Growth failure is a hallmark in children suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). It is most pronounced in children with congenital CKD requiring dialysis treatment. Optimal conservative management including adequate nutrition and growth hormone treatment, as well as early (preemptive) transplantation, is mandatory in order to reduce height deficit before transplantation. After transplantation the use of efficacious immunosuppressive strategies for an optimized graft function and early withdrawal, or even complete avoidance, of steroids are required to improve final height.
