1. Magazine Freelancing as a Business Enterprise: A Market Systems Approach.

Abstract

Conflicting information has made it necessary to examine the key factors involved in submitting magazine nonfiction for publication in order to provide better insight into the mechanics of magazine acceptance. A preliminary study tested the applicability of the market systems approach from the perspective of the magazine editor. Subjects, 28 editors of major United States magazines, were interviewed and their remarks were coded by content analysis. Thirty trade books on freelance writing were also examined. Findings suggest that (1) existing information on magazine freelancing is unreliable; (2) magazine freelancing is best viewed as a business enterprise; and (3) an appropriate and complete approach to investigations of freelancing is one derived from business research, the market systems approach. Abstract

Scholarly debate about world literature often relegates non-fiction as secondary to fiction. This article argues that non-fiction is as important as fiction, and uses the Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award as a case study. Although the FT award focuses on business, it has a wider cultural impact influencing academia, global media, and literature. After seventeen years, the award's consistent quality of longlisted books has created a canon that has genuine literary value. My analysis of the award demonstrates that the finalists and winners have been concentrated in terms of author's country of work, author's profession, and primary subject. This concentration can be partly explained by the dominance of the US in the publishing of business books as well as by the mechanics of the award's selection process. The FT award also prompts a discussion about the merits of a literary award that embraces both fiction and non-fiction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article focuses on the book "Accounting, Information Technology and Business Solutions," by Gerard McHugh. In evaluating this well produced text the author was reminded of the absence of specific courses in Accounting Information systems (AIS) outside of the US. Universities and the professional bodies in the English speaking world have grappled for a number of years with the question of Information Technology and its role in accounting education. There have been a number of discussion documents from the professional bodies and these have led to a considerable increase in the IT/IS content of the professional syllabi. Some institutes such as CIMA have taken a decision to include a full paper on the area of Information Management in their final examinations. Other bodies have included significant amounts of Business Information Systems at earlier stages of the syllabi. The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland has gone considerably further than most bodies and has an obligatory hands-on competency test in IT for all finalists.
