Objective: Analyze the relationships between family context and involvement in school bullying., Methods: The following databases were searched: Web of Science, PsycoInfo, Pub-Med, Lilacs and SciELO virtual library, using the terms bullying, family and parents. A total of 61 papers met the eligibility criteria. The corpus was analyzed through the Bioecological Development Framework., Results: The experiences of students experiencing situations of bullying are multifaceted and are related to the family context. Elements from the microsystem, such as violence in the family, parental practices, environment and type of family arrangements, were the elements more frequently explored and related to bullying, though the relationships of parents with the children's friends, the parents' education and socioeconomic conditions, along with the exo, meso and macro systems were also related to bullying., Conclusion: The review contributes to the literature by broadening the approach to this phenomenon that affects the health and development of children and adolescents.

This study's objective was to verify whether improved social and emotional skills would reduce victimization among Brazilian 6th grade student victims of bullying. The targets of this intervention were victimized students; a total of 78 victims participated. A cognitive-behavioral intervention based on social and emotional skills was held in eight weekly sessions. The sessions focused on civility, the ability to make friends, self-control, emotional expressiveness, empathy, assertiveness, and interpersonal problem-solving capacity. Data were analyzed through Poisson regression models with random effects. Pre- and post-analyses reveal that intervention and comparison groups presented significant reduced victimization by bullying. No significant improvement was found in regard to difficulties in practicing social skills. Victimization reduction cannot be attributed to the program. This study contributes to the incipient literature addressing anti-bullying interventions conducted in developing countries and highlights the need for approaches that do not exclusively focus on the students' individual aspects., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

This study aims to investigate the associations between bullying and moral disengagement in a Brazilian sample, using a mixed method design. Two-thousand three hundred and thirty-four adolescents (11–19 years; 42.9% girls) answered self-report measures on bullying and moral disengagement in response to bullying situations. Fifty-five participants were randomly selected and interviewed on their experiences on bullying at school. Results allowed to identify specific mechanisms of moral disengagement associated with bullying behavior among Brazilian adolescents. Qualitative analysis highlighted how moral disengagement mechanisms were spontaneously used by the adolescents to explain both the bullying and the bystander behaviors. Findings support the relevance of moral disengagement mechanisms in explaining bullying behaviors. The value of addressing these mechanisms when designing anti-bullying interventions is discussed. Bullying is a frequent public health problem in developing countries. This is the first mixed study that investigates the interaction between the quality of family interactions and bullying among Brazilian students. 2,354 adolescents participated in the study. Two scales and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Statistical analyses and content analysis using Atlas.TI software were developed. The Bioecological Theory of Development was adopted as the theoreticalmethodological framework. The students not involved in bullying situations presented better family interactions. Negative communication, negative marital interaction, and corporal punishment emerged as critical factors for the involvement in bullying situations. Rules, parental supervision and positive family aspects are protective factors. The family is responsible for the process of moral development and providing essential support to victims. The debate should be broadened in the health field in order to organize anti-bullying interventions focusing on a family approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Bullying at school has stood out, generating several negative repercussions on the health of adolescents. Objective: To evaluate the effects of an intervention based on the Theatre of the Oppressed in the reduction of bullying at school 6 months after its completion. Methodology: A quasi-experimental study, conducted between 2016 and 2017, with high school students from two schools of the state capital of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Among the 231 participants, 133 composed the intervention group, and 98 the comparison group. Before and after the intervention, the groups were assessed by the Peer Aggression and Victimization Scale (EVAP). The t-test and chi-squared test were used for the data analysis, and measurements were not compared. Results: The intervention group showed a significant reduction in the direct victimization and aggression, 6 months after the end of the intervention. However, the comparison group showed a significant increase in all forms of bullying victimization and aggression. Conclusion: The Theatre of the Oppressed contributed to the reduction of bullying among adolescents and can be incorporated into the actions of health promotion in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explored associations between bullying and sociodemographic, mental health and risk behavior variables in school age children. This cross-sectional survey analyzed data from the National School Health Survey (PeNSE 2015). A multiple logistic regression analysis checked for factors associated with bullying. Nineteen point eight percent (95%CI 10.5 - 20.0) of the students claimed they practiced bullying. The practice of bullying was more common among students enrolled in private schools, those living with their parents, and those whose mothers have more years of schooling and are gainfully employed (28.1% CI 27.3-28.8). In terms of mental health characteristics, bullying was more common among those feeling alone, suffering from insomnia and with no friends. Looking at family characteristics, those reporting they are physically punished by family members (33.09% CI 33.1- 34.6) and miss school without telling their family (28.4% 95% CI 27.9-29.0) are more likely to practice bullying. Bullying was more frequent among those reporting tobacco, alcohol and drug use, and among students claiming to have had sexual relations. The data shows that bullying is significant and interferes in school children's health and the teaching-learning process. This paper presents a systematic literature review addressing rigorously planned and assessed interventions intended to reduce school bullying. The search for papers was performed in four databases (Lilacs, Psycinfo, Scielo and Web of Science) and guided by the question: What are the interventions used to reduce bullying in schools? Only case-control studies specifically focusing on school bullying without a time frame were included. The methodological quality of investigations was assessed using the SIGN checklist. A total of 18 papers composed the corpus of analysis and all were considered to have high methodological quality. The interventions conducted in the revised studies were divided into four categories: multi-component or whole-school, social skills training, curricular, and computerized. The review synthesizes knowledge that can be used to contemplate practices and intervention programs in the education and health fields with a multidisciplinary nature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study consists of a systematic review of longitudinal studies investigating the association between school bullying and offensive behavior during adolescence and criminal behavior in adulthood. A bibliographic search was conducted in five international databases (ERIC, LILACS, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science) and a national electronic library (Scielo). A total of 13 studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Most studies report a statistically significant relationship between bullying and illegal actions committed by adolescents and adults. In some of the analyzed studies a significant relationship remained after controlling for other risk factors during childhood, indicating that bullying is an independent risk factor and reinforcing the need to address and prevent school bullying at an early stage. This qualitative study's aim was to identify the knowledge of 6th grade teachers concerning bullying and interventions they developed. A total of ten teachers were included and data were collected using structured questionnaires. The analyses followed the assumptions of thematic content analysis. The results revealed that teachers had a poor understanding of the problem, which affected their ability to identify and intervene in bullying situations faced by students. It appears that bullying is an important aspect to be discussed with teachers considering their proximity to the problem and the essential role they can play helping students to overcome it. Executive functions are cognitive skills required to perform complex, adaptive, and socially acceptable behaviors. The existence of deficits in these functions may imply behavioral problems and violence. Thus, the objective of this integrative review of the literature was to identify relationships between executive functions and school bullying. The keywords "executive functions" and "bullying" were cross-referenced in the databases: LILACS, PsycINFO, ScieELO, Scopus and Web of Science. The methodological quality of the investigations was evaluated through the Checklist for Analytical Cross Sectional Studies. Among the 22 identified studies, seven met the inclusion criteria and were selected. All studies analyzed identified associations between practicing or suffering bullying with deficits in executive functions.
