Structural health monitoring represents an important task that involves various measurements and methods. Due to its importance, it uses the best available equipment and the most advanced algorithms to give precise and reliable information about an object's health. For tall objects such as chimneys, towers, and masts the main criterion of stability is verticality deviation (inclination). However, sometimes it is necessary to get a rapid assessment of an object’s stability and in that case, accuracy and reliability are sacrificed to save time. In this paper, an approach for rapid assessment of verticality of structural objects with a circular base is presented. Geodetic methods were used to measure points in two levels on the perimeter of the object. Three algebraic methods for circle fitting were used to determine the center coordinates and radius of the object in the two observed cross-sections. The final step was to determine the spatial vector which represents the object’s axis and compare it to the theoretical vertical. The proposed approach is fast, simple, and inexpensive in terms of equipment, human resources, and software necessary for data processing but at the same time, it is less accurate and reliable compared to the state of the art approaches for object verticality assessment.

This research presents the first findings on thrombopoiesis for Wistar rats. Haemopoietic cells from the femur and the sternum were analysed by light microscopy in combination with infrared and near-ultraviolet light for fine cytoplasmic structure analysis. Five main types of thrombocyte precursor cells were identified in the bone marrow samples: megakaryoblast, promegakaryocyte and megakaryocyte (basophilic, acidophilic and thrombocytogenic). More intensive thrombopoiesis and morphologically differentiated cells were found in sternum samples.

BackgroundWe systematically reviewed the evidence on the efficacy and safety of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) targeted pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) versus any comparator for treatment of non-neuropathic pain.MethodsWe searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, clinicaltrials.gov and WHO clinical trial register until January 8, 2019. All study designs were eligible. Two authors independently conducted literature screening. Primary outcomes were pain intensity and serious adverse events (SAEs). Secondary outcomes were any other pain-related outcome and any other safety outcome that was reported. We assessed the risk of bias using the Cochrane tool and Risk of Bias In Non-randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I). We conducted narrative evidence synthesis and assessed the conclusiveness of included studies regarding efficacy and safety.ResultsWe included 17 studies with 599 participants, which analyzed various pain syndromes. Two studies were randomized controlled trials; both included participants with low back pain (LBP). Non-randomized studies included patients with the following indications: LBP, postsurgical pain, pain associated with herpes zoster, cervicogenic headache, complex regional pain syndrome type 1, intractable vertebral metastatic pain, chronic scrotal and inguinal pain, occipital radiating pain in rheumatoid arthritis and chronic migraine. In these studies, the PRF was usually initiated after other treatments have failed. Eleven studies had positive conclusive statements (11/17) about efficacy; the remaining had positive inconclusive statements. Only three studies provided conclusiveness of evidence statements regarding safety – two indicated that the evidence was positive conclusive, and one positive inconclusive. The risk of bias was predominantly unclear in randomized and serious in non-randomized studies.ConclusionPoor quality and few participants characterize evidence about benefits and harms of DRG PRF in patients with non-neuropathic pain. Results from available studies should only be considered preliminary. Not all studies have reported data regarding the safety of the intervention, but those that did, indicate that the intervention is relatively safe. As the procedure is non-destructive and early results are promising, further comparative studies about PRF in non-neuropathic pain syndromes would be welcomed.

Background This study was conducted in order to explore the effects of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) on the changes of salivary proteome. This prospective observational pilot study recruited 12 healthy teenage boys with malocclusion treated with a fixed orthodontic appliance and 6 appropriate control participants. Saliva samples were collected a day before and at 0, 2, 7, and 30 days after initialization of treatment, corresponding to the initial, lag, and post-lag phases of OTM. Pooled samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, ELISA, and Western blotting. To date, there is no published data on the presence of BMP molecules or their antagonists in the saliva or in the gingival cervical fluid related to orthodontic conditions. Results A total of 198 identified saliva proteins were classified based on their functional characteristics. Proteins involved in bone remodeling were observed exclusively 30 days post appliance placement, including bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), a BMP antagonist BMP-binding endothelial regulator, insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 3, cytoskeleton-associated protein 4, and fibroblast growth factor 5. Based on the analysis of protein interactions, BMP4 was found to have a central position in this OTM-related protein network. Conclusions The placement of a fixed orthodontic appliance induced occurrence of proteins involved in bone remodeling in the saliva at a time corresponding to the post-lag period of OTM. Limitations of this study include a relatively small sample size, limited time of monitoring patients, and the lack of interindividual variability assessment.

Introduction: Although many predictive tools have already been developed, efforts are still proceeding to identify a reliable biomarker to predict the prognosis of the patients with acute heart disorders. Objectives: The aim was to evaluate the role of renal injury biomarkers (serum cystatin C, serum and urine interleukin-18, IL-18) and heart failure biomarkers (plasma B-type natriuretic peptide, BNP) in the prediction of the postdischarge requirement of renal replacement therapy (RRT) and/or 6-month mortality in patients with acute heart disorders. Patients and Methods: In patients diagnosed with acute heart disorders (acute heart failure [AHF] and/or acute coronary syndrome [ACS]) and admitted to the intensive care units, baseline clinical parameters, renal and cardiac biomarkers were determined. Patients were followed up for 6 months. The composite outcome was the postdischarge requirement of RRT and/or 6-month mortality. Results: Of 120 patients, 5.8% continued RRT after discharge. The 6-month mortality was 20%. Cox logistic regression analysis showed that urine IL-18 (P=0.021), plasma BNP (P=0.046), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score (P=0.002), and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (P=0.045) were independent predictors of the postdischarge requirement of RRT and/or 6-month mortality. For predicting RRT and/or 6-month mortality, using urine IL-18 cutoff value of 29.1 pg/mL showed 66.7% sensitivity and 67.7% specificity (area under the curve, AUC 0.70, P=0.003), while using plasma BNP cutoff value of 881.6 pg/mL showed 66.7% sensitivity and 70.8% specificity (AUC 0.76, PConclusion: Urine IL-18 and plasma BNP are independently predictive for the postdischarge requirement of RRT and/or 6-month mortality in patients with acute heart disorders.

Background. The Neretva nase, Chondrostoma knerii Heckel, 1843, is an endemic cyprinid species distributed in the Neretva River basin in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, designated in the EU Habitats Directive as a species requiring conservation within member states. According to the IUCN, the species is catalogued as vulnerable (VU). Available scientific data indicate that significant aspects of its biological and ecological characteristics, as well as conservation requirements, are scarce and largely composed of outdated records. This paper provides a summary of the main life history traits, particularly those related to the conservation challenges and a detailed list of the current state of knowledge. Materials and methods. This review was based on published literature in the form of research articles, monographs, books and technical reports, as well as unpublished data Results. All available data were organized, critically analysed and presented in a comprehensive form. Issues related to species conservation were highlighted with respect to the impact of development activities. The long-term monitoring data of reproduction activity in the Hutovo Blato wetland were presented, showing the lowering of spring inflow capacity as the major factors for spawning success. Conclusion. This review will, hopefully, serve as foundation and indicative example for future research aimed at better understanding the origin and status of this fish species in order to assure effective management and conservation programs.

Low-back pain is one of the most common causes of physical disability, most often originating from intervertebral disc degeneration. Lack of pinpointing the exact source of pain is the limiting factor in more efficient prevention and treatment. New findings, especially in the fields of genetics and mass spectometry based protein analysis, shed a new light to the understanding of etiopathogenesis of disc degenerative disease. New imaging methods like chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST)MRI or apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC)MRI can detect early degenerative changes. Advances have been made regarding elucidating the role of physical load, as well as the type of exercise that can have an impact on the development and treatment of patients with degenerative disc disease. Finally, a significant progress has been made in the surgical treatment ecouraging of these patients, with an emphasis on minimally invasive techniques. Other surgical modalities have also shown improvement, like total disc replacement and mesenchymal stem cells treatments. These, and other novelties in the diagnosis and treatment of degenerative disc disease of lumbar spine are discussed in this article.

Background Mammary carcinogenesis is partly regulated by the transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signaling pathway. Its function in cancer progression and metastasis is highly dependent on disease stage, and it is likely modulated by the ratio of membrane-bound vs. soluble TGFβrIII (sTGFβrIII). In this prospective observational study, we assessed tissue expression and plasma levels of sTGFβrIII in healthy women, women with benign breast lesions and in early-stage breast cancer patients. Methods In a preliminary study, plasma sTGFβrIII levels were determined in 13 healthy women (age 19–40 years) at different phases of the ovarian cycle, and in 15 patients (age 35–75 years) at different times of the day. The main study assessed plasma concentrations of sTGFβrIII in: (i) 158 healthy women in whom breast lesions were excluded; (ii) 65 women with benign breast lesions; (iii) 147 women with newly diagnosed breast cancer classified as American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stages 0 to IIB. Completers provided blood samples before surgery and at 10–30 and 160–180 days after surgery. Plasma sTGFβrIII concentrations were determined using an indirect ELISA kit. Part of the removed tissues underwent immunohistochemical (IHC) staining and analysis of tissue TGFβrIII expression. Results There appeared no relevant variations in plasma sTGFßrIII levels at different times of the day or different ovarian cycle phases. Before surgery, breast cancer patients had somewhat higher sTGFβrIII than healthy women, or those with benign breast lesions (by 14.5 and 26 ng/mL, respectively), with a tendency of larger differences at higher age. This correlated with lower expression of TGFβrIII in breast cancer vs. healthy tissue samples. At 160–180 days after surgery, plasma sTGFβrIII levels in breast cancer patients declined by 23–26 ng/mL. Conclusions Plasma sTGFβrIII levels do not seem to relevantly vary during the day or the ovarian cycle. The coinciding higher plasma levels in newly diagnosed cancer patients than in healthy subjects and lower TGFβrIII expression in the malignant than in healthy breast tissue suggest ectodomain shedding as a source of circulating sTGFβrIII. Decline in plasma levels after tumor removal supports such a view.

ObjectivePulsed radiofrequency (PRF) is a nonablative pain treatment that uses radiofrequency current in short high-voltage bursts, resulting in interruption of nociceptive afferent pathways. We conducted a systematic review with the aim to create a synthesis of evidence about the efficacy and safety of PRF applied to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) for the treatment of neuropathic pain.MethodsWe searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, and PsycINFO through January 8, 2019, as well as ClinicalTrials.gov and the clinical trial register of the World Health Organization. All study designs were eligible. We assessed risk of bias using the Cochrane tool for randomized controlled trials and the Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I). We assessed level of evidence using the Oxford tool and quality of evidence with GRADE.ResultsWe included 28 studies with participants suffering from lumbosacral, cervical, or thoracic radicular pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, neuropathicbone pain in cancer patients, or carpal tunnel syndrome. Only five studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs), while others were of nonrandomized designs, predominantly before and after comparisons. A total of 991 participants were included, with a median number (range) of 31 (1–101) participants. Only 204 participants were included in the RCTs, with a median number (range) of 38 (23–62) participants. The overall quality of evidence was low, as the majority of the included studies were rated as evidence level 4 or 5. The quality of evidence was very low.ConclusionsEvidence about the efficacy and safety of PRF of the DRG for the treatment of neuropathic pain is based mainly on results from very small studies with low evidence quality. Current research results about the benefits of PRF of the DRG for the treatment of neuropathic pain should be considered preliminary and confirmed in high-quality RCTs with sufficient numbers of participants.

Background Diabetic nephropathy is a progressive condition which develops for many years. We analyzed expression of Snail and serum response factor (SRF), epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) regulatory transcription factors with a key role in renal fibrosis, in different renal areas of diabetic rats during ageing. Methods Male Sprague–Dawley rats were treated with 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (model of type 1 diabetes mellitus; DM group) or citrate buffer (control). DM group received insulin weekly to prevent ketoacidosis. After 2 weeks, 2, 6 and 12 months kidney samples were collected and analysed in different renal areas. Results Snail expression was located within cortex in proximal convoluted tubules, in control and DM groups, in the cytoplasm. Percentage of Snail-positive cells in control groups was high and decreased with time, whereas in DM groups the highest percentage was after 2 weeks. In all time points, smaller percentage of Snail expression was seen in DM groups compared to controls. SRF expression was mostly located in the proximal convoluted tubules, always in the cytoplasm. In control groups SRF was expressed in all time periods in proximal convoluted tubules, with decrement after 12 months. Percentage of SRF-positive cells was higher in control groups compared to DM in all time points, with the exception of 12 months. To a smaller degree, SRF expression was seen in the glomeruli and distal convoluted tubules, with more SRF positive cells in DM compared to their control groups. Conclusions While Snail expression remained lower in diabetic tissues, compared to controls, expression of SRF increased in diabetic tissues in the second part of the year. These changes may need long time to develop, and, in line with earlier reports, it is possible that insulin treatment of DM rats once a week reduces possibility of EMT and development of renal fibrosis even in the long term.

Hydropower dam displacement is influenced by various factors (dam ageing, reservoir water level, air, water, and concrete temperature), which cause complex nonlinear behaviour that is difficult to predict. Object deformation monitoring is a task of geodetic and civil engineers who use different instruments and methods for measurements. Only geodetic methods have been used for the object movement analysis in this research. Although the whole object is affected by the influencing factors, different parts of the object react differently. Hence, one model cannot describe behaviour of every part of the object precisely. In this research, a localised approach is presented&mdash, two individual models are developed for every point strategically placed on the object: one model for the analysis and prediction in the direction of the X axis and the other for the Y axis. Additionally, the prediction of horizontal dam movement is not performed directly from measured values of influencing factors, but from predicted values obtained by machine learning and statistical methods. The results of this research show that it is possible to perform accurate short-term time series dam movement prediction by using machine learning and statistical methods and that the only limiting factor for improving prediction length is accurate weather forecast.

This paper is a review of the relevant scientific literature on the present status, distribution, habitat, ecological traits, population structure and threats of Neretva roach Rutilus basak (Heckel, 1843). The species inhabits a restricted area of the Adriatic Sea watershed in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The major threats are habitat loss caused by significant hydrological changes in the water regime in the area of distribution and the introduction of non-indigenous species. Still, R. basak is quite widespread and often abundant. Information brought together in this study will improve our knowledge about this species.

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) has very high rate of repeat hospitalizations due to HF decompensation (HHFD), sometimes very shortly after discharge for acute HF. Aim: The aim of this paper is to investigate rate of HHFD and to identify their possible predictors. Patients and Methods: Total amount of 222 patients hospitalized at Clinic for heart and vessel disease and rheumatism in acute HF were followed for next 18 months for occurrence of HHFD. During hospitalization were collected demographic data, risk factors, routine laboratory tests and admission BNP (brain natriuretic peptide), discharge BNP, percentage change of BNP during hospitalization, high sensitive troponin I, CA125 (cancer antigen125) and cystatin C. Results: In next 18 months 129 patients (58.11%) reached end-point HHFD- mean time of its occurrence was 2.2 (95% CI=1.67-2.7) months. Patients with HHFD had more often arterial hypertension (HTA) (p=0.006), had higher BMI (p=0.035) and had higher values of bilirubin, admission BNP (p=0.031), discharge BNP (p 25 and discharge BNP are independent predictors of HHFD. This could help us to identify high-risk patients for readmission who should be monitored more frequently and treated with sophisticated drug and device therapy.

We also analyzed conclusion statements as well as conflict of interest and financing of the included studies.Methods: All study designs were eligible for inclusion. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, and clinical trial registries until September 7, 2018. We assessed risk of bias by using Cochrane tool for randomized controlled trials (RCTs).Results: Among the 29 included studies, only one was RCT, majority being case series and case reports. The evidence is based on studies with small number of participants (median: 6, range 1–152) with various painful conditions. Neuromodulation with EFS of DRG was mostly performed in participants who have failed other treatment modalities. Most of the authors of the included studies reported positive, but inconclusive, evidence regarding efficacy of neuromodulation with EFS of DRG. Meta-analysis was not possible since only one RCT was included.Conclusion: Available evidence suggest that neuromodulation with EFS of DRG may help highly selected participants with various pain syndromes, who have failed to achieve adequate pain relief with other pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions. However, these findings should be confirmed in high-quality RCTs with sufficient numbers of participants. Introduction: A progress in the management of cardiovascular disease leads to a decrease in mortality, but heart failure (HF) seems to be an exception. Today, the rate of rehospitalization and mortality after acute heart failure is still very high. Lower ejection fraction (EF) means worse prognosis, but recent studies are reporting that HF patients with preserved EF have no better survival compared to patients with reduced EF1. Goal: to investigate a possible difference in the outcome of HF patients with reduced (HFREF) and preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF). Patients and Methods: In 222 patients hospitalized in acute HF (138 with reduced EF and 74 with preserved EF) were determined routine laboratory test, including BNP. The LVEF cutoff for diagnosing of HFPEF was above 45 %. Patients were followed for the next 18 months for the occurrence of 1. readmission due to repeat decompensation and 2. mortality. Introduction: Data regarding prognostic factors of post-discharge mortality and adverse renal function outcome in acute kidney injury (AKI) hospital survivors are scarce and controversial. Objectives: We aimed to identify predictors of post-discharge mortality and adverse renal function outcome in AKI hospital survivors. Patients and Methods: The study group consisted of 84 AKI hospital survivors admitted to the tertiary medical center during 2-year period. Baseline clinical parameters, with renal outcome 3 months after discharge and 6-month mortality were evaluated. According survival and renal function outcome, patients were divided into two groups. Results: Patients who did not recover renal function were statistically significantly older (P < 0.007) with higher Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score (P < 0.000) and more likely to have anuria and oliguria (P = 0.008) compared to those with recovery. Deceased AKI patients were statistically significantly older (P < 0.000), with higher CCI score (P < 0.000), greater prevalence of sepsis (P =0.004), higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (P < 0.017) and ferritin (P < 0.051) and lower concentrations of albumin (P

Aim: To assess the utility of gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in predicting troponin elevation in patients with acute coronary syndrome. Patients: The total of 119 patients were divided into troponin-positive (n = 61) and troponin-negative (n = 58) patients. Results: CRP cut-off value ≥13.4 mg/l had the sensitivity of 68.1% and specificity of 62.5%, while the GGT cut-off value ≥61.5 IU/l had the sensitivity of 66.0% and specificity of 62.0% and combined use of both CRP and GGT had 71.4% sensitivity and 69.6% specificity in predicting troponin increase in acute coronary syndrome patients. Conclusion: GGT might be used as an adjuvant marker for risk assessment patients who present with chest pain and are suspected to have acute coronary syndrome.

Background/Aims: Residual renal function (RRF) has been shown to influence survival of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. This study examined the relations between RRF and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) before switching on dialysis treatment and observed during 18 months on PD treatment. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was performed in 50 non-anuric (defined as >200 mL urine output in a 24-hour period) PD patients. Echocardiography, RRF and other known risk factors for the increase of LV mass index (LVMi) were determined at study baseline and the end of follow-up. Results: There was 78% patients with LVH in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) baseline and 60% at the end of follow-up. RRF at the start of the study showed no significant difference between patients with normal and increased LVMi, as well as in daily collection of urine. After 18 months, patients with decreased LVMi had better RRF, lower CRP and better Kt/V compared to patients with increased LVMi (p < 0.001). Patients with better preserved RRF not only had significantly higher total Kt/V, but were less anemic and hypoproteinemic and lesser presence of LVH. Conclusions: PD in non-anuric ESRD patients the first 18 months has a positive effect on the preservation of RRF and partial regression of left ventricular remodeling.

Cardiac valve calcification (CVC) and left ventricular (LV) alterations are frequent complication in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We determined the prevalence of CVC and LV hypertrophy (LVH) in ESRD patients before renal replacement therapy and 12 months after peritoneal dialysis (PD).A prospective longitudinal of 50 incident PD patients was studied. Demographic and clinical data were recorded and blood assayed at baseline and after 1-year of follow-up. CVC and LVH were evaluated by M-mode two-dimensional echocardiography.CVC of the mitral and aortic valves and of both valves were noted in 30, 18 and 10% of patients, respectively. After 12 months of PD regimen, 20% patients had aortic, 24% mitral and 8% had calcification of both valves. After one year of PD, LVH was 62 and 36% in patients with and without CVC, respectively (p 0.05). Endothelin-1 is an independent predictor of CVC at the baseline, while nitric oxide is inversely an independent predictor at the end of follow-up.CVC is associated with LVH in PD patients. These findings identified a potential role for monitored markers to be incorporated into therapeutic strategies aimed at detection and treatment of cardiovascular complications and prevention strategies.

Svrha: Godinu dana nakon ugradnje želio se analizirati gubitak alveolarne kosti u maksili i mandibuli oko implantata BREDENT Sky Blue različitih dimenzija. Materijali i metode: U maksilu je bilo umetnuto 36 implantata promjera 3,5 x 10 mm, a u mandibulu 12. Uz to, 52 implantata promjera 4,0 x 8 mm ugrađena su u maksilu i 61 u mandibulu (dvostupanjska implantacijska operacija). Rezultati: Nije bilo statističke razlike u gubitku kosti između maksile desno i lijevo te mandibule desno i lijevo na mjestima implantacije mezijalno i distalno. Rezultati su dobiveni analizom varijance (ANOVA). Zaključak: Statistički značajna razlika u gubitku kosti zabilježena je između maksile sprijeda i straga te mandibule sprijeda i straga na mjestima implantacije distalno i mezijalno. Rezultati su dobiveni analizom varijance (ANOVA)., Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the amount of maxillary and mandibular crestal bone loss around Bredent Sky Blue type of implants of different dimensions one year after implantation. Materials and Methods: 36 implants of diameter 3.5 x 10 mm were inserted in the maxilla and 12 in the mandible. 52 implants of diameter 4.0 x 8 mm were inserted in the maxilla, and 61 in the mandible (two-stage implant surgery). Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the right and left side of the maxilla and between the right and left side of the mandible at the implant sites regarding distal and mesial bone losses as shown by analysis of variance (ANOVA). Conclusion: Statistically significant differences were found between anterior maxilla, posterior maxilla and anterior mandible and posterior mandible at implant sites regarding distal and mesial bone losses as shown by analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Aims: Cardiovascular alterations contribute to a high mortality rate in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The aims of the present study are to evaluate left ventricular (LV) function and common carotid artery (CCA) parameters and to determine risk factors associated with these changes in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Methods: This longitudinal prospective study was conducted in 50 ESRD patients in whom PD had been initiated and who were observed for 18 months after the commencement of dialysis treatment, with echocardiography and CCA ultrasound parameter evaluation. Results: LV hypertrophy was observed in 78% of patients at baseline and in 60% after 18 months of PD treatment. LV systolic and diastolic function was found to be significantly better after 18 months of PD treatment. Examining predictors of LV systolic function, it was found that total cholesterol was an independent positive predictor and endothelin-1 (ET-1) an independent negative predictor of LV systolic function after 18 months of treatment with PD (p < 0.001). Independent negative predictors of diastolic LV function were hemoglobin and type 2 diabetes mellitus, and daily collection of urine was an independent positive predictor (p < 0.001). Female gender was an independent negative predictor of CCA intima-media thickness, whereas body mass index, ET-1 and C-reactive protein were independent positive predictors (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The results suggest several novel modifiable mechanisms related to the short-term effects of dialysis that are potentially implicated in the development of uremic cardiomyopathy.

Changes in sensory and sympathetic innervation during diabetes mellitus (DM) can be a predictor of arrhythmias, silent myocardial ischemia, and chronic heart failure, but knowledge about these changes is still unsatisfactory. We analyzed whether prolonged DM induces changes in density of sensory and sympathetic nerve terminals of rat's heart and whether it contributes to cardiomyopathy during aging. DM was induced by i/p injecting 55 mg/kg streptozotocin to male Sprague-Dawley rats, while a control group received a citrate buffer. DM in the rats was validated by measuring blood glucose level. Animals were sacrificed after 2 weeks, 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months. Five areas of cardiac sections were analyzed. Antibodies raised against tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and neurofilament 200 kDa (NF 200) were used to detect sympathetic and sensory fibers. TH immunoreactive fiber density increased in DM groups 2 weeks after induction, reaching a peek after 2 months, while in the later stages of DM (6 and 12 months), there was no significant difference compared to control. NF 200 immunoreactive fiber density increased 2 weeks after induction compared to control. There was no consistent pattern of change during the given period in both the DM or control groups. Objective Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) has recently emerged as an attractive target for neuromodulation therapy since primary sensory neurons and their soma in DRGs are important sites for pathophysiologic changes that lead to neuropathic pain. Our aim was to create evidence synthesis about the effects of electrical stimulation of DRG in the context of pain from in vitro and in vivo animal models, analyze methodology and quality of studies in the field. Methods For conducting systematic review we searched three data bases: MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science. The quality of included studies was assessed with the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation risk of bias tool for animal studies. The study was registered in the Collaborative Approach to Meta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data from Experimental Studies data base. Results We included six in vitro and eight in vivo animal studies. All included in vitro studies combined neurostimulation with substances or drugs and reported an improvement in pain-related parameters due to neurostimulation. Among in vivo studies, six used pulsed radiofrequency, while two used electrical field stimulation. All in vivo studies reported improvement in pain-related behavior following stimulation. Meta-analysis was not possible because of heterogeneity and missing data. The quality of included studies was suboptimal since all had an unclear risk of bias in multiple domains. Conclusions Limited data from in vitro and in vivo animal studies indicate that electrical stimulation of DRG has a positive therapeutic effect in the context of pain-related outcomes. Further studies with a standardized methodological approach and outcomes will provide useful information about electrical stimulation of DRG in animal models.

Objective: To analyze the amount of crestal bone loss of the mandible around implants of different diameters one year after implantation. Material and Methods: The study included a total of 42 male and female patients. A total of 73 implants were evaluated (12 implants of diameter 3.5 x 10 mm and 61 implants of diameter 4.0 x 8 mm). Dental panoramic radiographs were made before surgery, immediately after surgery and one year later. The measurements were performed using Kodak dental software 6.11.7.0 after implantation and one year later. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS v.17 software package (descriptive statistics, paired samples t-test). Results: Among male patients, 43.5% were smokers, while among females, 57.9% were nonsmokers. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine endothelin (ET)-1 and nitric oxide (NO) serum concentration levels at baseline and after 1 year of peritoneal dialysis (PD) treatment. A further aim was to evaluate the association between ET-1 and NO with parameters of echocardiography and the common carotid artery (CCA) ultrasound, and to assess their impact on cardiovascular remodeling. We also aimed to evaluate the influence of dialysis adequacy and residual renal function (RRF) on cardiovascular remodeling. Methods: This study included 40 PD patients in whom we measured serum ET-1 and NO concentrations, echocardiography and CCA ultrasound parameters. Results: ET-1 decreased and NO serum concentration levels increased (p < 0.01) after 12 months of PD treatment compared to baseline values. Left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy was observed in 77.5% of patients at baseline with significant reduction in LV mass index (LVMI), CCA intima media thickness (IMT) and plaque score after 12 months of PD treatment (p < 0.001). The dialysis adequacy and RRF were significantly associated with LVMI and CCA IMT after 12 months on PD. Conclusion: In our study, ET-1 significantly decreased while NO increased during PD treatment and both were independently related to the cardiovascular remodeling parameters in PD patients.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare hereditary disease caused by a mutation in the intracellular domain of the activin A receptor type I and is characterized by episodes (flare-ups) of progressive heterotopic endochondral ossification (HO) in the soft tissues. The mutation alone is not sufficient for the occurrence of HO since flare-ups are triggered by inflammation and activation of the innate immune system. A number of cellular and humoral mediators have been implicated in animal and in vitro models. Observations in humans support the inflammatory nature of the condition, but data on the involved mediators are variable. We hypothesize that for induction of flare-ups in patients with FOP increase in at least one of the pro-inflammatory cytokines is both essential and sufficient to trigger the entire process of the inflammatory cells influx resulting in the novel ectopic bone formation and we suggest that C-C motif ligand 5 (CCL5), a pro- inflammatory chemokine also known as Regulated on activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted (RANTES), might be the key candidate. CCL5 is a chemoattractant for all cellular types implicated in HO and is produced by the cells of the tissue microenvironment at the sites of HO as well as by the pro-inflammatory cellular mediators. CCL5 induces ossification in cultured human pluripotent mesenchymal cells (hMSCs) and in the primary culture of monocytes from FOP patients (but not from their healthy relatives), stimulation with lipopolysaccharide induces CCL5 expression. Finally, in a pilot study we used a panel of 23 cytokines and chemokines to screen the plasma samples of three subjects: a female patient with FOP during a flare-up ; a female patient with hyperostosis corticalis generalisata (van Buchem disease), another rare disease characterized by excessive bone formation at the sites where it regularly occurs that does not include inflammatory events ; and a healthy woman without bone disorders. There appeared a rather clear-cut signal of a 2-fold higher level of CCL5 in the FOP patient vs. the healthy subject and the van Buchem patient. Evaluation of the hypothesis would require an international prospective study, with main motivation being the lack of a conclusive treatment as the major unmet need in FOP. A treatment targeting CCL5 receptor already exists and is used in HIV- infected patients.

The water level in an artificial lake is important not only for the production of electric energy but also for other activities such as tourism, irrigation and drought control. The water level in the lake is influenced by various factors, among which the most important include: the water inflow, discharge of water and water seepage. In this research, artificial neural networks (ANN) are selected for the water level prediction because of their well-known abilities for learning from examples. A total of 29 years of water level measurement data was used for ANN training and validation. This paper represents a sequential approach for the short-term water level prediction in Jablanicko lake by using only water level data. With regard to sequential approach for every step of the prediction, the most recent data were used for ANN training. Two types of ANNs were used in this study: Nonlinear Autoregressive (NAR) neural networks and Feed Forward Back Propagation (FFBP) neural networks. The main focus of this study was on NAR networks prediction of water level, while FFBP networks were used for comparison purposes. The results showed that neural networks can provide quality water level prediction even if only water level data is used.

Background Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). We studied the expression of special AT-rich sequence binding protein 1 (SATB1) and phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN) in the kidneys of diabetic rats during ageing. Methods Male Sprague Dawley rats were injected with 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) (DM group) or with citrate buffer (control group). Kidneys were collected after 2 weeks, 6 months and 12 months, and were analysed in three different kidney structures: glomeruli, proximal (PCT) and distal convoluted tubules (DCT). Sections were stained immunohistochemically, using SATB1 and PTEN. Results Significant differences in marker expression were observed after 2 weeks, with higher SATB1 expression and lower PTEN expression in diabetic rats. PTEN was more highly expressed in controls after 6 and 12 months. After 12 months, there was higher SATB1 expression in diabetic rats. In the glomeruli, control rats had higher PTEN expression, whereas diabetic rats had higher SATB1 expression, after 12 months. PTEN expression increased from 2 weeks to 12 months in both the PCT and DCT of control rats. SATB1 was expressed exclusively in the PCT of diabetic rats after 2 weeks, and its expression in the DCT was higher in controls. After 6 months, both the PCT and DCT showed higher SATB1 expression in diabetic rats. Conclusions The major changes in expression of SATB1 and PTEN occur after 2 weeks of DM onset, particularly in the PCT, implying an early onset of pathophysiological changes in diabetic kidneys, which would normally occur with ageing. These findings help to contribute to our understanding of changes associated with DN and guide towards possible appropriate treatment modalities.

Serotyping of five rabies virus isolates with monoclonal anti-nucleoprotein antibodies for classical rabies virus and rabies-related viruses and phylogenetic relationships among sequences indicate that viruses circulating in population of animals in Bosnia and Herzegovina belong to the sero-genotype 1 of classical rabies virus. Phylogenetic relationships among sequences of our viruses have shown the presence of two phylogenetic lines, one which is present in the northwestern part and other which is present in the northeastern part of the country. Introduction: Acute kidney injury is characterized by a rapid loss of renal excretory function with the increase of nitrogen compounds in the blood and with different outcome. Objective: Since descriptions of the risk factors and sequelae of acute kidney injury (AKI) remain relatively limited, the objective of this study was to determine etiology and clinical characteristics of AKI, as well as risk factors for adverse outcome of renal function and death in AKI patients. Methods: We retrospectively studied a cohort of 84 adult AKI patients admitted to Nephrology Clinic in University Clinical Centre Sarajevo during period 2012-2014. Demographic, laboratory and clinical parameters were retrieved. The in-hospital and 6 months mortality were recorded. Renal function outcome was defined 3 months following discharge. Results: Majority of patients were older (median age 73.5 years) with great severity of AKI (Stage III in 78.5% of cases) and high burden of comorbidities (mean Charlson comorbidity index, CCI score 6.4±3.05). The most common causes of AKI were acute interstitial nephritis (16.7%), heart failure (15.5%), gastroenterocolitis (13.1%), and sepsis (12%). Renal function recovery was recorded in 48.8% of patients, with prevalence of 10.7% of intrahospital mortality and 37.3% of 6 months mortality. Risk factors for poor outcome of renal function and mortality in AKI patients were increasing age and higher CCI score, while protective factor was higher diuresis. Sepsis proved to be risk factor for death.

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate prognostic impact of clinical factors on outcome of renal function in septic and non-septic acute kidney injury (AKI) patients. Methods: The prospective, observational, clinical study was performed at Nephrology Clinic and Clinic for Infectious Diseases, University Clinical Centre Sarajevo. One hundred patients with diagnosis of AKI were enrolled in the study, and divided into two groups: septic and non-septic AKI patients. Clinical parameters included causes and type of AKI, pre-existing comorbidities and different treatment modalities. Patients were followed up until discharge or death. Renal function outcome was defined by creatinine clearance values at discharge. Materijali i metode: U istraživanju su sudjelovala devetorica pacijenata s indikacijama za jednostrano ili obostrano podizanje dna sinusa. Augmentacijski materijali korišteni u ovom postupku bili su MinerOss® Cortical - Cancellous te Ossceram nano. Rezultati: Svi su se implantati pokazali uspješnima. ISQ vrijednosti mjerene su mjeračem Osstell ISQ, a bile su između 68 i 84. Srednje vrijednosti stabilnosti implantata Bredent Sky Blue različitih promjera nakon podizanja dna sinusa iznosile su 77,73 ± 2,93 (MD) i 77,98 ± 2,72 (VO)., Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the implant stability of Bredent Sky Blue implants of different diameters following one stage sinus lift procedure. Material and methods: This study included 9 male patients with an existing indication for unilateral or bilateral sinus lift procedure. As grafting materials, combination of allograft material MinerOss® cortical & cancellous and Ossceram nano were used. Results: All implants were considered successful and ISQ levels were measured by Osstell ISQ device. The ISQ values were from 68 to 84. The mean values of stability of Bredent Sky Blue implants of different diameters following one stage sinus lift procedure were 77.73 ± 2.93 (MD) and 77.98 ± 2.72 (VO).

Brucella spp. prosthetic joint infections are infrequently reported in the literature, particularly in returning travellers, and optimal treatment is unknown.METHOD:We describe a prosthetic joint infection (PJI) caused by Brucella melitensis in a traveller returning to the UK from Thailand, which we believe to be the first detailed report of brucellosis in a traveller returning from this area. The 23 patients with Brucella-related PJI reported in the literature are summarised, together with our case.RESULTS:The diagnosis of Brucella-related PJI is difficult to make; only 30% of blood cultures and 75% of joint aspiration cultures were positive in the reported cases. Culture of intraoperative samples provides the best diagnostic yield. In the absence of radiological evidence of joint loosening, combination antimicrobial therapy alone may be appropriate treatment in the first instance; this was successful in 6/7 [86%] of patients, though small numbers of patients and the likelihood of reporting bias warrant caution in drawing any firm conclusions about optimal treatment. Aerosolisation of synovial fluid during joint aspiration procedures and nosocomial infection has been described.CONCLUSIONS:Brucella-related PJI should be considered in the differential of travellers returning from endemic areas with PJI, including Thailand. Personal protective equipment including fit tested filtering face piece-3 (FFP3) mask or equivalent is recommended for personnel carrying out joint aspiration when brucellosis is suspected. Travellers can reduce the risk of brucellosis by avoiding unpasteurised dairy products and animal contact (particularly on farms and abattoirs) in endemic areas and should be counselled regarding these risks as part of their pre-travel assessment.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, weakly pathogenic bacterium able to grow also at the temperature of 40 degrees C. A man most often gets affected by consuming contaminated food and water. Animals can carry bacteria although they have not to appear ill, then their meat and milk products are the source of infection of human being. The disease most often attacks with the weak immune system, newborns and pregnant women. That what is significant, listeria penetrates through the placenta and can lead to the fatal infection, which is characteristic by disseminated granulomatosis lesions of a newborn and micro abscess on the placenta. In a newborn can provoke the sepsis with the mortality of 50%. By the examination are encircled two groups of the reproductive age-totally 60. From these 30 had one or more spontaneous abortion, and 30 had no spontaneous abortion. By the serologic reaction the agglutination is discovered the presence of the antibodies in serum of the. The positive serologic answer was found in the first group in 18 (60%) and in that another group in 8 participants (26, 70%).

Microscopic demonstration of chlamydial inclusions within cells offered the first laboratory procedure supporting the clinical diagnosis of chlamydial infection. Our aim is to evaluate the usefulness of different endocervical staining methods in diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection within exfoliated cells of the endocervix. The cytological test for the detection of chlamydial inclusions in genital tract infection, though not as sensitive and specific as isolation in the cell culture monolayers, is still of the diagnostic value. The present study discusses the collection of clinical smears for microscopic examination, their preparation; fixation and staining of slides by a variety of staining methods that have been used to detect Chlamydia in clinical smears and biopsies. Most of these methods such as Giemsa stain, Papanicolaou, iodine, and immunofluorescence (IF) using monoclonal antibodies, are based on the combination of dyes designed to obtain optimum differentiation of the various structures. The utilization of different endocervical smear stains together with the clinical information can be used to identify women at high risk for CT infection.

Introduction: Inflammatory markers have been identified as potential indicators of future adverse outcome after acute cardiac events. Aim: This study aimed to analyze baseline inflammatory cytokines levels in patients with acute heart failure (AHF) and/or acute coronary syndrome (ACS) according to survival. The main objective was to identify risk factors for mortality after an episode of AHF and/or ACS. Methods: In this prospective longitudinal study 75 patients with the diagnosis of AHF and/or ACS were enrolled. Baseline laboratory and clinical data were retrieved. Serum and urine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) levels, plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and serum cystatin C values were determined. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality while secondary outcome was six-month mortality. Results: Median serum and urine IL-6 levels, serum and urine IL-18 levels, as well as median concentrations of plasma BNP and serum cystatin C, were significantly increased in deceased in comparison to surviving AHF and/or ACS patients. Univariate Cox regression analysis identified serum IL-6, serum IL-18, urine IL-6, urine IL-18 as well as serum cystatin C and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score as risk factors for mortality after an episode of AHF and/or ACS. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that only serum IL-6 is the independent risk factor for mortality after acute cardiac events (HR 61.7, 95% CI 2.1-1851.0; p=0.018). Conclusion: Present study demonstrated the strong prognostic value of serum IL-6 in predicting mortality of patients with AHF and/or ACS.

Q fever is a zoonotic disease with worldwide distribution. It occurs in different geographic regions and climate zones. From 1990 till the end of 1997, only three infected individuals were registered in Bosnia and Herzegovina, during the year 1991, with the incidence of 0.05% 000. From 1996 onward, there was a sudden aggravation of epizoological and epidemiological situation in particular regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We performed serotesting during the 4-year period from 2000 to 2003. We tested serum samples from 708 individuals from different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Q fever was serologically diagnosed in 249 individuals. The overall seroprevalence was 35.2%. The acute disease form was confirmed in 79.9% of the whole seropositive sample. Most of the Q seropositive individuals were from Kakanj (17.3%), Mostar (15.3%), Sarajevo (12.5%), Bihac (9.6%), Zenica (9.2%), Gornji Vakuf (8.9%), Tesanj (4.4%), Visoko (2.8%), and Travnik (2.4%). The number and distribution of seropositive individuals suggests that Q fever is endemic in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Zoonoses are animal and human diseases. Q fever is primarily a zoonosis-an animal disease that can be transmitted to humans under certain conditions. Recent epidemiological studies suggest that Q fever should be considered as a public health problem in many countries where it is present, but unrecognizable due to inadequate disease controls. Through specific serological diagnosis of clinically suspected human Q fever cases, we are trying to determine a level of general Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii) exposition among populations in different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This would be a contribution in controlling the present and the future disease outbreaks, as well as its prevention, which is one of the prime objectives of public health. During the period from January to June 2004, in the Laboratory of the Department for Microbiology in the Medical Faculty of the University of Sarajevo, of 58 tested sera from 48 clinically suspected individuals, we confirmed the presence of specific anti-C. burnetii antibodies in 30 sera (51.7%), from 25 seropositive individuals (52.0%), by means of indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) testing. Urgent steps must be taken in public education to help decrease the risk of C. burnetii infection among at-risk populations in regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Typhus exanthematicus in Bosnia and Herzegovina held in endemic areas from which especially quickly began spread after 1945. That year, in 1945, one hundred epidemics of typhus fever appeared, with the highest incidence rate in Europe of 215.04 per 1,000. Directions of unique program in the world were to eradicate lice of the body, but also establish monitoring of the recidivism, Brill-Zinsser disease. Since 1971, typhus exanthematicus (classical typhus) hasn't appeared in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so epidemic typhus can considered as an eradicated communicable disease.

The study involved 286 individuals from different regions of Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose sera were tested in the Laboratory for specific diagnosis of human brucellosis in Microbiology Department of Medical Faculty of University in Sarajevo, during the period from 2000. to 2003. Sera were tested using Brucelloslide Test, qualitative agglutination test Rose Bengal. Using the agglutination test, we serologically confirmed a diagnosis of human brucellosis in 59 (20.62%) seropositive individuals, whereof 38 (64.40%) men and 21 (35.60%) women. Individuals with human brucellosis were the most present in the age group of 31-40 (22.03%) and 41-50 (22.03%). One serologically confirmed death case was registered. The most seropositive individuals were from Zenica-Doboj Canton (32.20%), Sarajevo Canton (28.82%), Herzegovina-Neretva Canton (23.73%), Central Bosnia Canton (13.55%) and Una-Sana Canton (1.70%). During our four-year study, it was serologically confirmed that human brucellosis is present in Bosnia and Herzegovina and, through seropositive testing, we revealed the level of general exposition to Brucella spp. on wider area of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Respiratory, gastrointestinal and skin diseases represent the most common diseases in infants and young children. Causal factors of these diseases are important infectious agents and causes of pathological conditions in children, but they are also very important for their parents, as well as for people in their close environment. Greater incidence of infections in infants and young children can be explained in different ways. A cause can be insufficient maturity of their immune system, but also their exposure to infections within collective ac-comodations (cribs, nurseries, pre-school institutions), where they are, at the same time, exposed to a number of unknown agents. Today, a great emphasis is devoted to the ways and kinds of children’s nutrition. The problem of relation between infected young organism and infectious agent itself is also reflected in a long resistance and excretion of microorganisms in their exterior environment. It is well-known that microorganisms resist and excrete much longer in younger organisms, compared to adults, where their resistance and excretion is much shorter or very rare. Actually, adults have already formed protective immunity against particular infectious agents. It doesn’t prevent infections in adults, colonization of pathogènes, nor eventual development of disease. Established immunity can shorten the time necessary for excretion of microorganisms in their exterior environment and, if disease gets developed, it is of shorter duration and slower progress.

Rotaviruses are the major causes of viral gastroenteritis in infant and the young children. There are a wide spectrum of clinical signs and symptoms of rotavirosis. Rotavirus infection is fecal-oral infection. Rotaviruses prove with Latex agglutination test and electron microscopy. In a four year period 943 stool samples out of 527 hospitalized patients had been analyzed. A presence of rotavirus is proved with a LA and EM tests at 170 (32,2%) patients age 0-7 years, in their stool samples. Analyzing age groups of these patients, it was found that the rotavirusesinfection the most frequently occurred at age group from 7-24 months. From 170 positive patients, 122 or 71,8% were in this age group. At all patients was found diarrhea, vomiting in a 90,5% cases. Mild fever had 65,5% patients, signs of a respiratory infection appeared at 60,7% patients, abdominal pain at 13,3% patients. Severe dehydration had 49,9% patients and metabolic acidosis had 79,2% cases. Macroscopically blood in stool had 6,4% patients, slime in a stool 46,0% patients was found, and aholic stool had 8,4% patients. In all hospitalized patients disease lasted in average 12,6 days, and the hospitalization in average 10,2 days. None of the patient had any kind of complication, all of them very successfully cured. These results confirm that rotaviruses are important health problem among infant and the young children in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Q fever is caused by C. burnetii, an intracellular obligate bacterium. For clinical confirmation of Q fever, diagnosis of interstitial pneumonia is of significance. The acute disease varies in severity from minor to fatal, with the possibility of serious complications. Chronic endocarditis is a well-known outcome. Symptoms of Q fever can vary; fixing diagnosis is done by serology with the phase I and the phase II antibody. We tested 44 sera of 31 clinically suspect patients. From these, 22 patients were taken to the infection clinic, 8 to the pulmonary clinic, and one to the general hospital. From the 31 patients, 21 patients had one serum, 7 patients, 2 sera, and 3 patients, 3 sera. Blood samples were collected by vein puncture, and serum samples were kept at -20 degrees C until testing. All sera were processed by indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) Q fever IgM and IgG. Of 44 processed sera, 21 were seropositive. Specific IgM antibody was found in sera of 6 patients (19.4%), and specific IgG antibody in sera of 16 patients (51.2%). In sera of 15 clinically suspect patients (48.3%), no specific anticoxiella antibody was found. From these results we can confirm the importance of serology in laboratory diagnosis and clinical affirmation of suspect Q fever. Indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) is reliable and appropriate for daily, routine diagnosis of human Q fever.

Introduction: Endoscopic surgery and endourological procedures imply the use of special instruments that are introduced into the urinary system through the urethra and percutaneous techniques that allow ante grade access to the urinary tract. The risk of urinary tract infection after endourological procedures and the use of antibiotic prophylaxis for these procedures is a question about which there is no unique opinion. Goal: The objective of this study was to determine the connection between endourological procedures and occurrence of urinary infections and to analyze the risk factors of urinary infection for patients who were hospitalized at the Urology Clinic of the Clinical Center University of Sarajevo (CCUS). Material and methods: The research was conducted as a prospective study on a sample of 208 patients of both genders, who were hospitalized at the Urology Clinic of the CCUS and to whom one of endourological procedures was indicated either for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. All patients were clinically examined prior to endoscopic procedures and after the treatment attention was focused on the symptoms of urinary tract infections. Results: Analysis of the presence of postoperative bacteriuria shows that it has been more common in men or in 48 cases (28.1%) compared to women with 8 cases (21.6%) (p>0.05). Preoperative catheterization was statistically significantly more present in patients who have had a postoperative bacteriuria (16 or 28.6%) compared to those without bacteriuria (8 or 5.3%) (p 0.05). Analysis of the correlation coefficient indicates that a statistically significant effect on the occurrence of postoperative bacteriuria have preoperative bacteriuria, duration of postoperative catheterization and duration of hospital stay, as well as the total duration of hospitalization before and after endourological treatment (p

Lupus nephritis (LN) is an immune inflammation of kidneys caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the body's immune system. Aim of this study was to analyze clinical manifestation and treatment results of patients with LN. Forty one patients with clinical signs of LN were included in the study. Mean age of patients was 31.9+/-12.1 years in the moment of first diagnosis of LN, with female-male ratio 8:1. Renal disease was pathohistologically (PTH) verified in 53.7% of patients (4 pts with class III, 17 pts with class IV, one pt with class V of lupus nephrites). Patients with high nephrotic proteinuria were treated with pulse dose of methylprednisolone and pulse doses of cyclophosphamide (CYC) in induction therapy. Corticosteroid and CYC were continued according to treatment protocol. The other group of LN patients with lower nephrotic proteinuria was treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) in induction therapy at a dose of 2x1 g/day for six months, and than in maintenance 2x0.5 g/day. The patients with non-nephrotic proteinuria and normal renal function were treated with oral prednisolone 0.75-1 mg/kg/day in a single morning dose, and then gradually reduced to the dose of maintenance. The mean time of patient's follow-up was 10.9+/-4.1 years. Partial renal remission was accomplished in 29.2% pts, and complete remission in 60.9% pts for period of 17.2+/-13.3 months from the beginning of the treatment. Duration of complete renal remission was 30.1+/-19.1 months. During the period of follow-up, 29.3% pts developed at least one nephritic flare and were treated again. These results confirmed that the aggressive form of lupus nephritis should be treated associating cyclophosphamide with corticosteroids therapeutical regiment. MMF is a new promising immunosuppressive drug for a treatment of this serious disease.

International audience; SrTiO3 becomes a high-mobility metallic conductor when doped with oxygen vacancies at low concentrations (≥1016 cm−3). We show that the vacancy concentration in the SrTiO3 single crystal substrates could be controllably tuned by changing the thickness of oxide films (deposited by pulsed laser deposition at high temperature and low oxygen pressure). The obtained variation in the carrier density strongly influences the transport properties. The quantitative analysis of the experimental results leads toward new and accurate strategies for the design of multifunctional oxide heterostructures for electronics and spintronics.
