Despite originating in the tech industry, hackathons have now been adopted in a variety of domains. However, little is known about the status of hackathon literature within educational research. As the number of studies grows, it is essential to develop an understanding of the current state and identify prevalent topics and trends shaping the literature. Toward this goal, this study conducted a bibliometric analysis and scoping review on hackathon research in the field of education. A total of 249 documents written by 1,309 authors and published in 180 unique sources for the period 2014-2022 were identified. Collectively, the dataset amassed 1,312 citations with an average of 6.69 citations per document. The most prevalent subject areas were computer science, social sciences, engineering, medicine, and business. Word frequency analysis showed that "innovation" was the most occurring word, which represents the fundamental objective of hackathon events. The most influential work was the analysis of hackathons as an informal learning platform. Engineering education was the most trending topic while healthcare is an emerging research cluster. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of the hackathon literature and its research landscape in an educational setting.

While University students increasingly participate in work-integrated learning (WIL), their dignity is often violated during WIL. The current literature is limited in so far as it typically focuses on student perspectives within healthcare contexts and does not use the concept of 'dignity'. Instead, this study explored student and supervisor perspectives on student dignity during WIL across healthcare and non-healthcare disciplines. Research questions included: What are: (1) types of student dignity experiences and patterns by groups; (2) factors contributing to experiences; (3) consequences of experiences? Sixty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted using narrative interviewing techniques with 30 supervisors and 46 students from healthcare (medicine, nursing and counselling) and non-healthcare (business, law and education) disciplines. Data were analyzed using framework analysis. Nine common narrative types were identified within 344 stories: verbal abuse, right for learning opportunities, care, inclusion, reasonable expectations, right for appropriate feedback, equality, trust, and right to be informed. Factors contributing to dignity experiences and consequences were often at the individual level (e.g. student/supervisor characteristics). We found some salient differences in perceptions of experiences between students and supervisors, but few differences between healthcare and non-healthcare disciplines. This study extends WIL research based on student perspectives in healthcare, and provides practice and further research guidance to enhance student dignity during WIL.

This article explores the history of the current reemergence of a contemplative orientation in education. While referencing an ancient history, it primarily examines the history of contemporary contemplative education through three significant stages, focusing on the third. The first was arguably initiated by the introduction of Buddhism to the United States through Chinese immigration that started in 1840, and the second began in the late 1960s and early 1970s with the establishment of three significant tertiary institutions that engage contemplative practice and theory. The third, which began in 1995 with the founding of the Centre for Contemplative Mind in Society, is introduced through five developmental influences. Linked with this is the concurrent development and growing intersection of contemplative and transformative education. This contemporary and ancient history traces the continuing presence of the contemplative in education to counter suggestions that contemplative education may be a fleeting trend. Rather, it indicates that contemplative practice, which grounds this approach in education, is an essential aspect of who we are and how we learn.

Across many developed economies, policy foregrounds the role of innovation in stimulating economic recovery and underpinning growth. Higher education is expected to contribute significantly to the innovation agenda. This paper examines one example of innovation in the UK higher education context, namely the creation of a spinout company, and explores its implications for the individual knowledge worker. Focusing on the developing professional identities of those involved, the narrative draws on data from an ethnographic study of the birth of a university spinout company and its eventual launch as an independent company. Utilising the concept of "third space" to frame the spinout experience, it argues that individuals engaging in "innovative" activities of a commercial nature in higher education develop hybrid roles at the margins of their organisations. The extent to which these are tenable over the longer term is debated.

Graphs are an essential part of scientific communication. Complex datasets, of which meta-analyses are textbook examples, benefit the most from visualization. Although a number of graph options for meta-analyses exist, the extent to which these are used was hitherto unclear. A systematic review on graph use in meta-analyses in three disciplines (medicine, psychology, and business) and nine journals was conducted. Interdisciplinary differences, which are mirrored in the respective journals, were revealed, that is, graph use correlates with external factors rather than methodological considerations. There was only limited variation in graph types (with forest plots as the most important representatives), and diagnostic plots were very rare. Although an increase in graph use over time could be observed, it is unlikely that this phenomenon is specific to meta-analyses. There is a gaping discrepancy between available graphic methods and their application in meta-analyses. This may be rooted in a number of factors, namely, (i) insufficient dissemination of new developments, (ii) unsatisfactory implementation in software packages, and (iii) minor attention on graphics in meta-analysis reporting guidelines. Using visualization methods to their full capacity is a further step in using meta-analysis to its full potential.

America's subprime mortgage crisis of 2007 spiraled into a global financial crisis in 2008. For much of the year, attention was riveted on the presidential primaries. A worsening economy made the election somewhat anticlimactic, but everybody rejoiced with the choice of the first "international" President. With stocks tumbling and major firms seeking billion-dollar bailouts, the impact on reference publishers was particularly gloomy, with many reducing staff and limiting new projects. This was evident at conferences like the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting, where publishers and vendors unveiled fewer new products, instead focusing on breathing new, Web 2.0-friendly life into existing ones. The acquisition of Greenwood by the family-owned ABC-CLIO caught many by surprise. SAGE's acquisition of CQ Press, on the other hand, was less surprising, since much of the publishers' content complements rather than competes. On the e-reference front, 2008 saw a proliferation of products in less-treated categories, including much-needed ventures into popular culture via Greenwood's outstanding--and Dartmouth Medal-winning--Pop Culture Universe and the still--growing field of women's studies via Adam Matthews Digital's amazingly legible microfilm collection, Perdita Manuscripts 1500-1700. Reflecting the astonishing diversity of the subjects covered in last year's reference gems, the list presented in this article is organized by subject to help facilitate collection development practices. Similarly, because consideration of formats is no longer an afterthought but an integral part of librarianship, information about alternative formats is made more prominent throughout.

Research on markets and marketing of some non-timber forest products (NTFPs) was carried out in selected locations of Osun State. The NTFPs considered are chewing sticks such as "Massularia acuminata" and bush meat like "Thryonomys swinderianus", representing both the flora and fauna aspects of NTFPs, respectively. Five Local Government Areas were randomly selected, namely; Odo-otin, Boripe, Iwo, Irewole and Atakunmosa for the research purpose. A total of 300 questionnaires were administered, 150 questionnaires for each of the NTFPs. Each NTFPs was further subdivided to production, marketing and usage or consumption with 50 questionnaires for each unit. It was gathered from the result that "M. acuminata" tops the list of the well favoured chewing sticks. Other types of chewing sticks that rank high include fagara ("Zanthophylum zanthoxonoides") and Ira ("Rauwolfia vomitora"). Bush meat is also cherished by people most especially in urban centres where it is regarded as a delicacy. Despite the preference of bush meat, the rate of consumption is still low relative to other animal protein sources. Apart from these two NTFPs, several others of economic, nutritional and medicinal importance exist. A list of some of them is made with their uses. NTFPs are grossly affected by seasonal changes and this in turns affect their availability and prices. In all, considering NTFPs in the light of economic gain alone will be parochial even though analysis for the marketing of the two NTFPs shows that they are viable business ventures. The values should extend beyond the economic gain to other values which are indispensable to the existence of man. A major but neglected aspect is the medicinal aspect of NTFPs. (Contains 6 tables.)

Background and Objectives: Previous studies have shown that improving quality management in the central sterile supply department (CSSD) is an effective measure to control and decrease hospital-acquired infections. This study aimed to establish nursing-sensitive quality indicators for CSSD nursing in China. Methods: We drafted nursingsensitive quality indicators on the basis of the Structure-Process-Outcome model, and then conducted 2 rounds of consultation with experts using a modified Delphi method to determine the indicators and scientific methods of measurement. Results: We identified five CSSD nursing-sensitive quality indicators. Recovery rates of the 2 rounds of valid questionnaires were 100%. Expert authority coefficients were 0.810 and 0.902, respectively. Kendall's coefficients of concordance were 0.168 and 0.210, respectively (P< .05). Conclusion: Evidence-based nursing-sensitive quality indicators for the CSSD were established. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: As primary care is an important infrastructure for the entire health system, the employment structure choices of family physicians—whether to work in a managed care organization or be self-employed, can impact all effectiveness parameters of healthcare: quality, access, health equity, patients' experiences, and cost-effectiveness. The aim of this study is to assess the push and pull factors influencing family physicians' employment choices. Methods: This study employed a qualitative approach to explore the experiences of family physicians (FPs) who choose to work a self-employment practice. We conducted semi-structured interviews with twenty-seven self-employed FPs in Israel, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. The interviews were conducted via Zoom, recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis followed thematic analysis framework. The analysis yielded 10 themes, which were organized into two categories: pull and push factors. Results: Pull factors, i.e., factors that attract family physicians to become self-employed, included professional self-fulfillment, higher income, professional and business autonomy, working with secretaries according to one's personal choice, designing the space of the clinic, and flexibility in working hours. Push factors, i.e., factors that demotivated family physicians to work under managed care and pushed them to choose self-employment included low control over the work environment, workload, decreased professional and organizational autonomy, managerial pressures on quality measures, engagement in marketing activities, and tensions with non-medical staff in the Health Maintenance Organization. Conclusions: There are obvious implications of this work for Health Maintenance Organizations' policy makers. Balancing managerial pressure and tensions between family physicians and non-medical administration and ensuring suitable working conditions increased physicians' control over the work environment, and professional autonomy may decrease push factors and retain family physicians as Health Maintenance Organization-employed. Understanding pull factors may help to develop a strategy for maximizing cooperation with self-employed family physicians and reinforce physicians' linkage to the healthcare system's treatment objectives. Most healthcare professionals agree on the "why" behind encouraging administrators to embrace Lifestyle Medicine as a means of treating chronic conditions and improving health. It is the "how" that often evades us. How do we build our business case to justify the sustained commitment to this approach to care? Each entity has unique obstacles and opportunities inherent in their business model and organizational culture. Attempts to position Lifestyle Medicine as a fundamental means for reshaping healthcare sometimes fall flat despite the value of the requests. Advance preparation including strategic planning and a well-designed approach can make the difference by addressing barriers and opening doors. Each business case will be unique, but there are critical elements that should be common to every strategic plan. We can identify foundational tactics to substantiate the need for integration of Lifestyle Medicine as a critical part of healthcare institutions and their financial plans. Given the momentum in Lifestyle Medicine as a discipline, recommendations can be based on successful practices in the development of business cases, program pilots, sustained budgets and outcomes that justify expansion. This study assessed direct-acting oral anticoagulant (DOAC) switching/discontinuation patterns in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) in 2019, by quarter (Q1–Q4), and associated socioeconomic risk factors. Adults with NVAF initiating stable DOAC treatment (July 2018–December 2018) were selected from Symphony Health Solutions’ Patient Transactional Datasets (April 2017–January 2021). Switching/discontinuation rates were reported in 2019 Q1–Q4, separately. Non-medical switching/discontinuation (NMSD) was defined as the difference between switching/discontinuation rates in Q1 and mean rates across Q2–Q4. The associations of socioeconomic factors with switching/discontinuation were assessed. Of 46,793 patients (78.7% ≥ 65 years; 52.6% male; 7.7% Black), 18.0% switched/discontinued their initial DOAC in Q1 vs. 8.8% on average in Q2–Q4, corresponding to an NMSD of 9.2%. During the quarter following the switch/discontinuation, more patients who switched/discontinued in Q1 remained untreated (Q1: 77.0%; Q2: 74.3%; Q3: 71.2%) and fewer reinitiated initial DOAC (Q1: 17.6%; Q2: 20.8%; Q3: 24.0%). Factors associated with the risk of switching/discontinuation in Q1 were race, age, gender, insurance type, and household income (all p < 0.05). More patients with NVAF switched/discontinued DOACs in Q1 vs. Q2–Q4, and more of them tended to remain untreated relative to those who switched/discontinued later in the year, suggesting a potential long-term impact of NMSD. Findings on factors associated with switching/discontinuation highlight potential socioeconomic discrepancies in treatment continuity.

Healthcare is a huge business sector in many countries, focusing on the social function of delivering quality health when people develop illness. The system is essentially financed by public funds based on the solidarity principle. With a large financial outlay, the sector must use economic evaluation methods to achieve better efficiency. The objective of our study was to evaluate and to understand how health economics is used today, taking Belgium as an example of a high-income country. The evaluation started with a historical view of healthcare development and ended with potential projections for its future. A literature review focused on country-specific evaluation reports to identify the health economic methods used, with a search for potential gaps. The first results indicated that Belgium in 2021 devoted 11% of its GDP, 17% of its total tax revenue, and 30% of the national Social Security Fund to health-related activities, totalizing EUR 55.5 billion spending. The main health economic method used was a cost-effectiveness analysis linked to budget impact, assigning reimbursable monetary values to new products becoming available. However, these evaluation methods only impacted at most 20% of the money circulating in healthcare. The remaining 80% was subject to financial regulations (70%) and budgeting (10%), which could use many other techniques of an economic analysis. The evaluation indicated two potentially important changes in health economic use in Belgium. One was an increased focus on budgeting with plans, time frames, and quantified treatment objectives on specific disease problems. Economic models with simulations are very supportive in those settings. The other was the application of constrained optimization methods, which may become the new standard of practice when switching from fee-for-service to pay-per-performance as promoted by value-based healthcare and value-based health management. This economic refocusing to a more constrained approach may help to keep the healthcare system sustainable and affordable in the face of the many future challenges including ageing, climate change, migration, pandemics, logistical limitations, and financial instability.

The purpose of this study is to identify potential determinants of the intention to use mobile telemedicine applications. We gathered a total of 187 responses from smartphone users who expressed interest in utilizing Halodoc mobile telemedicine application. This study analyzed the acquired data using PLS-SEM and employed Importance-Performance Mapping (IPMA) to propose possible managerial enhancements for developers of mobile telemedicine applications. Performance expectancy and facilitating conditions have a substantial impact on users' attitude toward mobile telemedicine applications, according to the findings of the study. Usage intention is not directly influenced by performance expectancy or facilitating conditions. While effort expectancy has no effect on attitude, it has a substantial impact on usage intention. The impact of social influence on attitude and behavioral intention is predominantly positive. Data privacy, in contrast to IT identity, does not have a positive impact on usage intention. In general, a favorable attitude toward the application positively influences the user's intent to use mobile telemedicine applications.

Background: The purpose of this paper is to address how to handle uncertainty when performing an economic valuation of a medical innovation R&D project in orphan diseases from the perspective of the investor. Methods: We describe the specific uncertainty related to cash flows and the cost of capital for innovation in orphan diseases. The uncertainty in cash flows relates to sales, manufacturing and R&D costs, and probabilities of failure for each phase in the clinical trial program. We consider different net present values (NPVs) and higher standard deviations for orphan drugs compared to non-orphan drugs. Results: Numerical case base examples showed the differences in trade-off by an investor for R&D projects with differences in NPV and level of uncertainty. The investor will transfer the additional uncertainty in cash flows in a higher cost of capital. An alternative approach is the application of an “acceptability curve” based on a probabilistic sensitivity analysis, which displays the cumulative probabilities at a range of different values for the NPV. Finally, we consider uncertainty in the cost of capital itself by applying the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Conclusions: In this paper, we described various types of uncertainty and explored various approaches to how to handle uncertainty in the economic valuation of medical innovation in orphan diseases. The bridging of health economics with economic valuation theory in the healthcare market is to our knowledge a novel approach for the valuation of medical innovation by investors.

Economic evaluations are used to compare the costs and consequences of healthcare interventions, including those for musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders, which are very common and a major source of morbidity and absence from work. Reimbursement decisions for interventions for MSK disorders by decision-makers rely on the findings of economic evaluations, the design and results of which depend largely on the perspective adopted. Despite methodological advancements in economic evaluations, there are no clear guidelines on the perspective to adopt. This paper explores the adoption of a societal perspective in economic evaluations of MSK disorders. Within health economics evaluations, the most commonly used perspectives include the payer perspective, the healthcare perspective, and the societal perspective. To facilitate optimal resource allocation decisions in order to reduce the significant economic burden of MSK disorders and improve the health outcomes of individuals with these disorders, all costs and benefits associated with interventions for them should be included. Thus, the societal perspective is arguably a preferable option to the others for economic evaluations of interventions for MSK disorders.

Background: Considering regulatory, supervision, and control health policy, an innovative knowledge management model is proposed for the Colombian health system, which is recognized as a complex system. Methods: A model is constructed through a comparative analysis of various theoretical and conceptual frameworks, and an original methodology is proposed based on an analysis of the macroprocesses of the Supervision and Control System (SSC) of the Colombian General Social Security System in Health (SGSSS). After formulating hypotheses and conceptual references, information errors are determined within the different macroprocesses of the SGSSS, including those of governance and the SSC. Results: The risks of generating duplicate, wrong, hidden, or non-existent information arise when the associated regulations need more specificity to be applied in all cases, thus leading to the risk of different interpretations by some actors. In this way, it is possible to hinder the generation of unified information, as there is no clarity as to who is responsible for the generation or creation of certain data. Conclusions: The proposed model is characterized by its flexibility and adaptability, integrating several processes that can be executed simultaneously or cyclically (depending on the system’s needs) and allowing for the generation and feedback of knowledge at different stages, with some processes simultaneously executed to complement each other.

Patient experience and satisfaction are the keystones in evaluating the effectiveness of clinical care in musculoskeletal medicine. Although all orthopedic settings work on the same principles of providing safe and quality health care, community hospitals represent a unique environment. There may be key differences with regard to patient experience between these settings. Accessibility to care, choices of provider, personalized care, availability of and access to resources, cultural and social variances, and waiting times are a few of the many elements that may impact patient experience and satisfaction. This narrative review aims to explore the core differences in these settings and how they can reflect on patient experience and satisfaction.

National pricing and reimbursement agencies face growing challenges with complex health technologies, prompting European policy advancements. Beneluxa is a cross-country collaboration involving Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, Austria, and Ireland that aims to address sustainable access to medicines. In view of the soon-to-be-implemented EU HTA Regulation, insights and experiences from stakeholders with Beneluxa cross-country collaboration could provide possible transferable learnings. Therefore, this research aims to (i) identify the opportunities and challenges faced by Beneluxa, (ii) gather insights from stakeholders, namely (possible) applicants and policymakers, within and beyond Beneluxa on the initiative and broader cross-country collaboration principles, and (iii) transfer these insights into learnings and recommendations in anticipation of the full implementation of the new HTA Regulation. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry and European HTA/policy stakeholders. The principal challenges discussed by stakeholders encompass hesitancy from the industry toward Beneluxa assessments, which were attributed to procedural and timeline uncertainties, legislative framework ambiguity, and challenges in terms of industry’s internal organization. Another challenge highlighted is the resource-intensive nature of the procedure due to diverse approaches among member states. In addition, industry stakeholders mentioned limited communication and procedural complexity. Despite challenges, both stakeholder groups recognized important opportunities for cross-country collaboration. Transferable insights for future cross-country collaboration include transparent communication, clear legislative embedding, internal industry restructuring to facilitate joint HTAs, and member state support for conducting collaborative assessments. The study underscores diverging views among stakeholders on cross-country collaboration’s potential to support HTA and the market access of complex health technologies. While acknowledging benefits, there still are challenges, including industry hesitancy, emphasizing the need for transparent communication and clear guidance in the evolving EU HTA landscape.

Alopecia is an undesirable side effect of cancer chemotherapy. The mitigation of alopecia is a desirable adjunct treatment for patients with cancer. FDA-cleared scalp cooling (SC) devices have been successfully used to prevent or reduce chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA). This paper provides an understanding of the implementation and value of the new Insurance-Based Billing Model used in the USA for SC and its benefits compared with the original self-pay model. This improved compensation change will result in all patients in need, including underserved and disadvantaged populations, receiving equitable healthcare by allowing access to this valuable supportive care technology.
