Radiological procedures are playing essential role in present diagnostic of pituitary gland. Pituitary tumours can now be visualized more accurately due to continued improvements in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques with gadolinium enhancement. Aim of the study: This article summarizes the current knowledge about radiological imaging of pituitary gland and in particular MRI scan procedures. In this paper we also want to show how the imaging of the pituitary gland looked like in the past and nowadays. Description of knowledge: Diagnostic procedures play primary role in present diagnosis and treatment of pituitary gland and sella turcica tumours. It is crucial for further diagnostic procedures to locate the tumour its size and margins. Currently magnetic resonance imaging is the more important examination just after the laboratory results. That modality easily shows exact location and tumours smaller than 1 cm. Radiological differentiation of lessions wouldn’t be possible without contrast agents. The latest MRI study protocols involve dynamic and delayed sequences for better visualisation and differential diagnostic. Conclusions: During the years radiological techniques evolved and gave us the perfect tool to visualize the pituitary gland and its pathologies. High-brightness electron bunches, such as those generated and accelerated in free-electron lasers (FELs), can develop small-scale structure in the longitudinal phase space. This causes variations in the slice energy spread and current profile of the bunch which then undergo amplification, in an effect known as the microbunching instability. By imposing energy spread modulations on the bunch in the low-energy section of an accelerator, using an undulator and a modulated laser pulse in the centre of a dispersive chicane, it is possible tomanipulate the bunch longitudinal phase space. This allows for the control and study of the instability in unprecedented detail. We report measurements and analysis of such modulated electron bunches in the 2Dspectro-temporal domain at the FERMI FEL, for three different bunch compression schemes. We also perform corresponding simulations of these experiments and show that the codes are indeed able to reproduce the measurements across a wide spectral range. This detailed experimental verification of the ability of codes to capture the essential beam dynamics of the microbunching instability will benefit the design and performance of future FELs., 12 pages, 14 figures

The effect of multiple small-angle Coulomb scattering, or intrabeam scattering (IBS) is routinely observed in electron storage rings over the typical damping time scale of milliseconds. So far, IBS has not been observed in single pass electron accelerators because charge density orders of magnitude higher than in storage rings would be needed. We show that such density is now available at high brightness electron linacs for free-electron lasers (FELs). We report measurements of the beam energy spread in the FERMI linac in the presence of the microbunching instability, which are consistent with a revisited IBS model for single pass systems. We also show that neglecting the hereby demonstrated effect of IBS in the parameter range typical of seeded VUV and soft x-ray FELs, results in too conservative a facility design, or failure to realise the accessible potential performance. As an example, an optimization of the FERMI parameters driven by an experimentally benchmarked model, opens the door to the extension of stable single spectral line emission to the water window (2.3–4.4 nm), with far-reaching implications for experiments in a variety of disciplines, ranging from physics and chemistry to biology and material sciences, and including nonlinear x-ray optics based on the four-wave-mixing approach.

BACKGROUND: 18F-FDG PET/CT has become an important tool in diagnosis of prosthetic vascular graft infections (PVGI). The aim of the study was to identify the patterns of vascular graft infection in 18F-FDG PET/CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed in 24 patients with vascular graft infection, in 17 patients implanted in an open surgery mode and in 7 patients by endovascular aortic repair (EVAR). Vascular prostheses were evaluated by two visual scales and semi-quantitative analysis with maximum standardized uptake values (SUV max). RESULTS: In the 3-point scale: 23 patients were in grade 1 and one patient was in grade 2. In the 5-point scale: 19 patients were in grade 5 with the highest activity in the focal area, 4 patients were in grade 4 and one patient in grade 3. The visual evaluation of 18F-FDG PET/CT study revealed that peri-graft high metabolic activity was associated with occurrence of morphological abnormalities (n = 21) like gas bubbles and peri-graft fluid retention or without abnormal CT findings (n = 3). The presence of the gas bubbles was linked to higher uptake of 18F-FDG (p < 0.01, SUVmax 11.81 ± 4.35 vs 7.36 ± 2.80, 15 vs 9 pts). In EVAR procedure, the highest metabolic activity was greater than in classical prosthesis (SUVmax 21.5 vs 13). CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT is a very useful tool for assessment of vascular graft infections. CT findings like gas bubbles, or peri-graft fluid retention were associated with significantly higher glucose metabolism; however, in some cases without anatomic alterations, increased metabolic activity was the only sign of infection.

The compact linear accelerator for research and applications (CLARA) is an ultrabright electron beam test facility being developed at STFC Daresbury Laboratory. The ultimate aim of CLARA is to test advanced free electron laser (FEL) schemes that can later be implemented on existing and future short-wavelength FELs. In addition, CLARA is a unique facility to provide a high-quality electron beam to test novel concepts and ideas in a wide range of disciplines and to function as a technology demonstrator for a future United Kingdom x-ray FEL facility. CLARA is being built in three phases; the first phase, or front end (FE), comprises an S-band rf photoinjector, a linac, and an S-bend merging with the existing versatile electron linear accelerator beam line; the second phase will complete the acceleration to full beam energy of 250 MeV and also incorporate a separate beam line for use of electrons at 250 MeV; and the third phase will include the FEL section. The CLARA FE was commissioned during 2018, and the facility was later made available for user experiments. Significant advancements have been made in developing high-level software and a simulation framework for start-to-end simulations. The high-level software has been successfully used for unmanned rf conditioning and for characterization of the electron beam. This paper describes the design of the CLARA FE, performance of technical systems, high-level software developments, preliminary results of measured beam parameters, and plans for improvements and upgrades. © 2020 authors. INTRODUCTION Endovascular treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) constitutes an alternative to the classic surgical approach. The procedure may be associated with specific complications, including persistent flow within the aneurysm sac, otherwise known as endoleak. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to assess the utility of ultrasound contrast agents in the diagnosis of endoleaks after endovascular AAA repair. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 198 patients with AAA underwent endovascular treatment. Follow‑up examinations were performed at 6 and 12 months after the procedure, including pre- and postcontrast ultrasound, followed by computed tomography angiography (CTA) as a reference. Each ultrasound examination consisted of B‑flow, color, and power Doppler evaluation before and after contrast injection, supplemented by a contrast‑enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) scan. RESULTS At 6 months, endoleaks were diagnosed in 16 and 22 patients during pre- and postcontrast ultrasound, respectively. CEUS confirmed the presence of 22 previously diagnosed and 4 new (type II) endoleaks. At 12 months, endoleaks were detected in 7 and 13 patients by means of pre- and postcontrast ultrasound, respectively. CEUS confirmed the presence of endoleaks in 17 patients. None of the endoleaks diagnosed solely with CEUS at 6 and 12 months were detected by CTA. CONCLUSIONS Contrast agents substantially increase the sensitivity of ultrasound in the diagnosis of endoleaks, particularly type II. CEUS proved to have the highest sensitivity for the diagnosis of endoleaks by revealing pathologies undetected by other modalities, including CTA. CEUS may substitute CTA in surveillance of patients after stent graft deployment.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common disease in Western society and ranges from steatosis to steatohepatitis to end-stage liver disease such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The molecular mechanisms that are involved in the progression of steatosis to more severe liver damage in patients are not fully understood. A deeper investigation of NAFLD pathogenesis is possible due to the many different animal models developed recently. In this review, we present a comparative overview of the most common dietary NAFLD rodent models with respect to their metabolic phenotype and morphological manifestation. Moreover, we describe similarities and controversies concerning the effect of NAFLD-inducing diets on mitochondria as well as mitochondria-derived oxidative stress in the progression of NAFLD.

Purpose This study aimed to collect confirmatory data in support of the safety and efficiency of the ArtVentive EOS™ for the treatment of the pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS). This study was based on the OCCLUDE 1 Study Protocol approved by the Local Ethics Committee. Materials and Methods A prospective study carried out in June and July 2014 included 12 women aged 21–48 years (mean 31 years) scheduled for PCS embolization using the ArtVentive EOS™. The inclusion criteria were clinical symptoms of PCS documented by transvaginal Doppler ultrasound and pelvic MRI. The pelvic pain was assessed by VAS score from 0 to 10 (0 represents lack of pain and 10 unbearable pain). A decrease in pelvic pain intensity based on the VAS was considered a clinical success. Results Successful embolization procedures with ArtVentive EOS™ were performed in 11 out of 12 patients. Nine patients underwent unilateral embolization of the left ovarian vein, and two had bilateral embolization of the ovarian veins. Complete ovarian vein occlusion confirmed by post deployment venography was achieved in all 11 patients. Procedures lasted from 19 to 45 min (average 28 min). Pain intensity decrease was observed in all 11 patients—a decrease of 5.6 points—from 7.3 pre-procedure to 1.6 post-embolization (standard deviation: 0.67). In one case, the left ovarian vein was injured by guide wire manipulation with contrast extravasation—not clinically significant. Conclusions The use of ArtVentive EOS™ for occlusion of the ovarian veins in PCS patients is safe and effective.

A single human oesophageal adenocarcinoma cell (OE33) has been imaged using aperture infrared scanning near-field optical microscopy (IR-SNOM) in transmission and reflection and also by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy in transmission only. This work presents the first images obtained in both transmission and reflection of the same specimen using the aperture IR SNOM technique. The results have been used to compare the two SNOM modes and also the two techniques, which have complementary capabilities. The SNOM technique necessitates a very stable source and a careful choice of wavelengths, since it is too slow to yield images at the thousands ofwavelengths obtained with FTIR. However the SNOM technique is not diffraction limited and with careful fabrication of tips can yield images with high spatial resolution. There is no significant correlation between the SNOM images obtained in transmission and reflection and the correlations between images obtained at different wavelengths vary with the different imaging modes. These results are attributed to the strong dependence of the evanescent wave on both the wavelength and the distance between the tip and the source of the signal within the sample. While both transmission and reflection SNOM images show some correlation with topography this is not a dominant effect. These results indicate that with suitable calibration a combination of reflection and transmission aperture IR-SNOM measurements has the potential to reveal information on the depth distribution of the chemical structure of a specimen.

Research focused on association between periodontal diseases and atherosclerosis has been substantial in recent years. It is now well known that chronic inflammation plays an important role in initiation and evolution of atherosclerosis. The bacterial plaque is a key pathology leading to periodontal inflammation. As reported by other authors, bacteria causing periodontal disease were found within the carotid arteries in adults, thus association between periodontal disease in childhood and peripheral vascular disease seem justifiable. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential link between certain bacteria found in children with periodontal disease and the process of atherosclerosis in adults. Research was carried out in 97 children of which 58 aged between 6-14 comprised an experimental group, whereas 39 children aged of 6-13 comprised the control group. Based on physical examination, the oral hygiene in children of the experimental group was average or bad, while in children of the control group the oral hygiene was good. Blood samples and subgingival plaques were obtained to proceed with microbiological testing by PCR technique. The results of tests showed Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans in 55% and Prevotella intermedia in 79% of children in the experimental group. Only 2 cases of Prevotella intermedia were detected in the control group, however, no cases of Porphyromnas gingivalis were found in either groups. Full blood count, serum homocysteine, CRP, fibrinogen and HDL cholesterol values were normal in both groups. Total cholesterol value was increased in 24,14% in the experimental group vs. 5,15% in the control group, thus increase of total serum cholesterol concentration in children with bad oral hygiene may by a risk factor of atherosclerosis.

Introduction. Vascular malformations present a serious diagnostic and therapeutic problem of modern medicine. They occur in 1.5% of human population and are equally common in both sexes. The symptoms of vascular malformations are diverse and include cosmetic defects, tissue ulcerations, pain, oedema and functional disorders. Vascular malformations are treated with surgical procedures, techniques of interventional radiology, laser therapy or a combination of the methods mentioned above. Aim. To evaluate effectiveness of peripheral vascular malformations treatment with using endovascular techniques. Material and methods. Between 2009-2014, 46 therapeutic procedures were performed in patients with vascular malformations within the lower limbs, shoulder girdle and pelvis in the Department of Interventional Radiology and Neuroradiology, Medical University of Lublin. Various treatment techniques were used – procedures were carried out via arterial access (most commonly – 35/46), venous access (3/46) and by direct puncture of lesions (8/46). Results. The intended technical success was achieved in 82% of procedures; in some patients after several-stage embolisation and subsequent surgical resection. In 8 patients, further embolisation procedures will be performed due to a considerable extent of vascular malformation and its incomplete exclusion from circulation. Conclusions. Minimally invasive endovascular techniques enable effective treatment of vascular malformations; strict cooperation of a multi-disciplinary team of specialists, mainly interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons and dermatologists, leads to best outcomes.

The need for real-time monitoring of beam losses, including evaluation of their intensity and localization of their exact position, together with the possibility to overcome the limitations due to the reduced space for the diagnostics, makes exploitation of the Cherenkov effect in optical fibres, one of the most suitable candidates for beam loss monitoring. In this article, we report on the first tests of an optical fibre beam loss monitor based on large numerical aperture pure silica fibres and silicon photomultipliers. The tests were carried out at the ALICE accelerator research and development facility, Daresbury Laboratories, UK. In contrast to the results already published where the fibres are longitudinally placed with respect to the accelerator beam path and the losses are multidirectional charged particle showers, for the first time a dedicated set-up with an incident accelerator beam impinging directly on the optical fibre was used for optimizing the collection efficiency of the Cherenkov effect as a function of the incident angle by changing the fibre direction. For this purpose large core fibres were used together with the latest generation silicon detector instead of the standard photomultiplier tubes commonly used for Cherenkov beam loss monitoring. The experiments described in this contribution aim to demonstrate the suitability of the optical fibre sensor for loss monitoring, to optimize the Collection Efficiency (CE) of the Cherenkov photons inside the fibre as a function of the particle incident angle, to calibrate the sensor and calculate its sensitivity, and to understand the limits of temporal resolution of losses from different bunches in the accelerator.

The procedure for calculating the resistive wall impedance is simplified using Gaussian elimination with a sufficiently large floating point precision. This procedure generalises readily to the multilayer beam pipe wall. We apply this to investigate the effect of NEG coating on the transverse wake field coupling between electron bunches in the ILC damping ring. For a 5 GeV electron beam and 3 cm radius aluminium beam pipe, a 1 μm thick NEG coating is found to increase the impedance around 10 GHz. The wake field over a distance of 300 km around the ring is required for the study of the multi-bunch instabilities. This has to be obtained by Fourier transforming over a very wide range of frequencies. To overcome the computation problem, we developed a way of splitting up the frequencies into three overlapping ranges, and then joining the transforms together to obtain the overall wake field. The results for a few NEG coating thicknesses are presented.

We demonstrate that the normalised phase space can be used to improve the quality of the reconstructed image in phase space tomography. This study uses the Filtered Back Projection (FBP) for reconstruction. We simulate the tomographic projections of a Gaussian phase space distribution in real phase space and in normalised phase space. The reconstruction can be carried out in real phase space directly. It can also be done first in normalised phase space, and then the co-ordinates can be transformed to real phase space. Using FBP, we show that the latter procedure produces images that agree well with the original distribution even when there are only three angles. It also gives better resolution for a more complex distribution, which we simulate with a random collection of Gaussian spots.

This work reports the use of an infrared spectroscopic version of scanning near-field optical microscopy (IR-SNOM) and shows that it is possible to reveal subcellular entities via their chemical constituents in a label-free human oesophageal adenocarcinoma cell (OE33). This work presents the first high spatial resolution (similar to 0.15 mu m) study of features imaged at various wavelengths within a cancer cell. The clear illumination of sub-micron sized moieties within a cell is a major step forward and is a key requirement for understanding cancer and for the study of other diseases and healthy tissue. The stable and tuneable light source was provided by the infrared free electron laser on the ALICE accelerator at Daresbury. The images reveal a structure with a size and wavelength absorption that are consistent with a chromosome and open the possibility of observing other localized structures, such as microvesicles, that play an important role in the development and spread of cancers.

In high chromaticity circular accelerators, rapid decoherence of the betatron motion of a particle beam can make the measurement of lattice and bunch values, such as Courant-Snyder parameters and betatron amplitude, difficult. A method for reconstructing the momentum distribution of a beam from beam position measurements is presented. Further analysis of the same beam position monitor data allows estimates to be made of the Courant-Snyder parameters and the amplitude of coherent betatron oscillation of the beam. The methods are tested through application to data taken on the linear nonscaling fixed field alternating gradient accelerator, EMMA.

This report describes the conceptual design of a proposed free electron laser test facility called CLARA that will be a major upgrade to the existing VELA accelerator test facility at Daresbury Laboratory in the UK. CLARA will be able to test a number of new free electron laser schemes that have been proposed but require a proof of principle experiment to confirm that they perform as predicted. The primary focus of CLARA will be on ultra short photon pulse generation which will take free electron lasers into a whole new regime, enabling a new area of photon science to emerge.

We show that the combination of a scanning near field optical microscope and an infra-red free electron laser yields chemical images with sub-cellular spatial resolution that have the potential to provide a diagnostic for oesophageal adenocarcinoma.

We describe a new technique for low-emittance tuning of electron and positron storage rings. This technique is based on calibration of the beam position monitors (BPMs) using excitation of the normal modes of the beam motion, and has benefits over conventional methods. It is relatively fast and straightforward to apply, it can be as easily applied to a large ring as to a small ring, and the tuning for low emittance becomes completely insensitive to BPM gain and alignment errors that can be difficult to determine accurately. We discuss the theory behind the technique, present some simulation results illustrating that it is highly effective and robust for low-emittance tuning, and describe the results of some initial experimental tests on the CesrTA storage ring.

Injection of fresh bunches into a storage ring can induce jitter in the stored bunches. For machines demanding beams of very low emittance and high stability, such as the damping rings of a future linear collider or the storage rings of a super flavor factory, this could be a potential performance limitation. We present an analysis, for the International Linear Collider (ILC) damping rings, of the transverse jitter induced on the extracted bunches from the jitter on the injected bunches, with the coupling between bunches mediated by the resistive-wall wakefield of the vacuum chamber. We find that it is important to include details of the local transverse focusing around the ring. We consider the impact of the finite thickness of the beam pipe wall, and of nonevaporable getter coating on the inside surface: in the parameter regime of the ILC damping rings, we find that the results are only slightly modified compared to an approximation to the resistive-wall wakefield based on a single-layer wall of infinite thickness. The results from our simulations indicate a tight specification on the jitter of the injected bunches.

Very low emittances and small beta functions at the interaction point(IP) are needed to achieve the design luminosity of 1036 cm-2 s-1 for a SuperB project. Two rings of 4 and 7 GeV have been designed with the same emittances and damping times. A new Final Focus section has also been designed to strongly squeeze the colliding beams both in the horizontal and the vertical plane at IP, while providing local correction of the large chromaticity and exploiting the large crossing angle and crab waist concepts. Lattice features and chromaticity correction schemes will be discussed here. Dynamic apertures, with damping wigglers similar to those of ILC, will also be presented.

We describe the results of studies comparing differentoptions for the baseline configuration of the ILC damping rings. Theprincipal configuration decisions apply to the circumference, beamenergy, lattice type, and technology options for key components,including the injection/extraction kickers and the damping wigglers. Toarrive at our recommended configuration, we performed detailed studies ofa range of lattices representing a variety of different configurationoptions; these lattices are described in Chapter 2. The results of thevarious studies are reported in chapters covering issues of beamdynamics, technical subsystems, costs, and commissioning, reliability andupgradeability. Our detailed recommendations for the baselineconfiguration are given in Chapter 7, where we also outline furtherresearch and development that is needed before a machine using ourrecommended configuration can be built and operated successfully. In thesame chapter, we suggest possible alternatives to the baselineconfiguration.

We report the results obtained from the use of ORM analysis at the KEK-ATF to reduce the equilibrium vertical emittance. Measurements of the vertical beam size using a laser wire indicate that the vertical emittance was successfully reduced from 12 pm to around 6 pm (at a bunch charge of 7e9 particles) using ORM analysis.

Author(s): Wolski, Andrzej | Abstract: The ILC damping rings will need a large acceptance to ensure good injection efficiency for the high-emittance, high-power beam from the positron source. The damping rings also need to have very low natural emittance for the collider to reach good luminosity. Meeting the simultaneous requirements for large dynamic aperture and low natural emittance presents a challenge for the lattice design. Previous designs have been based on theoretical minimumum emittance cells in the arcs; here, we present two lattice designs using simple FODO cells. The first design is for a 5 GeV ring with 16 km circumference and a layout similar to the TESLA "dogbone" damping ring. The second design is based on the same optics, but the circumference is reduced to 6.3 km by eliminating part of the long straight sections; this results in a small improvement in the dynamic aperture. The shorter ring also operates at the lower energy of 3.74 GeV. A drawback with both designs is that the high dispersion in the arcs leads to a large momentum compaction, which in turn leads to a requirement for a very high RF voltage, and a large value for the synchrotron tune. As well as presenting the designs and an analysis of the dynamic aperture in each lattice, we briefly consider the collective effects and, for the 16 km lattice, discuss the coupling bumps needed to reduce the space-charge tune shift.

The damping rings of a future linear collider will have demanding alignment and stability requirements in order to achieve the low vertical emittance necessary for high luminosity. The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK has successfully demonstrated the vertical emittance below 5 pm that is specified for the GLC/NLC Main Damping Rings. One contribution to this accomplishment has been the use of Beam Based Alignment (BBA) techniques. The mode of operation of the ATF presents particular challenges for BBA, and we describe here how we have deduced the offsets of the BPMs with respect to the quadrupoles. We also discuss a technique that allows for direct measurements of the beam-to-quad offsets.

The consequences of beam conditioning in four example cases [VISA, a soft x-ray free-electron laser (FEL), LCLS, and a “Greenfield” FEL] are examined. It is shown that in emittance limited cases, proper conditioning reduces sensitivity to the transverse emittance and, furthermore, allows for stronger focusing in the undulator. Simulations show higher saturation power, with gain lengths reduced by a factor of 2 or more. The beam dynamics in a general conditioning system are studied, with “matching conditions” derived for achieving conditioning without growth in the effective emittance. Various conditioning lattices are considered, and expressions derived for the amount of conditioning provided in each case when the matching conditions are satisfied. These results show that there is no fundamental obstacle to producing beam conditioning, and that the problem can be reduced to one of proper lattice design. Nevertheless, beam conditioning will not be easy to implement in practice.

We present an overview of collective effects in a proposed ultrafast X-ray facility, based on a recirculating linac. The facility requires a small vertical emittance of 0.4 mm-mrad and is designed to operate with a "flat bunch" with a large emittance ratio. Emittance control from the electron source at the RF photocathode to the photon production chain of undulators, including understanding and mitigation of collective effects, is critical to successful machine operation. Key aspects of accelerator physics involved in beam break-up, coherent synchrotron radiation, resistive wall impedance and other effects have been addressed and reported here.

LOCO is a computer code for analysis of the linear optics in a storage ring based on the closed orbit response to steering magnets. The analysis provides information on focusing errors, BPM gain and rotation errors, and local coupling. Here, we discuss the details of the LOCO implementation at the KEK-ATF Damping Ring, and report the initial results. Some of the information obtained, for example on the BPM gain and coupling errors, has not previously been determined. We discuss the possibility of using the data provided by the LOCO analysis to reduce the vertical emittance of the ATF beam.

The consequences of beam conditioning in four example cases (VISA, a Soft X-Ray FEL, LCLS and a ''Greenfield'' FEL) are examined. We describe the design of a proposed source of ultra‐fast synchrotron radiation x‐ray pulses based on a recirculating superconducting linac, with an integrated array of ultrafast laser systems. The source produces x‐ray pulses with duration of 10–50 fs at a 10 kHz repetition rate, with tunability from EUV to hard x‐ray regimes, and optimized for the study of ultra‐fast dynamics. A high‐brightness rf photocathode provides electron bunches. An injector linac accelerates the beam to the 100 MeV range, and is followed by four passes through a 700 MeV recirculating linac. Ultrafast hard x‐ray pulses are obtained by a combination of electron bunch manipulation, transverse temporal correlation of the electrons, and x‐ray pulse compression. EUV and soft x‐ray pulses as short as 10 fs are generated in a harmonic‐cascade free electron laser scheme. We describe the facility major systems and peformance.

For synchrotron light sources and for damping rings of linear colliders it is important to be able to minimize the vertical emittance and to correct the spurious vertical dispersion. This allows one to maximize the brightness and/or the luminosity. A commonly used tool to measure the skew error distribution is the analysis of orbit response matrices using codes like LOCO. Using the new Matlab version of LOCO and 18 newly installed power supplies for individual skew quadrupoles at the ALS the emittance ratio could be reduced below 0.1% at 1.9 GeV yielding a vertical emittance of about 5 pm. At those very low emittances, additional effects like intra beam scattering become more important, potentially limiting the minimum emittance for machine like the damping rings of linear colliders

The KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) damping ring is a prototype low emittance source for the NLC/JLC linear collider. To achieve the goal normalized vertical emittance {gamma}{var_epsilon}{sub y} = 20 nm-rad, magnet placement accuracy better than 30 mm must be achieved. Accurate beam-based alignment (BBA) is required. The ATF arc optics uses a FOBO cell with two horizontally focusing quadrupoles, two sextupoles and a horizontally defocusing gradient dipole, all of which must be aligned with BBA. BBA at ATF uses the quadrupole and sextupole trim windings to find the trajectory through the center of each magnet. The results can be interpreted to assess the accuracy of the mechanical alignment and the beam position monitor offsets.

Modifications to the original racetrack lattice concept as used in the feasibility study of the DIAMOND light source project are presented. Double bend achromat structures with both 16 and 20 cells are described, with 4 fold superperiodicity. The production of higher brightness beams through lower emittance is achieved by optics solutions having finite dispersion in the long straights. The implications of insertion device minimum gaps and of the beam energy spread are discussed with reference to the specification of the radiation spectrum required by users.

The ALICE tomography section at Daresbury is a diagnostic setup in the injection line of EMMA, the world's first non-scaling FFAG accelerator. We present our measurements and analysis of the transverse emittance, Twiss parameters and phase space distribution of the electron beam that is injected into EMMA. The measurements are carried out at 12 MeV, for bunch charges from 20 to 80 pC. Quadrupole scans and tomography are used. The results show that space charge effect does not change the beam emittance significantly over the length of the tomography section. Starting from projections of the beam images, the quadrupole scan technique can be applied to give the emittance and Twiss parameters. The same projections can be processed using tomography to give the phase space distribution. A careful treatment of the background noise is required to produce consistent emittances between quadrupole scans at different locations. Extending this in a natural way to tomography, we are also able to remove most of the the streaking artefacts from reconstructions obtained using the Filtered Back Projection technique.

We present a method to measure and reconstruct the full 4D transverse phase space of a particle beam. The method assumes that it is possible to freely and independently rotate the separate 2D transverse phase spaces in the horizontal and vertical directions. Using images of the beam that would be captured on a screen, we develop a mathematical procedure that will reconstruct the full 4D particle distribution. We simulate this procedure for a hypothetical distribution and show that the reconstruction agrees with the actual distribution. Finally, we demonstrate for the practical case of a two-quadrupole setup that it is indeed possible to adjust the quadrupole strengths so that the separate 2D transverse phase spaces can be rotated independently. However, in this setup, the rotation angles are restricted to smaller ranges. Even so, the reconstructed results reproduce the actual distribution clearly.

In low emittance synchrotron light sources the main source of beam loss is intrabeam or Touschek scattering. In most cases the Touschek scattered particles get lost on the vacuum chamber with the narrowest vertical gap. The particles reach the vertical chamber from either diffusion or coupling of the particle motion from the horizontal to the vertical plane. The beam lifetime can be very sensitive to the size of the vertical chamber that can limit the dynamic momentum aperture. The reduction in lifetime limits the minimum size of the chamber that can be installed in the ring. In this paper we examine the effect of the size of the vertical apertures on the beam lifetime at the ALS under various different machine conditions. We show that there are conditions where one can make the beam lifetime much less sensitive to the size of the vertical aperture.

Intra-beam scattering (IBS) potentially limits the minimum emittance of low-energy storage rings, and this effect strongly influences the choice of energy of damping rings for linear colliders. The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a third-generation synchrotron light source operating with high-intensity, low-emittance beams at energies up to 2 GeV. It can operate with an emittance coupling of below 1%. We present measurements of the beam growth in three dimensions as a function of current, for normalized natural horizontal emittances of approximately 1-10 mm-mrad at energies of 0.7-1.5 GeV, values comparable to the parameters in an NLC damping ring. Using a dedicated diagnostic beamline with an X-ray scintillator imaging system, measurements of the transverse beamsize are made, simultaneously with bunch length measurements using an optical streak camera. The bunch volume growth as a function of bunch current is compared with theoretical estimates, for a parameter space of IBS, where very little experimental data exists so far.

We present an updated design for a proposed source of ultra-fast synchrotron radiation pulses based on a recirculating superconducting linac, in particular the incorporation of EUV and soft x-ray production. The project has been named LUX - Linac-based Ultrafast X-ray facility. The source produces intense x-ray pulses with duration of 10-100 fs at a 10 kHz repetition rate, with synchronization of 10's fs, optimized for the study of ultra-fast dynamics. The photon range covers the EUV to hard x-ray spectrum by use of seeded harmonic generation in undulators, and a specialized technique for ultra-short-pulse photon production in the 1-10 keV range. High-brightness rf photocathodes produce electron bunches which are optimized either for coherent emission in free-electron lasers, or to provide a large x/y emittance ration and small vertical emittance which allows for manipulation to produce short-pulse hard x-rays. An injector linac accelerates the beam to 120 MeV, and is followed by four passes through a 600-720 MeV recirculating linac. We outline the major technical components of the proposed facility.
