Abstract

This article examines export decision makers' perceptions about export obstacles for firms at various stages of export development. Data was collected from small businesses using a mail survey. Factor analysis of questionnaire items provides five barrier factors that are consistent with prior research. The results support the contention that marginal exporters perceive more barriers than do exporters, but no difference was found between the barrier perceptions of marginal exporters and nonexporters.
