The objective of the research was to evaluate quality of life and self-care agency among individuals with heart failure. Materials and Methods. The study sample consisted of 61 patients who were diagnosed with heart failure that occurred at least six months before we started our research, had no communication problems, were over 18 years old and were selected by random sampling method. The data were collected by the researcher using a face-to-face interview technique, a descriptive information form, the Short Form-36 Quality of Life Scale, and the Self-Care Agency Scale. In the analysis of the data, numbers, percentiles, means, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and the Pearson correlation coefficient were used. Results. The patients’ average self-care agency score was 71.75 ± 33.66. The patients received the highest score on the subscale of bodily pain (46.76 ± 31.02) and the lowest score on the subscale of role limitations due to physical health problems (19.26 ± 32.40). The patients’ age and disease duration were found to affect their self-care. Some quality-of-life subscales were affected by the educational, occupational and socioeconomic status, age, disease duration. Conclusions. Patients’ quality of life was found to be low, and the level of self-care agency was found to be moderate. Patients’ quality of life can be improved by increasing the frequency of self-care trainings given to patients.

Introduction. Since health information is considered as sensitive personal data and requires more careful protection, healthcare professionals need to be careful about this issue. The objective of this research was to determine nursing students’ attitudes towards recording and protecting patients’ personal health data. Materials and Methods. The population of this descriptive research consisted of 450 students who studied at the Department of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, Erzincan Binali Yildirim University. Sample selection was not used, and the research was completed with 374 students who were continuing education and who were accepted to participate in the research. Descriptive Information template and Attitude Scale for Recording and Protecting Personal Health Data for nursing students were used as data-collection instruments. The numbers, percentage, mean, standard deviation, non-parametric tests (the Mann-Whitney U test and the Kruskal-Wallis test) were used in data analysis. Results. Among our research participants, 68.4% of the students were females; 28.1% of the students were freshmen; 69% of the students were graduates of Anatolian high schools. Approximately 72.5% and 52.9% of the participants stated that they were aware of the concept of “personal data” and “personal health data” , respectively. The mean score of nursing students on the Attitude Scale for Recording and Protecting Personal Health Data was 3.97±0.71. The means scores obtained from subscales were as follows: 3.91±0.72 for Personal Health Data Information, 4.15±0.80 for Legal Information, 4.05±0.94 for Legal Data Sharing, 3.90±0.80 for Personal Health Data Sharing, and 3.77±0.33 for Recording of Personal Health Data, respectively. A statistically significant difference was found between the total scale and subscale scores of the students regarding their academic level. Conclusions. Students were found to have a positive attitude towards recording and protecting personal data. Increasing the responsibilities and raising awareness of the students for the protection of personal health data during their study is suggested to be important.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death globally, and nurses have a crucial role in informing cardiovascular disease patients about their diseases. The aim of the present study was to identify the effect of activities of daily living on the self-care agency of patients in a cardiovascular surgery clinic. This descriptive study was conducted between June 2014 and January 2015 with 180 patients hospitalized in the cardiovascular surgery clinic of a university hospital in the province of Erzincan in the Eastern region of Turkey. The data of the study were gathered using a descriptive form designed by the authors, Katz index of activities of daily living scale (ADLS), Lawton-Brody instrumental activities of daily living scale (IADLS), and self-care agency scale (SCAS). The data were processed using computer software and assessed using percentages, means, t test for independent groups, one-way analysis of variance, and correlation analysis tests. It was found that 50.6% of the patients were ≥65 years, 66.1% were male, 46.1% perceived their health status as moderate, and 35.6% had previously had heart attacks. The patients' mean ADLS score was 16.39 ± 2.30, their mean IADLS score was 19.23 ± 4.16, and their mean SCAS score was 92.11 ± 18.81. The patients' education level and perceived health were found to affect their mean SCAS scores. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the patients' ADLS and IADLS scores and their SCAS score. It was also noted that patients were more independent on the ADL and IADL, and that their self-care agency was higher.
