Abstract

Many service providers (e.g. mobile network operators) want to turn their business into fully digitalised regimes and offer personalised services. To do so they need access to the consumers' personal data and must explicitly ask consumers for consent. In this cross-national study, including representative samples from seven countries covering Scandinavia, Central-Eastern Europe and South-Eastern Asia, we investigate the effect of trust vs. privacy concerns and the moderating impact of culture when consents are requested. The study shows that trust in service provider has stronger impact on consent giving than privacy concerns, and indicates that 'digital native' more than 'digital immigrant' providers should focus on trust building activities when they enter countries with an individualistic culture. Abstract

This article examines an example of private transnational governance in the first decades after the Second World War: the Council of European Industrial Federations (CEIF), created in 1949 by the peak-level trade associations in western Europe. Based on this case, the article takes issue with two predominant views in the current literature: a view that sees the European integration process, at least in its early stages, as driven largely by nation-states and political agendas; and another view, widespread among business and economic historians, that contacts between business associations at that time served the main purpose of re-establishing international cartels. The CEIF actually performed a wide variety of functions: it represented organized business at international events and in organizations, acted as a multilateral arena for the exchange of information and for building trust among the businesspeople of various European countries, and, from 1958 onwards, helped bridge the divide between those inside and those outside the Common Market. On occasions, for example, in the case of export incentives, it even managed to forge a consensus for policy action when national governments were unable to agree. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose — Seeks to examine three empirical studies carried out in Canada, the UK and Europe with comparisons drawn on their approach and findings. Design/methodology/approach — The studies were compared using a framework, developed by the authors, along four central elements and two influencing drivers. Findings — Little measurement consistency or output value was evident. The current focus on isolated studies, carried out at a macro level, is discouraged. Practical implications — Future studies need greater rigour, and consequently might be of more value to academics and practitioners. This article presents an account of the trade situation in Japan. This account is condensed from an article reprinted in the January 15, 1920 issue of the "Japanese Chronicle." When the armistice was concluded toward the end of year before last, a commercial depression set in for fear that Japanese industries would be unfavorably affected by the growth of the activities, after the World War I, in Europe and the cessation of demands for war supplies there. But owing to the complication of international politics and the frequent recurrence of labor troubles in Europe since then, industries were not restored so rapidly as had been expected.
