This research describes the gene expression of molecules related to inflammation and bone metabolism in all patients submitted to dental implant surgery attended at a Brazilian institution. A convenience sample was collected over 2 years. The bone samples were processed for extraction of total RNA and reverse transcription of cDNA. Relative quantification by real-time polymerase chain reaction of target genes was performed. The sample was characterized demographically and according heath conditions. The patients were grouped. The control group was composed of 17 healthy patients, 6 patients were included in the antihypertensive therapy group, 3 were smokers, another 3 were smokers and were under antihypertensive treatment, and 3 were ex-smokers (smoked for 10 years but had quit for at least 5 years). The ex-smoker group presented the highest values, and the Hypertensive group presented the lowest values of Macrophage colony-stimulating factor, Osteonectin, Bone Morphogenetic Protein II, and Integrin. All smokers demonstrated expression values comparable to the Control group. The highest expression values of Osteopontin, RUNX, and Alkaline Phosphatase were observed in the Hypertensive and the Smoker group, while the lowest values were found in the Hypertensive group. Smokers, Ex-smokers, and the Control group demonstrated similar values. As conclusion, gene downregulation was observed in patients under anti-hypertensive therapy. Smoke seems to reduce expression of genes involve in bone formation and increase genes responsible for resorptive activity. This pattern of genic expression may be involved in higher implant loss, observed in smokers. Stop smoke seems to return expression of some of these genes. Esta investigación describe la expresión génica de moléculas de la inflamación y el metabolismo óseo en pacientes sometidos a cirugía de implantes dentales tratados en una institución brasileña. Se recogió una muestra de conveniencia durante 2 años. Las muestras de hueso se procesaron para la extracción del ARN total y la transcripción inversa del ADNc. Se realizó la cuantificación relativa por reacción en cadena de la polimerasa, en tiempo real, de los genes diana. Los pacientes fueron agrupados em: sanos, grupo en terapia antihipertensiva, grupo fumadores, grupo fumadores y estaban en tratamiento antihipertensivo y grupo exfumadores (fumaban durante 10 años, pero dejar de fumar durante al menos 5 años). El grupo de exfumadores tuvo las expresiones más altas y el grupo de hipertensos tuvo los valores más bajos de Factor estimulante de colonias de macrófagos, osteonectina, proteína morfogenética ósea e integrina. Todos los fumadores demostraron valores de expresión comparables a los del grupo de control. Los valores más altos de expresión de Osteopontina, RUNX y fosfatasa alcalina se observaron en los grupos Hipertenso y Fumador, mientras que los valores más bajos se encontraron en el grupo Hipertenso. Fumadores, exfumadores y el grupo Control mostraron valores similares. Como conclusión, el humo parece reducir la expresión de genes implicados en la formación ósea y aumentar los genes responsables de la actividad de resorción. Este patrón de expresión génica puede estar involucrado en una mayor pérdida de implantes, observada en fumadores. Detener el humo parece devolver la expresión de algunos de estos genes. Esta pesquisa descreve a expressão gênica de moléculas relacionadas à inflamação e ao metabolismo ósseo em todos os pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de implante dentário atendidos em uma instituição brasileira. Uma amostra de conveniência foi coletada ao longo de 2 anos. As amostras ósseas foram processadas para extração do RNA total e transcrição reversa do cDNA. A quantificação relativa por reação em cadeia da polimerase, em tempo real, dos genes alvo, foi realizada. Os pacientes foram agrupados. O grupo controle foi composto por 17 pacientes saudáveis, 6 foram incluídos no grupo em terapia anti-hipertensiva, 3 eram fumantes, outros 3 eram fumantes e estavam em tratamento anti-hipertensivo e 3 eram ex-fumantes (fumaram por 10 anos, mas pararam de fumar por pelo menos 5 anos). O grupo ex-fumante apresentou as maiores expressões e o grupo Hipertenso apresentou os menores valores de Fator estimulador de colônias de macrófagos, Osteonectina, Proteína Morfogenética Óssea II e Integrina. Os maiores valores de expressão de Osteopontina, RUNX e fosfatase alcalina foram observados no grupo Hipertenso e Fumante, enquanto os menores valores foram encontrados no grupo Hipertenso. Fumantes, Ex-fumantes e o grupo Controle demonstraram valores semelhantes. Como conclusão o fumo parece reduzir a expressão de genes envolvidos na formação óssea e aumentar genes responsáveis pela atividade reabsortiva. Esse padrão de expressão gênica pode estar envolvido na maior perda de implantes observada em fumantes. Parar de fumar parece retornar a expressão de alguns desses genes.

Introduction: Female smoker's present increased susceptibility to several diseases when compared to the opposite gender. However, there are no studies showing differences in nasal mucociliary transport behavior between male and female smokers. Objective: To compare the nasal mucociliary transportability in male and female smokers and non-smokers, taking into consideration age, anthropometric data, smoking load and pulmonary function. Methods: The analysis included 139 individuals (33 men and 37 women smokers and 32 men and 37 women non-smokers). All participants answered an initial interview to obtain personal data and smoking load. Anthropometric data and carbon monoxide in the exhaled air were assessed. Individuals also performed pulmonary function test and Saccharin Transit Time test. To compare saccharin transit time values between men and women, smokers and non-smokers, stratification of all independent variables was performed (sociodemographic, smoking and respiratory variables) into two categories: below and above the median values. Results: There was no difference between men and women, smokers and non-smokers, regarding nasal mucociliary transportability. Significant differences were only observed between non-smokers. RESUMO: Objetivo: A concomitância de fumo e maus hábitos alimentares representa uma piora no prognóstico da saúde e na qualidade de vida dos idosos. O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar o estado nutricional de idosos fumantes e ex-fumantes residentes na cidade de São Paulo. Métodos: Foi realizado um estudo transversal em 2010, com uma amostra representativa de 1.345 indivíduos com 60 anos ou mais, que fazem parte da coorte de idosos acompanhados pelo Estudo Saúde, Bem-Estar e Envelhecimento (SABE). Foram descritos os aspectos sociodemográficos, de saúde e nutricionais dos idosos de acordo com o uso de tabaco na vida. Resultados: A proporção de fumantes e ex-fumantes foi de, respectivamente, 12,9 e 54,7% para o sexo masculino; 11,0 e 25,2% para o sexo feminino; e de 11,8 e 37,2% para a população total do estudo. Para ambos os sexos, com o aumento da idade, diminuiu a proporção de fumantes. A proporção de idosas fumantes com ingestão adequada de frutas foi menor. Fumantes apresentaram pior estado nutricional, com menos refeições por dia e maior frequência de baixo peso. Conclusão: Considerando-se o impacto do hábito alimentar inadequado e de fumar sobre a saúde, os fumantes idosos merecem atenção especial sobre o seu estado nutricional. ABSTRACT: Objectives: The concomitance of smoking and poor dietary habits represents a worsened prognosis of health and quality of life for elderly. The aim of this study was to characterize the nutritional status of elderly who were smokers and former smokers and residents of São Paulo city. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2010 with a representative sample of 1,345 individuals aged 60 years and over, who were part of the elderly cohort monitored at the SABE Study. Sociodemographic, health, and nutritional aspects of the elderly were described, according to their tobacco use in life. Results: The proportion of smokers and former smokers was 12.9 and 54.7%, 11.0 and 25.2%, and 11.8 and 37.2% for male, female, and total population, respectively. For both genders, increasing age decreased the proportion of smokers. The proportion of proper fruit intake was smaller for female smokers. Poorer nutritional status was observed in smokers, who had fewer meals per day and greater frequency of underweight compared with elderly nonsmokers. Conclusion: Considering the impact of inappropriate eating habits and smoking on health, elderly smokers deserve special attention on their nutritional status.

Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of High Voltage Pulsed Current (HVPC) on the integration of total skin grafts in rats submitted to nicotine action. Materials and methods For this purpose, 60 adult Wistar rats randomly distributed in 6 groups of 10 animals were analyzed. The electrical stimulation (anodic and cathodic stimulation, motor level, 30 min at 10 Hz; minimum voltage 20 μs and 100 μs pulse interval) was applied for seven days, starting on the third day after surgery and after the dressing was removed from the graft. Results Anodic HVPC promoted greater graft integration, demonstrating a lower percentage of tissue contraction, a lower number of inflammatory infiltrates and a greater amount of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), as well as a higher number of newly formed blood vessels. Conclusions HVPC can positively influence the integration of skin grafts in nicotine-treated rats. anodic HVPC is shown to promote greater integration in relation to a lower percentage of tissue contraction, a lower number of inflammatory infiltrates and a greater amount of vascular endothelial growth factor and newformed blood vessels. Whereas, the cathodic polarity has presented smaller amount of tissue gap.

Background: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is defined as the death of cardiomyocytes due to prolonged ischemia, caused by thrombosis and / or vasospasm on an atherosclerotic plaque. Objective: To determine the incidence of patients with myocardial infarction undergoing primary angioplasty; characterize the anthropometric variables and identify the risk factors in this population. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational, retrospective study in which we collected secondary data from medical records of a hospital in a city in the state of São Paulo, where the largest number of interventions is via Public Health System, patients with a diagnosis of Myocardial Infarction, undergoing primary coronary angioplasty, from January 2011 to December 2013. Results: The total sample consisted of 437 subjects, 282 male and 155 female. In this study, there was predominance of myocardial infarction in the anterior descending artery ADA (45.51%), followed by right coronary artery RCA (38.46%), in carrying out the rescue angioplasty and stent implantation in 96.62% of cases. There was a predominance of high blood pressure as risk factors for 73.71%, followed by smoking with 41.66% of the sample. Conclusion: According to the present study data, it appears a higher prevalence of infarction occurred in the ADA, with individuals performing the rescue angioplasty procedure and the placement of the stent, and a growing incidence of drug stent placement. Resumo: Em Janeiro 2008, foi implementada, em Portugal, uma nova medida legislativa que condiciona o consumo de tabaco em espaços colectivos fechados. Como a exposição passiva ao fumo do tabaco provoca a exacerbação dos sintomas de asma, tornou-se pertinente conhecer a percepção dos doentes asmáticos sobre as repercussões desta nova lei no seu bem-estar.Foi realizado um estudo descritivo transversal, numa amostra de conveniência, constituída por 96 doentes asmáticos da consulta de Pneumologia do Hospital Pulido Valente e do Hospital de Santa Marta, de Lisboa. Os dados foram recolhidos a partir de um questionário padronizado com respostas voluntárias, anónimas e confidenciais. Para tratamento estatístico recorreu-se ao programa Epi InfoTM e foi aplicado o teste qui-quadrado para análise dos resultados (α=5%).Dos doentes inquiridos, a percentagem dos que estiveram expostos a fumo de tabaco até Dezembro 2007 foi de 67,7%, com maior prevalência no grupo de indivíduos activos. Apesar de a maioria dos inquiridos não referir alterações no seu bem-estar, 39,6% referiu alterações positivas (melhoria na realização de actividades diárias, diminuição dos sintomas ou menor necessidade de recorrer a medicação SOS). Destes indivíduos, que indicaram alterações positivas, 81,6% deixaram de estar expostos após entrada da nova lei e 65,8% indicaram-na como factor responsável.Os resultados deste estudo, apenas dois meses após a implementação legal, reforçam a importância da aplicação de medidas legais eficazes que evitem a exposição ao fumo de tabaco, como forma de redução da exacerbação dos sintomas e de melhoria do bem-estar dos doentes asmáticos.Rev Port Pneumol 2009; XV (1): 27-42 Abstract: January 2008 saw new legislation implanted in Portugal restricting smoking in closed public spaces. As second-hand smoke worsens asthma symptoms, it is important to understand how asthma patients feel this new legislation impacts on their well-being.A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a convenience sample formed of 96 asthma patients who had Pulmonology appointments at the Pulido Valente and Santa Marta Hospitals. All data was collected from a standardised questionnaire with volunteer, anonymous and confidential answers. Epi InfoTM software was used for statistical processing purposes, and the results analysed using the chi-squared test (α=5%).67.7% of the patients polled were exposed to second-hand smoke until December 2007, with a higher percentage in those currently in work. A considerable percentage (39.6%) described positive changes (measured by improved performance of daily life activities, decrease in symptoms or lesser recourse to SOS medication), even though the majority did not recognise any improvement. 81.6% of those who noted positive changes said they were no longer exposed to second-hand smoke with the passing of the new legislation, and 65.8% stated that the smoking ban was the factor responsible for those changes.These results, only two months after the implementation of the legislative ban on smoking in public spaces, underline the importance of approving effective measures to create and enforce smoke-free environments, reducing worsening of symptoms and improving asthma patientsâ well-being.Rev Port Pneumol 2009; XV (1): 27-42 Palavras-chave: Asma, tabaco, exposição, fumo, fumo passivo, lei, Key-words: Asthma, tobacco, exposure, smoke, second-hand smoke, legislation

Este estudo teve por objetivo analisar fatores que contribuem para o sucesso no abandono do tabagismo. Estudo qualitativo, no qual foram entrevistados 16 indivíduos de Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil, que pararam de fumar há mais de seis meses, com pontuação ≥5 pela escala de Fagerström. As informações foram examinadas através da Análise de Conteúdo, por meio das etapas de pré-análise, exploração do material e tratamento dos resultados. O abandono do tabagismo resultou de um conjunto de fatores, sendo foco deste artigo a determinação (querer parar e dificuldade de parar de fumar) e o apoio recebido (profissional, familiar, social e espiritual). Os resultados sugerem que a determinação do fumante de querer parar de fumar, aliada ao apoio de segmentos da sociedade são fatores que auxiliam de forma significativa o processo de abandono do tabagismo. This study aimed to analyze determination and support as successful factors for smoking cessation. Qualitative study in which 16 individuals from Porto Alegre, Brazil, who had ceased smoking for more than six months, with score ≥5 according to Fagerström scale, were interviewed. Information was examined through Content Analysis according to the following steps: pre-analysis, material investigation and result treatment. Smoking cessation was a consequence of a group of factors, with determination (the will to cease smoking and the difficulty to cease smoking) and the received support (occupational; family; social, and spiritual, and through a specific course and support groups) as the focus of this article. The results suggest that the smoker’s determination to cease smoking together with the support of society segments and the benefits from that are helpful factors in the smoking cessation process. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar los factores que contribuyen para obtener éxito en abandonar el tabaquismo. Es un estudio cualitativo, en el cual fueron entrevistados 16 individuos de Porto Alegre, en Brasil, que dejaron de fumar hace más de seis meses, con puntuación ≥5 de la escala de Fagerström. Las informaciones fueron examinadas por un Análisis de Contenido, por medio de las etapas de análisis, examen del material y tratamiento de los resultados. El abandono del tabaquismo es el resultado de un conjunto de factores, siendo el foco de este artículo la determinación (querer parar y la dificultad de parar de fumar) y el apoyo recibido (profesional, familiar, social y espiritual). Los resultados sugieren que la determinación del fumador de querer parar de fumar, aliada al apoyo de segmentos de la sociedad son factores que ayudan de forma significativa para el proceso de abandono del tabaquismo.

Epidemiology is the study of health and disease in populations, and of how these conditions are influenced by heredity, biology, physical environment, social environment, and personal behavior. There are many epidemiological studies in Brazilian population but few about the influence of some risk factors in periodontal conditions. This cross-sectional study was performed to assess the influence of age, sex, plaque and smoking on periodontal disease in a population from Bauru (Brazil). Data concerning periodontal status were collected from 380 patients in the University of São Paulo (USP). Measurements of periodontal pocket depths (PPD), clinical attachment levels (CAL), plaque index (PI) of four sites in all teeth were registered. The influence of age, sex and smoking habits on the periodontal parameters were statistically evaluated using descriptive statistical and ANOVA. The correlation between plaque and periodontal parameters was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results showed an increase in the mean of periodontal destruction (PPD and CAL) and a higher number of sites with severe losses with increasing age. Correlation among percentage of sites with plaque and periodontal parameters (PPD and CAL) were positive but weakly related. The male group showed significantly higher means of CAL than the female. Smokers had significantly higher PPD and CAL means than non-smokers. Aging, smoking habit, male sex, and percentage of sites with plaque were associated with a great increase of periodontal destruction, being important factors in the diagnosis of the periodontal disease in this Brazilian population. A Epidemiologia é o estudo da saúde e da doença nas populações e de como esses estados são influenciados pela hereditariedade, biologia, ambiente físico e social e comportamento pessoal. Existem vários estudos epidemiológicos na população brasileira porém poucos sobre a influência de fatores de risco nas condições periodontais. Este estudo transversal objetivou avaliar a influência da idade, sexo, placa bacteriana e fumo na doença periodontal em uma amostra da cidade de Bauru. Os dados sobre as condições periodontais foram obtidos de 380 pacientes da Universidade de São Paulo, sendo registradas medidas de profundidade de sondagem, nível de inserção clínica e índice de placa de 4 sítios de todos os dentes. A influência da idade, sexo e fumo foram avaliadas utilizando-se a Estatística descritiva e a Análise de Variância (ANOVA) e o papel da placa bacteriana, por meio do coeficiente de correlação de Pearson. Os resultados mostraram um aumento nas médias de profundidade de sondagem e nível de inserção e um maior número de sítios com perdas severas com o avanço da idade. A correlação entre a porcentagem de sítios com placa e os parâmetros periodontais foi positiva porém fraca. O sexo masculino apresentou médias significantemente maiores de nível de inserção do que o sexo feminino. Os fumantes obtiveram médias significantemente maiores de profundidade de sondagem e de nível de inserção quando comparados aos não-fumantes. A idade, hábito de fumar, sexo masculino e porcentagem de sítios com placa estão associados a maior destruição periodontal, sendo fatores importantes no diagnóstico da doença periodontal nessa população brasileira.

A citopatologia bucal é um método de diagnóstico baseado em células obtidas por raspagem. Com a finalidade de constatar quantitativamente as alterações celulares ocasionadas pelo fumo em mucosa bucal normal, durante a Campanha de Combate ao Câncer de Novo Hamburgo/RS de 2000, foram selecionados todos os indivíduos homens, fumantes e não-fumantes, acima de 40 anos e sem lesão bucal aparente. O processo de seleção resultou em um total de 13 fumantes e 9 não-fumantes. Os sítios bucais estudados foram: lábio, soalho bucal e língua. De cada sítio estudado foram obtidos dois esfregaços, sendo o primeiro submetido à técnica de impregnação pela prata (AgNORs) para avaliação quantitativa via IMAGELAB e o segundo ao método de Papanicolaou Modificado para confirmação de normalidade. Através do teste estatístico Mann-Whitney (p =0,05) foram obtidos os seguintes resultados: (1) em soalho, o numero de AgNORs por núcleo foi superior em fumantes comparado ao grupo não-fumantes; (2) em língua, a relação núcleo/citoplasma em fumantes é maior em comparação aos não-fumantes; (3) em lábio, o grupo com média acima de 3 AgNORs/núcleo apresentou área nuclear maior. Considerando que cada sítio possui comportamento específico frente às injúrias ocasionadas pelo fumo, concluímos que as referências quantitativas de relação núcleo/citoplasma e número de AgNORs/núcleos são eficazes para o controle de alterações celulares prévias à lesão bucal visível.

Com o objetivo de avaliar a prevalência de tabagismo em Porto Alegre, RS, Brasil, e os fatores associados, executou-se estudo observacional, de delineamento transversal e base populacional. Através de amostragem aleatória proporcional, por estágios múltiplos e conglomerados, selecionaram-se 1.091 indivíduos, a partir de 18 anos, que responderam a um questionário, em entrevista domiciliar. Aferiu-se o hábito de fumar através de perguntas dirigidas ao tipo de fumo, freqüência e tempo de exposição. A prevalência foi de 34,9% (IC 31,9 - 37,8), sendo de 41,5% (IC 38,5 - 44,4) entre os homens e 29,5% (IC 26,8 - 32,2) entre as mulheres. O início foi, em média, aos 16 (±5,6) e 17,8 (±6,7) anos, com moda de 15 e 14 anos, respectivamente. Os homens fumavam 19,0 ± 14,0 cigarros por dia e as mulheres 14,5 ± 10,3. Analisaram-se as associações através de regressão logística, incluindo-se no modelo sexo, idade, educação, renda, qualificação profissional e consumo de álcool. O hábito de fumar foi mais freqüente entre os homens, indivíduos de menor nível socioeconômico, dos 30 aos 39 anos, e entre os usuários de bebidas alcoólicas. Conclui-se que o tabagismo é freqüente em Porto Alegre, constituindo-se problema de saúde pública similar ao referido pela literatura. O consumo de álcool deve estar associado ao fumo por serem ambos comportamentos de risco, com determinantes comuns. A cross-sectional study was carried out for the purpose of evaluating, the prevalence of smoking and the factors associated with it in Porto Alegre, a city in southern Brazilian. Through proportional, multiple stage, random sampling, 1.091 individuals (92% of those eligible) of 18 or more years of age, were interviewed at home. Exposure to smoking was measured by a questionnaire that inquired about the type, quantity and frequency of tobacco use. The prevalence of smoking was 34.9% (Cl 31.9 - 37.8). It was higher -among men - 41.5% (Cl 38.5 - 44.4) then women - 29.5% (Cl 26.8 - 32.2). The former started smoking at mean age of 16 (± 5.6), with mode of 15 and smoked an average of 19.0 (± 14.0) cigarettes per day. Females started at a mean age of 17.8 (± 6.7), with mode of 14 years old and smoked 14.5 (± 10.3). The association of the drinking habit and demographic and socioeconomic variables with smoking was evaluated through logistic regression. The variables included in the model were sex, age, education, income, professional qualification and alcohol consumption. The prevalence of smoking was greater for men, individuals of lower sociecinomic level, between 30 and 39 years of age, and among those accustomed to consuming alcoholic beverages. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that smoking is a public health problem in Brazil as in another countries. It is associated with sex, age, education and professional qualification, as has been observed elsewhere. The association of alcohol consumption with smoking may be understood as risk behavior, both having similar determinants.

The study, part of the project "Atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, lipemic disorders, hypertension, obesity and diabetis mellitus in a population of the metropolitan area of the southeastern region of Brazil", had the following objectives: a) the characterization and distribution among typical human socio-economic groupings, of the prevalence of some particular habits which constitute aspects of life-style-the use of tobacco, the use of alcohol and sedentary activity; b) the establishment of the interrelation between the above-mentioned habits and some lipemic disorders. The prevalence of the habits cited behaved in the following manner: the use of tobacco predominated among men, distributed uniformly throughout the social strata; among the women the average percentage of smokers was 18,9%, a significant difference occurring among the highest socio-economic class, where the average was of 40.2%. The sedentary style of life presented high prevalence, among both men and women with exception of the women of the highest socio-economic level and of the skilled working class. The use of alcohol, as one would expect, is a habit basically practised by the men, without any statistically significant differences between classes. For the purpose of establishing associations between these risk fictors and lipemic conditions four situations were chosen, of the following characteristics: 1- total cholesterol > or = 220 mg/dl and triglycerides > or = 150 mg/dl; 2- HDL cholesterol or = 150 mg/dl; 3- HDL cholesterol or = 150 mg/dl, and the following independent variables: age, use of tobacco and the interactions between obesity and smoking, age and sedentary lifestyle, sex and obesity (R2=22%); the standardized B coefficient showed that the variables with the greatest weight in the forecasting of the variation in the levels of cholesterol were smoking and the interaction between obesity and smoking. The hypercholesterolemia accompanied by triglycerides levels or = 150 mg/dl was inversely associated with obesity and the interaction smoking/ age and directly with age (R=31%). The standardized B coeffients, indicated that the variables obesity and the interactions smoking/age possessed a weight three times greater than age alone in accounting for the variation in the serum levels of HDL cholesterol. When accompanied by triglycerides ou = 150mg/dl, com as seguintes variáveis independentes: idade, tabagismo e as interações entre obesidade/tabagismo, sedentarismo e sexo/obesidade, com R² igual 22%; as variáveis de maior peso na predição da variação dos níveis de colesterol total foram o tabagismo e a interação entre obesidade/tabagismo. A hipercolesterolemia acompanhada de níveis de triglicérides menores do que 150mg/dl associou-se às seguintes variáveis: sexo, interações obesidade/tabagismo e sexo/obesidade. Para a situação 2- o HDL colesterol, acompanhado de níveis de triglicérides > ou = 150mg/dl, associou-se inversamente às variáveis obesidade e a interação tabagismo/ idade e diretamente à idade (R²=31%); as variáveis obesidade e a interação tabagismo/idade apresentaram peso três vezes maior do que a idade na explicação da variação dos níveis séricos do HDL colesterol. Na presença de níveis séricos de triglicérides menores do que 150mg/dl não houve qualquer associação com as variáveis aludidas e o conjunto apresentou R² igual a 22%. Fica evidente, que as associações inversas entre HDL-colesterol com o tabagismo e obesidade, já descritas na literatura, só ocorreram na presença de níveis de triglicérides > ou = 150mg/dl. Constata-se que na presença de baixos níveis de triglicérides diminui o número de variáveis preditivas da hipercolesterolemia. Em síntese, na população abordada, os hábitos componentes do estilo de vida (tabagismo, etilismo e sedentarismo), que se constituem em fatores de risco de morbidades determinantes das doenças cardiovasculares ateroscleróticas, encontram-se distribuídos em todos os grupamentos sociais típicos nesta determinada forma de organização social. Por outro lado, as sete variáveis independentes utilizadas nos modelos de regressão múltipla apresentaram coeficientes de determinação múltipla, que variaram entre 20 e 30% aproximadamente. Ressalta-se, desta forma, a importância da epidemiologia genética no estudo das morbidades em questão.

It is speculated that M do not benefit from the oral hygiene routine as well as non-molars (NM) do. This study evaluated the response of M and NM to supragingival control during a 6-month period in 25 smokers (S) and 25 never-smokers (NS) with moderate-to-severe periodontitis. One calibrated examiner assessed visible plaque (VPI) and gingival bleeding (GBI) indexes, periodontal probing depth (PPD), bleeding on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) at days 0 (baseline), 30 and 180. At baseline, M showed significantly higher mean values of VPI (p = 0.017) and PPD (p < 0.001) compared with NM; CAL was also greater in M (p < 0.001) and was affected by smoking (p = 0.007). The reductions obtained for periodontal indicators at day 180 showed similar responses between M and NM. For CAL, M (NS 0.57 ± 0.50; S 0.67 ± 0.64) and NM (NS 0.38 ± 0.23; S 0.50 ± 0.33) reached an almost significant difference (p = 0.05). Smoking did not influence the response to treatment. Multilevel analysis revealed that, only for PDD reductions, the interaction between sites, teeth and patient was significant (p < 0.001). It was concluded that M benefit from an adequate regimen of supragingival biofilm control; therefore, supragingival condition should be considered in the prognosis of molar teeth. RESUMO Estudou-se a ação de diferentes inseticidas sobre populações do pulgão, Myzus persicae, em lavouras de fumo da Agro Comercial Fumageira S. A., var. Sumatra, no Município de Cruz das Almas - BA. Foram realizados dois ensaios, um em dezembro de 1991 e o outro em fevereiro de 1992, e nas duas oportunidades mostraram-se eficientes os inseticidas Acefate 750 PS, Pirimicarb 500 PM e Metamidofos 600 CE. SUMMARY The effect of different inseticides on the aphid Myzus persicae was tested. Tobbaco variety Sumatra was cultivated at "Agro Comercial Fumageira SA." near Cruz das Almas BA. The experiment was realized in December (1991) and February (1992). The inseticides Acefate 750 SP, Pirimicarb 500 WP and Metamidofos 600 CE were more efficient in both times.

O estudo avalia a associação entre o consumo de tabaco, bebidas alcoólicas e drogas ilícitas e os fatores de proteção familiar. Foram analisados dados referentes da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde do Escolar (PeNSE), em uma amostra de 60.973 escolares do nono ano do Ensino Fundamental de escolas públicas e privadas das 26 capitais dos estados brasileiros e Distrito Federal. A maioria dos adolescentes vive com o pai e a mãe e cerca de um terço reside em lares apenas com a presença da mãe. Metade dos pais ou responsáveis sabe o que os adolescentes fazem no tempo livre. Residir com ambos os pais tem efeito protetor nos hábitos de fumar, beber e usar drogas. Além disto, a supervisão familiar também é importante na prevenção destes hábitos. Práticas como fazer pelo menos uma refeição com pais ou responsáveis, na maioria dos dias da semana, e o fato de os pais ou responsáveis saberem o que os adolescentes fazem no tempo livre nos últimos 30 dias tem efeito protetor. Os alunos que faltam às aulas sem avisar aos pais têm maior chance de fumar, beber e experimentar drogas. O papel da família é essencial na prevenção de riscos, tais como: tabaco, álcool e drogas e na promoção à saúde dos adolescentes. This study evaluates the relation between the use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages and illicit drugs and family protective factors. Data from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE) were analyzed in a sample of 60,973 students at the freshman year of high school, from public and private schools of Brazilian state capitals. Most adolescents lived with both their parents and about a third lived in households only with their mothers. Half the parents or responsible parties are aware of what adolescents do in their free time. Living with both parents is a protective factor for smoking, drinking, and drug use. Family supervision is also important for the prevention of such behavior. Sharing a meal with parents or responsible parties most days of the week and the fact that the parents know what the adolescents have done in their free time in the past 30 days are also protective factors. Students that miss classes without telling their parents have higher chances of using tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. The family plays an essential role to prevent tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, and to promote health among teenagers.

Background A higher burden of head and neck cancer has been reported to affect deprived populations. This study assessed the association between socioeconomic status and head and neck cancer, aiming to explore how this association is related to differences of tobacco and alcohol consumption across socioeconomic strata. Methods We conducted a case-control study in Sao Paulo, Brazil (1998–2006), including 1017 incident cases of oral, pharyngeal and laryngeal cancer, and 951 sex- and age-matched controls. Education and occupation were distal determinants in the hierarchical approach; cumulative exposure to tobacco and alcohol were proximal risk factors. Outcomes of the hierarchical model were compared with fully adjusted ORs. Results Individuals with lower education (OR 2.27; 95% CI 1.61 to 3.19) and those performing manual labour (OR 1.55; 95% CI 1.26 to 1.92) had a higher risk of disease. However, 54% of the association with lower education and 45% of the association with manual labour were explained by proximal lifestyle exposures, and socioeconomic status remained significantly associated with disease when adjusted for smoking and alcohol consumption. Conclusions Socioeconomic differences in head and neck cancer are partially attributable to the distribution of tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption across socioeconomic strata. Additional mediating factors may explain the remaining variation of socioeconomic status on head and neck cancer.

The association of cigarette smoking, physical activity at work, and social class with total cholesterol and with high and low density lipoprotein cholesterol were examined in a random sample of 238 males, of 18 years of age, of Rosario, Argerntina. The mean (mg/dl) total serum cholesterol of the whole sample was 174.7, the high density lipoprotein cholesterol 52.8, and the low density lipoprotein cholesterol 121.5. Black tobacco consumers, evenly distributed by social class, had higher levels of total and low density lipoprotein cholesterol. Total cholesterol was higher in the high social class, differently from what smokers' distribution by social class, would lead one to expect. While a highly negative association was found between social class and physical activity at work, there were no significant diferences in lipoprotein levels between manual and non-manual workers. It is possible that the nutritional differences by social class still prevail over the smoking habit in their influence on the lipoprotein levels in these subjects.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate commonality of risk factor profiles of women who develop gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. METHODS: Prospective cohort study in prenatal clinics of the Brazilian Unified Health System in six state capitals. 4.766 pregnant women between 20 to 48 years old were consecutively enrolled between 20th and 28th gestational weeks. Smoking habits and traditional risk factors for pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes were obtained by the interview at enrollment. Gestational diabetes was diagnosed using a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test and pre-eclampsia through chart review. RESULTS: Both gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia were associated with age (OR 2.07; 95% CI 1.65-2.23 and OR 1.55; 95% CI 1.08-2.23, respectively), pre-pregnancy body mass index (OR 1.62; 95% CI 1.40-3.53 and OR 1.83; 95% CI 1.52-4.80, respectively) and weight gain in early pregnancy (OR 1.28; 95% CI 1.12-1.47 and OR 1.27; 95% CI 1.06-1.52, respectively). Lower odds of gestational diabetes (OR 0.31; 95% CI 0.22-0.44) and pre-eclampsia (OR 0.36; 95% CI 0.20-0.51) were observed in nulliparous women who have smoked during pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia share a pattern of risk factors, suggesting the possibility of common aetiology. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a concordância do padrão de fatores de risco de mulheres que desenvolvem diabetes gestacional e pré-eclâmpsia. MÉTODOS: Estudo de coorte prospectivo em clínicas de atendimento pré-natal do Sistema Único de Saúde de seis capitais do Brasil, 4.766 mulheres grávidas de 20 a 48 anos de idade foram arroladas de maneira consecutiva entre a 20º e 28º semanas de gestação. O hábito de fumar e os fatores de risco tradicionais para pré-eclâmpsia e diabetes gestacional foram obtidos por entrevista no arrolamento. Diabetes gestacional foi diagnosticada usando um teste oral de tolerância a glicose com 75 g e pré-eclâmpsia por meio de revisão de prontuário. RESULTADOS: Diabetes gestacional e pré-eclâmpsia são associadas com idade (RC 2,07; 95% IC 1,65-2,23 e RC 1,55; 95% IC 1,08-2,23, respectivamente), índice de massa corporal pré-gestacional (RC 1,62; 95% IC 1,40-3,53 e RC 1,83; 95% IC 1,52-4,80, respectivamente) e ganho de peso precocemente durante a gestação (RC 1,28; 95% IC 1,12-1,47 e RC 1,27; 95% IC 1,06-1,52, respectivamente). Menor chance de diabetes gestacional (RC 0,31; 95% IC 0,22-0,44) e pré-eclâmpsia (RC 0,36; 95% IC 0,20-0,51) foram observados em mulheres nulíparas que fumaram durante a gestação. CONCLUSÃO: Diabetes gestacional e pré-eclâmpsia compartilham um padrão de fatores de risco, sugerindo a possibilidade de uma etiologia comum.

CONTEXT: Epidemiological studies of the validity and reliability of self-reported information on important risk factors for non-communicable chronic diseases are scarce in Brazil. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the test-retest reliability of information overall and stratified by gender, age and education on active and passive smoking, alcohol intake and aspects of dietary habits. TYPE OF STUDY: Test-retest reliability. SETTING: Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: 192 University employees. PROCEDURES: Self-administered questionnaires were completed on two occasions, two weeks apart. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Kappa Statistics; Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. RESULTS: Information on smoking status and pack-years smoked had almost perfect levels of agreement, respectively, kappa = 0.97 (95% CI, 0.92-1.00), and intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.93 (CI 95%, 0.89-0.96). Characteristics of alcohol intake yielded substantial levels of agreement (kappa ranging from 0.62 to 0.69). The reproducibility of the information on dietary habits varied from 0.67 to 0.79 (kappa). No clear-cut patterns could be identified comparing information by age or gender. There was a slight tendency towards greater reliability among people with higher levels of education. CONCLUSION: The reproducibility of information on smoking, drinking, and dietary patterns ranged from substantial to excellent, as investigated in the Pró-Saúde Study, a longitudinal investigation recently launched in Rio de Janeiro. CONTEXTO: Estudos epidemiológicos sobre a validade e confiabilidade de informações auto-referidas sobre fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não-transmissíveis são escassos no Brasil. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a confiabilidade teste-reteste da informação ¾ total e estratificada por gênero, idade e educação ¾ sobre fumo ativo e passivo, consumo de álcool e aspectos de hábitos dietéticos. TIPO DE ESTUDO: Confiabilidade teste-reteste. LOCAL: Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. PARTICIPANTES: 192 funcionários técnico-administrativos. PROCEDIMENTOS: Questionários auto-administrados foram completados em duas ocasiões, com duas semanas de intervalo. ANÁLISE ESTATÍSTICA: Estatística Kappa; Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse. RESULTADOS: Estatística. As informações sobre o hábito de fumar cigarros e a quantidade de cigarros (maços-ano) apresentaram níveis quase perfeitos de concordância, respectivamente, kappa = 0,97 (IC 95%, 0,92 1,00); coeficiente de correlação intraclasse = 0,93 (IC 95%, 0,89 0,96). Características de consumo de álcool apresentaram níveis substanciais de concordância (kappa variando entre 0,62 e 0,69). A confiabilidade da informação sobre hábitos dietéticos variou entre 0,67 e 0,69 (kappa). Nenhum padrão definido pode ser identificado comparando a informação segundo idade ou gênero. Houve uma leve tendência à maior confiabilidade entre pessoas com maiores níveis de escolaridade. CONCLUSÃO: A confiabilidade das informações sobre o hábito de fumar, consumo de bebidas alcoólicas e padrões de dieta variou entre muito boa a excelente, de acordo com a investigação realizada no Estudo Pró-Saúde, investigação longitudinal, recentemente iniciada no Rio de Janeiro.

O papilomavírus humano (HPV) exerce um papel central na carcinogênese do colo uterino. Em torno a ele orbitam outros fatores que influenciam direta ou indiretamente a instalação deste mecanismo no epitélio escamoso cervical. Investigações a respeito dos mecanismos de atuação e interação desses co-fatores com os elementos virais encontram-se na literatura dos últimos 20 anos. O presente artigo de revisão explora os possíveis co-fatores do HPV na gênese do carcinoma escamoso do colo uterino, levando em conta apenas os fatores cuja associação com o vírus ou câncer cervical tenha sido documentada experimentalmente, e não apenas clínica ou epidemiologicamente. Dentre os parâmetros abordados estão os fatores imunológicos (resposta imune local e humoral), a associação com a Síndrome da Imunodeficiência Adquirida Humana, fatores genéticos como o polimorfismo da proteína p53, o tabagismo e o uso de contraceptivos orais. Todos estes fatores interagem em menor ou maior intensidade com oncoproteínas e outros elementos do HPV, potencializando a ação do vírus na célula hospedeira e facilitando o desenvolvimento dos processos de imortalização e carcinogênese. Human papillomavirus (HPV) plays a central rule in uterine cervix carcinogenesis. Other factors direct or indirectly influence the installation of this mechanism in cervical squamous epithelium. Investigations regarding mechanisms of interaction of these factors with viral elements are found in the literature of the last 20 years. The present review article discusses possible co-factors of HPV in the genesis of the squamous carcinoma of uterine cervix, taking into account only the factors whose association with the virus or cervical cancer has been documented by experimental studies, and not based just on clinical or epidemiological data. Among the approached parameters are immunological factors (local and humoral immune response), the association with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, genetic factors as protein p53 polymorphism, tabagism and the use of oral contraceptives. All these factors interact in variable intensity with oncoproteins and other HPV elements, increasing and facilitating the virus action in host cells, leading to the development of immortalization and carcinogenesis.

Micronúcleos são fragmentos de DNA não incorporados ao núcleo na divisão celular e que apresentam relação com agentes genotóxicos (mutagênicos ou clastogênicos). Os micronúcleos podem ser detectados nas células esfoliadas dos tecidos. OBJETIVO: Determinar a freqüência de micronúcleos na mucosa esofágica, relacionando com determinados hábitos. PACIENTES E MÉTODOS: Em pacientes submetidos à endoscopia digestiva alta e sem evidências de anormalidades esofágicas, foram colhidos materiais através de escovado do esôfago médio, para pesquisa de micronúcleos. Após à endoscopia, os pacientes foram questionados sobre seus hábitos. RESULTADOS: A freqüência de micronúcleos não mostrou diferenças significativas (p > 0,05) em relação ao sexo, local de residência (rural ou urbana), tipo de atendimento (ambulatorial ou hospitalizado), ingestão de álcool. Nas variáveis fumo e mate houve diferenças significativas entre as categorias expostos e ex-expostos em relação à categoria nunca expostos. CONCLUSÃO: A freqüência de micronúcleos na mucosa esofágica foi maior nos pacientes fumantes e bebedores de mate. PURPOSE: To demonstrate the frequency of micronucleus in esophageal mucous cells of smokers, consumers of alcoholic beverages and "maté" drinkers. METHODS: Material collected from the midlle esophagus in 250 consecutive patients submitted to upper digestive endoscopy was stained with acridine orange and the cytologist determined the number of micronuclei vizualized per each 500 cells examined. RESULTS: The frequency of micronucleated cells did not vary significantly (p > 0.05) when the following variables were considered: sex, place of residence (rural or urban), type of care (outpatient or inpatient), ingestion of alcohol. For two variables, smoking and "maté" consumption, there were significant differences in the frequency of micronuclei in the categories exposed and formerly exposed in relation to never exposed. CONCLUSION: A higher frequency of micronucleus in the esophageal mucous in smoking and "maté" drinkers was evidenced by this study.

Las altas tasas de incidencia y mortalidad por cáncer de pulmón en hombres en Rosario, Argentina motivaron o estudio de 211 pacientes varones. Se comparon las edades al diagnóstico entre los tipos histológicos y ocupaciones, y edad de iniciación, duración e intensidad del hábito de fumar. Foi realizado estudo transversal de prevalência da hipertensão arterial da população de 15-74 anos de idade, residente na zona urbana do Município de Araraquara, localidade situada a 250 km da cidade de São Paulo, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil, em 1987. Na ocasião foram perguntadas aos 1.199 entrevistados (533 do sexo masculino e 666 do sexo feminino) questões sobre o uso de tabaco (fumo), a forma de uso, o hábito de tragar, bem como variáveis sociodemográficas. A amostra foi equiprobabilística, por conglomerados, em três estágios. A prevalência de tabagismo foi bastante alta, de 45,2% entre os homens e 22,8% entre as mulheres. Os ex-fumantes eram em percentagem de 15,9% entre os homens e 8,0% das mulheres. O sexo masculino fumava maior quantidade de equivalentes de cigarro do que o feminino. As camadas de mais baixa renda familiar fumavam mais, em ambos os sexos, do que os estratos de renda mais alta. Entre os homens, a prevalência de tabagismo diminuía com a maior escolaridade e nas mulheres, este aspecto não foi notado. Comparando com os resultados já publicados sobre a alta prevalência de hipertensão arterial e de obesidade, nota-se que a população de Araraquara, cidade média do interior urbano afluente do Brasil, apresenta uma freqüência bastante alta de fatores de risco para doenças crônicas não-transmissíveis. A cross-sectional study for prevalence of arterial hipertension in the population aged 15-74 years of age of the urban area of Araraquara County, 250 km from the city of S. Paulo, S. Paulo, State, Brazil, in 1987, was performed. The questionnaires presented to 1,199 people (533 men and 666 women) at the interview consisted of regarding sociodemographic variables, as well as the use of tobacco (smoking), the ways in which tobacco was used and the habit of inhaling the smoke. The sample was taken by the procedure of clustering, carried out in three stages. The sample was equiprobabilistic. The prevalence of tobacco smoking was very high being of 45.2% for men and 22.8% for women. The ex-smokers accounted for 15.9% of men and 8.0% of women. The men somked much more than the women. The poorer smoked more than the richer, in both sexes. Among men, the prevalence of smoking was inversely proportional to duration of schooling, but that difference was not noted in women. As there have been other studies regarding the high prevalence of obesity and high blood pressure, it was conluded therefore that the population of Araraquara, an average town of the affluent urban interior of S. Paulo State, has a high frequency of risk factors for chronic non-transmissible diseases.

Foi realizado inquérito em Ribeirão Preto, Brasil, de junho de 1978 a maio de 1979, que constou de entrevistas com mães de nascidos vivos hospitalares, de partos únicos, correspondendo a 98 % dos nascimentos ocorridos durante o período no Município. O maior percentual de nascimentos com baixo peso ocorreu entre as mães jovens, fumantes e pertencentes às classes trabalhadoras. O maior número de mães jovens foi encontrado também nessas classes. A prevalência do hábito de fumar foi maior nas mães jovens, porém houve pouca diferença na freqüência de mulheres fumantes entre as classes sociais, variando de 25 a 30%. Observou-se que o pencentual de baixo peso foi maior para as mães trabalhadoras não fumantes do que para as mães burguesas fumantes. O modelo logito foi ajustado aos dados para estudo da possível associação múltipla entre hábito de fumar, idade materna e classe social com o peso ao nascer. Os resultados indicaram que hábito de fumar materno, idade materna e classe social foram independentes no seu efeito sobre o peso ao nascer, não se observando interação. Esses achados sugerem que a maior prevalência de baixo peso entre mães não fumantes das classes trabalhadoras em relação às mães fumantes da burguesia provavelmente refletiu a concentração de outros fatores de risco entre as mulheres das classes trabalhadoras, tais como: baixa escolaridade, cuidado pré-natal inadequado, alta paridade, diferenças no comportamento reprodutivo. An epidemiological survey was carried out in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, from June 1978 to May 1979. Interviews were held with mother of singleton live borne children, delivered in hospitals, which accounted for 98% of all births in the area. The higher percentages of low birthweight children related to the offspring of smokers, young mother and women belonging to the working class. The majority of young women were found in the working class and the prevalence of smoking was higher in the group of women below 20 years of age. There was no statistical difference in the smoking habit as between different social classes. A larger number of low birthweight children were observed in nonsmoking women of the working class than among women smokers of the middle class. A log model was adjusted to the data in order to study the possible multiple association of smoking, maternal age and social class with birthweight. The results indicated that maternal smoking, maternal age and social class had independent effects on birthweight. The was no interaction between them. These findings suggest that the higher prevalence of low birthweight in nonsmoking mothers of the working class in relation to smoking mothers of the middle class probably reflects clustering of other risk factors-such as poor education inadequate prenatal care, high parity and differences in reproductive behavior in women of the working class.

Em uma amostra de 1.441 alunos, representativa de estudantes de primeiro e segundo graus da rede privada do Distrito Federal (Brasil), foi realizado, em 1988, pesquisa com o objetivo de determinar a prevalência de consumo de álcool, fumo e drogas. Como instrumento de coleta de dados utilizou-se questionário adotado pela OMS, modificado. As prevalências do uso de substâncias psicoativas na vida (incluindo desde a experimentação até o uso diário) mostraram taxas de 67,2% para o álcool, 28,7% para o fumo, 13,9% para os inalantes, 6,1% para a maconha e 1,8% para a cocaína. O consumo da maioria das drogas mostrou-se crescente com a idade. Em relação ao sexo, as drogas ilícitas foram mais freqüentemente utilizadas pelos homens. A study was carried out in 1988, using a random sample of 1,441 pupils attending the elementary and high schools of the Federal District, Brazil, with the purpose of determining the frequency of the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. A self-administered questionnaire, adapted by the World Health Organization for this type of survey, was applied. The prevalence of general usage (covering everything from experimental to daily use) showed rates of 67.2% for alcohol, 28.7% for tobacco, 13.9% for inhalants, 6.1% for marijuana and 1.8% for cocaine. The use of the majority of drugs increases with age. As regards sex, the illegal drugs were mostly frequently used by boys.

Estudou-se o possível sinergismo dos fatores alcoolismo e tabagismo na tuberculose pulmonar, a partir de dados de um estudo caso-controle onde 854 pessoas foram entrevistadas (sendo 427 casos-pacientes portadores de tuberculose pulmonar e 427 controles) e questionadas quanto ao hábito de ingestão alcoólica e o de fumar em períodos precedendo ao diagnóstico da doença. Concluiu-se que existe pequena interação destes fatores na tuberculose pulmonar; o hábito de fumar estaria relacionado com a doença tuberculose através de sua associação com a ingestão de bebidas alcoólicas. A case-control study was made of the possible synergetic effect of smoking and alcohol drinking on pulmonary tuberculosis. Analysis of the results of 854 interviews showed that there is little interactive effect in the multiplicative sense (synergism) between these factors and pulmonary tuberculosis. It is suggested that the habit of smoking may be related to pulmonary tuberculosis only through its association with that of alcohol drinking.

Objective: This research aims to establish the prevalence, factors associated with the onset, and clinical and histopathological features of oral leukoplakia and erythroplakia, so that these data can contribute to the prevention of these lesions and, consequently, of oral cancer. Material and method: A retrospective study was conducted at a reference service of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) from 2000 to 2012. To verify the association of variables, Pearson's chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test (p ≤ 0.05) were used. Results: Among 6,560 investigated records, 54 cases were selected, of which 44.4% were male and 55.6% female, with mean age of 56.93 years. Regarding habits, 72.2% were smokers and 25% were alcohol users; 17.9% showed association of both habits. Oral leukoplakia lesions were the most prevalent (0.65%) and oral erythroplakia showed greater association with malignancy in the histopathological presentation (p = 0.001). Most lesions showed no symptoms (p = 0.004). The most frequent was oral leukoplakia in smoking women, with mean age of 57 years. Conclusion: Knowledge of associated factors and clinical characteristics of oral leukoplakia and erythroplakia is essential for establishing the correct diagnosis and treatment. Objetivo: Esta pesquisa objetiva estabelecer a prevalência, os fatores associados ao surgimento e as características clínicas e histopatológicas das leucoplasias e eritroplasias orais, a fim de que estes dados possam contribuir na estratégia de prevenção ao desenvolvimento dessas lesões e, consequentemente, do câncer oral. Material e método: Foi realizado estudo retrospectivo em um serviço de referência da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) no período de 2000 a 2012. Para verificar a associação das variáveis foi utilizado o teste qui-quadrado e o exato de Fisher (p ≤ 0,05). Resultados: Foram investigados 6.560 prontuários, tendo sido selecionados 54 casos, dos quais 44,4% do sexo masculino e 55,6% do feminino, com idade média de 56,93 anos. Com relação aos hábitos, 72,2% eram fumantes e 25% usuários de álcool, sendo que 17,9% exibiam associação dos dois hábitos. As leucoplasias orais foram as lesões mais prevalentes (0,65%), e as eritroplasias orais apresentaram maior associação com apresentação maligna no diagnóstico histopatológico (p = 0,001). A maioria das lesões não apresentou sintomatologia (p = 0,004). A leucoplasia oral foi mais frequente em mulheres fumantes com média de idade de 57 anos. Conclusão: O conhecimento dos fatores associados e das características clínicas das eritroplasias e leucoplasias orais é essencial para o estabelecimento do correto diagnóstico e tratamento.
