Abstract

This paper considers three aspects of the job insecurity facing British men in the last two decades. The probability of becoming unemployed, the costs of unemployment in terms of real wage losses and the probability that the continuously employed will experience substantial real wage losses. The first of these has not risen in the last two decades, the second has risen by around 40% and the third has risen, particularly for the top skill groups.

Jasek (1) Keywords: model-based intelligent support; operational environments; enterprise integration Abstract: Enterprise integration research focuses on the development and integration of models with the goal of analysis and improvement of an enterprise. Cognitive engineering research focuses on the problem solving requirements of humans in complex systems with the goal of designing more effective systems. This paper presents a particular approach to cognitive engineering - model-based intelligent support - and draws implications to the design and development of enterprise models and tools. Specifically, we discuss the realm of distributed supervisory control, propose a knowledge architecture and theory of human - machine interaction to support cooperative problem solving, and link this to current enterprise integration research. Examples are drawn from the spacecraft operations domain. Abstract

This paper presents a new method for examining the productive nature of education. It outlines an econometric model which simultaneously estimates an earnings function and a production function for workers and the firms where they are employed. This approach permits a direct comparison to be made between the relative wage and relative productivity of workers with different levels of education. Using a unique data set from Ghana, two primary questions are addressed: (1) Are educated workers more productive than workers with no formal education? and (2) Do earnings differentials between workers with different levels of education reflect genuine productivity differentials? The results suggest that education is positively correlated with productivity in Ghanaian manufacturing, and that firms pay workers according to their productivity. The future of sugar shipments from Cuba remains uncertain, even though it has been able to ship its May sugar export commitments. Force majeure was declared on Jun 03, 1993, allowing the country not to meet contractual terms because of events beyond its control, but a number of ships trapped by the declaration have been able to load and sail. Difficulties with Cuban sugar have boosted raw sugar values elsewhere, as supplies are very limited at present.

Baltic Exchange board chairman Peter Tudball revealed that the exchange has not decided on whether to accept an insurance settlement for its bomb-damaged St Mary Axe building. Tudball noted that insurers have offered approximately $16.5 million to rebuilding the building but that this amount was below the exchange's estimated cost of $24.5 million. However, he commented that the strong clamor from members to return to the building could play a significant role in the exchange's decision. The St Mary Axe building was destroyed by an Irish Republican Army bomb on Apr 10, 1992.

Maintenance and handling problems with port equipment and a lack of sugar reaching the ports are hurting Cuba's sugar shipments. Delays in sugar shipments are allegedly traced to low harvests while the technical problems arose when Russian advisers left Cuba after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Bad weather also held back transport of sugar to the ports and added to the delay.

Improving quality and patient safety, containing costs and delivering value-for-money are the key drivers of change in the delivery of healthcare and have stimulated a shift from an activity-based service to a service based on patient-outcomes. The delivery of an outcomes-based healthcare agenda requires that the real value of laboratory medicine to all stakeholders be understood, effectively defined and communicated. The value proposition of any product or service is the link between the provider and the needs of the customer describing the utility of the product or service in terms of benefit to the customer. The framework of a value proposition for laboratory medicine provides the core business case that drives key activities in the evolution and maintenance of high quality healthcare from research through to adoption and quality improvement in an established service.
