Abstract: The SuperCam instrument suite provides the Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance, with a number of versatile remote-sensing techniques that can be used at long distance as well as within the robotic-arm workspace. These include laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible and infrared (VISIR; separately referred to as VIS and IR) reflectance spectroscopy. A remote micro-imager (RMI) provides high-resolution color context imaging, and a microphone can be used as a stand-alone tool for environmental studies or to determine physical properties of rocks and soils from shock waves of laser-produced plasmas. SuperCam is built in three parts: The mast unit (MU), consisting of the laser, telescope, RMI, IR spectrometer, and associated electronics, is described in a companion paper. The on-board calibration targets are described in another companion paper. Here we describe SuperCam's body unit (BU) and testing of the integrated instrument. The BU, mounted inside the rover body, receives light from the MU via a 5.8 m optical fiber. The light is split into three wavelength bands by a demultiplexer, and is routed via fiber bundles to three optical spectrometers, two of which (UV and violet; 245-340 and 385-465 nm) are crossed Czerny-Turner reflection spectrometers, nearly identical to their counterparts on ChemCam. The third is a high-efficiency transmission spectrometer containing an optical intensifier capable of gating exposures to 100 ns or longer, with variable delay times relative to the laser pulse. This spectrometer covers 535-853 nm ( 105 - 7070 cm − 1 Raman shift relative to the 532 nm green laser beam) with 12 cm − 1 full-width at half-maximum peak resolution in the Raman fingerprint region. The BU electronics boards interface with the rover and control the instrument, returning data to the rover. Thermal systems maintain a warm temperature during cruise to Mars to avoid contamination on the optics, and cool the detectors during operations on Mars. Results obtained with the integrated instrument demonstrate its capabilities for LIBS, for which a library of 332 standards was developed. Examples of Raman and VISIR spectroscopy are shown, demonstrating clear mineral identification with both techniques. Luminescence spectra demonstrate the utility of having both spectral and temporal dimensions. Abstract: The common co-occurrence of autoimmune systemic diseases in patients with neurological disorders and antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) suggests a shared genetic predisposition to these disorders. However, the nature and frequency of familial aggregation of autoimmune diseases, which might also support this hypothesis, have been poorly investigated. Herein, an exploratory, interview-based study was conducted with the aim of describing the autoimmune diseases displayed by the relatives of GAD65 neurological patients, their frequency, kinship, and potential patterns of inheritance. Patients were enrolled only if they had GAD65 antibodies in the cerebrospinal fluid and typical clinical phenotypes associated with such antibodies (stiff-person syndrome, cerebellar ataxia, limbic encephalitis, or temporal lobe epilepsy). A total of 65 patients were included in the study, and 44/65 (67.7%) reported family history of autoimmunity, including first-degree relatives in 36/65 (55.4%); the sibling recurrence risk (λS) was 5.5, reinforcing the hypothesis of an underlying strong genetic predisposition. Most pedigrees with familial autoimmunity (38/44, 86.4%) showed multiple autoimmune diseases, all but 2 of them with diabetes mellitus or autoimmune thyroid disease, therefore resembling autoimmune polyendocrine syndromes. Inheritance patterns were diverse, possibly autosomal dominant in 17/44 (38.6%) pedigrees or autosomal recessive in 5/44 (11.4%), and un-defined or complex in 24/44 (54.5%). However, a total of 21/65 (32.3%) patients had no identified family history of autoimmunity. In conclusion, these results suggest a variable and heterogeneous genetic predisposition to GAD65 neurological disorders, possibly involving multiple loci and modes of inheritance with different contribution in each family.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence of COVID-19 disease in the French national population of dialysis patients, their course of illness and to identify the risk factors associated with mortality. Our study included all patients on dialysis recorded in the French REIN Registry in April 2020. Clinical characteristics at last follow-up and the evolution of COVID-19 illness severity over time were recorded for diagnosed cases (either suspicious clinical symptoms, characteristic signs on the chest scan or a positive reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) for SARS-CoV-2. A total of 1,621 infected patients were reported on the REIN registry from March 16th, 2020 to May 4th, 2020. Of these, 344 died. The prevalence of COVID-19 patients varied from less than 1% to 10% between regions. The probability of being a case was higher in males, patients with diabetes, those in need of assistance for transfer or treated at a self-care unit. Dialysis at home was associated with a lower probability of being infected as was being a smoker, a former smoker, having an active malignancy, or peripheral vascular disease. Mortality in diagnosed cases (21%) was associated with the same causes as in the general population. Higher age, hypoalbuminemia and the presence of an ischemic heart disease were statistically independently associated with a higher risk of death. Being treated at a selfcare unit was associated with a lower risk. 4. Comparison of gradient-based and gradient-enhanced response-surface-based optimizers

Abstract: This paper deals with aerodynamic shape optimization using a high-fidelity solver. Because of the computational cost needed to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier--Stokes equations, the performance of the shape must be improved using very few objective function evaluations, despite the high number of design variables. In our framework, the reference algorithm is a quasi-Newton gradient optimizer. An adjoint method inexpensively computes the sensitivities of the functions, with respect to design variables, to build the gradient of the objective function. As usual, aerodynamic functions show numerous local optima when the shape varies, and a more global optimizer is expected to be beneficial. Consequently, a kriging-based optimizer is set up and described. It uses an original sampling refinement process that adds up to three points per iteration by using a balancing between function minimization and error minimization. To efficiently apply this algorithm to high-dimensional problems, the same sampling process is reused to form a cokriging (gradient-enhanced model) based optimizer. A comparative study is then described on two drag-minimization problems depending on 6 and 45 design variables. This study was conducted using an original set of performance criteria, characterizing the strength and weakness of each optimizer in terms of improvement, cost, exploration, and exploitation. 5. Block-Jacobi implicit algorithms for the time spectral method

Abstract: Many industrial applications involve flows periodic in time. Such flows are not simulated with enough efficiency when using classical unsteady techniques, as a transient regime must be bypassed. New techniques, dedicated to time-periodic flows and based on Fourier analysis, have been developed recently. Among these, the time spectral method casts a time-periodic flow computation in several coupled steady computations, corresponding to a uniform sampling of the period. Up until now, the steady states were reached using an explicit pseudotime algorithm. Thus, very small time steps were needed and the convergence rate slowed down when increasing the number of harmonics. In this paper, a block-Jacobi approach is presented to solve the stationary problems with an implicit algorithm. Numerical simulations show, on one hand, the good quality of the results and, on the other hand, the interest of the proposed method to reduce the sensitivity of computations to a large number of harmonics.

Abstract: cited By 0; International audience; We propose spark plasma sintering (SPS) as a technique to prepare reference targets for Raman and other spectroscopy instruments involved in future space missions and more generally in-field work. We have tested the effect of SPS on different international standards that are available in the form of minerals and rocks powders. Advantages and potential issues of SPS were considered by analyzing the Raman signal and mechanical properties of the sintered targets. The shape is well controlled; the rupture toughness is enhanced, and the homogeneous distribution of the mineral phases is verified. A suite of calibration targets has thus been implemented for the SuperCam instrument on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Mars 2020 rover, and SPS may be preferred for future missions as well. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: Renal cell carcinoma can metastasize to several locations but rarely in muscles. However, this possibility must never be overlooked because muscle metastases may occur a very long time after the initial nephrectomy. So the post-operative follow-up, according to the recommendations, with thoraco-abdomino-pelvic imaging (computed tomography or nuclear magnetic resonance) allowing to detect metastases, including muscle metastases in the trunk, does not have to neglect the metastases located in the members. This search is based upon a thorough clinical examination, completed by targeted imaging in case of symptoms and/or palpable mass.

Abstract: International audience; A 43-year-old French man presented with fever, arthralgia, headache, night sweats and dry cough, 3 weeks after returning from Brazil. Physical examination was normal. He reported a visit at the botanic garden of Rio de Janeiro during a 7-day-trip. Blood tests revealed lymphocytosis (5.28G/L), C-reactive protein at 50mg/L, and cholestatic hepatitis (ASAT 148UI/L, ALAT 319UI/L, gamma-GT: 523UI/L, alkaline phosphatase: 234UI/L). Microbiological investigations were negative for the following: blood cultures, malaria quick test, Legionella pneumophila, Streptococcus pneumonia antigenuria; serology for HIV, Histoplasma, Brucella, Leptospira, blood PCR for C. burnetii, Histoplasma, Leptospira, culture and PCR for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Chest CT-Scan showed bilateral lower lobes pulmonary condensations, two upper left supracentimetric nodules, a right hilar lymphadenopathy and a minimal bilateral pleural effusion.

Abstract: Watermelon stomach or gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) syndrome is an uncommon cause of sometimes severe upper gastro-intestinal bleeding. Essentially based on a pathognomonic endoscopic appearance, its diagnosis may be unrecognised because mistaken with portal hypertensive gastropathy, while treatment of these two entities is different. Its etiopathogeny remains still unclear, even if it is frequently associated with different systemic illnesses as hepatic cirrhosis, autoimmune disorders and chronic renal failure. The mechanism inducing these vascular ectasia may be linked with mechanical stress on submucosal vessels due to antropyloric peristaltic motility dysfunction modulated by neurohormonal vasoactive alterations. Because medical therapies are not very satisfactory, among the endoscopic modalities, argon plasma coagulation seems to be actually the first-line treatment because the most effective and safe. However, surgical antrectomy may be sometimes necessary. Recently GAVE syndrome appeared as a new adverse reaction of imatinib mesylate, one of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors used in chronic myeloid leukemia, and we report here the observation of such a pathology in one patient treated at the same time by haemodialysis and by imatinib mesylate for chronic myeloid leukemia.

10. Physiological differences between wild and cultured bivalves in Prince Edward Island, Canada

Abstract: Bivalve culture in Canada increased by 25% from 2000 to 2016. In Prince Edward Island (PEI), bivalves are cultivated in bays and estuaries and there is limited space for further aquaculture expansion. Thus, there is merit in developing a numerical model determining the abundance of bivalve populations in relation to their food availability in order to assess the carrying capacity of shellfish growing areas. This modelling will take into account the different bivalve species present in the bay, as the cultivated Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea virginica and wild, M. edulis, C. virginica, Mya arenaria and Mercenaria mercenaria. As a first step toward a modelling goal, this study compared the physiological differences of the 6 bivalve groups. Three physiological parameters were measured: clearance rate, oxygen consumption and assimilation to determine the energy budget or scope for growth (SFG). These measurements were carried out on individuals contained in metabolic chamber at summer and autumn temperatures (20 and 8 °C, respectively). Our results show that M. edulis is best adapted to these temperature in PEI as it maintains high SFG at both temperatures. For C. virginica and M. arenaria, high physiological parameters under summer conditions were observed, followed by a decrease in autumn. For M. mercenaria rates were low at both temperatures indicating a persistently low growth potential. These results demonstrate the adaptive physiological capacity of each species and provide insight into the underlying reasons some species such as C. virginica and M. mercenaria are at their northern distribution limit in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Finally, no differences in the SFG between cultivated and wild bivalves have been observed. These results are discussed within the context of estimating the impact of each bivalve group in bays environment from PEI and particularly on food availability.

Abstract: Bariatric surgery is now recognized as a sure and effective way for weight reduction in morbid obesity. However some procedures induce intestinal malabsorption leading to enteric hyperoxaluria. So bariatric surgery could place these patients not only at risk for nephrolithiasis but also for oxalate induced nephropathy and chronic renal failure. Because of the growing incidence of obesity worldwide, physicians and patients should be aware of such potential complications. There is no mean to discuss this treatment because of its spectacular efficiency on obesity and its comorbidities. But it is necessary to choose the surgical technique according to the risk factors of the patients. Following surgery, preventive treatment strategies are indicated, such as modified dietary lifestyle and specific drugs as we suggested to limit or even avoid these complications. However observance could fail in the long term. In case of oxalate nephropathy, surgery may be proposed to restore the intestinal tract but with the risk of overweight relapse. To illustrate this matter, we report here significant observations of three patients, which, having successfully benefited from the same bariatric surgery, have presented lithiasic complications for two of them and oxalate nephropathy leading to chronic renal failure and hemodialysis for the third.

Abstract: Several alternative anticoagulation drugs are now available for patients with heparin induced thrombocytopenia type II (HIT II). However, their indication is not yet reaching a consensus. Moreover, some of them have not yet their marketing approval. The importantly use in hemodialyzed patients should be taken with caution since most of them are excreted by the kidneys. The use of fondaparinux, which exerts high anti-Xa activity, is not well documented. We report here our experience on the use of fondaparinux in an hemodialyzed patient with HIT II, not only as anticoagulation during hemodialysis sessions but also as interdialytic anticoagulation locking solution of her central venous catheter. The use of fondaparinux seems to us simple enough (even if its ready-for-use syringe requires adjustments to deliver the required doses) and its efficacy, safety and economic cost lead us to think that it is an indication of choice for an alternative anticoagulation in hemodialyzed patients with HIT II. Control prospective trials should be performed in order to confirm the preliminary favourable data and to support the proposal of marketing approval in this indication.

Abstract: A parallel automated Chimera overset grid algorithm for complex configurations is presented in this paper. The algorithm is based on the implicit hole cutting (IHC) algorithm presented by Lee and Baeder, which is enhanced by several methodologies to eliminate shortcomings in the original method. The resulting overall algorithm is more general than the IHC algorithm, while preserving the high degree of automation of the original method. Abstract: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) show a continuing improvement in their life expectancy thanks to advances in knowledge of this disorder, allowing better multidisciplinary routine monitoring and earlier therapeutic interventions. Likewise, more than of 40% of these patients are adults and CF is no more only a pediatric disease. Due to their higher life expectancy, CF patients present new and unusual complications that were not recorded before. Among them, some renal disorders have to be added to the CF-related renal diseases. They are due to frequent and prolonged exposure to various potentially nephrotoxic factors that need to be taken into account early enough in order to avoid renal failure : essentially risk factors for kidney stones formation, bacterial infections with their associated immune complexes diseases, nephrotoxic effects of antibiotics, diabetes mellitus. Because we observed a case of IgA glomerulonephritis in a 35-year-old patient with cystic fibrosis, we have searched about all these renal consequences due to this affection and here report them.

16. Processing Techniques to Reduce Toxicity and Antinutrients of Cassava for Use as a Staple Food

Abstract: Cassava is a valuable source of food for developing countries, but it contains highly toxic cyanogen compounds and antinutrients. Cyanogens are found in 3 forms in cassava: cyanogenic glucoside (95% linamarin and 5% lotaustratin), cyanohydrins, and free cyanide. Different processing techniques exist to remove cyanogens and their effectiveness depends on the processing steps and the sequence utilized, and it often is time-dependent. Pounding or crushing is the most effective for cyanogenic glucoside removal because it ruptures cell compartments, thus allowing direct contact between linamarin and the enzyme linamarase that catalyzes the hydrolytic breakdown. Crushing and sun-drying cassava roots made into flour removes 96% to 99% of total cyanogens, whereas soaking and sun-drying into lafun or fufu, or soaking and fermenting and roasting into gari or farina, removes about 98% of cyanogens. For cassava leaves, which have 10 times more cyanogens than roots, pounding and boiling in water is an efficient process to remove about 99% of cyanogens. Other strategies to reduce toxicity include development of low-cyanogen cassava varieties and cassava transgenic lines with accelerated cyanogenesis during processing. Although phytate and polyphenols have antioxidant properties, they interfere with digestion and uptake of nutrients. Fermentation and oven-drying are efficient processing methods to remove phytate (85.6%) and polyphenols (52%), respectively, from cassava roots. Sun-drying the leaves, with or without prior steaming or shredding, removes about 60% phytate. Cassava is a nutritionally strategic famine crop for developing countries and, therefore, reducing its toxicity and improving its nutritional value is crucial.

Abstract: Many industrial applications involve flows periodic in time. Such flows are not simulated with enough efficiency when using classical unsteady techniques, as a transient regime must be bypassed. New techniques, dedicated to time-periodic flows and based on Fourier analysis, have been developed recently. Among these, the time spectral method casts a time-periodic flow computation in several coupled steady computations, corresponding to a uniform sampling of the period. Up until now, the steady states were reached using an explicit pseudotime algorithm. Thus, very small time steps were needed and the convergence rate slowed down when increasing the number of harmonics. In this paper, a block-Jacobi approach is presented to solve the stationary problems with an implicit algorithm. Numerical simulations show, on one hand, the good quality of the results and, on the other hand, the interest of the proposed method to reduce the sensitivity of computations to a large number of harmonics.

Abstract: Resume Lors d'une prise en charge d'œdemes, la decouverte d'une hypoprotidemie sans cause nutritionnelle, renale, hepatique ou cardiaque, doit faire rechercher une cause digestive exsudative, dont la gastrite lymphocytaire, comme les auteurs en rapportent une nouvelle observation chez une femme de 73 ans. A l'endoscopie, l'aspect est celui d'une gastrite varioliforme, mais la constatation d'une infiltration massive, dense et diffuse, de l'epithelium gastrique par des lymphocytes en fait une entite histopathologique bien a part au sein des gastropathies. Son etiopathogenie reste encore indeterminee mais les inhibiteurs de la pompe a protons constituent un traitement efficace.

Abstract: HemoCue Hb 201+ is a portable photometric analyser providing easy, rapid and accurate determination of hemoglobin from arterial, venous or capillary blood. It is worth that dialysis units have knowledge of its use for a close hematologic monitoring of their patients and a judicious management of erythropoietin (EPO). For the autodialysis > centers, it allows a flexibility that private laboratories cannot have in daily practice. Therefore authors present this device and the evaluation they obtained from 148 hemoglobin measures. Then they expose the advantages and the indications of its use.

Abstract: Bad dental status is very often observed in hemodialyzed patients due to the fact of a frequent poor oral hygiene and, in addition of the traditional risk factors, the consequences of uraemic state and its treatment. However , among such immunodepressed patients, oral and dental lesions represent a risk of septic complications. Moreover some works point out the prevalence of inflammation and denutrition due to dental lesions in the uraemic population, with potential atherosclerosis. Therefore, in order to anticipate all these adverse effects and to restore their mouth to health, patients have to be encouraged to have regularly a full dental evaluation and correction if not elimination of all potential sources of infection and other complications. To ensure the best treatment, a close collaboration has to be established with dental practitioners who must be aware and convinced of the complexity of such patients: immunodepression due to uraemic state and sometimes to drug therapy; importance of prophylactic antibiotic therapy surrounding dental cares; cautions to hemostasis circumstances; adjusted use of some medications. To illustrate this matter, we report here a study involving 96 hemodialyzed patients who were investigated by panoramic radiography and clinical cross- examination about their dental complaints and habits. We then expose our practices and detail our collaboration with their dentists in establishing a plan of dental treatment.

Abstract: A 58 year-old woman developed an acute renal failure very quickly after ingestion of two 500 mg tablets of ciprofloxacin, without any other identifiable risk factor. Renal biopsy was performed. No sign of acute interstitial nephritis was observed but tubular lesions were found, accompanied by deposits of a brown-yellowish substance identified by infrared microscopy as a ciprofloxacin salt. The outcome was favourable. This observation gives the opportunity to remind the different forms of quinolone-induced renal injury and to discuss the possible ways for preventing renal side-effects related to the quinolone use.

Abstract: Presently, improving the accuracy and reducing computational costs are still two major CFD objectives often considered incompatible. This paper proposes to solve this dilemma by developing an adaptive mesh refinement method in order to integrate the 3D Euler and Navier–Stokes equations on structured meshes, where a local multigrid method is used to accelerate convergence for steady compressible flows. The time integration method is a LU-SGS method (AIAA J 1988; 26: 1025–1026) associated with a spatial Jameson-type scheme (Numerical solutions of the Euler equations by finite volume methods using Runge–Kutta time-stepping schemes. AIAA Paper, 81-1259, 1981). Computations of turbulent flows are handled by the standard k–ω model of Wilcox (AIAA J 1994; 32: 247–255). A coarse grid correction, based on composite residuals, has been devised in order to enforce the coupling between the different grid levels and to accelerate the convergence. Abstract: The aim of this study is to describe the experience of three haemodialysis centres using indwelling femoral silicone catheter (model SSL 1220M, Medcomp, USA) in 55 patients, three with acute renal failure, one requiring plasmapheresis, and 51 with chronic renal failure but no other available vascular access. Sixty-four catheters were in place for a mean duration of 41.5 +/- 30 days. The rate of catheter-related complications, including mechanical problems, thromboses, and infections was low and they were never life-threatening. The results of the study suggest that femoral cannulation with modern flexible devices can be considered as a reliable temporary access, even for extended periods, with advantages exceeding those for subclavian and jugular routes.

Abstract: International audience; Confocal Raman spectroscopy is a technique with considerable potential for the non-invasive study of biological tissues and skin samples in vitro or in vivo. It can be used to study skin physiology and possible pathological conditions and to obtain data about molecular composition and the structure of skin, for example, water content, moisturization and changes in the skin barrier function can all be observed. In-depth measurements also allow biopharmaceutical studies, such as analyzing the rate of penetration of a drug and the biochemical changes that may be induced by an applied formulation. Confocal Raman microspectroscopy is now at such a stage of refinement that it opens up new vistas. The big leap forward in its ease of use enables this technology to be used as an analytical method by more and more non-specialist laboratories. This review gives an overview of the state of the art of this technology by presenting an update on the principles of Raman spectroscopy and then by looking at examples of new developments in in vivo and in vitro applications.

Abstract: A new fully integrated environment for compressible ow simulation on structured and unstructured zones coexisting within the same hybrid mesh is presented. This environment originates from the existing elsA a CFD software tool, developed by ONERA and CERFACS for structured grids, and widely used both in industry and research. Some con gurations can not be easily addressed with a fully structured mesh approach. An e cient way to overcome this drawback is to combine structured and unstructured zones in a single hybrid mesh. Structured zones are kept for sake of accuracy in boundary layers, wall clock e ciency and low memory consumption. Unstructured zones enable an easier mesh generation / adaptation process. This paper describes the extension of elsA to unstructured multi-element zones composed of hexahedra, tetrahedra, prisms and pyramids. A key feature is the treatment of structured / unstructured zone interfaces, performed with a mismatched abutting grid interface algorithm. We demonstrate that the Object-Oriented (OO) programming approach is useful and e cient to integrate unstructured data structures and numerical methods into the original software to form a single computational CFD kernel. Software design, numerical algorithm, structured/unstructured block interface treatment, CPU e ciency and parallel scalability, are discussed. Finally, validation examples demonstrating the project status are given.

Abstract: International audience; A computational methodology is presented to obtain a model reduction of the steady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations with a high-dimensional parameter space. It combines both a reduced-basis method and an adaptive sequential sampling technique. The reduced basis is made of the leading eigenvectors computed by a Singular Value Decomposition of the snapshot span basis. The sampling method uses an a posteriori error estimator combined with a leave-one-out algorithm. This methodology allows a dynamic building of surrogate models for aerodynamic flight data generation and for multidisciplinary design optimization with a small number of full numerical flow simulations. The efficiency of the method is assessed on an analytic test case and a classical aerodynamic transonic flow around a 2D profile.

Abstract: This study deals with unsteady numerical simulation of casing treatment in a stage of an axial compressor. The stall inception process is first investigated in the compressor with smooth wall. At low mass flow, the simulation shows the development of large reversed flow regions near the casing that leads to rotating stall. Then, a simulation is performed for a compressor stage with casing treatment. Despite a strong impact on the rotor casing flow, the operating range extension is low, meaning that other processes like rotor/stator interactions may play a role in the loss of stability.

Abstract: Efficient numerical tools coupled with high-performance computers, have become a key element of the design process in the fields of energy supply and transportation. However flow phenomena that occur in complex systems such as gas turbines and aircrafts are still not understood mainly because of the models that are needed. In fact, most computational fluid dynamics (CFD) predictions as found today in industry focus on a reduced or simplified version of the real system (such as a periodic sector) and are usually solved with a steady- state assumption. This paper shows how to overcome such barriers and how such a new challenge can be addressed by developing flow solvers running on high-end computing platforms, using thousands of computing cores. Parallel strategies used by modern flow solvers are discussed with particular emphases on mesh-partitioning, load balancing and communication. Two examples are used to illustrate these concepts: a multi-block structured code and an unstructured code. Parallel computing strategies used with both flow solvers are detailed and compared. This comparison indicates that mesh-partitioning and load balancing are more straightforward with unstructured grids than with multi-block structured meshes. However, the mesh-partitioning stage can be challenging for unstructured grids, mainly due to memory limitations of the newly developed massively parallel architectures. Finally, detailed investigations show that the impact of mesh-partitioning on the numerical CFD solutions, due to rounding errors and block splitting, may be of importance and should be accurately addressed before qualifying massively parallel CFD tools for a routine industrial use.

Abstract: From January 1986 to December 1990 we studied angiographically the subclavian-brachiocephalic vein of 100 patients dialysed by subclavian catheter for 50 (first group) and by internal jugular catheter for the 50 others (second group). These two groups were not statistically different as regards age (61.6 +/- 11.3 years in the first and 61 +/- 11.1 in the second), sex (48% and 56% were women), duration of catheter insertion (31 +/- 21.8 and 31.7 +/- 16 days), and the number of dialysis sessions (13.5 +/- 9.1 and 13.6 +/- 7.1). The type of catheters, the frequency of removal for poor flow (16% in both groups) or infections (6% in both groups), and the local nursing were similar in the two groups. The only difference was the side of cannulation: the right side in 58% of cases in group 1 and 78% in group 2. The angiographic study revealed a stenosis of the vein in 42% of the subclavian group and in 10% of the internal jugular group: a dramatic difference in favour of the internal jugular route, whose superiority over the subclavian route is asserted in respect of venous access of dialysed patients.

Abstract: This report describes how control integration between software components may be organised using an encapsulation technique combined with broadcast message passing : each software component, which is encapsulated within an integrated software component (IC), communicates by sending and receiving events. Events are emitted without the emitter knowing whether there are any receivers. The proposed mechanism can be used for intertool communication as well as for communication within a single tool.
