The major aims of this study were mainly to determine and describe the extent of farmers’ crop productivity and also explore the relationship between the 12 selected characteristics of the farmers with their crop productivity level. The study was designed with a mixed-method approach where both qualitative and quantitative analyses are blended in a rational way to have a deeper understanding of research problems. The study was conducted in Dumki Upazilla under Patuakhali district, Bangladesh. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 110 farmers except landless engaged in crop production. Data were collected by face to face interview using a pre-tested interview schedule during the period from March 10 to April 15, 2016. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical measures and computer software like SPSS. Pearson's Product Moment coefficient of correlation results showed that out of 12 independent variables, the correlation coefficients of 7 variables had a positive and significant relationship with their level of crop productivity. The stepwise multiple regression analyses stated that only 4 variables such as communication exposure, innovativeness, risk orientation and training experience had a significant contribution to the farmers' crop productivity level and also accounted for 52.8 per cent of the total variation in productivity index. This study also showed some problems which were faced by the farmers during crop production. If these problems can be solved, the farmers’ crop productivity level will be increased.

The coastal region of Bangladesh is highly vulnerable due to its low adaptive capacity, dense population, flat topography and exposure to various natural disasters such as cyclone, storm surges, sea level rise, tidal floods, bank erosion etc. In addition to present vulnerability, climate change will bring detrimental impact on socio-economic performance, health, and livelihood of the coastal population. This study has been conducted to assess the vulnerabilities of the coastal region of Bangladesh by considering the IPCC framework of vulnerability studies and using multivariate statistical techniques. A total of 31 indicators have been used of which 24 are socio-economic and 7 are natural (exposure) indicators and these indicators have been retrieved from the secondary source. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) has been applied to find unequal weights of all indicators. Afterward, 7 vulnerability groups (Principal Components - PCs) have been retained which eigenvalue greater than one in accordance with Kaiser Criterion. Demographic Vulnerability (PC1), Economic Vulnerability (PC2), Agricultural Vulnerability (PC3), Water Vulnerability (PC4), Health Vulnerability (PC5), Climate Vulnerability (PC6) and Infrastructural Vulnerability (PC7) are the principle vulnerable groups considering both present (2013) and the future (2050) climate change scenarios. Spatial maps of each group have been generated to assess the regional variation of above mentioned multispectral vulnerability profile across the coastal region of Bangladesh. Climate change will change dramatically the future vulnerability profile which will be alarming for agro-ecological systems of that region. The findings of this study might be useful for policy makers as well as planners.

The study aimed at analyzing the fluctuation, and production-price relationship of ginger in Bangladesh. Nineteen years (1975 to 2013) time series data of area, production and prices of ginger, collected from Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics were used to analyze the simplest method for fluctuation, and the Koyck model of distributed lag. The extent of annual price fluctuation of ginger ranged between -50 to 63 percent, while the fluctuation of area, production and yield ranged between-5 to 13, -17 to 22 and -20 to 11 percent, respectively. The study revealed that ginger production in Bangladesh had been influenced by the average price lag value formed in the market. The most striking result of the study was that the time required to get an effect on ginger production for the changes of ginger prices in Bangladesh was 19.83 years. This result shows that the farmers are very enthusiastic for growing ginger, the widely grown major spice crop. The correlation/regression coefficients indicated that the changes in lag values of the prices had a positive influence on production. It may be recommended that to keep the ginger price fluctuation under control, sustainable ginger farming and establishment of an efficient marketing organization is necessary.The Agriculturists 2017; 15(1) 01-09

The student’s performance plays an important role in producing the best quality graduate who will responsible for the country’s economic growth and social development. The labor market also concerns with student’s performance because the fresh graduate students are considered as an employee depends on their academic performance. So, identification of the reason behind student’s performance variation provides valuable information for planning education and policies. Many researchers try to find out the reason with different types of data mining approaches in different countries. However, none of them worked with Bangladeshi students. This paper proposed a model for identifying the key factors of variation Bangladeshi students’ academic performance and predicts their results. This paper proposes a model which able to identify the students who need special attention. Different types of feature selection methods were used such as Co-relation, Chi-Square and Euclidean distance to select valuable features and feature selections result through decision tree, Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbor and Artificial Neural Network classifiers algorithm were compared. The performance analysis is done by using student SGPA and review on given facilities from a university. From the performance analysis result it is found that, decreasing number of classes in dataset, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) (93.70%) performs better than Decision Tree (DT) (92.18%), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) (77.74%) and Naive Bayes (NB) (68.33%). However, an increasing number of classes in dataset the DT perform better than ANN, KNN, NB.

In today's world business are becoming online based. Companies sell their products and seek for consumer's feedback. When all the consumer writes their review about that's a product, It's becomes difficult to say that product is good or not based on their review. That's where Deep learning come. By using this, we can extract opinion or sentiment from the text which is written by the consumer. This is sentiment analysis. It can classify the emotional status of that review. Our project detects opinion from consumer's review whether it is good or bad. We use SVM, Naive Bayes algorithm and some methods. We use the Naive Bayes algorithm because we want to know how often words occur in the document. And then we use SVM for classifying whether words are positive or negative. For our researching purpose, we use the Amazon consumer review data set, which was available online. Some methods that we are using for preprocessing and cleaned the document where just words are left. We trained our model so well with twenty-four thousand data. So, it will give us the best accuracy and we make this model with the best algorithm and after that, it gives the accuracy of 98.39%. This project will help us in real life when we are having trouble with product reviews. Our machine will help us to determine which review is good and which review is bad and make a category of a positive and negative review and saves our time.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is one of the most common general surgical procedure. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to observe the surgical outcomes of the patients after clipless laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methodology: This case series were performed in the Department of Surgery at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College & Hospital, Dhaka from June 2014 to April 2015. After several modifications, the success of intracorporeal “separate knotting of cystic artery and duct” was observed with Vicryl and was successfully used separate ligation of cystic artery and duct (SLAD) with Vicryl 1/0 in symptomatic cholelithiasis patients. Result: A total number of 50 cases were undergone elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Most of the patients were female (80.0%). Average age of patients was 39 yr (15-65). There was no bile leak or other complications related to ligature. The time taken for tie varied from 2 to 4 minutes (average 3 min). There were 10(25.0%) acute calculus cholecystitis, including empyema, gangrenous cholecystitis. No patient had port infection. The marine dried fishes have the demand both in domestic and international market. Bangladesh has a great potentiality to earn huge foreign exchange by exporting marine dry fishes. The present study was designed to analyze the supply chain and to examine marketing efficiency of marine dry fish in Bangladesh. Data were collected from 170 stakeholders and 9 export oriented firms/agencies using face to face semi-structured interviews considering 9 major species of marine fishes. A number of FGDs were conducted to supplement the information collected through survey method. The study areas were purposively selected. Three types of market such as primary market, secondary market and consumer market were considered for data gathering. High priced fish demanded high marketing cost resulting higher marketing margin and profit compared to low priced fish. Processing and transportation costs were also higher for high valued species compared to the low valued ones. Marketing margin and marketing profit were very high in export market compared to domestic market. Background: Severe mental illness like schizophrenia has far-reaching consequence for both patients and caregivers and their relatives and they also experience feeling of loss and grief. They are confronted with uncertainty and emotion of shame, guilt and anger like the patients they feel stigmatized and socially isolated. Caring for a family member with schizophrenia is an enduring stressor and causes considerable amount of burden. Objective: To assess mental health status of the caregivers of schizophrenia patients. Methodology: This descriptive cross sectional study was done among the caregivers of schizophrenia patients in outpatient and inpatient department of National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Dhaka, Bangladesh from September 2010 to February 2011. A semi-structured Questionnaire and General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) were applied to the caregivers of schizophrenia patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Among the respondents whose GHO-28 score were 4 or above Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Non Patient (SCID-I/NP) version was applied to identify psychiatric disorders among the caregivers of schizophrenia. Results: Out of 272 respondents most of them were female (88.97%), housewife (72.42%) of 21 to 50 yrs age (80.51%). In this study 22.43% of respondents were suffering from different types of mental disorders. Among them major depressive disorder were most prevalent (11.8%). Other psychiatric disorders were found generalized anxiety disorder (4.8%), pain disorder (2.9%). Less common were panic disorder, social phobia, adjustment disorder and undifferentiated somatoform disorder (0.7% in each type). Conclusions: Significant proportions of the caregiver of schizophrenic patients were suffering from psychiatric disorders that did not get any psychiatric treatment. Background: Suicide is a public health problem too often neglected by researchers, health policy makers and the medical profession. In the year 2000, approximately one million people died of suicide which represents a global mortality rate of 16 per 100,000. According to WHO estimates for the year 2020 and based on current trends approximately 1.53 million people will die from suicide and 10-20 times more people will attempt suicide worldwide. This represents on average 1 death per 20 seconds and 1 attempt every 1-2 seconds. No nationwide survey on suicidal risk factors has yet been conducted in Bangladesh. Reports from police records, Media, court, hospitals and the focused study on selected population indicate that suicide is a public health problem in Bangladesh. The aim of this study was to unearth the potential risk factors of suicide or suicidal attempts and to assess psychiatric illness, non psychiatric co-morbidity, individual’s behavioral and physical factor, familial risk factors and socio-demographic risk factors of suicide and its attempts. Study Design and Setting: A case control study was carried out by members of the Department of Medicine, Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College and Hospital at Mominpur,Haowlee and Jibonnagar unions under three Upazilla of district Chuadanga,. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 16. Results: A total 230 subjects (113 cases and 117 controls) were interviewed. Mean age among cases was 29.6±12.8 years and controls were 29.7±12.9 years.Majority of the participants, 65.5% of cases and 63.2% of controls were aged between 20-39 years. Among cases 38.9% were male and among the controls 42.7% were male.Among cases 30.1% and among controls 27.4% had less than 4 family members. More than half of the participants, among cases (58.4%) and among controls (55.6%) had between 4- 6 members in the family. Economic status was also similar in two groups.Problem of love affair (OR 5.2), Personal problem (OR 11.9), Feeling of economic hardship (OR 2.4) appeared to have statistically significant association with suicidal attempt. Problem with relatives (OR 3.8), death of near relative (OR 0.9) and poor academic performance (OR 1.6) didn’t appear to have any association with risk of suicidal attempt. History of chronic disease (OR 2.9) showed statistically significant association but long term physical disability (OR 4.4) and physical problems didn’t appear to have any significant association with suicidal attempt. History of suicidal attempt by any relative (OR 4.2) and previous attempt to suicide (OR 7.4) appeared as highly significant factor for suicide. Not being reared by biological parents (OR 3.2), marital disharmony (OR 4.0), Conflict within the family (OR 6.9) appeared to be strongly associated with suicidal attempts. Suicidal attempts of participants were significantly associated with sleeping disturbance (OR 2.3), uncertainty about future (7.2), impulsivity (OR 13.8), and history of criminal behavior (OR 2.1). Conclusion: Case control study on the risk factors of suicide in rural area of South-West Bangladesh revealed that the married female especially the younger age from unitary family of low income group are more vulnerable to commit suicide or parasuicide. Several emotional factors, presence of chronic diseases, familial suicidal predisposition, individual factor and mental state, premorbid persionality and psychiatric syndrome appeared to have significant association with suicidal attempts. Aims: A descriptive type of cross-sectional study was conducted at the department of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics of Dhaka Dental College & Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh during January 2010 to December 2012. The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that there were no differences between adults with class I crowded, class III and class I normal occlusions in respect to width of the maxillary and mandibular arches and gender comparisons. Materials and Methods: In this study, 82 pairs of study models were selected from the patients and students of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Dhaka Dental College and Hospital and were divided into three groups. Twenty seven (27) pairs of dental casts with normal occlusion, 25 pairs with class I crowded and another 30 pairs with class III malocclusions that included almost equal numbers of male and female samples. Results: Among different arch dimensions, maxillary arch widths were found to have significantly smaller in class I crowded and class III malocclusions compared to normal class I occlusion. Conclusion: The hypothesis was partially rejected by the findings of the study. It may be suggested that Orthodontist who is aware of these differences in arch dimension will be beneficial to diagnose and make planning of treatment of orthodontic cases more accurately. This chapter discussed current trends and issues in TVET of Bangladesh and challenges faced by the TVET programme in Bangladesh. The chapter drew attentions to the fact that due to tremendous development in the socio-economic status and technological changes around the world, consumers' expectations towards the products and services have been changing rapidly thereby resulting into a highly competitive globalized market. In order to compete with these demands, government and private organizations should ensure best quality products and services for their customers. Every nation throughout this global village needs to have updated means, particularly in the area of updated knowledge and skills, to survive in this globalized open market. Many developing countries particularly from Asia and Africa are facing growing pressure to compete with the changing global market. Besides, most of the least developing and underdeveloped countries of the world are located in these geographical regions (Asia and Africa) where most of the poor people with low per capita income are living. In order to improve these conditions, they put emphasis on developing their manpower as per the global requirements. Most of the developing countries, therefore, consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the main key agents to play the vital role for educating and training their huge unemployed population to become competitive human recourses to enter into national and global market.

Fifty cases of schizophrenia were assessed in Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, to ascertain the pattern of demographic features and symptom presentation in current national perspective. The study includes period from July 2004 to September 2005. Most of the patients belonged to the age ranging from 14 to 45 years throughout whole Bangladesh. It was found that 54% of the patients were male and 46% were female. The lowest age of onset was 14 year for both sexes and the highest age of onset was 45 year in female and 41 years in male. Among the schizophrenic patients 50% were unmarried and 50% were married and most of them belonged to lower economic class. In this study both the urban and rural percentage were equal (50%). Most of the patients were unemployed or recently disengaged from work place with a lower educational back ground. The most frequent patterns of symptom irrespective of demographic variables were persecutory ideas or delusion (76%). Analysis revealed that delusion of reference, grandiose delusions, delusion of control or possession of thought were significantly high among the male patients compared to female patients (p < 0.05), but no statistically significant difference was observed with other symptoms (p>0.05). Analysis found that no statistically significant difference was observed between urban and rural patients (p > 0.05) except visual and other hallucinations e.g. gustatory, olfactory which was significantly high among the urban patients (p < 0.05). The next frequent symptom was perceptual disturbances in the form of auditory hallucination (70%). Delusion of reference was about 70% along with delusion about control or possession of thoughts being approximately 42%. Class III malocclusions are considered one of the most complex and difficult orthodontic problems to diagnose and treat. Skeletal and /or dental asymmetries in patient presenting with Class III malocclusion can worsen the prognosis recognizing the dentoalveolar and skeletal characteristics of class III malocclusion and their treatment possibilities is essential for a favorable nonsurgical correction. Therefore, this case presents a nonsurgical extraction approach to class III malocclusion treatment which can significantly improve the occlusion and facial deformities. A male patient of 18 yrs attended a private dental office at Dhaka, Bangladesh with the complain of aesthetic problem. On examination, incisor, canine and molar relationships were found Class III on both sides with palatally placed upper central incisors and crowding on both anterior segments. The case was treated orthodontically. It tooks nearly 18 months to complete the treatment. The patient was happy with the new appearance and function. Climate Change induced hazards, including cyclonic events, variations in temperature and rainfall, drought and salinity intrusion in water resources and soil are adversely affecting the agricultural production and food security in Bangladesh. Much more alarmingly, it is expected that Sea Level Rise will further deteriorate the agriculture sector in future. The fall of rice production in the coastal zones already indicates a disturbing situation under the already changing climatic elements. A number of studies have been under taken to explore the impacts, the adaptation measures being taken and that can be taken, vulnerability of the people living in these areas, and the loss and damages imposed upon the agricultural sector in the coastal zones. Both quantitative and qualitative tools were applied to measure agricultural productivity and vulnerability in the study locations. This paper is mainly based on the review of such recent studies on climate change and agriculture related issues in the coastal areas. It shows that cyclonic events (e.g. Cyclone Sidr 2007 and Cyclone Aila 2009) and the associated salinity intrusion have drastically affected the agricultural production (mainly rice and vegetables) in most of the coastal districts. According to a recent study, 86 % households believe that the local rice production (aman) has decreased because of salinity intrusion in soil in the study villages.

At present, chemotherapy is one of the principal methods of treatment of cancer. For many years, chem- otherapy is possibly the only way to control cancers that do not respond to either surgery or radiation. To date a good number of chemotherapeutic drugs have been developed which are effective in the treatment of human cancers. But, A few drugs have been known to be safe and promising. The most widely used chemotherapeutic drugs include meth- otrexate, cyclophosphamide, 5-fluorouracil etc. In this review, the molecular basis of drug interaction of methotrex- ate, cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil has been studied. Understanding of the molecular basis of drug interaction of the chemotherapeutic agents is fundamental in order to enhance the clinical effectiveness of chemotherapy as well as to increase our knowledge of the cytotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic drugs. Increased understanding of the pharmacokinetics and the mechanism of action also help to develop biomodulating strategies. The boundary between the efficacy and toxicity of chemotherapeutic drugs is very narrow. So, novel approaches are needed to be formulated in order to enhance the efficacy and to minimize the toxic effects of the chemotherapeutic agents. Though a lot of in- formation is needed to be learned and a lot of task is needed to be accomplished, chemotherapy can be the ultimate and feasible way for controlling cancers if the toxic effects of chemotherapy can be reduced or minimized.

Wireless access technology has come a long way in its relatively short but remarkable lifetime, which has so far been led by the WiFi technology. While WiFi enjoys a high penetration in the market, its hotspots are connected to the internet through wired connections, making its deployment cost very high. WiMAX has emerged as an existing new wireless technology, which provides larger coverage and higher bandwidth. Deployment of WiMAX only infrastructure, however, is highly expensive, which has motivated researchers to search for a low cost integrated WiMAX/WiFi architecture (using WiMAX as the backhaul and WiFi as the last mile technology) that supports 4G applications and provides high speed broadband services. WiMAX technology is equipped with mechanisms capable of delivering guaranteed quality of service (QoS). WiFi, on the other hand, has very limited capacity for providing QoS to the end applications. Delivering improved QoS in an integrated WiMAX/WiFi architecture poses a serious technological challenge. In this paper, we depict a converged architecture of WiMAX and WiFi, and then propose an adaptive resource distribution model for the access points. The new model is designed as an optimization problem that maximizes the QoS utility of the network. A new QoS utility function is proposed that takes the connection priority and continuity into account. Our simulation results show that our proposed scheme maintains QoS in different scenarios whereas existing other resource sharing schemes experience violation of QoS (minimum rate requirement) in 66% cases.

WiFi enjoys a high penetration in the market.Most of the electronic gadgets such as laptop, notepad, mobile set, etc., boast the provision ofWiFi. Currently most WiFi hotspots are connected to the Internet via wired connections (e.g., Ethernet), and the deployment cost of wired connection is high. On the other hand, since WiMAX can provide a high coverage area and transmission bandwidth, it is very suitable for the backbone networks of WiFi. WiMAX can also provide the better QoS needed for many 4G applications. WiMAX devices, however, are not as common as WiFi devices and it is also expensive to deploy aWiMAX-only infrastructure. An integrated WiMAX/WiFi architecture (using WiMAX as backhaul connection for WiFi) can support 4G applications with QoS assurance and mobility, and provide high-speed broadband services in rural, regional and urban areas while reducing the backhaul cost. WiMAX and WiFi have different MAC mechanisms to handle QoS. WiMAX MAC architecture is connection-oriented providing the platform for strong QoS control. In contrast,WiFi MAC is not connection-oriented, hence can provide only best effort services. Delivering improved QoS in an integrated WiMAX/WiFi architecture poses a serious technological challenge. The paper depicts a converged architecture of WiMAX and WiFi, and then proposes an adaptive resource distribution model for the access points. The resource distribution model ultimately allocates more time slots to those connections that need more instantaneous resources to meet QoS requirements. A dynamic splitting technique is also presented that divides the total transmission period into downlink and uplink transmission by taking the minimum data rate requirements of the connections into account. This ultimately improves the utilization of the available resources, and the QoS of the connections. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes significantly outperform the other existing resource sharing schemes, in terms of maintaining QoS of different traffic classes in an integratedWiMAX/WiFi architecture.

Among different color models HSV, HLS, YIQ, YCbCr, YUV, etc. have been most popular for skin detection. Most of the research done in the field of skin detection has been trained and tested on human images of African, Mongolian and Anglo-Saxon ethnic origins, skin colors of Indian sub-continentals have not been focused separately. Combinatorial algorithms, without affecting asymptotic complexity can be developed using the skin detection concepts of these color models for boosting detection performance. In this paper a comparative study of different combinatorial skin detection algorithms have been made. For training and testing 200 images (skin and non skin) containing pictures of sub-continental male and females have been used to measure the performance of the combinatorial approaches, and considerable development in success rate with True Positive of 99.5% and True Negative of 93.3% have been observed.

Surgical exposure of impacted upper incisor is very complex, so fixed orthodontic treatment rehabilitation is the first choice of the treatment for the correction of malocclusion. A clinical case report a 10-year old boy with a unerupted malposed upper left central incisor, which was treated by sequential surgical exposure and fixed orthodontic treatment.
