Body armor is tested for efficacy using the NIJ’s clay standard. This standard is based on a 44 mm upper limit of back face deformation into the clay to prevent severe cases of behind armor blunt trauma (BABT). The NIJ clay standard has never been directly correlated with human injury, and it is previously unknown how 44 mm into clay translates to the response of a human torso. This study developed a method for reproducing BABT in a laboratory setting, and performed matched pair testing on the ballistics clay and a cadaveric specimen. Tests at a low, non-injurious speed and a high, injurious speed were performed at the NIJ specified clay temperature, along with two tests at a lower temperature representing exposure to a room temperature setting. It was found that for both speeds the displacement into the human thorax was greater than the displacement into the clay. The greatest displacement into the clay was only 5mm above the standard’s limit, and the same speed into the human model caused failure of the ribcage. Lowering the clay temperature by two degrees Celsius resulted in a passing clay displacement for the extremely injurious high speed test. This experimentation is sufficient in showing that the NIJ standard may not be valid for preventing serious BABT injuries in the wearers of body armor. Further testing is required to correlate clay displacements with human injury risk.

The use of large gauge (G) spinal anesthesia needles can increase complications due to buckling. The purpose of this study was to quantify the behavior of spinal needles in buckling using a repeatable laboratory model. A spinal anesthesia procedure and buckling complication was reproduced in vitro using a custom test fixture designed to match the boundary conditions of needle insertion as performed by an anesthesiologist and a uniaxial servohydraulic material testing machine (MTS, Eden Prairie, MN). Buckling tests were performed with 22 G Whitacre (Medline Industries, Inc., Northfield IL), SPROTTE® (Pajunk, Norcross, GA), and Gertie Marx (International Medical Development, Huntsville, UT) needles (n = 30) in a ballistics gelatin tissue surrogate (Clear Ballistics, Fort Smith, AR). In analyzing axial force results, critical buckling load results were 27.65 ± 0.92 N, signifying that needle fragility is not why buckling is challenging to detect. Force feedback during needle insertion increased linearly due to frictional forces from the tissue surrogate on the needle. The differential between the resultant insertion force and the critical buckling force is more important to the detection of needle buckling than the critical buckling force alone. A very small difference in these two forces could feel like expected resistance increase as the needle is further inserted into the multiple tissue layers. Comparison of the differential between the resultant insertion force and the critical buckling force should be considered when choosing a needle to best detect and prevent a buckling complication.

An experimental study and hydrocode simulation was conducted to investigate the correlation between hardness of steel and the ballistic performance of steel-encapsulated SiC armour modules against long rod impact. The armour module design composed of a SiC tile in confinement within 10 mm backing and 5 mm cover plates, which were made of AISI 4340 steel with varying hardnesses between HRC 30 to 50. The armour modules were subjected to normal impact by conical tungsten alloy long rods of 8.3 mm diameter and 115 mm length, at a nominal striking velocity of 1.25 km/s. A witness block of AISI 4340 steel was placed behind the armour module to capture the residual projectile. Failure analysis of the armour modules and the measurement of residual penetration in the witness blocks were applied to characterize ballistic performance of the ceramic armour modules. The different modes of failure of the backing plate and its influence on ballistic performance of the module were verified through visual inspection of test modules and analysis of high speed videos. Hydrocode simulation of the experiments using LS-DYNA was carried out to model the penetration and failure processes that occurred in the armour modules. The Johnson Cook model was applied in simulation of the steel confinement, accounting for the influence of hardness on JC model parameters. Results showed that increasing hardness of the backing enhanced the performance of the module while cover plate hardness had no influence within the range of hardnesses tested. This study paves the way for future studies to further understand the influence of steel hardness on the ballistics performance of steel-encapsulated silicon carbide (SiC) armour modules.

This research conducts 300 small-scale ammunition experiments using moderate bullet speeds and a variety of bullet configurations in order to understand the relationship between penetration behavior and bullet shape. To maximize the survivability of soldiers and reduce their vulnerability and ballistics wounds, it is very important to understand the penetration physics of bullets. Inside human bodies, tumbling and traveling trajectories are important factors to consider when analyzing human injuries due to ballistics. Therefore, many kinds of bullets and armor have been proposed to minimize or maximize human damage. In this study, to support the development of bullets, 10 bullets with different head angle shapes and different diameters were manufactured and fired at speeds less than 200 m/s towards transparent gelatin blocks, and the damage mechanisms, i.e., temporary cavities and permanent cavities, were studied by taking penetration images using a high speed camera. It was found that the tumbling and rotations of bullets are influenced by kinetic energies and the shapes of bullets, and several empirical relationships are derived. The results suggest that the shapes and the diameters are crucial factors for ballistics wounds.

Amongst hundreds of different projectiles for air guns available on the market, hollow-point air gun pellets are of special interest. These pellets are characterized by a tip or a hollowed-out shape in their tip which, when fired, makes the projectiles expand to an increased diameter upon entering the target medium. This results in an increase in release of energy which, in turn, has the potential to cause more serious injuries than non-hollow-point projectiles. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, reliable data on the terminal ballistic features of hollow-point air gun projectiles compared to standard diabolo pellets have not yet been published in the forensic literature. The terminal ballistic performance (energy-dependent expansion and penetration) of four different types of .177 caliber hollow-point pellets discharged at kinetic energy levels from approximately 3 J up to 30 J into water, ordnance gelatin, and ordnance gelatin covered with natural chamois as a skin simulant was the subject of this investigation. Energy-dependent expansion of the tested hollow-point pellets was observed after being shot into all investigated target media. While some hollow-point pellets require a minimum kinetic energy of approximately 10 J for sufficient expansion, there are also hollow-point pellets which expand at kinetic energy levels of less than 5 J. The ratio of expansion (RE, calculated by the cross-sectional area (A) after impact divided by the cross-sectional area (A 0) of the undeformed pellet) of hollow-point air gun pellets reached values up of to 2.2. The extent of expansion relates to the kinetic energy of the projectile with a peak for pellet expansion at the 15 to 20 J range. To conclude, this work demonstrates that the hollow-point principle, i.e., the design-related enlargement of the projectiles’ frontal area upon impact into a medium, does work in air guns as claimed by the manufacturers.

Energy absorption behavior of flexible armour materials treated with Shear Thickening Fluids (STF) was studied. Five different structures were prepared with varying thread densities of p-aramid yarns, followed by treatment with 60% w/w STF. In untreated condition, plain woven fabrics show highest impact resistance in low velocity impacts, followed by 3/1 twill, 2/2 twill, 5-end satin and 2/2 matt weaves. Ballistic impact mitigation behavior improves with increase in thread density in case of plain woven fabrics. Addition of STF significantly improves both low and high velocity impact behavior of the panels. Low velocity behavior of STF treated fabrics have been published previously [12]. This paper brings together both low and high velocity impact behavior of various geometries of fabrics. It was seen that both primary and secondary yarns are engaged during impact which improves impact mitigation behavior of STF treated fabrics. However, fabrics get jammed at thread densities beyond 32×32 per inch. As was observed earlier in low velocity impact conditions, addition of STF did not enhance performance of fabrics with high thread density in high velocity impact as well.

One of the primary design considerations of earth-orbiting spacecraft is the mitigation of the damage that might occur from an on-orbit MMOD impact. Traditional damage-resistant design consists of a ‘bumper’ that is placed a small distance away from a spacecraft component or from the wall of the element in which it is housed. The performance of such a multi-wall structural element is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation (BLE), which defines the threshold particle size that results in a failure of the spacecraft element. BLEs are also key components of any micro-meteoroid/orbital debris (MMOD) risk assessment calculations. However, these assessments often call for BLEs to predict impact response for projectiles made of materials not used in the development of those BLEs. The question naturally arises regarding how close are the predictions of such BLEs when used in impact scenarios involving projectiles made of materials not necessarily considered in their development. In an effort to address this issue, a study was performed with the objective of assessing the validity of the NNO BLE for non-aluminum particles. Particle materials considered included steel, copper, and Al 2 O 3 (i.e. particles that are made of materials that are more dense than aluminum). Comparisons are made between actual test results involving these non-aluminum projectiles and the predictions of the NNO BLE. In nearly all cases, the NNO BLE was found not to work very well in the predicting failure / no failure response of these non-aluminum projectiles. A new NNO-type BLE is then developed that can be used to more reliably predict the response of dual-wall systems under the hypervelocity impact of such “heavier” non-aluminum projectiles.

The static response of ballistic panels and also its resistance to blast and ballistic impact is investigated in the framework of this study. By connecting individual ballistic panels together, the protective barrier can be constructed. The protective barrier can be featured as a system with high mobility and versatility that is achieved by linking basic interlocking plate elements together. The resulting protective barrier can be shaped according to many possible scenarios in a wall with various possible opening angles and a small post with the tetragonal base or a larger post with the hexagonal ground plan. The material solution of the protective barrier benefits from the application of ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced cement-based composites (UHPFRCC), which meets the requirements for enhanced resistance against extreme loads such as blast or impact. Besides, by using UHPFRCC, thin and slender design can be adopted, which is advantageous in many ways. Slender design results in a lower weight, allowing for easy manipulation and replacement. To verify the behavior of the panels, the proposed barrier was subjected to various loadings at different strain rates. The experimental campaign demonstrated that the protective barrier has a reasonable load-bearing capacity and also sufficient resistance against projectile impact and blast effects.

Effective structural design to resist ballistic effects such as small arms or fragmenting weapons has been a goal since weapons were developed. Approaches currently in use for ballistic design are predominantly deterministic and allow designers to decide what wall thickness should be used to stop a prescribed projectile impacting at a predefined velocity. The research presented in this paper provides a framework for conducting reliability analysis of structures subjected to bullet and fragment demands. Thus, pseudo-fragility curves are developed for the limit states related to spall and perforation of wall panels, residual velocities of bullets and fragments, and injury to personnel. The pseudo-fragility analysis provides engineers and owners with a tool to quickly assess the reliability of a wall system subjected to high velocity, low mass projectiles. The paper deals with a possibility of the local repairing of damaged composite armours. The proposed repairs can be performed directly in the field, allowing thus to recover the full ballistic protection in a short time. Several solutions (temporary or permanent) were designed and tested both experimentally and using numerical simulations. Overlapping of the damaged area with patch from armour steel after filling the hole with ceramic balls showed to be optimal as a temporary repair. The calculation clearly showed that the depth of penetration of the projectile is reduced in all cases of designed permanent repairs in comparison to original armour configuration. The experiments confirmed supposed enhancing of ballistic resistance, but only some repair techniques met the requirements of multi-hit testing. However, the reason of failure after multi-hit could be clearly explained with the help of used numerical simulations.

The fundamental components of any meteoroid/orbital debris (MOD) risk assessment calculation are environment models, damage response predictor equations, and failure criteria. In the case of a spacecraft operating in low earth orbit, the response predictor equation typically takes the form of a ballistic limit equation (BLE) that defines the threshold particle sizes that cause failure of a spacecraft wall or component. Spacecraft risk assessments often call for BLEs for spacecraft components that do not exist. In such cases, it is a common procedure to use an existing BLE after first equivalencing the actual materials and/or wall thicknesses to the materials that were used in the development of the existing BLE. The question naturally arises regarding how close are the predictions of such an ‘adapted BLE’ to the response characteristics of the actual materials/wall configurations under high speed projectile impacts. This paper presents the results of a study that compared the predictions of a commonly used BLE when adapted to the Soyuz OM wall configuration against those of a new BLE that was developed specifically for that Soyuz wall configuration. It was found that the critical projectile diameters predicted by the new Soyuz OM wall BLE can exceed those predicted by the adapted use of the existing BLE by as much as 50% of the existing BLE values. Thus, using the adapted version of the existing BLE in this particular case would contribute to a more conservative value of assessed risk. If the same trends were to hold true for other spacecraft wall configurations, then it is also possible that using existing BLEs, even after they have been adjusted for differences in materials, etc., may result in predictions of smaller critical diameters (i.e., increased assessed risk) than would using BLEs purposely developed for actual spacecraft configurations of interest.

The current study aims to investigate the effectiveness of two different designs of helmet interior cushion, (Helmet 1: strap-netting; Helmet 2: Oregon Aero foam-padding), and the effect of the impact directions on the helmeted head during ballistic impact. Series of ballistic impact simulations (frontal, lateral, rear, and top) of a full-metal-jacketed bullet were performed on a validated finite element head model equipped with the two helmets, to assess the severity of head injuries sustained in ballistic impacts using both head kinematics and biomechanical metrics. Benchmarking with experimental ventricular and intracranial pressures showed that there is good agreement between the simulations and experiments. In terms of extracranial injuries, top impact had the highest skull stress, still without fracturing the skull. In regard to intracranial injuries, both the lateral and rear impacts generally gave the highest principal strains as well as highest shear strains, which exceed the injury thresholds. Off-cushion impacts were found to be at higher risk of intracranial injuries. The study also showed that the Oregon Aero foam pads helped to reduce impact forces. It also suggested that more padding inserts of smaller size may offer better protection. This provides some insights on future's helmet design against ballistic threats.

In this study, the mechanical load on a bullet-shaped indenter when impacted by a single-ply Kevlar fabric was experimentally investigated using a reverse ballistics method at both quasi-static and dynamic rates. Different indenter geometries, namely the 9-mm Luger, .223 Remington, and .308 Winchester bullet geometries, were used. The penetration load of the stationary indenter was measured using a force transducer located behind the indenter, and the penetration load was then plotted against the impact velocity of the fabric sample. Different mechanisms of penetration were observed at different impact velocities. Penetration mechanisms were also found to be highly dependent on projectile nose geometry. A modified method to obtain an approximate ballistic limit based on the impact loads was used to compare the efficacy of different geometry types.

Reasonable simulation of the bench blasting has great significance on designing of rock blasting, and the proper consideration of blasting fragmentation size has strong influence on the simulation accuracy. This paper presents a new approach based on the three dimension Distinct Element Code (3DEC) method (Itasca Consulting Group, Inc. 2003) to model the dynamic cracking and casting process of bench blasting with reasonable consideration of blasting fragmentation size. Firstly, an equivalent blasting load consisting of the stress wave pressure and the detonation gas pressure was introduced into the 3DEC model, and it was applied on the outer boundary of blast-induced crushed zone to guarantee the simulation efficiency. Then, the whole numerical model was divided into discrete blocks by several sets of artificial joints to enable the rock to crack, fragment and cast, and at last form a muck-pile, and the artificial joints were assigned with the same mechanical parameters to rock mass itself to avoid the impact of them on stress wave propagation. Different from general discrete schemes which discretize the model with uniform blocks or random balls, the discrete size adopted in this paper gradually increases with distance from the blast source according to the Harries' model (Harries, 1973). At last, the proposed method was examined and verified by simulation of a blasting crater comparing to the field experiment, and then applied to explore the casting process of bench blasting. The simulated muck-pile profile agrees well with the result predicted by the traditional ballistics theory. The simulation also indicates that the casting distance of bench blasting increases with the bench height ( H) , but decreases with the burden distance ( W) , while the height of muck-pile increases with both the W and H . So the muck-pile profile of bench blasting is more sensitive to the W than H after consideration of rock fragmentation size, and the optimization of blasting designs can be significantly enhanced by utilizing the full capabilities of this approach.

The mechanisms of progressive penetration for two ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced laminates have been investigated. One used an UHMWPE fiber reinforcement while the other utilized molecularly aligned tape. Both materials had similar out of plane compressive strengths, but the fiber system had a 40% higher in plane tensile strength than the tape. Laminated, 6 mm thick plates with a [0°/90°] ply architecture were impacted by a 12.7 mm diameter sphere under conditions that either allowed out of plane plate deflection or eliminated this deflection by rear support of the target. The depth of penetration and the ballistic limit in the rear-supported tests were identical for the two materials, and proceeded by progressive ply failure. However, tests in the edge clamped condition resulted in a substantially higher penetration resistance, especially for the higher tensile strength fiber-reinforced material. Edge clamped testing of a bilayer target, where the front third was composed of the tape material and the remainder comprised fiber reinforced laminate, had the same ballistic limit as a target composed of only the higher ply tensile strength fiber reinforced material. Penetration in both test support conditions was discovered to occur by tensile ply rupture under the projectile, consistent with a recently proposed mechanism for converting out of plane compression to in plane ply tension. Lateral displacement of plies was also observed near the sides of impact craters in both materials, indicating the existence of a second mechanism impeding penetration of the spherical shaped projectile.

Purpose: Ferromagnetic bullets can move in air or gelatin in magnetic resonance (MR) units. According to our experience, ferromagnetic bullets do not always present consistent movement. We examined factors affecting ferromagnetic projectile movement in a 1.5T and a 3T MR unit, focusing in this study on the steel-jacketed Swiss ordnance ammunition 7.5mm GP11 Suisse. Methods: Five 7.5mm GP11 Suisse bullets were embedded horizontally and vertically in 10% ordnance gelatin phantoms. Before and after exposing the bullets to 1.5T (Siemens) and 3T (Philips) MR units each bullet's position was documented by a CT scan. In a second phase, the magnetic polarization of the bullets in relation to the MR units was measured by a dry magnetic portable compass (Suunto). Results: Our results showed that the displacement of the bullets increased when subjected to a stronger magnetic field (max. Movement 1.5T: 24.4mm vs. 3T: 101.5mm) and that the position, i.e. orientation of the bullet toward the gantry, strongly influenced its mobility (horizontally embedded projectiles showed poor movement, vertically placed ones strong movement). One of the bullets presented a 180° rotation in the 3T MR unit. Magnetization and changing of the polarization of these ferromagnetic bullets is possible when subjected to MR units. Conclusion: In conclusion, the location of a bullet, and its orientation toward the gantry must be taken into account when assessing the risk of performing an MR examination on a gunshot victim in clinical and in forensic cases.

Structure vibration is known to influence the firing accuracy of a machine gun system. Studying the dynamic characteristics of the machine gun system and reducing its vibration response are crucial. Eigenfrequency optimization based on topology is an emerging vibration suppression technique that reduces structural vibration and stabilizes a machine gun system. This paper presents an effective and efficient method that accomplishes these tasks. The objective function is the frequency of the main vibration mode confirmed by modal and transient dynamic analyses. The frequency is maximized by subjecting topology optimization to mass constraints. Based on topology optimization results, the revised model addresses all structural and manufacturability concerns. Dynamic analysis, exterior ballistics calculation, and experimental test are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Results show that muzzle vibration and structure deformation are reduced and firing accuracy is remarkably improved.

Determination of ballistic performance of an armor solution is a complicated task and evolved significantly with the application of finite element methods (FEM) in this research field. The traditional armor design studies performed with FEM requires sophisticated procedures and intensive computational effort, therefore simpler and accurate numerical approaches are always worthwhile to decrease armor development time. This study aims to apply a hybrid method using FEM simulation and artificial neural network (ANN) analysis to approximate ballistic limit thickness for armor steels. To achieve this objective, a predictive model based on the artificial neural networks is developed to determine ballistic resistance of high hardness armor steels against 7.62 mm armor piercing ammunition. In this methodology, the FEM simulations are used to create training cases for Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) three layer networks. In order to validate FE simulation methodology, ballistic shot tests on 20 mm thickness target were performed according to standard Stanag 4569. Afterwards, the successfully trained ANN(s) is used to predict the ballistic limit thickness of 500 HB high hardness steel armor. Results show that even with limited number of data, FEM-ANN approach can be used to predict ballistic penetration depth with adequate accuracy. Copyright (C) 2015, China Ordnance Society. The effect of matrix shear strength on the ballistic response of simply-supported carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) beams was explored for a flat-ended projectile. To gain insight into the deformation and failure mechanisms, the following additional tests were performed on CFRP beams: (i) quasi-static indentation tests with rigid back support and, (ii) quasi-static cropping tests. In all 3 types of tests, CFRP [0°/90°] cross-ply laminates were tested in six states of cure, such that the matrix shear strength ranges from 0.1 MPa to 100 MPa. In the quasi-static cropping tests, the composite beams failed by shear plugging (involving transverse matrix cracks, ply delamination, and fibre fracture). In contrast, indirect tension (by ply tensile failure in the fibre direction) occurred in the back-supported quasi-static indentation tests. In the ballistic tests, the CFRP beams of high matrix shear strength (30 MPa–100 MPa) failed by a shear plugging mode. When the matrix shear strength was less than 30 MPa, the failure mode and the penetration velocity doubled and occurred by indirect tension. The optimal shear strength to give adequate static and ballistic strength is on the order of 20 MPa.

Mesoscale models have been successfully used to simulate impact on fabrics and composites at ordnance velocities. There are many advantages of the mesoscale models: 1) individual components of the model (e.g. yarns) can be easily tested to check if they capture the important physics of the problem, 2) the components of the model often have simple material models (e.g. a yarn is often linear elastic up to failure), and 3) a multi-tier validation with material and ballistics tests at meso- and macroscale levels can be performed. The authors have successfully developed mesoscale models for a glass fiber reinforced composite (S-2 glass fiber with epoxy resin) that were validated by unconventional composite tests (e.g., torsion, out-of-plane delamination). In this paper the models are exercised at impact velocities ranging from 2 to 5 km/s. The original material models have simple constitutive laws (linear-elastic and elasto-plastic) that, in principle, have limited validity for hypervelocity impact. Therefore, modifications are made to better model the high-rate behavior of the epoxy resin matrix. The simulation results capture complicated damage mechanisms that might provide insight into future experimental data.

There are elaborated some dependences which make it possible to compute some materials resistant to hits with the energy greater than in so far tests of the bullets of 7,62 mm caliber. The tests of being resistant to hit have been carried out with the 10GHMBA steel which has been overshot by the bullets of 12.7 mm. In order to do that the single cover plates with changeable thickness have been placed in the ballistic pendulum. On the basis of the obtained measurements like speed before and behind the specimen, the pendulum deflection angle, the force passed to the dynamometer sleeve, it is possible to define the maximum thickness of the penetrated material. The comparison with the bullets proof of various materials like steel with composites, ceramics or the mathematical models verification by an experiment can be done with direct comparison of some chosen measured parameters. For example the bullet speed behind the specimen has to be related to its thickness similarly to some other parameters which are possible to be measured. All the quantities like the bullet speed behind the specimen are the functions of the specimen thickness for the defined type of bullet. The penetration process of the material is a kind of transformation of the energy carried by the bullet into the energy of the specimen deformation, the emitted warm or into the pendulum work. In order to compare the bullet proof with various materials or the mathematical models with experiment there is proposed getting in some non-dimensional factors which define the change of the kinetic energy or the system impulse

Kinetic energy non-lethal projectiles are used to impart sufficient effect onto a person in order to deter uncivil or hazardous behavior with a low probability of permanent injury. Since their first use, real cases indicate that the injuries inflicted by such projectiles may be irreversible and sometimes lead to death, especially for the head impacts. Given the high velocities and the low masses involved in such impacts, the assessment approaches proposed in automotive crash tests and sports may not be appropriate. Therefore, there is a need of a specific approach to assess the lethality of these projectiles. In this framework, some recent research data referred in this article as “force wall approach” suggest the use of three lesional thresholds (unconsciousness, meningeal damages and bone damages) that depend on the intracranial pressure. Three corresponding critical impact forces are determined for a reference projectile. Based on the principle that equal rigid wall maximal impact forces will produce equal damage on the head, these limits can be determined for any other projectile. In order to validate the consistence of this innovative method, it is necessary to compare the results with other existing assessment methods. This paper proposes a comparison between the “force wall approach” and two different head models. The first one is a numerical model (Strasbourg University Finite Element Head Model-SUFEHM) from Strasbourg University; the second one is a mechanical surrogate (Ballistics Load Sensing Headform-BLSH) from Biokinetics.

Yarn shooting experiments were conducted to determine the ballistically-relevant, Young’s modulus and tensile strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber. Target specimens were Dyneema® SK76 yarns (1760 dtex), twisted to 40 turns/m, and initially tensioned to stresses ranging from 29 to 2200 MPa. Yarns were impacted, transversely, by two types of cylindrical steel projectiles at velocities ranging from 150 to 555 m/s: (i) a reverse-fired, fragment simulating projectile (FSP) where the flat rear face impacted the yarn rather than the beveled nose; and (ii) a ‘saddle-nosed projectile’ having a specially contoured nose imparting circular curvature in the region of impact, but opposite curvature transversely to prevent yarn slippage off the nose. Experimental data consisted of sequential photographic images of the progress of the triangular transverse wave, as well as tensile wave speed measured using spaced, piezo-electric sensors. Yarn Young’s modulus, calculated from the tensile wave-speed, varied from 133 GPa at minimal initial tension to 208 GPa at the highest initial tensions. However, varying projectile impact velocity, and thus, the strain jump on impact, had negligible effect on the modulus. Contrary to predictions from the classical Cole-Smith model for 1D yarn impact, the critical velocity for yarn failure differed significantly for the two projectile types, being 18% lower for the flat-faced, reversed FSP projectile compared to the saddle-nosed projectile, which converts to an apparent 25% difference in yarn strength. To explain this difference, a wave-propagation model was developed that incorporates tension wave collision under blunt impact by a flat-faced projectile, in contrast to outward wave propagation in the classical model. Agreement between experiment and model predictions was outstanding across a wide range of initial yarn tensions. However, plots of calculated failure stress versus yarn pre-tension stress resulted in apparent yarn strengths much lower than 3.4 GPa from quasi-static tension tests, although a plot of critical velocity versus initial tension did project to 3.4 GPa at zero velocity. This strength reduction (occurring also in aramid fibers) suggested that transverse fiber distortion and yarn compaction from a compressive shock wave under the projectile results in fiber-on-fiber interference in the emerging transverse wave front, causing a gradient in fiber tensile strains with depth, and strain concentration in fibers nearest the projectile face. A model was developed to illustrate the phenomenon.

Over the past several years, Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) has developed and applied DIC to measure back-face deflection and strain response on hundreds of flat panel test articles subjected to ballistic impacts from both small arms fire and bird-strike. The data collected has been used to develop new composite panel layups and validate material models to a level that no previous measurement technique was able to achieve. Getting consistent, high-quality DIC data during a ballistic impact test, however, presents some unique challenges not present in lower-rate testing methods. Proper pattern application techniques to avoid spalling during impact and protection of the expensive stereo high-speed camera pair must be considered and are addressed here. For small arms tests, the required image exposure time to avoid motion blur is on the order of 1 μs, requiring appropriate illumination methods. Bird strike presents a separate set of challenges including an outdoor environment, larger measurement area, and biohazard. The methods used to address these will also be presented. Materials tested include metals, transparent plastics, and composites including carbon, aramid, and polyethylene. Target sizes range from 6 × 6 to 36 × 36 in. and data rates from 10,000 to 50,000 Hz. Comparison of the DIC data with traditional measurement techniques such as strain gauges and calipers was also made. Agreement proved to be good, prompting the most recent series of tests to be run with DIC as the exclusive data collection method.

As illustrated in literature, ballistics is a branch of theoretical mechanics, which studies the construction and working principles of firearms and ammunition, their effects, as well as the motions of projectiles and bullets 1 . Criminalistics identification, as part of judiciary identification represents an activity aimed at finding common traits of different objects, objectives, phenomena and beings, but more importantly, traits that differentiate each of them from similar ones 2-4 . In judicial ballistics, in the case of rifled firearms it is relatively simple for experts to identify the used weapon from traces left on the projectile, as the rifling of the barrel leaves imprints on the bullet, which remain approximately identical even after the respective weapon is fired 100 times with the same barrel. However, in the case of smoothbore firearms, their identification becomes much more complicated. As the firing cap suffers alterations from being hit by the firing pin, determination of the force generated during impact creates the premises for determining the type of firearm used to shoot the respective cartridge. The present paper proposes a simple impact model that can be used to evaluate the force generated by the firing pin during its impact with the firing cap. The present research clearly showed that each rifle, by the combination of the three investigated parameters (impact force maximum value, its variation diagram, and impact time) leave a unique trace. Application of such a method in ballistics can create the perspectives for formulating clear conclusions that eliminate possible judicial errors in this field.

This paper presents an initial design assessment of a series of novel, cost-effective, and hybrid composite materials for applications involving high velocity impacts. The proposed hybrid panels were designed in order to investigate various physical phenomenon occurring during high velocity impact on compliant laminates from a previous study on Dyneema® and Spectra®. In the first, screening phase of the study twenty different hybrid composite laminates were impacted with 20 mm Fragment Simulating Projectiles at 1 km/s striking velocity. The best performing concepts were put forward to phase II with other hybrid concepts involving shear thickening fluids, commonly used in low velocity impacts. The results indicated that it is possible to design hybrid laminates of similar ballistic performance as the reference Dyneema® laminate, but with lower material costs. The optimal hybrid concept involves a fibre reinforced Polypropylene front and a Dyneema® backing.

Although advanced lightweight composite based armors are available, high hardness steels in military vehicles are often used to provide ballistic protection at a relatively low cost and is an interesting material due to its widespread usage in vehicle structure. In this study, ballistic limit of 500 HB armor steel was determined against 7.62 mm 54R B32 API hardened steel core ammunition. Lagrange and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations were carried out using 3D model of bullet and high hardness armor target. Perforation tests on 9 and 20 mm thickness armor were performed to validate simulation methodology. Also material tests were performed for armor steel and ammunition hardened steel core to develop Johnson–Cook constitutive relations for both strength and failure models. Finally, results from 3D numerical simulations with detailed models of bullet and target were compared with experiments. The study indicates that the ballistic limit can be quantitatively well predicted independent of chosen simulation methodology, but qualitatively some differences are seen during perforation and fragmentation. As shown in results, good agreement between Ls-Dyna simulations and experimental data was achieved by Lagrange formulation with the full bullet model.

The aim of this study was to understand the stick–slip (Sk-Sp) properties of para-aramid woven fabrics. For this reason, pullout test was conducted on para-aramid Twaron CT® 716 (CT716) and Twaron CT® 716 (CT714) woven fabrics. The Sk-Sp region and accumulative retraction force region were defined based on the single- or multiple-yarn pullout force–displacement curve. It was found that Sk-Sp force and accumulative retraction force depend on the fabric density and the number of pulled ends in the fabric. Sk-Sp force in the multiple-yarn pullout test was higher than that of the single-yarn pullout test. Sk-Sp force in single- and multiple-yarn pullout tests in the dense CT716 fabric was higher than that of the loose CT714 fabric. In addition, long fabric samples showed high Sk-Sp force compared to that of the short fabric samples. On the other hand, the amount of Sk-Sp force was related to the number of interlacement points in the fabric, whereas the amount of accumulative retraction force was related to fabric structural response.

To study the influence of barrel’s deformation and vehicle velocity to certain vehicular Gatling gun, a virtual simulation with rigid-flexible coupling was established by using ADAMS/Flex module based on rigid multi-body dynamics and flexible body dynamics theories. Considering the interaction of the tires and road surface, vehicle and machine gun, the dynamic analysis and calculation of exterior ballistics were completed in various vehicle velocity condition, the muzzle response characteristics and impact position were obtained. The Model is testified rational, accuracy and effective by comparing simulating results with the experimental data of the velocity and displacement of barrel, which has laid the foundation for further simulation and structural optimization.

In firearm examiners’ and forensic specialists’ casework as well as in air gun proof testing, reliable measurement of the weapon’s muzzle velocity is indispensable. While there are standardized and generally accepted procedures for testing the performance of air guns, the method of seating the diabolo pellets deeper into the breech of break barrel spring-piston air guns has not found its way into standardized test procedures. The influence of pellet seating on the external ballistic parameters was investigated using ten different break barrel spring-piston air guns. Test shots were performed with the diabolo pellets seated 2 mm deeper into the breech using a pellet seater. The results were then compared to reference shots with conventionally loaded diabolo pellets. Projectile velocity was measured with a high-precision redundant ballistic speed measurement system. In eight out of ten weapons, the muzzle energy increased significantly when the pellet seater was used. The average increase in kinetic energy was 31 % (range 9–96 %). To conclude, seating the pellet even slightly deeper into the breech of spring-piston air guns might significantly alter the muzzle energy. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that this effect is taken into account when accurate and reliable measurements of air gun muzzle velocity are necessary.

The use of cartridge projectiles in the ballistic evaluation of armor can result in measurement uncertainty if there is variability in their construction. This report details a method that was developed to batch analyze and compare the volumes of (210) BS41 surrogate projectiles that were scanned using X-ray computed tomography. The method described automatically segments and obtains the axial-symmetric radii profiles of components contained within the projectile (outer jacket, inner jacket, core), which can then be used to quantify and compare projectiles to one another numerically using a root-mean-square-error calculation. Projectiles are then grouped together according to the similarity of their components. Also discussed is graphical-cluster analysis of the projectiles, which aids in understanding the source of their variability as well as an approach to use this methods numerical component values to account for projectile variability in the ballistic evaluation of armor.

Fibre-reinforced polymer composites (FRPs) are extensively used in protective elements and structures exposed to a wide range of impact loading. The range of application is comprehensive, with impact velocities (and, consequently, impact energies) ranging from low to high levels. As widely reported, damage mechanisms in FRPs are observed to change significantly with the nature of impact, and hence need better understanding and assessment. In this chapter, impact events are studied in some detail using a numerical approach in analysis of various experimental data. Finite-element models of FRPs, once accurately developed and validated, allow elucidation of various deformation and damage mechanisms underpinning composite failure across impact-velocity envelopes. In this regard, results are discussed that were obtained from the authors' work on air blast on FRPs and ballistic impact on woven composites using a numerically accurate and computationally efficient modelling framework.

Helicopter tail drive shafts (TDS) are safe-life items with strict limits on allowable damage. Typically, shafts with scratches as small as several thousandths of an inch may require replacement. Despite these severe tolerances on damage, TDSs are designed with relatively large ballistic damage tolerance. In battle damage scenarios, repair for damage to TDS caused by small arms fire is required to enable the helicopter to continue its mission or return safely to base. This paper describes a novel repair technique using composite bonded patches to restore the strength of damaged TDSs. Analytical approaches are provided for the design of the repair. An experimental testing program was conducted to validate the theoretical results. It has been demonstrated in this study that the proposed composite bonded repair possessed sufficient static and fatigue strength to restore the structural integrity of the TDS even with minimal surface treatment.

Auto-targeting fire sprinkler system is an intelligent fire extinguishing equipment that used in interior large space. An auto-targeting fire sprinkler system was designed; the compositions and working principle were also expounded in detail. The water trajectory equation was deduced and simulated by Matlab software according to the principle of particle kinematics, ballistics, and fluid mechanics. The relationship among working pressure, pitch angle, installation height and jet range, flow landing speed was analyzed. The results show that the fire sprinkler system can satisfy the design requirements, and the water trajectory equation basically concides with the actual situation, which can provide some theoretical references for the fire precision location.

This report relates to the discovery and development by the authors of armor designs using certain elastomers applied as coatings to the front side of rigid substrates, to increase the ballistic and blast performance of armor. This has led to much activity intended to optimize and exploit the technology for various applications, both military and civilian. Since armor improvements of even a few percent are substantial, quantifying the performance of armor materials requires high accuracy. Herein we describe test methods and analyses useful in achieving measurements of sufficient quality. Since the optimal design of any armor, conventional or advanced, depends on the threat (i.e., the nature of the projectile and its mass and energy; single- versus multiple-hit defeat), we describe how performance attributes can be quantified and valid comparisons made between different armor designs.

We are interested in temporally and spatially resolving the rear surface velocity of a plate under ballistic impact as a function of materials, impact velocity, and the ratio of plate thickness to impactor diameter. There are a variety of applications for which these details are useful: material model validation, ballistic limit (V50) characterization, and mechanics of layered systems, for example. Rapacki1 used free-surface bulging to quantify the remaining armor value of rolled homogeneous armor (RHA). Most previous work however has been related to developing or advancing analytic penetration models. The Walker-Anderson2 model, which describes long-rod penetrators into semi-infinite targets, is of particular note. However, it is only applicable until the targets rear surface affects the penetration process. Ravid et al.3 extended the model by accounting for target bulging and failure. Separately, Walker4 derived a velocity field for the back surface bulge to augment their original model. Chocron et al.5 also extended the Walker-Anderson model to account for different failure criteria in part to accurately capture the ballistic limit for several targets.

Whipple shields were first proposed as a means of protecting spacecraft from the impact of micrometeoroids in 1947 [1] and are currently in use as micrometeoroid and orbital debris shields on modern spacecraft. In the intervening years, the function of the thin bumper used to shatter or melt threatening particles has been augmented and enhanced by the use of various types and configurations of intermediate layers of various materials. All shield designs serve to minimize the threat of a spall failure or perforation of the main wall of the spacecraft as a result of the impact of the fragments. With increasing use of Whipple shields, various ballistic limit equations (BLEs) for guiding the design and estimating the performance of shield systems have been developed. Perhaps the best known and most used are the "new" modified Cour-Palais (Christiansen) equations [2]. These equations address the three phases of impact: (1) ballistic ( 7 km/s), where the projectile melts or vaporizes at impact. The performance of Whipple shields and the adequacy of the BLEs have been examined for the first two phases using the results of impact tests obtained from two-stage, light-gas gun test firings. Shield performance and the adequacy of the BLEs has not been evaluated in the melt/vaporization phase until now because of the limitations of launchers used to accelerate projectiles with controlled properties to velocities above 7.5 km/s. A three-stage, light-gas gun, developed at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) [3], is capable of launching small, aluminum spheres to velocities above 9 km/s. This launcher was used to evaluate the ballistic performance of two Whipple shield systems, various thermal protection system materials, and other spacecraft-related materials to the impact of 1.6-mm- to 2.6-mm-diameter, 2017-T4 aluminum spheres at impact velocities ranging from 8.91 km/s to 9.28 km/s. Test results, details of the shield systems, and nominal ballistic limits for the two Whipple shields are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The impact of three different projectiles (0.357 Magnum, 9-mm FMJ and 0.30 cal FSP) onto Kevlar® was modeled using a commercial finite-element program. The focus of the research was on simulating full-scale body armor targets, which were modeled at the yarn level, by reducing to a minimum the number of solid elements per yarn. A thorough validation of the impact physics was performed at the yarn level, single-layer level, and a full body armor system. A verification was performed by checking the numerical model against analytical predictions for yarn impact. For one-layer and multiple-layer targets validation consisted on matching experimental data of pyramid formation recorded by an ultra-high-speed camera. The full-scale targets were also instrumented with nickel–chromium wires that stretch with the yarn during the penetration event. The wires provided a second validation data set since the numerical model can reproduce the signal recorded by the wires. The third and final validation of the model is provided by a comparison of the ballistic limit predicted by the model and data obtained in tests. This is a check of the failure model used in the numerical simulations. This paper shows that the main features of the impact physics are well reproduced by the finite-element model. Prediction of ballistic limits for the 9-mm FMJ and FSP projectiles were within the scatter of the tests, while for the 0.357 projectile the difference was only 15%.

The design of a canard-controlled mortar projectile using a bank-to-turn concept is presented. A unique feature of this smart mortar configuration is that it is equipped with a set of two reciprocating fixed-angle maneuver canards and a set of two reciprocating fixed-angle roll canards. An active control system is designed such that the roll canards set the body in the proper maneuver plane and the maneuver canards extend to perform trajectory corrections. Example results and Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate control system effectiveness in reducing dispersion error due to launch perturbations and winds. Comparison studies with a rolling airframe equipped with reciprocating maneuver canards show that the bank-to-turn approach offers more control authority, eliminates problematic angle-of-attack oscillations, and requires lower-bandwidth actuators.

Geometrically similar scaling is applied to various blast loading experiments and the results are reported. The geometry of the experiment was scaled by a single scale factor. The imparted impulse (captured by the horizontal motion of a pendulum), mid-point deflections of thin plates and an estimate of the strain rates are compared relative to the observed and geometrical scale factors. The analysis confirms the similarity of the imparted impulse obtained and indicates the importance of material properties such as yield strength and strain rate sensitivity on the similarity of the mid-point deflections.

Three-dimensional FE model is presented for perforation under normal and oblique impact of sharp nosed projectiles on single and layered ductile targets. Numerical simulations have been carried out to study the behavior of Weldox 460 E steel and 1100-H12 aluminum targets impacted by conical and ogive nosed steel projectiles respectively. Weldox 460 E steel targets of 12 mm thickness in single and double layered combination (2 × 6 mm) and 1100-H12 aluminum targets of 1 mm thickness in single and double layered combination (2 × 0.5 mm) impacted at 0°, 15° and 30° obliquity were considered for simulations. The results of monolithic and layered targets were compared for each angle of impact. Monolithic targets were found to have higher ballistic resistance than that of the layered in-contact targets of equivalent thickness. Failure of both the targets occurred through ductile hole enlargement. However, ogive nosed projectile failed 1 mm thick aluminum target through petal formation and conical nosed projectile failed 12 mm thick steel target through a circular or elliptical hole enclosed by a bulge at rear surface. The explicit algorithm of ABAQUS finite element code was used to carry out the numerical simulations. Various parameters which play critical role in numerical simulation such as element size and its aspect ratio have been studied.

Problem statement: Future generations of intelligent munitions will use Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) for guidance, fuzing logic and assessment of the battlefield environment. The temperatures fund in a gun system, however, are sufficient to damage some materials used in the fabrication of MEMS. The motivation of this study is to model the dynamic temperature distribution in a typical small-caliber projectile. Approach: An axisymmetric finite-element model of a projectile is developed to simulate temperatures through internal ballistics (the projectile is in the gun barrel) and external ballistics (the projectile travels in a free trajectory towards the target). Accuracy of the simulation is confirmed through comparison to analytical models and to payloads attached to experimental projectiles. In the simulation, the exact values for some boundary conditions are unknown and/or unknowable. A sensitivity analysis determines the effect of these uncertain parameters. Results: The simulation shows that friction at the projectile-gun barrel interface is primarily responsible for elevated temperatures in a gun system. Other factors have much smaller effects. The short duration of the internal ballistics prevents the frictional heat from diffusing into the bulk of the projectile. As a result, the projectile has a shallow, high-temperature zone at its bearing surface as it leaves the gun barrel. During external ballistics, this heat will diffuse through the projectile, but most of the projectile experiences temperatures of 56°C or lower. Simulation shows that the polymer package around a MEMS device will further attenuate heat flow, limiting temperatures in the device to less than 30°C. Conclusion: The finite element model demonstrates that a MEMS device may be engineered to survive temperatures expected in the ballistic environment.

This paper presents ballistic impact damages of 3-D orthogonal woven composite in finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental. A unit-cell model of the 3-D woven composite was developed to define the material behavior and failure evolution. A user-defined subroutine VUAMT was compiled and connected with commercial available FEA code ABAQUS/Explicit to calculate the ballistic penetration. Ballistic impact tests were conducted to investigate impact damage of 3-D kevlar/glass hybrid woven composite. Residual velocities of conically-cylindrical steel projectiles (Type 56 in China Military Standard) and impact damage of the composite targets after ballistic perforation were compared both in theoretical and experimental. The reasonable agreements between FEA results and experimental results prove the validity of the unit-cell model in ballistic limit prediction of the 3-D woven composite. We believe such an effort could be extended to bulletproof armor design with the 3-D woven composite.

Uncontained aircraft engine failure can cause catastrophic damaging effects to aircraft systems if not addressed in the aircraft design. Mitigating the damaging effects of uncontained engine failure and improving the numerical modeling capability of these uncontained engine events are crucial. In this paper, high strain rate material behavior of one of the most extensively used materials in the aircraft industry is simulated and the results are compared against ballistic impact tests. Ballistic limits are evaluated by utilizing explicit finite-element (FE) simulations based on the corresponding ballistic impact experiments performed at different material thicknesses. LS-DYNA is used as a nonlinear explicit dynamics FE code for the simulations. A Johnson–Cook material model with different sets of parameters is employed as a thermo-viscoplastic material model coupled with a nonlinear equation of state and an accumulated damage evaluation algorithm for the numerical simulations. A meso-scale ballistic material model for a prototypical plain-woven single-ply flexible armor is developed and implemented in a material user subroutine for the use in commercial explicit finite element programs. The main intent of the model is to attain computational efficiency when calculating the mechanical response of the multi-ply fabric-based flexible-armor material during its impact with various projectiles without significantly sacrificing the key physical aspects of the fabric microstructure, architecture, and behavior. To validate the new model, a comparative finite element method analysis is carried out in which: (a) the plain-woven single-ply fabric is modeled using conventional shell elements and weaving is done in an explicit manner by snaking the yarns through the fabric and (b) the fabric is treated as a planar continuum surface composed of conventional shell elements to which the new meso-scale unit-cell based material model is assigned. The results obtained show that the material model provides a reasonably good description for the fabric deformation and fracture behavior under different combinations of fixed and free boundary conditions. Finally, the model is used in an investigation of the ability of a multi-ply soft-body armor vest to protect the wearer from impact by a 9-mm round nose projectile. The effects of inter-ply friction, projectile/yarn friction, and the far-field boundary conditions are revealed and the results explained using simple wave mechanics principles, high-deformation rate material behavior, and the role of various energy-absorbing mechanisms in the fabric-based armor systems.

In the first part of the paper [Naik D, Sankaran S, Mobasher B, Rajan SD, Pereira M. Development of reliable modeling methodologies for fan blade-out containment analysis. Part I: experimental studies. Int J Impact Eng, in press], details of the experiments to characterize the behavior of dry fabrics including Kevlar®49, and ballistic tests involving the fabric were presented. In this second part of the paper, we discuss the development and verification of a constitutive model for dry fabrics for use in an explicit finite element program. The developed constitutive model is implemented as a user-defined subroutine in LS-DYNA, a commercial finite element program. It is then used to simulate a suite of ballistic tests [Naik D, Sankaran S, Mobasher B, Rajan SD, Pereira M. Development of reliable modeling methodologies for fan blade-out containment analysis. Part I: experimental studies. Int J Impact Eng, in press] that replicate conditions seen in an engine fan blade out (FBO) event. A qualitative and quantitative comparison of the deformation shape of the fabric containment system and a quantitative comparison of the absorbed energy are carried out. Results indicate that the developed constitutive model provides a very encouraging start in modeling these high-speed events and could provide as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) desires, an attractive complement to full-scale engine FBO tests.

Various open-literature experimental findings pertaining to the ballistic behavior of glass are used to construct a simple, physically based, high strain-rate, high-pressure, large-strain constitutive model for this material. The basic components of the model are constructed in such a way that the model is suitable for direct incorporation into standard commercial transient non-linear dynamics finite-element based software packages like ANSYS/Autodyn [ANSYS/Autodyn version 11.0, User documentation, Century Dynamics Inc. a subsidiary of ANSYS Inc.; 2007.] or ABAQUS/Explicit [ABAQUS version 6.7, User documentation, Dessault systems, 2007.]. To validate the material model, a set of finite element analyses of the Edge-on-Impact (EOI) tests is carried out and the results compared with their experimental counterparts obtained in the recent work of Strassburger et al. [Strassburger E, Patel P, McCauley JW, Kovalchick C, Ramesh KT, Templeton DW. High-speed transmission shadowgraphic and dynamic photoelasticity study of stress wave and impact damage propagation in transparent materials and laminates using the edge-on impact method. In: Proceedings of the twenty-third international symposium on ballistics. Spain: April 2007, and Strassburger E, Patel P, McCauley W, Templeton DW. Visualization of wave propagation and impact damage in a polycrystalline transparent ceramic-AlON. In: Proceedings of the twenty-second international symposium on ballistics. Vancouver, Canada: November 2005.]. Overall, a good agreement is found between the computational and the experimental results pertaining to: (a) the front-shapes and propagation velocities of the longitudinal and transverse waves generated in the target during impact; (b) the front-shapes and propagation velocities of the “coherent-damage” zone (a zone surrounding the projectile/target contact surface which consists of numerous micron- and sub-micron-size cracks); and (c) the formation of “crack centers”, i.e. isolated cracks nucleated ahead of the advancing coherent-damage zone front. Relatively minor discrepancies between the computational and the experimental results are attributed to the effects of damage-promoting target-fixturing induced stresses and cutting/grinding-induced flaws located along the narrow faces of the target and the surrounding regions.

Since ballistic and blast survivability and off-road handling and stability of military vehicles, such as the high-mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV), are two critical vehicle performance aspects, they both (including the delicate balance between them) have to be considered when a new vehicle is being designed or an existing vehicle retrofitted (e.g. up-armoured). Finite-element-based transient non-linear dynamics and multi-body longitudinal dynamics computational analyses were employed, relatively, in the present work to address the following two specific aspects of the performance of an HMMWV: first, the ability of the vehicle to survive detonation of a landmine shallow buried into sand underneath the right wheel of the vehicle and, second, the ability of the vehicle to withstand a simple straight-line brake manoeuvre during off-road travel without compromising its stability and safety of its occupants. Within the first analysis, the kinematic and structural responses (including large-scale rotation and deformation, buckling, plastic yielding, failure initiation, fracture, and fragmentation) of the HMMWV to the detonation of a landmine were analysed computationally using the general-purpose transient non-linear dynamics analysis software ABAQUS/Explicit. The second analysis was carried out using Simpack, a general-purpose multi-body dynamics program, and the main purpose of this analysis was to address the vehicle stability during the off-road travel. The same sand model was used in both types of analysis. Finally, the computational results obtained are compared with general field-test observations and data in order to judge the physical soundness and fidelity of the present approach.
