Abstract

Treatment of local diseases such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and colonic cancer by targeting drug to the colon is a viable approach. Due to gastric degradation of drugs, proteins and peptides, only minimum amount of drug gets absorbed when administered orally and shows little therapeutic activity. Hence the strategy of delivering drugs to colon known as colon targeted drug delivery evolved. Pectin a naturally occurring biodegradable polysaccharide has gained importance as a carrier for colon-specific delivery attributed to swelling nature as well as the ability to resist gastric degradation. This review describes the chemistry of pectin, mechanism of action and various novel modified pectin formulations aimed at targeting the colon.

Abstract

Hypodermic delivery of amikacin is a widely adopted treatment modality for severe infections, including bacterial septicemia, meningitis, intra-abdominal infections, burns, postoperative complications, and urinary tract infections in both paediatric and adult populations. In most instances, the course of treatment requires repeated bolus doses of amikacin, prolonged hospitalization, and the presence of a skilled healthcare worker for administration and continuous therapeutic monitoring to manage the severe adverse effects. Amikacin is hydrophilic and exhibits a short half-life, which further challenges the delivery of sufficient systemic concentrations when administered by the oral or transdermal route. In this purview, the exploitation of novel controlled and sustained release drug delivery platforms is warranted. Furthermore, it has been shown that novel delivery systems are capable of increasing the antibacterial activity of amikacin at lower doses when compared to the conventional formulations and also aid in overcoming the development of drug-resistance, which currently is a significant threat to the healthcare system worldwide. The current review presents a comprehensive overview of the developmental history of amikacin, the mechanism of action in virulent strains as well as the occurrence of resistance, and various emerging drug delivery solutions developed both by the academia and the industry. The examples outlined within the review provides significant pieces of evidence on novel amikacin formulations in the field of antimicrobial research paving the path for future therapeutic interventions that will result in improved clinical outcome.

Abstract

In recent years, there have been significant advancements in the nanotechnology for cancer therapy. Even though molybdenum disulphide (MoS2)-based nanocomposites demonstrated extensive applications in biosensing, bioimaging, phototherapy, the review article focusing on MoS2 nanocomposite platform has not been accounted for yet. The review summarizes recent strategies on design and fabrication of MoS2-based nanocomposites and their modulated properties in cancer treatment. The review also discussed several therapeutic strategies (photothermal, photodynamic, immunotherapy, gene therapy and chemotherapy) and their combinations for efficient cancer therapy along with certain case studies. The review also inculcates various diagnostic techniques viz. magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, photoacoustic imaging and fluorescence imaging for diagnosis of cancer.

Abstract

Derma roller, a device rolled onto the skin to form micropores, is extensively used for cosmetic purposes. The pores thus created are utilized to either result in the induction of collagen production, leading to glowing and wrinkle-free skin or for permeating the applied formulations to the site of action within the skin. Recent studies have shown the benefits of using derma rollers for transdermal delivery of drugs. In the nascent stage, this approach paves a way to successfully breach the stratum corneum and aid in the movement of medications directed towards the dermis and the hair follicles. The review essentially summarizes the evidence of the use of derma rollers in cosmetic setup, their designing, and the preclinical and clinical reports of efficacy, safety, and concerns when translated for pharmaceutical purposes and transdermal drug delivery.

Abstract

Sustained release of drugs over a pre-determined period is required to maintain an effective therapeutic dose for variety of drug delivery applications. Transdermal devices such as polymeric microneedle patches and other microneedle-based devices have been utilized for sustained release of their payload. Swift clearing of drugs can be prevented either by designing a slow-degrading polymeric matrix or by providing physiochemical triggers to different microneedle-based devices for on-demand release. These long-acting transdermal devices prevent the burst release of drugs. This review highlights the recent advances of microneedle-based devices for sustained release of vaccines, hormones, and antiretrovirals with their prospective safe clinical translation.

Abstract

Topical and transdermal application of active pharmaceutical ingredients to the skin is an attractive strategy being explored by formulation scientists to treat disease conditions rather than the oral drug delivery. Several approaches have been attempted, and many of them have emerged with significant clinical potential. However, the delivery of drugs across the skin is an arduous task due to permeation limiting barriers. It, therefore, requires the aid of external agents or carrier systems for efficient permeation. Lipid-based vesicular systems are carriers for the transport of drugs through the stratum corneum (dermal drug delivery) and into the bloodstream for systemic action (transdermal drug delivery) overcoming the barrier properties. This review article describes the various vesicular systems reported for skin delivery of actives with relevant case studies. The vesicular systems presented here are in the order of their advent from conventional systems to the advanced lipid vesicles. The design and development of drugs in vesicular systems have brought a new dimension to the treatment of disease conditions overcoming the permeation limiting barriers, thus improving its efficacy.

Abstract

In the last few decades, a dynamic growth in the number of research works conducted in the area of cyber forensic. This paper gives short reviews analysis and detecting twitter spammers using network forensic approach. In Today's world a social networking service is a platform to build social networks or social relations among people who share interests, activities, backgrounds or real-life connections. Digital forensics is an established field in civilization and criminal investigations. In the enterprise, digital investigations are often associated with incident response the detection and investigation of online social networking spammers. This paper examines the comparison of different forensic tool and its parameters. The previous results focus a number of usability issues that need to be taken into consideration when designing and implementing network forensic tools. In this paper general methodology is discussed for forensic data analysis and also the survey of various forensic data analysis tools and approach in use to capturing data from different resources.

Abstract

"Magnet Technology Development Group" is engaged in focused research and development of indigenous fusion relevant superconducting magnet at Institute for Plasma Research in association with various R&D organizations. The fusion relevant superconducting magnet is under development using a cable in conduit conductor (CICC) with operating current of 30 kA at 12 T and 4.22 K. The 30 kA CICC has been designed in square cross-section (30 mm × 30 mm) consisting twisted Nb3Sn strands and copper strands as superconducting cable, SS316LN tubes as jacket material and SS304L foil as wrapping around the cabled strands. It has been designed on the basis of required critical design parameters, operation requirements and mechanical consideration during its fabrication. Cabling technology required for twisting of Nb3Sn and Copper strand in required configuration of cable is discussed in this paper. The effect of heat treatment on SS316LN jacket material as well as on Nb3Sn strands is mentioned in paper. 100 m long Nb3Sn based CICC is manufactured by pulled through technology on dedicated jacketing line. The manufacturing parameters and quality procedures for development of CICCs is successfully established and have been demonstrated with fabrication of 100 m Nb3Sn based CICC without any technical difficulties.

Abstract

The proposed work provides a description of an Automatic Speaker Recognition System (ASR). It particularly documents all the stages involved in the proposed ASR system starting from the preprocessing stage to the decision making stage. The main aim of this work is to achieve a system with high robustness and user friendly. Voice samples from three different users are used as acoustic material. Feature extraction is done by computing Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) which is used to create reference template. For the purpose of feature matching, Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm is used wherein DTW distance is computed between the test signal and the reference signal. Decision is made by comparing the distance with a predefined threshold value.

10. Development and investigation of timolol maleate and travoprost combination niosomal in situ Gelling system for the treatment of glaucoma

Abstract

The aim of the present investigation was to develop a combination of timolol maleate and travoprost niosomal in situ gelling system for the treatment of glaucoma. Niosomes were prepared by thin film hydration technique using rotary flash evaporator. A 32 factorial design was utilized to study the effect of the molar ratio of Span 60 (X1) and cholesterol (X2) on vesicle size, drug entrapment efficiency and in vitro release study. On the basis of vesicle size, maximum entrapment efficiency and in vitro release of drug, best formulations were selected for the preparation of niosomal in situ gel (Drop). On the basis of gelling time and viscosity, optimized ratio of the polymers was selected for the desired preparation. Selected niosomal batches were dispersed in carbopol 940 and HPMC K4M polymer solution (combination IF6) to form in situ gel niosomal formulations (Drop). The gelling time of the niosomal in situ gel (NIF1) was found to be the best (+++) and the viscosity was found to be 1190 cP. Zeta potential, average size analysis, polydispersibility index value was found to be -45.1 mV, 256.5 nm, 0.228 respectively. In vitro drug release was found to be within the range of 50.23 ± 0.54 to 60.23 ± 0.33% over the period of 6 h. IOP lowering activity of best formulation (NIF1) showed more significant and sustained effect than the marketed eye drops. Best formulation (NIF1) was found to be stable, sterile, non irritant and isotonic. Hence niosomal in situ gelling combination system may have the potential of bringing better application than the conventional ocular therapy with improved ocular bioavailability and increased patient compliance.

Abstract

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have found applications in many image processing tasks, such as feature extraction, image classification, and object recognition. It has also been shown that the inverse of CNNs, so- called deconvolutional neural networks, can be used for inverse problems such as plasma tomography. In essence, plasma tomography consists in reconstructing the 2D plasma profile on a poloidal cross-section of a fusion device, based on line-integrated measurements from multiple radiation detectors. Since the reconstruction process is computationally intensive, a deconvolutional neural network trained to produce the same results will yield a significant computational speedup, at the expense of a small error which can be assessed using different metrics. In this work, we discuss the design principles behind such networks, including the use of multiple layers, how they can be stacked, and how their dimensions can be tuned according to the number of detectors and the desired tomographic resolution for a given fusion device. We describe the application of such networks at JET and COMPASS, where at JET we use the bolometer system, and at COMPASS we use the soft X-ray diagnostic based on photodiode arrays.
