Artificial intelligence (AI) systems offer effective support for online learning and teaching, including personalizing learning for students, automating instructors’ routine tasks, and powering adaptive assessments. However, while the opportunities for AI are promising, the impact of AI systems on the culture of, norms in, and expectations about interactions between students and instructors are still elusive. In online learning, learner–instructor interaction (inter alia, communication, support, and presence) has a profound impact on students’ satisfaction and learning outcomes. Thus, identifying how students and instructors perceive the impact of AI systems on their interaction is important to identify any gaps, challenges, or barriers preventing AI systems from achieving their intended potential and risking the safety of these interactions. To address this need for forward-looking decisions, we used Speed Dating with storyboards to analyze the authentic voices of 12 students and 11 instructors on diverse use cases of possible AI systems in online learning. Findings show that participants envision adopting AI systems in online learning can enable personalized learner–instructor interaction at scale but at the risk of violating social boundaries. Although AI systems have been positively recognized for improving the quantity and quality of communication, for providing just-in-time, personalized support for large-scale settings, and for improving the feeling of connection, there were concerns about responsibility, agency, and surveillance issues. These findings have implications for the design of AI systems to ensure explainability, human-in-the-loop, and careful data collection and presentation. Overall, contributions of this study include the design of AI system storyboards which are technically feasible and positively support learner–instructor interaction, capturing students’ and instructors’ concerns of AI systems through Speed Dating, and suggesting practical implications for maximizing the positive impact of AI systems while minimizing the negative ones.

There is growing interest in applying gamification to adaptive learning systems to motivate and engage students during the learning process. However, previous studies have reported unexpected results about student outcomes in these systems. One of the causes of these unfavorable effects is the lack of monitoring and adaptation of gamification design when students do not achieve the expected objectives during the learning process. Based on this, this paper explores twenty design concepts to enable teachers to monitor and adapt the gamification design of adaptive learning systems. This research uses the speed dating method with fifteen teachers to validate these concepts in a consistent way with the “gamification analytics model for teachers.” According to this model, teachers can define interaction goals, monitor students’ interaction with learning resources and gamification elements, and adapt the gamification design by creating missions to help students achieve defined interaction goals. The results of this research indicate that teachers found it valuable and relevant to visualize students’ interaction with gamification elements, such as missions and levels, to help them understand their students’ status. In contrast, they poorly evaluated the visualization of students’ interaction with the trophies. Teachers also highly considered creating customized missions for a student or a specific group to help students engage and achieve the desired learning goals. The teachers’ opinions on the design concepts provide relevant insights to support them in the monitoring and adaptation phases of gamification in adaptive educational systems.

This paper presents a study of a messaging interface prototype for online dating intended to improve women's face-to-face meeting decisions, and therefore the capacity to manage the gendered risks involved with such meetings. The interface prompts users with discussion topics that are potentially more valuable for user evaluation than the impression management-motivated topics often chosen by men. These topics come in the form of first-date scenarios that messaging partners either agree or disagree on. Through a mixed-methods study utilizing speed dating events, daters used the interface to interact before meeting face-to-face. Results indicate that women's face-to-face meeting decisions improve when the interface prompts them to discuss scenarios involving agreement of opinion. Men's decisions are worsened by the same interface variant, potentially due to the displayed agreement being misinterpreted as a signal of compatibility. The study ultimately stresses that designs intended for women, and at-risk groups more broadly, must also be assessed with other user demographics-namely those that pose a risk-to identify unforeseen implications.

The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate the impacts of speed dating on the enhancement of university-business collaboration. With the example of the metropolitan region of Prague and its largest university (Charles University), the case study on a speed dating event was organized by this University in the field of life science and medical devices. The results show, that speed dating itself has limited direct impact on real technology transfer. Only 1 of the 44 newly gained contacts was transformed into real cooperation in the form of consultancy. On the other hand, speed dating has several indirect impacts, which can moderate fragmentation of the regional innovation system, i.e. community and trust building, learning of common “language” and exchange of information. Direct impact can be enhanced by the follow-up activities of dedicated people (e.g. technology scouts or business development managers), who can encourage and support creation of more new technology partnerships.

Mentorship in medicine has long been a vital component to the training, development, and career advancement of physicians. While optimal strategies for facilitating mentorship relationships are unknown, it is recognized that establishing a formalized mentorship program within residency training may augment mentor-mentee pairing, improve overall trainee experience, and enhance resident perception of strong mentoring relationships. A formalized mentorship program was successfully developed in a Canadian physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program, including innovations such as near-peer self matching, a needs assessment survey, a speed dating event, formation of 'link groups' and 'fireside chats' with faculty members. This approach may serve as a guide for other medical education and residency programs seeking to implement a similar concept.

PurposeThis paper aims to focus on Brazilian business fairs primarily attended by metalworking companies.Design/methodology/approachUsing a qualitative and exploratory approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews answered by exhibitor companies from two of the most relevant Brazilian states in this industrial sector: Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.FindingsThe results recognize the four pillars of the interorganizational relationship developed among exhibitors at business fairs and launch serious implications for the effective development of business fairs as spaces of interorganizational relationship and of value creation.Originality/valueThis is the first study discussing the trade fairs of the Brazilian emerging industry related to the metal-mechanic sector of two of the most significant states in the country: Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

Do you ever feel like you lack a personal connection with your secondary care colleagues? Do you miss the ‘doctors’ lounge’ when you met and chatted over coffee? Would you take time for a speed dating event to get to know your fellow healthcare professionals? Would you value the opportunity to meet your secondary care colleagues in person? There is clear evidence — anecdotal and peer-reviewed — on the barriers to an effective ‘bridge’ or ‘interface’ between primary and secondary healthcare professionals. Background Resident-resident mentoring offers significant benefits. Previous works have shown that the quality of the mentorship pairing is important, but techniques of pairing have seldom been described. We describe a system for mentor-mentee pairing that we call “Speed Dating for Mentors” (SDM). Methods The SDM activity took place in an academic general surgery residency program in the Northeast. Senior residents met with junior residents (JR) in 90-second intervals. On completion of interviews, residents documented their top three choices—this was used to create senior-junior resident pairings. A cross-sectional Likert survey was conducted with univariate analysis of satisfaction with the SDM event. Results Forty-two surgical residents participated in SDM—23 junior residents and 19 senior residents—resulting in 23 mentor-mentee pairings. Fourteen pairs were generated, where both mentor and mentee were among top three choices, seven pairings generated where either/or was a top three choice, and two pairings were assigned; six pairs were assigned for nonattendees. A total of 36 surveys were completed—28 (78%) respondents participated in SDM compared to eight (22%) who did not. Eighty-five percent of respondents who attended were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their pairing compared to only 12% of nonattendees ( P = 0.001). Conclusions “Speed dating” is a novel approach to forming mentorship pairings and identifying mentors/mentees with similar interests. Residents who attended the event were satisfied with the event and with the outcome of their mentor/mentee pairing. Further investigations are warranted to determine what effects resident mentoring has on resident performance, stress levels, and well-being.

Objective To determine if a novel interdisciplinary “speed-dating” clinic augments Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES). Methods Adult patients with diabetes attended a DSMES class. Two weeks later patients attended an interdisciplinary clinic utilizing a “speed-dating” format during which they progressed through 5 stations hosted by different healthcare disciplines at 30-minute increments: physician, pharmacist, nurse/dietitian, case manager, and psychologist. Shared decision-making was utilized to identify mutually agreeable recommendations. Change in clinical outcomes were compared for DSMES-only attenders versus Dual-attendees; utilization of emergency department and hospital services were measured 12 months before and after attending the Speed Dating clinic. This analysis represents patients attending the program during 2016. Results Sixty-nine attended the DSMES class, 40 of whom followed-up in the “speed-dating” clinic (58% return rate). Attending the Speed Dating clinic improved A1C (p = 0.003) and LDL-C (p = 0.003) compared to the DSMES class alone. Comparatively, after attending the speed-dating clinic, patients had fewer emergency department (p = 0.366) and hospital admissions (p = 0.036), and shorter lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.030). Conclusions The interdisciplinary “speed-dating” approach improved diabetes outcomes beyond DSMES alone and reduced utilization of hospital services. Practice implications Patients should attend DSMES but also participate in an Interdisciplinary Speed Dating follow-up to further improve outcomes.

As user experience (UX) design continues to grow and expand, designers often work in areas with few design patterns or social mores. It is easy to make things that people do not want or will not adopt. To help avoid this problem, we developed a method called speed dating. This method allows design teams to explore possible futures with target users. Speed dating helps to reduce the risk of making things that people will not adopt. It also discloses opportunities and user needs that design teams might not observe during fieldwork. Over the last decade, we have used this method in many research projects, teaching it to hundreds of UX design students. This article describes the speed dating method, presenting cases to show how speed dating aids UX design.

Over the years, connection websites and speed dating events have increasingly attracted singles and couples who cannot have a child in the ‘traditional' way. These initiatives bring together candidate gamete providers and recipients with the promise of offering more freedom of choice than fertility centres or sperm banks currently do. Depending on the level of contact desired, the role of the gamete provider may range from not being involved at all to sharing full parental rights and obligations. In this paper, we take a look at the ethical and social issues that emerge with these new forms of family arrangements. We suggest that, although the private arrangements promote greater autonomy and control for all parties involved, risks and questionable assumptions are also at play. In particular, risks involve insufficient screening of the involved donor or co-parent, particularly in terms of motives and psychological characteristics. One must also be wary of the risk of unregulated commercialization and, more importantly, of disappointments and legal conflicts caused by unclear or changing expectations. We also warn for the risk of reinforcing heterosexist and genetic norms of parenting and valid family building.

Housing quality can impact quality of life factors such as physical health and finances. However, prospective tenants lack critical information about things like utility costs and landlord quality. Our contribution is a series of three studies exploring the complexities of the information economy around rental housing, including information available to landlords but not tenants, as well as information tenants may not prioritize until after lease signing about their own desires. Our first mixed methods study demonstrates that tenants cannot easily predict factors impacting the quality of life when selecting a rental and need better information about rental housing and the overall rental system. Using speed dating, we explore scenarios premised on information sharing and quality of life to analyze risks and rewards of crowdsourced information collection and sharing within a multi-stakeholder peer-to-peer rental search system. Finally, we present eDigs, a rental search system we have deployed to enhance the information economy for prospective tenants using a combination of opinion, implicit observation, and communal information. We also explore user responses to the system.

Modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) support job searches, resume creation, career development, and professional self-presentation. However, these technological tools are often tailored to high-income, highly educated users and white-collar professionals. It is unclear what interventions address the needs of job seekers who have limited resources or education, or who may be underserved in other ways. We gathered insights from the literature and generated ten tangible design concepts to address the needs of underserved job seekers. We then conducted a needs validation and speed dating study to understand which concepts were most viable among our population. We found that the three most preferred concepts immediately addressed job seekers' social and personal needs, where addressing social needs meant mediating job seekers' connections to others and supporting our job seekers' limited access to strong ties.

In this paper, we demonstrate the importance of combinations of facial expressions and their timing, in explaining a person's conversational skills in a series of brief non-romantic conversations. Video recordings of 365 four-minute conversations before and after a randomized intervention were analyzed in which facial action units (AUs) were examined over different time segments. Male subjects (N=47) were evaluated in their conversation skills using the Conversational Skills Rating Scale (CSRS). A linear regression model was used to compare the importance of AU features from different time segments in predicting CSRS ratings. In the first minute of conversation, CSRS ratings were best predicted by activity levels in action units associated with speaking (Lips part, AU25). In the last minute of conversation, affective indicators associated with expressions of laughter (Jaw Drop, AU26) and warmth (Happy faces) emerged as the most important. These findings suggest that feedback on nonverbal skills must dynamically account for shifting goals of conversation.

In this paper we perform a variety of analytical techniques on a speed dating dataset collected from 2002–2004. There have previously been papers published analyzing this dataset however we have focused on a previously unexplored area of the data; that of self-image and self-perception. We have evaluated whether the decision to meet again or not following a date can be predicted to any degree of certainty when focusing only on the self-ratings and partner ratings from the event. Further to this we have examined how the decisions received after the session can affect the stability of one’s self-image over time. We also performed some general exploratory analysis of this dataset in the area of self-image and self-perception; evaluating the importance of these attributes in the grand scheme of attaining a positive result from a 4 min date.

Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) are commonly designed to enhance student learning. However, they are not typically designed to meet the needs of teachers who use them in their classrooms. ITSs generate a wealth of analytics about student learning and behavior, opening a rich design space for real-time teacher support tools such as dashboards. Whereas real-time dashboards for teachers have become popular with many learning technologies, we are not aware of projects that have designed dashboards for ITSs based on a broad investigation of teachers' needs. We conducted design interviews with ten middle school math teachers to explore their needs for on-the-spot support during blended class sessions, as a first step in a user-centered design process of a real-time dashboard. Based on multi-methods analyses of this interview data, we identify several opportunities for ITSs to better support teachers' needs, noting that the analytics commonly generated by existing teacher support tools do not strongly align with the analytics teachers expect to be most useful. We highlight key tensions and tradeoffs in the design of such real-time supports for teachers, as revealed by "Speed Dating" possible futures with teachers. This paper has implications for our ongoing co-design of a real-time dashboard for ITSs, as well as broader implications for the design of ITSs that can effectively collaborate with teachers in classroom settings.

Mailing lists you are signed up for are reminding you to check out "Innovation Days" and "Hackathons" sponsored by companies visiting campus for recruiting. Doing all this in the middle of an already overscheduled day when you'd rather be going to class to learn, finishing lab reports, or just being out throwing a ball around, is a rather unappealing option. Do not despair! Having toiled on both sides-from selling myself to employers, to selling my employers on prospective candidates-I proffer a few suggestions that will make this season's career fair, as well as any on-the-spot or next-day interviews, much less stressful and allow you to get the most out of them!

To stimulate the formation of new interdisciplinary translational research teams and innovative pilot projects, the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research (SCTR) Institute (South Carolina Clinical and Translational Science Award, CTSA) initiated biannual scientific retreats with ‘speed dating’ networking sessions. Retreat themes were prioritized based on the following criteria; cross-cutting topic, unmet medical need, generation of novel technologies and methodologies. Each retreat begins with an external keynote speaker followed by a series of brief research presentations by local researchers focused on the retreat theme, articulating potential areas for new collaborations. After each session of presentations, there is a 30 min scientific ‘speed dating’ period during which the presenters meet with interested attendees to exchange ideas and discuss collaborations. Retreat attendees are eligible to compete for pilot project funds on the topic of the retreat theme. The 10 retreats held have had a total of 1004 participants, resulted in 61 pilot projects with new interdisciplinary teams, and 14 funded projects. The retreat format has been a successful mechanism to stimulate novel interdisciplinary research teams and innovative translational research projects. Future retreats will continue to target topics of cross-cutting importance to biomedical and public health research.

Teens' financial literacy, their ability to understand financial concepts and make effective decisions, is an important topic in the US. Educational programs targeted at teens have had little impact. Our study investigated if parents should play a role in teaching their teens. We conducted a literature review on teenage financial literacy and a competitive analysis of current tools. We interviewed parents and teens, probing on what teens know and how they learned these concepts. We conducted speed dating sessions, exposing parents and teens to provocative services meant to trigger conversations about financial values. These included a system where parents gave loans and charged interest and a game where teens guessed the prices of family expenses. Results showed a strong interest for tools that allow parents to educate their teens. Concepts worked best when they addressed teens' current needs and when they allowed parents to influence spending based on values.

Dating apps on smartphones have brought speed dating on the Internet to a new level. This exploratory investigation sought to determine what kinds of people use these apps, what their motivations are, and what precautions they take before meeting someone. One hundred and seventy-three non-users and 57 current users of dating apps were surveyed. The data suggest that the strongest motive for using dating apps is not for dating or sex, but for entertainment. On the other hand, the more frequent users of these apps are people whose personalities are predisposed towards varied sexual partners. These different motives may represent a disconnect between those who wish to kill time and those who are seeking sexual partners.

When Sainsbury's recruit checkout assistants, candidates complete a detailed application form and attend a two-part interview lasting up to one-and-a-half hours. The majority of interviews for recruitment to specialty training in 2007 lasted 30 minutes. Is 30 minutes long enough to make an assessment about whether a junior doctor possesses the skills necessary to become a consultant surgeon?

Delegates at scientific meetings can come from diverse backgrounds and use very different methods in their research. Promoting interactions between these ‘distant’ delegates is challenging but such interactions could lead to novel interdisciplinary collaborations and unexpected breakthroughs. We have developed a network-based ‘speed dating’ approach that allows us to initiate such distant interactions by pairing every delegate with another delegate who might be of interest to them, but whom they might never have encountered otherwise. Here we describe our approach and its algorithmic implementation.

Smart Metering is one of the most important services within the Smart Grid. But by threatening the privacy of customers, its introduction poses also one of the most discussed challenges of the Smart grid. To overcome this challenge, privacy-aware Smart Metering protocols are necessary. But the limited capabilities of the Smart Metering infrastructure has to be taken into account when specifying Smart Metering protocols. In this paper, we propose Smart Meter Speed Dating (SMSD), a privacy-aware Smart Metering protocol with very low requirements and complexity. It uses rapidly changing pairings of peers to remove privacy relevant information from meter readings. We describe SMSD and provide an evaluation and anlyzation of provided privacy which shows its applicability as a privacy-aware Smart Metering protocol.

Language is a subtle and powerful tool for communication. But the words we use also provide a rich mine of information for the social scientist. The history of words like "ketchup", "ceviche", or "dessert" tells us about the relationships between the superpowers who dominated the globe 500 or 1000 years ago. The words on the back of potato chip packages can demonstrate popular attitudes toward social class. And the names we give ice cream flavors may be an evolutionary reflex of the attempt by early mammals to appear larger than their competitors. The language of dating is just as informative as the language of food. In experiments with speed dating, work in our lab shows that we can detect flirtation or other stances in men and women on dates, just by looking at linguistic features like their pitch, their use of negative words like "can't" or "don't", or how often they use hedges like "sort of" or "kind of". The language of these two popular topics of conversation, food and dating, can teach us a lot about history, culture, and psychology.

The purpose of this paper is to inspire other educators to aspire to true collaboration in student projects by presenting experiences from two course instances where speed dating were used in the light of constructive controversy ideas. The educational setting is an international student project based on an open ended group project framework in which scaffolding is introduced to ensure that essential teamwork skills become part of the learning experience for the students. An action research approach has been used by the authors to both develop the course and acquire information about the learning outcomes. The particular focus in this paper is to report findings about if and how constructive controversy can be used in the scaffolding.

Background: Junior faculty members have difficulty in identifying mentors. Speed dating permits people to efficiently try out interpersonal relationships.Aim: Evaluate a “speed mentoring” event to help junior faculty answer questions and initiate mentoring relationships.Methods: This single-group pre–post study involved junior (mentee) and senior (mentor) faculty members at an academic medical center. During the event, each mentee spent 10 min talking with each mentor in rotation.Results: Seven mentees and six mentors participated. All participants felt that time was well spent (mentees, mean [SD] = 6.3 [0.8] on a seven-point Likert scale [7 = strongly agree]; mentors, 5.7 [1.4]). Topics discussed included mentoring relationships, getting started in research, and time management.Conclusions: Participants perceived benefits from this low-cost, brief intervention to facilitate mentoring relationships.

As long as people have traveled, they have constructed bags to help them carry more items than their hands will hold. While quite effective at keeping things together, bags do a poor job of communicating when something is missing. We propose that there exists an opportunity for the HCI community to improve the quality of people's lives by creating bags that have knowledge of people's schedules and equipment needs, can sense their contents, and can communicate when something has been forgotten. To investigate this opportunity, we conducted a field study with six dual-income families. Through interviews and observations we investigated their experiences using bags to organize equipment needed for children's enrichment activities. Based on the findings we generated 100 concepts and conducted a needs validation session to better understand the best opportunity to improve people's lives with technical intervention. This paper reports on our field study and needs validation session, and shares insights on the opportunities and implications of a smart activity bag.

research, we will go on to review some practical tips and approaches to exploring spiritual needs of these children. Skills reviewed will include approaches to being a spiritual generalist, partnering with other practitioners (such as chaplaincy and child life), and adapting tools such as FICA in an ageand developmentally-appropriate way to screen for spiritual distress and to evaluate needs. We will also introduce several examples of situations where generalists might encounter challenges surrounding evaluation of spiritual needs of children facing life-threatening illness, along with discussion and suggestions as to how such situations might be safely navigated. Participants should emerge with a basic understanding of spiritual needs of children facing life-threatening illness, a grasp of what it means to be a spiritual generalist, and some basic tools for evaluation.

During the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education Conference 2014, a workshop was held three consecutive times as part of the Pedagogical Speed Dating sessions to introduce experienced college/university faculty and instructional designers to an approach to instructional design that is based on increasing motivation. The purpose of the workshop was to demonstrate the use of Keller’s ARCS Model of Instructional Design for Motivation, specifically how to achieve effective learner/learner, learner/content, and learner/teacher interaction. The discussion focusses on the experiences of typical university and college students.

We will provide background on the prevalence and common types of geriatric trauma seen in U.S. hospitals. Using case-based discussion, we will focus on outcomes and mechanisms of two common geriatric injuries: cervical spine fractures and severe head trauma. Studies demonstrating outcomes of cervical spine fractures will be reviewed. The Injury Severity Score will be used to assess mortality risk in traumatic brain injury, as well. Time for discussion of attendees’ experience in palliative care in geriatric trauma will be provided.

Coming up with an idea that hasn't been tried before is real innovation. In this column, Busken discusses how food developers can come up with truly new ideas. The new innovation in innovation requires that the decision-making process be in place prior to soliciting ideas. Next, food developers must look for the right partner by finding experts in the area they are thinking about exploring. Once identified, the potential partner should be asked to throw out some ideas for new products, with the developer asking why not this or that? A partner's years of experience can then be leveraged to create the innovative product the food developer envisions.

intimacy, palliative care clinicians may experience a particular sense of closeness to their patients, which can increase the chances that boundary crossings may occur. Palliative care clinicians, especially those early in training or lacking specific psychological education, may be particularly susceptible to boundary crossings and violations. Utilizing both psychiatric and palliative care perspectives, this session will address the concept of patient-clinician boundaries. Clinicians will have the opportunity to reflect on potential boundary issues in clinical practice in general and palliative care specifically. We will explore the nature of the patientclinician relationship within the context of the sociological model of role theory. Using the psychological concept of dual relationships, we will distinguish between neutral or therapeutic boundary crossings and harmful boundary violations. We will discuss why some palliative care practitioners and trainees are particularly vulnerable to boundary crossings and violations. Attendees will be provided with a framework for identifying and managing boundary crossings and violations when they occur.
