Background: Impairments in squat depth have been reported in patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). However, little is known about single-leg squat (SLS) performance in these patients, despite this task being commonly used in the rehabilitation and training settings. Purpose/Hypothesis: The aims of this study were (1) to investigate whether patients with FAIS demonstrate differences in SLS performance compared with healthy controls and (2) to determine whether dynamic range of motion (ROM), muscle strength, hip morphologic measures, hip pain, and hip-specific function predict SLS performance in patients with FAIS. We hypothesized that patients with FAIS would demonstrate impaired SLS performance and that impaired hip biomechanics, muscle strength, and hip-specific function would predict squat performance in patients with FAIS. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Three-dimensional (3D) kinematic data were collected at 100 Hz using a 20-camera 3D motion capture system during 3 SLS trials in 34 patients with FAIS and 26 healthy controls. Isometric muscle strength was tested with a stationary handheld dynamometer in all participants. Squat performance was quantified by squat depth (in meters), and the biomechanical variables of dynamic ROM of the pelvis, the hip, the knee, and the ankle in all planes were calculated. In patients with FAIS, femoral and acetabular morphology were measured using radiographic alpha angles and lateral center-edge angles. Hip pain and hip-specific function were measured using the visual analog scale for pain and the Hip Outcome Score Activities of Daily Living subscale, respectively. Two-tailed independent-samples t tests were used to determine between-group differences for squat depth, dynamic ROM variables, and muscle strength. A hierarchical multiple linear regression (MLR) model was used to determine whether biomechanical variables, muscle strength, hip morphology measures, hip pain, and hip-specific function were predictors of squat depth. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS Version 26. Results: There were no between-group differences in age (FAIS, 30.0 ± 7.0 years vs controls, 27.3 ± 7.0 years; P = .18) or body mass index (FAIS, 23.1 ± 2.8 vs controls, 22.6 ± 3.2; P = .51). Squat depth was less in patients with FAIS compared with healthy controls (FAIS, 0.24 ± 0.4 m vs controls, 0.29 ± 0.05 m; P < .001). In the sagittal plane, patients with FAIS demonstrated less dynamic ROM of the hip (FAIS, 67.8°± 12.4° vs controls, 79.2°± 12.5°; P = .001) and the knee (FAIS, 71.9°± 9.4° vs controls, 78.9°± 13.2°; P = .02) compared with controls. Patients with FAIS also demonstrated a less dynamic coronal plane pelvis ROM (FAIS, 11.3°± 5.0° vs controls, 14.4°± 6.7°; P = .044). Patients with FAIS had reduced hip muscle strength of the hip external rotator (FAIS, 1 ± 0.3 N/kg vs controls, 1.2 ± 0.3 N/kg; P = .034), hip internal rotator (FAIS, 0.8 ± 0.3 N/kg vs controls 1 ± 0.3 N/kg; P = .03), and hip flexor (FAIS, 4 ± 1.1 N/kg vs controls, 4.8 ± 1.2 N/kg; P = .013) muscle groups. The hierarchical MLR revealed that the dynamic ROM of the hip, the knee, and the pelvis, the hip external rotation muscle strength, and the femoral alpha angles were all significant predictors of squat performance, and the final MLR model explained 92.4% of the total variance in squat depth in patients with FAIS. Conclusion: Patients with FAIS demonstrate impaired SLS squat performance compared with healthy controls. This impaired squat performance is predominantly predicted by sagittal plane knee and hip biomechanics and hip external rotator strength, and less by frontal plane pelvic ROM and hip morphology in patients with FAIS. Clinical Relevance: Clinicians should focus treatment on improving dynamic ROM and hip external rotator muscle strength to improve squat performance; however, femoral morphology should also be considered in the treatment paradigm.

Introduction: The use of substances to enhance sports performance among professional and amateur athletes is increasing. Such substances may either be included in the group of dietary supplements or fall into pharmacological classes. Every substance used for this purpose is called an ergogenic agent. The number of ergogenic options available increases every day, favoring overuse and use without proper guidance. Among the dietary supplements, we highlight the use of creatine, a substance widespread in sports. Among the pharmacological groups, many drugs are used. Recently the use of sildenafil citrate by professional athletes from various predominantly aerobic sports modalities was reported in the media. Objective: To compare and demonstrate the responses caused by physical training associated with the use of creatine and sildenafil citrate in mice. Methods: A swim training protocol was applied and then an electrophysiograph was used in order to obtain parameters related to contraction intensity, the area under the curve and the percentage drop. Results: The responses obtained demonstrated the ergogenic action of creatine because it altered the parameters used for measurement. The use of sildenafil citrate did not yield satisfactory results to frame the drug as an ergogenic agent. Conclusion: Creatine has an ergogenic effect, reducing the percentage drop after 10 seconds, while sildenafil demonstrated no ergogenic potential and, interestingly, resulted in weaker responses when compared to the exercise groups. Tales sustancias pueden formar parte del grupo de suplementos alimentarios o integrar clases farmacológicas. Toda sustancia empleada para ese fin es denominada agente ergogénico. El número de opciones entre los agentes ergogénicos aumenta cada día, favoreciendo así su uso excesivo y sin la debida orientación. Entre los suplementos alimentarios, se destaca el uso de creatina, sustancia muy difundida en el medio deportivo. Ya entre los grupos farmacológicos, muchas sustancias son usadas. Recientemente, fue divulgado entre los medios de comunicación el uso de citrato de sildenafil por atletas profesionales, de varias modalidades deportivas, predominantemente las aeróbicas. Objetivos: Comparar y demostrar las respuestas ocasionadas por el entrenamiento físico, asociadas al uso de creatina y citrato de sildenafil en ratones. Introduction Blood biomarkers are measurable metabolic products that allow objective monitoring of the training process, and their analysis provides an opportunity to improve athletic performance. Objective To evaluate blood lactate concentrations in a group of the Valle League weightlifting athletes as a tool to determine the effects of training and its direct relationship to performance during competition. Methods This is an observational cross-sectional study. Lactate levels of 32 weightlifting athletes belonging to the Valle Weightlifting League were evaluated. Blood samples were taken from the ear lobe to quantify the lactate concentration, using a Scout Lactate analyzer. Samples were taken before and after a high intensity training section consisting of four maximum repetition (MR) sports gestures, in which 5 series and 15 repetitions were performed for each sports gesture, with a rest period of 40 seconds between each exercise. The software program SPSS, version 25, was used to determine the lactate concentrations. Results An average lactate concentration 22.46 mg/dL was obtained for the athletes at rest, and an average of 98.30 mg/dL in the final lactate concentration, after high intensity exercise. Significant differences were found between the initial and final lactate concentrations. Conclusion Lactate concentration increases with physical activity; it varies from one individual to another; and it can be used as a biomarker of intensity of physical activity in the field of sports. Objetivos Avaliar as concentrações de lactato no sangue de um grupo de atletas de halterofilismo da Liga Valle como ferramenta para determinar os efeitos do treino e sua relação direta com o desempenho durante a competição. Métodos Este é um estudo transversal e observacional. Foram avaliados os níveis de lactato em 32 atletas da Liga de Halterofilismo Valle. A amostra de sangue foi retirada do lóbulo da orelha com o intuito de quantificar a concentração de lactato com o analisador Scout Lactate. As amostras foram colhidas antes e depois de uma seção de treino de alta intensidade, que consistiu em quatro gestos esportivos de repetição máxima (RM), nos quais foram realizadas 5 séries e 15 repetições para cada gesto esportivo, com um período de repouso de 40 segundos entre cada exercício. O software SPSS, versão 25 foi usado para determinar as concentrações de lactato. Resultados A concentração média de lactato nos atletas em repouso foi 22,46 mg/dl e a concentração média final foi de 98,30 mg/dl depois de exercício de alta intensidade. Foram encontradas diferenças significativas ao comparar a concentração inicial com a concentração final de lactato. Conclusões A concentração de lactato aumenta com a realização da atividade física, é variável de um indivíduo para outro e pode ser usada como biomarcador de intensidade da atividade física na área dos esportes. Métodos Este es un estudio transversal y observacional. Fueron evaluados los niveles de lactato en 32 atletas de la Liga de Halterofilia Valle. La muestra de sangre fue retirada del lóbulo de la oreja con el objetivo de cuantificar la concentración de lactato con el analizador Scout Lactate. Las muestras fueron tomadas antes y después de una sección de entrenamiento de alta intensidad, que consistió en cuatro gestos deportivos de repetición máxima (RM), en los que se realizaron 5 series y 15 repeticiones para cada gesto deportivo, con un período de descanso de 40 segundos entre cada ejercicio. OBJETIVO: Determinar a correlação entre a percepção subjetiva do esforço (PSE) e a fadiga neuromuscular dos membros inferiores por meio de saltos mensurados no pré e pós treino em atletas de futebol.MÉTODOS: Quatorze atletas de futebol (sub 17) foram monitorados ao longo de quatro sessões de treinamento. Com as seguintes características: estatura (173±6,81cm), peso (64,43±5,80kg) e percentual de gordura (14,74±3,11). A PSE foi monitorada por meio do aplicativo e-trimp, 15 minutos após o final de cada sessão de treinamento. Os saltos foram avaliados por meio da plataforma de salto Jump System Pro, 10 minutos, antes e depois das sessões de treinamento. Os dados foram analisados no programa estatístico SPSS por meio da estatística descritiva e correlação de Spearman.RESULTADOS: A correlação entre a PSE e a diferença da potência relativa do salto vertical (pré/pós treino) foi fraca para todas as sessões. As sessões 1 e 4 apresentaram correlação negativa (r=-0,184, p=0,530; r=-0,159, p=0,587). As sessões 2 e 3 apresentaram correlação positiva (r=0,010, p=0,973; r=0,373, p=0,188), respectivamente.CONCLUSÃO: Não foram observadas correlações estatisticamente significativas entre a PSE e a potência relativa de salto nos atletas avaliados.ABSTRACT. The correlation between the rating of perceived exertion and neuromuscular fatigue on the lower body in soccer athletes.OBJECTIVE: Define the correlation between the rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and the power of the lower limbs before and after training in soccer athletes.METHODS: Were monitored 14 soccer athletes (under 17 years old) over four training sessions. With the following characteristics: height (173±6.81cm), weight (64.43±5.80kg) and fat percentage (14.74±3.11). RPE was monitored through the e-trimp app, 15 minutes after the end of each training session. Jumps were evaluated through the Jump System Pro jumping platform, 10 minutes before and after the training sessions. Data was analyzed in the SPSS statistical program using descriptive statistics and Spearman correlation.RESULTS: The correlation between the RPE and the difference of the relative power of the vertical jump test (pre/post training) was weak for all the sessions. Sessions 1 and 4 presented a negative correlation (r=-0.184, p=0.530; r=-0.159, p=0.587). Sessions 2 and 3 showed a positive correlation (r=0.010, p=0.973; r=0.373, p=0.188), respectively.CONCLUSION: There were no statistically significant correlations between the RPE and the relative jumping power in the evaluated athletes.

Metabolic profile and performance responses during two consecutive sessions of sprint interval training. J Strength Cond Res 34(4): 1078-1085, 2020-The study aimed to (a) typify the cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and performance responses during a single sprint interval training (SIT) session, (b) investigate the interference of 2 subsequent sessions on cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and performance responses, and (c) verify the relationships of SIT total work performed with aerobic fitness indices. Thirty-six untrained men performed 2 SIT sessions (SIT1 and SIT2) separated by 24 hours of recovery. Each session was composed of 4 Wingate bouts interspersed by 4 minutes. Within SIT sessions, bout work, peak power, and mean power of each Wingate bout decreased significantly, while the fatigue index increased over time (p < 0.001). The SIT elicited lower acute responses of oxygen uptake and heart rate than maximal values (≈67 and ≈79%, respectively) (p < 0.05) as well as a short time spent at high cardiorespiratory demand. For SIT outcomes, no interactions were verified between Wingate bout performance, average heart rate, and average oxygen uptake. In addition, the oxygen uptake integral (SIT1:300.5 ± 38.6 ml·kg; SIT2:306.9 ± 41.1 ml·kg) and total work (SIT1:54.6 ± 10.4 kJ; SIT2:54.9 ± 10.6 kJ) did not differ between SIT sessions (p > 0.05). Furthermore, significant moderate to strong correlations were found between SIT1 and SIT2 total work and peak oxygen uptake (r = 0.48; r = 0.52, respectively), maximal aerobic power (r = 0.89; r = 0.89, respectively), and respiratory compensation point (r = 0.80; r = 0.78, respectively). In summary, an SIT session elicited a short time spent at high cardiorespiratory demand, while the SIT total work was significantly correlated with aerobic fitness indices. In addition, 2 consecutive SIT sessions interspaced by 24 hours did not affect performance outcomes, or cardiorespiratory and blood responses. WOS: 000496520600012, Introduction: There is no previous study examining muscle damage responses from training load changes in individuals trained exclusively with repeated sprint exercise. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of training load changes on physical performance and exercise-induced muscle damage in male college athletes who were trained using a 30m repeated sprint protocol. Methods: Twelve participants completed the 6-week training period (three sessions/week), which consisted of progressively increasing intensity training in the first 5 weeks. On the first day of the training period, all sprints were performed at 70-80% of maximum effort. In the first session of the 5th week (Maximal intensity training; MIT), all sprints (10x30m sprints) were performed at maximal speed. The sets (10 sprints at maximal speed in each set) were repeated until exhaustion (Exhaustive training; ET) in the first training session of the 6th week, followed by two sessions of the normal training. Isometric strength, 30m sprint performance, flexibility, serum creatine kinase (CK) and cortisol were measured periodically during the examination period. Results: Isometric strength, 30m sprint performance, and flexibility were significantly decreased following the ET, and did not recover during the following 9-day period, which consisted of two training sessions and 6 days of recovery. Cortisol was significantly elevated immediately after the ET but was not changed after training on first day and during MIT. CK was significantly elevated after training every week, but the increase at 24 hours after ET was significantly higher than after the first day and MIT. Conclusions: Dramatically increasing the volume of maximal intensity repeated sprint exercise results in greater relative muscle damage even in trained individuals, which will significantly limit their performance. Further training sessions, even at normal intensity and volume with insufficient time for muscle recovery, may prolong the duration of fatigue.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar a fadiga vocal e sua relação com a sensação de esforço fonatório e desconforto no trato vocal de professores após uma semana de atividade letiva. Método Estudo transversal, quantitativo, participando 40 professores com queixas de fadiga vocal. Procedimentos realizados no começo e final da semana, antes do início das aulas: Índice de Fadiga Vocal–IFV, Escala Borg, Escala de Desconforto do Trato Vocal–EDTV e registro de voz para análise perceptivo-auditiva. Resultados Não houve mudanças no esforço fonatório e na frequência e intensidade do desconforto no trato vocal. Em relação ao IFV, nos domínios fadiga e limitação vocal e desconforto físico associado à voz, os professores iniciaram e terminaram a semana com valores compatíveis aos dos disfônicos. No domínio restrição vocal iniciaram a semana com valores compatíveis aos dos indivíduos vocalmente saudáveis e no final da semana tiveram escores compatíveis aos dos disfônicos. Na recuperação com repouso vocal os valores pré e pós foram abaixo da nota de corte, significando menor recuperação vocal. Quanto maior é a sensação de fadiga vocal, maior é a percepção de esforço fonatório; mais frequente é a sensação de aperto, secura, garganta dolorida, sensível e irritada, e mais intensas as sensações de desconforto no trato vocal: aperto, secura, coceira, garganta sensível e irritada. Conclusão Professores percebem aumento de fadiga vocal, sem mudanças no esforço fonatório e desconforto de trato vocal após uma semana de aula. Quanto maior é a percepção de fadiga vocal, maior é a sensação de esforço e desconforto fonatório. ABSTRACT Purpose Investigate vocal fatigue and its relationship with the sensation of phonatory effort and discomfort in the vocal tract of teachers after a week of activity. Methods Cross-sectional, quantitative study, involving 40 teachers with complaints of vocal fatigue. Procedures performed at the beginning and end of the week, before the classes start were Vocal Fatigue Index, Borg Scale, Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale, and voice recording for perceptual analysis. Results There were no changes in phonatory effort and in frequency and intensity of discomfort in vocal tract. In relation to the VFI, in the domains of fatigue and vocal limitation and physical discomfort associated with the voice, teachers started and ended the week with values compatible with dysphonia. In the vocal restriction domain, they started the week with values compatible with vocal healthy individuals and at the end of the week they had scores compatible with dysphonia. In recovery with vocal rest, the pre and post values were below the cut-off score, meaning less vocal recovery. The greater the sensation of vocal fatigue, the greater the perception of phonatory effort; more frequent is the sensation of tightness, dryness, sore, sensitive and irritated throat and more intense the sensations of discomfort in the vocal tract: tightness, dryness, itching, sensitive and irritated throat. Conclusion Teachers perceive an increase in vocal fatigue, without changes in phonatory effort and vocal tract discomfort after one week of class. The greater the perception of vocal fatigue, the greater the sensation of effort and phonatory discomfort.

Objective: To evaluate the strength of respiratory muscles and to compare maximum inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory (MEP) pressure and MEP/MIP ratio between patients with chronic respiratory diseases and healthy individuals. Methods: Case-control study. Individuals with neuromuscular disease and post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans were considered. In addition, they were also matched according to anthropometric and demographic characteristics with healthy children and adolescents. MIP, MEP in the three groups, and pulmonary function only in patients with chronic respiratory diseases were recorded. Results: A total of 52 subjects with CRD (25 with neuromuscular disease, and 27 with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans) and 85 healthy individuals were included, with an average age of 11.3±2.1 years. Patients with neuromuscular disease and post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans presented lower MIP and MEP when compared with healthy individuals, although MEP/MIP ratio was lower in patients with neuromuscular disease (0.87±0.3) and higher in patients with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (1.1±0.3) compared to the healthy group (0.97±0.2). Only in patients with neuromuscular disease a negative correlation was observed between MEP/MIP ratio and age (r=-0.50; p=0.01). Conclusions: Differences in the pattern of muscular weakness between patients with chronic respiratory diseases were observed. In patients with neuromuscular disease, a decrease in the MEP/MIP ratio depending on MIP was verified; and in those patients with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans, an increase in the MEP/MIP ratio depending on MIP was also observed. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a força dos músculos respiratórios e comparar a relação entre a pressão expiratória máxima (PEmáx) e a pressão inspiratória máxima (PImáx) em pacientes com doença respiratória crônica (DRC) e crianças saudáveis. Métodos: Estudo caso-controle. Foram selecionados indivíduos com doença neuromuscular e bronquiolite obliterante pós-infecciosa. Ademais, os grupos foram pareados com crianças e adolescentes saudáveis, considerando características antropométricas e demográficas. Foram registradas a PImáx e a PEmáx nos três grupos e a função pulmonar apenas em pacientes com doença respiratória crônica. Resultados: Foram incluídos 52 indivíduos com DRC (25 com doença neuromuscular e 27 com bronquiolite obliterante pós-infecciosa) e 85 indivíduos saudáveis, com idade média de 11,3±2,1 anos. Pacientes com doença neuromuscular e bronquiolite obliterante pós-infecciosa apresentaram menor PImáx e PEmáx em comparação aos indivíduos saudáveis, embora a relação PEmáx/PImáx tenha sido menor nos pacientes com doença neuromuscular (0,87±0,3) e maior nos pacientes com bronquiolite obliterante pós-infecciosa (1,1±0,3) em comparação ao grupo saudável (0,97±0,2). Somente em pacientes com doença neuromuscular foi observada uma correlação negativa entre a razão PEmáx/PImáx e a idade (r=-0,50; p=0,01). Conclusões: Foram observadas diferenças no padrão de fraqueza muscular em pacientes com doença respiratória crônica. Nos pacientes com doença neuromuscular, verificou-se diminuição na relação PEmáx/PImáx dependendo da PImáx; em pacientes com bronquiolite obliterante pós-infecciosa, foi observado aumento na relação dependendo da PImáx.

Currently, the use of sodium bicarbonate (SB) as an ergogenic supplement has been linked to improved performance in several high-intensity and short time interval modalities because it is a natural buffer of the body fluids of the human body. This study aimed to evaluate the acute effect of SB supplementation on muscle strength endurance of resistance training practitioners. Crossover clinical trial, placebo-controlled (PL), and single-masked, included 10 trained adult men. The maximum repetition (1RM) and exhaustion tests with 80% 1RM were performed in the extensor chair and direct thread. In all sessions, the volunteers were verbally stimulated, the total maximum repetitions in the exercises and the blood lactate concentration were measured. SB was supplemented at a dose of 0.3g/kg body mass. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25.0. The Shapiro–Wilk test was used to evaluate the normality of the data, and the Student’s t-test was used for independent and paired samples. The size of the Cohen’s effect was calculated, and the significance level was set at p 1.00). Atualmente, o uso de bicarbonato de sódio (SB) como suplemento ergogênico tem sido associado a um melhor desempenho em várias modalidades de alta intensidade e intervalos de tempo curtos, pois é um amortecedor natural dos fluidos corporais do corpo humano. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito agudo da suplementação de SB na resistência da força muscular de praticantes de treinamento de resistência. Ensaio clínico cruzado, controlado por placebo (PL) e com máscara única, incluiu 10 homens adultos treinados. Os testes de repetição máxima (1RM) e exaustão com 80% de 1RM foram realizados na cadeira extensora e na rosca direta. Em todas as sessões, os voluntários foram estimulados verbalmente, foram medidas as repetições máximas totais nos exercícios e a concentração de lactato sanguíneo. O SB foi suplementado na dose de 0,3 g / kg de massa corporal. A análise estatística foi realizada no SPSS versão 25.0. Introduction: The impairment of muscle strength and fatigue in leprosy remains a problem that requires careful attention to avoid or minimize its progression, as well as prevention of disabilities and deformities. Objective: To investigate the maximum voluntary contraction and time to muscle fatigue in leprosy patients. Method: A total of 21 leprosy patients and 21 healthy subjects completed the sample. The method used to determine the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) of the handgrip followed the recommendation of the American Society of Hand Therapists with the use of a hydraulic hand grip dynamometer. The test was performed three times with each hand, with a time interval of 60 seconds between successive trials. The subject was instructed to perform a maximal isometric force against the dynamometer for 5 seconds. The peaks were recorded and used for the fatigue test. For the fatigue test, we recorded the electromyogram of the forearm muscles to offline determine the onset time for the muscle contraction (14 bits, Miograph 2 USB®, Miotec, Brazil). Results: Leprosy patients had lower MVC compared with healthy subjects (p > 0.05), both in the dominant and the non-dominant hands. The time to fatigue in the leprosy and control groups was similar (p < 0.05). We observed that leprosy patients had more contractions than the healthy subjects (22.6 ± 11.8 contractions for the leprosy group vs. 12.3 ± 6.9 contractions for the control group, p > 0.05). Conclusion: Multibacillary leprosy patients lost muscle force without modifying the resistance to fatigue. Resumo Introdução: O comprometimento da força muscular e a fadiga na hanseníase continuam sendo problemas que requerem cuidadosa atenção para evitar ou minimizar sua progressão, bem como prevenir incapacidades e deformidades. Objetivo: Avaliar a força muscular e o tempo até a fadiga em pacientes com hanseníase Método: Vinte e um pacientes com hanseníase e 21 indivíduos saudáveis completaram a amostra. O método utilizado para determinar a contração voluntária máxima (CVM) da força de preensão palmar seguiu a recomendação da Sociedade Americana de Terapeutas da Mão com o uso de um dinamômetro de preensão manual. O teste foi realizado três vezes em cada mão, com intervalo de tempo de sessenta segundos entre tentativas sucessivas. O sujeito foi instruído a realizar força isométrica máxima contra o dinamômetro durante cinco segundos. Os picos foram registrados e usados para o teste de fadiga. Para o teste de fadiga, registrou-se o eletromiograma dos músculos do antebraço para determinar off-line o tempo de início da contração muscular (14 bits, Miograph 2 USB ® , Miotec, Brasil). Resultados: Os pacientes com hanseníase apresentaram menor CVM em relação aos saudáveis (p < 0,05) nas mãos dominante e não dominante. Não houve diferença no tempo de fadiga entre os grupos hanseníase e controle (p > 0,05). Foi observado que os pacientes com hanseníase tinham mais contrações do que os saudáveis (22,6 ± 11,8 contrações para o grupo com hanseníase vs. 12,3 ± 6,9 para o grupo controle, p < 0,05). Conclusão: Pacientes com hanseníase multibacilar apresentaram perda de força muscular sem modificação da resistência à fadiga. Objetivo: Evaluar la fuerza muscular y el tiempo hasta la fatiga de pacientes con lepra. Método: Veintiún pacientes con lepra y 21 sujetos sanos completaron la muestra. El método utilizado para determinar la contracción voluntaria máxima (CVM) de la fuerza de asimiento palmar siguió la recomendación de la Sociedad Americana de Terapeutas de la Mano con el uso de un dinamómetro de asimiento manual. La prueba se realizó tres veces con cada mano, con un intervalo de tiempo de 60 segundos entre intentos sucesivos. El sujeto fue instruido a realizar una fuerza isométrica máxima contra el dinamómetro durante 5 segundos. Los picos se registraron y se utilizaron para la prueba de fatiga. Para la prueba de fatiga, registramos el electromiograma de los músculos del antebrazo para determinar fuera de línea el tiempo de inicio de la contracción muscular (14 bits, Miograph 2 USB ® , Miotec, Brasil). Resultados: Los pacientes con lepra presentaron menor CVM con relación a los sanos (p < 0,05) en las manos dominante y no dominante. No hubo diferencia en el tiempo de fatiga entre los grupos de lepra y control (p > 0,05). Se observó que los pacientes con lepra tenían más contracciones que los sanos (22,6 ± 11,8 contracciones para el grupo con hanseniasis frente a 12,3 ± 6,9 para el grupo control, p < 0,05). Conclusión: Pacientes con hanseniasis multibacilar presentaron pérdida de fuerza muscular sin modificación de la resistencia a la fatiga.

Introduction Understanding the recovery in response to different sprint protocols is important for optimizing neuromuscular gains and organizing training sessions in sports. The current study aimed to investigate acute neuromuscular changes following a moderate volume of sprint protocols with and without change-of-direction. Methods 26 well-trained male collegiate athletes from different sports were randomly allocated into straight-line group (SLG) or change-of-direction group (CODG). The protocols were 1 × 15 repetitions of 20-meter sprints in line (SLG) or with two changes in each repetition (CODG). Knee extension maximal and explosive strength, jump performance, serum creatine kinase, and quadriceps and hamstrings echo intensity were collected pre-, post- 0, 24, 48, and 72 h post-exercise. Results There were no significant changes in any of the variables at any time point after the exercise protocols in comparison with pre-exercise values (p > 0.05). Conclusions The present study suggests that sprint training with moderate volume with or without change of direction does not induce neuromuscular or physiological changes during 72 h post-exercise. This information is especially important for sports staff in order to optimize training prescription and frequency.

RESUMO Buscou-se investigar os parâmetros eletromiográficos da fadiga muscular durante exercício dinâmico realizado com resistência variável (elástica) e resistência fixa (polia). Dez homens treinados participaram voluntariamente do estudo. Foram realizadas duas contrações voluntárias isométricas máximas (CVIM) de flexão do cotovelo com 5 segundos de duração cada e 2 minutos de intervalo entre as mesmas. Em seguida, os voluntários realizaram a flexão unilateral do cotovelo até a exaustão, utilizando resistência fixa e elástica com ritmo pré-estabelecido de 2 segundos para cada fase do movimento. A resistência constante foi realizada na polia a 30% da CVIM. Para a resistência elástica, o controle de carga era baseado na percepção subjetiva de esforço do participante. A ordem do exercício foi randomizada, e o sinal de eletromiografia do músculo bíceps braquial foi registrado durante as contrações. A partir do sinal eletromiográfico referente a cada execução de movimento, foram traçadas retas de regressão linear para as variáveis RMS e frequência de potência mediana (FPM). As inclinações das retas normalizadas pelo coeficiente linear das equações de regressão foram comparadas por meio do teste t pareado. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os tipos de resistência (elástica e polia). RESUMEN En esta investigación se pretendió estudiar los estándares electromiográficos de fatiga muscular durante la realización de ejercicio dinámico con resistencia variable (elástico) y resistencia fija (polea). Han participado voluntariamente diez varones entrenados. Se llevó a cabo dos contracciones voluntarias máximas (CVIM) de flexión de codo, cada cual de cinco segundos de duración y dos minutos de intervalo entre las mismas. Después los voluntarios hicieron la flexión unilateral del codo hasta sentirse cansados, y emplearon la resistencia fija y elástica con ritmo prestablecido de dos segundos para cada fase del movimiento. Se llevó a cabo la resistencia constante en la polea a 30% de la CVIM. Relativo a la resistencia elástica, el control de carga se basaba en una percepción subjetiva del esfuerzo empleado por el participante. El orden del ejercicio fue aleatorio, y se registró la señal electromiográfica del músculo bíceps durante las contracciones. Desde la señal electromiográfica relativa a cada ejecución del movimiento se dibujó rectas de regresión lineal para las variables RMS y la frecuencia de potencia media (FPM). Se confirmó las inclinaciones de rectas normalizadas por el coeficiente lineal de las ecuaciones de regresión a través de la prueba t pareada. No se observaron diferencias significantes entre los tipos de resistencia (elástica y polea). ABSTRACT The present study sought to investigate the electromyographic parameters of muscle fatigue during dynamic exercise conducted with variable resistance (elastic) and fixed resistance (pulley). Ten trained men participated voluntarily in the study. Two maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) of the elbow flexors were performed for 5 seconds and a two minutes interval rest was given between reps. Then, the volunteers performed unilateral elbow flexion repetitions until the exhaustion using fixed and elastic resistance with a pre-established rhythm of two seconds for each phase of the movement. Constant resistance was carried out at the pulley at 30% of MVIC. For the elastic resistance, load control was based on the subjective perception of the participant's effort. The exercise order was randomized, and electromyography signal of the biceps brachii muscle was recorded during contractions. From the electromyographic signal related to every movement, linear regression lines were drawn for root mean square (RMS) variables and median power frequency (MPF). The inclination of the lines normalized by the linear coefficient of regression equations were compared using the paired t-test. No significant differences between the types of resistance (elastic and pulley) were found. During elbow flexion exercise performed with elastic resistance and pulley, electromyographic parameters of fatigue did not differ. Effort perception during the exercise with an elastic implement does not influence the electromyographic signal pattern (RMS and MPF).

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do treinamento fisico aplicado em um periodo pre-competitivo na potencia e na resistencia de forca explosiva de membros inferiores, no estresse e na recuperacao de jovens atletas de voleibol. Sete atletas (15,8 ± 0,5 anos, 186,1 ± 6,6cm, 75,9 ± 1,8kg) de uma equipe de voleibol sub-16, do sexo masculino, foram treinados durante um periodo pre-competitivo de quatro semanas. A carga interna de treinamento (CIT) foi monitorada pelo metodo PSE da sessao. Testes de salto vertical com contramovimento (CMJ) e de natureza intermitente, de quatro series de 15 segundos (TSVI), foram avaliados no 1o dia de treinamento (linha de base), no ultimo dia da 2a (pos-semana 2) e da 4a semana (pos-semana 4). OBJECTIVE: This study sought to analyze the effect of muscle fatigue induced by active isotonic resistance training at a moderate intensity by measuring the knee extension motion during the stabilometric response in a single-leg stance among healthy university students who perform resistance training on a regular basis. METHOD: Eleven healthy university students were subjected to a one-repetition maximum (1RM) test. In addition, stabilometric assessment was performed before and after the intervention and consisted of a muscle fatiguing protocol, in which knee extension was selected as the fatiguing task. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used to investigate the normality of the data, and the Wilcoxon test was used to compare the stabilometric parameters before and after induction of muscle fatigue, at a significance level of p≤0.05. Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of the volunteers' age, height, body mass, and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: The sample population was 23.1±2.7 years of age, averaged 1.79.2±0.07 m in height and 75.6±8.0 Kg in weight, and had a BMI of 23.27±3.71 Kg.m-2. The volunteers performed exercises 3.36±1.12 days/week and achieved a load of 124.54±22.07 Kg on 1RM and 74.72±13.24 Kg on 60% 1RM. The center of pressure (CoP) oscillation on the mediolateral plane before and after fatigue induction was 2.89±0.89 mm and 4.09±0.59 mm, respectively, while the corresponding values on the anteroposterior plane were 2.5±2.2 mm and 4.09±2.26 mm, respectively. The CoP oscillation amplitude on the anteroposterior and mediolateral planes exhibited a significant difference before and after fatigue induction (p=0.04 and p=0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that muscle fatigue affects postural control, particularly with the mediolateral and anteroposterior CoP excursion. OBJETIVO: Analisar o efeito da fadiga muscular induzida por exercício isotônico ativo-resistido de extensão de joelhos em intensidade moderada na resposta estabilométrica em apoio unipodal em universitários saudáveis, praticantes de treinamento resistido. MÉTODO: Para tanto, 11 jovens universitários saudáveis foram submetidos ao teste de 1-RM, avaliação estabilométrica pré e pós-intervenção e protocolo de indução à fadiga muscular utilizando a extensão do joelho como tarefa fatigante. Utilizou-se o teste de Shapiro-Wilk para verificação da normalidade dos dados e o teste de Wilcoxon para as comparações entre os parâmetros estabilométricos pré e pós-indução à fadiga muscular com nível de significância estipulado em p≤0,05, enquanto a estatística descritiva foi aplicada para caracterizar a idade, estatura, massa corporal e o índice de massa corporal (IMC). RESULTADOS: O grupo apresentou 23,1±2,7 anos; 1,79,2±0,07 m; 75,6±8,0 Kg; 23,27±3,71 Kg.m-2; 3,36±1,12 número de dias de atividade/semana; 1RM: 124,54± 22,07 kg; 60% de 1-RM: 74,72±13,24 Kg. A oscilação do centro de pressão (CP) médio-lateral pré e pós-fadiga, respectivamente, foi de 2,89±0,89 mm e 4,09±0,59 mm, enquanto a oscilação ântero-posterior foi de 2,5±2,2 mm e 4,09±2,26 mm. Encontrou-se diferença na largura de oscilação do CP nas direções ântero-posterior e médio-lateral entre as condições pré e pós-fadiga, p=0,04 e p=0,05, respectivamente. CONCLUSÕES: Portanto, o estudo demonstrou que a fadiga muscular altera o controle postural, especialmente na excursão médio-lateral e ântero-posterior do CP.

Reaction time and response time are considered important abilities and can potentially affect combat performance. This study investigated the effect of a specific fatigue protocol on reaction time, response time, performance time, and kick impact. Seven male athletes reported to the laboratory on two different days. During day one, athletes performed a specific progressive taekwondo test, and on day two, a protocol for determining reaction time, response time, performance time, and kick impact before and after a time to exhaustion test at an intensity level corresponding to the maximal kick frequency obtained during the specific progressive taekwondo test. Muscle activation from rectus femoris and kick impact of the preferred limb were assessed. No differences were observed for response time and performance time. However, kick impact decreased (43 ± 27 to 13 ± 10 g, p 0.01) while reaction time increased (145 ± 51 to 223 ± 133 ms, p 0.05). Moderate correlation was observed between kick impact and response time (r = 0.565; p 0.01), and kick impact and performance time (r = 0.494; p 0.05). Results indicate that coaches and athletes may use taekwondo training programmes on coordination-based exercises leading to improve response time and to reduce fatigue effects in order to improve technique effectiveness and enhance the possibilities of scoring in a competitive situation.

We investigated cerebral responses, simultaneously with peripheral and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) responses, during different VO2MAX-matched aerobic exercise modes. Nine cyclists (VO2MAX of 57.5 ± 6.2 ml·kg(-1)·min(-1)) performed a maximal, controlled-pace incremental test (MIT) and a self-paced 4 km time trial (TT4km). Measures of cerebral (COX) and muscular (MOX) oxygenation were assessed throughout the exercises by changes in oxy- (O2Hb) and deoxy-hemoglobin (HHb) concentrations over the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle, respectively. Primary motor cortex (PMC) electroencephalography (EEG), VL, and rectus femoris EMG were also assessed throughout the trials, together with power output and cardiopulmonary responses. The RPE was obtained at regular intervals. Similar motor output (EMG and power output) occurred from 70% of the duration in MIT and TT4km, despite the greater motor output, muscle deoxygenation (↓ MOX) and cardiopulmonary responses in TT4km before that point. Regarding cerebral responses, there was a lower COX (↓ O2Hb concentrations in PFC) at 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60%, but greater at 100% of the TT4km duration when compared to MIT. The alpha wave EEG in PMC remained constant throughout the exercise modes, with greater values in TT4km. The RPE was maximal at the endpoint in both exercises, but it increased slower in TT4km than in MIT. Results showed that similar motor output and effort tolerance were attained at the closing stages of different VO2MAX-matched aerobic exercises, although the different disturbance until that point. Regardless of different COX responses during most of the exercises duration, activation in PMC was preserved throughout the exercises, suggesting that these responses may be part of a centrally-coordinated exercise regulation.

Introduction: Muscle fatigue can be defined as a decrease in the performance of the neuromuscular system in generating force. This situation is considered a complex physiological process involving various body systems, in order to avoid irreversible damage or even cell death. Objective: The aim of this study was to measure muscle strength in order to assess the level of fatigue among footwear industry workers, and to determine a possible correlation between muscle strength and the perception of reported fatigue. Materials and Methods: The study included 32 male workers from the footwear industry with a mean age of 34.63 ± 11.98 years. The workers performed the handgrip strength test using a handheld dynamometer, and completed the Bipolar Fatigue Questionnaire. Results: The mean result of strength testing was 23.1 ± 8.3 kgf, and the mean score of the fatigue questionnaire was 2.28 ± 0.93 points. However, a low correlation was observed between the results of the fatigue questionnaire and the strength test results. Conclusion: The grip strength results of the footwear workers were below the values for the general Brazilian population, a fact that may indicate potential muscle fatigue. However, a low correlation with the perception of fatigue was indicated by the questionnaire. Resumo Introdução: A fadiga muscular pode ser definida como uma diminuição na capacidade do sistema neuromuscular em conseguir gerar força. Essa condição é considerada como um processo fisiológico complexo que envolve diversos sistemas do organismo, com o objetivo de evitar danos irreversíveis ou, até mesmo, morte celular. Objetivo: Avaliar a força de preensão palmar em trabalhadores do setor calçadista e verificar a existência de correlação entre a força muscular e a percepção da fadiga relatada. Materiais e Métodos: Participaram do estudo 32 trabalhadores do sexo masculino, com média de idade de 34,63 ± 11,98 anos e que atuavam no setor calçadista. Os trabalhadores realizaram o teste de contração voluntária máxima (CVM) utilizando um dinamômetro hidráulico de preensão palmar e responderam ao questionário Bipolar de Fadiga. Durante o teste, cada trabalhador executava três repetições da CVM e a média das medidas era obtida. Resultados: A força muscular apresentou uma média de 23,1 ± 8,3kgf e o escore do questionário de fadiga apresentou uma média de 2,28 ± 0,93 pontos. Entretanto, foi observada baixa correlação entre as medidas da CVM e os escores do questionário utilizado. Conclusão: Os trabalhadores do setor calçadista apresentaram força muscular abaixo do nível da população brasileira, o que sugere a ocorrência de fadiga muscular, porém, observou-se baixa correlação com a percepção de fadiga relatada.

RESUMO Objetivo O principal objetivo deste estudo foi investigar o efeito do tempo de contração e repouso na atividade dos músculos masseter e temporal. Métodos 49 sujeitos do sexo feminino com idade entre 18 e 30 anos foram divididos em grupos DTM (n: 26) e controle (n: 23). A eletromiografia de superfície foi utilizada para avaliar os músculos temporal anterior e masseter durante protocolos de contração e repouso muscular. Foram analisados os parâmetros eletromiográfico raiz quadrada da média, frequência mediana e o coeficiente da inclinação da reta de regressão linear. Resultados Foi encontrado efeito significativo do tempo no protocolo de contração e de repouso muscular. No protocolo de contração, sujeitos com DTM apresentaram significativa diminuição da frequência mediana no masseter direito e do coeficiente de inclinação do músculo temporal direito comparados ao grupo controle. Conclusão Apesar de os sujeitos com DTM apresentarem maior suscetibilidade à fadiga, comparados aos controles, ambos os grupos devem respeitar o tempo máximo de 5 s de contração voluntária máxima e no mínimo 30 s de repouso entre sucessivas contrações da musculatura mastigatória durante protocolos de avaliação clínica ou de pesquisa. ABSTRACT Purpose The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of time of contraction and rest on the masseter and temporal muscles activity. Methods 49 female subjects between 18 and 30 years of age were divided into TMD (n: 26) and control groups (n: 23). Surface electromyograph was used to evaluate the anterior temporal and masseter muscles during contraction and rest protocols. The root means square, median frequency and slope coefficient of the linear regression line parameters were analyzed. Results A significant effect of time in the contraction and rest muscle protocols was found. TMD patients showed a significant decrease in median frequency in the right masseter muscle and the slope coefficient in the right temporal muscle during the contraction protocol to control subjects. Conclusion Despite the TMD patients presented with higher fatigue susceptibility compared to the control group, both groups must meet the maximum time of 5 s of maximum voluntary contraction and at least 30 s rest between successive contractions of masticatory muscles during clinical or research assessment protocols.

Studies have shown that resistance exercise reduces 24-hour blood pressure to levels below resting values, although this is not a universal finding. The number of repetitions has been shown to influence this response. Thus, the aim of the study was to analyze the effects of resistance exercise performed until failure (UF) on 24-hour blood pressure in hypertensive women. Thirteen hypertensive women underwent three experimental sessions in random order: UF, resistance exercise with repetitions before concentric failure (BF) and control (C). Prior to and up to 24 hours after the sessions, cardiovascular variables, as well as the nocturnal fall in blood pressure, the morning surge, and the presence or absence of a blood pressure dip pattern were established using an ambulatory blood pressure monitor. In both wakefulness and sleep there was no significant difference among the three groups. However, after UF and C fewer patients presented a dip in blood pressure (46% and 38%, respectively) compared BF (77%), p=0.047. O prejuízo funcional parece diferir entre membros superiores e membros inferiores de pacientes com DPOC. Dois possíveis mecanismos explicam os sintomas importantes de dispneia e fadiga relatados pelos pacientes ao executar tarefas com membros superiores não sustentados: a disfunção neuromecânica dos músculos respiratórios e a alteração dos volumes pulmonares durante as atividades realizadas com membros superiores. A disfunção neuromecânica está relacionada à alteração do padrão respiratório e à simultaneidade de estímulos aferentes e eferentes musculares, o que causaria a dissincronia na ação dos músculos respiratórios em pacientes com DPOC durante esse tipo de exercício. Adicionalmente, o aumento da ventilação durante os exercícios com membros superiores em pacientes com DPOC induz à hiperinsuflação dinâmica em diferentes cargas de trabalho. Nos membros inferiores, há redução da força e da endurance muscular do quadríceps femoral nos pacientes com DPOC comparados a indivíduos saudáveis. Uma explicação para essas reduções é a anormalidade no metabolismo muscular (diminuição da capacidade aeróbia), a dependência do metabolismo glicolítico e o acúmulo rápido de lactato durante o exercício. Quando contrastadas as atividades de membros superiores e membros inferiores, os exercícios com membros superiores resultam em maior demanda metabólica e ventilatória com mais intensa sensação de dispneia e fadiga. Significant dyspnea and fatigue have been reported by these patients when performing tasks with unsupported upper limbs and two mechanisms have been proposed to explain this fact: neuromechanical dysfunction of respiratory muscles; and changes in lung volume during such activities. The neuromechanical dysfunction seen in COPD patients during this type of exercise is related to changes in the breathing pattern, as well as to the simultaneity of afferent and efferent muscle stimuli, resulting in respiratory muscle asynchrony. In addition, the increased ventilation during upper limb exercise in patients with COPD leads to dynamic hyperinflation at different workloads. During lower limb exercises, the strength and endurance of the quadriceps muscle is lower in COPD patients than in healthy subjects. This could by explained by abnormal muscle metabolism (decreased aerobic capacity), dependence on glycolytic metabolism, and rapid accumulation of lactate during exercise. In comparison with lower limb exercises, upper limb exercises result in higher metabolic and ventilatory demands, as well as in a more intense sensation of dyspnea and greater fatigue. Because there are differences between the upper and lower limb muscles in terms of the morphological and functional adaptations in COPD patients, specific protocols for strength training and endurance should be developed and tested for the corresponding muscle groups

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common and nonspecific symptom associated with chronic health problems in the elderly. The modifications and adaptations of the aging process associated with complex and multidimensional nature of fatigue favors the interaction of multiple factors in the genesis of this phenomenon. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association of clinical, functional and inflammatory factors with muscle fatigue and self perceived fatigue in elderly women. METHODS: Participated in the study one hundred and thirty five community elderly women, all sedentary, with a mean age of 71.2±4.57. A structured questionnaire and functional testing were used to evaluate clinical and functional characteristics. Plasma concentrations of inflammatory mediators (IL-6 and sTNFR1) were measured by ELISA method. Muscle fatigue was measured by isokinetic dynamometer and self-perceived fatigue was measured by a visual analog scale. Statistical analysis was performed by multiple linear regression and Spearman correlation coefficient with statistical significance of 5%. Está bem estabelecido que, além do acometimento pulmonar, a DPOC apresenta consequências sistêmicas que podem convergir para a disfunção muscular periférica, com maior fadigabilidade muscular, menor tolerância ao exercício e menor sobrevida nesses pacientes. Tendo em vista as repercussões negativas da fadiga muscular precoce na DPOC, esta revisão teve como objetivo discutir os principais achados da literatura relacionados aos seus determinantes metabólicos e bioenergéticos e suas repercussões funcionais, bem como seus métodos de identificação e de quantificação. O substrato anatomofuncional da maior fadigabilidade muscular na DPOC parece incluir a redução dos níveis de fosfatos de alta energia, a redução da densidade mitocondrial, a lactacidemia precoce, o aumento da amônia sérica e a perfusão muscular reduzida. Essas alterações podem ser evidenciadas por falência de contração, redução da taxa de disparo das unidades motoras e maior recrutamento de unidades motoras numa dada atividade, exteriorizando-se funcionalmente por redução da força, potência e resistência musculares. Esta revisão mostra também que diversos tipos de regimes contráteis e protocolos têm sido utilizados com o intuito de detectar fadiga nessa população. A partir de tais conhecimentos, estratégias reabilitadoras podem ser traçadas visando o aumento da resistência à fadiga muscular nessa população. It has been well established that, in addition to the pulmonary involvement, COPD has systemic consequences that can lead to peripheral muscle dysfunction, with greater muscle fatigue, lower exercise tolerance and lower survival in these patients. In view of the negative repercussions of early muscle fatigue in COPD, the objective of this review was to discuss the principal findings in the literature on the metabolic and bioenergy determinants of muscle fatigue, its functional repercussions, as well as the methods for its identification and quantification. The anatomical and functional substrate of higher muscle fatigue in COPD appears to include lower levels of high-energy phosphates, lower mitochondrial density, early lactacidemia, higher serum ammonia and reduced muscle perfusion. These alterations can be revealed by contraction failure, decreased firing rates of motor units and increased recruitment of motor units in a given activity, which can be functionally detected by a reduction in muscle strength, power and endurance. This review article also shows that various types of muscle contraction regimens and protocols have been used in order to detect muscle fatigue in this population. With this understanding, rehabilitation strategies can be developed in order to improve the resistance to muscle fatigue in this population.

Objective To investigate the effects of low intensity laser (660nm), on the surae triceps muscle fatigue and power, during vertical jump in sedentary individuals, in addition to delayed onset muscle soreness. Methods We included 22 sedentary volunteers in the study, who were divided into three groups: G1 (n=8) without performing low intensity laser (control); G2 (n=7) subjected to 6 days of low intensity laser applications; and G3 (n=7) subjected to 10 days of low intensity laser applications. All subjects were evaluated by means of six evaluations of vertical jumps lasting 60 seconds each. In G2 and G3, laser applications in eight points, uniformly distributed directly to the skin in the region of the triceps surae were performed. Another variable analyzed was the delayed onset muscle soreness using the Visual Analog Scale of Pain. Results There was no significant difference in fatigue and mechanical power. In the evaluation of delayed onset muscle soreness, there was significant difference, being the first evaluation higher than the others. Conclusion The low intensity laser on the triceps surae, in sedentary individuals, had no significant effects on the variables evaluated. Objetivo Verificar os efeitos do laser de baixa potência (660nm) sobre o tríceps sural na fadiga muscular e na potência, durante o salto vertical, em indivíduos sedentários, além da dor muscular de início tardio. Métodos Foram inclusos no estudo 22 voluntários sedentários, divididos em três grupos: G1 (n=8), sem realização de laser de baixa potência (controle); G2 (n=7), submetido a 6 dias de aplicações de laser de baixa potência; e G3 (n=7), submetido a 10 dias de aplicações de laser de baixa potência. Todos os indivíduos foram avaliados por meio de seis avaliações de saltos verticais, com duração de 60 segundos cada. No G2 e G3, foram realizadas aplicações de laser em oito pontos, distribuídos uniformemente e diretamente na pele, na região de do tríceps sural. Outra variável analisada foi a dor muscular de início tardia, utilizando a Escala Visual Analógica de Dor. Resultados Não houve diferença significativa na fadiga e na potência mecânica. Na avaliação da dor muscular tardia, houve diferença significativa, sendo a primeira avaliação maior do que as demais avaliações. Conclusão A aplicação do laser de baixa potência no tríceps sural, em indivíduos sedentários, não apresentou efeitos significativos nas variáveis avaliadas.

Mesmo sabendo que a entorse é multifatorial, tal característica gera a hipótese que a fadiga muscular possa ser um fator predisponente para o desenvolvimento da lesão.OBJETIVO: a presente investigação propõe o estudo da resposta reflexa dos músculos fibular curto e longo em condições de fadiga.MÉTODOS: participaram do estudo 10 voluntárias do sexo feminino, sem histórico de entorse do tornozelo, fisicamente ativas. Utilizou-se uma plataforma simuladora da entorse em inversão do tornozelo, na qual ambos os pés das voluntárias foram fixados e somente abaixo do fixador do pé direito encontrava-se um transdutor de força. Para a indução da fadiga, inicialmente foi registrada a contração isométrica voluntária máxima (CIVM) em eversão. Durante a indução, as voluntárias foram orientadas a manter 70% da CIVM. No momento em que a força aplicada era menor que 60% da CIVM o protocolo era interrompido e as voluntárias imediatamente posicionadas sobre a plataforma simuladora. Antes e após a fadiga foram realizadas 10 simulações da entorse em ambos os tornozelos, de forma aleatória, e simultaneamente, o sinal eletromiográfico foi registrado. A análise, no domínio do tempo, contemplou o estudo da latência e da amplitude do sinal.RESULTADOS: após a fadiga não houve alteração da latência, no entanto, ocorreu uma redução da amplitude do sinal. A queda da amplitude do sinal pode ser considerada uma resposta ao processo de fadiga. Esse decréscimo é um indicativo da diminuição da capacidade de recrutamento das unidades motoras decorrentes das alterações do input neural que chega ao músculo.CONCLUSÃO: a fadiga muscular diminui a amplitude da resposta dos músculos eversores após a entorse do tornozelo. INTRODUCTION: inversion ankle sprain is one of the most common sports injuries and it often occurs in the final phase of a training or competition. Although sprain is multifactorial, this characteristic leads to the hypothesis that muscle fatigue can be a predisposing factor to injury.OBJECTIVE: the present study was set to investigate the neuromuscular response of the fibularis brevis and longus in conditions of fatigue.METHODS: the study included 10 physically active female participants with no history of ankle sprain. To simulate the inversion ankle sprain, we used a simulation platform in which participant's feet were attached and, underneath the right foot strap only, there was a transducer. To induce fatigue, we first recorded the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in eversion. During the induction, the participants were instructed to maintain 70% of MVIC. When strength fell below 60% of MVIC, the protocol was interrupted and the participants were immediately placed on the simulation platform. Before and after fatigue, we conducted 10 sprain simulations in both ankles, randomly decided and simultaneously, the electromyographic signal registered. In the time domain, latency and signal amplitude were analyzed.RESULTS: after fatigue, the latency did not change, however there was a reduction of the signal amplitude. The drop in amplitude can be considered a response to the process of fatigue. This decrease indicates a reduction in the ability to recruit motor units due to changes in the neural input that reaches the muscle.CONCLUSION: muscle fatigue reduces the amplitude of the response of the eversion muscles after ankle sprain. Aún sabiendo que el esguince es multifactorial, tal característica genera la hipótesis de que la fatiga muscular puede ser un factor de predisposición para el desarrollo de la lesión.OBJETIVO: la presente investigación propone el estudio de la respuesta refleja de los músculos fibular corto y largo en condiciones de fatiga.MÉTODOS: participaron en el estudio 10 voluntarias del sexo femenino sin historial de esguince de tobillo, físicamente activas. Se utilizó una plataforma simuladora del esguince en inversión del tobillo, en la que ambos pies de las voluntarias fueron fijados y solamente debajo del fijador del pie derecho se encontraba un transductor de fuerza. Para inducción de la fatiga inicialmente fue registrada la contracción isométrica voluntaria máxima (CIVM) en eversión. Durante la inducción las voluntarias fueron orientadas a mantener 70% de la CIVM. En el momento en que la fuerza aplicada era menor a 60% de la CIVM el protocolo era interrumpido y las voluntarias inmediatamente posicionadas sobre la plataforma simuladora. Antes y después de la fatiga fueron realizadas diez simulaciones de esguince bilateralmente de forma aleatoria y simultáneamente registrada la señal electromiográfica. El análisis, en el dominio del tiempo, contempló el estudio de la latencia y de la amplitud de la señal.RESULTADOS: después de la fatiga no hubo alteración de la latencia, sin embargo ocurrió reducción de la amplitud de la señal. La caída de la amplitud de la señal puede ser considerada una respuesta al proceso de fatiga. OBJECTIVE: To analyze strength and integrated electromyography (IEMG) data in order to determine the neuromuscular efficiency (NME) of the vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (BF) muscles in patients with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, during the preoperative and postoperative periods; and to compare the injured limb at these two times, using the non-operated limb as a control.METHODS: EMG data and BF and VL strength data were collected during three maximum isometric contractions in knee flexion and extension movements. The assessment protocol was applied before the operation and two months after the operation, and the NME of the BF and VL muscles was obtained.RESULTS: There was no difference in the NME of the VL muscle from before to after the operation. On the other hand, the NME of the BF in the non-operated limb was found to have increased, two months after the surgery.CONCLUSIONS: The NME provides a good estimate of muscle function because it is directly related to muscle strength and capacity for activation. However, the results indicated that two months after the ACL reconstruction procedure, at the time when loading in the open kinetic chain within rehabilitation protocols is usually started, the neuromuscular efficiency of the VL and BF had still not been reestablished. OBJETIVO: Analisar a força e a integral da eletromiografia (IEMG) para obter a eficiência neuromuscular (ENM) dos músculos vasto lateral (VL) e bíceps femoral (BF) em pacientes com lesão de ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA) nas fases pré-operatória e pós-operatória, comparar o membro lesionado nos dois momentos e usar o membro não cirúrgico como controle.MÉTODOS: Foi feita a coleta de dados da EMG e da força de BF e VL durante três contrações isométricas máximas nos movimentos de flexão e extensão do joelho. O protocolo de avaliação foi aplicado nos momentos pré e pós-operatório (dois meses após a cirurgia) e obteve-se a ENM dos músculos VL e BF.RESULTADOS: Não foi encontrada diferença na ENM do músculo VL entre os momentos pré e pós-cirúrgico. Por outro lado, houve aumento da ENM do BF no membro não cirúrgico dois meses após a cirurgia.CONCLUSÕES: A ENM fornece boa estimativa da função muscular por estar diretamente relacionada à força e à capacidade de ativação dos músculos. Entretanto, os resultados apontam que dois meses após o procedimento de reconstrução do LCA, quando normalmente são iniciadas cargas em cadeia cinética aberta nos protocolos de reabilitação, a eficiência neuromuscular do VL e BF ainda não está restabelecida.

Introduction Muscle fatigue is a phenomenon associated with physical work. It is common in endurance sports, physical fitness tests and daily activities. Some tests can be directly affected by the effect of peripheral muscle fatigue, including the handgrip strength (HGS) test, which is considered baseline measure for assessing the functionality of the hand. Objectives a) verify the effect of peripheral muscle fatigue (between trials) during the testing of HGS, with a 60-second recovery interval; b) to analyze whether there is a difference in considering the mean value obtained in three trials or the best result as the final result. Materials and methods The final sample comprised 1,279 men. We followed the standard methodology and used a hydraulic hand dynamometer. Results There were statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) in the dominant hand among all the trials: first (46.5 ± 8.6 Kgf), second (46.4 ± 8.5 Kgf) and third (46.1 ± 8.6 Kgf); and also in the non-dominant hand: first (44.9 ± 8.4 Kgf), second (44.5 ± 8.3 Kgf) and third (44.0 ± 8.3 Kgf). We also found statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) between the two ways of considering the final result. For the dominant hand, the mean of the three attempts was 46.3 ± 8.3 Kgf and the best result was 48.1 ± 8.5 Kgf, whereas for the non-dominant hand, these results were 44.5 ± 8.2 Kgf and 46.0 ± 8.2 kgf, respectively. Conclusion Peripheral muscle fatigue directly interferes in the final result. A significant reduction in strength levels occurs in course of the assessment. The best result is frequently obtained at the first trial, which indicates that the highest value obtained should be considered as the final result. Introdução A fadiga muscular é um fenômeno associado ao trabalho comum em esportes de resistência, testes físicos e em atividades diárias. Alguns testes podem ser diretamente afetados pelo efeito da fadiga muscular periférica, dentre estes a força de preensão manual (FPM) que é considerada a medida referência para avaliação da funcionalidade da mão. Objetivos a) verificar o efeito da fadiga muscular periférica, entre as tentativas, durante a realização do teste de FPM com intervalo de recuperação de 60 segundos; b) analisar a existência da diferença em considerar como resultado final o valor médio obtido nas três tentativas ou o melhor resultado. Materiais e métodos Foram medidos 1.279 homens seguindo-se a metodologia padrão e utilização de um dinamômetro hidráulico manual. Resultados Houve diferença estatística significativa (P < 0,05) na mão dominante entre todas as tentativas. Primeira (46,5 ± 8,6 Kgf), segunda (46,4 ± 8,5 Kgf), terceira (46,1 ± 8,6 Kgf) e, na mão não dominante entre todas as tentativas, primeira (44,9 ± 8,4 Kgf), segunda (44,5 ± 8,3 Kgf) e terceira (44,0 ± 8,3 Kgf), bem como foi observada diferença estatística significativa (P < 0,05) entre as duas formas de se considerar o resultado final. Na mão dominante a média das três tentativas foi de (46,3 ± 8,3 Kgf) e, considerando o melhor resultado (48,1 ± 8,5 Kgf), já na mão não dominante foram (44,5 ± 8,2 Kgf) e (46,0 ± 8,2 Kgf) respectivamente. Conclusão A fadiga muscular periférica interfere diretamente no resultado final, indicando redução significativa no decorrer da avaliação. O melhor resultado, frequentemente, é obtido na primeira tentativa, sendo indicado considerar como resultado final o maior valor obtido.

INTRODUÇÃO: Estudos têm demonstrado a efetividade do laser no infravermelho (IV) sobre a atividade musculoesquelética. Contudo, não foram observados estudos sobre os efeitos da radiação emitida por um LED (Light Emitting Diode) no IV sobre a atividade do músculo masseter (MM, importante músculo da mastigação), sendo este o objetivo do presente estudo. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo 10 voluntários, os quais foram analisados por eletromiografia (atividade muscular, força e tempo de fadiga) e nível de lactato sanguíneo (mmol/L) após terapia placebo, laser (GaAlAs, 780 nm) e LED (GaAlAs, 880 nm). Os sinais obtidos previamente antes de realizadas as terapias foram tidos como controle. Os parâmetros de irradiação (laser ou LED) foram: potência de saída de 0,02 W, densidade de energia de 4 J/cm², área do feixe de 0,2 cm². Foram irradiados 8 pontos sobre o MM, de forma perpendicular e transcutânea, com distância de 1 cm entre os pontos. RESULTADOS: A atividade muscular foi significativamente maior pós-terapia laser e LED em relação aos valores controle. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nos valores de força, tempos de fadiga e níveis de lactato sanguíneo pós-terapia placebo, laser ou LED, quando comparados aos valores controle. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados obtidos no presente estudo sugerem a otimização da atividade muscular com uso de terapia laser ou LED, sem causar efeitos colaterais, como a elevação de força e aumento dos níveis de lactato.

FUNDAMENTO: As consequências e os riscos do exercício físico contínuo por períodos prolongados não estão esclarecidos. OBJETIVO: Avaliar os efeitos do exercício prolongado em participantes de uma ultramaratona de 24 horas. MÉTODOS: Vinte corredores foram selecionados para avaliação, um dia antes e imediatamente após a prova em que os corredores devem percorrer a maior distância em 24 horas. Foram obtidos dados clínicos, laboratoriais e ecocardiográficos. RESULTADOS: A distância média percorrida foi de 140,3 ± 18,7 km. Os corredores apresentaram redução do peso corpóreo (p < 0,001) e da pressão arterial sistólica (p < 0,001) e diastólica (p = 0,004). As alterações hematológicas foram compatíveis com o estresse fisiológico. A concentração plasmática de creatinofosfoquinase (CPK) aumentou significativamente (163,4 ± 56,8 versus 2978,4 ± 1921,9 U/L; p < 0,001) e esteve inversamente correlacionada com a distância percorrida: os que correram maiores distâncias apresentaram níveis mais baixos de CPK (Pearson r = 0,69; p = 0,02). Após a corrida, dois corredores apresentaram discreta elevação de troponina T. Em um deles, houve queda concomitante na fração de ejeção (coronariopatia foi excluída subsequentemente). O ecocardiograma na avaliação basal mostrou hipertrofia de ventrículo esquerdo em um e aumento do volume atrial esquerdo em cinco corredores. Após a prova, houve redução na relação E/A (p < 0,01). CONCLUSÃO: O exercício físico prolongado está associado a alterações cardiovasculares e metabólicas. As alterações cardiológicas encontradas sugerem que o fenômeno de fadiga cardíaca pode ocorrer nessa modalidade de corrida. O efeito a longo prazo dessas alterações, com a manutenção da prática desse tipo de atividade, ainda é desconhecido. BACKGROUND: The consequences and risks of prolonged physical exercise are not well established. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of prolonged physical exercise on the participants of a 24-hour ultramarathon race. METHODS: Twenty male runners were selected for evaluation a day before and immediately after the race, where the athletes had to cover the most distance in 24 hours. Clinical, laboratory and echocardiographic data were obtained at both evaluations. RESULTS: Mean distance covered was 140.3 ± 18.7 km. Runners showed weight loss (p < 0.001) and decrease in systolic (p < 0.001) and diastolic (p = 0.004) blood pressure. Hematological changes were compatible with the physiological stress. Plasma levels of creatine phosphokinase strikingly increased post-race (163.4 ± 56.8 vs. 2978.4 ± 1921.9 U/L; p < 0.001) and was inversely correlated with distance covered: those who covered the longest distances showed the lowest CPK levels (Pearson r = 0.69, p = 0.02). After the race, 2 runners showed a slight increase in Troponin levels. One of them also had simultaneous decrease in left ventricular ejection fraction (coronary artery disease was subsequently ruled out). Basal echocardiography assessment had shown LV hypertrophy in one and increased left atrial volume in five runners. After the race, there was a decrease in E/A ratio (p < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Prolonged physical exercise is associated with metabolic and cardiovascular alterations. Cardiac abnormalities found in our study suggest that cardiac fatigue may occur in this specific race modality. The long-term effect of these alterations, while maintaining the routine practice of prolonged strenuous physical activity, is still unknown.

INTRODUÇÃO: São muito recorrentes as queixas de mulheres com desconforto na região lombar durante o uso de sapato de salto. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade eletromiográfica de músculos da perna e eretores da espinha associada a tipos de calçados e ao andar descalço, nos diferentes planos de locomoção, nas situações pré e pós-fadiga. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo observacional transversal, no qual foi utilizado uma amostra de conveniência com 15 mulheres jovens, com idades entre 18 e 35 anos, sedentárias. Os músculos analisados foram: tibial anterior, gastrocnêmio medial e lateral e eretores. A atividade muscular foi avaliada durante a marcha em superfície plana, subindo e descendo escada e rampa. Os calçados utilizados foram salto alto, salto baixo, tênis, chinelo, e também foi feita a avaliação sem o uso deles, ou seja, descalço. RESULTADOS: Os resultados da análise eletromiográfica mostrou que os músculos da perna tiveram maior atividade eletromiográfica pré-fadiga e os eretores, pós-fadiga dos membros inferiores, na maioria das condições e situações. CONCLUSÃO: Condições adaptativas associadas ao uso regular de salto alto foram amplamente questionadas em relação à incidência de lesões. Após fadiga de membros inferiores, houve declínio na atividade dos músculos da perna e aumento do recrutamento dos músculos eretores, justificado pela necessidade de maior estabilidade da coluna e da pelve durante a locomoção de mulheres jovens. INTRODUCTION: It is very common women's complaints of discomfort in the lumbar region, caused by the use of high heeled shoes. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the electromyographyc activity of the muscles of the leg and spine associated with different types of shoes and barefoot, in various plans of locomotion, before and after fatigue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, in which was used a sample of convenience with 15 young women, aged between 18 and 35 years, sedentary. The examined muscles were tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis and erector spinae. The muscular activity was assessed during locomotion on flat surface, up and down stairs and in an inclined surface. The shoes were high-heeled, small heeled, snickers, slipper, and it was also made an evaluation in barefoot. RESULTS: The results of electromyographyc analysis showed that the muscles of the leg had greater electromyographyc activity in the position of pre-fatigue of the lower limbs and erector spinae in the post-fatigue of the lower limbs, in most of the conditions and situations. CONCLUSION: Adaptive conditions associated with regular use of high heels has been widely questioned in relation to the incidence of injuries. In post-fatigue of the lower limbs, there was a decline in the activities of the muscles of the leg and increased recruitment of the erector muscles, justified by the need for greater stability of the spine and pelvis during the locomotion of young women.

OBJETIVOS: Verificar as respostas metabólicas, ventilatórias, cardiovasculares e de percepção de esforço entre o isotime de dois minutos do teste do degrau (TD2) e o teste do degrau de seis minutos (TD6) com o teste de sentar-se e levantar-se da cadeira de dois minutos (TSL) nos indivíduos com DPOC. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 11 homens com DPOC (71 ± 8 anos, VEF1 = 46,1 ± 15,2% previsto), clinicamente estáveis, por meio do TD6 e TSL associados à análise de gases e à coleta de lactato sanguíneo, realizadas em dias diferentes e não consecutivos. No TD2 e TD6, os indivíduos foram instruídos a subir e descer um degrau de 20 cm de altura o mais rápido possível. O mesmo foi recomendado no TSL, que foi realizado em uma cadeira de 46 cm de altura. RESULTADOS:Na análise intertestes não se observou diferença significativa nas variáveis metábolo-ventilatórias, cardiovasculares e Δdispneia no pico de ambos os testes, bem como no TD2. Quanto ao Δfrequκncia cardíaca e ao Δfadiga nos membros inferiores, constataram-se valores significantemente maiores para o TSL comparado ao TD2; e correlações positivas entre o consumo de oxigênio, Δfrequência cardíaca e os desempenhos no TD2 e TD6, entre os desempenhos no TD6 e TSL, e no TD2 com TSL. CONCLUSÃO:Os testes realizados apresentaram respostas metábolo-ventilatórias, cardiovasculares e dispneia similares; e o TD2 mostrou-se uma alternativa para avaliar as limitações funcionais dos indivíduos com DPOC de obstrução grave, proporcionando menor estresse cardiovascular e fadiga muscular se comparado ao TSL, pelas exigências metabólicas periféricas e ajustes posturais.

Objective: Obesity is a major public health problem leading to, among other things, reduced functional capacity. Moreover, obesity-related declines in functional capacity may be compounded by the detrimental consequences of menopause. The aim of this study was to understand the potential effects of excess body mass on measures of functional capacity in postmenopausal women. Methods: Forty-five postmenopausal women aged 50 to 60 years were divided into two groups according to body mass index (BMI): obese (BMI, Q30 kg/m 2 ; n = 19) and nonobese (BMI, 18.5-29.9 kg/m 2 ; n = 26). To determine clinical characteristics, body composition, bone mineral density, and maximal exercise testing was performed, and a 3-day dietary record was estimated. To assess quadriceps function, isokinetic exercise testing at 60- per second (quadriceps strength) and at 300- per second (quadriceps fatigue) was performed. Results: The absolute value of the peak torque was not significantly different between the groups; however, when the data were normalized by body mass and lean mass, significantly lower values were observed for obese women compared with those in the nonobese group (128% T 25% vs 155% T 24% and 224% T 38% vs 257% T 47%, P G 0.05). The fatigue index did not show any significant difference for either group; however, when the data were normalized by the body mass and lean mass, significantly lower values were observed for obese women (69% T 16% vs 93% T 18% and 120% T 25% vs. 135% T 23%, P G 0.01). Conclusions: Our results show that despite reduced muscle force, the combination of obesity and postmenopause may be associated with greater resistance to muscle fatigue.

Grande número de evidências tem sugerido a existência de uma rede de reflexos que se tornam hiperativos secundariamente a alterações músculo-esqueléticas que ocorrem na síndrome insuficiência cardíaca (IC). Estes, aliados aos reflexos cardiovasculares simpato-inibitórios, suprimidos na síndrome, podem contribuir para a intolerância ao exercício físico. A hiperativação dos sinais originados dos receptores localizados nos músculos esqueléticos (mecanoceptores - metaborreceptores) é uma hipótese proposta recentemente para explicar a origem dos sintomas de fadiga e dispneia e os efeitos benéficos do treinamento físico na síndrome da IC. Na IC, outras alterações nos sistemas de controle reflexo, que não são mutuamente exclusivos, contribuem para dispneia. Estimulação inapropriada dos barorreceptores arteriais com consequente falta de inibição da descarga do metaborreflexo muscular e quimiorreflexo carotídeo e aumento da vasoconstricção renal com liberação de angiotensina II pode também ser considerada. Apesar das alterações funcionais dos reflexos terem sido usadas de maneira independente para ilustrar a excitação simpática observada na IC, a interação entre esses reflexos em condições normais e patológicas, especialmente sua contribuição para o estado simpato-excitatório encontrado na IC, não tem sido amplamente estudados. Assim, o problema se ambos os receptores musculares (mecano e metaborreceptores) estão envolvidos na gênese da exacerbação do ergorreflexo observado na IC ainda fica a ser resolvido. Dessa forma, essa revisão tem por objetivo integrar os conhecimentos a respeito do mecano e metaborreflexo (ergorreflexo) na síndrome da insuficiência cardíaca bem como esclarecer a influência da terapêutica medicamentosa da IC no ergorreflexo. A large body of evidence has suggested the existence of a reflex network that becomes hyperactive secondary to musculoskeletal alterations that occur in heart failure (HF) syndrome. Together with sympathoinhibitory cardiovascular reflexes, suppressed in the presence of the syndrome, heart failure can contribute to physical exercise intolerance. The hyperactivation of signals originated from receptors located in skeletal muscles (mechanoreceptors - metaboreceptors) is a recently proposed hypothesis to explain the origin of fatigue and dyspnea symptoms in HF. In HF, other alterations in the reflex control system, which are not mutually exclusive, contribute to dyspnea. The inappropriate stimulation of the arterial baroreceptors, with the consequent lack of inhibition of the muscle metaboreflex and carotid chemoreflex unloading and the increase in the renal vasoconstriction with angiotensin II release can also be considered. Although the functional alterations of the reflexes were used independently to illustrate the sympathetic excitation observed in HF, the interaction between these reflexes under normal and pathological conditions, especially its contribution to the sympathoexcitatory state found in HF, has not been broadly investigated. Therefore, questions about a possible association between the muscle receptors (mechano and metaboreceptors) in the genesis of the ergoreflex exacerbation, observed in HF, remain. Thus, the objective of this review was to integrate the knowledge on the mechano and metaboreflex (ergoreflex) in HF syndrome, as well as to clarify the influence of HF drug therapy on the ergoreflex. Por isso, a avaliação da resistência isométrica desses músculos tem sido recomendada nessa população. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar e analisar objetivamente o comportamento da fadiga do músculo eretor da espinha em um teste de resistência isométrica realizado até a exaustão. METODOLOGIA: Nove sujeitos saudáveis realizaram o teste de Sorensen modificado com contrações em intensidades correspondentes a 5%, 10%, 15% e 20% da contração voluntária máxima. A fadiga muscular foi identificada pela análise do comportamento da frequência mediana (FM) em função do tempo. RESULTADOS: O tempo de resistência isométrica foi inversamente correlacionado com a intensidade da contração. Contudo, a intensidade da contração não demonstrou efeito sobre a taxa de declínio da FM. A fadiga muscular foi significante em todas as porções do músculo eretor da espinha. Comparações entre os músculos eretor da espinha direito e esquerdo não revelaram diferenças significantes, enquanto que comparações entre porções do músculo eretor da espinha localizadas em diferentes níveis lombares revelaram maiores níveis de fadiga em L4-L5 bilateralmente. CONCLUSÃO: A análise espectral do sinal eletromiográfico foi eficaz para idenficação da fadiga do músculo eretor da espinha. Também foi possível identificar diferenças funcionais entre as diferentes porções desse músculo. O conhecimento dessas particularidades permite intervir de forma mais específica na prevenção e reabilitação dos distúrbios da coluna lombar. INTRODUCTION: Excessive fatigability of the low back muscles is a common finding in low back pain patients. Therefore, the assessment of the isometric endurance of these muscles has been recommended in this population. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify and to analyze objectively the behavior of the erector spinae muscle fatigue in an isometric endurance test performed until exhaustion. METHOD: Nine healthy subjects performed a modified Sorensen test with contractions of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the maximal voluntary contraction. The muscle fatigue was identified for the analysis of the behavior of the median frequency (MF) over time. The endurance time was inversely correlated with the contraction intensity. However, the contraction intensity did not show effect on the rate of decline of the MF. The muscle fatigue was significant in all the portions of the erector spinae muscle. RESULTS: Comparisons between the erector spinae muscles from right and left side did not show significant differences, while that the comparisons between the portions of the erector spinae muscle localized at different vertebral levels showed higher fatigue levels at L4-L5 bilaterally. CONCLUSION: Thus, the spectral analysis of the electromyographic signal was effective for the identification of the erector spinae muscle fatigue. Also, it was possible to identify functional differences between the different portions of this muscle. The knowledge of these particularities allows managing in a more specific way the prevention e rehabilitation of the low back troubles. A fadiga muscular é uma nova área de pesquisa em laserterapia, com poucos estudos conduzidos. Embora a laserterapia de baixa potência (LBP) previamente ao exercício tenha apresentado resultados positivos no retardo da fadiga musculoesquelética, ainda não foi estudada utilizando-se a dinamometria isocinética para mensurar desempenho e fadiga muscular. Este estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos da LBP (655 nm, 50 mW, 2,4 J por ponto e 12 J de energia total) sobre o desempenho e fadiga muscular do músculo tibial anterior, utilizando dinamometria isocinética (30 repetições de contração concêntrica) em 14 indivíduos saudáveis sedentários do sexo masculino. Os voluntários foram avaliados ao efetuar 30 repetições isocinéticas de dorsiflexão de tornozelo à velocidade angular de 240°.seg-1. Os resultados mostram que, quando os voluntários foram tratados com LBP antes do exercício, os valores do pico de torque (30,91±5,86 N.m) foram significativamente superiores, comparados a três medições anteriores sem a aplicação de LBP (24,92±7,45 N.m, p

OBJETIVOS: Comparar o desempenho físico e as respostas obtidas nos testes de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6) e do degrau de seis minutos (TD6) entre adolescentes asmáticos e saudáveis e correlacionar o índice de massa corpórea (IMC), o nível de atividade física e as variáveis espirométricas com as variáveis obtidas nos testes. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 19 adolescentes asmáticos (GA) e 19 saudáveis (GS), com idades entre 11 e 15 anos, de ambos os sexos, por meio da espirometria, do TC6 e do TD6 e foi quantificado o nível de atividade física pelo Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física (IPAQ). RESULTADOS: No TD6, observaram-se menores valores de desempenho físico (TD6-T) e frequência cardíaca (FC) e maiores valores de fadiga de membros inferiores (MMII) no GA. No TC6, houve correlação positiva no GA da distância percorrida (DP) com o tempo de atividade intensa e da FC com o IMC e, no GS, da DP com a FC e com a frequência respiratória (FR). CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: A estimulação elétrica neuromuscular (EENM) é uma técnica bastante utilizada na área da reabilitação em fisioterapia, porém a instalação da fadiga ocorre de maneira mais rápida se comparada à contração voluntária. Na prática clínica, torna-se necessário monitorar a fadiga muscular em protocolos de EENM, visando adequar os parâmetros da corrente elétrica e prolongar o tempo de estimulação. OBJETIVOS: O objetivo deste estudo foi utilizar a mecanomiografia como meio de avaliação da fadiga muscular periférica durante a aplicação de um protocolo de EENM. MÉTODOS: Um sistema de aquisição de sinais mecanomiográficos (MMG) e um protocolo experimental foram desenvolvidos. Durante os ensaios in vivo com 10 voluntários, foram realizados testes de contração voluntária máxima (CVM) para extensão do joelho. Realizou-se uma fase de potencialização com contrações dinâmicas produzidas por EENM a 10% da CVM (100 Hz, 400 µm) no músculo quadríceps femoral, e o protocolo de EENM propriamente dito ocorreu a 30% da CVM (50 Hz, 400 µm). Simultaneamente, foram adquiridos os sinais de MMG RMS (amplitude) e MMG MPF (frequência) do músculo reto femoral e de torque (amplitude) para a extensão do joelho. RESULTADOS: A linha de tendência da MMG RMS foi descendente, indicando que a MMG RMS relaciona-se à amplitude do torque. Porém, a MMG MPF não teve uma boa correlação com o torque para este protocolo de EENM. CONCLUSÕES: A MMG pode ser aplicada simultaneamente à EENM, pois não ocorre interferência elétrica, e pode ser utilizada na realização de movimentos funcionais na contração muscular gerada por EENM. BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a widely used technique for rehabilitation in physical therapy, however it causes muscle fatigue more rapidly than does voluntary contraction. In clinical practice, it becomes necessary to monitor muscle fatigue during NMES protocols to adjust the parameters of electrical current stimulation and, thus, increase stimulation time. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to use mechanomyography (MMG) as a means of evaluating peripheral muscle fatigue during the execution of an NMES protocol. METHODS: An MMG signal acquisition system and an experimental protocol were developed. During in vivo tests, 10 participants performed maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) for knee extension. A maximization phase was conducted with dynamic contractions generated by NMES at 10% of MVC (100 Hz, 400 µs) on the quadriceps muscle, and the main NMES protocol occurred at 30% of MVC (50 Hz, 400 µs). Simultaneously, MMG RMS (amplitude) and MMG MPF (frequency) signals of the rectus femoris and the knee extension torque were acquired. RESULTS: The tendency line of the MMG RMS was descendant, indicating that MMG RMS correlates with torque amplitude. However, MMG MPF did not show a significant correlation with torque for the present NMES protocol. CONCLUSIONS: MMG is a technique that can be simultaneously applied to NMES because there is no electrical interference and it can be used during functional movements in the NMES-generated muscle contraction. O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a viabilidade da aplicação do sinal EMG, através de sua análise no domínio da freqüência, como parâmetro para determinação e diferenciação no comportamento da fadiga muscular localizada. Dois grupos de sujeitos, um caracterizado como atletas (n =12) e outro como sedentários (n =12), foram submetidos a análises baseadas em procedimentos executados em três diferentes situações experimentais, todos envolvendo a modalidade de exercício isométrico: i) teste máximo para determinação da contração isométrica voluntária máxima (CIVM); ii) teste de fadiga, sustentado por 35 seg. a 80% da CIVM; iii) teste de recuperação, sustentado por 10 seg. a 80% da CIVM; neste ultimo foi monitorado o comportamento da Fmed nos três primeiros (Fmedi) e três últimos segundos (Fmedf) do sinal EMG no músculo tibial anterior durante o teste de fadiga. Durante os 10 segundos do teste de recuperação foi calculada a Fmed referente a todo o período (Fmedr). parâmetro utilizado no cálculo do índice de recuperação muscular (IRM). Os resultados apontam que a Fmedf apresentou valor menor em relação à Fmedi em ambos os grupos (p < 0,05). Quando comparado com o grupo de sedentários, o grupo de atletas apresentou valores maiores de Fmedi e Fmedf (p < 0,05). O valor médio e desvio-padrão do IRM para o grupo de atletas foram de 62,1% ± 28,7 e, para o grupo de sedentários, de 55,2% ± 27,8 (p > 0,05). Dessa forma, os resultados apresentados neste estudo permitem inferir a viabilidade na aplicação de parâmetros no domínio da freqüência do sinal EMG para a determinação e diferenciação do comportamento da fadiga muscular localizada. Although the analysis in the frequency domain of the Electromyographic Signal (EMG) has been used in the characterization of the localized muscular fatigue process, its application, specifically the Median Frequency (MF), is rarely explored in sports. The objective of this study was to verify the viability of the EMG signal application, through its frequency domain analysis, as a parameter for determination and differentiation of the behavior of localized muscle fatigue. Two groups of subjects, one characterized as athletes (n = 12) and the other as sedentary (n = 12), were submitted to analysis based on procedures from three different experimental situations, all involving isometric exercise modality: i) maximum test for determination of the Maximum Voluntary Isometric Contraction (MVIC); ii) fatigue test, 35 sec. sustained load of 80% of MVIC; iii) recovery test, 10 sec. sustained load of 80% of MVIC. In the latter, the MF behavior in the three first (Fmedi) and three last (Fmedf) seconds of the EMG signal of tibialis anterior muscle during the fatigue test have been monitored. During the 10 seconds of the recovery test, MF was calculated regarding the whole period (Fmedr); this parameter was used to calculate the Muscular Recovery Index (MRI). The results showed that Fmedf presented lower value in relation to Fmedi in both groups (p < 0.05). Additionally, the Fmedi and Fmedf values for the athlete group were higher in comparison to the sedentary group (p < 0.05). The MRI mean value and standard deviation for the athlete group were 62.1% ± 28.7 and for the sedentary group was 55.2% ± 27.8 (p > 0.05). Therefore, the results presented in this study allow inferring the viability in the application of the frequency domain parameters of the EMG signal for the determination and differentiation of localized muscle fatigue behavior. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar o efeito do tempo de execução, da intensidade da carga e do tipo de contração na atividade eletromiográfica do músculo longuíssimo do tórax bilateralmente, durante a execução do exercício rosca bíceps. Dez voluntários saudáveis executaram o exercício até à exaustão com 25%, 35% e 45% da carga máxima, em três dias diferentes, sendo uma carga por dia. Foram analisadas a root mean square (RMS) e o slope a cada 10% do tempo total. Os resultados mostraram aumento progressivo na RMS com o tempo a 25% e 35% da carga máxima, com aumentos significativos a partir de 80% do tempo de execução. Houve efeito da intensidade da carga nas contrações concêntricas, predominantemente entre 25% e 45% nas diferentes porcentagens de tempo. Ao analisar os tipos de contração observa-se que a RMS nas contrações concêntricas apresenta-se maior que nas contrações excêntricas, predominantemente na carga de 45% para ambos os músculos. As comparações dos valores de slope indicam pequeno efeito da carga e tipo de contração. Estes resultados permitem concluir que a execução do exercício rosca bíceps aumenta a atividade eletromiográfica dos músculos longuíssimos do tórax, principalmente durante movimentos concêntricos dos cotovelos a partir dos 80% do tempo de execução The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of execution time, load level and contraction type in the electromyographic activity of longissimus thoracis muscle bilaterally, during the execution of the biceps curl exercise. Ten healthy subjects performed the exercise until exhaustion with 25%, 35% and 45% of one repetition maximum (RM), in three different days. Root mean square and slope were analyzed in each 10% of total time. Results showed a progressive increase in electromyographic activity with time, at 25% and 35% of 1RM with significant increases in the electromyographic activity beginning at 80% of execution time. The effect of load level in the activity of longissimus thoracis muscles occurred in the concentric phase between 25% and 45% of RM. There was a predominantly effect of contraction type at 45% of 1-RM for both muscles, and was found a small effect of contraction type for slope values. These results allow to conclude that the performance of biceps curl exercise increases the electromyographic activity of longissimus thoracis muscles during the concentric elbow movements and at 80% of execution time.

OBJETIVO: Com a hipótese de que contrair e manter a contração é mais importante que simplesmente contrair, mesmo com pico momentaneamente elevado de pressão, analisou-se a capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária do canal anal com o intuito de quantificar a função esfincteriana relativa à continência fecal. MATERIAL E MÉTODOS: Submeteram-se a exame manométrico anorretal 72 pacientes (56 mulheres) portadores de incontinência fecal de vários graus e 15 (9 mulheres) indivíduos continentes (normais), avaliando-se a pressão média de repouso, a pressão máxima de contração voluntária e a capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária. RESULTADOS: Os indivíduos continentes apresentaram valores normais de pressão média de repouso e de pressão máxima de contração voluntária, além de adequada capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária. Os pacientes incontinentes apresentaram pressão média de repouso e pressão máxima de contração voluntária com valores pressóricos normais ou abaixo do normal e perfil semelhante de capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária, ou seja, moderada na fase inicial e ruim nas fases intermediária e final, com queda da mesma superior a 35% em 78% dos pacientes. A pressão máxima de contração voluntária apresenta excelente especificidade (100%) porém, sensibilidade baixa (46%) para incontinência fecal. Comparativamente, a capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária apresenta elevadas especificidade (93%) e sensibilidade (78%) para incontinência fecal. Embora a pressão máxima de contração voluntária não indique falso-positivos, apresenta 72% de falso-negativos. A probabilidade deste fato acontecer com a medida de capacidade de sustentação da pressão de contração voluntária é, praticamente, 20% menor, valor estatisticamente significativo. CONCLUSÃO: O indicativo de função esfincteriana é melhor analisado pela capacidade de sustentação. A capacidade de sustentação traduz com mais exatidão, a capacidade funcional do canal anal em relação à continência voluntária, sendo isoladamente, melhor que a pressão máxima de contração voluntária. BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that the maximum squeeze pressure and the mean resting pressure do not reflect the true clinical situation of patients having fecal incontinence, as well as the functional status of the anal canal. Furthermore, a wrong diagnosis could be obtained and therefore misleading to a not effective treatment. AIM: Under the hypothesis that squeezing and sustaining the anal canal contraction is more important than the maximum squeeze pressure, the capacity to sustain the squeeze pressure of the anal canal was analyzed aiming to quantify the sphincteric function. METHODS: Seventy-two patients having fecal incontinence in different degrees (56 female) and 15 normal individuals (9 female) were submitted to anorectal manometry to measure the mean resting pressure, the maximum voluntary squeeze pressure and the capacity to sustain the squeeze pressure. RESULTS: Normal individuals had normal values of mean resting pressure and maximum squeeze pressure, and adequate capacity to sustain the squeeze pressure of the canal anal. Incontinent patients had mean resting pressure and maximum squeeze pressure with normal or below normal pressoric values and similar profile of capacity to sustain which was moderate in the initial phase and worse in the intermediate and final phases, with decreasing of the capacity to sustain more than 35% in 78% of the patients. The maximum squeeze pressure presented excellent specificity (100%), but low sensitivity (46%) for fecal incontinence. Comparatively, the squeeze pressure presented high specificity (93%) and high sensitivity (78%) for fecal incontinence. Although the maximum squeeze pressure did not indicate false positive, it presented a 72% false negative. The probability of this event to happen with the capacity to sustain measure is 20% lower, and it was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Sphincteric function can be better analyzed by using the capacity to sustain the squeeze pressure. capacity to sustain indicates more precisely the functional capacity of the anal canal in relation to voluntary continence, and it is better than maximum squeeze pressure as an isolated index. One of the problems that most concerns the elderly population is the falling, which can be caused by muscle fatigue. The objective of this study was to compare median electromyographic frequency values for the vastus lateralis muscle and the lateral portion of the gastrocnemius muscle (as parameters of electromyographic fatigue) in elderly people with and without a history of falls. A total of 20 healthy, physically active, elderly women who had or had not suffered falls were enrolled on the study. Median electromyographic signal frequencies were analyzed for the vastus lateralis muscle and the lateral portion of the gastrocnemius muscle in isometric contraction. ANOVA and Student's t test were used for comparisons, to a cutoff of p ≤ 0.05. Median frequencies for the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscles were both higher in the group with a history of falling, but without statistical significance. It was also observed that the rate of decline in median frequency was greater in the group with a history of falling. It can be concluded that elderly people with a history of falling have a greater tendency to fatigue of the gastrocnemius and vastus lateralis muscles than their peers with no history of falling.

Introduction: Muscular fatigue during voluntary muscle contractions is a complex and multifactorial phenomenon associated with central changes and adaptations of the neuromuscular system. Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the changes in both peak torque and hematological parameters in active and inactive healthy subjects following a muscular fatigue protocol. Methods: Twenty-one healthy adult males performed a muscle fatigue protocol (10 sets, 10 repetitions of knee extension at 75% of the maximal isometric torque (MIT), 120º s-1 and 40 seconds of rest). Hematocrit (Ht), red blood cells (RBC) and leukocytes (L) analysis were evaluated before (B) and after (A) a fatigue test. Results: The inactive group presented impairment only in concentric muscular action of -41±4% in relation to the active (-23±3%) group. No differences were found in hematological parameters in inactive group (Ht, B: 45.00±0.01 vs. A: 47.00±0.01; RBC, B: 442±40 vs. A: 487±41; L, B: 7,565±2,878 vs. A: 8,015±4,224) and the active group (Ht, B: 45.00±0.63 vs. A: 47.00±0.01; RBC, B: 477±30 vs. A: 559±37; L, B: 6,418±3,557 vs. A: 6,632±4,460). Conclusion: Differences were found only in concentric actions between groups. Additionally, there were no relationships found in hematological parameters between groups. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar as alterações do pico de torque e dos parâmetros hematológicos em indivíduos saudáveis ativos e inativos depois de realizar um protocolo de fadiga muscular. Métodos: Vinte e um adultos saudáveis do sexo masculino realizaram um protocolo de fadiga muscular (10 séries, 10 repetições de extensão do joelho a 75% do torque isométrico máximo (TIM) a 120ºs-1 e 40 segundos de repouso).
