Swedish Medical Center, one of the biggest hospitals in Washington's Seattle area, has cut back four vice presidents and 22 directors and is planning to lay off additional 175 staff. Unemployment insurance claims from hospital staff in Washington have risen from 2,400 in 2007 to 2,600 in 2008, and more hospitals are expected to cut staff.
