1. Study on clinical and hematological profile of Anemia in children aged 5 t0 12 years in rural Telangana

Abstract

Introduction: Anemia is a major global health problem, especially in developing countries like India, despite the fact that this problem is largely preventable & easily treatable. Aim: The aim is to study the clinical and hematological profile of anemia in children aged 5 years to 12 years. Material and Methods: It is a prospective hospital based study conducted in children presented with anemia in the department of Pediatrics at Maheshwara Medical College and Hospital, Patancheru, Telangana. 110 pediatric cases of anemia were included in the study. Results: Majority of children were among followed by 5- 6 years. Among different types of anemia studied, iron deficiency was reported predominantly 80/110 (72.7%) followed by megaloblastic anemia 20/110 (18.1%). There was female preponderance. Microcytic hypochromic anemia is seen in 81.8% (90/110). Dimorphic anemia was observed in 9.09 % of children. Conclusion Nutritional deficiency anemia is the most common cause of anemia among children aged 5 years to 12 years. Iron deficiency was found to be most common nutritional deficiency in children followed by megaloblastic anemia.

Abstract

High power industrial loads such as, electric arc furnaces (EAF), variable frequency drives (VFD) are the main sources of power quality problems in steel plants. EAFs present rapidly varying, largely unbalanced, polluting and poor power factor load to power distribution network at the point of common coupling (PCC). Rapidly changing active and reactive power demand, causes voltage drop across the impedance of the ac system which in turn results in voltage fluctuations and poor power factor at PCC. The fast dynamic response of the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) makes it an ideal choice for solving power quality problems caused by EAF. Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based 2.5 MVAR STATCOM has been developed and installed at foundry shop, Bhilai Steel Plant for mitigation of voltage flicker caused by EAF and compensation of reactive power drawn by EAF. This paper presents the development and performance of the developed STATCOM with the recorded data.

Abstract

International audience; Low vision is a visual impairment that affects one's capacity to perform daily activities, among others, reading. Since difficulty to access printed materials is an obstacle to education, employment and social activities, adaptations of these material is often required, such as the usage of large print or audio transcriptions. The advent of digital documents, on computers and mobile devices, has enhanced the accessibility of text for people with low vision; however, there is still a lack of supply regarding accessible books for recreation reading. In this work, we study how an accessible reader can impact reader's engagement with comics, for both children and adults. We summarise the results of online surveys that have been conducted about the current usage of comics by reader with low vision and how professional attempt to provide them. This led to the design of ALCOVE, an accessible comic reader for people with low vision. We report the results of a user study with 11 participants with low vision, that examined both the usefulness of the proposed comic reader and the reading presentation mode. Results show that the participants found our application easy and very convenient to use.

Abstract

The Best of ISS Awards honor exceptional submissions to the conference; receiving an Honorable Mention Award indicates that your paper was identified by the ISS Program Committee Members and ISS Best Paper Committee as being among the top 5% of all submissions to ISS 2020.; International audience; Visual graphics are widely spread in digital media and are useful in many contexts of daily life. However, access to this type of graphical information remains a challenging task for people with visual impairments (VI). In this study, we designed and evaluated an on-hand vibrotactile interface that enables users with VI to explore digital graphics presented on tablets. We first conducted a set of exploratory tests with both people with VI and blindfolded (BF) people to investigate several design factors. We then conducted a comparative experiment to verify that on-hand vibrotactile cues (indicating direction and progression) can enhance the non-visual exploration of digital graphics. The results based on 12 participants with VI and 12 BF participants confirmed the usability of the technique and revealed that the visual status of the users does not impact graphics identification and comparison tasks.

Abstract

Part 4: Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired; International audience; Digital Interactive Maps on touch surfaces are a convenient alternative to physical raised-line maps for users with visual impairments. To compensate for the absence of passive tactile information, they provide vibrotactile and auditory feedback. However, this feedback is ambiguous when using multiple fingers since users may not identify which finger triggered it. To address this issue, we explored the use of bilateral feedback, i.e. collocated with each hand, for two-handed map exploration. We first introduced a design space of feedback for two-handed interaction combining two dimensions: spatial location (unilateral vs. bilateral feedback) and similarity (same vs. different feedback). We implemented four techniques resulting from our design space, using one or two smartwatches worn on the wrist (unilateral vs. bilateral feedback respectively). A first study with fifteen blindfolded participants showed that bilateral feedback outperformed unilateral feedback and that feedback similarity has little influence on exploration performance. Then we did a second study with twelve users with visual impairments, which confirmed the advantage of two-handed vs. one-handed exploration, and of bilateral vs. unilateral feedback. The results also bring to light the impact of feedback on exploration strategies.

Abstract

International audience; Technology has become central to many activities of learning, ranging from its use in classroom education to work training, mastering a new hobby, or acquiring new skills of living. While digitally-enhanced learning tools can provide valuable access to information and personalised support, people with specific accessibility needs, such as low or no vision, can often be excluded from their use. This requires technology developers to build more inclusive designs and to offer learning experiences that can be shared by people with mixed-visual abilities. There is also scope to integrate DIY approaches and provide specialised teachers with the ability to design their own low cost educational tools, adapted to pedagogical objectives and to the variety of visual and cognitive abilities of their students. For researchers, this invites new challenges of how to best support technology adoption and its evaluation in often complex educational settings. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in accessibility and education to share best practices and lessons learnt for technology in this space; and to jointly discuss and develop future directions for the next generation design of inclusive and effective education technologies.

Abstract

International audience; Tactile raised-line maps are paper maps widely used by visually impaired people. We designed a mobile technique, based on hand tracking and a smartwatch, in order to leverage pervasive access to virtual maps. We use the smartwatch to render localized text-to-speech and vibratory feedback during hand exploration, but also to provide filtering functions activated by swipe gestures. We conducted a first study to compare the usability of a raised-line map with three virtual maps (plain, with filter, with filter and grid). The results show that virtual maps are usable, and that adding a filter, or a filter and a grid, significantly speeds up data exploration and selection. The results of a following case study showed that visually impaired users were able to achieve a complex task with the device, i.e. finding spatial correlations between two sets of data.

Abstract

Teachers and educators working with visually impaired students need to create numerous adapted learning materials that represent maps, shapes, objects, concepts, etc. This process usually relies on tactile document makers. It is time consuming and expensive. Recent “Do-It-Yourself” (DIY) techniques, including 3D printing and low-cost rapid prototyping, may enable to easily and quickly create learning materials that is versatile, interactive and cheap. In this study, we first analyzed the needs of many professionals at an institute for visually impaired children. It appeared that many of the students also present associated behavioral disorders, which has consequences on the design of adapted materials. In a second step, we used a focus group with design probes made with regular or 3D printed objects, and low-cost microcontrollers. At the end of the focus group, we identified four specific scenarios with different teachers and students. We created four low-cost interactive prototypes, and we observed how they were used during learning sessions. In conclusion, DIY methods appear to be a valuable solution for enabling professionals to quickly design new adapted materials or modify existing ones. Furthermore, DIY methods provide a collaborative framework between teachers and visually impaired students, which has a positive impact on their motivation.

International audience; 15 sighted and 15 congenitally blind adults were to classify raised-line pictures of emotional faces through haptics. Whereas accuracy did not vary significantly between the two groups, the blind adults were faster at the task. These results suggest that raised-line pictures of emotional faces are intelligible to blind adults.

Abstract

International audience; Clinical trials reveal that current visual neuroprosthesis are not yet usable. The main reason is the small number of implanted electrodes, leading to a very poor visual resolution. The resolution is especially not sufficient to detect specific objects (faces, signs, etc.) in the surroundings. We used simulated prosthetic vision (SPV) to show that pre-processing of the camera image could restore these functions, even with low- resolution implants. Specifically, we showed that it is possible to quickly detect and localize human faces located nearby. We suggest that high-level processing of the video stream may be included in current visual neuroprosthesis. This would restore many visuomotor behaviors such as grasping, heading, steering, etc.

Abstract

Although artificial vision systems could potentially provide very useful input to assistive devices for blind people, such devices are rarely used outside of laboratory experiments. Many current systems attempt to reproduce the visual image via an alternative sensory modality (often auditory or somatosensory), but this dominant "scoreboard" approach, is often difficult to interpret for the user. Here, we propose to offload the recognition problem onto a separate image processing system that then provides the user with just the essential information about the location of objects in the surrounding environment. Specifically, we show that a bio-inspired image processing algorithm (SpikeNet) can not only robustly, precisely, and rapidly recognize and locate key objects in the image, but also in space if the objects are in a stereoscopic field of view. In addition, the bio-inspired algorithm allows real-time calculation of optic flow. We hence propose that this system, coupled with a restitution interface allowing localization in space (i.e. three-dimensional virtual sounds synthesis) can be used to restore essential visuomotor behaviors such as grasping desired objects and navigating (finding directions, avoiding obstacles) in unknown environments.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose some adaptation to Geographical Infor-mation System (GIS) components used in GPS based navigation system. In our design process, we adopted a user-centered design approach in collaboration with final users and Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructors. A database scheme is presented to integrate the principal classes proposed by users and O&M instructors. In addition, some analytical tools are also implemented and integrated in the GIS. This adapted GIS can improve the guidance process of existing and future EOAs. A first implementation of an adapted guidance process allowing a better representation of the surroundings is provided as an il-lustration of this adapted GIS. This work is part of the NAVIG system (Naviga-tion Assisted by Artificial VIsion and GNSS), an assistive device, whose aim is to improve the Quality of Life of Visually Impaired (VI) persons via increased orientation and mobility capabilities.

Abstract

With the aim of designing an assistive device for the Blind, we compared the ability of blind and sighted subjects to accurately locate several types of sounds generated in the peri-personal space. Despite a putative lack of calibration of their auditory system with vision, blind subjects performed with a similar accuracy as sighted subjects. The average error was sufficiently low (10° in azimuth and 10 cm in distance) to orient a user towards a specific goal or to guide a hand grasping movement to a nearby object. Repeated white noise bursts of short duration induced better performance than continuous sounds of similar total duration. These types of sound could be advantageously used in an assistive device. They would provide indications about direction to follow or position of surrounding objects, with limited masking of environmental sounds, which are of primary importance for the Blind.

Abstract

Orientation and mobility are tremendous problems for Blind people. Assistive technologies based on Global Positioning System (GPS) could provide them with a remarkable autonomy. Unfortunately, GPS accuracy, Geographical Information System (GIS) data and map-matching techniques are adapted to vehicle navigation only, and fail in assisting pedestrian navigation, especially for the Blind. In this paper, we designed an assistive device for the Blind based on adapted GIS, and fusion of GPS and vision based positioning. The proposed assistive device may improve user positioning, even in urban environment where GPS signals are degraded. The estimated position would then be compatible with assisted navigation for the Blind. Interestingly the vision module may also answer Blind needs by providing them with situational awareness (localizing objects of interest) along the path. Note that the solution proposed for positioning could also enhance autonomous robots or vehicles localization.

Abstract

The vast majority of existing route selection processes is designed for vehicle navigation. In this paper we describe an adapted routing algorithm for visually impaired pedestrians based on users needs. Our aim was to find the most adapted route that connects origin and destination points, and which can provide the Blind with a sparse but helpful mental representation of the itinerary and surroundings. Based on multiple brainstorming sessions and interviews with blind people and an orientation and mobility (O&M) instructor, different classes of objects were defined and tagged in the Geographical Information System. The optimal route was then selected using the Dijkstra algorithm. This method will be used in NAVIG (Navigation Assisted by Artificial VIsion and GNSS), an assistive device for the Blind, whose aim is to improve orientation, mobility and objects localization.

Abstract

We investigated the role of visual experience and visual imagery in the processing of two-dimensional (2-D) tactile patterns. The performance of early-blind (EB), late-blind (LB), and blindfolded sighted (S) adults in the recognition of 2-D raised-line patterns was compared. We also examined whether recognition of 2-D tactile patterns depends on the type of memory strategy (eg spatial, visuo-spatial, verbal, and kinesthetic) used by EB, LB, and S participants to perform the task. Significant between-group differences in the recognition performance have not been found despite significant between-group differences in self-reported memory strategies. Recognition performance does not vary significantly with the strategy, but correlates positively with visuo-spatial imagery abilities in the S participants. These findings may be taken to suggest that the difficulties some blind people experience with tactile pictures are not due to difficulties in processing 2-D tactile patterns.

Abstract

International audience; Image processing can improve significantly the every-day life of blind people wearing current and upcoming retinal prostheses relying on an external camera. We propose to use a real-time text localization algorithm to improve text accessibility. An augmented text-specific rendering based on automatic text localization has been developed. It has been evaluated in comparison to the classical rendering through a Simulated Prosthetic Vision (SPV) experiment with 16 subjects. Subjects were able to detect text in natural scenes much faster and further with the augmented rendering compared to the control rendering. Our results show that current and next generation of low resolution retinal prostheses may benefit from real-time text detection algorithms.

Abstract

International audience; In this study, we used a simulation of upcoming low-resolution visual neuroprostheses to evaluate the benefit of embedded computer vision techniques in a wayfinding task. We showed that augmenting the classical phosphene rendering with the basic structure of the environment - displaying the ground plane with a different level of brightness - increased both wayfinding performance and cognitive mapping. In spite of the low resolution of current and upcoming visual implants, the improvement of these cognitive functions may already be possible with embedded artificial vision algorithms.
