Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common form of alopecia in women. Affected women may experience psychological distress and impaired social functioning. Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment are desirable because treatments are more effective to avoid the progression of hair loss than stimulating regrowth. Typically, a diagnosis of FPHL can be confirmed by review of a patient's medical history and a physical examination alone. Testing a scalp biopsy is diagnostic but usually not required. In women with signs of hyperandrogenism, an investigation for ovarian or adrenal disorders should be performed. Treatment for FPHL is obscured by myths. The aim of FPHL treatment could be two-fold: Reverse or stabilize the process of hair follicle miniaturization. Mild-to-moderate FPHL in women can be treated with oral antiandrogen therapies (cyproterone acetate and spironolactone) and/or topical minoxidil with good results in many cases. If used correctly, available medical treatments arrest the progression of the disease and reverse miniaturization in most patients with mild-to-moderate FPHL. After phacoemulsification, subjects received carbomer sodium hyaluronate trehalose (trehalose group) or sodium hyaluronate tears (HG group) substitute and were assessed through objective (break up time, corneal and conjunctival staining) and subjective (OSDI questionnaire) clinical evaluations after a two times a day topical administration. Outcome measures were collected preoperatively (baseline), one week (day 7) and 1 month (day 30) after surgery. AIM: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease, commonly characterized by painful, deep dermal abscesses and chronic draining sinus tracts. Recently, laser and light-based therapies have become more commonly used in the management of HS.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report 20 HS patients treated with a 1064 nm wavelength, emitted from a diode laser, launched in an optical fibre through intracavitary modalities.RESULTS: Each patient underwent four laser sessions, one every two weeks. we recorded a significative reduction (31%) of Sartorius score from 28.55 ± 13.04 to 19.75 ± 12.29 after 4 laser sessions (p < 0.05). No one has had a worsening of the disease.CONCLUSION: Intralesional diode laser 1064 nm can be a good treatment option for patients with moderate and localized hidradenitis suppurativa, because it is minimally invasive, doesn’t have significant complications and provides a rapid post-treatment recovery.

Software systems have been long introduced as support to the early detection of melanoma through the automatic analysis of suspicious skin lesions. Nevertheless, their behavior is not yet similar to the performance exhibited by expert dermatologists in terms of diagnostic accuracy. Instead, a software system should be adopted by non-experienced dermatologists in order to improve the measurement and detection results for skin atypical patterns and the accuracy of the corresponding second opinion. This paper describes an image-based measurement and classification system able to score pigmented skin lesions according to the Seven-Point Check-list diagnostic method. Focus is devoted to the measurement procedure of biological structures more closely related to the atypical character of the nevus. Moreover, the performances of the measurement system are evaluated by considering the support to dermatologists with different experiences during the clinical activity.

This review focuses on recent evidences about human microbiome composition and functions, exploring the potential implication of its impairment in some diffuse and invalidating inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and acne. We analysed current scientific literature, focusing on the current evidences about gut and skin microbiome composition and the complex dialogue between microbes and the host. Finally, we examined the consequences of this dialogue for health and skin diseases. This review highlights how human microbes interact with different anatomic niches modifying the state of immune activation, skin barrier status, microbe-host and microbe-microbe interactions. It also shows as most of the factors affecting gut and skin microorganisms' activity have demonstrated to be effective also in modulating chronic inflammatory skin diseases. More and more evidences demonstrate that human microbiome plays a key role in human health and diseases. It is to be expected that these new insights will translate into diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive measures in the context of personalized/precision medicine.

BACKGROUND Eyelashes have both a protective and an aesthetic function. Hypotrichosis of the eyelashes may negatively influence an individual's self-perception. OBJECTIVE To evaluate efficacy and safety of topical administration of a new cosmetic preparation containing 15 keto fluprostenol isopropyl ester (80 µgr/mL) for the treatment of idiopathic hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. METHODS This is a monocentric, double-blind, vehicle-controlled study. Forty patients (18 years) with idiopathic hypotrichosis (GEA 1 or 2), who also exhibit feelings of low confidence, based on the ESQ score, were divided into two groups. Group 1: twenty women treated with once-daily 15 keto fluprostenol isopropyl ester gel and Group 2: twenty women treated only with the vehicle gel. Patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) have always had a poor prognosis. Recently new targeted drugs were developed. A 73-year-old female patient affected from mRCC was assessed at our Department. She underwent before a multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) therapy, but she developed progressive liver metastases so she was treated after with everolimus, an allosteric inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), but started developing depigmented lesions over the neck. Vitiligo is a common cutaneous disorder and drug-induced vitiligo is reported. Our case can suggest a new type of drug-induced vitiligo, caused by a melanocyte-specific mechanism of toxicity. © 2017, Australasian Medical Journal Pty Ltd. All rights reserved.

We read with great interest the article by Albrecht et al.1 regarding the long-term clinical safety of Clindamycin and Rifampicin combination for the treatment of Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). The authors discuss carefully whether Clindamycin and Rifampicin could be safely continued beyond a 10 week course, analyzing long term toxicity of these drugs.
