This paper presents the development of an intelligent bicycle system with automatic gear shifting based on the user’s physiological information and environment sensing. The sensor data are collected during the ride, uploaded to the cloud database, and analyzed using random forest to derive the appropriate riding requirement. Our proposed technique performs the automatic gear shifting operation using inexpensive sensor components and embedded system development boards. The gear shifting module is designed and installed as an external device for the off-the-shelf bicycle, without the need to dismantle or modify the body structure. A bicycle riding specific online management interface is developed for web access and administration. It allows the cloud data being displayed and let users acquire and understand their riding behaviors. The experiments and evaluation in the outdoor environment have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed intelligent gear shifting system.

An important area for applying self‐adaptation that emerged around 2010 is the Internet‐of‐Things (IoT). This chapter introduces an IoT application for building security monitoring, called DeltaIoT. DeltaIoT consists of a collection of 15 nodes that are connected through a wireless network. It uses multi‐hop wireless communication and offers a management interface for system operators to collect data about the network and set the network parameters. The chapter considers two primary types of uncertainty in DeltaIoT: network interference and noise; and fluctuating traffic load. It presents the quality requirements for DeltaIoT defined by the stakeholders. The key problem of DeltaIoT is how to ensure the quality requirements of the system regardless of the uncertainties in the IoT network caused by network interference and the fluctuating traffic load of packets. A typical approach used in practice to deal with such uncertainties in IoT applications is to over‐provision the network.

As the complexity of Internet of Things (IoT) systems increases, a large variety of tools and technologies for IoT management are making their way into both research setups and the market. IoT management solutions must consider the resource restrictions of embedded devices, as well as their heterogeneity and network dynamics. With these in mind, the Internet Engineering Task Force developed several standards targeting the integration and interoperation of heterogeneous devices, such as the Representational State Transfer Configuration Protocol (RESTCONF) or the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) Management Interface. Concurrently, the Open Mobile Alliance developed the Lightweight Machine-to-Machine protocol, for IoT device management. This paper provides a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of IoT management technologies, frameworks and protocols. Also, it proposes a taxonomy for IoT devices management. In addition to presenting the various solutions, the paper provides comparative views, standardization timeline, and market analysis. The presented analysis ranges from traditional network management protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol, to the newest IoT management and configuration protocols, such as CoAP Management Interface and Lightweight Machine-to-Machine protocols. Moreover, this survey identifies remaining challenges and solutions offered by recent management protocols, not covered by previous surveys.

With the rapid development of the stereo garage, there are plenty of security problems appeared in stereo garage. The monitoring and management system of the stereo garage has attracted more and more attention. A cloud monitoring and management system for stereo garage is designed based on Web technology, which collects real-time data from the intelligent controller of the stereo garage, stores them in the cloud database. History and real-time data are studied to complete the functions of garage overview, real-time video monitoring, fault management, garage management, and system management. Deep confidence networks are proposed to conduct fault diagnosis for stereo garage, and the results are sent to the management interface of cloud portal (APP and website) for remote management. Test results show that the management efficiency of the stereo garage is significantly improved. The system guarantees the safe and reliable work of the stereo garage. It achieves better performance especially in the remote management and fault diagnosis.

Cyber attacks against the web management interface of Internet of Things (IoT) devices often have serious consequences. Current research uses fuzzing technologies to test the web interfaces of IoT devices. These IoT fuzzers generate messages (a test case sent from the client to the server to test its functionality) without considering their dependency, which is unlikely to bypass the early check of the server. These invalid test cases significantly reduce the efficiency of fuzzing. To overcome this problem, we propose a stateful message generation (SMG) mechanism for IoT web fuzzing. SMG addresses two problems in IoT fuzzing. First, we retrieve the message dependency by using web front-end analysis and status analysis. These dependent messages, which can easily bypass the server check, are used as a valid seed. Second, we adopt a multi-message seed format to preserve the dependency of the messages when mutating the seed to get a valid test case, so that the test case can bypass the state check of the server to make a valid test. Message dependency preservation is implemented by our proposed parameter mutation and structural mutation methods. We implement SMG in our IoT fuzzer, SIoTFuzzer, which applies IoT firmware on the latest Linux-based simulation tool, FirmAE. We test nine IoT devices including a router and an IP camera and adopt a vulnerability detection mechanism. Our evaluation results show that (1) SIoTFuzzer is capable of finding real-world vulnerabilities in IoT devices, (2) our SMG is effective as it enables Boofuzz (a popular protocol fuzzer) to find command injection and cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities, and (3) compared to FirmFuzz, SIoTFuzzer found all the vulnerabilities in our benchmarks, while FirmFuzz found only four—the efficiency of our tool increased by 20.57% on average.

Water being an essential commodity is stored at several locations such as buildings, offices domestic households, hospitals smart homes and specifically in industries in tanks. Any place where individuals live and carry out life processes, water plays a major role. Ensuring the proper usage and non-wastage of water is an obligation on every individual. This water is generally used for cleaning, daily use, and surgical instruments, sanitizing in the case of the medical field, manufacturing products, and even cooling of heavy machinery. Such large-scale applications, especially in industries like dairy, wastewater disposal, manufacturing, and food processing, impose documenting the levels of water from various tanks to keep track of the water levels used, cost usage, and generate warnings in the occurrence of any water wastage. This necessitates a sophisticated user interface that is both interactive and effective, for both the industrialists and the labour force. This project puts forth a solution to this stipulation. It consists of a front panel that shows each of the water monitoring system's controls and indicators, a report generation system, and a cloud server that incorporates the entire industrial monitoring system allowing it to be accessed remotely from anywhere on the planet. The framework is built with a graphical programming tool that employs function blocks as well as API keys to connect the cloud to the user interface. LabVIEW is a powerful tool for implementing this device on a desktop or in an industrial water management interface. LabVIEW is a versatile platform that can be used for real-time applications and used in combination with numerous high-quality industrial equipment. The framework of this project is configured to take into account the date, period, and consumption hours with a daily and monthly overview of the different locations of the tanks, and is interpreted and extracted in a LabVIEW VI based on the information requested by the user. A report is produced for the entire time period and records the data over a month. In addition to this function, the device can be remotely supervised through the cloud, and the overflow of the water sends warnings to the user based on the threshold set to avoid excessive loss of water. According to estimates, introducing such a water management scheme has supported industries and households in minimizing their water use, and decreasing costs by three times, making it efficient for the owners, and the government while also ensuring environmental sustainability.

The virtual customer premises equipment (VCPE) is a virtual Computing platform, capable of to host simultaneous and dynamically provisioned virtual network functions (VNFs), the VCPE has become an important element in SD-WAN and Edge Computing. Notwithstanding the SDWAN points to new management solutions (such as, gRPC-Network Management Interface, or RestConf), the basic management tasks, namely monitoring, and simple configuration, still the same. In this interim of coexistence between traditional WAN and SD-WAN, the maturity, the past investments, and dominance of Internet management solutions, suggest that it would be quite interesting for the operators to extend their legacy Internet management solutions till VCPE and SD-WAN get their maturity. This paper presents the DynagentX, a VCPE internal management instrumentation’s architecture, aiming to adapt the Internet management framework to the SD-WAN, and edge computing scenario, focusing the VCPE. In this work I show results that substantiate the proposal feasibility, performance, and security.

This paper introduces the design and implementation of international intelligent hospital information system. The Internet and digitization have brought about disruptive changes in many industries, including health care. System through the investigation into the hospital after get the user requirements, and use the core Asp.net MVC framework and the Entity framework Entity framework developed, finally through the system test, for the hospital information management provides a visual management interface, easy to use and manage the basic information of the hospital patients, and on the stages in the medical activities of data acquisition, storage, processing, summarizing, form all sorts of information data processing, the desired goal.

With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), it has been widely deployed. As many embedded devices are connected to the network and massive amounts of security-sensitive data are stored in these devices, embedded devices in IoT have become the target of attackers. The trusted computing is a key technology to guarantee the security and trustworthiness of devices’ execution environment. This paper focuses on security problems on IoT devices, and proposes a security architecture for IoT devices based on the trusted computing technology. This paper implements a security management system for IoT devices, which can perform integrity measurement, real-time monitoring and security management for embedded applications, providing a safe and reliable execution environment and whitelist-based security protection for IoT devices. This paper also designs and implements an embedded security protection system based on trusted computing technology, containing a measurement and control component in the kernel and a remote graphical management interface for administrators. The kernel layer enforces the integrity measurement and control of the embedded application on the device. The graphical management interface communicates with the remote embedded device through the TCP/IP protocol, and provides a feature-rich and user-friendly interaction interface. It implements functions such as knowledge base scanning, whitelist management, log management, security policy management, and cryptographic algorithm performance testing.

Real-time traffic video streaming, such as roadside surveillance and aerial video, has been widely used in traffic monitoring nowadays. However, most of the traditional traffic data collection methods lack mobility that can only collect macroscopic data. In this paper, an intelligent traffic monitoring system based on an open source cooperative platform called SAGE2 was developed. Based on the integrated big screen TV wall of SAGE2, a map-based aerial traffic video streaming management interface was designed. In the image pre-processing section, it provides functions such as lens distortion removal, top view projection transforms, and video stabilization; simulate video streaming to provide instant and long-term micro-flow data collection. Micro-traffic flow data provides high-resolution information both in time and space which can be used to analyze the driving behavior of individuals and the public. Combined with the lane level map, it can provide a variety of visual vehicle flow presentations, such as intersection traffic distribution that can also be used to develop an innovative application in the future.

The vision of self-managing software systems was proposed in the past two decades. We argue that to be able to realize such vision, a suitable machine consciousness computational model must be incorporated into the software design, as it will be responsible for all cognition, thinking, learning, planning, and decision making tasks. Currently, there exist many general computational models for machine consciousness that could be adopted. They differ in their complexity and their definition of what consciousness is. Therefore, in this paper, we propose to offer machine consciousness as a service (MCaaS). This enables any software system to become “self-managing” by loosely coupling itself with the MCaaS service via a suitable management interface. We propose a roadmap for building such MCaaS service as a composite web service, adopting the Starzyk–Prasad machine consciousness computational model.

Heart failure is long-lasting and progressive, i.e., life-threatening, and leads to death. The patients with Heart Failure (HF) are subjected to medical observation for their remaining days. In this paper, we have presented a Medical Decision Support System (MDSS) for the examination of Heart Failure patients for providing various outputs such as HF Criticality Assessment, HF type prediction and a management interface that compares with different patient reports. The proposed system composed of a portion of Intelligent Core and one HF special-purpose management tool. The management tool offers the function to act as an interface the usage of Artificial Intelligence and its training. We followed a Machine Learning (ML) method to implement smart intelligent roles. Here we have related the performance of a system with fuzzy rules that are produced inherently, neural networks, Random Forest algorithm, and Support Vector Machine (SVM) for analyzing our database. Comparison of HF Criticality Assessment and Type predictions are evaluated by using Random Forest Algorithm. The management tool permits the cardiologist to reside on a supervised database that is appropriate for Machine Learning during his daily consultation. The Machine Learning system automatically provides a readable output based on the condition of the patient that can be understandable by other doctors and even nurses.

This paper presents an IntelliBike with automatic shifting based on the riding condition. It is able to collect and transmit multiple sensor data to the cloud database, and the real-time sensor information is used to analyze for an appropriate riding state through random forest. Our technique performs automatic gear shifting using inexpensive sensor components and embedded system development board, which is not available in current expensive electronic shifting systems. The function and the installation of the external components can be carried out on the off-the-shelf bicycle with a shifting line, without the need to dismantle or modify the basic equipment. The system also includes an IntelliBike-specific online management interface that allows all cloud data to be displayed and let users access and understand their riding conditions.

In this work, the database was designed and implemented in accordance with the requirements of the relational model, which ensures the storage and collective access to the information of the auto-filling system and CMS WordPress data. Algorithms of system functioning were developed, the order of interaction of classes during program code execution was determined, as a result of which the application was implemented. Template Method architectural pattern was chosen to implement the web-based automatic content filling system. The following tools and technologies were selected to create the software package HTML markup language for HTML documents; programming language PHP; MySQL database management environment; Apache web server; the OpenServer package. The algorithms of the basic processes of content filling automation were considered and the interaction of the system classes during the processes of parsing, filtering and storing of information were analyzed. The developed system does not require specialized hardware, additional settings and deployment tools other than the standard ones for such plugins. This application is mostly for the site administrator and does not have user interface. That is why the features of the plugin automation system configuration interface; RSS feeds view and management interface, as well as the RSS feed configuration interface are described in detail. In the future, this system can be improved by introducing new functionality and improving the algorithm for reading data.

In the paper, we present the framework to offload VNF's data plane to the cloud infrastructure by leveraging the capabilities of P4. This approach allows tenants to run data plane functions directly on the programmable switches. Moreover, we propose the P4-based VNF offloading management interface as the extension to the DPPx framework - the target-independent P4 plugin for OpenStack.

Scaling up the software system on service robots increases the maintenance burden of developers and the risk of resource contention of the computer embedded on robots. As a result, developers spend much time on configuring, deploying, and monitoring the robot software system; robots may utilize significant computer resources when all software processes are running. We present Rorg, a Linux container-based scheme to manage, schedule, and monitor software components on service robots. Although Linux containers are already widely-used in cloud environments, this technique is challenging to efficiently adopt in service robot systems due to multi-tasking, resource constraints and performance requirements. To pave the way of Linux containers on service robots in an efficient manner, we present a programmable container management interface and a resource time-sharing mechanism incorporated with the Robot Operating System (ROS). Rorg allows developers to pack software into self-contained images and runs them in isolated environments using Linux containers; it also allows the robot to turn on and off software components on demand to avoid resource contention. We evaluate Rorg with a long-term autonomous tour guide robot: It manages 41 software components on the robot and relieved our maintenance burden, and it also reduces CPU load by 45.5% and memory usage by 16.5% on average.

Desktop virtualization, which is to make the desktop virtual so that users can access any application through the network with any devices at any time and any place, is being widely used now as an emerging trend. However, it is important to further improve this approach while maintaining good user experience. Though the simple protocol for independent computing environments as a virtual desktop solution can achieve a user experience similar to an interaction with a local machine, there are still many deficiencies in it. For instance, it cannot apply to environment of high controllability of user, and the quality of graphic interactive experience is to be improved. In this paper, to meet QoE requirements of user, we build a feasible file transfer and sharing mechanism and propose a graphics subsystem optimization strategy based on simple protocol for independent computing environments SPICE, namely Transparent Desktop. We also verify that the Transparent Desktop can provide users with ubiquitous desktop services of higher efficiency, stronger user-controllability and better QoE through the experimental. The issue of distribution of large amounts of information on server stations is researched. The analysis of existing methods for distributing data of heavily loaded web applications is carried out. A system for computing load distribution using a balancing server is proposed. A description of the software necessary for the functioning of the system and server management interface is provided.

A novel approach for discovering vulnerability in commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) IoT devices is proposed in this paper, which will revolutionize the area. Unlike previous work, the web management interface in IoT was used to detect vulnerabilities by leveraging fuzzing technology. To validate and evaluate this scheme, a tool named WMIFuzzer was designed and implemented. There were also two challenges: (1) due to the diversity of web interface implementations, there were no existing seed messages for fuzzing this interface and it was inefficient while taking random messages to launch the fuzzing and (2) because of the highly structured seed message, fuzzing with byte-level mutation could conduce to be rejected by the device at an early stage. To address these challenges, a brute-force UI automation was designed to drive the web interface to generate initial seed messages automatically, as well as a weighted message parse tree (WMPT) was proposed to guide the mutation to generate mostly structure-valid messages. The extensive experimental results show that WMIFuzzer could achieve expected result while 10 vulnerabilities including 6 zero-days in 7 COTS IoT devices were discovered.

Many businesses prefer to run their web application in a cloud, as this provides an access to large numbers of computing and storage resources. To run a web application in a cloud, a virtual environment with the corresponding technology stack has to be created. The interfaces provided by cloud services (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.) require micromanagement of all individual components. This makes the management of technology stacks an extremely time consuming and complex task, which involves a high degree of expertise. We present here SMI, a stack management interface that let you think about your cloud infrastructure as stacks of cloud technologies and enables moderately experienced users to manage the stacks as a whole.

In order to make it easy to maintain and manage the campus network equipment, on the basis of depth analysis of current campus network deployment and the support features for a variety of network protocols of Python, the design will establish remote connection with network equipment to realize the remote centralized control of network communication equipment with the remote Telnet function of router and switchboard. The design uses PHP to realize the graphical campus network management interface, and finally presents a complete campus network management system through Web page. The system will bring convenience on network management and maintenance for the administrator.

The rise in number and complexity of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and networks has led to a profusion of tools and technologies that aim to facilitate IoT management. These management solutions must consider the resource restrictions of embedded devices, their heterogeneity and network dynamics. In this context, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) engaged itself in an effort to develop standards that allow for the integration and interoperation of heterogeneous devices, such as RESTCONF and CoMI (CoAP Management Interface). On the other hand, the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) is developing a protocol for IoT device management named Lightweight Machine-to-Machine (LwM2M). This paper provides an overview of management protocols for IoT devices. The presented analysis ranges from traditional network management protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), to the newest protocols used for management and configuration of IoT devices, such as the already mentioned CoMI and LwM2M protocols. In addition, this paper also provides an analysis of the challenges of IoT device management.

Currently gamification is being extended as a methodology to create learning courses. Although, Moodle is the most extended free platform for educational courses and it contains by default elements of gamification, most of gamified experiences found used other tools. This document considers the implementation of an interface that allows an easy management of gamification in Moodle.

This study develops a digital navigation system for the Water Resources Center to introduce the process and knowledge of sewage treatment to the general public. The system can be divided into three main parts, interactive multimedia games, pre and post online tests and 3D guided video. The system also combined with the official LINE account that allows visitors to receive timely results from the pre-test and post-test systems to learn about the sewage treatment-related knowledge. The score competition makes the game funnier that can enhance the entertaining results. The system also provides a completed management interface that assists the factory managers to maintain the entire system, including test questions pre-test and post-test, answer analysis, questionnaire feedback satisfaction analysis. According to the results of the rewinding analysis, the system indeed can promote the sewage treatment knowledge to the visitors. Most of the visitors feel the system is interesting and useful.

Cloud infrastructures provide computing resources to applications in the form of Virtual Machines (VMs). Many applications deployed in cloud resources have an elastic behavior, that is, they change the number of servers (VMs) dynamically, adapting the application to the workload. Scaling-out and scaling-in operations are managed by an auto-scaler module, which can be reactive (adapting the number of VMs to the current workload) or proactive (adapting to the expected future workload). The cloud infrastructure provides a management interface to create (deploy) and destroy (shutdown) server instances, operations that require some time to complete. In this work we evaluate to what extent the reduction of the time required by VM management operations, namely deployment and shutdown, impacts the performance of applications and the behavior of reactive and proactive auto-scaling policies. After establishing several ideal boundaries on the use of resources, we carry out a set of experiments that show how short management times drastically reduce the use of resources, while allowing the application to operate within the required performance bounds., TIN2016-78365R

Cyber-attacks and breaches are often detected too late to avoid damage. While "classical" reactive cyber defenses usually work only if we have some prior knowledge about the attack methods and "allowable" patterns, properly constructed redundancy-based anomaly detectors can be more robust and often able to detect even zero day attacks. They are a step toward an oracle that uses knowable behavior of a healthy system to identify abnormalities. In the world of Internet of Things (IoT), security, and anomalous behavior of sensors and other IoT components, will be orders of magnitude more difficult unless we make those elements security aware from the start. In this article we examine the ability of redundancy-based anomaly detectors to recognize some high-risk and difficult to detect attacks on web servers---a likely management interface for many IoT stand-alone elements. In real life, it has taken long, a number of years in some cases, to identify some of the vulnerabilities and related attacks. We discuss practical relevance of the approach in the context of providing high-assurance Web-services that may belong to autonomous IoT applications and devices.

Within the MEDNET project “Mediterranean Network for Custom Procedures and Simplification of Clearance in Ports” funded by the MED programme (2007–2013), Taranto Port Authority (TPA) in Italy has designed and developed newly automatic system (prototype) for an effective and seamless management of port operators enrolment and access in the port area. Taranto Port Authority developed and tested an effective Information Technologies (IT) based on a multi-user management tool with a single interface for all port operators. The interface is based on functionalities coming from the integration and re-engineering of two different procedures managed by TPA: 1) enrolment in the TPA's Register foreseen in art. 68 of the Italian Navigation Law, mandatory for all private companies and individuals operating in the port; 2) the procedure of issuing of passes for vehicles and people to enter in the port area. The scope of this initiative was to re-engineer the two aforementioned procedures into a single IT based procedure with a single management interface. It enables to accelerate the process for passes release as well as to improve port accessibility by reducing the number of potential errors and transforming the nature of the procedure from “preventive” to “fact-finding”. In this way, the port community of Taranto will be able to provide relevant services in less time. The prototype is able to speed up the issuing of passes for persons and vehicles entering in the port area by reducing the time needed to check documents provided by companies as well as informing relevant authorities. The developed prototype enables to automatically manage different categories of passes for entering in the port of Taranto: annual passes, provisional passes as well as visitors passes. The combined effect of the new local regulation (TPA's Ordinance no. 04/14 of April 28th 2014) and the prototype enables to issue passes in 7–8 days against the previous 60 days required to complete (annual) pass request procedure. The benefits in terms of time saving have been also achieved for the other categories of passes (provisional and visitors). The prototype leads to seamless procedures management as well as to simplification of checks in entering in the port area. Streamlining procedures enables not only a reduction in terms of needed time for regular control of requests, but also a real-time control of the handled requests in parallel with the traditional ways (paper protocols). Taranto Port Authority as well as the other competent bodies are now able to check each single person and vehicle accessing in the port of Taranto, improving actual procedure and related controls, through an efficient check-in/check-out reporting. Seamless administrative formalities related of both companies’ enrolment and passes requests enable to reach an overall improvement of port accessibility and transit of vehicles and goods in the area, positively affecting its competiveness as well as quality of provided added-value services. The prototype is able to significantly reduce relevant administrative and bureaucratic aspects. Simplification of the procedures is expected to positively influence the door-to-door transport time and costs for business accessing and circulating in the port area and beyond.

As "working with a browser" continues to gain acceptance, an emerging strategy adopted by software companies is to provide a Web version of their applications previously developed in a desktop environment. This article introduces a desktop application service framework that enables a Web server to host desktop applications and supports accessing these applications through a browser. The authors present a case study to show how the framework helps a virtual desktop cloud reduce bandwidth consumption by supporting browser-based access.

In recent years, adoption of cloud computing for computational needs is growing significantly due to various factors such as no upfront cost and access to latest service. In general, cloud infrastructure providers offer a wide range of services with different pricing models, instance types and a host of value-added features. Efficient selection of cloud services constitutes significant management challenges for cloud consumer, which is tedious and involves large information processing. To overcome this, the cloud brokers provide resource provisioning options that ease the task of choosing the best services based on consumers requirements and also provide a uniform management interface to access cloud services. This paper proposes a novel cloud brokering architecture that provides an optimal deployment plan for placement of virtual resources in multiple clouds. The objective of the deployment plan is to select the best cloud services with optimal cost, taking into account various attributes defined in service measurement index (SMI) with additional physical and logical constraints. The proposed cloud brokering architecture has been modeled using mixed integer programming formulation and Benders decomposition algorithm to solve efficiently. Efficacy of the proposed algorithm has been verified by extensive numerical studies and sensitivity analysis.

The fast spread of computer networks and broadband Internet access, and also the development of different operating systems, makes possible to use different virtualization techniques and virtual machines. The release and spread of virtualization platforms makes possible the development of cost-effective information systems that can provide in addition dynamic resource management and simplified system administration. In this paper we present a comparative performance analysis of Remote Desktop Virtualization based on Hyper-V versus Remote Desktop Services. We introduce system architecture for the two tested scenario and test environment including detailed hardware description. The main conclusions of the paper are that despite the higher acquisition and maintenance costs, the Remote Desktop Services outperforms the Hyper-V based Remote Desktop Virtualization in memory, CPU and also storage management.

Patient privacy has recently become the most important issue in the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United States and Europe. However, inter-hospital medical information is currently shared using paper-based operations, and this is an important research issue for the complete and immediate exchange of electronic medical records to avoid duplicate prescriptions or procedures. An electronic medical record (EMR) is a computerized medical record created by a care-giving organization, such as a hospital and doctor's surgery. Using electronic medical records can improve patient's privacy and health care efficiency. Although there are many advantages to electronic medical records, the problem of exchanging and sharing medical images remains to be solved. The motivation of this paper is to attempt to resolve the problems of storing and sharing electronic medical records and medical images between different hospitals. Cloud Computing is enabled by the existing parallel and distributed technology, which provides computing, storage and software services to users. Specifically, this study develops a Medical Image File Accessing System (MIFAS) based on HDFS of Hadoop in cloud. The proposed system can improve medical imaging storage, transmission stability, and reliability while providing an easy-to-operate management interface. This paper focuses on the cloud storage virtualization technology to achieve high-availability services. We have designed and implemented a medical imaging system with a distributed file system. The experimental results show that the high reliability data storage clustering and fault tolerance capabilities can be achieved. Two-factor authentication can significantly reduce risks of compromised accounts by protecting from the majority of password-leak based attacks. RADIUS protocol is a popular method of providing the second-factor authentication. This paper presents an innovative approach to enrolling users in RADIUS protocol based two-factor authentication. It describes a RESTful API, which complements the standard RADIUS protocol by adding the possibility of self-service second-factor enrollment. It also demonstrates a proof of concept RADIUS appliance and the web-based management interface as well as examples of API integration with a number of products.

This paper presents a safety assessment model with regard to electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) fault suitable for estimating the EMC failure probability (EMC FP) of the complex system facing uncertain electromagnetic environment. First, the model is successfully applied to decompose the complex system into different independent subsystem and equipment. Then the practical EMI scenario is modeled as different typical EMC problem, such as the Plane Wave Coupling and Crosstalk respectively. After that the fault tree analysis (FTA) is proposed to use in combination with electromagnetic topology (EMT) calculating the EMC FP of the system. A focus is put on the practical case of the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) system. In this context, a system-level EMC safety assessment model has been applied to solve EMC FP by uncertainty analysis in high speed railways with the complex electromagnetic environment.

The economies of scale afforded by cloud computing has been a driving force behind the rapid development and deployment of new cloud-based network applications and services. With the massive growth of IoT devices, we expect a sharp rise in the volume of traffic seen going to and coming from cloud datacenters, which will continue to grow over the next several years. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is a recent concept which promises to grant network operators the required flexibility to quickly develop and provision new network functions and services in the cloud. As NFV is agnostic to the computing resource, we foresee scenarios where unconventional resources such as FPGAs and GPUs will be of benefit. To this end, we present an architecture based on Software-Defined Infrastructure (SDI) which offers an abstracted control and management interface over virtualized heterogeneous resources in the cloud. Through a unified set of APIs, this architecture enables both application developers and network operators to dynamically deploy and manage new services in the cloud alongside the underlying network that interconnects them, all in a fully software-defined manner. We demonstrate and evaluate an implementation of our NFV-enablement architecture using the SAVI testbed, a multi-tier and SDN-enabled cloud containing virtualized heterogeneous compute resources.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) application development is a novel field that has emerged in the context of SDN. This new networking paradigm is intended to mitigate limitations that appeared in traditional networks, such as vendor dependency, complexity or the lack of agility. It gradually migrated through several types of networks, beginning from campus networks, to data centers, transport networks or even Internet exchange points. The SDN ecosystem is expanding, from the SDN controller perspective and both southbound and northbound, including the development of applications. This paper introduces part of the work that was done for the third Wireless Transport SDN Proof of Concept (PoC). The purpose of the PoC was demonstrating the utility of a common information model that would represent a wireless transport device, to be used for its management and configuration in the context of SDN. A simulator consisting of a NETCONF server implementation, that would emulate the management interface of a network element but only return default values for its corresponding YANG attributes (Default Values Mediator — DVM) was realized using the OpenYuma software framework. This eased the development and testing of SDN applications that were proposed and implemented for the use cases of the PoC.

The ongoing integration of various devices and services into nowadays buildings as part of networked building automation systems (BAS) demands for flexible and dynamically adaptable system architectures as they are supported by service orientation, which, moreover, can provide suitable abstractions when integrating new technologies and systems arising for example from the Internet of Things. The increasing complexity of such service systems, however, is accompanied by increasing dependability requirements. Therefore a comprehensive and automated technical management system including service lifecycle management, dynamic (re-)configuration, distributed (re-)deployment, self-repair etc. has to be accomplished. Furthermore the management tasks and the required abstraction of the managed system should span a defined state space in order to enable formal verification of system characteristics like dependability. This work reports on a technical management system utilizing general and system-specific event-condition-action-rules (ECA rules) to enable the dependable operation of BAS. The management tree does not only serve as homogeneous management interface to the BAS, but spans in conjunction with the ECA rules the desired state space.

The remote desktop environment (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) is attracting interest as a way to strengthen security and support mobile access or telework. To realize the remote desktop environments, a remote desktop protocol is required to transfer information via a network about the user’s operations made on the keyboard and mouse on a terminal to the remote server. The growing popularity of remote desktop environments makes it important to determine the factors that govern the user’s perceived operability with a remote desktop protocol. It is also necessary important to find out the conditions for a wide-area live migration of virtual machines, to use resources efficiently in the remote desktop environments. This paper examines the impact of network quality deterioration (long network delay, high packet loss, small downlink bandwidth) on a user’s perceived operability in remote desktop environments, assuming RDP, PCoIP and ICA as remote desktop protocol. Next, this paper studies the impact of network quality on the performance of a live-migration of virtual machines in remote desktop environments.

Traditional web-based e-learning system suffers from unstable workloads and security risks of incorporating external executable objects to servers. This paper addresses these issues with emerging technologies, as desktop grid and cloud computing. Learning users are motivated to be volunteers by hosting the virtual machines equipped with e-learning desktop grid applications. We develop components to integrate the e-learning system and desktop grid into the circumstance in which each user serves not only a task producer, but also a volunteer that solves tasks. In order to enhance the responsiveness between the passive desktop grid server and e-learning system, we have also developed asynchronous processes to enable the server and volunteer workers to cooperate in a tightly coupled manner. The system achieves the scalability by maintaining the ratio between the number of volunteers and the number of online users beyond certain threshold.

In this paper, the current problems and demands of campus information system was analyzed and the desktop virtualization solutions were probed. Thus, under the cloud system structure, the user can simply login by the client in desktop systems of data center, as well as traditional computer operating. As a result, the flexibility and security in application of resources are enhanced. More over, schools can avoid the repeated investment and reduce the pressure on hardware and software maintenance, and improve the working efficiency.

This paper describes the development of a database and a website to support the newest version of Low Impact Development Rapid Assessment (LIDRA) model, LIDRA 2.0, a planning level model for assessing the cost-effectiveness of low impact development (LID) and addressing runoff-related problems in urban watersheds. LIDRA 2.0 is a web-based application that generates stochastic precipitation data from local historical data sets using a Markov Chain and bootstrapping method. Precipitation is applied to urban watersheds with parcel and street areas. LID scenarios and associated adoption and repaving rates are then used to perform multiple 30 year simulations, during which the difference in runoff is calculated using a water balance. The application needs to store parcel and street specifications and also offer a management interface, both of which must be accessible through the internet. The results of this are: an efficient tool to support LIDRA in terms of storage, retrieval and analysis of data and an integrated web application which allows users an easier way to input data and greatly reduce the time it takes to manage simulation modules via use of the graphical result interfaces that show the results produced. The technical underpinnings of this tool are highlighted using a small example.

Due to the need to agilely cope with more complex and virtualized applications, integrating Software-Defined Networking (SDN) switches and OpenStack software platform into the data center has becomes an important enabling technology. However, the SDN controller and OpenStack have their own management interface, such as Horizon, which may not be able to meet the user's requirement on managing both platforms in one data center. For example, although the deployment of switches of a data center usually follows a layering hierarchy, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of management system of the SDN controller, such as Ryu, shows the topology of switches in a random and messy manner. Furthermore, tightly integration of SDN and OpenStack is required for agile and real-time management. Thus, in this paper, we design and implement a management system which tightly integrates SDN and OpenStack. In the proposed management system, the topology displays SDN switches, Open vSwitches (OVS), as well as virtual machines in hierarchy of multi-rooted trees. In order to display millions of virtual machines and thousands of switches, the GUI of the proposed management system provides a scalable view for users to zoom in or zoom out the topology. The proposed management system adopts modular design and provides web-based user interface and RESTful API for interoperability. The prototype of the proposed management system is shown to demonstrate the usability and scalability of the proposed system.

Knowing the advantages of public cloud services is important for undergraduate students that will work in the IT domain. The study of cloud technology should cover not only the theoretical aspects but should also give hands on access and experience with the management interface. Two important players on this market offer access to services as a free trial that allows testing and light cloud platform usage: Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. This paper compares these free services and their usability in an undergraduate laboratory at the Computer Science specialization and proposes a laboratory structure that should cover this process of investigation.

My association with the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program has encouraged a multidisciplinary scientific approach emphasizing broad spatial scales and site-based knowledge. It also provides a solid basis from which to link science and management. In my position as a federal research scientist, I do not teach university classes. When I teach in other venues and advise graduate students, my LTER experiences facilitate my ability to draw connections among disciplines that bear on particular ecological problems. Multidisciplinary breadth alongside site-specific depth afforded by the LTER program is especially useful for communicating to the public. It is important to know a lot about one area (place-based knowledge), in addition to something broader. Collaboration is especially important for scientists working together at an LTER site and is also important for cross- site LTER efforts addressing regional to global problems. Within- group collaboration comes rather easily when there are healthy interpersonal relationships. Cross- site collaboration requires greater effort and network-level leadership. I have been a co–principal investigator of the Jornada Basin site (JRN) of the LTER program since 2006 and a research ecologist with the US Agricultural Research Service, Jornada Experimental Range (JER), since 2003. In both capacities, my research addresses land change in drylands (arid, semiarid, and dry subhumid deserts, grasslands, shrublands, woodlands). Specifically, I work on ecosystem state changes or regime shifts, including subjects such as land degradation and desertification; these may include how land managers perceive and react to state change via mental models, information, and restoration approaches (e.g., Bestelmeyer et al. 2009). My work has been centered at the JRN in the Chihuahuan Desert grasslands of southern New Mexico and also in grasslands and woodlands of Mongolia and Argentina. My activities include those generally associated with academia (research, publishing, grants, and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) in addition to work that is applied, such as outreach through workshops, trainings, field reviews, and writing to support management or government policy. The trade-off is not teaching university courses, although leading agency workshops and trainings partially fills this niche in my scientific career.

In a desktop grid model, the job (computational task) is submitted for execution in the resource only when the resource is idle. There is no guarantee that the job which has started to execute in a resource will complete its execution without any disruption from user activity (such as a keyboard stroke or mouse move) if the desktop machines are used for other purposes. This problem becomes more challenging in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) model for a desktop grid where there is no central server that decides to allocate a job to a particular resource. This paper describes a P2P desktop grid framework that utilizes resource availability prediction, using group availability data. We improve the functionality of the system by submitting the jobs on machines that have a higher probability of being available at a given time. We benchmark our framework and provide an analysis of our results.

Desktop is offered to each individual in Educational environments of school or academy, as the users are increasing, the more Desktop is required for each person. Huge Desktop accession resulted in many problems including difficulty of management, Software and Hardware cost rising, cramped places, power consumption increasing and etc. To solve those problems, we focus into uprising technology solution, such as Multi Computer, Desktop Virtualization, and DaaS(Desktop as a Service). In this paper, existing problems that can dramatically improve the private cloud computing for desktop virtualization with the requirements of the system were analyzed.

Cloud computing as a paradigm has led to its adoption in large-scale parallel processing and distributed computing. Resource selection places momentous challenges before consumers and service providers. As a remedy brokers stipulates resource provisioning options to match the submitted requests by facilitating a standardised management interface across global boundaries. Keeping in consideration, a DSufferage algorithm is proposed and implemented at platform level which is an improvisation in the existing sufferage heuristic. Deadline parameter has been inculcated to assign precedence levels to the jobs to be submitted to the machines. The novelty of the current research study is that the heuristic is centred towards both user and providers goals. The efficacy of the algorithm has been verified using CloudSim tool and is concluded that it is proficient enough to allocate resources to users tasks with in constraints of deadline, resource utilisation maximisation and SLA violation avoidance.
