One of the safest and most effective ways, used by Russian Federation to transmit harmful propaganda, both inside and outside of Ukraine, with intention of igniting public unrest and conflict within the country, is influencing the historical consciousness as a part of mass consciousness, both in context of its own citizens and Ukrainian citizens, as well as the international community. To put this plan into reality, Russian Federation has developed, formed and realized a very aggressive historical doctrine. Analysis and exposure of this historical doctrine, its final goal, focuses and tasks, as well as its main methods of realization in modern, geopolitical context is one of the top priority tasks to ensure national security of Ukraine. It concerns Ukrainian participation in a prolonged hybrid war, in which Russian Federation actively utilizes political, economic, information’s perception psychological, cyber and military methods. Historic doctrine as a modern phenomenon is a method of ensuring political, cultural, and political or any other loyalty of big social entities, as well as securing ideological and political control over said entities. The most important trait of the historical doctrine is usage of history in internal politics, law practice, and ideological sphere, in diplomatic and military conflicts. An aggressive historical doctrine is developing in Russian Federation, with only one task – influencing mass consciousness with a historical narrative that is controlled by the ruling Russian elite. This is done with intention of converting history from an academic subject into a “soft force” weapon for the political battlefield. This historical doctrine has a tendency of intensifying governmental control on historical research, controlling the historical community, increasing criminal responsibility for any historical activity that goes against the narrative (publication of scientific research, speaking out publicly, polemics, etc). One of the most currently relevant aspects of this historical doctrine is its’ usage in the hybrid war with Ukraine, which is of increasing threat to the national security of Ukraine.

Recent interest in modern climate change has stimulated extensive scientific study into past societal responses to climate variability. However, examining climate change and society as a historical narrative drawing upon politics, economics, and settlement patterns does not provide a direct link between climate and society. Given that most inhabitants of the premodern world engaged in agriculture and/or pastoralism, examining chronological correlations between climate and foodways, not as a historical narrative but as a longterm socioenvironmental process, has the potential to identify direct societal adaptations to a changing environment. From South Greece there is evidence for drier conditions at the end of the Late Bronze Age. Is the disappearance of writing, art, and many known settlements at the end of the Bronze Age an example of collapse in the face of inability to adapt to climate change? This is a difficult question to answer given the coarse resolution of many of our archaeological and climatic datasets. Settlement faunal records suggest that food production systems became increasingly homogenous in Late Bronze Age Greece, potentially due to an elite control over various production systems that promoted intensification of certain products. However, in the first millennium B.C.E., animal husbandry, specifically, and food production systems, more broadly, became more heterogenous, and a proportional increase in goats in areas with less rainfall was likely an adaptive response to the drier climate. This paper examines the adaptive relationship between foodways and climate and argues for a process driven approach when explaining social responses to ancient climate change.

The author of the paper reveals theoretical and methodological prospects ofresearch in Ukrainian historical and medical local studies using approaches and means ofhistory of everyday life. The latter is already an approved direction of the Ukrainianhistoriography, which naturally covers the issues of providing and receiving medical care.However, this aspect is still far from full realization. A significant role in the actualizationof the direction belongs to local lore researchers, who were the first in Ukraine to applywhat is today called the "anthropological concept of history". The methodologicalparadigm of the medical branch of history of everyday life based on interdisciplinarity,attention to interpersonal communication "doctor/healer – patient", their typical andatypical patterns. Behavior of physicians and patients, their relationships, perceptions ofhealth care, its conditions, quality and accessibility attract an attention of researchers ofeveryday life. Through a multidisciplinary approach and a study of a cultural and socialcontext, it has become possible to ask how society had viewed physicians and treatmentprocedures, how the concept of health had changed, in which cases a person had decidedto see a doctor or avoid medical care. Author concludes that everyday life history opensup a vast prospect of scientific search in the near future for researchers of historicalmedical local studies. The most promising out of these is the behavioral approach, whichcould be used from the point of view of behavior and communication of actors, grantingto the patient "voting right", application of qualitative research methods and involvementof the micro-historical approach combined with macro-historical and ethnographicachievements. The latter is especially relevant for studying problems of health care forrural residents. It is also appropriate to use specific instruments of oral history. Analysisof the existing historical narrative on the topic shows that qualitative realization of abovementionedpotential possibilities at the current stage of development of the nationalhistoriography is possible only at the local level. The approach “from below” common forhistory of everyday life is the most effective at the level of cities and regions; therefore,the historiography confidently uses inductive way. Thus, that is a challenge for local loreresearchers.

In the core of the research is a modern Russian historical narrative for children. On the example of the historical adventure fiction “The Ghost of the Network” written by Tamara Kryukova the work identifies and describes the main characteristics of this type of narrative due to the trends in modern children’s literature, features of modern teenagers’ world perception, changed conditions of social life, etc. The artistic narrative is analyzed in the mainstream of discursiveness due to its open and fluid nature, the cultural and historical nature of the narrative artistic discourse and its inclusion in a wide cultural and discursive context, the polyphonic nature of the stories that form the basis of the narrative discourse of Tamara Kryukova’s children story “The Ghost of the Network”, which covers almost 700 years old and takes the reader to the distant era of Ancient Russia, the main “ingredients” of the historical narrative include the author’s fantasy in the form of a ghost from ancient history, which frightens a scientist who finds himself on a night highway, completely deserted by a mystical coincidence. The leading method is narrative analysis. Thematic and discourse analysis is used as an auxiliary method. In the course of the study, conclusions are drawn. The work reveals the features of a modern children’s historical narrative, combining elements of an adventure-fantasy genre, interweaving the past and the present, history and fiction, taking into account the peculiarities of a modern teenager, living not only in real, but also in virtual space. The enrichment of this story allows the authors to achieve cultural and historical continuity, give the text a semantic dimension, educational meanings, and include modern linguocultural national knowledge in it.

Al-Andalus, as a climax for Islamic civilization, arouses the interest of both literature and cinema. For that remarkable reason, the interest towards Andalus, fictionalized as an “ideal” more than an environment, appears in the second half of the 19th century in Turkish literature. This is a period through which Ottoman Empire kept declining and people tried to find means to sustain the Empire. Abdulhak Hâmid’s theatre play Târik yahut Endulus’un Fethi (1879) (Târik or The Conquer of Al-Andalus), in such a period for the Empire still holding the caliphate which is the key of an earthly authority of Islam, reaches a significance as an historical narrative in accordance with putting forward the terms like “conquest” and “heroism” on the basis of Andalus image. However, Hâmid combined the idealized Andalus image, and accordingly the themes “conquest” and “heroism” with earthly love, and the concept of love became a helpful pattern to idealize Andalus. Tunisian director Nacer Khemir’s movie The Dove’s Lost Necklace (1991) presents a similar Andalus idealization with a viewpoint from Arab world. Furthermore, similarly to Hâmid’s play, love becomes once again a helpful pattern in fictionalizing an ideal-Andalus. By revealing two different viewpoints from Islamic civilization, one of Abdulhak Hâmid, who is an Ottoman intellectual and Reform period author, and the other of Tunisian director Nacer Khemir, this article discusses how those two artists idealized the concept of al-Andalus and interpreted that idealization in the age they lived. Positioning the woman within the context of love as a helpful pattern in those artworks is the collateral subject to the article.

The article is focused on analysis of existing understanding of narrative method of teaching by modern scholars, as well as the specific ways and goals of its application in their everyday practice. Particular consideration is given to exploration of narratives in social work education in higher education settings. Detailed description and in-depth analysis is provided on the use of narratives in teaching social work Bachelor program courses at the School of Social Work of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. An analysis is provided for the content of topics of studies where such narratives are used like life history, oral narratives etc. The presented specific cases of narrative use cover the following issues: students’ creating and telling the narrative on behalf of the imagined character with the relevant characteristics; using visualization (photos), based on which the narrative is created; creating and delivering the future narrative by participation of the other character; understanding the history narrative; analysis and interpretation of narratives collected by the use of oral narrative or life story. It is claimed that using the narrative promotes students’ activization, empowers them for the project work, enables their gaining new experience and experiential learning. Moreover, developing and telling the narratives enhances students’ intense communication and creativity as well as their engagement into the education process which is of high importance within the distance learning framework. The narrative is of high value for the social work education and training as this approach ensures developing capacity to listen to the clients’ stories, to analyze and to understand their life stories, to assist in changing clients’ lives by using success stories.

Background The lives of individuals are infinitely fascinating, especially when viewed at the intersection of their relationship with other people and their environment. Of interest in this article are the incidents of childbirth and the role of midwife and doctor in these crucial life events. Perhaps of greater significance is the story of those on board this one voyage of the Steadfast within the grand narrative of British immigration to Australia in the nineteenth century. Aim This article aims to demonstrate that it was the human cargo and their need of health care in the voyage of the Steadfast, which contributed to the historical narrative of immigration and quarantine, the prelude to life in the colonial environment. Method This is qualitative research using historical methodology involving the selection of available documents. The primary document sourced is that of the surgeon-superintendent’s journal on the Steadfast. The methodology used is narrative, recording the medical information as well as providing background context for the main characters for the purpose of situating them in the immigration story. Findings Health care, particularly maternity care, on immigration ships was limited. Birthing at sea was a dangerous process for an immigrant woman often resulting in her death, the death of her infant or both mother and child could perish. If disease occurred during the sea voyage, then quarantine of the ship and passengers was instigated on arrival at Sydney Harbour. Discussion This article draws on the journal notes of the surgeon superintendent which logs the health incidents of immigrants requiring midwifery, nursing and medical care on a sea voyage from London to the colony of New South Wales in the mid-nineteenth century. This article focuses on the maternity events and the necessity for quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the colony of New South Wales.

Most of the Indians now have forgotten that Kohima was the scene of an Allied victory in the World War II; the victory was so decisive that it changed the contours of the war in Asia. In this significant battle of Kohima, the Japanese force tried to enter India from Naga Hills, advancing progressively into Asia after the success of their Burma campaign in 1941-42. But in Kohima they were defeated convincingly by the British Allied Forces which were helped by local inhabitants in the battle. The Japanese had broken down equally by disease and hunger thus left their plan to enter in India. The Battle of Kohima often refers by Nagas as a ‘forgotten battle’ and its heroes as the ‘forgotten heroes’. Easterine Kire Iralu’s Mari stands as a distinct novel as it commemorates the forgotten Battle of Kohima of 1944. The novel is a fascinating love story set in the midst of this war. It is an enchanting tale of Iralu’s aunt Khrielievu Mari O’ Leary who was engaged to a British sergeant Victor. The novel is written in form of a diary which Mari maintained during the war meticulously registering every event of her life. Mari is not just a story of a young girl falling in love but it’s a story of all those people who lived that war- time. This paper examines the impact of the battle of Kohima on the culture, identity and traditional values of Naga society which the writer has described in the backdrop of Mari’s life journey in the novel.

The Lasem batik industry underwent a significant dynamic change after the inauguration of batik as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO on October 2, 2009. The increasing growth of the batik industry in Lasem turned out to affect the decline in industrial ownership by Chinese-Indonesian business person. Although the Chinese-Indonesian business person served as an initiator in the Lasem batik industry, it does not guarantee their survival against a massive ownership transition. This article explores the changing dynamics of the Lasem batik industry from the perspective of the Chinese-Indonesian business person who still maintains the continuity of their business. Employing a qualitative method and a narrative study approach, this article seeks to deepen the historical narrative about the lives of six Chinese-Indonesian business persons in the Lasem batik industry. The findings show that since post-reformation until now, the ownership of the Lasem batik industry by Chinese-Indonesian business person continues to decline. Therefore, the expansion of the intra-ethnic network, identity hybridization, cultural acculturation, and authentication of batik motifs became the survival strategies of Chinese-Indonesian business persons to be resistant to industrial ownership transitions and survived competing in the Lasem batik business.

While some Nubian authors demanded a separate homeland in Egypt, the late Idris Ali remained committed to the idea of integration into Egyptian society. Ali agreed that a demeaning historical narrative had been imposed upon Egypt’s Nubians, but believed narratives could be rewritten. In his largely autobiographical novel Below the poverty line, Ali uses the defamiliarizing second-person narrative mode to showcase how a discouraging history is imposed on the Nubian subject. This mode also allows for a fluid positioning of the reader and subject, building both empathy and responsibility for the protagonist’s plight. For a narrative mode that has been frequently criticized as a mere gimmick, second-person narration’s unique power and fluidity is convincingly demonstrated in this novel.

The fact that the present state of evolution of settlement in a city is most often composed of remnants it’s past, superimposed and juxtaposed together with the new developments. This can be used to gain new insights on spatial history and dynamism of settlements evolution and also for spatial information approximation for historical narrative in general. This study attempts to trace and visualise the evolution and the spatial pattern of urban settlement distribution in Mangalore using GPS locations of historical buildings and structures from 600 AD. to 1970 AD. The study employs GIS and spatial statistical techniques such as spatial mean centre, standard distance, standard deviational ellipse, Average Nearest Neighbour, Kernel density and variable buffer model. It was found from the study that historical buildings and structures including temples and churches are closely associated with the evolution and distribution settlement in Mangalore. The study also substantiates the historical fact that the eventual intensification concentration of settlements in the current urban centre was largely influenced by colonial settlers. The temporal fluctuation of spatial mean centre of the city was also found in Mangalore.

This article wrestles with critical questions often cited in relation to Luke 2:22–4, the gospel writer’s description of two legal rituals (the sacrifice to complete purification after birth, and the consecration of a firstborn son) performed by Mary and Joseph at the Temple. In contrast with previous interpretations of this text, which have tended to conclude either that Luke has been misinformed about Jewish law, or that he simply is not interested in legal precision (thus creating a purely fictive narrative motivated by theological or literary concerns), this essay argues for a more nuanced reading of Luke’s account along a broader spectrum of Second Temple and early rabbinic legal interpretation, and in light of Luke’s claims about the genre and methodology of his gospel. By positioning Luke 2:22–4 among other examples of legal exegesis in ancient Judaism, particularly those that deal with the laws Luke cites, I conclude not only that the childbirth laws in the Torah leave multiple gaps that invite later interpretive differences, but that Luke’s own halakhic reading can be contextualized by comparable readings within the diversity of Second Temple interpretation.

The historical note is a familiar device in historical fiction. While such devices have begun to attract scholarly attention, the focus has typically been on the way they signal the genre’s relationship to truth. This article proposes instead to look at how historical notes rework an understanding of the story and its source material by breaking the frame between events retold in fiction, and narrative history. Frame breaking, or metalepsis, is the preserve of experimental fiction, and usually consists of authors placing themselves in their work, or characters engaging with their author. Behind this playful inversion lies a preoccupation with the porous boundaries established between ontologically distinct worlds. I contend that the same destabilising effect can be found in the transition from story to historical note, with the reader carrying ideas from the story into the world of narrative history, and vice versa. Rather than separating the story from ‘what actually happened’, historical notes perform the opposite function. Drawing on examples from literature, film, and TV, I argue that frame breaking in historical fiction inserts the ambiguities of art into a mode of historical representation that remains a popular means of disseminating the truth.

If the literature in the history of the Soviet space program is extremely prolific since the 1960s, including regarding cosmonaut embodiment, a lack remains regarding the contemporary reality of human spaceflight in Russia. As this article discusses, based on interviews and a long-term ethnography of the Russian training of astronauts from Western Europe, North America, and Japan, becoming an astronaut is to develop a legitimate body fitting dominant cultural and gendered models. Three mechanisms serve the manufacture of “heroes” and masculine bodies through the astronaut training: the historical narrative of human spaceflight; the values and virility attributes embed as part of the training; and the instruments used in the daily activity of astronauts (such as spacesuits). This manufacture of a legitimate body, characterized by masculinity and discipline inherited from the past, is a heuristic field for corporality and studies of global politics as it underlines how an interweaving of gender, Soviet heritage, and cultural fantasies frames the bodies of a professional elite.

Historians have so far analysed the historical narrative used for modern Lithuanian nation-building in terms of its structure, the main storylines and images, and the most important historical figures rooted in it. Previous studies have revealed how the narrative was constructed. However, less research has been done on how it was received by individual social groups. The article analyses the Lithuanian historical narrative promoted by partisans who participated in the anti-Soviet armed resistance in 1944–1953. The author discusses how the narrative was used to strengthen and perpetuate the struggle, and looks for connections between the organisational unification of the guerrilla fighters and their relationship with historical images and figures. She provides an outline of interpretations of history presented in writings by partisans of various ranks, and reveals features of the historical awareness of the resistance fighters. The main sources used for the research were publications (proclamations, bulletins, periodicals, etc) issued by the partisans. In addition, the author examines the pseudonyms used by 935 fighters, and the names that were given to their organisational units. Data from all three anti-Soviet resistance areas, southern, eastern and western Lithuania, are analysed.

Economic cycles have often become the landscape matrix, in a hybrid process of society-nature transformation, leaving distinct legacies in it. The coffee plantation showed great productivity in the Paraíba do Sul Valley to the detriment of forests, resulting in profound changes in geo-hydric cycles. Although the transformation by coffee has been significant on a spatial scale and in environmental changes, the Paraíba do Sul Valley landscape needs to be understood in a broader perspective. There were also other crops in the landscape inside or outside large estates. This work aims to recognize the spatial organization of these cultures and develop an understanding of the pattern of the coffee landscape, showing the performance of different social actors. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic review and analysis of historical agricultural manuals. Spatializing such past activities and social groups in the landscape shows us what was previously hidden, omitted by the traditional historical narrative This research showed that colonial knowledge developed a landscape compartmentalization, spatializing the crops according to pedological and topographic evidence.

Tournament theory posits that there are situations where winning matters a lot and, as a result, agent rewards are not proportional to performance. According to tournament theorists, the large pay differentials that exist between organizational levels are intended to motivate agents to exert greater effort in an attempt to win the prize. Although a large corpus of literature on tournaments has emerged over time, little is known about the social dynamics involved in tournaments. This article addresses this gap through a historical narrative concerning how Allied forces in World War II competed to capture Adolf Hitler’s famed Bavarian reception house, known to the world as the Eagle’s Nest.

Purpose An oral history of the development of health psychology in the United Kingdom. Methods Standard oral history methods produced interviews with 53 UK health psychologists, averaging 92 min in length. All interviewees entered the field from the 1970s to the 2000s, representing all four countries in the United Kingdom. A reconstructive mode of analysis, along with the few existing sources, was used to create a narrative of the history of health psychology in the United Kingdom. Audio recordings and transcripts will be archived for use by future researchers. Findings In the 1970s, medical schools in London recruited psychologists to teach, while also conducting pragmatic research on issues in healthcare. At the same time, some clinical psychologists began to work with physical health conditions in general hospitals. Partly influenced by developments in the United States and Europe, an identity of 'health psychology' developed and spread to researchers and practitioners doing work in psychology and health. In the 1980s, the field continued to attract researchers, including social psychologists working with health behaviours and outcomes, and clinical psychologists working in health care settings. During this time, it became formalized as a scientific field with the creation of the BPS Health Psychology Section, courses, and journals. In the 1990s, the field moved towards professional practice, which was controversial with other BPS divisions. However, it continued to grow and develop through the 2000s and 2010s. Conclusion Reflections on the development of UK health psychology represent the first historical narrative produced from oral testimony of those who were present at the time. Statement of Contribution What is already known on this subject? Health psychology emerged in the 1970s, initially in the United States following an APA Task Force report. It developed from a range of precursor movements including psychosomatic medicine, while in the United Kingdom medical psychology was an additional precursor. The development of health psychology has been discussed for a range of countries including the United States and others, but historical scholarship relating to the United Kingdom has been limited. What does this study add? From an oral history project, a narrative of UK health psychology's development is built up. Influences included opportunities at medical schools from the 1970s onward. Growing interest in health behaviours as a test of social psychology theory was important. The experiences of clinical psychologists working in health care settings are demonstrated. Multidisciplinary influences on the emergence and shaping of health psychology are evident.

The publication offers academic translations of fifteen stories from the major chronicles of the 9th–10th cent. AD written in Arabic and arranged after the ruling dynasties. These two centuries witnessed the genesis and further development of this very popular genre of historical narrative. The so-called “dynastic” chronicles display the events of the history of the Muslim Community by dividing it following the times of the rule of the Muslim sovereigns, the Caliphs. Such chronicles were authored by the Muslim as well as by the Christian authors. Concerning the composition of historical works, their texts can be described as “amalgamated” and comprise along with other information a certain type of stories, which are written in a “genre” of “belles-lettres”. They usually comprise dialogues and rather vivid descriptions of historical characters and their deeds. The chronicles, which these stories are extracted from are written by ad-Dinawari (d. 891), al-Ya‘kubi (d. 897), Eutichius (d. c. 940) and al-Muqaddasi (d. end X c.)2 . The translations are arranged in the chronological order and supplied with roman numerals. The publication is followed by a detailed commentary.The author declares that there is no conflict of interest.

The year 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the landmark publication on the bedside clinical use of a flow-directed catheter. The catheter, now known as the Swan-Ganz catheter, truly revolutionized practice and care of the critically ill. Use of the catheter proliferated nearly without rigorous validation or evidence base until a moratorium was called in regard to its use. This article describes the history of the development of the Swan-Ganz catheter, its uses, and its near downfall. The authors, both involved in educating clinicians in the use of the pulmonary artery catheter, hope that telling this story shares tribal knowledge and lessons learned with newer generations of nurses who did not experience the explosion of development and knowledge in the area of hemodynamic monitoring. Partly because of advances in technology, and the catheter’s application for heart failure in particular, use of the pulmonary catheter is being resurrected.

This article is a proposal of identity research through its process and narrative character. As a starting point I present a definition of identity understood as the whole life process of finding identification. Next I present my own model of auto/biography-narrative research inspired by hermeneutic and phenomenological traditions of thinking about experiencing reality. I treat auto/biography-narrative research as a means of exploratory conduct, based on the narrator’s biography data, also considering the researcher’s autobiographical thought. In the final part of the article I focus on showing the narrative structure of identity and autobiography. I emphasise this relation in definitions qualifying autobiography as written life narration and identity as a narration of autobiography.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief history of the evolution of the Diana Project and the Diana International Research Conference. The authors examine the impact of the publications, conferences and research contributions and consider key factors in the success of this collaborative research organization. They discuss the ongoing legacy, suggesting ways to extend this into the future. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses an historical narrative and a citation analysis. Findings The Diana Project was founded by five women professors in 1999 with the purpose of investigating women’s access to growth capital. Following a series of academic articles, and numerous presentations, the first Diana International Conference was held in Stockholm, Sweden. At this convening, 20 scholars from 13 countries shared their knowledge of women’s entrepreneurship, venture creation and growth, culminating in the first volume of the Diana Book Series. Since then, 14 international conferences have been held, resulting in 10 special issues of top academic journals and 11 books. More than 600 scholars have attended or participated in Diana conferences or publications. Research limitations/implications Contributions from the Diana International Conferences’ special issues of journals and books have advanced theory across topics, levels, geographies and methods. Articles emerging from Diana scholars are some of the top contributions about women’s entrepreneurship and gender to the field of entrepreneurship. Future research directions are included. Practical implications This analysis demonstrates the success of a unique woman-focused collaborative research initiative and identifies key success factors, suggesting how these might be expanded in the future. Social implications To date, more than 600 scholars have participated in the Diana International Conferences or publications. Diana is the only community dedicated to rigorous and relevant research about gender and women’s entrepreneurship. Going forward, efforts to expand work on education for women’s entrepreneurship, women entrepreneurship faculty and careers, and women entrepreneurs, gender and policy will take place to extend this legacy. Originality/value The paper is unique in that it is the first to show the substantial legacy and impact of the Diana project since its inception in 1999. Further, it demonstrates how a feminist approach to entrepreneurial principles can yield insights about this unique research initiative and collaborative organization.

The present paper analyses short prose texts written in the 1830s–1840s under the generic label “legend” either in their titles or subtitles. The aim of the research is to ascertain whether such texts followed a similar generic pattern. The article shows that the chosen texts share a network of constituent properties, which indicates their generic cognateness and allows the reader to classify them as literary legends. The Russian literary legend of the 1830s–1840s may be characterized as a historical narrative relating extraordinary, sometimes criminal events. Though the audience is likely to disbelieve the story, the narrator finds it necessary to communicate it, as it contains an important truth or idea missing from conventional sources. Despite the similarity of the generic pattern, the genre had fuzzy boundaries in the first half of the nineteenth century, which is revealed in numerous title alterations, inconsistency in using cognate labels (“skazanie”, “predanie”, “byl’”), the absence of legend cycles, and a paucity of discussions about the genre. However, it can be concluded that the literary legend of the time was the grain from which the late-nineteenth century genre developed.

Staging America is a celebration and exploration of eight American playwrights whose careers all began in the twenty-first century. It is aimed at scholars, students, and theatregoers who are interested in the ways in which the featured plays outline national public issues as reflected through the private anxieties of the individual.

This article examines the historical representation of the Jinshin Rebellion as a foundational event in the Nihon shoki and other eighth-century Japanese texts. Focusing on the differences between two alternative stories of Tenmu’s departure from the Ōmi capital to Yoshino, I argue that the Nihon shoki contains traces of several competing historical narratives that are the expression of a historical process: the political struggles over the historical record and the representation of Tenmu’s legitimacy in the early eighth century when the Nihon shoki was being compiled.

“Brazil, the time has come to hear the Marias, Mahins, Marielles, Males,” goes the theme song of the Brazilian samba school that won 2019’s carnival competition (Mendonca, 2019). Carrying the names of important Black characters of Brazilian history, the samba school intended to counteract the mainstream historical narrative that primarily praises White heroes (Mendonca, 2019). Marielle, born and raised in a Rio de Janeiro favela, played against all the stiff stigmas experienced by Black and poor women (Londono, 2018) and turned into one of the most voted-for councilwomen in her city (Londono, 2018). Marielle’s skin color, African-Brazilian hair, and clothing contrasted in a city hall of mostly White wealthy men (Campos & Machado, 2018). The different way they treated her and her predominantly non-White team conveyed the impression that the city hall was not a place for them.

Objective: this paper articulates how three Nightingale scholars applied their theoretical reflections to Florence Nightingale’s farreaching anticipation of the year 1999 and to her comprehensive definition of “Health” derived from her 1893 essay “Sick-nursing and Health-nursing.” Method: this is a historical narrative paper. With intentions to explore how Nightingale’s insights might inform today’s nursing culture and enhance nursing practice, these scholars joined a team of civil society activists to craft the Nightingale Declaration for A Healthy World as the founding credo of the Nightingale Initiative for Global Health. To follow in Nightingale’s footsteps for more than two decades, these scholars since developed methods to increase public awareness of global health concerns and to engage today’s nurses and concerned citizens in this public advocacy. Results: project demonstration results include specific advocacy for the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals — “Global Goals” targeted to achieve universal outcomes specific to “Health” and across the wider scope of social and environmental health determinants — all anticipated by Nightingale throughout her 40-year career. Conclusion: given today’s severe global health concerns, these scholars’ theoretical reflections identify challenges to contemporary nursing culture — calling for methods developed to strengthen nursing’s voice in the global public arena. Objetivo: este artigo articula como três estudiosas de Nightingale aplicaram suas reflexões teóricas à antecipação de longo alcance de Florence Nightingale do ano de 1999 e à sua definição abrangente de “Saúde” derivada de seu ensaio de 1893 “Enfermagem de enfermos e enfermagem em saúde”. Método: trata-se de um artigo narrativo histórico. Com a intenção de explorar como os insights de Nightingale podem fundamentar a cultura de enfermagem de hoje e aprimorar a prática de enfermagem, essas acadêmicas se juntaram a uma equipe de ativistas da sociedade civil para elaborar a Declaração Nightingale por um Mundo Saudável como o credo fundador da Iniciativa Nightingale para a Saúde Global. Para seguir os passos de Nightingale por mais de duas décadas, essas estudiosas então desenvolveram métodos para aumentar a consciência pública sobre as preocupações com a saúde global e para envolver as enfermeiras e os cidadãos preocupados de hoje nessa defesa pública. Resultados: os resultados da demonstração do projeto incluem a defesa específica dos Objetivos de Desenvolvimento do Milênio e Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável das Nações Unidas - “Objetivos Globais” direcionados para alcançar resultados universais específicos para “Saúde” e em todo o escopo mais amplo dos determinantes sociais e ambientais de saúde - todos antecipados por Nightingale ao longo de sua carreira de 40 anos. Conclusão: dadas as graves preocupações atuais com a saúde global, as reflexões teóricas dessas estudiosas identificam desafios para a cultura contemporânea da enfermagem - clamando por métodos desenvolvidos para fortalecer a voz da enfermagem na arena pública global. Objetivo: este artículo articula cómo tres académicas Nightingale aplicaron sus reflexiones teóricas a la gran anticipación proyectiva de Florence Nightingale con respecto al año 1999 y a su definición integral de “Salud” derivada de su ensayo de 1893 de título “Cuidados a los enfermos y cuidados sanitarios”. Método: se trata de un artículo narrativo histórico. Con la intención de explorar cómo las ideas de Nightingale podrían fundamentar la cultura de Enfermería actual y mejorar la práctica de la Enfermería, estas académicas se unieron a un equipo de activistas de la sociedad civil para elaborar la Declaración de Nightingale para un mundo saludable como el credo fundador de la Iniciativa Nightingale para la Salud Global. Para seguir los pasos de Nightingale durante más de dos décadas, estas académicas desarrollaron métodos para aumentar la conciencia pública sobre las preocupaciones de salud global e involucrar a las enfermeras y ciudadanos interesados de hoy en esta defensa pública. Resultados: los resultados de la demostración del proyecto incluyen una promoción específica para las Metas de Desarrollo del Milenio y Metas de Desarrollo Sustentable - “Metas Globales” de las Naciones Unidas dirigidas a lograr resultados universales específicos de “Salud” y en el ámbito más amplio de los determinantes de la salud sociales y ambientales, todo anticipado por Nightingale a lo largo de sus 40 años de carrera. Conclusión: dadas las graves preocupaciones de salud mundial de la actualidad, las reflexiones teóricas de estas académicas identifican desafíos a la cultura de la Enfermería contemporánea, y exigen métodos desarrollados para fortalecer la voz de la Enfermería en el ámbito público mundial.

Financial crises have large deleterious effects on economic activity, and as such have been the focus of a large body of research. This study surveys the existing literature on financial crises, exploring how crises are measured, whether they are predictable, and why they are associated with economic contractions. Historical narrative techniques continue to form the backbone for measuring crises, but there have been exciting developments in using quantitative data as well. Crises are predictable with growth in credit and elevated asset prices playing an especially important role; recent research points convincingly to the importance of behavioral biases in explaining such predictability. The negative consequences of a crisis are due to both the crisis itself but also to the imbalances that precede a crisis. Crises do not occur randomly, and, as a result, an understanding of financial crises requires an investigation into the booms that precede them.

Australian government administrators and private enterprise took full advantage of the opportunities made possible by civil aviation in Australia’s Northern Territory. Yet, there is a common perception among Territorians that there is more on display and known about the defence aviation heritage of the Territory. Considering the long-term impact civil aviation has had on Territorians and their way of life, this paper queries this representation of its aviation past. This is achieved through a heritage audit, alongside an exploration of primary and secondary historical resources, and other forms of presentation. This paper highlights existing gaps in the representation of civil aviation heritage in the Northern Territory and suggests a way forward so that this significant historical narrative is not forgotten.

The article is dedicated to the reconstruction of national historical narratives in light of national stamp publishing. The research is based on the study of the pictorial aspect of the postage stamps of the Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918-1920 as an expression of state policy towards the development of the national postal service that played an important role in the process of state-building. The diachronic analysis method gives an opportunity to study the process of transformation of postage stamps from the philatelic material to the state of cultural and historical monument. Analytical study of catalogued postage stamps with the general narrative of the past state postal structure of the Ukrainian People’s Republic is defined as the Ukrainian philatelic heritage. Postage stamps as an element of the statehood of Ukraine in the first half of the twentieth century formed the basis of modern national stamp publishing in contemporary narrative of historical memory

Monks writing at Saint-Clément, Metz, over roughly two hundred years produced conflicting images of Bishop Theodoric I (965–84). In earlier texts, he is the monks’ benefactor, in later sources, their foe. Historians have sought to flatten this contrast, partly because of their assumptions about monastic reform. This paper offers an alternative reading that questions those assumptions. It suggests that the evolution of Theodoric's image reflects changing ideas about monastic reform and the proper relationship between bishops and monks. It also cautions against accepting narratives – medieval or modern – that obscure the fluidity of such ideas and relationships.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the contribution of Benzaemon Inoue and Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) in the early development of what came to be known as quality control (QC) circles. This paper analyses archival records including journals, books, documents such as the SEI Deming prize-winning submission of 1962 and private letters sent by Benzaemon Inoue to the author Kenneth Hopper. Methodology/Approach: This paper uses the analytically structured history approach. This methodology is used to interpret and document history as an analytic historical narrative and must describe such things as causation, events and concepts. In addition, the narrative must be framed in the context of the time when the events took place. Findings: There are three main findings: firstly, that SEI first developed QC circles and won the 1962 Deming Prize based on QC circles; secondly that SEI used societal and cultural conditions in Japan to encourage participation by the workers in improving quality; and thirdly, that the most important method of participation for SEI was suggestion systems. Research limitations/contributions: The primary data for this paper have been drawn from various archival records, which are for the most part not peer reviewed. Wherever possible, triangulation of evidence has been undertaken to mitigate the inherent risk of bias. The main contribution is an evaluation of the roles of Benzaemon Inoue and SEI in the early development of QC circles and total quality management (TQM). Originality/value: The originality of this paper lies in examining Benzaemon Inoue's and SEI's contribution to the development of QC circles. The importance in the history of quality management of their Deming Prize winning submission of 1962 has been underestimated.
