The article explores the appropriation by the White House, of filmic images of the heroic male in films like "Top Gun," in stage-managed events such as United States President George W. Bush's "homecoming" from Iraq in a fighter jet, with Bush kitted out in full combat gear. The article suggests that war reporting comprises an ongoing fiction, with fragments of images from then and now repackaged to resonate with a contemporary sentiment and sympathy. The author considers the now infamous pictures of torture and abuse at Abu Ghraib prison as part of the commodification of the war-as-entertainment trope.
