Poland's economic restructuring and reform program has resulted in substantial unemployment among its female labor force. Under the communist government, women accounted for a significant portion of the total labor force, comprising 47% of the labor force as of 1990. Unemployment rates among women started rising in 1991, and by 1993, 52% of all unemployed were women. In 1993, women's labor participation rate fell to 45%. The causes of women's unemployment were attributed to gender bias, family or personal reasons and the substantial increases in child care costs.
