Appl. 20, 399–403, 1995], consisting of 75 pairs of spherical samples and 75 pairs of flat samples, with a wide range of color differences covering from small to large magnitude, were printed by an Mcor Iris paper-based 3D color printer. Each pair was assessed twice by a panel of 10 observers using a gray-scale psychophysical method in a spectral tunable LED viewing cabinet with two types of light sources: diffuse lighting with and without an additional overhead spotlight. The experimental results confirmed that the lighting conditions had more effect on the perceived color difference between complex 3D shapes than between 2D objects. The results for 3D and 2D objects were more similar under only diffuse lighting. Current 3D results had good correlations with previous ones [Color Res. Appl. 24, 356-368, 1999; J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 36, 789-799, 2019] using 2D samples with large color differences, meaning that color-difference magnitude had more effect on perceived color differences than sample shape and lighting. Considering ten modern color-difference formulas, the best predictions of the current experimental data were found for CAM02-LCD formula [Color Res. Appl. 31, 320-330, 2006]. For current results, it was also found that predictions of current color-difference formulas were below average inter-observer variability, and remarkable improvements were found by adding power corrections [Opt. 10 pags., 9 figs., 3 tabs., 1 app., The dependence of color differences on the illumination and viewing directions for two widely used gray scales for color change (SDCE and AATCC) was evaluated through measuring the spectral bidirectional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) by a gonio-spectrophotometer of metrological quality. Large incidence and viewing angles must be specially avoided using these gray scales because, in these conditions, color differences vary considerably from those established in ISO 105-A02 and ASTMD2616-12. While the visual appearance of the SDCE and AATCC gray scales for color change is similar, our results indicate that their goniochromatic properties are different. Objective To evaluate color and whiteness changes of natural teeth under nine white LED illuminants recently proposed by CIE. Methods From spectral reflectance factors of 36 caries-free upper central incisors, corresponding colors under illuminant D65 and CIE 1931 standard colorimetric observer were computed for all tested illuminants, using the chromatic adaptation transform CAT16. Color differences (CIELAB and CIEDE2000 units) and whiteness ( W I D and W I O indices) from teeth illuminated by CIE standard illuminants (D65 and A) and white LED illuminants were calculated. The appearance of 630 pairs of teeth under all illuminants was also evaluated. Results Color gamuts from 36 teeth under tested illuminants showed similar volume and shape in CIELAB color space, but their centers of gravity changed in many different directions with respect to colors under D65 or A illuminants: Considering colors under D65/A, color shifts produced by white LED illuminants were in the ranges 2.0–8.6/1.1–7.0 CIELAB units (1.4–8.2/0.6–6.8 CIEDE2000 units). Average W I D and W I O values for the 36 teeth under different illuminants ranged from −5.8 to +19.3 and from −7.7 to +11.1, respectively. Considering 630 pairs of teeth, average color differences (mainly lightness differences) were below 0.5 CIELAB units (0.3 CIEDE2000 units), and average whiteness differences ranged from 8.1 to 10.7 for W I D (23.4–25.1 for W I O ). Significance Using CIE LED illuminants, most changes in color and whiteness for individual teeth were above typical threshold values of perceptibility and acceptability in dentistry. However, considering pairs of teeth, the average color and whiteness differences under all tested illuminants were very similar.

The CIECAM02 color-appearance model enjoys popularity in scientific research and industrial applications since it was recommended by the CIE in 2002. However, it has been found that computational failures can occur in certain cases such as during the image processing of cross-media color reproduction applications. Some proposals have been developed to repair the CIECAM02 model. However, all the proposals developed have the same structure as the original CIECAM02 model and solve the problems concerned at the expense of losing accuracy of predicted visual data compared with the original model. In this article, the structure of the CIECAM02 model is changed and the color and luminance adaptations to the illuminant are completed in the same space rather than in two different spaces, as in the original CIECAM02 model. It has been found that the new model (named CAM16) not only overcomes the previous problems, but also the performance in predicting the visual results is as good as if not better than that of the original CIECAM02 model. Furthermore the new CAM16 model is simpler than the original CIECAM02 model. In addition, if considering only chromatic adaptation, a new transformation, CAT16, is proposed to replace the previous CAT02 transformation. Finally, the new CAM16-UCS uniform color space is proposed to replace the previous CAM02-UCS space. A new complete solution for color-appearance prediction and color-difference evaluation can now be offered.

[EN] Results from different authors showed deviations of radial orientation in the a*-b* plane (tilt) for the major axes of chromaticity-discrimination ellipses centered around the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) red color center [Color Res. Appl. 3, 149 (1978)], which are not considered by most of the current advanced color-difference formulas (e.g., CIEDE2000). We performed a visual experiment using red printed samples in order to test the influence of the separation between samples (gap) on the mentioned tilt. Our results confirm a counterclockwise tilt of fitted a*-b* ellipses with a magnitude of approximately 36 degrees for samples with no separation, which is similar to that detected by other authors, and a reduction of the mentioned tilt owing to the separation of the samples. We detected a tilt of approximately 22 degrees for samples with a black gap of 0.5 mm and a tilt of approximately 25 degrees for samples with a white gap of 3 mm. Notably, the uncertainty of previous values given by the corresponding credibility intervals of 95% posterior probability is approximately +/- 8 degrees of the mean values. Finally, we study the performance of the most widely used color-difference formulas in the graphic arts sector using our current experimental results, and conclude that the performance of the CAM02-SCD and CAM02-UCS color-difference formulas is significantly better than that of the CIEDE2000 formula.

Currently the fixed-point iteration method with initial guess m0=0.5 is officially recommended by the CIE MES2 system [CIE 191:2010] in order to compute the adaptation coefficient m and the mesopic luminance L m e s . However, recently, Gao et al. [Opt. Express25, 18365 (2017)] and Shpak et al. [Lighting Res. Technol.49, 111 (2017)] have numerically found that the fixed-point iteration method could be not convergent for large values of S/P. Shpak et al. suspected that, to achieve convergence, the S/P ratio cannot be greater than 17. In this paper, a theoretical consideration for the CIE MES2 system is given. Namely, it is shown that the ratio S/P be smaller than a constant C2 (≈18.1834) is a sufficient condition for the convergence of the fixed-point iteration method. In addition, a new initial guess strategy, achieving faster convergence, is proposed.

We investigated observer metamerism under a variety of viewing conditions, in a set of color-matching experiments using displays and printed color samples under specific light sources. A selection was made of light sources with different illuminances, spectral power distributions, and correlated color temperatures, as well as displays with different sets of primaries. A panel of 157 observers with normal color vision and ages between 20 and 59 years old performed 5465 visual color matches around 9 different color centers. The results from the simulated and real experiments were quite different. Specifically, the mean color difference from the mean changed with experimental viewing conditions, ranging from 0.73 to 1.64 CIELAB units (average 0.99 CIELAB units) in simulated experiments, and from 3.12 to 4.03 CIELAB units (average 3.55 CIELAB units) in real experiments. In real experiments, observers’ variability reduced for light sources with high illuminance and high correlated color temperature. This article addresses some general practices for the computation of CIE tristimulus values (TSVs), including different methods used for the interpolation, extrapolation, and truncation of data in the visible wavelength range. In each case, a quantitative analysis is presented on the basis of a dataset with 2365 spectral reflectances covering a wide color gamut, assuming six CIE illuminants and the two CIE standard colorimetric observers. For interpolation, it is found that among five tested methods, the (cubic) spline method is the best one when the spectral reflectance factors are uniformly sampled over the visible wavelength range. For extrapolation, it is found that the second-order extrapolation method gives better results than the use of nearest available data points or linear extrapolation methods. With respect to truncation, considering five different usual truncated ranges, it is found that the range from 360 to 780 nm provides more accurate results than the range from 380 to 780 nm currently recommended by CIE for nonfluorescent samples, and the use of the truncated range from 400 to 700 nm in place of the CIE-recommended range of 360 to 830 nm leads to TSVs with considerably high color differences of up to 0.9 CIELAB units. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of non-invasive spectral measurements to control the conservation status is a part of the preventive conservation of artworks which nowadays is becoming increasingly interesting. This paper describes how to use a spectral measuring device and an illumination system specifically designed for such a task in a very large dimension artwork painting (7.8 m wide × 3.5 m high). The system, controlled by a Cartesian robot, allows spectral measurements in a spectral range of 400–780 nm. The measured data array has a total of 2201 circular regions with 5.5 mm spot diameter placed on a square grid. Colorimetric calculations performed from these spectral measurements may be used to characterize color shifts related to reflectance changes in specific areas of the paint. A color shifting from the expected gray has been shown.

We performed objective spectroradiometric measurements on an LCD image of the recently famous Tumblr dress which is typically perceived by people as blue/black or white/gold. The average ± standard deviation of the CIELAB coordinates was as follows: For a set of 33 points in the areas considered as blue/white, L* = 46 ± 6, C*ab = 33 ± 6, and hab = 282 ± 3°, and for a set of 36 points in the areas considered as black/gold, L* = 29 ± 6; C*ab = 10 ± 4; hab = 16 ± 34°. Initially, this first set of values has low variability and corresponds to a blue color, whereas the second set of values has a very large hue-angle range, including points which can be considered as both gold and black colors. We also performed spectrophotometric measurements on an original model of this dress, and, assuming D65 illuminant and CIE 1931 colorimetric standard observer, the average results were L* = 26, C*ab = 39, and hab = 289°, and L* = 10, C*ab = 1, and hab = 290° for the blue/white and black/gold points, respectively. We discuss the influence of different factors on the blue/black and white/gold perceptions of different people, including observers' variability in color-matching functions, Bezold–Brucke and Abney effects, background influence, and illumination assumptions. Although more research on the effect shown in this dress is needed, we think that from this example we can learn that objects do not have specific colors; that is, color is a human perception, and many times the answer of the human visual system is not simple and relies on assumptions of unknown, and variable, origin. © 2015 The Authors Color Research & Application Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc., 40, 525–529, 2015

New values of parameters a and b are proposed for the CIE system of mesopic photometry MES2 [CIE Publication 191:2010], because from the original values this model may have no solution or multi-solutions. From the new values of parameters a and b it is shown that the CIE MES2 system has a unique solution. The difference however, between the original and the new values of parameters a and b is very small and the changes do not affect previous conclusions based on the MES2 model. To compute such a solution, we propose a Bisection-Newton method which exhibits fast convergence (8 iterations in the worst case), and improves the fixed-point method recommended by the CIE MES2 system, which has convergence problems for high values of the photopic luminance and very high values of the scotopic/photopic ratio. Comparative results for the fixed-point method, the Bisection method, the Newton method, and the Bisection-Newton method, in terms of the number of iterations necessary for convergence and the computation time used, are reported.

Most viable modern chromatic adaptation transforms (CATs), such as CAT16 and CAT02, can trace their roots both conceptually and mathematically to a simple model formulated from the hypotheses of Johannes von Kries in 1902, known as the von Kries transform/model. However, while the von Kries transform satisfies the properties of symmetry and transitivity, most modern CATs do not satisfy these two important properties. In this Letter, we propose a generalized von Kries transform, which satisfies the symmetry and transitivity properties in addition to improving the fit to most available experimental visual datasets on corresponding colors.

Brill [Color Res Appl 2006;31:142-145] and Brill and Susstrunk [Color Res Appl 2008;33:424-426] found that CIECAM02 has the yellow–blue and purple problems and gave partial solutions to them. In this article we model the optimum solution to the yellow–blue and purple problems simultaneously as a constrained non-linear optimization problem. An optimum solution resulting in a new CAT02 matrix is numerically obtained. This new matrix satisfies the nesting rule and performs better than the Hunt-Pointer-Estevez (HPE) matrix in predicting both corresponding colours and colour appearance data sets. Specifically, it was found that the new and HPE matrices performed significantly different on nine (out of 21) corresponding colour data sets and on all corresponding colours data sets as a whole. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Soil colour has been determined in most cases by using Munsell soil-colour charts, sometimes with spectrometers, and occasionally with digital cameras. The objective here is to assess whether a mobile phone, which has all the requirements to capture and process digital images, might also be able to provide an objective evaluation of soil colour under controlled illumination. For this, we have developed an Android application that takes a picture of a soil sample, allowing the user to select the region of interest and then, after a RGB image-processing and a polynomial process transform between colour spaces, the Munsell (HVC) and CIE (XYZ) coordinates appear on the screen of mobile phone. In this way, a commercial HTC smartphone estimated the colour of 60 crumbled soil samples between 2.9YR and 2.3Y with a mean error of 3.75+/-1.81 CIELAB units, taking as a reference the colour measurements performed with a spectroradiometer. The Munsell hue had the worst estimates (mean error of 2.72+/-1.61 Munsell units) because of its geometric mismatch with the RGB colour space and for being defined to illuminant C, different of the D65 source under which the phone camera took the pictures. Because the measuring errors were lower than those described in the literature for the visual determination of soil colour, and the application also worked successfully in a different smartphone than the one used in its development, we think that current experimental results encourage the expectations of using smartphones in the field as soil-colour sensors.

For the correlated color temperature (CCT) of a light source to be estimated, a nonlinear optimization problem must be solved. In all previous methods available to compute CCT, the objective function has only been approximated, and their predictions have achieved limited accuracy. For example, different unacceptable CCT values have been predicted for light sources located on the same isotemperature line. In this paper, we propose to compute CCT using the Newton method, which requires the first and second derivatives of the objective function. Following the current recommendation by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) for the computation of tristimulus values (summations at 1 nm steps from 360 nm to 830 nm), the objective function and its first and second derivatives are explicitly given and used in our computations. Comprehensive tests demonstrate that the proposed method, together with an initial estimation of CCT using Robertson’s method [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 58, 1528-1535 (1968)], gives highly accurate predictions below 0.0012 K for light sources with CCTs ranging from 500 K to 106 K.

The Modified Uniform Oil Colour Scale (MUOCS) is proposed for the colour specification of virgin olive oils. MUOCS has 60 standard colours, the same number as the two previous scales available for the same purpose: Uniform Oil Colour Scale (UOCS) and Bromthymol Blue (BTB). A remarkable improvement in accuracy can be achieved from MUOCS standards: For a broad dataset of 1700 virgin olive oils produced in Spain during four different harvests, the average colour differences to the closest standards were 2.86, 3.99, and 8.17 CIELAB units using MUOCS, UOCS and BTB, respectively. Liu et al. [Color Res Appl 1995;20:245–250] compared the CIELAB hue angles under CIE illuminants D65 and A for quantifying the color appearance changes for gem materials. They found that CIELAB hue angle for some gem materials under illuminant D65 was larger than under A, which is contrary to the perceived blue and purple appearances under daylight and incandescent light sources, respectively. They called this phenomenon as the abnormal hue angle change in the CIELAB space for the gem materials. In this article, we note the proper way to quantify the appearance changes is to use chromatic adaptation transforms (CATs), since we are only concerning the color change of the illumination. At the same time, it is found that the chromatic adaptations in the sharper sensor space and in the cone fundamental space provide different results, the ones related to the latter being in better agreement with current blue-to-purple color appearance change. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Relating instrumental measurements to visually perceived colour-differences, under specific illuminating and viewing conditions, is one of the challenges of advanced colorimetry. Experimental data are used to devise new colour-difference formulas as well as to assess the performance of other colour-difference formulas. In this paper, we analyse the consistency of experimental data employed at the development of the last CIE recommended colour-difference formula, CIEDE2000. Because of the subjective and imprecise nature of these data, we adopt a fuzzy approach, so that finally, for each experimental datum, we establish the fuzzy degree to which it can be considered consistent with the remaining data. The results of our analyses show that only a few data are associated with a rather low degree of consistency. These data in many cases correspond to colour pairs with a very small colour-difference for which visual assessments seem to be overestimated.

Color changes of virgin-olive-oil samples contained in cells with different thicknesses were analyzed. Ten different commercial virgin olive oils were measured at different sample thicknesses by two methods: conventional spectrophotometry (5.0, 10.0, and 50.0 mm path length cells), and spectroradiometry (cylindrical cells with 8.0, 11.2, 15.6, 19.6, 23.2, 27.2, 36.8 and 46.4 mm internal diameters) with samples placed on the floor of a commercial cabinet using a standard daylight source. The illumination in these two methods was different, resulting in notable color differences in the samples. Color variations of virgin olive oils depending on thickness do not follow the same trend for all samples. Neither the Bouguer-Lambert-Beer law nor the Kubelka-Munk theory provided successful color predictions in the whole range of thicknesses considered here. We can conclude that for precise and reproducible color measurements of virgin-olive-oil color, it is necessary to fix both the thickness of the sample and the illumination geometry. To achieve an easier communication between industries and/or consumers, we propose that virgin-olive-oil color be measured using a spectrophotometer with 5.0-mm path length cells, for three reasons: conventional olive-oil laboratories have spectrophotometers more often than spectroradiometers; with virgin olive oils the cleaning of 5.0 mm cells is easier than for 1.0 mm cells and it does not consume a large amount of oil; spectrophotometric signals for 5.0-mm path length cells allow reliable measurements of even the darkest virgin-olive-oil samples.

We propose a fuzzy method to analyze datasets of perceptual color differences with two main objectives: to detect inconsistencies between couples of color pairs and to assign a degree of consistency to each color pair in a dataset. This method can be thought as the outcome of a previous one developed for a similar purpose [J. Mod. Opt. 56, 1447 (2009)], whose performance is compared with the proposed one. In this work, we present the results achieved using the dataset employed to develop the current CIE/ISO color-difference formula, CIEDE2000, but the method could be applied to any dataset. Specifically, in the mentioned dataset, we find that some couples of color pairs have contradictory information, which can interfere in the successful development of future color-difference formulas as well as in checking the performance of current ones. Color-difference formulas modified by power functions provide results in better agreement with visually perceived color differences. Each of the modified color-difference formulas proposed here adds only one relevant parameter to the corresponding original color-difference formula. Results from 16 visual data sets and 11 color-difference formulas indicate that the modified formulas achieve an average decrease of 5.7 STRESS (Standardized Residual Sum of Squares) units with respect to the original formulas, signifying an improvement of 17.3%. In particular, for these 16 visual data sets, the average decrease for the current CIE/ISO recommended color-difference formula CIEDE2000 modified by an exponent 0.70 was 5.4 STRESS units (17.5%). The improvements of all modified color-difference formulas with respect to the original ones held for each of the 16 visual data sets and were statistically significant in most cases, particularly for all data sets with color differences close to the threshold. Results for 2 additional data sets with color pairs in the blue and black regions of the color space confirmed the usefulness of the proposed power functions. The main reason of the improvements found for the modified color-difference formulas with respect to the original color-difference formulas seems to be the compression provided by power functions.

This paper reports the research and structuring of a classification system for the effects of psychophysical variables on the color attributes. A basic role of color science is to psychophysically specify color appearance. An early stage is to specify the effects of the psychophysical variables (as singles, pairs, etc) on the color attributes (as singles, pairs, etc), for example to model color appearance. Current data on effects are often scarce or conflicting. Few effects are well understood, and the practice of naming effects after their discoverer(s) is inadequate and can be confusing. The number and types of possible effects have never been systematically analyzed and categorized. We propose a simple and rigorous system of classification including nomenclature. The total range of effects is computed from the possible combinations of three psychophysical variables (luminance, dominant wavelength, purity) and six color attributes (lightness, brightness, hue, chroma, colorfulness, saturation) in all modes of appearance. Omitting those effects that are normally impossible to perceive at any one time (such as four- or five-dimensional colors), the total number perceivable is 161 types of effects for all modes of appearance. The type of effect is named after the psychophysical stimulus (or stimuli) and the relevant color attribute(s), e.g., Luminance-on-hue effect (traditionally known as Bezold-Brucke effect). Each type of effect may include slightly different effects with infinite variations depending on experimental parameters., M. Purpose. The color change reached in two commercial disinfecting solutions for soft contact lenses using new color indicators has been analyzed, and its relationship with the temporal evolution of the hydrogen peroxide concentration, responsible for the disinfection process, has been examined. The results are compared with another commercial solution using a different color indicator. Methods. Color measurements of the disinfecting solutions were performed at 2-minute intervals for over 2 hours using a Photo-Research PR-704 spectroradiometer with horizontal optical axis. Samples were placed at the floor of a VeriVide CAC 120 light booth with a Munsell gray mask behind them. Two different standard light sources, representative of outdoor and indoor illumination, were used. The hydrogen peroxide concentration during the disinfection process was measured for each commercial solution using a Beckman DU-7 spectrophotometer. Results. The temporal evolutions of color for the two new disinfecting solutions were qualitatively different. CIELAB color differences induced in these two new disinfecting solutions were 1.5 and 2.2 times greater than that measured in the earlier comparative solution and occur in a more appropriate direction of color space for users with defective color vision. Although the earlier solution generated color changes close to the deutan confusion line, the changes produced by the new solutions are close to the tritan confusion line. After 2 hours, the hydrogen peroxide concentration for the two new solutions was approximately one-third the one reached by the earlier solution. There are statistically significant correlations (p 0.01) between color change and hydrogen peroxide concentration for the two new solutions (r 0.878 and r 0.990). Conclusions. Color changes in these hydrogen peroxide systems can be used as a safe and useful tool by contact lens wearers. The two new disinfecting solutions analyzed in this article show noteworthy improvements over the earlier solution. (Optom Vis Sci 2006;83:160–165)

Four data sets are analyzed to quantify three effects of luminance of samples on chromaticity discrimination: on ellipse area, axis dimensions (a and b), and a/b ratio. Ellipses for aperture, surface, and simulated surface colors in CIE 1931 and 1964 x, y, Y color spaces are shown to reduce axis dimensions with higher luminance by different functions for the major and minor axes. Reduction is greater for major than minor axes, thus improving ellipse circularity. The functions plot straight lines in log-log scale as power law equations, except luminances below 3 cd/m2. We give formulae to predict a and b axes, a/b ratio, and ellipse area for almost any luminance in x, y, Y spaces. Effect of luminance is remarkable on ellipse area, which on average halves with every 3.5 times higher luminance. To illustrate the substantial effects of luminance, RIT-DuPont ellipses are predicted for three levels of equal luminance at 42, 212, and 2120 cd/m2. In the latter, ellipses are much smaller and are nearer circular than in the former. Higher luminance is known to improve color discrimination, so reduced ellipse area is to be expected but does not occur in CIELAB and DIN99 spaces because of lack of luminance-level dependency. We discuss our results' implications on uniform color space. Weber fraction ΔY/Y indicates brightness discrimination decreases with increasing luminance and is thus independent of chromaticity discrimination. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Spectroradiometric color measurements were performed at 26 regularly spaced points of a standard wine sampler into which 100 cc of wine were poured. Our goal is to describe the color changes occurring in this system, but not to propose a new method for wine-color measurement. Three samples of three different wines (red, rose and white) were studied. From experimental measurements, lines of constant lightness (L), chroma (C,10) and hue-angle (hab,10) were plotted for each wine poured into the wine sampler, as well as lines of constant CIELAB color differences (ΔE,10), with respect to a reference point placed at the axis of the wine sampler and at the zone with the greatest diameter. Considering different points of the wine sampler, the color attribute undergoing the greatest change was lightness (ΔL about 16.0, 15.0 and 11.0 for the red, rose and white wines, respectively), followed by chroma (ΔC,10 about 2.8, 3.8 and 2.6 for the red, rose and white wines, respectively) and hue(ΔH,10 lower than 1.0 for all the wines). Lightness variations were related mainly to the thickness differences between various zones of the wine sampler. Large color differences were found among the different points of the wine poured into the wine sampler (about 20.0, 21.0 and 14.0 CIELAB units, for the red, rose and white wines, respectively). Panels should be aware of these large color variations when wine is visually assessed using standard wine samplers. It should be concluded that a single color specification for a wine poured into a wine sampler gives incomplete information, but hue, which is the main color attribute considered by observers, is nearly constant in the wine sampler. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. There is reasonable agreement between the orientation of the major axes of the a*b* tolerance ellipses in the blue region and the slope of the tritanopic confusion lines passing through their centers. This agreement includes some experimental facts such as the approximate constant orientation of the ellipses when the luminance of the center changes and the clockwise rotation of the major axis of the ellipses when the luminous source D65 is replaced by A. However, the tilts predicted by the tritanopic lines do not follow the pattern proposed by the CIEDE2000 color-difference formula; in particular, for the blue-green centers with hue angles lower than 255°, the high tilts predicted by the tritanopic lines are quite different. From 132 ellipses previously reported, we found that the orientations of the 17 ellipses in the blue region (255° < h < 320°) were similarly predicted by both CIEDE2000 and the tritanopic confusion lines (average error of 12.2° in absolute value). © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Twenty experienced observers with nondefective color vision judged 27 virgin olive oil samples within an acceptable color range, using the bromthymol blue (BTB) method, under controlled observation conditions (daylight source with a correlated color temperature of 6500 K, and standard gray back-ground). On the average, 44.8% of the observers agreed in their selections of the BTB standard solution matching a given oil sample, and this percentage increased to 88.2% considering ±one step in the two dimensions (pH and concentration) of the BTB scale. On the average, the lowest color difference between oil samples and available BTB solutions was 6.6 Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage 1976-(L*a*b*) (CIELAB) units, but this color difference was approximately two times greater for the color difference between oil samples and BTB solutions selected by our observers. The colors of the BTB standard solutions in the CIELAB space are not uniformly distributed, and thus one step in pH or concentration is equivalent to CIELAB color differences varying in a wide range (1.7–13.5 and 1.7–26.3 CIELAB units, respectively). From these values, indicating low precision, accuracy, and uniformity, some suggestions are made for future improvements of the current BTB method.

We propose a new approach to the quantitative determination of the iris colour through the spectroradiometric measurement of a set of 72 artificial irises under controlled illumination and geometry. The spread of these samples in the CIELAB colour space indicates no clearly distinguished groups within the set analysed. Colour measurements for different points of these irises and for the overall irises (pupil and specular image of the light source included) are well correlated. Complementary colour measurements were also performed for the irises of 25 ocular prostheses and 40 real observers. All these colour measurements appear to be quite consistent, the average standard deviation of any of the three a *, b *, L * co-ordinates being lower than 1.0 units. In a visual experiment where 11 normal observers matched the 25 ocular prostheses using the 72 artificial irises, the results indicate that a simple criterion based on the lowest colour-difference agreed with the observers’ judgements in only 18% of the cases. This result suggests that, although colour appears to be a major parameter in the overall characterization of the human iris, additional factors such as patterns or textures should also be considered.

From a set of gonioapparent automotive samples from different manufacturers we selected 28 low-chroma color pairs with relatively small color differences predominantly in lightness. These color pairs were visually assessed with a gray scale at six different viewing angles by a panel of 10 observers. Using the Standardized Residual Sum of Squares (STRESS) index, the results of our visual experiment were tested against predictions made by 12 modern color-difference formulas. From a weighted STRESS index accounting for the uncertainty in visual assessments, the best prediction of our whole experiment was achieved using AUDI2000, CAM02-SCD, CAM02-UCS and OSA-GP-Euclidean color-difference formulas, which were no statistically significant different among them. A two-step optimization of the original AUDI2000 color-difference formula resulted in a modified AUDI2000 formula which performed both, significantly better than the original formula and below the experimental inter-observer variability. Nevertheless the proposal of a new revised AUDI2000 color-difference formula requires additional experimental data. The RIT-DuPont visual color-difference data [Color Res. Appl. 16, 297–316 (1991)] have been used to estimate contours of equal color-differences (ellipsoids) at 19 color centers, in CIELAB and x, y, Y/100 color spaces. The ellipsoid fits are better in the CIELAB space than in x, y, Y/100, since the design of the RIT-DuPont experiment emphasized directional balance in CIELAB. The ellipsoids estimated are hardly tilted with respect to L* or Y/100, and they appear to be in overall good agreement with those reported for object colors in recent publications. From the characteristics and accuracy of the RIT-DuPont experiment, the current ellipsoids can be considered highly reliable and representative of color discrimination under the observational conditions employed, these closely following the “reference conditions” recently suggested by the CIE for industrial color-difference evaluation [Color Res. Starting from the colour-matching functions measured by Stiles - Burch for a 2? visual field and ten individual observers, published by Trezona we have discussed certain differences between this dataset and the CIE 1931 Standard Observer. Moreover, a Standard Deviate Observer (SDO) has been developed from this dataset, loosely following the method proposed by Nayatani et al. It should be borne in mind that all the SDO previously proposed were derived from colour-matching functions measured with greater sizes of the visual field. In the present work, we study the influence of colour-matching functions on the determination of colour-threshold differences (part I) and of greater size (part II). For this, we have used the colour-matching functions of 16 different observers, the five CIE centres and 200 Munsell samples. A previously operated and fully automated Wright colorimeter was used for the determination of colour-matching functions and colour-discrimination thresholds. The results for part I indicate that the discrimination ellipses obtained with different colour-matching functions (with some exceptions) had highly similar orientations, semiaxis relationships and areas, whereas the centres appeared to shift with respect to each other, primarily in the blue area. The results for part II reveal important discrepancies between the different observers in evaluating any colour, and close agreement in evaluating colour differences. On the basis of the overall study, we deduce that the colour-matching functions of the observers have significant influence on the specification of individual colours, but only slight effects on the determination of small or large colour differences. Colour-difference formulas are tools employed in colour industries for objective pass/fail decisions of manufactured products. These objective decisions are based on instrumental colour measurements which must reliably predict the subjective colour-difference evaluations performed by observers’ panels. In a previous paper we have tested the performance of different colour-difference formulas using the datasets employed at the development of the last CIErecommended colour-difference formula CIEDE2000, and we found that the AUDI2000 colour-difference formula for solid (homogeneous) colours performed reasonably well, despite the colour pairs in these datasets were not similar to those typically employed in the automotive industry (CIE Publication x038:2013, 465-469). Here we have tested again AUDI2000 together with 11 advanced colour-difference formulas (CIELUV, CIELAB, CMC, BFD, CIE94, CIEDE2000, CAM02-UCS, CAM02-SCD, DIN99d, DIN99b, OSA-GP-Euclidean) for three visual datasets we may consider particularly useful to the automotive industry because of different reasons: 1) 828 metallic colour pairs used to develop the highly reliable RIT-DuPont dataset (Color Res. Appl. 35, 274-283, 2010); 2) printed samples conforming 893 colour pairs with threshold colour differences (J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 29, 883-891, 2012); 3) 150 colour pairs in a tolerance dataset proposed by AUDI. To measure the relative merits of the different tested colour-difference formulas, we employed the STRESS index (J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 24, 1823-1829, 2007), assuming a 95% confidence level. For datasets 1) and 2), AUDI2000 was in the group of the best colour-difference formulas with no significant differences with respect to CIE94, CIEDE2000, CAM02-UCS, DIN99b and DIN99d formulas. For dataset 3) AUDI2000 provided the best results, being statistically significantly better than all other tested colour-difference formulas.

The CIELAB lightness and chroma values of pixels in five of the eight ISO SCID natural images were modified to produce sample images. Pairs of images were displayed on a calibrated monitor and assessed by a panel of 12 observers with normal color vision using a categorical judgment method. The experimental results showed that assuming the lightness parametric factor k(L)=1 to predict color differences in images, CIELAB performed better than CIEDE2000, CIE94, or CMC, which is a different result to the one found in color-difference literature for homogeneous color pairs. However, observers perceived CIELAB lightness and chroma differences in images in different ways. To fit current experimental data, a specific methodology is proposed to optimize k(L) in the color-difference formulas CIELAB, CIEDE2000, CIE94, and CMC. From the standardized residual sum of squares (STRESS) index, it was found that the optimized formulas, CIEDE2000(2.3:1), CIE94(3.0:1), and CMC(3.4:1), performed significantly better than their corresponding original forms with lightness parametric factor k(L)=1. Specifically, CIEDE2000(2.3:1) performed the best, with a satisfactory average STRESS value of 25.8, which is very similar to the 27.5 value that was found from the CIEDE2000(1:1) formula for the combined weighted dataset of homogeneous color samples employed at the development of this formula [J. Opt. Soc. Am. A25, 1828 (2008), Table 2]. However, fitting our experimental data, none of the four optimized formulas CIELAB(1.5:1), CIEDE2000(2.3:1), CIE94(3.0:1), and CMC(3.4:1) is significantly better than the others. Current results roughly agree with the recent CIE recommendation that color difference in images can be predicted by simply adopting a lightness parametric factor k(L)=2 in CIELAB or CIEDE2000 [CIE Publication 199:2011]. It was also found that the different contents of the five images have considerable influence on the performance of the tested color-difference formulas.

International audience; A set of 10 color pairs was proposed and produced in 2002 to show the advantages of the CIEDE2000 color-difference formula with respect to CIELAB. These 10 color pairs illustrated each of the five corrections to CIELAB proposed by CIEDE2000. The 10 color pairs were visually assessed, under reference conditions close to those proposed by CIEDE2000, by two groups of 31 and 21 inexperienced observers, using two different gray scales. Average visual results in these experiments fitted CIEDE2000 predictions much better than CIELAB, as shown by a decrease of Standardized Residual Sum of Squares values of about 20 units. Current visual results showed only the improvement of CIEDE2000 upon CIELAB in predictions of perceived color differences, but they are not recommended for testing new advanced color-difference formulas.

A check of the weighting functions proposed by the CIE Technical Committee 1-29 (TC1-29) [Color Res. Appl. 18, 137–139 (1993)] has been carried out using pairs of samples with only a threshold difference in chroma, hue, or lightness. Experimental results with object and aperture colors were used and some parametric factors can be appointed: the dependence of ΔC* on C* appears to be about two times stronger for related color versus the aperture color mode; and the ΔH* dependence on C*, weak but significant for related colors, becomes insignificant for aperture colors. the hue-angle dependences of ΔH* after correction for C* and the dependences of ΔL* on L* or C* are found not significant for aperture colors. After normalization of the five different datasets employed, the results achieved are in overall good agreement and support the proposal of the CIE TC1-29.

The performances of uniform color spaces and color-difference formulae for predicting threshold color differences were investigated based on visual assessments of 893 pairs of printed color patches under a D65 source. The average ΔE(ab,10)* of the pairs was 1.1 units. A threshold psychophysical experiment was repeated three times by a panel of 16 observers with normal color vision. The experimental data were used to evaluate nine color-difference formulae and uniform color spaces using the standardized residual sum of squares (STRESS) measure. The results indicated that all formulae and spaces performed very similarly to each other, and outperformed CIELAB for threshold color differences. The chromaticity-discrimination ellipses were used to compare with previous results from small color differences [Color Res. Appl. (2011), doi:10.1002/col.20689], and they agreed with each other, except for the purple color center.

Threshold-discrimination ellipses were obtained by three normal observers, at five color centers, by the use of two experimental devices, which provided light-surface colors, and the same method and experimental conditions. The ellipses obtained for each center in both devices were quite similar when the sample distributions were appropriate and slightly smaller for object color than for aperture color. The ellipses predicted by three recent color-difference formulas based on the CIE uniform color space (CIELAB) were compared with those experimentally obtained by us as well as by other researchers who analyzed a greater number of color centers. The color-difference formula proposed by the CIE Technical Committee 1-29 [Color Res. Appl. 18, 137 (1993)] provides the best prediction of the semiaxis relationship for all the experimental datasets used, confirming their good performance in previous works [Appl. Opt. 33, 8069 (1993)], although the differences with respect to the experimental results are higher than those attributable to the interobserver variability.

We present a multispectral system developed and optimized for measurement of the spectral reflectance and the color of the human iris. We tested several sets of filters as acquisition channels, analyzed different reconstruction algorithms, and used different samples as training sets. The results obtained show that a conventional three-channel color camera (RGB) was enough to reconstruct the analyzed reflectances with high accuracy, obtaining averaged color differences of around 2-3 CIEDE2000 units and root mean square errors of around 0.01. The device developed was used to characterize 100 real irises corresponding to 50 subjects, 68 prostheses used in clinical practice, and 17 cosmetic colored contact lenses.

New results of chromatic discrimination have been obtained for light transmitted by coloured filters and with a method which guarantees their reproducibility. These results are compared with others obtained for surface-colour presentation through the predictions of several colour-difference formulae: those recommended by CIE (CIELUV and CIELAB), the LABNHU formula, and the cdf-G, cdf-G* formulae, recently proposed by the authors' laboratory.

This paper illustrates how to design a visual experiment to measure color differences in gonioapparent materials and how to assess the merits of different advanced color-difference formulas trying to predict the results of such experiment. Successful color-difference formulas are necessary for industrial quality control and artificial color-vision applications. A color- difference formula must be accurate under a wide variety of experimental conditions including the use of challenging materials like, for example, gonioapparent samples. Improving the experimental design in a previous paper [Melgosaet al., Optics Express 22, 3458-3467 (2014)], we have tested 11 advanced color-difference formulas from visual assessments performed by a panel of 11 observers with normal colorvision using a set of 56 nearly achromatic colorpairs of automotive gonioapparent samples. Best predictions of our experimental results were found for the AUDI2000 color-difference formula, followed by color-difference formulas based on the color appearance model CIECAM02. Parameters in the original weighting function for lightness in the AUDI2000 formula were optimized obtaining small improvements. However, a power function from results provided by the AUDI2000 formula considerably improved results, producing values close to the inter-observer variability in our visual experiment. An investigation of the color metrics and the complexity of the CIEDE2000 formula shows that CIELAB space is inadequate to represent small-medium color differences. The OSA-UCS (Uniform Color Space) Committee has shown that no space with uniform scale for large color differences exists. Therefore the practical way for color-difference specification is a color-difference formula in a nonuniform space. First, the BFD (Bradford University) ellipses are considered in the OSA-UCS space, and their very high regularity suggests a new and very simple color-difference formula at constant luminance. Then the COM (combined) data set used for the development of the CIEDE2000 formula is considered in the OSA-UCS space, and the color-difference formula is extended to sample pairs with a different luminance factor. The value of the performance factor PF/3 for the proposed OSA-UCS-based formula shows that the formula performs like the more complex CIEDE2000 formula for small-medium color differences.

CIELAB-based color-difference formulas are used to improve the prediction of visually perceived color differences through the introduction of various corrections to CIELAB. In our study we analyze the relative importance of these corrections. From the combined dataset employed for the development of CIEDE2000, we found that the improvement of CIE94 over CIELAB was considerably greater than that of CIEDE2000 over CIE94. Chroma-difference correction was the most important correction in both CIE94 and CIEDE2000. With an arbitrary value of 100 assigned to this correction, the score of the hue-difference correction in CIE94 was 21, and the scores of the four remaining corrections in CIEDE2000 were as follows: hue difference, 29; rotation term, 8; lightness difference, 8; and gray correction, 6. At 95% confidence level each of the corrections introduced in CIEDE2000 or CIE94 was statistically significant for the whole combined dataset, in agreement with the results reported by CIE TC 1-47 and 1-29. For the combined dataset, the differences between CMC and CIEDE2000 were found to be statistically significant at 95% confidence level, but the differences between CMC and CIE94 were not. From subsets of the combined dataset it was concluded that further analyses of the lightness-difference and gray corrections proposed by CIEDE2000 would be desirable, using new experimental data.

Spectral transmittances of three new photochromatic lenses have been measured at different activation states produced by the four luminous sources of a VeriVide CAC 120 cabinet. The greatest transmittance changes were found for the UV and D65 sources. These transmittances changes lead to average CIELAB color differences lower than 6 CIELAB units for the 24 chips of a GretagMacbeth color chart.

We have performed spectroradiometric color measurements at different positions on the floor of two lights booths under two light sources. Uniformity provided by these light booths is enough acceptable for most practical color applications involving relative measurements (e.g. CIELAB coordinates), but not for absolute measurements (e.g. tristimulus values or illuminance). Averge color inconstancy indices are lower than 0.6 CIE94 (1.0 CIELAB) color-difference units.

After each laboratory session, students must answer individually three random multiple choice questions. The corresponding software has been developed by us. This self-evaluation test motivates students before and during sessions performance, and provides objective information to the teacher. The estimated students’ mean satisfaction with this system is 8.1/10.
