiency of wood processing and increasing the usability of waste material as well as the trend of increasing development of innovations in the forest recreation services.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to identify the results of preliminary research on key performance indicators and their use in the area of small and medium-sized enterprises, which are non manufacturing companies (authorized dealers of new vehicles) in the automotive industry. The next aim of this article is to outline the position of these companies in the czech economy and to identify their biggest concerns for the future. The whole preliminary research is linked to the creation of a system of key performance indicators for these companies. The purpose of the article is to evaluate the results of preliminary research and define its objectives. Within the methodology, a questionnaire survey was used, according to which a preliminary research was performed. This survey was supplemented by telephone interviews and email communication with respondents. Basic statistical methods of absolute and relative frequencies were used to evaluate the results of the preliminary research, and subsequently the interdependence of various information from the questionnaire was sought. The scientific goal of the article is to define the main research questions for research and to identify the most important findings in this area, which could signal the development and direction of the subsequent research. The result of the whole article is the identification of the main problems and patterns of behavior that characterize these companies. It was found that helping these companies to set performance benchmarks is absolutely necessary, as we encounter a lack of understanding in the use of these benchmarks.

10. The Influence of the Brand Personality Concept on Consumer Satisfaction and Loyalty

Abstract: Research Question: The goal of this research is to describe how the concept of brand personality and its dimensions affect customer satisfaction and loyalty. Motivation: Creating brand personality is an efficient differentiation strategy, used by numerous companies for building and sustaining competitive advantage. Brands with personality are considered as real people and can be described using human characteristics. Therefore, consumers can establish connection with them more easily, which increases customer satisfaction and brand loyalty. Idea: The main idea of this paper was to empirically evaluate the relationship between the concept of brand personality and its dimensions and customer satisfaction and loyalty. Data: The information for this purpose was gathered through a survey that included 191 participants. Tools: Collected data were statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics, reliability and regression analyses in order to test the hypothesis. Findings: The results have proved that the brand personality plays a significant part in building satisfaction and loyalty. Furthermore, results indicate a significant positive relationship between all five brand personality dimensions and satisfaction on loyalty, with excitement and competency as dominant. Contribution: This paper provides new insights significant for the Serbian-speaking audience and is genuinely useful since it stresses the importance of brand personification and its influence on success. Therefore, it can be used by brand managers to aid the process of establishing and sustaining strong brands.

11. Expected Competencies from University Graduates for Employment in Serbia

Abstract: Research Question: This paper investigates into which competencies and competency areas are essential for graduates to be employable in Serbia. Motivation: The research was conducted with the aim to recommend to the Faculty of Organizational Sciences to adjust their curriculum, so that graduates could acquire competencies necessary for employment at junior positions. Combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, the paper includes required competencies according to popular reports, analysis of vacancies for junior positions in the field of Management and IT, focus groups and surveys conducted in companies in Serbia. Idea: The main idea of the research was to empirically evaluate the need and importance of general competencies for performing a job at junior positions. Participants in the research were experts from human resource management departments and domain experts from different fields who participate in the selection process. Data: During the research, 52 competencies from world reports, 60 competencies from open job vacancies, and 69 competencies during the focus group were analyzed. The questionnaire was created based on 29 competencies that were results from the qualitative research and filled out by 118 representatives from companies from different business domains. Tools: Content analysis of reports and vacancy ads, focus group report and statistical analysis of survey data (t test, Principal component analysis) were used to draw conclusions about required competencies for junior positions in the Serbian market and to categorize them. Findings: Competencies that are expected from future employees are to be socially skilled leaders capable of solving problems and intrinsically motivated to create and to be productive. Above all, they should be able to learn continuously. Specifically, when comparing managerial junior positions to junior IT professionals, it seems more important to be competitive, have strong presentation skills and to be conscientious. Contribution: Competencies important for graduates’ employability in Serbia are identified and grouped in different competency areas based on what universities’ curricula could be adapted.

12. Industrial Revolutions and their impact on managerial practice: Learning from the past

Abstract: Technological changes that come with industrial revolution have largely affected businesses, as well as society. With the current technological shift and Fourth Industrial Revolution, many questions arise regarding the impacts and effects on current ways businesses operate. This study presents a retrospective analysis and overview of previous industrial revolutions. The aim of the retrospective analysis is to identify common characteristics that may lead to lessons learned for the forthcoming Fourth Industrial Revolution and thus complement the current debate on technological change. All previous industrial revolutions have led to change in business environments and new challenges for managers and owners. The findings show that all previous revolutions have led to increase in the number of service jobs created. The key approach of successful countries during the times of industrial revolution has included education as the source of new skills and knowledge necessary for adaption. Countries that were able to produce high skilled people could not only invent, but also adapt to new technologies sooner than others. Similarly, these approaches included introduction of new managerial practices in order to be able to utilize new technologies and new skilled workers effectively. Abstract: Sustainable development is one of global imperatives and it involves the harmonization of economic, environmental, and social development goals, with an appropriate institutional support. There are plenty of resources pertaining to the sustainable development of agriculture and tourism, as numerous studies and practical examples worldwide confirm. The paper highlights the example of the Republic of Serbia and can be of use for other countries with similar resource potentials and developmental constraints. Namely, agriculture and tourism in the Republic of Serbia are distinguished by abundant natural and cultural-historical resources, but what mostly lacks are funds for serious investment, as well as a modern and holistic approach to development, so the available resources are insufficiently used. Accordingly, the research aims to point to the necessity of a more creative use of agro-tourism resources, i.e. to the more promising directions of the integral development of agriculture and tourism on sustainable grounds. 14. The Assessment and Ranking of Failures in the Information Technology Industry Based on FMEA and MCDM

Abstract: In the course of global trends, the development and application of information technologies have emerged as a valuable source of the economy at both the micro and the macro levels. According to the results of the best practice, the application of a piece of software with failures is known to possibly to serious consequences. The analysis and elimination of potential failures in commercial software is the problem that represents one of engineers’ most important tasks. In this paper, a new integrated model for the evaluation and ranking of software failures is proposed. The cost aspect is integrated into the traditional severity index. The assessment of the severity indices, as well as a possibility of detection, is based on the Failure Mode and Effects Analysis - FMEA framework. The weights of the overall severity index, the occurrence of failures, and the possibilities of detection are calculated by applying the best-worst method. The determination of the rank of the identified failures is given by applying conventional Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution - TOPSIS. The priority of the activities that are undertaken in order to eliminate the identified failures corresponds to the obtained rank of the failures. The proposed model is illustrated by real-life data.

15. The impact of store satisfaction on consumer responses in out-of-stock situations

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test a conceptual model by means of which we try to establish the influence of store satisfaction and other variables (gender, mobility and availability of alternative stores) on consumers’ responses to out-of-stock (OOS) situations. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used a standardized questionnaire to gather data on consumer responses to OOS and then analyzed determinants including store satisfaction (for which reliability, validity and unidimensionality were tested). The survey was conducted in the four largest cities in Serbia. All respondents were interviewed randomly, through telephone calls, whereby 392 responses were gathered. The established hypotheses were tested by means of a multinomial logit model with the use of marginal effects. Findings – The results show that store satisfaction significantly affects three out-of-stock responses (store switching, postponement and product switching), whereas, positively in the case of product switching and postponement and negatively in the case of store switching. The results also show that store satisfied consumers, regardless of other factors, are not likely to switch stores in out-of-stock situations. Originality/value – As well as managerial implications, this paper included store satisfaction as an antecedent of consumer OOS responses for the first time. In addition, the impact of this variable on OOS responses was analyzed at both levels of the availability of alternative stores, gender and mobility.

16. Managing business processes using soft computing techniques – a literature review

Abstract: Non-ideal and turbulent environment is affecting the business operations of today's companies. The influence and behavior of external factors is not possible or very difficult to predict, but necessary to consider in the decision making process at all organizational levels. Development of computer technologies allowed companies processing large amounts of data in order to make decisions which take into account both internal and external factors. Due to their tolerance of imprecision and uncertainty, Soft computing techniques (SCT) are increasingly used in solving those problems. They are characterized by the ability to adapt quickly to the changes in the environment, stability when processing large amounts of inaccurate data and real time responsiveness. The basic and most commonly used Soft Computing techniques are Fuzzy logic (FL) and neural networks (NN). This paper gives a review of 78 papers referring to the development of theory and practical application of soft computing techniques in business process management. Papers were selected based on the journals impact factor and year of publication (with the focus on recent papers). Approximately, equal number of both Fuzzy logic and Neural Network techniques was tried to be captured. Although this review is not final, it can be considered as a valid guide to explore the opportunities and possibilities which fuzzy logic and neural networks offer process owners in managing their business processes. In conclusion of this paper, fields for further research have been identified.

17. ARWU vs. Alternative ARWU Ranking: What are the Consequences for Lower Ranked Universities?

Abstract: The ARWU ranking has been a source of academic debate since its development in 2003, but the same does not account for the Alternative ARWU ranking. Namely, the Alternative ARWU ranking attempts to reduce the influence of the prestigious indicators Alumni and Award which are based on the number of received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals by alumni or university staff. However, the consequences of the reduction of the two indicators have not been scrutinized in detail. Therefore, we propose a statistical approach to the comparison of the two rankings and an in-depth analysis of the Alternative ARWU groups. The obtained results, which are based on the official data, can provide new insights into the nature of the Alternative ARWU ranking. The presented approach might initiate further research on the Alternative ARWU ranking and on the impact of university ranking’s list length. JEL Classification: C10, C38, I23

Abstract: Research Question: The paper explores the problem of defining the number of required employees and their skills, as well as optimizing the work time. Motivation: Motivation for this paper arises from the fact that an organizational structure of business system has to be conceived and proportioned so as to justify the main company jobs and goals. Almost every job set for the management must be performed properly and reliably in changeable environmental conditions. In order to maintain the efficiency of complex business systems with dynamic and stochastic changeable and unchangeable variables, it is essential that the organizational structure be flexible and constantly adjusted. Idea: The idea of the paper was to develop a model for human resource allocation (HRA) in fuzzy environment. Data: The model is tested in realistic industrial environment - the example of the logistics administrative bodies in the Petroleum Industry of Serbia. The model for HRA is based on an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and fuzzy mathematical model (FMM) for treating uncertainty. ANFIS-FMM model enables the human resource strategy development based on the optimisation of the employees’ work time. In this ANFIS-FMM model the input variables are described using fuzzy sets represented by Gaussian functions. Using expert reasoning, an unique knowledge base is formed which enables the human resource strategy development based on the optimisation of the employees’ work time. Findings: Based on authors’ knowledge there is a lack of the fuzzy logic applications, adaptive neuro-fuzzy models, linear and dynamic programming, as well as heuristic and metaheuristic models related to HRA. In most of the papers, the classical methods of strategic management have been used for HRA. Contribution: In this paper the model for HRA is developed based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy technique application and FMM. The model has four main advantages over other HRA methods: the system possesses adaptability, the model is efficient in conditions of uncertainty, the neuro-fuzzy based HRA model allows dynamic decision making in HRA management through the implementation of a computer-based system, it can be IT-supported tool.

Abstract: Radical changes resulting from the Fourth Industrial Revolution strongly affect industrialized European countries. In particular, due to the new technologies that are characteristic of Industry 4.0, it will be essential for companies to make the necessary changes and achieve competitiveness through the implementation of these technologies. In order for companies to be able to make radical changes and innovations, they need to secure all the supporting areas in their organization. This research paper is focused on comparison of companies from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Switzerland in the context of readiness for Industry 4.0. This research was part of a research project, while data were collected in the period of 2015–2016. We have analysed companies from selected countries based on 7 areas which are closely interconnected with the business transformation and technology transformation coming from Industry 4.0. The main analysed questions focused on areas such as employee education and training, organizational culture, strategy, or organizational processes, that will be most affected by radical changes in the environment. Research has highlighted the differences between countries as a result of long-standing cultural differences, but at the same time identified the unified influence of the ongoing global debate on the need for technological innovation. With Slovak and Czech companies being below stronger innovators in the maturity of education systems, we strongly advise considering partnering in education which can bring valuable information to businesses that want to take on the wave of innovation.

21. Innovations Impact on Efficiency of European Railway Companies

Abstract: The aim of this paper is the assessment of innovations impact on European railways efficiency. In order to achieve sustainable transportation development, the key challenge is modal shift from road to rail, and development of single European transport market. Innovations in the railway transport sector contribute to the higher efficiency of transport services and promoting a more competitive and resource-efficient transport system. In the first stage of this study, efficiency scores are obtained through the use of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), and the ranking of 23 railway companies for the time period from 2009 to 2013 is conducted. In the second stage, factors representing technological and organizational innovations are introduced. Using different statistical tests the impact of these factors on railways technical efficiency (TE) is analyzed. Results showed significant impact of innovations on efficiency level of railway companies. This paper considers most recent time period, thus enabling observation of current trends in European railway transport market. Innovations observed in this study represent key elements in the field of technological development and the structural organization of railways, with the aim of achieving sustainable European rail transport system.

Abstract: Analysis of the applicability of the Hull and White (FHS) model on the Baltic equities market has not been the subject of significant research, especially not in the context of meeting the Basel Committee backtesting rules. The paper discusses the applicability of different variants of this model, in order to answer the question whether any variants (and which of them) of the model can be used in these markets in the context of the Basel II and III standards. The survey results show that 1) there isn’t an optimal variant of this model, but that risk managers have to keep in mind stylized facts of financial returns when they specify the FHS model; 2) according to different criteria of the validity of the model (Basel II and III standards) different variants of models are differently ranked, which suggests that selection of a suitable model implies the use of a large number of different criteria, the model validity and loss function, especially those who take care of the size of tail loss and ES.

Abstract: A long-time dominant position of protective features in the intellectual property (IP) rights has been neutralized by their commercializing possibilities. Patents, trademarks and other forms of IP are increasingly being seen as trading assets rather than protection agents. The economic approach to intellectual property emphasizes the material value of intellectual property, which can be appropriated only if that property is used economically, regardless of its actual legal protection status. National institutions dealing with IP rights need to have a continuous service-oriented approach with developing new and specialized services to facilitate the needs of societies which tend to base their competitiveness on the strength of knowledge they possess. The process of transformation to a knowledge-based economy demands that companies fully understand and take advantage of the IP system, which is where business support institutions can provide assistance. A contribution to the increase in the use of the IP system by Serbian companies in recent years can be attributed to the introduction of new services by the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Serbia.

Abstract: Each business enterprise strives to achieve the most ef- ficient organization of its operations. While business en- terprises can influence internal factors of organization, external factors are more rigid. Public organizations have less of an incentive to be efficient. Furthermore, their or- ganization is less favorable since the decision making is centralized and highly formal (i.e. legislative). Adop- tion of business process orientation (BPO) paradigm, with an emphasis on the management of internal factors of organization, has provided business organizations with substantial savings and improvements in efficiency. However, external factors also have a high potential for improvement of efficiency. For instance, development of supply chains or value chains has proven that external factors can be harnessed to provide additional sources of competitiveness. Other external factors can also be used to improve the performance of individual organiza- tions, an entire industry or economy as a whole. These synergic effects can be achieved through a unified and virtualized communication infrastructure, document ex- change and conduct of business transactions. The goal of this paper is to present business environment prop- erties in an e-Society that can be further developed to enhance integration between organizations and public institutions, which in turn can be used to create and manage inter-institutional business processes. This type of processes can promote e-business and e-business models to a new level of efficiency, making a whole in- dustry or national economy comparatively more com- petitive in international markets.

Two influential frameworks in the DMS discourse, proposed by Scott & Bruce, and Rowe, provide insightful lenses for correlating dominant styles with an array of personal characteristics. This comprehensive study delves into questionnaire results obtained in 2020 and 2022, employing methodologies aligned with Scott & Bruce, and Rowe. The survey targeted cohorts of business and military students, capturing nuanced aspects of decision-making. Introducing innovative concepts, namely submissive DMS and intensity of influence, expanded the analytical framework and facilitated a deeper understanding of decision-making dynamics. The analysis revealed substantial variations in decision-making styles within student populations, elucidating correlations with distinct personal characteristics. The incorporation of the intensity of dominance concept allowed for nuanced interpretations, particularly during the challenging COVID-19 period and the subsequent return to normalcy. The integration of proposed concepts represents a significant enrichment for future research in the field of DMS. Abstract: Sulfur-containing amino acids are integral part of molecular mechanisms which underlie many aspects of cellular function and homeostasis, facilitated by reversible changes in oxidation states of sulfur atoms. Dysregulation of these pathways is associated with diverse pathologies, notably of the cardiovascular system, which are typically characterized by inappropriate plasma levels of sulfur-containing amino acids. The aim of this study was to assess the acute, direct effects of sulfur-containing amino acids and inorganic NaHS, as H2S donor, on cardiodynamic parameters in homocysteine treated rats. Moderate hyperhomocysteinemia did not cause significant decrease in myocardial contractility, but our findings suggest that NaHS and L-methionine cause negative effects on cardiac function in hearts of the rats treated with homocysteine, even in a single administration. Further investigations need to be carried out with purpose of better understanding and highlightening the impact of Hcy and sulphur amino acids on cardiac function.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, whether clinical outcomes are better in those who receive an invasive intervention plus medical therapy than in those who receive medical therapy alone is uncertain. METHODS: We randomly assigned 5179 patients with moderate or severe ischemia to an initial invasive strategy (angiography and revascularization when feasible) and medical therapy or to an initial conservative strategy of medical therapy alone and angiography if medical therapy failed. The primary outcome was a composite of death from cardiovascular causes, myocardial infarction, or hospitalization for unstable angina, heart failure, or resuscitated cardiac arrest. A key secondary outcome was death from cardiovascular causes or myocardial infarction. RESULTS: Over a median of 3.2 years, 318 primary outcome events occurred in the invasive-strategy group and 352 occurred in the conservative-strategy group. At 6 months, the cumulative event rate was 5.3% in the invasive-strategy group and 3.4% in the conservative-strategy group (difference, 1.9 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.8 to 3.0); at 5 years, the cumulative event rate was 16.4% and 18.2%, respectively (difference, -1.8 percentage points; 95% CI, -4.7 to 1.0). Results were similar with respect to the key secondary outcome. The incidence of the primary outcome was sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction; a secondary analysis yielded more procedural myocardial infarctions of uncertain clinical importance. There were 145 deaths in the invasive-strategy group and 144 deaths in the conservative-strategy group (hazard ratio, 1.05; 95% CI, 0.83 to 1.32). CONCLUSIONS: Among patients with stable coronary disease and moderate or severe ischemia, we did not find evidence that an initial invasive strategy, as compared with an initial conservative strategy, reduced the risk of ischemic cardiovascular events or death from any cause over a median of 3.2 years. The trial findings were sensitive to the definition of myocardial infarction that was used. Abstract: Erythema nodosum (EN) is a poly-etiological disease with an acute flow that is characterized by symmetric emergence of painful nodules often in pretibial areas. A twenty-month-old male child was admitted to hospital for evaluation of the eruptive skin changes in the lower extremities and forearms. The disease began 10 days before getting febricity and loose stools. The laboratory analysis showed an elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate and leukocytosis. Blood cultures demonstrated the presence of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, while Proteus vulgaris was isolated in urine cultures. After initiation of the empiric antibiotic therapy and then, the targeted antibiotic therapy according to the antibiogram, there was a significant improvement in a general condition and regression of cutaneous lesions. Erythema nodosum in the present case, is the result of staphylococcal bacteremia although Proteus vulgaris cannot be excluded as a cause.

Abstract: Objectives One of the main challenges posed by the surgical deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedure is the successful targeting of the structures of interest and avoidance of side effects, especially in asleep surgery. Here, intraoperative motor evoked potentials (MEPs) might serve as tool to identify the pyramidal tract. We hypothesized that intraoperative MEPs are useful to define the distance to the pyramidal tract and reduce the occurrence of postoperative capsular side effects. Materials and methods Motor potentials were evoked through both microelectrode and DBS-electrode stimulation during stereotactic DBS surgery on 25 subthalamic nuclei and 3 ventral intermediate thalamic nuclei. Internal capsule proximity was calculated for contacts on microelectrode trajectories, as well as for DBS-electrodes, and correlated with the corresponding MEP thresholds. Moreover, the predictivity of intraoperative MEP thresholds on the probability of postoperative capsular side effects was calculated. Results Intraoperative MEPs thresholds correlated significantly with internal capsule proximity, regardless of the stimulation source. Furthermore, MEPs thresholds were highly accurate to exclude the occurrence of postoperative capsular side effects. Conclusions Intraoperative MEPs provide additional targeting guidance, especially in asleep DBS surgery, where clinical value of microelectrode recordings and test stimulation may be limited. As this technique can exclude future capsular side effects, it can directly be translated into clinical practice.

Abstract: SYNOPSIS Blockchain technology is increasingly emerging as an important organizational phenomenon, especially for collaboration across firm boundaries. Over the past three decades, accounting scholars have shown significant interest in management accounting and control mechanisms that are used by actors to sustain inter-organizational relationships. We outline fundamental technical features and limitations of permissioned blockchain technology and analytically propose blockchain as an empirical concept with implications for management accounting practices that underpin inter-organizational collaboration, trust, control, and information exchange. Particular focus of the analysis is on the interplay between the technical capabilities of blockchain technology and inter-organizational management control procedures. Based on this analysis, we develop a series of propositions that theorize how these procedures affect the way in which blockchain is enacted in IORs, and how they are affected by blockchain in turn. The paper concludes with a research agenda for accounting scholars and offers directions for further research.

Abstract: In adult organisms, deregulation of the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway is significantly correlated with different malignancies. Currently, data associating genetic polymorphisms in the SHH pathway with melanoma are scarce and largely unknown. The objective of our study was to elucidate an association between gene polymorphisms in the SHH pathway and prognosis of melanoma skin cancer patients. The current study investigated the association of PTCH1 (rs357564), SMO (rs2228617) and GLI1 (rs2228224, rs2228226), polymorphisms with melanoma predisposition and prognosis. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms were assessed by TaqMan SNP Genotyping Assays. The study involved 93 melanoma patients and 97 individuals in the control group. Melanoma patients with the variant mutant genotype GG of GLI1 rs2228226 polymorphism had poorer overall survival and recurrence-free survival (P = 0.0001 and P = 0.037, respectively). The multivariate analysis revealed that disease progression [hazard ratio (HR) = 14.434, P = 0.0001] and the GLI1 rs2228226 polymorphism (HR = 4.161, P = 0.006) persisted as independent prognostic factors. Mutated allele carriers (combined heterozygous and mutated genotypes) for GLI1 rs2228224 G and GLI1 rs2228226 G allele significantly increased melanoma risk [odds ratio (OR) = 2.261, P = 0.007; OR = 2.176, P = 0.010]. Our study demonstrated that genetic variants in GLI1, downstream member of the HH signaling pathway, are the risk factors for melanoma susceptibility and it can be a novel marker for melanoma prognosis. As a crucial SHH signaling member, GLI1 can also be regarded as a novel drug target for anti-cancer treatment in melanoma.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-11-09 Background and ObjectivesPeople with multiple sclerosis MS are a vulnerable group for severe coronavirus disease 2019 COVID-19, particularly those taking immunosuppressive disease-modifying therapies DMTs. We examined the characteristics of COVID-19 severity in an international sample of people with MS.MethodsData from 12 data sources in 28 countries were aggregated sources could include patients from 1-12 countries. Demographic age, sex, clinical MS phenotype, disability, and DMT untreated, alemtuzumab, cladribine, dimethyl fumarate, glatiramer acetate, interferon, natalizumab, ocrelizumab, rituximab, siponimod, other DMTs covariates were queried, along with COVID-19 severity outcomes, hospitalization, intensive care unit ICU admission, need for artificial ventilation, and death. Characteristics of outcomes were assessed in patients with suspected/confirmed COVID-19 using multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, MS phenotype, and Expanded Disability Status Scale EDSS score.ResultsSix hundred fifty-seven 28.1% with suspected and 1,683 61.9% with confirmed COVID-19 were analyzed. Among suspected plus confirmed and confirmed-only COVID-19, 20.9% and 26.9% were hospitalized, 5.4% and 7.2% were admitted to ICU, 4.1% and 5.4% required artificial ventilation, and 3.2% and 3.9% died. Older age, progressive MS phenotype, and higher disability were associated with worse COVID-19 outcomes. Compared to dimethyl fumarate, ocrelizumab and rituximab were associated with hospitalization adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.56, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-2.41; aOR 2.43, 95% CI 1.48-4.02 and ICU admission aOR 2.30, 95% CI 0.98-5.39; aOR 3.93, 95% CI 1.56-9.89, although only rituximab was associated with higher risk of artificial ventilation aOR 4.00, 95% CI 1.54-10.39. Compared to pooled other DMTs, ocrelizumab and rituximab were associated with hospitalization aOR 1.75, 95% CI 1.29-2.38; aOR 2.76, 95% CI 1.87-4.07 and ICU admission aOR 2.55, 95% CI 1.49-4.36; aOR 4.32, 95% CI 2.27-8.23, but only rituximab was associated with artificial ventilation aOR 6.15, 95% CI 3.09-12.27. Compared to natalizumab, ocrelizumab and rituximab were associated with hospitalization aOR 1.86, 95% CI 1.13-3.07; aOR 2.88, 95% CI 1.68-4.92 and ICU admission aOR 2.13, 95% CI 0.85-5.35; aOR 3.23, 95% CI 1.17-8.91, but only rituximab was associated with ventilation aOR 5.52, 95% CI 1.71-17.84. Associations persisted on restriction to confirmed COVID-19 cases. No associations were observed between DMTs and death. Stratification by age, MS phenotype, and EDSS score found no indications that DMT associations with COVID-19 severity reflected differential DMT allocation by underlying COVID-19 severity.DiscussionUsing the largest cohort of people with MS and COVID-19 available, we demonstrated consistent associations of rituximab with increased risk of hospitalization, ICU admission, and need for artificial ventilation and of ocrelizumab with hospitalization and ICU admission. Despite the cross-sectional design of the study, the internal and external consistency of these results with prior studies suggests that rituximab/ocrelizumab use may be a risk factor for more severe COVID-19. Abstract: As early as 1978, the World Health Organization set primary healthcare as the basis on which health systems should be built worldwide. However, the health systems of the different countries show considerable variations in terms of the implementation of gatekeeping from primary to secondary healthcare and direct access to specialists and hospital care. This literature review attempts to present the gatekeeping system with references to the UK, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Germany compared to the situation in Greece, where no gatekeeping system exists. Particular emphasis is placed on the impact of gatekeeping on the healthcare system’s efficiency, equity of access, and the quality of the services provided. Evidence on the effects of gatekeeping is conflicting or limited by the low internal validity. Making the right gatekeeping implementation decisions is difficult in the absence of data. Abstract: Background: This paper reviews cost containment policies to control pharmaceutical expenditure either by regulating the pharmaceutical industry or targeting the demand side. Methods: The method used was the narrative literature review of studies which assessed the effect of pharmaceutical cost containment policies. Results: Governments worldwide have implemented a great variety of policy measures to manage pharmaceutical expenditure while ensuring fair access to essential medicines. Cost-sharing schemes, value-based pricing, reimbursement, reference pricing, payback mechanisms and the substitution of original drugs with generics and biosimilars are pivotal in these efforts, albeit with differing effectiveness across healthcare systems. Overall, it appears that any gains may be outweighed by the unfavorable effects of policies impacting patients. Although interventions have been created to improve physicians’ prescribing practice, they often achieve very minor benefits and at considerable cost. Policy measures pertaining to the regulation of the supply side must be supported by thorough evaluation in order to ascertain costs and effects and guarantee that unintended consequences are minimized. Conclusions: Policymakers frequently enact numerous laws and regulations to control pharmaceutical expenditure, even if there is limited evidence that they are cost-effective. The most crucial component of any policy’s success, regardless of the one selected, is its evaluation. Further research is needed to develop context-specific guidance that balances cost containment, equity and sustainability.

Abstract: This paper documents performance of cast-in-place reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in the Durrës during Albania earthquake of 26th of November 2019 (MW 6.4). Both mid- and high-rise RC buildings were affected by the earthquake, experiencing structural and/or non-structural damage and even collapse in some cases. The authors performed a reconnaissance study after the earthquake and were involved in seismic assessment of buildings in the affected area. Besides the observations related to physical damage related to RC buildings, the paper also presents results of a statistical analysis of damaged RC buildings in the Durrës city. The discussion in the paper is focused on damage patterns and failure mechanisms that are relevant for the seismic response of RC structures. Most common damage pattern is related to masonry infill walls, which experienced damage and failure in some cases, and affected the performance of adjacent RC columns due to the infill/frame interaction. Taller RC framed buildings (10 storeys and higher) were expected to have RC shear walls; however, these walls were reportedly absent in the damaged buildings of this type. In some cases, masonry infill walls (instead of RC shear walls) were used in the elevator shaft areas, which resulted in inadequate seismic performance. Two case study buildings were presented in detail to illustrate seismic behaviour of cast-in-place RC buildings. The case study is based on field observations after the earthquake and a detailed seismic assessment study. Finally, relevant lessons and recommendations are presented in light of the observed performance of RC buildings.

Abstract: This paper considers the design of a binary scalar quantizer of Laplacian source and its application in compressed neural networks. The quantizer performance is investigated in a wide dynamic range of data variances, and for that purpose, we derive novel closed-form expressions. Moreover, we propose two selection criteria for the variance range of interest. Binary quantizers are further implemented for compressing neural network weights and its performance is analysed for a simple classification task. Good matching between theory and experiment is observed and a great possibility for implementation is indicated.

Abstract: The change of market’s demand could be predictable to a certain degree at stable conditions but it may vary due to disruptive events. This research contributes by establishing the improvement of PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) analysis in the domain of assessment and determining severity risk factor, as well as identifying of failure priority. According to the researchers’ and practitioners’ suggestions, severity needs to be considered from the multiple aspects. The risk factor severity is considered from the aspects of product importance, quality, and cost. These aspects have different relative importance, which is determined in an exact way. The relative importance of the aspects, as well as the values of the risk factors, was described by linguistic expressions that are modeled by using the Interval type-2 trapezoidal fuzzy numbers (IT2TrFNs). IT2FBWM was used to determine weight vectors of risk factors. The priority of failures is determined according to the Action priority model which proposed by AIAG & VDA (Automotive Industry Action Group and German Association of the Automotive Industry). The proposed methodology is tested in a Case study where the real-life data originated from a company from the Republic of Serbia that operates as a part of an automotive supply chain.

Abstract: Background: Neonates and infants are susceptible to hypoxaemia in the perioperative period. The aim of this study was to analyse interventions related to anaesthesia tracheal intubations in this European cohort and identify their clinical consequences. Methods: We performed a secondary analysis of tracheal intubations of the European multicentre observational trial (NEonate and Children audiT of Anaesthesia pRactice IN Europe [NECTARINE]) in neonates and small infants with difficult tracheal intubation. The primary endpoint was the incidence of difficult intubation and the related complications. The secondary endpoints were the risk factors for severe hypoxaemia attributed to difficult airway management, and 30 and 90 day outcomes. Results: Tracheal intubation was planned in 4683 procedures. Difficult tracheal intubation, defined as two failed attempts of direct laryngoscopy, occurred in 266 children (271 procedures) with an incidence (95% confidence interval [CI]) of 5.8% (95% CI, 5.1e6.5). Abstract: Introduction The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic has placed intensive care units (ICU) triage at the center of bioethical discussions. National and international triage guidelines emerged from professional and governmental bodies and have led to controversial discussions about which criteria—e.g. medical prognosis, age, life-expectancy or quality of life—are ethically acceptable. The paper presents the main points of agreement and disagreement in triage protocols and reviews the ethical debate surrounding them. Sources of data Published articles, news articles, book chapters, ICU triage guidelines set out by professional societies and health authorities. Areas of agreement Points of agreement in the guidelines that are widely supported by ethical arguments are (i) to avoid using a first come, first served policy or quality-adjusted life-years and (ii) to rely on medical prognosis, maximizing lives saved, justice as fairness and non-discrimination. Areas of controversy Points of disagreement in existing guidelines and the ethics literature more broadly regard the use of exclusion criteria, the role of life expectancy, the prioritization of healthcare workers and the reassessment of triage decisions. Growing points Improve outcome predictions, possibly aided by Artificial intelligence (AI); develop participatory approaches to drafting, assessing and revising triaging protocols; learn from experiences with implementation of guidelines with a view to continuously improve decision-making. Areas timely for developing research Examine the universality vs. context-dependence of triaging principles and criteria; empirically test the appropriateness of triaging guidelines, including impact on vulnerable groups and risk of discrimination; study the potential and challenges of AI for outcome and preference prediction and decision-support.

Abstract: Introduction It is unclear whether adiposity leads to changes in movement behaviors, and there is a lack of compositional analyses of longitudinal data which focus on these associations. Using a compositional approach, this study aimed to examine the associations between baseline adiposity and 7-year changes in physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB) among elderly women. We also explored the longitudinal associations between change in adiposity and change in movement-behavior composition. Methods This longitudinal study included 176 older women (mean baseline age 62.8 (4.1) years) from Central Europe. Movement behavior was assessed by accelerometers and adiposity was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis at baseline and follow-up. A set of multivariate least-squares regression analyses was used to examine the associations of baseline adiposity and longitudinal changes in adiposity as explanatory variables with longitudinal changes in a 3-part movement-behavior composition consisting of SB, light PA (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) as outcome variables. Results No significant associations were found between baseline adiposity and longitudinal changes in the movement-behavior composition (p > 0.05). We found significant associations of changes in body mass index (BMI) and fat mass percentage (FM%) with changes in the movement-behavior composition. An increase in BMI was associated with an increase of SB at the expense of LPA and MVPA (β = 0.042, p = 0.009) and with a decrease of MVPA in favor of SB and LPA (β = − 0.059, p = 0.037). An increase in FM% was significantly associated only with an increase of SB at the expense of LPA and MVPA (β = 0.019, p = 0.031). Conclusions This study did not support the assumption that baseline adiposity is associated with longitudinal changes in movement behaviors among elderly women, but we found evidence for change-to-change associations, suggesting that a 7-year increase in adiposity is associated with a concurrent increase of SB at the expense of LPA and MVPA and with a concurrent decrease of MVPA in favor of LPA and SB. Public health interventions are needed to simultaneously prevent weight gain and promote physically active lifestyle among elderly women.

Abstract: The ability of flying continuously over prolonged periods of time has become target of numerous research studies performed in recent years in both the fields of civil aviation and unmanned drones. High-altitude platform stations are aircrafts that can operate for an extended period of time at altitudes 17 km above sea level and higher. The aim of this paper is to design and optimize a wing for such platforms and computationally investigate its aerodynamic performance. For that purpose, two-objective genetic algorithm, class shape transformation and panel method were combined and used to define different airfoils with the highest lift-to-drag ratio and maximal lift coefficient. Once the most suitable airfoil was chosen, polyhedral half-wing was modeled and its aerodynamic performances were estimated using the computational fluid dynamics approach. Flow simulations of transitional flow at various angles-of-attack were realized in ANSYS FLUENT and various quantitative and qualitative results are presented, such as aerodynamic coefficient curves and flow visualizations. In the end, daily mission of the aircraft is simulated and its energy requirement is estimated. In order to be able to cruise above Serbia in July, an aircraft weighing 150 kg must accumulate 17 kWh of solar energy per day.
