Objective To outline the epidemiological profile and identify the hospital outcomes of patients submitted to neuromuscular scoliosis correction surgery. Methods This was a descriptive study that included 50 patients hospitalized following surgery for neuromuscular scoliosis in a tertiary-level hospital in São Paulo from January 2017 to July 2017. The variables were collected retrospectively from the patients’ medical records: age, sex, main diagnosis, length of hospital stay, duration of surgery, hospital complications, and mobility. Results Surgeries were performed in boys and girls in similar proportions, adolescents, many with cerebral palsy (42%), with mean hospital stay of 10.8 days. Fifty-two percent presented some complication, such as constipation. Infection of the surgical site was present in 12% of the sample. Forty-two percent had moderate to intense pain and only 2% did not achieve the proposed mobility goals. Conclusion We observed that the epidemiological profile presented data consistent with the scarce literature available, while the definitions of complications, incidence, and hospital outcomes available in the literature were varied quite a bit from the findings in this study. RESUMO Objetivos Traçar o perfil epidemiológico e identificar os desfechos hospitalares de pacientes submetidos à correção cirúrgica de escoliose neuromuscular. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, em que foram incluídos 50 pacientes internados em pós-operatório de escoliose neuromuscular, em um hospital de nível terciário em São Paulo, no período de janeiro de 2017 a julho de 2017. As variáveis foram coletadas de forma retrospectiva, a partir dos prontuários dos pacientes: idade, sexo, diagnóstico principal, tempo de internação, tempo de duração da cirurgia, complicações hospitalares e mobilidade. Resultados As cirurgias foram realizadas em meninos e meninas em proporção semelhante, adolescentes, em sua maioria com paralisia cerebral (42%), sendo que o tempo de internação médio foi de 10,8 dias e 52% apresentaram alguma complicação como a obstipação. A infecção de sítio cirúrgico esteve presente em 12% da amostra, 42% apresentaram dor moderada à intensa e só 2% não cumpriram as metas de mobilidade propostas. Conclusões Observamos que o perfil epidemiológico apresentou dados consistentes com a escassa literatura disponível, enquanto a definição de complicação, incidência e desfechos hospitalares disponíveis na literatura foram bastante variáveis com os achados neste estudo. Métodos Se trata de un estudio descriptivo, en el que fueron incluidos 50 pacientes internados en postoperatorio de escoliosis neuromuscular, en un hospital de nivel terciario en São Paulo, en el período de enero de 2017 a julio de 2017. Las variables fueron colectadas de forma retrospectiva, a partir de los prontuarios de los pacientes: edad, sexo, diagnóstico principal, tiempo de internación, tiempo de duración de la cirugía, complicaciones hospitalarias y movilidad. Resultados Las cirugías fueron realizadas en niños y niñas en proporción semejante, adolescentes, en su mayoría con parálisis cerebral (42%), siendo que el tiempo de internación promedio fue de 10,8 días y 52% presentaron alguna complicación como el estreñimiento. La infección de sitio quirúrgico estuvo presente en 12% de la muestra, 42% presentaron dolor moderado a intenso y sólo 2% no cumplieron las metas de movilidad propuestas. Conclusiones Observamos que el perfil epidemiológico presentó datos consistentes con la escasa literatura disponible, mientras que la definición de complicación, incidencia y resultados hospitalarios disponibles en la literatura fueron bastante variables con los hallazgos en este estudio. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: It is possible that patients submitted to lumbar spine surgery present chronic pain and need a multidimensional assessment of postoperative pain due to the variables that influence pain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between uni and multidimensional scales for postoperative pain assessment. METHODS: Longitudinal and observational study carried out in the inpatient units of an orthopedic reference hospital in São Paulo. 53 patients were selected in the preoperative period of lumbar spine arthrodesis, 28 were excluded and 25 were evaluated with the numerical verbal scale and Brief Pain Inventory on the preoperative day and on postoperative day 2. RESULTS: In the sample, all patients had chronic pain with a mean previous pain time of 9.24 years. There was variation between the pre and postoperative periods on the Brief Pain Inventory in almost all items, but only the item regarding the amount of pain ‘’right now’’ (in the moment) was equivalent to the numerical verbal scale (Kappa=almost complete correlation). CONCLUSION: The numerical verbal scale and Brief Pain Inventory were not comparable since the Numerical Verbal Scale showed a worsening of postoperative pain, while the Brief Pain Inventory reflected improvement in the perception of postoperative pain. The Brief Pain Inventory seemed to be a better tool for pain assessment in this study RESUMO JUSTIFICATIVA E OBJETIVOS: É possível que pacientes submetidos a cirurgia de coluna lombar apresentem dor crônica e necessitem de avaliação multidimensional da dor pós-operatória devido às variáveis que influenciam a dor. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a correlação entre as escalas uni e multidimensional para avaliação de dor pós-operatória. MÉTODOS: Estudo longitudinal e observacional desenvolvido nas unidades de internação de um hospital ortopédico de referência em São Paulo. Foram selecionados 53 pacientes no pré-operatório de artrodese da coluna lombar, 28 foram excluídos e 25 avaliados com a escala verbal numérica e o Inventário Breve de Dor no dia do pré-operatório e no 2° dia de pós-operatório. RESULTADOS: Na amostra todos os pacientes apresentavam dor crônica com tempo médio de dor prévia de 9,24 anos. Observou-se variação entre o pré e pós-operatório no Inventário Breve de Dor em quase todos os itens, mas apenas o item sobre a dor ‘’neste momento” se equiparou à escala verbal numérica (Kappa=correlação quase completa). CONCLUSÃO: A escala verbal numérica e o Inventário Breve de Dor não foram equiparáveis uma vez que a Escala Verbal Numérica evidenciou piora da dor pós-operatória, enquanto o Inventário Breve de Dor refletiu melhora na percepção da dor pós-operatória. O Inventário Breve de Dor pareceu ser melhor instrumento para avaliação de dor neste estudo.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pain education is a tool that helps health professionals in the biopsychosocial approach and in pain management in patients with musculoskeletal pain. The objectives of the study were to verify the effects of a pain education program in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain. The evaluated outcomes were pain, kinesiophobia, catastrophizing, quality of life, central sensitization and perception of the disease. METHODS: Observational, retrospective study. Data from 24 participants with chronic pain, mean age 57 years, were analyzed, 83% of whom were female. Patients participated in a pain education program, which addressed topics such as acceptance, pain alarm, sleep, relaxation, negative thoughts, return to activities, relationships, and exercises. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Children with cerebral palsy are affected by postoperative painful processes. These children's pain may be underestimated due to difficult communication especially when a specific tool is not used. The objective of this study was to evaluate the pain in children with cerebral palsy in postoperative orthopedic surgery and the pain perception of parents and health professionals. METHODS: It is a cross-sectional, observational study performed at Associação de Apoio à Criança Deficiente in São Paulo. Fifty-one children with cerebral palsy were recruited, aged between 6-15 years, 51 parents/caregivers and 51 health professionals. Pain assessment was measured by an observer during the routine procedures in which the child was manipulated. After the procedure, the observer asked health professionals and parents about the child's pain. RESULTS: Eighty-two percent of patients had postoperative pain, and of these, 50% had moderate and intense pain. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological aspects of proximal humerus fractures and describe the profile of patients with proximal humerus fractures hospitalized and treated at Hospital São Paulo, between 2008 and 2013. Methods: Hospital records were retrospectively analyzed for surgically treated patients diagnosed with proximal humerus fracture. Age, gender, injury mechanism, length of hospital stay, performed treatment and associated diseases were considered. Results: From all patients studied, 52 were female at their sixth decade of life. As for the injury mechanism, fall from height was the main cause for women (88.46%) and for man it was motorcycle accidents (31.42%). Fixation with locked plate was the most frequently used treatment. Conclusion: Most patients were female in their fifth decade of life, injured mainly by fall from height. Fixation with locked plate was the most frequently used treatment and the patients were admitted for 7 days, on average. Level of Evidence II, Retrospective Study.

A fasciite plantar e causa frequente de dor no calcanhar e no pe que afeta cerca de 2 milhoes de americanos por ano. A fisioterapia e o tratamento inicialmente prescrito, e o sucesso do tratamento depende da adesao dos pacientes. Objetivo: Elaborar um manual de orientacoes e exercicios para pacientes com fasciite plantar, analisar a clareza, nivel de compreensao e a satisfacao dos pacientes leigos e fisioterapeutas acerca do manual. Metodo: Foram selecionados 30 fisioterapeutas e 30 pacientes que nao fossem analfabetos e que nao apresentassem nenhum deficit cognitivo. Foi aplicado um manual contendo 10 exercicios e orientacoes para pacientes com fasciite plantar. Resultados: Todos os exercicios e orientacoes tiveram alto indice de compreensao (acima de 90%). O manual foi considerado excelente pelos leigos e otimo pelos fisioterapeutas. Conclusao: O manual apresentou um nivel relevante de compreensao tanto entre os fisioterapeutas como entre os leigos, alem de alto indice de satisfacao entre as populacoes abordadas. Portanto, o manual pode servir de ferramenta complementar no tratamento dos pacientes com fasciite plantar.

Knee osteoarthritis presents pain, loss of function, and joint swelling as its main symptoms. The joint swelling is defined as an accumulation of fluid in the joint due to the inflammatory process that contributes to progressive joint damage; it causes limitation in the range of knee motion, decreases proprioception, and affects the functional capacity and the quality of life of the individual. The measurement of articular cartilage volume is essential in clinical practice. The measurement of knee circumference using a measuring tape is a widely used, inexpensive, and accessible technique. However, as it is considered subjective, there is no evidence to support its use. Objective: To examine the reproducibility of this technique in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Method: Participants underwent two evaluations performed by two independent raters, at different times. The measurement of knee circumference was performed using a measuring tape 150 cm in length, taking as reference the superior pole of the patella. Results: The knee circumferences of 114 individuals were measured. According to the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), we observed a strong correlation (ICC = 0.98) between raters. Conclusion: The use of a measuring tape as a resource to measure knee circumference in individuals with osteoarthritis is a reliable and reproducible method.

OBJETIVOS: Avaliar o posicionamento estático da escápula no gradil costal em indivíduos saudáveis, por meio da avaliação clínica e radiográfica, avaliar a confiabilidade interavaliador do exame clínico e verificar a confiabilidade do método de avaliação em comparação ao exame radiográfico. MÉTODOS: Foram selecionados 30 indivíduos adultos de ambos os sexos sem diagnóstico de doenças nos ombros. O exame clínico estático, seguindo o protocolo sugerido por Burkhart e cols., foi realizado repetidamente por 2 examinadores independentes; a seguir, foi realizado o exame radiográfico, que posteriormente foi examinado pelo primeiro avaliador. RESULTADOS: 73,3% dos indivíduos apresentaram o posicionamento da escápula considerado dentro da normalidade. A confiabilidade interavaliador e a confiabilidade do exame clínico em relação à radiografia foram considerados baixa e muito baixa respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: A reprodutibilidade da avaliação realizada por Burkhart foi considerada de satisfatória a boa, enquanto que a reprodutibilidade inter-avaliador do exame clínico estático e a reprodutibilidade do exame clínico com a radiografia foram consideradas de pobres a satisfatórias. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the static positioning of the scapula on the rib cage in healthy subjects by means of clinical and radiographic evaluation to assess inter-examiner reliability of clinical examination and verify the reliability of this evaluation method compared to the radiographic examination. METHODS: We selected 30 adult individuals of both sexes with no diagnosis of shoulder pathology. The static clinical examination, following the protocol suggested by Burkhart et al, was performed repeatedly by two independent examiners, followed by the radiographic examination, which was later examined by the first evaluator. RESULTS: 73.3% of the subjects showed positioning of the scapula considered normal. The inter-examiner reliability and that of the clinical examination in relation to radiography were considered low and very low, respectively. CONCLUSION: The reproducibility of the evaluation performed by Burkhart was considered satisfactory to good, while the inter-examiner reproducibility of the clinical examination and the static reproducibility of the clinical examination with radiography were considered poor to satisfactory.
