1. SigTools: Exploratory Visualization For Genomic Signals

Abstract: MotivationWith the advancement of sequencing technologies, genomic data sets are constantly being expanded by high volumes of different data types. One recently introduced data type in genomic science is genomic signals, which are usually short-read coverage measurements over the genome. An example of genomic signals is Epigenomic marks which are utilized to locate functional and nonfunctional elements in genome annotation studies. To understand and evaluate the results of such studies, one needs to understand and analyze the characteristics of the input data.ResultsSigTools is an R-based genomic signals visualization package developed with two objectives: 1) to facilitate genomic signals exploration in order to uncover insights for later model training, refinement, and development by including distribution and autocorrelation plots. 2) to enable genomic signals interpretation by including correlation, and aggregation plots. Moreover, Sigtools also provides text-based descriptive statistics of the given signals which can be practical when developing and evaluating learning models. We also include results from 2 case studies. The first examines several previously studied genomic signals called histone modifications. This use case demonstrates how SigTools can be beneficial for satisfying scientists’ curiosity in exploring and establishing recognized datasets. The second use case examines a dataset of novel chromatin state features which are novel genomic signals generated by a learning model. This use case demonstrates how SigTools can assist in exploring the characteristics and behavior of novel signals towards their interpretation. In addition, our corresponding web application, SigTools-Shiny, extends the accessibility scope of these modules to people who are more comfortable working with graphical user interfaces instead of command-line tools.AvailabilitySigTools source code, installation guide, and manual is available on http://github.com/shohre73.Contactshohre_masoumi@sfu.ca

3. Ist die Supplementierung der Ohrakupunktur bei operativer Zahnentfernung in Lokalanästhesie effektiv?

Abstract: Die Anwendung der Ohrakupunktur kann zur Reduktion von akuten Schmerzen beitragen. Zu deren Einsatz in der zahnmedizinischen Akutschmerztherapie nach oralchirurgischen Eingriffen ist die Datenlage unzureichend. Diese Studie untersuchte die Effektivitat der Ohrakupunktur als additive Analgesiemethode zusatzlich zur Lokalanasthesie bei der operativen Zahnentfernung. In einer prospektiven, offenen, nichtrandomisierten Pilotstudie (entsprechend der CONSORT-Veroffentlichung) wurden 2 Kohorten mit jeweils 50 Patienten mit der Indikation zur operativen Zahnentfernung unter Lokalanasthesie mit Articain mit oder ohne den zusatzlichen Einsatz einer Ohrakupunktur hinsichtlich des Primarparameters Schmerzintensitat in Ruhe und unter Kaubelastung postoperativ bis zu zehn Tage beobachtet. Die Zuordnung zur Akupunkturgruppe erfolgte nach Patientenpraferenz und nicht randomisiert. Sekundare Parameter waren Angst und Symptome wie Schwindel oder Ubelkeit. Die demografischen Daten und der Verbrauch von Lokalanasthetika in beiden Gruppen unterschieden sich nicht signifikant. Signifikante Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Gruppen bestanden zu den verschiedenen Messzeitpunkten im Ruhe- und Kauschmerz (ANOVA, p = 0,004, p = 0,007), ebenso in der Angstempfindung (ANOVA, p = 0,0001), der Anzahl der Patienten mit einer Analgetikaeinnahme (χ2-Test, p = 0,017) und deren postoperativem Analgetikaverbrauch (T-Test, 0,001). Die NRS fur postoperative Kopfschmerzen, Schwindel und Ubelkeit nahmen in beiden Gruppen nur geringe Werte an. Trotz der Moglichkeit eines Erhebungsbias und methodologischer Einschrankungen im Studiendesign weist diese Untersuchung auf schmerz- und angstmodulierende Eigenschaften der Ohrakupunktur in der postoperativen Phase nach operativer Zahnentfernung hin. Moglicherweise kann Ohrakupunktur als nebenwirkungsarmes additives Verfahren, besonders bei Patienten mit praoperativer Angst, zur Reduktion postoperativer Schmerzen beitragen.

4. EvoDNN - An Evolutionary Deep Neural Network with Heterogeneous Activation Functions

Abstract: Many problems in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics involve classification, such as the classification of cell samples into malignant (cancer) or benign (normal). For such tasks, we propose EvoDNN, an evolutionary deep neural network that employs an evolutionary algorithm to evolve deep heterogeneous feed-forward neural networks. While the majority of current feed-forward neural networks employ user defined homogeneous activation functions, EvoDNN creates heterogeneous multi-layer networks where each neuron’s activation function is not statically defined by the user, but dynamically optimized during evolution. The main advantage offered by EvoDNN lies in that the activation functions do not need to be differentiable. This feature gives users a great degree of flexibility over which activation functions EvoDNN can utilize. This paper demonstrates how EvoDNN can simultaneously optimize each neuron’s weight, bias, and activation function, and empirically shows a superior performance compared to a backpropagation-trained feed-forward neural network at the cost of additional training time. In addition, advantages of the deep architecture of EvoDNN over our earlier approach, EvoNN, which employed a single hidden layer are discussed.

Abstract: Background CT perfusion (CTP) and diffusion or perfusion MRI might assist patient selection for endovascular thrombectomy. We aimed to establish whether imaging assessments of irreversibly injured ischaemic core and potentially salvageable penumbra volumes were associated with functional outcome and whether they interacted with the treatment effect of endovascular thrombectomy on functional outcome.Methods In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the HERMES collaboration pooled patient-level data from all randomised controlled trials that compared endovascular thrombectomy (predominantly using stent retrievers) with standard medical therapy in patients with anterior circulation ischaemic stroke, published in PubMed from Jan 1,2010, to May 31, 2017. The primary endpoint was functional outcome, assessed by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at 90 days after stroke. Ischaemic core was estimated, before treatment with either endovascular thrombectomy or standard medical therapy, by CTP as relative cerebral blood flow less than 30% of normal brain blood flow or by MRI as an apparent diffusion coefficient less than 620 mu m(2)/s. Critically hypoperfused tissue was estimated as the volume of tissue with a CTP time to maximum longer than 6 s. Mismatch volume (ie, the estimated penumbral volume) was calculated as critically hypoperfused tissue volume minus ischaemic core volume. The association of ischaemic core and penumbral volumes with 90-day mRS score was analysed with multivariable logistic regression (functional independence, defined as mRS score 0-2) and ordinal logistic regression (functional improvement by at least one mRS category) in all patients and in a subset of those with more than 50% endovascular reperfusion, adjusted for baseline prognostic variables. The meta-analysis was prospectively designed by the HERMES executive committee, but not registered.Findings We identified seven studies with 1764 patients, all of which were included in the meta-analysis. CTP was available and assessable for 591 (34%) patients and diffusion MRI for 309 (18%) patients. Functional independence was worse in patients who had CTP versus those who had diffusion MRI, after adjustment for ischaemic core volume (odds ratio [OR] 0.47 [95% CI 0.30-0.72], p=0.0007), so the imaging modalities were not pooled. Increasing ischaemic core volume was associated with reduced likelihood of functional independence (CTP OR 0.77 [0.69-0.86] per 10 mL, p(interaction)=0.29; diffusion MRI OR 0.87 [0.81-0.94] per 10 mL, p(interaction)=0.94). Mismatch volume, examined only in the CTP group because of the small numbers of patients who had perfusion MRI, was not associated with either functional independence or functional improvement. In patients with CTP with more than 50% endovascular reperfusion (n=186), age, ischaemic core volume, and imaging-to-reperfusion time were independently associated with functional improvement. Risk of bias between studies was generally low.Interpretation Estimated ischaemic core volume was independently associated with functional independence and functional improvement but did not modify the treatment benefit of endovascular thrombectomy over standard medical therapy for improved functional outcome. Combining ischaemic core volume with age and expected imagingto-reperfusion time will improve assessment of prognosis and might inform endovascular thrombectomy treatment decisions. Abstract: BACKGROUND: General anaesthesia (GA) during endovascular thrombectomy has been associated with worse patient outcomes in observational studies compared with patients treated without GA. We assessed functional outcome in ischaemic stroke patients with large vessel anterior circulation occlusion undergoing endovascular thrombectomy under GA, versus thrombectomy not under GA (with or without sedation) versus standard care (ie, no thrombectomy), stratified by the use of GA versus standard care.METHODS: For this meta-analysis, patient-level data were pooled from all patients included in randomised trials in PuMed published between Jan 1, 2010, and May 31, 2017, that compared endovascular thrombectomy predominantly done with stent retrievers with standard care in anterior circulation ischaemic stroke patients (HERMES Collaboration). The primary outcome was functional outcome assessed by ordinal analysis of the modified Rankin scale (mRS) at 90 days in the GA and non-GA subgroups of patients treated with endovascular therapy versus those patients treated with standard care, adjusted for baseline prognostic variables. To account for between-trial variance we used mixed-effects modelling with a random effect for trials incorporated in all models. Bias was assessed using the Cochrane method. The meta-analysis was prospectively designed, but not registered.FINDINGS: Seven trials were identified by our search; of 1764 patients included in these trials, 871 were allocated to endovascular thrombectomy and 893 were assigned standard care. After exclusion of 74 patients (72 did not undergo the procedure and two had missing data on anaesthetic strategy), 236 (30%) of 797 patients who had endovascular procedures were treated under GA. At baseline, patients receiving GA were younger and had a shorter delay between stroke onset and randomisation but they had similar pre-treatment clinical severity compared with patients who did not have GA. Endovascular thrombectomy improved functional outcome at 3 months both in patients who had GA (adjusted common odds ratio (cOR) 1·52, 95% CI 1·09-2·11, p=0·014) and in those who did not have GA (adjusted cOR 2·33, 95% CI 1·75-3·10, pINTERPRETATION: Worse outcomes after endovascular thrombectomy were associated with GA, after adjustment for baseline prognostic variables. These data support avoidance of GA whenever possible. The procedure did, however, remain effective versus standard care in patients treated under GA, indicating that treatment should not be withheld in those who require anaesthesia for medical reasons.FUNDING: Medtronic.

Abstract: In the US, deaths from prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999, prompting authorities to declare an "opioid abuse" crisis. Rising overdose deaths were attributed to trends in the overprescription of opioids, specifically the strength and duration of the initial prescription. We describe educational interventions designed to control healthcare professionals' (HCPs) opioid prescribing in the wake of this crisis. A review of relevant programs for practicing providers, medical residents, and medical students reveals a focus on educational interventions that we describe, borrowing from sociologist John McKinlay's metaphor for public health interventions, as "downstream." These downstream interventions concentrate on regulating and educating practicing HCPs rather than transforming the training environment for medical students and residents. We draw on theories of behavior change to call for the development of complementary "upstream" educational programs for future practitioners that focus on structural and psychosocial factors and may contribute to more sustainable behavior change outcomes.

Abstract: Background RNA visualization software tools have traditionally presented a static visualization of RNA molecules with limited ability for users to interact with the resulting image once it is complete. Only a few tools allowed for dynamic structures. One such tool is jViz.RNA. Currently, jViz.RNA employs a unique method for the creation of the RNA molecule layout by mapping the RNA nucleotides into vertexes in a graph, which we call the detailed graph, and then utilizes a Newtonian mechanics inspired system of forces to calculate a layout for the RNA molecule. The work presented here focuses on improvements to jViz.RNA that allow the drawing of RNA secondary structures according to common drawing conventions, as well as dramatic run-time performance improvements. This is done first by presenting an alternative method for mapping the RNA molecule into a graph, which we call the compressed graph, and then employing advanced numerical integration methods for the compressed graph representation. Results Comparing the compressed graph and detailed graph implementations, we find that the compressed graph produces results more consistent with RNA drawing conventions. However, we also find that employing the compressed graph method requires a more sophisticated initial layout to produce visualizations that would require minimal user interference. Comparing the two numerical integration methods demonstrates the higher stability of the Backward Euler method, and its resulting ability to handle much larger time steps, a high priority feature for any software which entails user interaction. Conclusion The work in this manuscript presents the preferred use of compressed graphs to detailed ones, as well as the advantages of employing the Backward Euler method over the Forward Euler method. These improvements produce more stable as well as visually aesthetic representations of the RNA secondary structures. The results presented demonstrate that both the compressed graph representation, as well as the Backward Euler integrator, greatly enhance the run-time performance and usability. Abstract: Care for low back pain remains a clinical enigma. Its high prevalence and cost to the system warrants attention for improvement. Although, no major recent clinical breakthroughs for resolving back pain have emerged, reducing unnecessary tests, eliminating useless or harmful practices, preventing care dependence, and enhancing coping skills can be useful goals for improving patient outcomes. Quality Improvement (QI) approaches can serve as bridge between clinical intuition and large scale science. Three chiropractic delivery settings including two teaching clinics and one large multidisciplinary spine care center incorporated QI approaches as part of an initiative to improve low back pain care. All clinics were able to implement sustainable process and outcomes improvements.

Abstract: An exploration of the use of multiple secondary structure elements for structural RNA gene finding is conducted. The secondary structure models are combined through a multilayer voting system which first combines the probability output of support vector machines and then combines the results of those votes to predict whether a sequence is a structural RNA gene or not. It is found that the voting in the first layer of the system has significant impact on the performance of individual secondary structure element models with improvements in classification results of up to 56%. Likewise, gains in classification F-measure over 0.6 were seen when two secondary structure element model predictions were voted together. When all the secondary structure element models were used in voting, an accuracy of over 93% was achieved by the secondary structure RNA gene classification system.

Abstract: Purpose To compare the reproducibility (r) of CT value measurement of pulmonary nodules using volumetry software (LungCare, LC) and manual ROIs (mROI). Materials and methods 54 artificial nodules in a chest phantom were scanned three times with CT. CT values were measured with LC and mROI. The intrascan-r was assessed with three measurements in the first scan, and the interscan-r with measurements in three consecutive scans (one observer). Intrascan-r und interobserver-r (two obs.) were assessed in the first scan and in contrast-enhanced CT of 51 nodules from 15 patients (kernels b50f and b80f). Intrascan-r and interscan-r were described as the mean range and interobserver-r as the mean difference of CT values. The significance of differences was tested using t-test and sign test. Results Reproducibility was significantly higher for volumetry-based measurements in both artificial and patient nodules (range 0.11 vs. 6.16 HU for intrascan-r, 2.22 vs. 7.03 HU for interscan-r, difference 0.11 vs. 18.42 HU for interobserver-r; patients: 1.78 vs. 13.19 HU (b50f-Kernel) and 1.88 vs. 27.4 HU (b80f-Kernel) for intrascan-r, 3.71 vs. 22.43 HU for interobserver-r). Absolute CT values differed significantly between convolution kernels (pat./mROI: 29.3 [b50f] and 151.9 HU [b80f] pat./LC: 5 [b50f] and 147 HU [b80f]). Conclusion The reproducibility of volumetry-based measurements of CT values in pulmonary nodules is significantly higher and should therefore be recommended, e. g. in dynamic chest CT protocols. Reproducibility does not depend on absolute CT values.

Abstract: RNA has important structural, functional, and regulatory parts in the cell as well as a critical role in multiple stages of protein synthesis. An RNA molecule's shape largely determines its function in an organic system. Accordingly, computational RNA structural prediction methods are of significant interest. For ab initio cases where only an RNA sequence is known, structure prediction techniques typically employ free energy minimization of a given RNA molecule via a thermodynamic model. Unfortunately, the minimum free energy structure is rarely the native structure. This is thought to be due to errors in the experimentally determined thermodynamic model parameters. RnaPredict is an evolutionary algorithm designed for the prediction of RNA secondary structure; it currently utilizes the stacking-energy thermodynamic models INN and INN-HB. The effect of an enhanced model, efn2, on RnaPredict is investigated. The efn2 model significantly improved the sensitivity and specificity of the majority of structures evaluated.

Abstract: The RNA secondary structure design (SSD) problem is a recently emerging research topic motivated by applications such as customized drug design and the self-assembly of RNA nano-objects. This paper presents a novel local search algorithm, rnaDesign for SSD solving. An evaluation of the algorithm performance in terms of sequence affinity and structure specificity is made through comparison with another algorithm, RNAinverse. Experiments were performed on RNA secondary structures including three biologically existing data sets and one random structure set. Empirical results show that rnaDesign outperforms RNAinverse in terms of structure designability; sequences designed by rnaDesign also exhibit better thermodynamic stability with relatively lower folding energy. Furthermore, we demonstrate through parameter tuning experiments that using a combination of heuristic search strategies leads to better design performance; there also exists a strong correlation between the heuristic values in use and solution quality.

Abstract: Empirical algorithm study involves tuning various parameter settings in order to achieve an optimal performance. It is also experimentally known that algorithm performance varies across problem instances. In stochastic local search (metaheuristics) paradigm, search efficiency is correlated to the empirical hardness of the underlying combinatorial optimization problem itself. Therefore, investigating these correlations are of crucial importance towards the design of robust algorithmic solutions. To achieve this goal, an accurate prediction of algorithm performance is a prerequisite, since it allows an automatic tuning of parameter settings on a perproblem base. In this work, we investigate using parametric & non-parametric regression models for algorithm performance prediction for the RNA Secondary Structure Design problem (SSD). Empirical results show our non-parametric methods achieve a higher prediction accuracy on biologically existing data, where biological data exhibits a higher degree of local similarity among individual instances. We also found that using a non-parametric regression tree model (CART) provides insight into studying the empirical hardness of solving the SSD problem.

This paper presents SARNA-Predict-pk, an algorithm for pseudoknotted RNA secondary structure prediction based on Simulated Annealing (SA). The research presented here extends previous work of SARNA-Predict and incorporates a new thermodynamic model into the algorithm, effectively enabling it to predict pseudo-knotted RNA structures. An evaluation of the performance of SARNA-Predict-pk in terms of prediction accuracy is made via comparison with several state-of-the-art prediction algorithms. We measured the sensitivity and specificity using five prediction algorithms. Three of these are dynamic programming algorithms: Pseudoknot (pknotsRE), NUPACK, and pknotsRG-mfe. The other two are heuristic algorithms: SARNA-Predict-pk and HotKnots algorithms. An evaluation for the performance of SARNA-Predict-pk in terms of prediction accuracy was verified with native structures. Experiments on ten individual known structures from six RNA classes (tRNA, viral RNA, anti-genomic HDV, telomerase RNA, tmRNA, and RNaseP) were performed. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that SARNA-Predict-pk can out-perform other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy.

Abstract: Ribonucleic acid, a single stranded linear molecule, is essential to all biological systems. Different regions of the same RNA strand will fold together via base pair interactions to make intricate secondary and tertiary structures that guide crucial homeostatic processes in living organisms. Since the structure of RNA molecules is key to their function, algorithms for the prediction of RNA structure are of great value. This paper discusses significant improvements made to SARNA-Predict, an RNA secondary structure prediction algorithm based on Simulated Annealing (SA). One major improvement is the incorporation of a sophisticated thermodynamic model (efn2). This model is used by mfold to rank sub-optimal structures, but cannot be used directly by mfold during the structure prediction. Experiments on eight individual known structures from four RNA classes (5S rRNA, Group I intron 23S rRNA, Group I intron 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA) were performed. The data demonstrate the robustness and the effectiveness of our improved prediction algorithm. The new algorithm shows results which surpass the dynamic programming algorithm mfold in terms of prediction accuracy on all tested structures.

Abstract: Objective Every promotion committee is challenged by the need to make value judgments on the quantity and quality of peer work. Decisions based upon subjective assessments may not do justice to the applicant's or the institution's needs. The purpose of this article is to (1) describe the process a college promotion committee used to increase the objectivity brought to this activity, (2) present the tools developed that facilitated the collection and evaluation of faculty work, and (3) describe their usage in a promotion cycle. Methods The Professor Promotion Committee met weekly for 6 months engaging in lengthy and comprehensive discourse to capture the breadth of scholastic and service activities normally engaged in by faculty. Results The committee's work culminated in the development of 4 electronic applications soliciting specific evidence aligned with faculty work and 1 scoring rubric tied directly to the e-applications. More than 55 activities were identified, divided into 4 levels of accomplishment using quantitative and qualitative criteria and weighted according to their centrality to faculty work and relative importance to the institution. Each activity was assigned to one of the following categories: teaching/academic support, scholarship/research, service, and professional development. A consensus score based upon the evidence was used to generate promotion discussions. Conclusions The committee believes the online application aids applicants in recognizing the breadth and depth of promotable work. It provides them the opportunity to structure their work in ways that enhance their chances for promotion. The evidence-based rubric helps to reduce subjectivity in the evaluation process.

Abstract: Two extensive analyzes on RnaPredict, an evolutionary algorithm for RNA folding, are presented here. The first study evaluates the performance of Individual Neares Neighbor (INN) and Individual Nearest Neighbor-Hydrogen Bond (INN-HB), two stacking-energy thermodynamic models; the criteria for comparison is the correlation between the prediction accuracy and the free energy of predicted structures for 9 RNA sequences. Despite some variance, a trend between lower free energies and increases in true positive base pairs is apparent. In general, this correlation decreases as the sequence length increases. The second study compares the performance of RnaPredict against the mfold dynamic programming algorithm (DPA) on the same sequences in terms of specificity and sensitivity. The results indicate that RnaPredict has comparable performance to mfold on sub-optimal structures, and outperforms mfold's minimum free energy structures.

In this paper we describe some of the general functions and features that are required for exploring and comparing graphs in bioinformatics. We include a description of a selection of existing tools, to give an overview of the current abilities of graph drawing software and to analyze their advantages and drawbacks in the bioinformatics domain.

Abstract: Background : CPAP remains the treatment of choice for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS), but compliance with CPAP is poor. Of many interventions tried to improve CPAP compliance, only education and humidification have been shown to be of benefit. Our purpose was to develop and pilot test a video to enhance patient understanding of obstructive sleep apnea and of the purpose, logistics, and benefits of CPAP use in patients newly diagnosed with OSAHS. A patient's CPAP compliance in the first few weeks after starting its use is predictive of long-term compliance with CPAP treatment. It is imperative that patients grasp at the outset both the severity of OSAHS and the effectiveness of CPAP therapy. Methods : An educational video script was written based on recommendations for patient educational video materials and covering identified misconceptions about OSAHS and perceived barriers to CPAP use. The videotape is 15min in length and features two middle-aged males, one African-American and one Euro-American, discussing OSAHS and CPAP in a factory break room. Results : In a randomized two-group design with a control group, patients with newly diagnosed OSAHS, and who viewed the CPAP educational video on their first clinic, were significantly more likely to use their machine and to return for a 1-month clinic visit than were those in the control group. Conclusion :Viewing of a patient education video at the initial visit was found to significantly improve the rate of return for the follow-up visit.

Abstract: As a predominant technique to estimate the cause and effect of Quality of Service (QoS) criteria in computer networks, simulations provide insight into how to most efficiently configure protocols to maximize the usage and to estimate the criteria for acceptable performance of network applications. This paper investigates the simulation of Genetic Algorithm-based network routing using Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) protocols. The simulator is implemented using LEDA (Library of Efficient Data types and Algorithms) [1] and the applicability of the library is examined in the context of Genetic Algorithms.

Abstract: Pseudoknots are RNA tertiary structures which perform essential biological functions. This paper discusses SARNA-Predict-pk, a RNA pseudoknotted secondary structure prediction algorithm based on Simulated Annealing (SA). The research presented here extends previous work of SARNA-Predict and further examines the effect of the new algorithm to include prediction of RNA secondary structure with pseudoknots. An evaluation of the performance of SARNA-Predict-pk in terms of prediction accuracy is made via comparison with several state-of-the-art prediction algorithms using 20 individual known structures from seven RNA classes. We measured the sensitivity and specificity of nine prediction algorithms. Three of these are dynamic programming algorithms: Pseudoknot (pknotsRE), NUPACK, and pknotsRG-mfe. One is using the statistical clustering approach: Sfold and the other five are heuristic algorithms: SARNA-Predict-pk, ILM, STAR, IPknot and HotKnots algorithms. The results presented in this paper demonstrate that SARNA-Predict-pk can out-perform other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of prediction accuracy. This supports the use of the proposed method on pseudoknotted RNA secondary structure prediction of other known structures.

Abstract: The Building 200/205 Pneumatic Transfer Tube DD Survey the transfer tube to identify any external contamination; Remove the transfer tube and package for disposal; Survey the soil and sand surrounding the transfer tube for any contamination; and Backfill the trench in which the tube sat and restore the area to its original condition. These goals had been set in order to eliminate the radiological and hazardous safety concerns inherent in the buried transfer tube and to allow, upon completion of the project, the removal of this project from the ANL-E action item list. The physical condition of the transfer tube and possible nuclear fuel samples lost in the tube were the primary areas of concern, while the exact location of the transfer tube was of secondary concern. ANL-E health physics technicians collected characterization data from the ends of the Building 200/205 pneumatic transfer tube in January 1998. The characterization surveys identified contamination to a level of 67,000 dpm (1,117 Bq) ({beta}/{gamma}) and 20,000 dpm (333 Bq) {alpha} smearable at the opening.

Abstract: The Building 594 DD Decontamination of the Waste Ion Exchange Facility to unrestricted use levels; Demolition of Building 594; and Documentation of all project activities affecting quality (i.e., waste packaging, instrument calibration, audit results, and personnel exposure) These goals had been set in order to eliminate the radiological and hazardous safety concerns inherent in the Waste Ion Exchange Facility and to allow, upon completion of the project, unescorted and unmonitored access to the area. The ion exchange system and the resin contained in the system were the primary areas of concern, while the condition of the building which housed the system was of secondary concern. ANL-E health physics technicians characterized the Building 594 Waste Ion Exchange Facility in September 1996. The characterization identified a total of three radionuclides present in the Waste Ion Exchange Facility with a total activity of less than 5 {micro}Ci (175 kBq). The radionuclides of concern were Co{sup 60}, Cs{sup 137}, and Am{sup 241}. The highest dose rates observed during the project were associated with the resin in the exchange vessels. DOE Order 5480.2A establishes the maximum whole body exposure for occupational workers at 5 rem (50 mSv)/yr; the administrative limit at ANL-E is 1 rem/yr (10 mSv/yr).

Abstract: The epidemiological profile of the United States has changed drastically over the last 70 years. The so-called “demographic transition” has been accomplished, with the shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates. The population pyramid for this country has changed from the wide-based, sharp-peaked form characteristic of a rural, nonindustrialized country to the more nearly straight-sided, broad-topped form associated with industrialized, urbanized countries. This change in the shape of the population pyramid reflects a radical change in the demography and associated health concerns of the nation. The major health concerns of the United States are now chronic degenerative conditions, all of which have major behavioral components in their etiology, treatment, and prevention. Advances in medical behavioral research focused on these conditions are being applied to the current changes in the training of health care professionals in the United States. This chapter addresses the application of these advances in medical behavioral research both to the curricular reforms of health education and to the specific training of medical students for patient care.

Abstract: The use of high-energy low-fiber broiler rations containing large amounts of animal proteins has come at a time when animal products for livestock feeding are extremely scarce and costly. Almost simultaneously animal protein factor (B12) preparations have become available as supplements for poultry rations. Crystalline vitamin B12 was shown by Ott, et al. (1948) to give response similar to the animal protein factor. Lindstrom, et al. (1949) found that a vitamin B12 concentrate gave approximately the same response for chick growth as condensed fish solubles. It had previously been shown by Petersen and Lampman (1949) that the use of herring fish meal at a level of 10 percent in a high-energy broiler ration permitted the omission of liver meal, choline and niacin. Abstract: BLOOD spots in eggs represent a serious loss to the poultry industry and the loss may become greater with more general use of electronic blood spot detection in the future. Numerous workers have investigated the effects of nutrients on the incidence of blood spots. Nalbandov and Card (1944) observed that blood spots were due to hemorrhaging within the follicular membrane and reported that vitamins A, C, D, E, K, and P had no effect on the incidence of blood spots, but that there was a definite seasonal increase from December through the following July. However, these same workers (1947) reported the feeding of cerograss reduced the incidence of blood spots materially in one of 2 years’ studied. Bearse et al.
