There is a lack of knowledge regarding the parameters needed for the effective seismic performance assessment of historical stone masonry buildings. The paper presents the results of an extensive experimental campaign consisting of four compression and fifteen in-plane cyclic shear tests on three-leaf ashlar stone masonry walls and its constituents. The morphology, level of vertical load, and testing boundary conditions were systematically varied, and their influence on the load-bearing and deformation capacities, stiffness, ductility and energy dissipation was analysed. Good consolidation of the inner core enables in-plane failure mechanism of the walls to occur without decisive out-of-plane damage. The boundary conditions applied significantly influence the failure modes and large deformation capacities obtained, whereas transverse connections in the case of a shear failure mechanism do not significantly influence the overall lateral in-plane response of walls.

In light of the forthcoming second generation Eurocodes (EC), the results of conducted systematic in-plane cyclic and compressive tests on three-leaf stone masonry walls are discussed following new requirements and provisions. The new proposal for EC8-3 for existing buildings is based on partial factors safety approach, though it considers different uncertainties in defining input parameters for effective seismic performance-based assessment. Prior to its application, massive calibration effort will be needed since there is no standardized method for shear testing of masonry walls. In this paper, the performance limit states damage, resistance, and displacement capacities from conducted test results were evaluated and assessed through comparison with analytical solutions and imposed limit values, as stated in existing codes. The test results provide a much higher deformation capacity than the limits provided in both existing and new proposal of EC8-3 as well as those in the ASCE code provisions. The reason for this lies in the soft, "ductile" mortar for which the presumed resistance according to code provisions should be significantly higher when considering good quality ashlar three-leaf stone masonry. This paper presents the results of an experimental campaign investigating the seismic behaviour of full-size cross laminated timber (CLT) wall systems with sound-insulated shear-tension angle brackets. The main aim of the study was to investigate the influence of more and less flexible soundproofing bedding under the CLT wall. The paper shows a comparison of lateral load-bearing capacity, displacement capacity, ductility and stiffness obtained from racking tests on uninsulated specimens and specimens with various types of bedding insulation and levels of vertical load. Moreover, an analytical procedure to estimate the lateral load-displacement response of CLT walls with bedding insulation is proposed. This model is verified by direct comparison to the experimentally determined lateral load-displacement backbone curves. The results show that the elastomeric bedding does not have a significant effect on the bearing capacity of the wall system tested, but it reduces the stiffness and increases the displacement capacity. Due to the large decrease in stiffness, the insulation causes an overall reduction in ductility. The analytical estimation proposed was able to capture the reduction in lateral stiffness and adequately predict the load-bearing capacity.

In cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings, in order to reduce the disturbing transmission of sound over the flanking parts, special insulation layers are used between the CLT walls and slabs, together with insulated angle-bracket connections. How-ever, the influence of such CLT connections and insulation layers on the seismic resistance of CLT structures has not yet been studied. In this paper, experimental investigation on CLT panels installed on insulation bedding and fastened to the CLT floor using an innovative, insulated, steel angle bracket, are presented. The novelty of the investigated angle-bracket connection is, in addition to the sound insulation, its resistance to both shear as well as uplift forces as it is intended to be used instead of traditional angle brackets and hold-down connections to simplify the construction. Therefore, monotonic and cyclic tests on the CLT wall-to-floor connections were performed in shear and tensile/compressive load direction. Specimens with and without insulation under the angle bracket and between the CLT panels were studied and compared. Tests of insulated specimens have proved that the insulation has a marginal influence on the load-bearing capacity; however, it significantly influences the stiffness characteristics. In general, the experiments have shown that the connection could also be used for seismic resistant CLT structures, although some minor improvements should be made. Nasl. z nasl. zaslona. An experimental study on the effects of electroporation on pancreatic tissue was performed in pigs, and the fentanyl transdermal patch (FTP) was used postoperatively as part of multimodal pain management. Ingestion of an FTP, which resulted in fentanyl intoxication, was suspected 5 days after placement in one of the experimental pigs. The pig was first dysphoric, running in the stall, panting and vocalizing until it finally became depressed and it remained lying on the floor. Ingestion of an FTP was not observed but the fentanyl plasma concentration on the day of intoxication was 20.7 ng/ml, while at its peak after FTP administration it was only 0.492 ng/ml. The intoxication was successfully treated with a single intramuscular naloxone injection.

Objective To investigate the pharmacokinetics of carprofen after a single intravenous (IV) dose and multiple oral doses administered to pigs undergoing electroporation of the pancreas. Study design Prospective experimental study. Animals A group of eight female pigs weighing 31.74 ± 2.24 kg (mean ± standard deviation). Methods Carprofen 4 mg kg−1 was administered IV after placement of a central venous catheter during general anaesthesia with isoflurane. Blood samples were collected 30 seconds before and 5, 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes and 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours after carprofen administration. Subsequently, the same dose of carprofen was administered orally, daily, for 6 consecutive days and blood collected at 36, 48, 60, 72, 96, 120, 144 and 168 hours after initial carprofen administration. Plasma was analysed using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Standard pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by compartmental analysis of plasma concentration–time curves. Data are presented as mean ± standard error. Results The initial plasma concentration of IV carprofen was estimated at 54.57 ± 3.92 μg mL−1 and decreased to 8.26 ± 1.07 μg mL−1 24 hours later. The plasma elimination curve showed a bi-exponential decline: a rapid distribution phase with a distribution half-life of 0.21 ± 0.03 hours and a slower elimination phase with an elimination half-life of 17.31 ± 3.78 hours. The calculated pharmacokinetic parameters were as follows: the area under the plasma concentration–time curve was 357.3 ± 16.73 μg mL−1 hour, volume of distribution was 0.28 ± 0.07 L kg−1 and plasma clearance rate was 0.19 ± 0.009 mL minute−1 kg−1. The plasma concentration of carprofen, administered orally from days 2 to 7, varied from 9.03 ± 1.87 to 11.49 ± 2.15 μg mL−1. Conclusions and clinical relevance Carprofen can be regarded as a long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in pigs.

Microplastics are found in marine and freshwater environments; however, their specific sources are not yet well understood. Understanding sources will be of key importance in efforts to reduce emissions into the environment. We examined the emissions of microfibers from domestic washing of a new microfiber polyester fleece textile. Analyzing released fibers collected with a 200 μm filter during 10 mild, successive washing cycles showed that emission initially decreased and then stabilized at approx. 0.0012 wt%. This value is our estimation for the long-term release of fibers during each washing. Use of detergent and softener did not significantly influence emission. Release of fibers during tumble drying was approx. 3.5 times higher than during washing. Innovative hybrid structural components composed of cross-laminated timber frame and laminated glass infill were tested to examine their response on the reverse-cyclic loading. Ductile timber-frame joints with glued-in steel rods and especially designed glass-to-timber contacts with no adhesive proved to provide high ductility and energy dissipation of structural components. In total, 20 tests of full-scale specimens were carried out; three bare frames, six frames with single glazing and eleven frames with double glazing. Deformation capacity, lateral strength, stiffness and strength deterioration and energy dissipation capacity were analysed in order to provide data for the future development of computational models and design guidance for the new codes.

Aim The purpose of this study is to review the Slovenian experience with the diagnostics, treatment and outcome in pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. Methods Children and adolescent diagnosed with MS and followed by Department of Child, Adolescent and Developmental Neurology, University Childrens' Hospital Ljubljana, between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2012 were included. Data from patients' documentation were analyzed retrospectively to record demographic data, clinical presentation, paraclinical findings, disability progression, relapse rate and treatment strategies. Results The study includes 38 patients up to 18 years with MS diagnosis, with female: male ratio 2.8:1 and the incidence of 0.81 per 100.000 children of 0–18 years. The mean age at the time of diagnosis was 15 years 4 months. Most frequent presenting symptoms were sensory, motor, brain-stem, visual and ataxia and 65% of patients had a relapse in the first year. The value of paraclinical findings was asessed. 74% of patients with definite MS and 36% of those with clinically isolated syndrome received disease modifyng therapy and 68% of them was not affected at the follow-up. Interpretation The characteristics of pediatric MS patients in Slovenia disclose higher annual relapse rates than in adults but also favorable impact of disease modifying treatment on a clinical course. Our data suggest a good treatment tolerance but also the influence of the formulation on a decision to start or switch the treatment.

The paper presents the application of the seismic assessment procedure developed in the PERPETUATE project on a single monument, the Neoclassical School in the Medieval City of Rhodes. The PERPETUATE methodology for the estimation of seismic risk of cultural heritage assets is based on the principles of performance-based assessment (PBA), using nonlinear static procedures. The outcome of the PBA methodology is the maximum seismic intensity measure compatible to different performance levels. The focus of the paper is on the application of the methodology, considering the effects of both soil–foundation–structure interaction (SFSI) and masonry foundation flexibility on the building response, before and after rehabilitation design measures. It is found that SFSI and foundation flexibility produce larger displacements and reduce the maximum ground acceleration that the building can sustain by over 50 %. However, despite the detrimental effects of SFSI on the acceleration capacity, SFSI and foundation flexibility may have a favorable effect on the structure safety, as they modify the collapse mechanism. The results of seismic analyses showed that the building, in its current state, does not sustain the demands for the Life Safety and Collapse Prevention performance levels. Stiffening the roof of the structure and providing sufficient anchorage to the structure, along with systematic grouting of the masonry walls, are the principal rehabilitation decisions considered herein. Mitigation measures were evaluated, considering SFSI and the analyses revealed the adequacy of the proposed retrofitting measure, which combines vertical (wall) and horizontal (roof) stiffening.

In the paper, possibilities of correlation of structural damage and damage of attached artistic assets on multi-leaf stone masonry walls by means of destructive and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods are investigated. Results from two testing campaigns carried out at the University of Genoa and University of Ljubljana are briefly presented. In particular, diagonal tests with different levels of pre-compression and shear tests under different boundary conditions were carried out in Genoa and Ljubljana, respectively. During the tests, different damage limit states (DL) of both masonry walls (SE) and attached plasters (AA) were investigated by means of NDT’s. Two different types of rubble stone masonry were considered (uncoursed random rubble vs. coursed squared rubble). For AA the results are presented in relative form in dependence from the DL of SE. Obtained results are influenced both by the type of test and tested masonry. Results of NDT revealed strong potential and a need for data fusing of both investigated methods for the evaluation of the state of the degradation behind the plaster.

Within the framework of PERPETUATE project for the case study in Slovenia, the 150 year old Kolizej Palace in Ljubljana was set. The building was for a long time neglected and severely deteriorated due to ageing and moisture problems. Despite the overall opinion among conservators upon its preservation, it was set to be demolished. Prior it’s demolishing in 2011 extensive on-site investigation was carried out, which provided valuable data regarding the influence of deteriorated masonry on the seismic response of the building. Experimental tests proved almost completely saturated moisture conditions in the ground level of the building, while all the stories above were in almost dry condition. The results of tests on masonry revealed that moisture content and state of deterioration affected both strength and stiffness properties of built masonry in large extend. Regardless adopted modelling strategies the vulnerability assessment of the Kolizej Palace has proved that the building in its latest condition was far behind the current code requirements in respect to both static and seismic actions.

The structural performance of historical masonry elements can be understood provided the following factors are known: geometry; the characteristics of its masonry texture and morphology, state of damage and decay, physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics of the components (units, infill, mortar); the characteristics of built masonry as a composite material. In order to quantify the mechanical properties of the masonry both laboratory and in-situ tests are required. However, in the case of cultural heritage assets, the setting up of an effective knowledge procedure is strictly related to the minimization of invasiveness on the structure, with the aim of its conservation, rather than the cost–benefit optimization: thus it is essential to have available reference parameters to be adopted for different masonry types. Within this context, this State-of-the-Art paper on this topic is organized with integrated outcomes from the test campaigns carried out through the PERPETUATE project, that are also briefly presented. Reference parameters for effective seismic assessment are provided both for brick and stone masonry together with their upper and lower bound values for both mechanical parameters and damage limits for which proper limit states (LS) may be associated. Apart from the LS for structural elements (SE), the relevant LS’s for artistic assets attached to the SE are also presented in this paper.

Universal tractor transmission oil (UTTO) is multipurpose tractor oil formulated for use in transmissions, final drives, wet brakes and hydraulic systems of tractors employing a common oil reservoir. In the present work, the results of a series of tests performed to evaluate vegetable based oils are presented. Tribological properties of formulated rapeseed and high oleic sunflower based UTTO were investigated in the standard and non-standard test procedures and compared with the properties of commercially available synthetic and mineral UTTO. Performances of test oils were demonstrated by using SRV high frequency test device, four-ball test rig, and FZG spur gear test rig. For final tests a laboratory hydraulic system and a spur gear test rig were used.

Background Increased plasma histamine levels lead to pathological events. Endothelial cells actively participate in histamine clearance by promoting its uptake via yet unidentified carriers, thus limiting histamine effects. The organic cation transporter 3 (OCT3) and plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) are the two most prominent transporters for endogenous monoamines. OCT3 and PMAT show Na/K-ATPase independency. Both are highly sensitive to inhibition by the isocyanine compound, decynium-22. However, OCT3 is highly sensitive to corticosteron, whereas PMAT is not. We showed in the past that decynium-22 inhibits histamine uptake in cultured human umbilical vascular endothelial cells (HUVEC). In the present study we identified the expression of OCT3 and PMAT in freshly isolated and cultured HUVEC as well as some characteristics of histamine uptake in cultured HUVEC such as ouabain and corticosteron sensitivity.

In conclusion, the studies on the mechanisms of astrocytic neurotrophin regulation suggest the importance of positive cooperation between the excitatory monoaminergic neuronal activity and astrocytic neurotrophic support (neuron-astrocyte crosstalk) in the developing, mature and diseased brain.

Publisher Summary This chapter explains how intramedullary lesions distort the anatomical features of the spinal cord dorsum. This makes it hard for the surgeon to carry out a myelotomy exactly at the midline. The electrode consists of eight parallel wires spaced 1 mm apart, each having a diameter of 76 μm and an exposed recording surface of 2 mm. This miniature electrode records somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) after tibial and median nerve stimulation. After each of the tibial nerves at the ankles is electrically stimulated, SEPs are recorded with the minuscule electrode separately from each of the eight parallel recording sites with a reference needle electrode placed in nearby muscle. Recordings are obtained and exposed to an amplitude gradient across the eight recording sites with maximum amplitude toward the midline and decreasing amplitude toward the dorsal root entry zone. SEPs consist of multispike activity lasting about 10 ms with mean amplitudes ranging from 0.7 to 43 μV. SEPs recorded over the cervical spinal cord after median nerve stimulation show an amplitude gradient as well, but in the opposite direction of the tibial nerve SEPs.
