Abstract

Manufacturing-oriented enterprises are investing in novel solutions to adapt their cyber and physical resources to the fast and, yet, unexpected changes of global industrial environment. One of the important trends is to work towards development of cognitive systems which are capable to process and analyze complex data using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based tools and techniques. Therefore, cognition can be already viewed as a requirement for hyper-connected environments e.g., the factories of the future or the Internet of Things (IoT). In this context, there is a need to represent and store the data collected from machines in a format that can be understood and manipulated by both humans and machines. This is feasible by designing and implementing semantic models i.e., ontologies which, in turn, enable inferring implicit data of explicit knowledge, leading to cognition. Moreover, there is a need of granting the access to such information remotely and at system runtime. Within this conceptual article, the authors present a semantic workbench that was developed during a European project aiming at utilization of ontologies for knowledge representation and reasoning in industrial automation systems. Further, this research work proposes the encapsulation of semantic workbench as a service in order to be deployed in cloud-based platforms, hence, enabling remote access of authorized clients at system runtime. Abstract

The speed of the boat is greatly affected by different parameters considered in the environment. A boat without speed control system can be hazardous for it can lead to undesirable events such as engine breakdown or an accident. To mitigate these undesired incidents, a control system is proposed to sustain the boat's speed by automatically controlling the output power of the engine depending on varying factors such as wind speed, water current, and the total weight of the boat and payload. First, the needed variables are to be gathered thru instrumentation and research of the boat's specifications. Second, to find the relation boat between the variables on how they affect the speed of the boat and formulating a working equation that can determine the output power needed to maintain the speed of the boat. Third, is to implement the proposed control system by using the formulated equation in Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) software and last, to evaluate the resulting control system.

Abstract

Biomass generation systems using gasification technology can provide clean energy and can be a dependable source of power to complement the main power supply. Electricity price fixation has an important role in the power market. A generalized pricing method should take care of the demand variations and the market conditions. This article proposes a model for determining the price of electrical energy from biomass-based power plants considering operating constraints and the economic components that influence the electricity price. It incorporates the Clean Development Mechanism benefit, income from by-products, and penalty factors in addition to the economic components. The model developed is applied to a typical biomass gasifier generating unit in India for determining the electricity price.

Abstract

—We present a forecasting strategy based onstationary wavelet transform combined with radial basis function(RBF) neural network to improve the accuracy of 3-month-aheadhake catches forecasting of the fisheries industry in the centralsouthern Chile. The general idea of the proposed forecastingmodel is to decompose the raw data set into an annualcycle component and an inter-annual component by using3-levels stationary wavelet decomposition. The components areindependently predicted using an autoregressive RBF neuralnetwork model. The RBF neural network model is composedof linear and nonlinear weights, which are estimates usingthe separable nonlinear least squares method. Consequently,the proposed forecaster is the co-addition of two predictedcomponents. We demonstrate the utility of the proposed modelon hake catches data set for monthly periods from 1963 to2008. Experimental results on hake catches data show thatthe autoregressive RBF neural network model is effective for3-month-ahead forecasting.Index Terms—Neural network, forecasting, nonlinear leastsquares.

Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the toxicity related to concurrent radiotherapy and anthracycline (AC)-based chemotherapy in the adjuvant treatment of early breast cancer and to investigate the impact of treatment interruptions and the feasibility of this uncommon therapeutic approach.From September 2002 to December 2007, 60 patients were treated at our Centre. The mean age at presentation was 48.5 (range 38-64) years. All patients underwent conservative surgery, and radiotherapy to the entire breast (mean dose 50 Gy; range 46-52 Gy). AC-based regimens consisted of four cycles of AC (doxorubicin plus cyclophosphamide) or four cycles of epirubicin (EPI) followed by four courses of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil (CMF).Concomitant treatment caused acute skin G3 toxicity in 8.9% of patients and one case of G4 toxicity (1.7%). Concerning cardiac assessment, six of the 56 evaluable patients (10.7%) developed an asymptomatic decline of left ventricular ejection fraction10% and20% of the baseline value. Radiotherapy was temporarily stopped in 21.3% and chemotherapy in 57.1% of patients.In our experience, concomitant chemotherapy did not emerge as a significant factor in radiotherapy interruption. Moreover, no severe cardiac events were recorded.

Abstract

Renewable hybrid energy systems have great potential to provide high quality and more reliable power. This offers the advantage that the strengths of each type of sources can be used to complement one another. Renewable hybrid energy systems are mainly recognized for remote area power applications and are nowadays cost-effective where extension of grid supply is expensive. Biomass gasifier-based power generation has a lot of potential for power generation in India. In this article, optimal sizing and operation of a wind-biomass gasifier-based hybrid energy system is proposed. A case study is done using real-time load demand data collected from a site. Economic analysis of wind-biomass gasifier hybrid energy system is also presented. The cost of energy is found to be Rs 3.499 (US$0.078). The cost of energy of the wind-biomass system is also compared with the wind-diesel system. It is found that economically, the wind-gasifier system is a very good alternative for wind-diesel system.

In this article, a hybrid energy system consisting of biomass, wind, solar photovoltaic (SPV), and battery is proposed. The sources are operated to deliver energy at optimum efficiency. An optimization model is developed to supply the available energy to the loads according to the priority. It is also proposed to maintain a fair level of energy storage to meet the peak load demand together with biomass, wind, and solar photovoltaic during low or no solar radiation periods or during low wind periodsA case study was completed using load data collected from three villages (300 km south of Chennai, India). Simulations carried out for a one-year period proved the effectiveness of the developed energy management system by satisfying the load demand, nonlinear seasonal variations, and equipment constraints. Abstract

An electromagnetic model for an induction bearingless electric motor is presented. The analysis of this model explains some previous reported problems. Based on this model and a mechanical one, a simple controller structure is proposed and simulations presented. A laboratory prototype of this machine was constructed and experimental results validate the analysis. The proposed approach can also be used for the design of better controllers. One of the main problems that were identified for the insertion of future wireless applications is that an apparent scarcity exists in the wireless frequency spectrum. However, studies demonstrated that the spectrum is inefficiently distributed as opposed as scarce (Shukla et al, 2007). In Fig. 1, the difference between spectrum scarcity and spectrum misuse is shown. In the first scenario, a new application, represented by U6, wants to use the wireless spectrum but has no space to communicate. In the second scenario, the same application is not able to communicate due to an inefficient distribution.

Abstract

We present a hybridization of two different approaches applied to the well-known Capacitated Facility Location Problem (CFLP). The Artificial Bee algorithm (BA) is used to select a promising subset of locations (warehouses) which are solely included in the Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model. Next, the algorithm solves the subproblem by considering the entire set of customers. The hybrid implementation allows us to bypass certain inherited weaknesses of each algorithm, which means that we are able to find an optimal solution in an acceptable computational time. In this paper we demonstrate that BA can be significantly improved by use of the MIP algorithm. At the same time, our hybrid implementation allows the MIP algorithm to reach the optimal solution in a considerably shorter time than is needed to solve the model using the entire dataset directly within the model. Our hybrid approach outperforms the results obtained by each technique separately. It is able to find the optimal solution in a shorter time than each technique on its own, and the results are highly competitive with the state-of-the-art in large-scale optimization. Furthermore, according to our results, combining the BA with a mathematical programming approach appears to be an interesting research area in combinatorial optimization.

Abstract

In this paper a decoupled reference generation algorithm for harmonic, reactive power and current unbalance compensation is presented. The proposed method has the advantage that it generates the reference for compensation which is immune to supply voltage distortions and ensures that the source has to deliver only the fundamental active component of the load current. It also ensures that the source current after compensation is balanced and at unity power factor. Matlab simulation of the proposed method and a comparison of reference generation by the existing methods have been done and presented in this paper for establishing the validity and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract

Solar energy is emerging as a major source of renewable power in India due to government support. One of the key issues with renewable energy generation is that there is no generalized pricing method and each utility uses a different method for pricing energy. The proposed model gives a generalized method for determining energy price for generating companies, independent power producers, regulatory commissions etc. It incorporates both the economic and performance based factors related to power quality and reliability issues. Also a penalty for deviation from scheduled energy and CDM benefit are included in the model. The study explores average daily solar radiation and the power output of a typical solar generator of 20kW capacity operating in the state of TamilNadu, India. The model developed is applied to this 20kW solar generator for determining the electricity price. The co-relation between energy price and technical and economic parameters is explored. A comparison between the electricity price from the proposed model and the levelized cost is done.

Abstract

Background: Malaria represents one of the most important infectious disease threats to deployed military forces; most personnel from developed countries are nonimmune personnel and are at high risk of infection and clinical malaria. This is especially true for forces deployed to highly-endemic areas in Africa and Southeast Asia where drug-resistant malaria is common. Methods: We conducted an outbreak investigation of malaria cases in Angola where a total of 439 nonimmune Brazilian troops were deployed for a 6-month period in 1995–1996. A post-travel medical evaluation was also performed on 338 (77%) of the 439 soldiers upon return to Brazil. Questionnaire, medical record, thick/thin smear, and serum anti-Plasmodium falciparum antibody titer (by IFA) data were obtained. Peak serum mefloquine (M) and methylmefloquine (MM) metabolite levels were measured in a subsample of 66 soldiers (42 cases, 24 nonmalaria controls) who were taking weekly mefloquine prophylaxis (250 mg). Results: Seventy-eight cases of malaria occurred among the 439 personnel initially interviewed in Angola (attack rate = 18%). Four soldiers were hospitalized, and 3 subsequently died of cerebral malaria. Upon return to Brazil, 63 (19%) of 338 soldiers evaluated were documented to have had clinical symptoms and a diagnosis of malaria while in Angola. In addition, 37 (11%) asymptomatically infected individuals were detected upon return (< 1% parasitemia). Elevated, post-travel anti-P. falciparum IFA titers (≥ 1:64) were seen in 101 (35%) of 292 soldiers tested, and was associated with a prior history of malaria in-country (OR = 3.67, 95% CI 1.98–6.82, p < .001). Noncompliance with weekly mefloquine prophylaxis (250 mg) was associated with a malaria diagnosis in Angola (OR = 3.75, 95% CI 0.97–17.41, p = .03) but not with recent P. falciparum infection (by IFA titer). Mean peak levels (and ratios) of serum M and MM were also found to be lower in those who gave a history of malaria while in Angola. Conclusions: Malaria was a significant cause of morbidity among Brazilian Army military personnel deployed to Angola. Mefloquine prophylaxis appeared to protect soldiers from clinical, but not subclinical, P. falciparum infections. Mefloquine noncompliance and an erratic chemoprophylaxis prevention policy contributed to this large outbreak in nonimmune personnel. This report highlights the pressing need for development of newer, more efficacious and practical, prophylactic drug regimens that will reduce the malaria threat to military forces and travelers.

The information explosion has created a need for large, flat hang-on-the-wall displays to display the ever increasing quantity of information. Rapid advances in computing power and communication technology are outpacing the advances in display technology. Typical monitors have progressed from VGA with 0.3 M pixels, to SXGA with 1.3 M pixels. Top of the line displays are pushing 4 M pixels. Costs of displays with increased number of pixels have risen exponentially with pixel count. Display technology is limiting the exploitation of advances in information and communications technologies. A revolutionary new display technology is needed to enable practical use of the information and communications revolutions. The Sarnoff Corporation and Cambridge Display Technology Ltd. are developing a modular display approach for thin hang-on-the- wall displays that has a cost structure that is linear with pixel count. This approach is based on three display technology advances: smart block matrix addressing, light emitting polymers (LEP), and integrated packaging. Smart block matrix addressing enables the use of low cost addressing while at the same time decoupling the display performance from display size. LEP materials enable low manufacturing cost for bright emissive thin display modules. Integrated packaging enables the mass production of low cost display modules that can be assembled into large area, seamless displays. Together, these three technologies produce for the first time a thin scaleable display. The displays made using this technology have been named 'Array Displays.' Array Display size and shape are determined at assembly, not by the manufacturing line, Pixel densities of about one million pixels per square meter are possible with this low cost manufacturing approach. Abstract

Much has been written about characteristics of excellent firms, but little attention has been given to the possibility that excellence, once attained, is the result of a random process. This study uses market valuation concepts to construct a single measure of the multiple dimensions of excellent asset management to test the stability of excellence for a large sample of firms over a 20-year period. The findings suggest that firms are unable to sustain excellence from year-to-year, but excellence is maintained over longer run holding periods. The results also help explain findings in other studies where excellent firms have subsequently provided low rates of return to investors.

Abstract

Background: Antineoplastic agents induce oxidative stress in biological systems leading to lipid, carbohydrate, protein and DNA damage and affecting cell structure and function. These adverse effects may fuel up the acquisition of new mutations and the development of treatment resistances and secondary malignancies.Methods: We selected 90 breast cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant, adjuvant or palliative chemotherapy, to test the effect of this treatment on the systemic oxidative stress. The patients were distributed in equal groups and paired blood samples, before and after chemotherapy, were extracted. DNA oxidative damage was assessed by alkaline comet assay and a specific inmnoenzymoassay was employed to determine RPA and Ku86 DNA repair activity.Results: We found that neoadjuvant patients presented a marked raise in DNA damage after chemotherapy (Figure 1A). DNA repair activity of KU86 was significantly higher in the adjuvant setting and significantly lower in the neoadjuvant and metastatic settings after chemotherapy. Before chemotherapy administration, KU86 activity was higher in the metastatic and neoadjuvant groups compared to the adjuvant group (Figure 1B).Discussion: Our results show that chemotherapy induces the production of free radicals to an extent that causes a severe DNA damage. High levels of DNA damage are maintained along successive clinical interventions, due to continued production of free radicals during breast cancer treatment, despite the activation of the repair mechanisms that are not sufficient to overcome the effects of the oxidative stress at this level. Our work shows that breast cancer treatment affects the redox status of the patients and, because of its effects into cellular signaling pathways and gene expression, it must be considered as a potential therapeutic target to improve breast cancer treatment and minimize the associated toxicity.Figure legend 1.- Oxidative DNA damage and DNA repair markers in neoadjuvant, adjuvant and metastatic patients, before and after chemotherapy. Abstract

In this paper, a hybrid energy system consisting of biomass, wind, solar photovoltaic (SPV) and battery, is proposed. The sources are operated to deliver energy at optimum efficiency. An optimisation model is developed to supply the available energy to the loads according to the priority. It is also proposed to maintain a fair level of energy storage to meet the peak load demand together with biomass, wind and SPV, during low or no solar radiation periods or during low wind periods. A case study is done using load data collected from three villages (300 km south of Chennai, India). Simulations carried out for one-year period proved the effectiveness of the developed energy management system by satisfying the load demand, non-linear seasonal variations and equipment constraints. Also, with the proposed energy management, it is found that most of the load demand is satisfied, the dumped energy is low and the state of charge of the battery is reasonably in good level. Economic analysis is also carried out and the cost of energy is found to be Rs. 4.20 (US$ 0.1095) per kWh.

In this paper, an investigation of various approximations for the solution of reactive power flow equations, suitable for security assessment, is presented. When the loads are assumed to be a combination of constant current and constant impedance types, the power flow equations can be decoupled exactly. The reactive power flow equations become linear with parameters which are functions of phase angles. Hence, once the phase angles are known, voltage magnitudes can be computed exactly without iterations But approximations are required to simplify computations for on-line application. Various approximations and the factors that influence the accuracy of the solutions are investigated.lt is shown that iterative linear power flow (ILPF) and fast decoupled load flow (FDLF) methods (for voltage computations) can be derived from one set of approximations. Abstract

A series of 205 patients with advanced carcinoma of the tonsil treated with irradiation is reported. The overall 3-year survival for stage, I, II and III patients was 63 per cent and the 5-year survival 35 per cent. The 5-year survival for stage IV patients was 9 per cent. The volume of the tumor and the extent of lymph node metastases were important prognostic factors for survival. The strongest factor influencing survival was the initial performance status independent o state (p less than 0.001).

Abstract

From 1947 through 1977, 93 patients with carcinoma of the nasopharynx were treated. Most (83%) of the patients, had stage IV disease including 9 per cent who had a systemic tumor dissemination. Cervical lymph node metastases were present in 73 (78%) patients. The 5-year actuarial survival for all 93 patients was 13 per cent, 40 for stage II, 18 for stage III and 10 for stage IV patients. The factors with significant influence on survival were Initial Performance Status and T4 disease. The presence of N3 disease was a good indicator of a subsequent systemic tumor spread.

Abstract

Virtual image and cockpit applications require high resolution, high brightness, high contrast, full color displays with grayscale and which are also lightweight, small in size and have low power consumption. These requirements are well matched to active-matrix liquid-crystal flat-panel displays. In particular, polysilicon active-matrix displays with their high performance and capability for integrated scanners are ideal candidates to satisfy cockpit display requirements. A design analysis is presented for two types of avionic display, a 1-in x 1-in, 1000 x 1000 pixel helmet-mounted display, and a 8-in x 8-in, 1024 x 1024 sub-pixel color cockpit display. The analysis will show that the performance requirements for the display can be met with existing polysilicon device performance and current photolithography equipment. A screen brightness of 75 ft-L can be obtained for the cockpit display, using fluorescent lamp backlighting. Grayscale is obtained through on-plate digital circuitry. The feasibility of many of these concepts has been demonstrated in the design of a 192 x 192 active-matrix array with integrated data and select scanners. The design features of this array, as well as its performance will be presented. The display is capable of showing real-time color NTSC TV signals, with limited grayscale capability. The display operates with a 180 frame/sec refresh rate, while the shift registers operate at speeds up to 2 MHz.
