The soft drink indsutry grew by 7% during the 4th qtr of 1998 and by 6% or better for the year in North America, but shipments were flat for the foreign market due to uncertain economic conditions. Competition growth for the US fountain business, worldwide industry consolidation, and the developement of new flavors were other trends in 1998. Earnings shortfalls have made these stocks less timely in 1999, but prospects for growth through the years 2001-2003 are good.

The soft drink industry registered impressive sales gains internationally and in the US in summer 1994. Coca-Cola, for example, boosted international case volume 17%. Over the long term, these gains are not sustainable, but should still average 7% to 10% annually abroad and 2% to 4% in the US. The biggest gains in 1994 occurred in the non-cola segment. The group as a whole has an attractive 3- to 5-year investment potential.

The soft drink industry is expected to experience strong growth prospects, especially in international markets. Domestic product volume increased in the 2nd qtr of 1994, driven in part by an improving US economy. Canadian company Cott produces over 50 private-label soft drinks for US stores, a category which might prove profitable.

The soft drink industry is doing better in 1993, after a slump during 1990-1992. Leading companies Coca-Cola and PepsiCo respectively reported 6% and 5% bottler case sales increases, but their growth has only matched the industry average. The international market is expected to grow 7% to 10% annually, and PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are leading the way. In addition, 'new age' and other new drink products are growing in market share, along with private-label products. The long-term outlook is excellent for industry stocks, and Cott and Dr. Pepper have performed better than most.
